Hey guys.
New player getting into the 40k and Space Marines.

Crimson Fists to be exact!

I've completed painting 2 squads of 10-man tactical marines and really please with how they showed up.

One thing I noticed when I put them together is the emptiness on the marine shoulder pads.
I tried putting on the transfers but weren't really satisfied with the looks of it. And freehand painting the fists in detail seems way too time-consuming.

Any recommendations or solutions?
Or are transfers the most common way to do it.

Oh and I've been searching online and it seems like the GW online store sell Chapter specific shoulder pads for Crimson Fists (along with other chapters) but says 'Webstore Exclusive' on them.

For webstore exclusive items, can I get it ordered to my local GW? Kinda like a pre-order or must I order it personally and get it delivered to my place?

Welcome to 40k, DakkaDakka, and good luck with your Marines!

If you don't want to use transfers or have to paint the chapter symbol freehand, you can certainly order the sculpted shoulderpads from GW.

You have a few options:

1) order from your home computer, set the delivery location to your local GW store. The shipping is free and they'll call you when it arrives.

2) order from the computer inside the GW store. Basically the same as option #1, but the store gets a credit for the sale.

3) order from your computer to be delivered to your house/apartment (you must pay shipping)

GW generally ships out within about 24 hours. If you have it delivered to your local store, check what days they are closed (our local one is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays).

Cheers,

Ooooh~ Didn't know there were ways to order to the local GW store.

I will be sure to put the order in very soon.

(Now to get rid of the plain shoulder pads that I already glued on :( I hope the arms don't break off or anything haha)

Thank you very much for your help!

I also play Crimson Fists, and my army uses a mix of the GW shoulder pads and transfers from Forgeworld. The transfers aren't too difficult to use once you get the hang of them. They key is to get the chemicals Micro Sol and Micro Set which help you apply the transfer and then get it to conform to the curve of the shoulder pads.

Agreed. Microsol and Microset are the best way to put on transfers. You can probably find them at a local hobby store (not the GW store).

Another way, that's pretty close in final appearance, is to use gloss and dull coat.

Paint your shoulder pad completely, let it dry.
Brush on a layer of gloss varnish (I think GW calls theirs 'Ardcoat), let it dry.
Apply your decal with warm water, smooth it out, let it dry.
Brush on another layer of gloss varnish over the decal (to seal it in), let it dry.
Brush on a layer of dull coat varnish (you can use GW's Lahmian Medium), let it dry.

It might take a try or two the first time, but it's usually pretty easy.

Good luck!

The stores in the U.S. do, I certainly hope the Australian stores do too. But check with them before driving out there (if it's far from where you live).

FW don't make it anymore. I bought the last ever one, and it was faulty

Edit: Oh, you meant transfers. I prefer the sculpted shoulder pads.

@kronk yeah I meant the transfers. FW sent me a load of the citadel sculpted ones as an alternative. Unfortunately I'd already painted the full company, so they never got used. Shame as they do look great.
