Kara Sloan is in my humble opinion the new queen of the mk3 assassination game. Let me say that I don't fear turn 1 assassinations, but if you.want to 'play like you got a pair', cowering in a corner is not the way to go. If you don't move your Warcaster or Warlock up, you aren't playing the game. In scenario games, you must or more or less concede.

The first game I played against the list I got killed t1 using Malekus. Next game was with the Testament of Menoth, I hid my caster behind a wall of jacks, got passage on them and passed to my opponent. On his turn, he Shadow Fired with a GMCA, took out the blocking Jack and assassinated my Caster.

I am going to use Reznik1 against him tomorrow for Witch Hound, but I don't see much.benefit to moving 1 model when I need to move two.

HELP PLEASE!

Reznik is on a medium base, so maybe. However, If he Shadow fires the blocking model, I cannot respond and I die to assassination all over again.

One possible way to fix her is to strip Guided Fire and return deadeye to her.
True Sight across the battle group means no stealth or cloud effects. Access to Taryn and GMCA (Gun Mage Captain Adept) grants Shadow Fire, which bypasses LOS for any targets hit.

My buddy actually ran the list at the tournament and took first (3x assassinations). When he asked for input on the list I suggested an Avenger in place of a Defender, but he decided to take the Defender.
the list was:
Captain Kara Sloan (28)
Reinhardt(4)
5 Hunters (11 each)
Defender (16)
Taryn(5)
GMCA(5)
Trencher Commandos(16) & WA (2)

Guided Fire is an autocast every turn. Boosted ranged attacks for everything in the battlegroup during their activations is too good to pass up. It also allows the Hunters to save their Focus for damage boosting. . . if the first shot misses on feat turn, well, they get another.

Stripping Guided Fire and replacing it with deadeye means that the focus from PowerUp doesn't automatically go towards boosted damage, and may mitigate early game assassinations.

I'm playing the list again tomorrow, maybe using Witch Hound to move behind models that still block line of sight. but how anyone else might be able to mitigate such a disaster was the reason for the thread.

Update: played 2 games against it today, 1st with Reznik1 and the second with Reclaimer2. Made it to turn 3 with Reznik. Visgoth Rhoven and defensive movement of Reznik with witch hound behind un-shadow fired jacks kept him alive; don't try to game the system and try offensive shots with any ranged attacks - keep him behind any available cover.
Second game was with the Testament of Menoth, thought I'd be smart and hide behind a line of wracks, but it turns out that lack of fire immunity is a real killer. My opponent shot one of them with a magical ranged attack, which blew up the other two, and forced the Testament to take 3 Str14 fire damage rolls. 3x 2d6-2 brought me down to one health which the caster killed me with with a single shot from the warcaster, on turn 2.

Pick up some shield guards. Then you can prevent your LoS blocker from being hit by shadow fire.

Visgoth Rhoven comes with 2 shield guards.

You know wracks don't have the choir/Reznik2 ability, ranged attacks just auto-miss while they have a focus on them. Regardless of magical/non-magical. So if you are using them as an LoS bunker just don't pull from them.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

I've not come against Sloan. Very hard to deal with.

I fibbed a bit. It was a spell that set them off. A FOC6 caster with a POW12 spell versus a DEF5 ARM10 target is never a good situation.

Ah fair that makes more sense. I love getting behind a menoth army and spraying wracks/choir down with my donkeys so I understand those stats well

Sloan by herself is no real problem, the Shadow Firing GMCA and Taryn were the game enders. Time to start playing with more terrain.

This though, if your playing without terrain, your at a huge disadvantage. Terrain and scenarios are what make this game and particularly casters like Sloan balanced

Protectorate is actually the best equipped to handle Sloan because she only has 1 source of magic weapons in Arlen Strangeways(2 if you pay a bucket of points for Ayanna and Fynn to make her faction). Which means if you have a jack heavy list with lots of choir, you can really minimize her shooting.

I'd actually recommend Tristan2 in the jack theme list. Reznik, Testament and Malakus are unfortunately going to be just bait. Witch Hound won't do anything because that needs spells to hit, and Sloan doesn't sling spells.

Keep Tristan back as far as possible with the Templar and one of the other jacks to block LoS. Use the Dervish to hunt any Shadowfire early as possible. And just advance on Sloan with a wall of jacks that she can only shoot with 2 of her guns(herself and one jack with Arlen).

You don't outthreat her jacks, but you will outnumber them. Which should buy you the turn you need to close to melee.
