A request for advice…a good talking to…

With the opening of a new gaming club pretty much on my doorstep, I’m once again looking to get back into 40K.

Now, I’m a bit of an army tart as my post history probably shows.

I’ve sold off most of my 40K armies retaining only my beloved Tyranids and Dark Eldar.

While I love these two almost as much as I hate Space Wolves I do have a hankering to start with a clean slate…maybe play an army that gets these Saving Throw things…something that relies more on shooting but with a bit of shenanigans…less gribbly evil in looks…maybe even a ‘good guy faction’*

This brings me to consider the following options:

Tau: I like the models, although not as much as Nids/DE. They’re good guys who like to shoot things in the face. The have a decent amount of shenanigans. I loved magnetizing my Crisis suits back in 4th/5th when I had a Tau army. I don’t have any models for them. I won’t be cheesing them with RipTides or adding in any allies, except maybe some Gue’sva. Can start the army relatively cheaply with SC! And other boxes.

Dark Angels: I’ve got two DV DA sets, plus both HH plastic boxed games, the BA Termies from SH, a Dreadnought. They’re tough. They get saves. I don’t think they are subtle but I think they can do ‘speed’. I like the robed look on Marines. Downside…yet more bloomin’ Space Marines. I’m sure whatever club I go to there will be a majority of MEQ already. And I have background issues with the hunt but they are kind of ‘good guys’. Suspect I would need to buy a lot of Rhinos and Drop Pods which might push the cost up to that of Tau.

Plastic Sisters: I used to play SoB. Love the background and asthetic. Not currently an option as…well they aren’t actually out yet. Costs and timeframe unknown.

Paint what I damn well have: I have a lot of unpainted, unassembled Tyranids and Dark Eldar. A lot. This is the sensible, dull option.

So, as it’s a rainy Monday lunchtime, I call upon my fellow gamers to make helpful suggestions, or a nice cup of tea.

Thank you in advance.

*Yes, yes, nobody in 40k is a good guy.

Personally, I would consider looking at Blood Angels. Nobody will accuse you of being a power gamer for starters, as Blood Angels don't get any of what is commonly considered 'OP' regarding other loyalist power armored forces. No Gladius, or Lions Blade, etc.

You also get access to some unique units such as Librarian Dreadnoughts, and Death Company, which are always fun to push (at least, to me anyway) and you can even do a successor chapter of Blood Angels if you prefer that uses robed death company to get that look in while still being flavorful. .

Lastly, the Blood Angels fluff is pretty awesome in my ever so humble opinion.

Just offering an alternative thought. Hope it helps and best of luck. Take it easy.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

Am in the process of painting up models I collected but never got around to. Did up a set of Raptors over the weekend and found it more satisfying than I would have expected.

There's something nice about going back to an area of your imagination you haven't explored in a while, remembering old questions / ideas / challenges you haven't gotten around to exploring.

Don't discount what you already have as boring. Work on them while you work out the ultimate answer to the question.

Paint what you have and wait for Sisters.

If they don't come out, you're playing armies that you liked and you are getting them painted. Most probably they will come out now though (and this is coming from a guy that finally threw his arms in their air and said screw this wait when Skitarii came out) so you have something to look forward to, and a brand spanking new army once they drop.

@Red_Thirst: Ha! I used to play a BA successor chapter who worshiped the Emperor above Sanguinus. I do still prefer the Blood Angels background...particularly Lamenters.

@Purifier and techsoldaten: I believe that you gentlemen are right. What with AoS, Warmachine and DFC I've got enough models to keep me going for years.

@Table: Yeah, I was thinking of using the HH stuff to build Consecrators and the 'modern' stuff to build Guardians of the Covenant.

I will keep hold of the Space Marines while working on my Dark Eldar and Tyranids. If the new Sisters haven't turned up by then, or I don't like them then I can convert them to being Lamented.

Thank you all for your replies.

How about Corsairs?

I started with Eldar, then branched out into exodites and have been putting together kitbashed Corsairs using all the Eldar and Dark Eldar buts and pieces I had lying around. Been fantastic fun, and the compatibility of the various Eldar kits is astounding

From what I've been told, they're a really fun army to play with if that's your thing too

Check out may pan-Eldar projects http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/702683.page

Also my Rogue Trader-esque spaceport factions http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/709686.page

Oh, and I've come up with a semi-expanded Shadow War idea and need some feedback! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/726439.page

Lastly I contribute to a blog too! http://objectivesecured.blogspot.co.uk/ Check it out! It's not just me
