This week I have a combat patrol game against Eldar. Definitely not easy.

2 units of single Obliterators - 140 pts
5 havocs with autocannons, aspiring champion completely stock - 115 pts
5 CSM with aspiring champion (all with bolt pistol and CCW) in a rhino with a dirge caster - 115 pts
1 chaos spawn - 30 pts

Idea is to keep 1 oblits in reserve to drop in as needed. Rush the spawn and CSM in the rhino up. Let the havocs (with tank hunter!) take pot shots at the enemy transport.

Should I ditch the spawn to sink 30 points into something else?

One final note: I am not a fan of bikes.

Hey;

Having had quite a lot of experience playing combat patrol:
I've gotta ask if you know loosely what your opponent may bring? at 400pts the Eldar are versatile; and can either spam the highly efficient scatterbikes, or field a metric-sh*t tonne of bodies via guardians? -I only ask because you mention an enemy transport? have you been made aware of the potential adversaries?

Eldar have wide access to rending; so I'd be inclined to scrap the 2 obliterators. particularly if there's a likelihood of windriders. that's approaching half your points, for 2 minis. can't say they seem effective. if you've gotta have em, invest in MoN to toughen them up a little?

The Spawn will either do REALLY well, or REALLY badly; he's fast, semi-tough, and should kill units he engages, unless they're specialty is melee. see: Striking Scorpions, Howling Banshees.

I know that Rhino is cheap as chips, but as your only vehicle may die to any sort of anti tank fire. -Bright lances, Fire Dragons, Dark Reapers etc. either drop it; or grab a second one and let the Havocs take them? load both out with Havoc launchers? 12 pts for a small blast is quite easy to pay back in kills.

just a few thoughts, open to discuss?

Thanks so much. This will be my first combat patrol and almost allof my experience is against Imperial armies and orks. I have no idea what my opponent will bring, but it's meant to be a friendly game.

Happy to scrap the Oblits per your logic. I'd like to keep the spawn because he wrecked fave in our last game so he'll eat up a lot of shooting.

Rhino is there to keep the CSM from being blown off the board prior to assault. Definitely open to other ideas.

whatcha got available to you in your wider collection?

In combat patrol, you're screaming for efficiency. and as CSM or their loyalist counterparts, you're not gonna get huge amounts in terms of units.

I think the thing that bothers me most about the list is the model count? like I get it, you're playing 400pts; but for that you're getting 13 minis and a tank.

I'd also lose the CC loadout on the marines. with battle focus even guardians are gonna be more than capable of outrunning your boys on foot. try a list that takes a second rhino and a 2nd havoc squad, and split the 4 autocannons between the 2 squads, thus making you able to fire them all on the move from your mobile bunkers. what you end up with is twice as much armour, the nearly the same body count, protected heavy weapons, that can fire on the move through the rhinos firing points.

don't know how many points that leaves you? but grab a troop to make it legal; bolter marines or cultists if you're really pushed for points

Total CSM collection which is at least assembled includes:

Troops/elites, etc.:
65 cultists (1/2 w/CCW and 1/2 w/ autoguns)
10 CSM with bolters and icon of vengeance
12 Khorne berserkers
10 raptors (1 set is magnetized, other is the Finecast version)
5 warp talons
5 possessed
5 terminators (magnetized)
5 havocs with autocannons
5 chosen (DV)
3 obliterators
2 spawn

Vehicles:
3 helbrutes (1 magnetized, 2 are from DV)
1 rhino w/ havoc launcher (I have 2 more I need to assemble)
1 vindicator
1 heldrake w/ bale flamer

HQs:
1 daemon prince
1 counts as dark apostle
1 chaos lord/sorcerer in terminator armor (magnetized)
1 chaos lord (DV)
1 chaos sorcerer

Daemons:
+ Any standard khorne daemon (bloodletters, skulls cannons, dogs, etc.) but I'd rather CSM utilized the new traitor legions.

You're comments about only having 13 models is good. I was hoping I could camp with obsec oblits (since they are considered troops using Iron Warriors legion rules) but wasn't aware how much rending that they have.

Unfortunately, I haven't put together a second rhino (my next project once I finish my terminators) and my land raider is half assembled (painting in parts) so the single rhino is my only transport. I also only have 1 squad of havocs with autocannons assembled.

Hey sorry to pitch in without contributing but what's Combat Patrol ? Like a bigger Kill Team ?

@Gamerguy: Thanks for the compliment. Using the Adepticon CP rules, you can take vehicles with armor >12, but it gets reduced to 12 and hull points get reduced to 3.

@Aaranis: Combat patrol I would describe as a simplified version of 40k, but not so different as kill team that it fundamentally changes how it works (e.g., each model is it’s own unit). Typically 400-500 points and often played on a 4’x4’ board. I am using the Adoption rules for it: http://www.adepticon.org/wpfiles/2016/201640Kcp.pdf

Okay thanks, I thought it was a new official gameset that I hadn't heard of.

I don't know if there's an official supplemental for it, but there is some Games Workshop documentation for it: https://warhammerworld.games-workshop.com/wp-content/uploads/Warhammer-40000-Combat-Patrol-FINAL-v.2.pdf

Ok, here's an alternative list based on feedback:

Using Iron Warriors legions rules (6+ FNP and havocs have tank hunter)

HQ: Sorcerer, level 1 (psychic shriek), sigil of corruption - 85 pts

Troops:
5 CSM w/ 1 plasma gun in rhino w/ combi-bolter- 125 pts
5 havocs with autocannons - 115 pts
10 cultists with autoguns, 1 heavy stubber - 65 points

That's 390 points, so I have 10 to play with. Maybe give something (2 melta bombs or gift of mutation). Rending will have less impact on this list and I will have 20 Ob Sec troops.

The Iron Warrior rules only let Oblits and Muts as Troops, not Havocs (sadly!).

Just for the sake of being complete, I played the game last night. It was a good list, but hadn't anticipated that my opponent brought no vehicles. He had 3 squads of dire avengers and an exarch (Dire Avenger Shrine).

The havocs did 90% of the work. I had really bad luck with psychic shriek, but once I killed their exarch they basically couldn't hurt the rhino. 6+ feel no pain only helped once, but better than nothing.

I would probably use this list again.
