Suggestions for force to oppose Late War Germans

My son wants to get into Flames of War, so I picked up a PZ IV platoon and a Panzergrenadier platoon to start off. Now I'm looking for something I can use to oppose him. First thoughts were Russians (T-34/85 platoon + infantry) or Americans (either a Sherman platoon + infantry) or even some airborne troops. Thoughts? Most likely, this will be for casual play. Nothing too hardcore.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Sigh. Fat fingered the POST button again. Can a mod please delete this. Thanks.

Finnish T-26 Platoon

Just a quick side project I did over the weekend, since I've had these 4 Zvezda T-26 models sitting on my work table now for 4 months. These are some earlier Finnish T-26 tanks, since they retain the dark Russian green paint and lack the "Ps-" serial numbers on their glacis plates. These are basically stock 1:100 Zvezda T-26Cs with minor modifications. The command tank has a hatch and command figure from the PSC T-34 kit, while the remainder include a mix of PSC T-34 & PzIII fuel cans, stowage boxes made from plasticard, and a plasticard axe and shovel.

4.2" British Mortar is it Break through gun?

I was having a discussion yesterday with a friend and he said he wanted to field 4.2" Mortars with his Commando's because anything over 100mm is a "Breakthrough Gun". I think this isn't right because it's not a Gun but a Mortar tube with a high FP value, not a Bunker buster. Equally that would make 12cm mortars Breakthrough Gun's too. It doesn't seem right and I'm leafing through the V3 book trying to find te definitive statement.

The Great War: WW1 games Advice needed

Hi All

I've been thinking about starting a historical wargame for a while, I thought about Napoleonics as my father used play them and still has a lot of his mini's. I also thought about starting flames of war as a guy at my club plays, so would hopefuly be able to get an opponent on a regular basis.

However on reflection the period that interests me most is WW1. I'd like to start a 28mm army and would like some advise from any seasoned campaigners.

Rules, I looking for something reasonably easy to pick up as my spare time/playing is limited and would like to be able to dive in.
I was thinking about buying warhammer historicals - "The Great War" has any one used them? are they any good? are there better rules? if so what are they?

Mini's, like I said i'm looking for 28mm and i'd prefer to avoid metal, renegade seem to do some nice mini's. Does anyone have any opinions on them? is their a better supplier?

Thanks
Spank

Blitzkrieg Lists

Well, I've finally decided to take the plunge into early war armies as I know someone starting a campaign centered in 1940. As such I think that since I now know how the game works (kind of :P ) I can start an army thats a little more difficult to use than my MW Panzerkompanie. I still want to run an armored list, though I can't decide between running a French or German armored group. As such I've made a couple lists, and wanted thoughts on which of them is the most competitive, as well as alternate army suggestions.

Compagnie de Combat
Company HQ w. 1 Renault Char B1 bis - 185

Battle Tank Platoon w. 3 Renault Char B1 bis - 550
Light Tank Platoon w. 3 Hotchkiss H35/H39 (1 long, 2 short) - 160

Medium Combat Platoon w. 3 Somua S35 - 310
Chasseurs Portes Platoon w. 3 Squads - 175
47mm Anti-Tank Gun Platoon - 120
All Terrain Towed 75mm Artillery Battery w. 4 guns - 290
25mm Anti-Aircraft Defense Platoon w. 2 guns - 45

Total 1835 points

The other list is as below
Czech Panzerkompanie
Company HQ w. 2 Panzer 35(t) - 165

Battle Tank Platoon w. 4 Panzer 35(t) - 335
Battle Tank Platoon w. 4 Panzer 35(t) - 335
Battle Tank Platoon w. 4 Panzer 35(t) - 335

Schutzen Platoon w. 3 squads - 180
Mixed Panzerspah Platoon w. 2 2cm & 2MG - 150
Motorized Light Artillery Battery w. 4 guns - 360

Total 1860 points

Any thoughts anyone can provide on either list is appreciated!

