Legion of Everblight Paint scheme ideas

So, I've been collecting and playing legion for almost 1,5 year now. And I have about 250-300 points worth of models.

But, not a lick of paint to be seen except 2 or 3 test models.

I just really can't seem to figure out what I want them to look like (And I'm an arse painter).

So, purely out of interest, what kind of colours would you like to see on a Legion army?

Just remember, I suck at painting, so anything hard will not be happening :P Also, I'm lazy.

Your favorite beast/jack?

Just for funzies, what's your favorite beast or Jack?

For me personally it has to be the Bolt Thrower. People always underestimate them, and I can't remember how many times they've opened up charge lanes, knocked down casters and other stuff that secured me the victory.

A close second is Drago. I just love using him with vladsy.

Privateer Battle Box?

So, my store might be holding a Journey Man paint and grow league. we are allowed to create a battle box, and im using mercs, specifically privateers. The only caster i own is Phinneus Shae, and to me his battle box seemed blazingly obvious, the 3 privateer Jacks, a Freebooter, a mariner and a buccaneer. that comes out to 11 points and is fluffy. To me is seems pretty good, but a person at the store said that that would be "cheap" and totally not in the idea of a battle box because it was too powerful. Do you guys think it is obnoxious to take those 3 jacks and Shae at BB level?

Value on used warmahordes models

I know with warhammer the following prices are practically universally understood regarding the sell of used models...

NIB plastic - 70%
Non damaged metal figs - 70%
Assembled plastic figs - 50% (plastic figs assembled with plastic glue drops that even further)
There's always other minor details that change price like rarity, missing pieces, etc. etc.

Does warmahordes follow the same sort of set up?

Advanced Cygnar Tactics

Hello! I'm in an odd places. I love the ascetic of cygnar storm knights, storm cav and storm striders. I own eStryker, pStryker, and Pnemo (although eStryker is secretly my favorite). I've played quite a few games and I'm not sure where to go with my money. I feel that there is an excellent assault cygnar list I could make that utilizes the crazy dmg of stormguard and stormblades. I just don't know how to build it. I see precursors and I see a good front line, but I need more. How do I get a charge in such an army? Are precursors enough of a tanky front line? (for that matter does deflection effect them?) There is very little speed there. What do you guys think? I know I'll have a storm strider for close support and the plus 2 rat for stormgurad/blades helps too. But what are some ideas?

Thanks guys, any and all suggestions are great.

Warmachine All-Rhulic Mercenaries force - possible?

Hey all, been thinking about getting started in Warmachine and selling some of my Warhammer stuff. The standard 4 Warmachine factions all seem nice, but the look of the Rhulic/Dwarven mercenaries and their 'jacks has be interested in them quite a bit!

Is it possible to make a good list with just Rhulic units? Unless I'm wrong there's only one Rhulic character Solo, (but he looks pretty cool anyway) so that's one limitation there...

Keep in mind I am an untested fledgling and am still pondering this -

Thoughts?

PS - if there are any players in the Southern California area, please chime in!

New to Warmachine, starting Cygnar, lots of newb questions!

Greetings all,

So, after years of looking, and at least one false start, I've decided to start up Cygnar. Part of it is boredom with 40k, part of it is that Warmahordes is played more often at the store, and part of it is that I'm going to be able to trade my unused gaming stuff for some cygnar stuff.

If a trade goes through, I'll have the following:

Battlebox
Heavy
extra Lancer
Sentinel
Gunmages + UA
Longgunners +UA
Stormcasters x3
Field Mechanics
gun Mage solo

Let me tell you what I know (or I think I know), and then I'll launch into questions. I know that PP is more combo oriented, with a decent learning curve. I know that caster choice matters almost more than faction choice for style of play. I know that the Journeyman cast and squire are nearly always used by Cygnar.

What I don't know:

How essential is magnetizing the plastic heavy? It seems nearly always done, but are there really multiple useful variants?

How do you base the models? Does facing matter?

What books do I need to buy to play? What templates or other accessories?

