Starting a new campaign :

Well my Star Wars campaign is now entering the final adventure. Aptly enough t'was written and designed as a trilogy of adventures with linking elements between them, partly for fun and also because I'm fucking pretentious like that. :D

The first arc saw the players as 2 jedi and a Scout/pilot. They all died, heroically, fighting against the return of a Sith Lord, betrayed at the last as Order 66 was given.

The 2nd arc saw them play as an elite Clone Trooper kill team/special ops, who gradually came to see the horrible truth about the New Order -- not least due to uncovering information on and about their previous characters, including an encounter with the force ghosts of said characters too -- and who in the end turned against it and in fact helped found, fund and train the burgeoning Rebel Alliance.

This 3rd arc has been set during the Rebellion era and has seen the party -- now numbering 4 thanks to the welcome addition of Big Dave's presence -- recruited into the Rebellion and performing a variety of down and dirty missions. During which they've uncovered worrying information that the nigh on mythical "Team 7" of Clone Troopers have more or less gone insane and are pretty much hell bent on destroying everyone and everything. throw in the seemingly returning threat of a certain Sith Lord and, of course the actual Empire... and they've got their hands pretty full.

All in all I've enjoyed the campaign immensely, it's been a blast to run and, thankfully, my players have enjoyed it as well. We've tweaked a few rules here and there, as well as ignored a fair few as well truth be told. Not least as, technically, there's at least 2 -3 different editions of the d20 version we use, all with different rules.

But we've had fun.

I am somewhat burnt out with the setting however I must confess. But we've been playing for over 3 years so that's understandable. And I must confess that at times the urge to actually just be a player is almost overwhelming.

But t'would seem that this is not to be...

.. but , with a bit of luck, a change of setting and system will help...

So, after a good few years, we'll be plunging into the fantasy genre again. I was tempted to run some WFRPG -- and will -- but last year, back when Mr. Tim and his charming, democracy lovin', cornflake milkshake denied other half visited I picked up the Pathfinder rulebook and having been dipping in and out of this ever since.

Since, essentially, my players are quite lazy, but they do have something of a familiarity with the d20 system, it seems logical to use this.

Picked up a few of the other books since then, mainly the first 2 bestiary books and the GM guide. The latter is very good indeed, a very well thought out and useful guide even for hoary old RPG veterans.

I'm not going to use the main/official setting. Partially, as I may have mentioned, as my players are pretty lazy and there's no fucking way they'll ever read any background apart from small snippets that I throw at them.

Plus it means that I don't have to buy ( and learn) all the books and supplements. Conversely not doing this does go someway towards putting more work with regards to NPCs and the like on my back, but I am, alas, used to that.

So I dug up some random old RPG maps, which after a bit of research seem to be from the GreyHawk campaign setting, and this will be where we start adventuring soon.

Characters have been generated :

A brick outhouse of a Half Elf Paladin.
A human Cleric , specialising in healing and ... err... The Sun IIRC.
A slightly weedy yet nimble elf ranger.
A incredibly weak yet charismatic and smart gnomish Bard.

Little bit WTF about the apparent # of cantrips the last one there seems to get, but we can work that out and I guess they're not that great either,

They're starting off at L2, each with 1 fairly minor magic item they started off then with x2 the starting money.

So they're quite well equipped, for low level but not over powered.

I like having the characters set in advance, as it makes it easier to fit the plot around them and them into the plot.

... so..

The Elf wound up with loads and loads of money, and a ring of protection +1...

..hmm... so.... he then is an Elven prince. Something like 28th in line to the throne, but royalty nevertheless. He found the intrigues and plotting of the royal court dull and not for him, so he's set off to explore the world and travel. His family aren't happy about it.. but he's young, he'll grow out of it in 30 or 40 years right ? His chosen enemy is orcs.... hmm... So we'll have them have killed his father. This gives the character some motivation, removes a degree of possible "protection" from the character -- dad can't save you ! -- whilst still leaving his (royal) Mother around if I/he does want to play up that angle, it also gives me a route into some elven royal court intrigue or just a link to having adventures with them.

The Cleric has a focus on healing and Sunlight.. hmm... is good aligned and channels positive energy, and has powers versus the Undead. ... hmm.... So, after some discussion and a look at the map, he comes from the far western lands, lands which are now mostly desert. So, building a bit of history into the game, this land was once ruled by a powerful elite of Vampires who were, eventually, overthrown in a conflict that devastated the land. presumably a religiously inspired uprising. This in turn means that his clerics are often honour bound to journey out into foreign lands and, literally, spread the light of their faith. Driving back the darkness and burning the undead. This means he can journey around quite plausibly, explains his powers, goes someway towards explaining how he wound up in the arse end of nowhere, which is where the game starts and provides us with some RP opportunity for some stranger in a strange land type scenarios. Plus I think it would be quite amusing to have the character add garlic to everything he eats ! :D

This also means that I can throw in some skeletons/similar as low level opponents, the extra punch that the cleric and paladin provide will help here. In fact the plan will, of course, involve and old tomb that has been opened.

.. There's no rogue so I have to be careful of the trap issue..

.. Got it ! A map in a supplement I was going to steal from shows an excavation on an island. The island is large enough that they can have a few scrapes and mishaps on it before they move on, yet also be small and safe enough that they shouldn't get killed straight away. In fact our erstwhile runaway prince can have acted as a guide/guard for said expedition, which gets him onto the Island... and pits him in the tavern where the others will, of course, have wound up staying in.

