I've been thinking about starting a historical wargame for a while, I thought about Napoleonics as my father used play them and still has a lot of his mini's. I also thought about starting flames of war as a guy at my club plays, so would hopefuly be able to get an opponent on a regular basis.

However on reflection the period that interests me most is WW1. I'd like to start a 28mm army and would like some advise from any seasoned campaigners.

Rules, I looking for something reasonably easy to pick up as my spare time/playing is limited and would like to be able to dive in.
I was thinking about buying warhammer historicals - "The Great War" has any one used them? are they any good? are there better rules? if so what are they?

Mini's, like I said i'm looking for 28mm and i'd prefer to avoid metal, renegade seem to do some nice mini's. Does anyone have any opinions on them? is their a better supplier?

Ok so I've been planning a new force and decided on the PDF Manitoba dragoons.

I almost did the guards from hell's highway, (and the support is almost identical) but I didn't for three reasons.

1) I briefly lived in Winnipeg for 4 months so being the only place outside the uk I've lived I have a small affinity

2) having done fearless vets I like the idea of confident trained

3) the idea of converting staghound 3's seems fun!

1st off I cut 30 pieces of fibreboard 8" x 2" to act as bases.

With the Bases I intend to make 3 different types of terrain Tank Traps, Razorwire, minefield. I will do two colour schemes European (east & West) and a few in desert colours for our Africa/Med stuff.

I decided to do tank traps using the Spare resin you get on Forgeworld models. Using a face mask to stop me inhaling the dust, I cut them into approx 1cm pieces using a hacksaw (took about 1hour to do 80+ pieces). I glued them on the base and them Spackled the base (ready-mix polyfiller in UK parlance).

I then sprayed it Army painter Green. Painted the Concrete grey, drybrushed it, painted on some mud paths through them and washed them with devlin mud. Once dried, I carefully flocked the base, leaving the muddy bits showing. I think this looks pretty good.

I will do the same with the desert ones except use Brown primer and a sand flock and dry brush it with VJ Iraqi Sand. Another 11 to do!



So now the Razorwire. Using Paperclips as posts I have embedded them into the base (using a pin-vice) and then Spackled the base. I will follow the paint scheme above.

I then got hold of a cheap roll of 1mm steel wire and took 40cm pieces and tightly wound it around a small 5mm Diameter piece of tubing. This resulted in this.

Intention is to spray the razorwire lightly with black primer (partial covering it) just to take a bit of the shine off. Then I will zig-zag wind it around the paperclip posts, I'm looking at 4-6 lengths on each base giving a very dense amount of wire.

Expensive, but impressive build quality and the Map is beautiful, the stickers cover the wooden pieces (would like to replace these with proper carved wood but this is wishful thinking) but they are sturdy and look nice. Cannot recommend this highly enough and don't worry if you are not some Weeaboo/ anime super freak, it actually is very good as a standalone. I would love to see this as an Eastern Front 1942- 1943 type affair but apparently it is out of print.

Also heard that "Twilight Struggle" is very good, and no it doesn''t involve smacking that stupid EMO vampire Robert Pattinson programme. So I'm brushing off my late war Finnish Sturmi company. give me thoughts on this 1500 points.

Option A

I like the feel of this best...armor, infantry, anti-armor, smoke arty. Little light if I run into "big cats" or thier equiv.


Option 2

Self propelled AA

Jaakari platoon (3 squads)
Pioneeri platoon + truck (cv)
heavy anti-tank platoon (2 50 PstK/38s) (CV)

Not as crazy about this one...has more armor punch with the pioneers, but looses the rifle/mg of the jalkavaki.

Either way, I'll be a painting fool for the next couple weeks.

This leaves 165points, I could upgrade 1 x Platoon upto 3 sections... I could also drop the TIGERS for 3 PANTHERS? This looks okay on paper but I loose the Tiger Aces, and we discussed this a few days ago on the forum.

The Grille H is vulnerable as it is 2 guns? Maybe I should drop this and opt for 3 x JAGDPANZER IV's to support the TIGERS and possible a PANZERSPAH `PUMA` section to stop infantry going for them?

I've just joined today, and am looking forward to contributing to this great forum.

A friend and I are building mid-war armies, but have yet to fight our first battle. But in order to be ready for our first game, I began by building a piece of terrain for our board.

The gate tower is an underscale HO model and seems to fit very well size-wise to FoW figures. There is even room inside for two stands of infantry!