As an experienced wargamer, how many games do I need before I can at least enjoy myself playing in tournaments?

Help with Khador

Ok, I think I've mentioned a couple of times that my friends and I are pretty new to WM. One of us just bought the Khador half of the starter set. He desperately wants to use Karchev (not sure if that's the right guy...the caster who's also a jack), and he's kind of struggling with it. He wants to go jack-heavy. He likes the Spriggan and Kodiak (but is thinking of dropping the Kodiak because it hasn't worked out for him yet...dang undead).

At any rate, what models/units can I use to tempt him away from just trying to build straight out of the tier list?

Side note: does everyone start off just building from their caster's tier? I also keep building tier only lists...

New Player Interested in Khador, Needs Advice

Hello all,

I'm really interested in some of the Khador figures I've seen and would like to maybe give the game a go. I'm mainly interested in the Winterguard models, and was wondering if it was possible to build a decent list out of them, without using any warjacks or some of the other models that don't fit the look of the winterguard. I'm not really a fan of the look of the warjack models or some of the heavily armored Khador models like the men o' war or the assault kommandos, so if possible, I'd like to stick with an army of all winterguard.

Any advice would be appreciated.

What do you think of this Steamroller variant: Interdiction

A copy pasta from my blog:

Steamroller Variant Idea: Interdiction, a Reverse Divide and Conquer
As a tournament format, Divide and Conquer is an interesting idea. You bring multiple lists to an event, but you can only play any one list x number of times during that event. The idea is to encourage the play of a variety of lists. Since character restriction is standard in Steamroller 2012, you should be able to see a variety of lists being played at any divide and conquer event.

DSC02356
Big Events such as Lock and Load feature Divide and Conquer

My idea for a variant tournament style is called Interdiction.

An Interdiction delays or disrupts an enemy. In Star Wars, the Interdictors had this tech that pulled ships flying past them out of hyperspace. In a Steamroller environment, an Interdiction is when your opponent tells you you CAN'T play with a list.

Imagine this. You and your opponent each brings three lists. The lists are character restricted, so each feature a different warcaster/warlock and the lists feature different support characters. You will only see Epic Eiryss in one of three of their lists. They will only see Gormand di Wulfe in only one of your lists.

Menite players will only have the Covenant of Menoth in one of their lists.

Here's where the Interdiction comes in.

Each player denies their opponent from playing one of their lists, leaving them with two lists to choose from to play.

The idea is that the end result creates a scenario where players are trying to build three lists they can play with in a variety of situations rather than just using certain lists to create hard counters that they use when playing specific factions.

I think a necessary restriction is to limit the number of times a list can be denied. So say in a four round event, any one list can only be struck twice.

What do you think? Would you enjoy this style of event?

http://pokeminiatures.blogspot.com/2012/01/steamroller-variant-idea-interdiction.html

Journeyman Alternate Battleboxes

Just something I've been pondering:

For those of you who know about the Journeyman League ruleset, you know it provides battleboxes for factions that don't actually have them.

I'm planning a JLeague in my area, but I want to know if anyone has had any experience with allowing people to create their own Battleboxes. I look at some boxes like the Trolls and the Circle ones, and I can't help but think what PP was doing when they made them (probably getting rid of models no-one uses!).

From what my google-fu has led me to, I think a decent set of restrictions would be a list using any non-epic warcaster, no character jacks/beasts, and up to 11 points (since their are only a few boxes that go above 11 points).

Any thoughts?

Journeyman League - Gators at 15 points

Alright, while I'm not participating in this league, there is a problem that I'm confronted with in advising a few people on. Namely, we've got one player who is running Barnabas, a Wrassler, a Spitter, and a Snapper. And he is basically pushing hard to use Swamp Pit to shut down all of the warjacks for our warmachine players. Swamp Pit + Feat generally means that everyone has at least one or two warjacks shut down and very little way to actually restart them before they get wrecked by his beasts. The best advice I can give is ensure you're running a small unit or a solo or two, take the knockdown, and then use your caster and solo to restart the jacks the turn after his feat knocks everything down. Shooting is right out due to the fact that he's pretty much got everything in a swamp pit all the time.