The expedition is out of the town, so ... if ;) ... they dig up or discover something best left alone no one else will know. Which means, as experienced archaeologists, they could well have disabled .... most of the traps in the site. There's also an added motivation for the ranger to check up on them : not only is he of good alignment, but he's wise enough to know that dead patrons don't hire you again or recommend your services...

.... and what if his mom hears about this !

The Gnomish Bard's reason for being where we start is that he has left his homeland to both visit his Uncle, who lives on the Northern end of the Island and to, hopefully, gather a few new tales, songs and so on as he does so. With him being pretty frail and not really all that capable in a fight -- Str score of 6 IIRC, bless that weapon finesse feat eh ! -- it makes sense that he wouldn't want to go off on his own anywhere too dangerous and when he does trek about it's likely that he'd seek out some muscle for protection. Thankfully his high Cha score justifies why the others have, thus far anyway, been cool with this. Their alignments help as well of course.

The Paladin I was a bit more unsure of what to do with. I didn't want to have him just a wanderin' seeking a quest or something, as that's pretty much what the Cleric's origin is -- being a Sun God follower they're required to undergo the " Raa-path" ( that's what it's labelled in the notes anyway, might change later if we come up with something better) when they must spend a year and a day journeying east, until they come across a sign or a message from their God. So given the distances involved our Cleric must have been travelling for quite a while then.. which is good as it provides further impetus for him to get involved with whatever adventure unfolds. -- and I'm keen to help give each character their own origin.

.. so.... after a bit of thought and contemplation, I do find staring at the map and idly plotting out places they might go and what they might encounter there, I decided that he should come from "The Great Kingdom". I decided that this, more or less, have a kind of Roman Empire feel to it, with the once great Kingdom now in a slow decline, the various smaller kingdoms and states around it on the map having once been part of it, now some are vassals and others and wholly independent. This helps with the character's name, so he is now "Titus".

So the Great Kingdom, whilst not a Theocracy, will be heavily religiously influenced. Which means that people like Paladins can be sent on missions for the Church/state, which leaves me the opportunity to perhaps throw in some intrigue and scheming between these factions if I so choose at a later date. In fact I'm somewhat considering the idea of a plotline involving the death of the current King, with his heir being young, a young boy perhaps, who is then being influenced or pushed by someoneorother to forcibly reclaim the land now controlled by the now independent states.

I decided that Titus is the 2nd oldest of 4 sons. His older brother is also a Paladin, who is off questing/doing Paladin "stuff", his other two brothers being a humble guard ( not divinely touched or inspired it seems ) and a newly invested cleric. Gives me some NPCs/contacts in the capital as/when I need them later. And, of course, also throws up some other potential plotlines.

So with this decided then... The Paladin has been sent bearing an icon, a symbolic representation of the links between the Great Kingdom and Angler's Island.

.. Which, handily enough, puts all the party together, somewhere fairly remote, and staying in an Inn.

May be a silly question related to Deathwatch

I'm planning on starting Deathwatch soon when I get home (fingers crossed), and I was wondering what size models? 28mm? And do you get to pick your wargear? Or do you roll for it/have a kind of allowance/it is picked by whoever's in charge? Because I'd want to get my model together and well painted, but if I don't know what wargear I'll get then I'm not sure how to. I'm going to buy the book when I return home, so if the answers are all in there then could one person just say 'its in the book mate' and then I'll be sorted

Forbidden Lore and the Ecclesiarchy [DH]

I am running an campaign in Dark Heresy with a group of Initiates of the Ecclesiarchy, instead of Inquisitorial Acolytes. The team is a Sister Hospitaller, a Red Dead Redemptionist (ayuck), and a Witchhunter type of Cleric. In my previous campaigns run with Acolytes, I have had players that enjoy roleplaying Skill or Talent developments, like cleaning their gun more thoroughly after taking Basic Weapon Training or spending downtime during travels reading a relevant Imperial text before taking a Common Lore, oh or preaching to a ship's crew frequently before taking Air of Authority (true story bro). For Acolytes that like to roleplay having books or files before taking a Lore Skill, it was always easy (relative to being Inquisitorial Agents) to justify a player having a forbidden tome when roleplaying to take a Forbidden Lore. The problem I have run into recently in that I have the Cleric wants to like texts that his character could study to learn more to fight the forces of evil, be they heresy, chaos or xenos. The characters started the campaign with the usual "no prior knowledge of Chaos," so the Cleric mainly wants to learn more about heresy and what is heresy, etc.

Both my player and I are well versed in 40k lore but neither of us can figure out where members of the Ecclesiarchy get such information from? Unlike an Inquisitor, we don't see how a Bishop or other clergyman would have access to such forbidden works or if they are non-forbidden types of books within the church or Imperium that hold such information. Do you imagine certain agents of the Ecclesiarchy having hidden archives of forbidden knowledge; kept for the sake of protecting and guarding from those who would abuse the knowledge? That is like the only idea I could come up with. Do any other Dark Heresy GMs have any suggestions?

But does anyone have any idea how marines improve themselves with bionics or... well anything really from basic starters; requisiton made sense but constantly returning the tools? What about a marine who gets access to newer and cooler things? Just not in the cards?

ontop of that, any suggestions/tips to avoid more confusion down the line if i decide to play this game. basically things I might not be aware of ect.

