Space Marines and Immortality.

Can Space Marines die of old age?

Because I can't think of a single canonical example. The Blood Angels are reputed to live longer than other Space Marines, but I've never heard of a Space Marine that didn't die as a consequence of battle. So... are Space Marines (not counting Dreadnought-interred Marines) actually immortal in their life-span but simply never get to live for thousands of years because they're always in battlefields? Because that's a pretty solid method to die before your time.

I may be missing something obvious here, and I'm sure if that's the case someone will tell me in two sentences, but I dunno.

Any thoughts?

Thousand Sons during the heresy

Hi all,

I've been out of the hobby for about 6 moths now but have decdided to get back into it now. I've decided the best way for me to do so is to start fresh and so I'm clearing out and selling a load of stuff so that I can fund my new army.

I really like the pre-heresy Thousand Sons, however I also like daemons a lot. So, I was thinking of doing a Thousand Sons army during the heresy so that I could have the cool pre-heresy marines fighting alongside the daemons.

I should point out here: I don't care about rules in the actual game at the moment, or what should count as what, or what codex to use as I'm not gonna actually be playing for a long time yet. I'm just wondering whether there would be any major problems with this fluff-wise?

Also, as this army is just to look good at the moment I'm concentrating on larger daemons so if you have any ideas for cool conversions or any daemons or characters from books that could fit in this army; feel free to tell me about them.

Thanks.

Battleships in Orbit

So obviously, if you have a battleship parked in low orbit, you're not in an ideal situation. The guns can blast cities to rubble and whatnot.

What sort of secondary effects would that be likely to have? Would five kilometers of metal entering low orbit interfere with weather patterns? What about the heat from engines, to give enough thrust to move the thing? Would bombardment raise the surface temperature enough to be noticed? Would there be a 'nuclear winter' effect from blasting enough of the dirt into the sky during a bombardment?

I know 40K runs on loose science at the best of times, but I'm just interested to think about that sort of thing from a fluff/RPG context.

Balance Theory

Lots of people ask, "If the Imperium is so doomed by all of the other races, how is it still alive? Obviously those other guys are being exaggerated and in reality the Imperium is super ultra powerful and invincible." Here's my explanation for that question.

THE BIG FOUR (Tyranids, Traitor Legions, Necrons and Orks) BALANCE EACH OTHER OUT!

Here's how it works. Necrons have no biomatter, so they defeat Tyranids. Traitor Legions have Chaos, so they defeat Necrons. Tyranids eat biomatter, so they defeat Traitor Legions. Orks defeat everything, so they also defeat themselves. The big four keep eachother balanced and thus prevent any one of them from just wiping out the Imperium with a derisive assault. That's how the Imperium (and the Tau and Eldar) have managed to survive for so long.

So, what do you guys think? Do you agree with this theory? Do you disagree? Will this turn into another Tau Hater/Fanboy war?

Celibacy in the Imperium?

Obviously in a game that's aimed 12-year old British boys GW wants to stay as far from the subject of S-E-X as possible. They day their customers discover girls is the day they find better things for their time and money.

But here at Dakka we tend to have a more mature group who are more familiar with the real world and with GW's made up fluff. So i wonder what the Imperium's attitude on sex is.

In the many (MANY!) Black Library books I've read I can only think of a few legitimate relationships. Inquisitor Eisenhorn had a girlfriend on the side but seemed to need to keep it under wraps. And in Gaunts Ghosts we had Tona and Caffran. In Titanicus there was a married couple with the wife in the PDF. Other than that... I mean I haven't read every book and I may have forgotten some but that's all that comes to mind. And funnily enough they're all by Dan Abnett.

Ian Watson's Inquisition Wars had a fairly odd relationship between the Inquisitor Draco and the assassin M'Lindi but it's pretty clear that was illicit.

Obviously a lot of the Imperium is based on the Roman Empire and the Medieval Catholic Church which makes for an odd combination of sexual mores. I would imagine official commands of celibacy that are routinely ignored at the top and bottom levels.