What's the best way to approach this, as I've had a few players getting frustrated and calling BS on this - obviously the problem goes away at higher point levels, but its good to figure out how to deal with the problem now before it gets too severe and we lose some people. It doesn't have to be a guaranteed win, just a tactic that makes people feel like they have an option to actually accomplish something and might win.

Steamroller 2012

I haven't seen a thread about this on Dakka yet so here we go. The latest steamroller from PP is out and though does have a couple of typos at the moment (apparently being fixed) it looks pretty good to my eyes.

http://privateerpress.com/organized-play/steamroller-tournaments

That said some of the scenarios look a bit complicated so I've been making notes on my printout of the pack. Making sure I can see how to win and how to stop my opponent from winning. If I’ve got anything wrong please point it out.

1. Close Quarters

Two 8” circles, the one on the right is closest to you.

How not to lose:
Contest closest zone

How to win:
Caster in a zone
Control far zone

Other:
KILL BOX

Rough plan:
Hard to damage stuff into the right circle and the hard hitting stuff going on the left.

2. Gauntlet

Two zones, one close to you one on the other side.

How not to lose:
Contest nearest zone

How to win:
Control far zone

Other:
KILL BOX

Rough plan:
Hard to win on scenario in my opinion. Ensure that you’ve got the hard to damage stuff in your zone and press the attack.
Maybe go for the assassination focused list?

3. Overrun

One thin zone that stretches from left to right.

How not to lose:
Contest zone

How to win:
Control zone

Other:
KILL BOX

Rough plan:
Hard to win on scenario in my opinion. Ensure that you’ve got the hard to damage stuff in your zone and press the attack.
Maybe go for the assassination focused list?

4. Guidons

Each player has a zone on the right and an objective on the left.

How not to lose:
Contest enemy objective
Protect own

How to win:
Control/destroy enemy objective
Move own objective to near zone

Other:
Caster has to move objective.
Gives fearless when controlled

Rough plan:
Something to threaten the enemies objective/caster (Fast? Cavalry?)
Also need to protect own objective/caster (shield guard? Tarpit?)

5. Supply and Demand

Offset circles, each containing an objective.

How not to lose:
Protect own objective
Contest enemy objective

How to win:
Control far zone and destroy enemy objective
Control near objective and contest far zone

Other:
Free charges and objective heals itself

Rough plan:
Something fast to contest the enemy objective is definitely needed for this one. Then you can concentrate upon controlling your own objective/zone, in that order.

6. Destruction

Objectives are placed on each players right, when destroyed it moves to the left hand spot.

How not to lose:
Protect nearest objective

How to win
Destroy far objectives

Other:
Extra armour: power tokens

Rough plan:
Hard to win without long range shooting or fast moving melee guys (cavalry?)
Maybe go for the assassination focused list?

7. Incursion

Three flags along the centre line and at the end of the first turn one disappears

How not to lose:
Contest flags

How to win:
Control flags

Rough plan:
Easy to describe what to do. Getting it done is the hard bit. So much depends on your force, enemy force and which flag disappears. Take a flexible list.

8. Process of Elimination

Two zones side by side.

How not to lose:
Contest ONE zone

How to win:
Control one zone then the other

Rough plan:
Ensure that it’s very hard to remove you from one zone and if you have a way of pushing things then you can try for the scenario win, else go for the assassination.

9. Outflank, Outfight, Outlast

Two side by side circles as before. This one has something extra, reinforcements.

How not to lose:
Contest zones

How to win:
Control zones

Rough plan:
Depends on what your reinforcements are but you could go heavily for the left hand zone and rely on the extras. If you can clear the zones do it else go for the assassination.

10. A Flag Too Far

First of the flank scenarios. The four flags look very completed but it’s easy to ensure you don’t lose and hard to win.

How not to lose:
Contest centre left flag

How to win:
Control centre right flag and go for far flag

Rough plan:
Tarpit up the centre right flag and attack down the right flank, using the reinforcements to ensure you wreak the opponent. Else assassination is the way to win.