Blood Bowl League

Well, with a certain well known American sporting event kicking off at 6:38pm Eastern on Sunday, it's inspired my little group to figure out the nerdiest way to celebrate the Super Bowl. So, of course, we're starting a new Blood Bowl league (as if the subject didn't give that away). I haven't played much since you could still buy Blood Bowl and Death one in GW stores (and some UK Toys R Us stores), so it's practically brand new to me again.

One thing that isn't brand new is that, once again, I'm the only one playing a definitely pass-happy team. Last time that worked out, as they all built teams to stomp on each other, meaning I could run around them and ended up champ.

Here's the 8 teams:

League is going to be round robin style, each team plays every other team twice (so home and away), and then the top 4 go into a play-off for the prestigious Blood Bowl trophy itself. We're planning to get at least 3 games in Sunday before the Super Bowl starts (multiple boards mean multiple games)

The teams are:

1. Yvresse Towers (High Elves) - This is me, team has 1 thrower, 2 catchers and 9 linemen (blockers aren't worth the extra $ starting up) and two re-rolls. All our teams get 3 Fan Factor for free (house rule), so team is valued at 1,030,000 GP (team rating 103)
2. Everpeak Redbeards (Dwarfs) - this is going to be my first game opponent, I don't know what he has, except for no Death Roller, and that his team rating will also be 103.
3. Azhag's SeaOrcs (Orcs)
4. Quatar Warsphinxes (Khemri) <-- Not played a Khemri eam before, have played and struggled against regular undead
5. Nuln Arsenal (Human) - known as the Gunners
6. Karak Kadrin Slayers (Dwarfs)
7. Tzeentch Terrors (Chaos)
8. Squigsburgh Stealers (Orcs)

Starting this thread because I intend to have match reports for all the Yvresse Towers games posted on here, starting with the season-opener vs. the Redbeards. I'll likely be using the old play-by-email blood bowl tool for pictures.

NEXT: Game 1!

Your opinion: best Blood Bowl team for a tourney?

As the thread title says. I have my first vacation in 7 years coming up in two weeks and at the end of said vacation is a Blood Bowl tourney. I pretty much have the game down and have played a fair amount, but never competitively. I have the Orcs and Humans that come in the starter box as well as some Chaos to convert, but I can still order one if need be. I'm thinking Orcs are how I want to go, with 4 Black Orcs, 4 Blitzers, 1 Thrower, 1 Lineman, 1 Goblin and 3 Re-rolls. Any better ideas? I love the Necromantic team's play style mainly because of Werewolves, Ghouls and tons of Regen, but that team is currently made of DnD minis which won't be allowed :D Orcs let me play passing, cage or a moderate running game as opposed to just running with the Necros.
Suggestions on how to introduce the campaigns main villian?

As the GM I love adding a main villain to my campaigns since they are fun to mess with and always provide a sense of amusement for my players.

This time my group is running a pirate themed version of rogue trader and I want their main villain to be an ork pirate named Gulgoz Skulleater.

I'm trying to think of how to introduce him.... so does anyone have any suggestions?

My ideas for the rest of the campaign are as follows:

1. Trouble at a trade port
2.	Ghost ship lost in the warp
3.	Space hulk filled with tyranids
4.	Abandoned Tau Colony: Drones are still active
5.	Travelling harlequin circus
6.	Arbitress Task Force
7.	Imperial fleet
8.	Void sharks
9.	Mutiny
10.	Inquisition Black Ship
11.	Slaanesh invested craftworld
12.	Nurgle zombie planet
13.	Tzeentch excavation operations
14.	Khorne raiding party
15.	Warp Storms
16.
Rogue Trader :D Novice Gm second thread , further questions

Hey there Dakka

Rogue Trader Rule book and GM kit came few days ago and i have been diligently reading though the dataslates and ancient scriptures  :D

Big thanks to Lynata, Balance, Marco Skoll, Coinbiter and Big Mek Wurrzog and everyone else who posted on my original thread of questions

So far i have myself and 3 others who will 95% sure will join us on this perilous adventure :D there is a possible extra guy who has experience in Dungeons and Dragons GM'ing but i dont personally know him, my friend who went to yale who is joining us said he would ask him if he wanted to join, but hasnt said yet if he is or not.

I made an agreement with one of the players that we would take turns Gm'ing so i could have a go at playing with a character sometimes. The idea is that if his character gets injured enough , he could "leave" for say a week or so gametime, and my character would take his place in the squad. Does this sound appropriate? or should i just sit out and Gm ( which i dont mind doing) either way is cool with me :D

Today two players will be generating their characters as im able to meet with them, as far as i can tell one player is going to go Seneschal, who is good at bartering, speech and criminal activity ( for thoughs of you who have played Fallout New Vegas, think a 40k Benny guy)
The other said he wants to be a more military based guy, able to use heavy weapons later on.

The guy who i wont be able to meet up with for a little while wants to play a kinda assassin like guy, weve established he is from a death world so far over xbox live :D other than that he generally said he wants to use knives and rifles.

So far i dont quite understand profit factors , if that could be explain id be greatfull, thanks for your time

Forum/website recommendations for finding a good roleplaying group online?

