AoS Questions that are a bit noobish yet needed. So lets jump right into it.
1.) Can you shoot into, or out of, melee combat?
2.) Can Hero's join units or do they just have to run around on their own?
3.) Which Warscrolls are the most updated, the ones on
GW website, or the ones on the
AoS app for smart devices?
4.) Are the Grand Alliance Books and the Generals Hand Book the only two rule books out as of now?
5.) How do you determine which Faction your army falls under for battleline units purposes?
6.) Melee vs Ranged attacks what seems to be more effective right now?
And that sums it up sorry if they are a bit basic trying to get an idea of how the game works. Thanks in advance!!
1) Yes, you can do both. IF the models have
LoS with the target unit. That means that, if you're locked in combat, you may be restricted to only shooting the unit attacking you.
2) No, hero units are on their own. This is compensated by them having increased toughness in the form of better saves and wounds and not being able to suffer
ID.Heroes have, normally, five wounds or more, with usually a 4+ or 3+ save, which can be improved by being on terrain or having cast a mystic shield. Mortal wounds, outside very few armies, are a rarity.
3) I'd say both are more on less on par.
4) The only real rulebook is
GHB. The grand alliance books are army books, codex for the whole range of armies, if you will. Now, ALL books have the basic rules on them. My recommendation is this: get
GHB. If you're playing a specific army that has a battle tome (SE, extremis chamber, etc...), take their army book since it contains their lore and, those that are post pestilens/
FEC, it's rather good. If you're making an army that hasn't a battle tome yet... you
could get the
GA book for their formations and unit profiles but... ehhhh.
5)All units have keywords regarding the army their own: for example, the Brutes, Ardboyz, and Megabosses have the Keyword Ironjaw. IF all your models share a keyword belonging to a specific faction (say... you have only gutbusters or you're only taking sylvaneth), you ARE that faction. An army of those three units will be Ironjawz and will have the two first units as their battleline. BUT if you include EVEN ONE MODEL, you lose the specific alleigance. If, for example, added a butcher, I'd lose my IJ alleigance and be generic destruction.
6) Both. It depends on the army. Turn 1 assaults are not a rarity here, my army itself can easily have half of its numbers upon you by turn 1, but they can be counterattacked by many methods. Massive shooting existists but outside a very specific army build (the infamous dual-gautfyre, and even then it's subjective on the skaven getting a double turn) you won't get tabled without a chance of acting. A balance is recommended, though.Things die fast here, even more than Horus Heresy.