11. Bunkers

Flank deployment with two circles.

How not to lose:
Contest left zone

How to win:
Control right zone

Rough plan:
Like a flag too far you should tarpit the left flank and attack up the right.

12. Envelopment

Flank deployment. Two zones, one further away on the left, the other closer on the right.

How not to lose:
Contest near zone

How to win:
Control far zone

Rough plan:
It’s gonna be a hard one to win as anything you get into the far zone to control it will be hit by the reinforcements. Might be best to hold them back slightly so that if your opponent gets their heavier stuff in their zone you can get rid of it quickly. Else assassination is going to be the way to win.

13. Demolition

One objective in the centre with two offset circles.

How not to lose:
Contest near zone
Contest objective

How to win:
Control objective
Control far zone

Other:
Objective gives AOE’s

Rough plan:
Watch out for the AOE that can come from the objective. To stop this from happening ensure that you are always contesting the objective and the closest zone. Attack up the left flank and stop the enemy on your right.

14. Incoming

Two zones, one close on the left flank and one far on the right. Two objectives in the opposite place.

How not to lose:
Protect near objective and contest near zone
Contest far objective

How to win:
Destroy far objective and control far zone
Control near objective

Other:
Artillery AOE’s (rough terrain)

Rough plan:
Ensure that you can threaten the objective/caster. Protect your objective somehow whilst attacking up the left flank. Also watch out for the 3” AOE of rough terrain that can come from the objectives. It’ll only be dangerous to things around the zone but without pathfinder it could screwup your plans.

15. Restoration

One rectangular zone in the centre of the table with an objective on each side.

How not to lose:
Protect near objective
Contest zone

How to win:
Destroy far objective
Control zone

Other:
Removes damage and continuous effects.

Rough plan:
Protect the closest objective and go for the attack up the centre. Ensure that you are always contesting the zone. It is going to be hard to win but easy to lose I think.

16. Command and Control

Radial scenario with one centre circle zone and four flags on the points of the compass.

How not to lose:
Contest zone

How to win:
Control zone and caster contest a flag

Rough plan:
Always contest the zone and have a manoeuvrable caster so that if you can clear the zone and get to a flag you can get ahead on control points.

17. Diversion

Radial scenario. Two flags on the left and right and two circles just in front of the deployment zones.

How not to lose:
Contest left flag

How to win:
Control right flag
Contest far zone

Rough plan:
Tarpit up the left flank, attack on the right and get the fast stuff up the centre. But always be flexible.

18. Sacrifice

Radial scenario. One circle to the left of player one and a flag to the right.

How not to lose:
Contest zone

How to win:
Control zone and base-to-base flag

Rough plan:
Your gonna have to attack the circle heavily whilst having something fast to get into base to base with the flag. Other than that watch out for the assassination vectors.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh and Norbert put up a description of the changes from 2011 to 2012 on lost hemisphere here

Legion squishy?

Hey guys so I've been looking over the Legion armybook and I expected to see what i've been told about them. That they are a glass cannon. Please help me see how that can possibly be, at least for their warbeasts, as warbeast heavy seems to be a common tactic for Legion.

I can see they do more damage in assault than most other hordes armies along with fire sprays on their beasts. But they also sport decent defense, and just as high Arm as any other race. Combined with the spiny growth and try to tell me that Legion is a glass cannon. Even the amount of wounds of their warbeasts are no less than any other faction.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

So, any thoughts on who will be the next epic merc?

Title kind of says it all. This is purely speculation, just to kind of think about who, if any of them will get an epic incarnation. Personally, I want Shae to get it, because i think he has a LOT of character. But, if i had to guess, i would put my money on it being Ashlyn. She is probably the closest to the canon story of the game, events in Llael are still simmering, and with the siege of the resistance in Wrath, i feel like she has real potential to have her story advanced and to have her become an Epic, any thoughts?