I have a regular group that does Dark Heresy and other sci-fi games, but they really don't want to play fantasy sessions. Which is unfortunate for me, as I'd like some variety, and also unfortunately, I have a bit of limitations-- I don't have nor will I ever et a microphone (me talking would be too much noise and bother my housemates, and I don't like talking while I play anyway), so the only way I can participate in voice chat based games is if the chat function has a voice synthesizer (like Ventrilo) I can type in to. I'd prefer to simply have a text based chat system, instead, but most online groups want to use skype, and I don't know if skype has a synthesizer I could use.

I know not many people in this forum read this part of the board, so sadly I don't have much hope of picking up a group here.

But does anyone here have recommendations where I can pick up some other players and get a game on chat, say over Steam's chat function-- or YIM, or AIM, or etc? I'm looking mostly for a dnd session, preferably 4.0 (I haven't really had a chance to try it out yet past a few sessions in a group that immediately dispersed because of IRL stuff, which infuriates me), but I'm also willing to try out new (for me) systems such as legend of the five rings or second edition warhammer fantasy roleplay (the roleplaying game, not the card game).

complete novice looking for advice in RPG games.

Hey there Dakka

me and my friend group ( currently consists of me and 3-4 others) play 40k, and we love the backstory, fluff, setting, grimdark , the entire spectrum ( except the cost :*) :D )

We also love RPG games, though we have never played anything like DnD, nothing like that.. I was looking into some RPG games, and came across Rogue Trader, Death Watch, Dark Heresy and Warhammer Fantasy Role-play.
Ive read though a number of threads and from what iv read , it sounds really quite indepth, but im not swayed by this, to survive is to perceiver! i shall tame the beast! :wow:

i love the sound of Rogue Trader, as i like the idea of the struggling hero's against enemies
I also like the idea of Death watch ( everyone loves Super human warriors, as do i, but i dont particuly like the idea of being OP :nono: :D )

Dark heresy and Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play i have looked at but not sure about at the moment.

I would most likly end up being GM , or DM, or how ever you put it  as none of the others , in my experience, would take it seriously and they are quite competitive so, there would be a chance theyd "cheat" the rules :nono: :D

can anyone give me advice on how to start, as i have no experience in these games, and what the best course of action would be

Thanks for your time

5th edition D & D...

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/10/arts/video-games/dungeons-dragons-remake-uses-players-input.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all
But there might yet be hope for Dungeons & Dragons, known as D&D. On Monday, Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro subsidiary that owns the game, is expected to announce that a new edition is under development, the first overhaul of the rules since the contentious fourth edition was released in 2008. And Dungeons & Dragons’ designers are also planning to undertake an exceedingly rare effort for the gaming industry over the next few months: asking hundreds of thousands of fans to tell them how exactly they should reboot the franchise

Since the game’s birth an estimated 20 million people have played it and spent $1 billion on its products.
.. in all honesty I'd have thought more money than that would have been spent.
Edition wars have also wounded the game. Various rules systems have been released over Dungeons & Dragons’ 38-year history: Basic, Advanced, Advanced 2nd edition, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0. Devotion to particular rules can be fanatical. Hostilities about how to best play the game — for example, how a sorcerer casts spells — flare up among the core fan base.

A result, said David M. Ewalt, a senior editor at Forbes and the author of a forthcoming history of Dungeons & Dragons, has been a fractured fan base. The game is a group activity, he said, and playing together is tricky when players use different rules. “Imagine trying to organize a basketball team, if the point guard adheres to modern league rules, but the center only knows how to play ancient Mayan handball.”

When the N.B.A. adopted the 3-point shot in 1979, purists cried foul at rules changes, just as many D&D devotees dismissed the rules of the game’s fourth edition as dumbed down, overeager to mimic multiplayer online games like Warcraft — and favoring killing over the role-playing and storytelling roots of Dungeons & Dragons. Some began playing other role-playing games like Pathfinder, which won over disgruntled players. Miniature war games like Warhammer or Wizards of the Coast’s own trading-card game Magic: The Gathering have also diluted Dungeons & Dragons’ dominance.
.... it's like these journalists can see into our very souls !

PvP in PnP

Had a discussion about this the other day about players attacking, either overtly or covertly, other players. Personally I am fine with disagreements between players, but unless it is a special situation (like an evil campaign) I generally am not a fan of allowing players to actually try to kill their fellow party members. It just seems like it would cause to much tension within a gaming group if it isn't handled delicately; there is to much room for to much to wrong to easily. There also seems to be a problem of escalation from other stories I know of in which when it happens it becomes more about getting back at each other and less focus on the campaign. I'm not saying I think it should never be done, but that as a general rule it should be avoided. What do you think?

God help us.

Now, after that melodramatic introduction, here's LoneLictor's beguiling tale of DMing for all you youngsters out there who ever want to be a GM. This story starts out kind of slow and boring, but it gets better. Hopefully you can learn something from my mistakes. My campaign lasted 2.5 years. So, I started out with a single player. I let him have 3 characters cuz he needed a bigger party and then he had some NPCs to help him.

The Campaign is Born
The first three adventures were good. So I decided to bring in two other players. Now, it was obviously unfair that the one guy had 3 characters, but the other characters couldn't have 3 players so we got into an argument. He claimed that he had put a ton of work into all 3 characters, all of which had unique personalities and abilities. All of them were reptilian humanoid bruisers who disliked magic. We pointed this out repeatedly. He did not acknowledge it. Finally, we got him to agree to get rid of one character so he automatically threw away the character sheet that had rolled the worst for his starting abilities.