Making 15mm (FOW) Fortification pieces for pioneer supply trucks (updated 9th Feb)

So I decided to make a stack of 15mm terrain pieces for my local gaming club and also hold a few back for me.

1st off I cut 30 pieces of fibreboard 8" x 2" to act as bases.

With the Bases I intend to make 3 different types of terrain Tank Traps, Razorwire, minefield. I will do two colour schemes European (east & West) and a few in desert colours for our Africa/Med stuff.

I decided to do tank traps using the Spare resin you get on Forgeworld models. Using a face mask to stop me inhaling the dust, I cut them into approx 1cm pieces using a hacksaw (took about 1hour to do 80+ pieces). I glued them on the base and them Spackled the base (ready-mix polyfiller in UK parlance).

I then sprayed it Army painter Green. Painted the Concrete grey, drybrushed it, painted on some mud paths through them and washed them with devlin mud. Once dried, I carefully flocked the base, leaving the muddy bits showing. I think this looks pretty good.

I will do the same with the desert ones except use Brown primer and a sand flock and dry brush it with VJ Iraqi Sand. Another 11 to do!

So now the Razorwire. Using Paperclips as posts I have embedded them into the base (using a pin-vice) and then Spackled the base. I will follow the paint scheme above.

I then got hold of a cheap roll of 1mm steel wire and took 40cm pieces and tightly wound it around a small 5mm Diameter piece of tubing. This resulted in this.

Intention is to spray the razorwire lightly with black primer (partial covering it) just to take a bit of the shine off. Then I will zig-zag wind it around the paperclip posts, I'm looking at 4-6 lengths on each base giving a very dense amount of wire.

Just the Mine field to do!

Will post more this week, as I complete the sections.

EDIT - I didn't put this in P&M because no FOW player would ever see it there!

Pacific Front

As a big fan of Steel Panthers and its various versions, I've been looking to expand into Historical Miniatures (mainly cause it looks to be the only decent TT apart from 40k and Fantasy.).

My problem however, is that I am most interested in the Pacific Front, which doesn't appear to be in Flames of War. Is there a decent historical system that does include it? I don't mind if Ships/Aircraft arent really present in it. I'd just like to field an Imperial Japanese Army with some Type-95 Ha-Gos and such.

I'm not really much interested in Eastern Front or the European Front

Sekigahara (Updated with Overview)

Just bought this game and I absolutely love it. The only snag is that it is a two player game. Otherwise it is a superb example of mechanics based Wargaming (leaving the dice behind) as it is driven by cards, strategy and tactics.

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/25021/sekigahara-unification-of-japan

Expensive, but impressive build quality and the Map is beautiful, the stickers cover the wooden pieces (would like to replace these with proper carved wood but this is wishful thinking) but they are sturdy and look nice. Cannot recommend this highly enough and don't worry if you are not some Weeaboo/ anime super freak, it actually is very good as a standalone. I would love to see this as an Eastern Front 1942- 1943 type affair but apparently it is out of print.

Also heard that "Twilight Struggle" is very good, and no it doesn''t involve smacking that stupid EMO vampire Robert Pattinson programme. Though I wish it was..... :waaagh:

German Uniform Colors?

Okay, so I have my infantry primed black and was getting ready to test my colors but after some research, I see so many variations of the uniform colors. I had always thought the uniforms were grey/black color. But, my searchfu has pulled up a green/dark green colored uniforms which may actually be later uniform colors. Also, I have seen green and grey shirts with beige/brown pants. So, what are the right colors and which era do they fall under.

I am making a gepanzerte panzergrendier platoon. And I have the winter (greatcoats) grenadier figures because I had always seen the germans with their heavy coats in grey and black which is aparently their dress uniforms. So, do I just go with the grey/black from what I recall or are they green coats with everything else grey or black?

Upcoming tourney, long absence...advice on list.

So i've finagled a hall pass from the missus to attend the FoW late war tourney at GhengisCon here in Denver.