Is hordes really on the same playing field as warmachine

I am by no means an expert on the the whole hordes and warmachine rules set, but I have been playing with hordes army for about a half year, I don't care for warmachine and the whole steam punk thing, but I understand that they can be played as one together. Most of my friends play warmachine and not hordes. My thing is, hordes seems too have the upper hand over warmachine. Yes, warcasters can hold focus too boost there armor, that's great but I'd rather transfer damage then hold focus to pump my armor up, people also say jacks are much tougher then warbeasts, I disagree, every time I have a warbeast going toe to toe with a war jack the war beast almost always comes out as the winner, I can even heal 1 damage box on a warbeast in a boxed out spiral and its back too fighting as if nothing happen, my fellow warmachine contestants can only heal damage unless they buy a mechanic. But the real nail too the head is the whole damage transfer, Warlocks can do it, and this is pretty powerful, it has won me many games before being able too transfer damage too a warbeast. How is this rule real fair with fellow warmachine players. I know warcasters also normally have more spells then warlocks but it's not even noticeable some spells may only effect jacks at times or are not really game changing. Maybe, just maybe when privateer press created the whole damage transfer they went a little overboard with hordes. Is it me or am I missing something?

Warmahordes intro problem.

Now, I'll set the scene. Myself and a few other of the Warmahordes players up at my club for the last month or so have been demoing the game up there with the various Battlegroups we have at our disposal and many people were all interested and very gung-ho about getting into the game, but we've hit a snag. No-one appears to be willing to buy ANYTHING..

I'm a bit in over my head here as we are lacking a Press Ganger round the Lincolnshire area (correct me if I'm wrong) and I'm sure the problem has arisen with one of them. The guys who are playing it week in week out with our models appear to have developed the attitude of "fuck it, Grimtuff and the guys will bring the models, we'll just keep using them indefinitely". Obviously I only noticed this earlier tonight when I brought up the idea of doing a Journeyman League starting in Feb/March time but on a fortnightly/monthly basis instead of week to week. The moment I told them they would have to buy their own models for it a lot of them backed off, making excuses such as "oh I've got this 40k army to finish" or "I can't afford it". It's £30-£35 FFS! :soapbox:

Now, the problem was somewhat exacerbated after seeing the JML rules and found the game progresses well beyond the battleboxes, which is another thing some of them cannot wrap their head round as it eventually involves spending yet more cash. See they're prepared to play be not prepared to take the full plunge into this game despite being disillusioned about GW and wanting something different.

How have people handled this situation if it has come up with them, as I am frankly somewhat annoyed and stumped

Thanks in advance.

Help with Legion of Everblight Newbie!!

Hey Guys! Jumping into Hordes for the first time, Settling on Legion of Everblight. :D

Now I'm finding it hard to get any solid information on the materials the miniatures are made of. I've read some forum posts that say some kits are resin but from what I've seen in painting progress shots (this is where I've had to go to get any sort of Idea what things are made of lol) everything seems to be metal (including bases?).

So if someone could answer these questions or direct me to the info that would be fantastic !!! ;)

1. These miniatures are larger scale than most from what I can see, If they are all metal how much pinning am I going to need to be doing to hold them together? I'd hate for them to turn up at my house later this week and be unable to assemble because I have nothing to pin them with. Do they even require assemble or a single piece? What do you guys recommend?

2. Now the site I bought the kit on claimed it contained everything I needed to start playing Legion of Everblight, does this include any sort of rulebook/codex type material? or should I be ordering something else as well? The PP Website mentions 6 Models in one section but the other says "This box contains a full warpack ready to be assembled, painted, and sent to war! Grab a handful of dice and a ruler and you'll have everything you need to begin your HORDES battles.
"

3. Do I need a Hordes Rulebook as well as army specific rules. Eg Warhammer has the big rulesbook and a codex for each army. Their site has a printable rules claiming "Quick Start Rules
Everything you need to begin playing HORDES can be found in the Quick Start Rules."

4. I have a mate who is casually into Warmachine who mentioned something about the two games ability to play each other, despite one been fantasy based the other scifi? How does this work? Do I need another rule book for this?