The Paladin
One of the new players played a Locathan (fish/lobster/man monster) Paladin named Xendo. He was a Paladin in name only. Things he has done; steal from the party, rob graves, kill people for annoying him, kill for the fun of it and kill when bored. I'll delve more into this later, but one adventure ended up being Gort (the other new player, a half-elf fighter who loved his falchion) trying to spring him from prison after the Paladin crashed a funeral with hilarious and then horrifying results.

Will-o-Whisps
During one adventure I had the players go out onto this mysterious island. And they accomplished pretty much everything in the adventure (killed teh big bad and gotz more loot than they could carry but we fudged the rules so that they could because otherwise it would really over-complicate the game and shit) and were going to leave in my boat. Now, one of the players had to leave early, so there was just the guy with 2 characters, Morpheus and Rontorgone, and another player with a half-elf fighter named Gork. I had them see a distant light in the forest cause I was bored.

Morpheus and Rontorgone immediately set out to follow the light and Gork came with them because they made up 66% of the current party. They went out into the woods. I explained that the light kept on moving faster and that the sun was setting and that they didn't know where they were going. Gork suggested that they should run if they wanted to catch up. They did that.

I had an NPC warn them that it might be a Will-o-Whisp and that they didn't know where they were going. Rontorgone and Morpheus yelled at him and kept going. Finally it was sunset. None of the characters had remembered to buy an torches, sunrods or daylight spells. Luckily the NPC had some. He warned them again. They told him to shut up.

I alerted them that they had been following it for 4 hours now and had no clue where they were and they would probably need to stop for rest and food soon. Gork said that they needed to go even faster now. Rontorgone and Morpheus agreed. I had the NPC warn them again and point out that they were lost and should cut their losses. They told him to shut up again.

Finally the Will-o-Whisp stopped because it was in the direct center of the forest and wasn't sure where to go now. So the players caught up and asked what it looked like and what could be holding the light. "It is the light."

"Oh crap, it was a Will-o-Whisp," said Rontorgone and Morpheus.

"What should we do?" asked Gork.

"I warned you guys."

"I stab it!" Gork exclaimed as he slashed at the air and around the table with an imaginary sword. "I stab the Will-o-Whisp with my falchion!"

I flipped through the Monster Manual and saw that Will-o-Whisps were really endurable. It was almost impossible to damage them with non-magic weaponry. And they had no magic weaponry. The falchion went straight through it. So Morpheus shot an arrow at it and Rontorgone slashed at it with his twin rapiers. Nothing happened. And then it was the WIll-o-Whisp's turn. It turns out they have some nice magic. It electrically shocked Gork. Enraged, Gork stabbed it again. Morpheus shot an arrow at it again and Rontorgone slashed at it with his twin rapiers again.

So, here the players were, lost in the middle of a forest in the middle of the night fighting an invincible and malignant foe.

I did what any DM would do. "You know that Dragon you helped in the earlier quest?"

"Kinda."

"What?"

"Yeah, that Dragon. Well, he swoops down and breaths fire on the Will-Whisp and kills it and offers to fly you home."

"Sweet."

New Player
The guy who had two characters recruited a friend into the campaign. He rarely showed up and when he did he never role played, just killed things with his ridiculously over powered Grey Elf Wizard whose name escapes me. He loved fireball, empowered fireball, prismatic ray and shocking hands. That's all I remember. My brain is turning to slush. HDFkdahsf

Cohorts
This is one of my favorite parts of this campaign. Gort got the feat Leadership, which meant he could get a cohort. And he got a pretty high level one. The cohort just tagged along, helping him and stuff. During one adventure, the players had to go on a massive hike through an extremely hot and rancid bog, with all of their supplies. Gort was wearing fullplate and was suffering quite badly. So, here's what he did.

He told his cohort, "Give me a piggy-back ride."

"The cohort is only Level 7 with strength 11, and you're a 160 pound half elf in fullplate armor with a sword, shield and food for the next week."

"So? He's my cohort. He has to do what I say."

"Okay."

After 10 minutes of carrying him, the cohort collapsed from fatigue. I rolled, and he slipped in the murky waters of the swamp and broke his legs against some rock thingy. He was lying in the muck, moaning and clutching his broken legs. Desperate, the cohort begged Gork to help him, as he couldn't walk anymore. Xendo and Gort had burst out laughing. Rontorgone and Morpheus didn't care.

"We leave him behind," said Gort.

"He'll die out here you know. You guys have all the supplies and he can't move his legs."

"We leave him behind," Gort repeated.

Despite this, Gort's leadership score was still high enough so that he could get another cohort, albeit one of a lower level that was a tad less fanatic and loyal to him. So, he got his new cohort. This one died in his first adventure. The players were going through a standard Dungeon crawl and they stumbled onto a Hydra. Due to a series of bad rolls, the Hydra was too powerful for the party to handle. Then, Gort had a genius idea.

"Cohort!" he yelled, having not yet learned his name. "Charge at the Hydra's central head and distract it so we can kill it!"

"Yes, sir!"

