Ive recently bought the Pestilens box. Im about to build the Plague monks and i can't choose between Foetid Blades or woe staffs. Can someone please give me the pros and cons? Ive played WHF a long time back and reading the battle scrolls I'm a bit confused about unit build. Do i still need to build a command squad with a hero, musician, standard bearer? Theres nothing in the battle scrolls for this.

fixed your title.

Hey Brainscan!

You can have as many/little command models as you want with the exception of unit leader/champion/etc. This means you can include multiple banners/musicians, it doesn't matter.

I believe Foetid Blades are better. The reroll to hit and extra attack is really nice, then you stack on the Bale-chime and Contagion Banner it far out performs taking a Woe-stave. I feel it's worth it missing out on an extra inch of range. There is lots of synergy to add to Plague Monks as well, though I don't play them myself and others will need to chime in.

I don't play Pestilens, but I do play Clan rats. I can tell you that the lower to wound roll on the blades alone is better than the extra inch. Plague monks with blades get extra attacks on top of that, so I see no reason at all to ever take the staves aside from asthetics. Congratulations on your choice of army. Pestilens is probably the 2nd strongest way to play Skaven after Skyre. It's a high damage output army, that is balanced by it's comparative frailty. That can usually make for a fun game for both players. You should enjoy playing it.

I don't run pestilens but I'll throw in my 2 cents on what works for me. Plague wind mortars, lots of em. They come out of the Island of Blood starter you can get em for like $10-$15 on ebay. Also there is one set in the Stormfiends box, you have to buy 3 boxes or trade bits to get a whole unit but it's worth it in mortal wounds. They don't need LoS to hit and deal mortal wounds. You just park em behind terrain and tarpit with your other units while you just strip those monsters and leaders of their worth.

Poisoned Wind Mortars, when they hit and wound they are great. Unfortunately they don't hit and wound as often as one might like. Taking them en masse would work, but also be careful of what you target. Try to target units of 10+ to 20+ for the +1 to hit and 6 damage respectively. Personally I'm planning on replacing mine with Ratling Guns for 4D6 shots with a 4+ 4+ -1 R 1D (4 to hit, 4 to wound, Rend -1 1 damage).

I've played Skaven Pestilens and found Foetid Blade Plague Monks to be brutal. Inherent re-rolls to hit with possible re-rolls to wound if buffed from a Plague Furnace. Take units of 20 and send them in in waves. They'll force tons of armor saves.