So I'm brushing off my late war Finnish Sturmi company. give me thoughts on this 1500 points.

Option A

Company HQ
Sturmi platoon
Sturmi platoon
Self propelled AA
4 105 H/33 howitzers (CV)
Jaakari platoon
jalkavaki platoon (CV)
heavy anti-tank platoon (2 50 PstK/38s) (CV)

I like the feel of this best...armor, infantry, anti-armor, smoke arty. Little light if I run into "big cats" or thier equiv.

Option 2

Company HQ
Sturmi platoon
Sturmi platoon
Self propelled AA
4 105 H/33 howitzers (CV)
Jaakari platoon (3 squads)
Pioneeri platoon + truck (cv)
heavy anti-tank platoon (2 50 PstK/38s) (CV)

Not as crazy about this one...has more armor punch with the pioneers, but looses the rifle/mg of the jalkavaki.

Either way, I'll be a painting fool for the next couple weeks.

FOW: Using Grenadiers Platoon as a FJ Platoon?

Okay, just to maximize my purchasing, a Grenadier platoon has 46 figures ($0.50 per figure). A Fallschirmjäger Platoon (Battleworn) has 40 figures ($0.575 per figure). Would I be able to buy a Grenadier Platoon and use them as a Fallschirmjäger Platoon? Or even a Pnzergrenadier Platoon ($0.58 per figure). Has their been any problems in tournaments by doing this?

Lehr 1750 point List.

I'm working on a new list for Lehr and struggling with balancing amounts of Armour and Platoon size... here is my 1st stab.

Lehr Mechanised Company.

HQ
1 x HQ (2 Stands + 2x 251)
COMBAT
1 x Platoon (2 sections + Transports)
1 x Platoon (2 sections + Transports)
1 x Grille H Platoon (2 Guns - Breakthrough Gun!)
WEAPONS
1 x 12cm Mortar (2 sections)
DIV SUPPORT
2 x Tigers (1E's)
3 x Panzerwerfer MAULTIER (With extra crew)
2 x Flak 36's (with extra crew)

This leaves 165points, I could upgrade 1 x Platoon upto 3 sections... I could also drop the TIGERS for 3 PANTHERS? This looks okay on paper but I loose the Tiger Aces, and we discussed this a few days ago on the forum.

The Grille H is vulnerable as it is 2 guns? Maybe I should drop this and opt for 3 x JAGDPANZER IV's to support the TIGERS and possible a PANZERSPAH `PUMA` section to stop infantry going for them?

HQ
1 x HQ (2 Stands + 2x 251)
COMBAT
1 x Platoon (2 sections + Transports)
1 x Platoon (2 sections + Transports)
WEAPONS
1 x 12cm Mortar (2 sections)
DIV SUPPORT
2 x Tigers (1E's)
3 x Panzer IV's
3 x Puma's
4 x Panzerwerfer MAULTIER (With extra crew)

I lack an AA unit, maybe I should trade the Puma's for some Flak 36's?

HQ
1 x HQ (2 Stands + 2x 251)
COMBAT
1 x Platoon (2 sections + Transports)
1 x Platoon (2 sections + Transports)
WEAPONS
1 x 12cm Mortar (2 sections)
DIV SUPPORT
2 x Tigers (1E's)
3 x Panzer IV's
4 x Panzerwerfer MAULTIER (With extra crew)
2 x Flak 36 (With extra crew)

I think this will be the list...

Medieval gate tower

Hi everyone

I've just joined today, and am looking forward to contributing to this great forum.

A friend and I are building mid-war armies, but have yet to fight our first battle. But in order to be ready for our first game, I began by building a piece of terrain for our board.

The gate tower is an underscale HO model and seems to fit very well size-wise to FoW figures. There is even room inside for two stands of infantry!

I've written about the construction of the model on my modelling blog with a lot of images here:
http://oscalemodel.com/model-buildings/flames-of-war-terrain-gate-tower-from-kibri

Cheers
- Occam