After the cohort charged, Gort shouted, "Run while he's distracted!" And that's what they did. Morpheus left last, so he was able to see the cohort being gorily devoured by all 9 nines of the Hydra.

Unfortunately, Gort's score was still high enough for a very pathetic and begrudging cohort. This one lasted about as long as the previous one. While trekking up a mountain, Gort demanded that he carry him, evidently having learned nothing from his first cohort. The minute Gort put all of his weight on the cohort he lost his grip and started tumbling down. Gort succeeded on his reflex save and was able to cling onto a nearby ledge. The cohort failed and fell to his death. Finally Gort's leadership score was too low for anyone to ever like him ever and as a result I didn't have to make the stats for any more goddamn cohorts.

A Series of Betrayals and In-party Fighting
I've noticed a lot of these stories involve traveling. The campaign was a lot about LotR type quests, so a lot of the fighting came from natural hazards, border guards and foes actively hunting you from the beginning. Anyways, at one point the characters were sailing through the ocean on a small boat. So, a guy known as the Captain was the only person who knew how to man the boat and navigate. He kept the maps hidden from the other players so that they were dependent on him and therefore wouldn't kill him. It didn't work. Anyways, the Captain was friends with Rontorgone and Morpheus, who had decided to indulge in some roleplaying and talk to him even if it wasn't plot important or violent.

Gort was impatient and bored with the Captain. So, while sailing on some calm seas, he shouted, "I WANNA BE THE CAPTAIN!" and struck the Captain from behind with his trusty falchion, which was now magically enhanced and quite badass. The Captain swung an axe at him, but obviously couldn't win. All he could do was go out fighting. Gort struck him again.

"No!" shouted Morpheus or Rontorgone (not sure which, maybe both). "We need him! Don't kill him! Gort stop!"

"I WANNA BE THE CAPTAIN!"

So Morpheus shot at Gort with his crossbow while Rontorgone charged him. Now the tide had turned and Gort was screwed. However, Gort had become the favored Champion of Zeus (who was a God in my campaign) and Zeus was known for frequently intervening in mortal affairs. He attacked Rontorgone with lightning, bring him down to half HP. If the Captain hadn't distracted Gort then, Gort could've probably finished him off.

Xendo noticed the fighting and, being a sociopathic gore obsessed nutjob, decided to join in without even knowing what was going on and who was on which side. He attacked Morpheus first, who then attacked him with his crossbow to no effect. He proceeded to attack the Captain, then Gort, then the Captain again. Only due to a series of good rolls was the Captain merely crippled, not dead. Finally Gort comprehended that he couldn't win and surrendered, letting the Captain remain the Captain. Xendo, sensing the fighting had stopped, sheathed his weapon and hid in his quarters until the next fight.

Xendo really should've been a Black Guard. Paladins are supposed to lose all their abilities when they don't act Lawful Good. I kinda messed up there.

OOC Fighting
After a ton of sessions, the person playing Morpheus and Rontorgone was getting bored of the game. He often played videogames/computer, which distracted the rest of the party and meant that no one could play. So one day I found a squirt gun hidden in the back of the room and half jokingly-half seriously said if he hijacked the game again I'd spray him. Of course he hijacked the game by suggesting to the other players that they do something else. So I sprayed him in the chest. And he tackled me.

We wrestled and fought for the gun for several tense moments. When it finally ended we sat back down and resumed the game. This was when the campaign was in clear decline.

Xendo Crashes the Funeral
Xendo heard that the King had died and decided to go to his funeral. It was open casket. And he had all of the royal jewels, his crown and some pimpin' rings on. So, DURING THE FUNERAL AND WITH OVER FORTY PEOPLE AND THE ROYAL GUARD WATCHING he started prying the rings off.

The sobbing Queen smacked him in the face. He said he swung his sword at her to "just knock her away." And he rolled a critical. And max damage. And cut her head off. Essentially, he tried to steal from the dead King and killed the widowed Queen.

The rest of the adventure was Gort trying to spring him from prison before his execution. He succeeded.

I'm sure there are more stories, but I can't remember them now. I feel nostalgic. I should start up another campaign.

Just what the title says.
Requests for Tips and tricks to Warhammer 40k RPGs

Hey gang I've been playing around in the rogue trader universe from time to time and just started up a new adventure with our group. It's a nicely rounded out group with almost every base covered but everytime I've played I have had a few problems playing that i am able to mask while GMing it. These come down to a few things like Mechanics, gameplay and even fluff I am making this to hopefully provide others like myself a thread for advise to get around this as well as get the info i am requesting from others who may have a better grasp of it than me.

1. Guns, I normally find myself amazed at the power any weapon with semi-auto or full auto function guns they seem almost too OP for their own good. I look to weapons like the humble autogun which is suppose to be more or less a solid shot lasgun in the TT version sprays a range of bullets which blood mists huge super mutants. How i calculate damage might be wrong so allow me to clarify when someone rolls a BS test to fire their weapon in semi auto function they need 2 successes for every additional "bullet" to hit the target. So for example someone with a 55 BS rolls a 34 obtained 2 shots from their gun. If the gun did 1d10+3 normally now it's 2d10+6 with an unmodified AP to it. Is this the correct method? What i am running into is sudden spurts of damage that seem inconsistent with my own mental images.

