Subject: Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 23 January 2017: Rogues and Scoundrels
Welcome all to the first challenge of 2017! For anyone who's unfamiliar with the format, this is a simple community challenge open to anyone on Dakka, the aim of the game being to paint a model or set of models relating to the month's theme and win points for doing so!
This month's theme is Rogues and Scoundrels, so the entries we're looking for are the sort of folks who would stab you in the back, rob you blind or definitely shoot first; not necessarily bad guys, just the sort of characters you wouldn't want to turn your back on! As ever, the theme is totally open to interpretation, so if you think it's a suitable entry, it probably is!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 4 images and one separate image would count as your 5 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st January and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st January. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
I have a few more figures from eBay on the way which I might sub in, but I'll be doing a squad of Eldar Pirates for my 2nd edition army. I'll pick five when I'm done (if I finish, this one could take a while).

Nice! The Long Drong pirates are such classic models - can't wait to see that painted up!
Yeah I love those guys to, I'm a bit smug that I bought a dozen of them at the time they came out and still have them. One of the many projects to do in the future.
Looking forward to seeing it Nev.
My proof, not entirely sure which way I'll go yet.
either Flash Gits, Kaptin Badrukk or a tenuous link to rogues if it is ok with Para to Star Wars (rogue 1....) and making an Ork X-wing..... The model is for 6+ so it might challenge me mentally.

...I was just going to paint up this one nice-looking freebooter nob I put together...but now I'm leaning heavily towards turning a really rough old leman russ into some kind of land-pirate-ship looted wagon for him to ride around in, and a couple of scurvy crew for him to yell at...this is going to take a good deal more rummaging and figuring out before I can post proof pics...but providing I can bodge something together that's not too godawful, that's my plan
MG, all three of those options sound great man! ...I'm really not sure which one I'd rather see your take on...you have reminded me that I really should get myself a badrukk model though, I've wanted one to paint for ages now...
...it's good to be green!

I'm in with these Chaos Space Marines:
I think they qualify as Rogues and/or Scoundrels! The model on the far left is the Aspiring Champion, one of the Chosen from the Dark Vengeance set. The rest are standard CSM models. They will be painted to match the rest of my Khorne Daemonkin.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 12 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

I've got nothing that fits the bill this month, but I'll be watching with interest. Hopefully I'll be back next month!
Good luck everyone!
Dark Angels/Deathwing - just getting started!
Space Marines - Stark Crusaders 4500pts/PL244 (2700pts painted)
Eldar - Biel Tan 2000pts
Space Wolves 1500pts
So first off, proof; they've been undercoated and partially basecoated in desert yellow whilst I had the airbrush out. I'll be picking five out of the squad, but painting the whole lot together:
Second, the story(s) behind the choice; I've always liked the idea of the Tau Empire being inclusive and willing to accept anyone who wants to join, so I wanted to build some Gue've'sa and other allies, not as separate squads, but as part of a regular Firewarrior unit. I got one of the new Firewarrior/Breacher kits last year and built it as a Breacher Squad, which leaves you with heads, backpacks weapons and shoulder pads for normal Firewarriors, so I raided my bits box and threw together this motley crew, starting with the female sergeant using a spare Shadowsun head.
As I was building them I started trying to think of a justification for the hodge-podge nature of the squad and an idea came to me. In order to get the Cadre Fireblades, Darkstrider, etc., there must be some Firewarriors who forgo battlesuit training, but still get promoted as infantry. So my sergeant is actually a Shas'vre (roughly lieutenant equivalent) who specialises in behind-the-lines / precision strike type missions; infantry based but more agressive than Pathfinders. By refusing to go through battlesuit training she's a bit of a rebel to her commanders and her preference for close quarters infantry action means that a lot of her comrades consider her a bit unstable and blood-thirsty. However, she's damn good at her job, so she's been given the freedom to put together her own squad, choosing from anyone in the local Tau forces who suits her needs and equipping them however they see fit, rather than accoring to standard Tau doctrine.
I imagine them as a sort of Dirty Dozen / Howling Commando's type lot; a bunch of misfits (or Rogues and Scoundrels if you like ) who really don't fit into the normal Tau forces, but are too damn useful to get rid of. You send them in and they get the job done, just don't ask how(!)
Finally, a little bit of work in progress, hopefully starts to make the details a little bit easier to see:

Those wings make me think it's gonna be Buzz Lightyear. Your avatar would seem to bear this out. This should be good!
Whoa, whoa! Are you suggesting the greatest Space Ranger of all time, Buzz Lightyear, is a rogue or scoundrel?
Just remember, not every cadet to go through the Space Ranger Academy had good intentions. One was an agent and he had a warped sense of right and wrong.

I'm in for this one chaps/chappettes: I'll be doing my best Sly Marbo/Lawrence of Arabia type thing. I will post a WIP picture when I get home on Friday for alas, I am away with work for the week :(

Quite a range of entries already which is interesting. I thought I'd update quickly since I have settled on an entry. I'm in a modding mood so will be doing an Ork X-wing
WIP
Tried to make the guns fit the more chunky 40k style but still look like x-wing guns
This is certainly going to be an interesting round...
I will be entering, but right now, I need to complete two starter forces for a Team Yankee tournament. When I do enter, it'll be with some Freebooter Bikers, or a Trukk - either should look good as the first completed models in my display cabinet
G.A - Should've called myself Ghost Ark
Makeup Whiskers? This is War Paint!

I will be painting the Clancy Gang from Blackwater Gulch. I will actually be using washes for everything (or close to it). Since taking my proof pic (took a bit to upload on work wifi) I have the majority of one model already done. Hardest part is finding a nice brown wash for the leather and gun stocks, so I may use some real paint. I also should have brought some primer and white paint to touch up if I spill over too much... oops. Except for bases, these will pretty much be done tonight if I keep up on motivation. All washes are made via recipes provided by Les from Awesome Paint Jobs.
The fluff to make them Scoundrels below.
The most feared of all the families in Blackwater Gulch, the Clancy Gang have been allowed to run roughshod through the streets. They often take protection money from the few shopkeeps who remain, or start fights in the Golden Coin just for the heck of it. Armed to the teeth, with an attitude twice as ugly, The Clancy Gang do what they want, when they want and don’t care who gets hurt in the meantime.
Hopefully these are in an acceptable entry state. I'd have liked to put unbuilt proof but I built them last night before the wonderful Nevelon suggested I try my hand at this comp. So here they are, I'll be painting 5 of these Bloodbrides. DE in general fit the bill of rogues and scoundrels just by their very nature I'd imagine.