Anyone with some time to answer any questions would be awesome!! Sorry I know so little, I don't have any Local Game Stores around me so kinda relying on the internet to find out what I need to know and I'm struggling at the moment as you may notice lol.

Can't Decide Between Circle and Minions

My friend is getting into Warmahordes, and with that we plan to seduce many of my college buddies. I already play Protectorate but want to play a hordes faction just for options of gameplay. I've narrowed it down to two factions, being Circle and Minions.

In the Circle Orboros I really like a Baldur style list with lots of Constructs. I am totally down with the whole earth style theme going here, as opposed to the other aspects of the Circle casters. My only concern here is the mediocre statline on many of the warbeasts.

As to the Minions, I love the Farrow's rules and models. They seem like a solid army but they have so few models available. In higher point games I wouldn't be able to diversify that much, as there is only about ten total choices total.

Recall playing experience and convince me to play one of the respective factions, I'm eager to try the Fury mechanic but I require assistance in choosing from the vets of these armies.

Newbies join the fun

A lot of my gaming group arent playing 40k anymore so a few moved to Warmachine/Hordes and we've played a few games to date.

Really liking it so far, its sort of like Necromunda crossed with MtG we feel. Some very very fun games to date.

However there are literally 4 rulebooks going around the group and tbh no one has taken a really firm handle on being a GM/rules lawyer so can I ask some basic newbie questions here?

If a Jack has a fully damaged cortex and is in combat it gets free hits against it? Is that right?
Can the enemy engaged with it move away freely?

Can you move away freely from any combat or do you have to stay locked in until the end?

When fleeing is it like 40k where you keep moving backwards until off the table? Can you do anything whilst fleeing?

Is it correct that everything in the game gets one move and one action?
If one runs you cannot perform an action?
Does charging = your move + action allowance? If you charge into combat can you then do a special attack? if not, can you do normal attacks with your weapons - say you have 2 weapons that would be 3 attacks total?

Are charges always in a straight line? We had a situation where a trolls big base was half behind impassable terrain and half not. He claimed he could charge through the terrain.

Can individual squad members do different things? For example, could half the unit shoot and then half charge (assuming they stay in command radius)?

What can a Jack do without spending any focus points? Anything at all?

Spells can be cast anytime except during a movement?

Sorry if they sound ultra newbish, we're just trying to get the basics right so we can move things forward, thanks.

Wolds, usable?

I'm considering starting Hordes and I've been looking a little at Circle Orboros - however, that depends on if the various animated warbeasts are useful. Are they (Woldwarden, Wold Wyrd, Megalith, etc)? They are the main thing I like with that faction, the beasts (warpwolf and the like), not so much. So, would it be possible to build a usable circle battlegroup, with animated stones and trees as main theme?

Taking the plunge!

Many, many moons ago, I was a huge fan of a comic book call Battlechasers. Especially of a gentle giant character called Calibretto. Huge, hulking, arcane powered steampunk robot (War Golem). The series ended before it really began in my eyes, and became a happy memory.

Imagine my surprise at stumbling across a model of Calibretto. Upon further exploration, it was not my favourite gardening weapon of war, but something of a similar style. A war-gaming miniature no less! Warmachine was the name of the game and it was oh so very tempting. But there was no FLGS aside from the local Games Workshop, so without any chance of playing the game, I let it slip from my mind.

Fast forward. Get married. Move to a bigger town. One with a FLGS. My wife goes there to play Magic the Gathering from time to time. I am also starting to get a bit jaded by the whole Games Workshop experience and so fancy a change. So my wife mentions that the FLGS has a thriving Warmachine & Hordes group...and those Calibretto styled models are available in a plastic starter set. Time for a change methinks.

So, bought the Prime MKII rulebook. Got my beady little eye on the Cygnar starter set. Started talking to a few of the regular gamers at the FLGS...gearing up to have a trial game or two in a few days. Who knows where this will lead. Either way, I should have a few cool new minis to add to my collection. Stoke the fires, check the boilers. Time to let off some steam. >:E