2. Emperors Fury, Maximum damage = new attack keep going if you keep rolling max damage. this I my understanding is it correct? It isn't too often this shows up but when I see weapons with the tearing quality where someone can CHOOSE their damage it seems it happens way too much!

3. Gameplay/Mapping. How do you guys map out a battlefield some of the ranges feel unreal, I am not sure how I would detail a fight at longer ranges I've tried using my wet erase board and saying "every square is 2 m rather than 1 m but then it screws up movement and the mechanics of the game.

4. Fire is too amazing. I find myself looking at flamers and going "well damn.... nothing is avoid this crap!" normally a flamer screws up anything a throw so badly that i find myself creating situations where it might be dangerous to use the flamer. I would like nothing more than to let them go but it is so hard to put yourself out even if you are amazing it just seems like a flamer shouldn't be that amazing but i suppose in 40k TT it does screw up alot of orks...

5. Threats seem weak, I had a group of hullghasts for our first mission along a mining vessel they were suppose to be sneaky scary MFers and instead they couldn't even hurt our Ork player (given this is my own stupidity for allowing an ork) I know I will have other ways to hurt him in the future but i was hoping to give him a small run for his money. I've had many threats be underwhelming in the game and could use some help with what challenges good rogue traders. I either make it crazy like 1 space marine devastator carrying a heavy bolter that compeltely overwhlems them in 1 burst of fire or I have a skulk swinging his knife to no effect

my request is to help me find ways to work around these problems. I am primarily a D&D fan been playing for 12 years and I know how to operate well on it and am able to bring vast amounts of that to Rogue trader but these problems are things preventing me from finding the groove to this system.

Why Players Can Be Annoying Sometimes But You Still Love Them

Well I decided to give our DM a little break from running and give him a chance to play so I told him I was going to come up with an old school dungeon crawl. I wanted it to be about the basic team work and builds, not going balls to the wall character optimization to test the newest broken builds as well as capture a bit of the essence of older editions so I limited everything to the Essentials books, and even disallowed Eladrin and Tieflings. No mixing and matching of 4e and essentials feats to do some crazyness: just nice, streamlined characters. For this reason I also went with inherent bonuses and allowed feats and gear from the Mordenkainen's Magnificent Emporium (it has the rest of the weapon expertise feats, as well as the other armors like studded leather). I set the starting level at 3. Here are the responses to someone volunteering to DM:

I want to be a Blackguard (not a basic Essentials class)
I want to start at level 11
I want to do this using a different system (says the one guy who knows other systems but isn't the one to teach the other players)
I want to use racial feats from other sources

Now the DM is sad becuase he'll never get to play his druid and experience being on the other side of the table. No one wants to DM, but they want to tell you how to. And this is why I hate my players, as well as why we can't have nice things.

Soloing in RPGs

Hi everyone,

I'd like to first state, I'm as green as an Ork's bottom after its first waagh! when it comes to RPGs. I have a friend who's easing me into it with his group using the game Shadowrun. I've also purchased Conan 2nd Edition, Dresden Files RPG: Your Story, and Dark Heresy during a bit of a binge (and plan to pick up the Shadowrun 20th anniversary edition in the near future). However, I tend to do a LOT of things by myself and I enjoy trying to take games made for multiple people and turn into some kind of single player hybrid-type game. However, I fully understand RPGs are basically geared toward groups of people playing together. I received this comment in regards to my wondering aloud at possibly RPGing by myself,
I've yet to find a pen & paper RPG that is compatible with solo play. I think the closest you could get is rolling up a few characters and then writing a story about them.
Is this about right?

Thank you

Polishing a Slaanesh-themed mission for Dark Heresy

Hey Dakkadakka!

Im running a Dark Heresy game based around a group of Ecclesiarchy members of a Firebrand cell. I was recently inspired to make a mission/story arch based on the song "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite." First, for those without proper reference, here is the song, lyrics and background:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCiG7xoEb2Y

http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/being-for-the-benefit-of-mr-kite-lyrics-the-beatles/8086a7a313db3caa48256bc20013f213

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Being_for_the_Benefit_of_Mr._Kite!

The setting would be a primary spaceport, called Bishop's Gate, over a Pleasure world within the Malfi sub-sector. The proprietors of the spaceport would be members of House Henderson, decadent nobles that lavish in the finer things. The overall theme would be that of a Slaaneshi-based influence over the populace, conducted by the talented Mr. Kite. I want to focus on the perfection and excess elements of Slaanesh without resorting to orgies, tentacles and any other over-used themes of this dark god. To what end Mr. Kite would be knowingly corrupted, I have not figured. Maybe his own quest for perfection in his performances has led him to darker paths, or maybe his corruption of House Henderson is completely intentional. A talented performer turned pawn, or a willing and vile cultist of She Who Is Not Named?

Some elements I want to draw from the song would be his performance "without a sound," at which point the players might feel an unnatural influence within the lack of sound, like an unnerving silence, but I can't settle on the effects. Also I have considered, if the nobles were an active evil factor, that I could include a particular drug or vice enjoyed by the populace that is distributed by the Hendersons to corrupt the population (of the spaceport and/or planet). I also want to used "Henry the Horse" as an actual dancing horse who's performance mesmerizes crowds. If called upon to destroy the horse, the players may find that the creature is truly daemonically blessed, intentionally or otherwise. I also want the original contact, maybe a clergyman, to have fallen sway to the performances at Bishop's Gate; innocently considering the show to be an honest display of circus talent. I also cannot decide whether to involve daemons at all in this concept.

I am having trouble though, collating these ideas into a solid mission for the players to properly immerse in. I feel like the performance is appropriate as the climax of the story, but I cannot think of how to get there subtly (without dropping clues heavy-handedly). Maybe the whole thing starts on the Pleasure world and Bishop's Gate is the origin? Obviously if the players are involved it is because no one noticed the witchery previously. This may all seem like rambling, but as players and/or GMs I beseech you to aid me in delivering a fantastic story to my players.

tl;dr Make a Slaanesh-themed DH mission based on "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!" by the Beatles

Setting up a Black Crusade campaign

So I've been tasked with setting up a black crusade game for tomorrow night. I've got two players that are rolling human characters, and suffice to say I'm a bit unsure how to do this. I expect most characters take orders and die, no matter what side they're on. This only changes if they're exceedingly powerful in some form or fashion (Calgar, Eldrad, Abaddon, etc. etc.). So when characters want to start up a game at lvl 1, what do you do? Taking orders works on the tabletop, but in an RPG setting I don't think it would be terribly fun.

So yeah. How do you guys handle games like that?

Fortress America To Be Re-released by FFG

Back in the golden age of Schwarzenegger movies, Milton Bradley released a game called FORTRESS AMERICA.

You're goddamned right Saddam Hussein is on that box art!

But oddly enough, the Middle East did not rank as an enemy in the game. Rather, there were three racial flavors of Commie: White, Latino, and Asian. The plot is that all of these Commies decided to get together and bust into the good ole US of A because our great nation's conventional military forces had weakened. Why would they work together? What do they have against the Land of the Free? Well, um, Commie's are all in this worldwide conspiracy, right, to stamp out freedom, yeah. That's it.

In FFG's take on the game, the Home of the Brave has become an arch-paranoid international bully that pulls the trigger on other countries at the slightest hint that those countries are hiding "the enemy." FFG's USA has some kind of super weapon so the rest of the world (still represented by the White, Latino, and Asian Commies, strangely enough) is on a dire mission to stop the evil American empire once and for all. A lot has changed in 26 years.

Hold on, hold on. That's fucked up. Come on, FFG, fix that shit right away. Americans are the good guys.
Our initial announcement of Fortress America included flavor text that was interpreted by readers (quite justifiably) as politically inflammatory. That text has been since altered to correctly reflect our game's backstory. It was the result of an internal misunderstanding; our marketing department misread certain key thematic elements of the game, and took unauthorized dramatic liberties with the text. We apologize for any offense this may have caused. Again, we would like to stress: the text we posted earlier does not accurately reflect the theme of FFG's Fortress America.
Okay, apology accepted. This time. One more outburst like that, however, and we're sending over the Un-American Activities Investigation Squad.

So, what's the setting going to be like?
In the 21st century, the United States unveiled a military defense system that completely changed global politics. Through a series of satellites and powerful lasers, the U.S. gained a flawless defense against intercontinental missile attacks. Misinterpreting the purpose of this defensive network and fearing that it might be used to launch an attack, the world united to demand that the U.S. dismantle it. A lengthy diplomatic stalemate gripped the globe. With the world at a crossroads, coalitions of nations were formed unlike any that had ever existed before. A plan was devised to destroy this perceived technological threat through military action. It involved attacking from three directions at once, for the nations of the world knew that every army dreads fighting a war on two fronts... and America was about to face three.
Right, so we built Reagan's SDI and the stupid Commies took it the wrong way. Much better.

Anyway, the gameplay pits all the Commies up against the USA on American turf with rules favoring the defender. The 1986 version of this game, which I have never played myself, is by all accounts an absolute bear compared even to all-day sessions of Axis & Allies. Basically, the invading forces had to hold so many territories for such-and-such amount of time or lose. FFG's game looks to be pretty well the same. In fact, they proudly state that the guy who designed this iteration consulted with the original designer. Cool.

Read more here:

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=190&enmi=Fortress%20America

Whatever, yo. I'll likely be buying this one.

League of Super Dungeon Explorers

So I'm a huge nerd. I love the chibi style in Super Dungeon Explore. I love League of Legends. So in my dorkiness, I decided to make a custom Rammus, the Armordillo, for SDE. His mini is being completed by my very talented friend Danny, but here's the card.

I have not playtested any of the rules, so they are very likely unbalanced. Any Characters you'd like to see?

Question on DnD 3.5

So, the only somewhat good forum I could find via Google for an all DnD purpose was the one from Wizards. But, they ask me for some pretty personal information and I just don't do that on a first date.

Which leads me back here. Got two questions for you people on Dakka playing DnD (not necessarily 3.5 I guess):
- What's a good forum form DnD? Similar to Dakka: not official but fan-based and just awesome.
- I'm toying around with building my own campaign (currently I'm a player, but the DM will get bored eventually he said and I'm willing to step in). Now, I have the Deities and Demigods book, which is kool. I'd like to create my own pantheon but there's something that's not quite clear to me. That is: how many Deities do you have to have at a minimum in a polytheistic pantheon? There's this bit where they explain that you have to make sure that every class character has to have the option of having at least the possibility of choosing one deity that has one part of the alignment in common with character and none that is completely opposed. Which leaves me at: wuh?