So no one cares too much what the underhivers, laborers and guardsmen are up to. They have their joy girls (& joy boys) and liaisons and of course marriages and provide much of the population growth of the Imperium.

And at the top you have your political marriages and concubines and have people who basically beyond and laws or social morals.

But for the guys in the middle, there you have the true believers and the people afraid to break the rules. So Arbites, adepts, commissars, interrogators and other mid-level Imperial types are probably expected to be celibate.

SoBs are probably meant to be celibate since they're based in part on Catholic nuns. Of course they're also based on Dune's Bene Gesserit, witch-harlots who are assigned to mate with certain lords as part of a millennium-long genetics project. They also have roots in Dune's God Emperor's Fish Speakers, female warriors whose service only ended when they had a child.

Imperial Priests are again based on Catholic ones and probably celibate with decadence and corruption on the top. Though protestant priests, Moslem Imams and some buddhist monks can marry so there's that...

And of course it is well established that Space Marines are not interested in wimmins. Now with so many energetic young scouts around...

Drop pods Back ground and painting.

As far as i know the drop pods used in an assault aren't taken with the space marines after the battle. Either they take the planet or die trying. In both cases the drop pod isn't taken back to the ship. My question is, Why weather the out side of a drop pod? They drop the doors fly off of them, and are left to rust.

I get the point behind weathering tanks but why drop pods?

And for those of you who wonder why this post is here, Its because it as everything to do with the back ground story about Space marines leaving certain gear behind like America does in war zones.

Number of weapons, and weapons choices on SM/CSM

Hi there! I'd like to hear your opinions in these issues:

I was thinking about an IW character to create when I found a complicated thing. As in 'The Flight of The Einsenstein', seems a marine (loyalist or not) can wield BOTH a power fist and a chainsword, or put the sword on the belt and fire a boltgun, two-handed. For example, having the power fist on the left hand and let the right hand free for a trigger or another CC weapon. The thing is, would he feel comfortable with all that wargear in a power armor (not terminator armor)? And also, how would he figh in CC with such a weapons combination? My character would be using a grenade launcher, probably. How do you se this?

Another thing I'd like to hear your thoughts about is that if a marine in power armor could use a chainfist. If the fist is meant for punching and grabbing, it would be probably difficult to do with a chain blade attached to it, and you'll perhaps damage it when punching (same if you had a TL boltgun attached to it as Abbadon or Zhufor). I thought about a blade that could be retracted on the fist's dorso... seems a bit big for a power armor!

Tell me what you think about this!

Tyranids going to attack Terra?

I have been asked this question by friends because I play Nids and now it's puzzling me. In the Codex it states that the astronomic on draws the Great Devourer to Terra because of its psychic energy given off by the Emperor on the Golden Throne. And in every Codex it shows a galactic map and where that race is and where they move to and this is where I get lost. It shows that Hive fleet Leviathan is not on the galactic plane but that it fact comes out of "null" space and moves up into the plane where it then would "enter the grid". If leviathan is able to do this why not hit Terra? Technically all the races could bypass planet hopping and just go under the galactic plane in null space but they would run the risk of encountering Levithan. I find this flaw disturbing because if they had thought of this then why wouldnt the Inquisition just go into null space then use warp space travel to an enemy home planet and just Exterminatus it? For one there would be more space battles and it would probably shut Warhammer 40,000 down because it would end very very fast. But really Levithan grow a pair get some other fleets and let's go have a nom nom party on Terra!!!

I've found some information relating to the other classes of Knight, but the Warden remains a mystery to me.
I'd like to have a go at converting some Knights up, and there's a fairly cool rendition of the Warden here: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xk34z6urTZY/TZs-XfeyuBI/AAAAAAAABSo/ElPLLOTSS0I/s1600/front02.jpg
They used to look something like this: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vFUbRcVxuqM/TXuYgHuDDfI/AAAAAAAABRo/7LmFnxptIPA/knightwarden.jpg

Any help you can give would be much appreciated :)

Question about souls

From fluff we know that souls and Warp have very tight connection. I am more interested before 4 Chaos Gods came where did the Human and Eldar souls go?
And what about Ork souls? Do they exist in a Warp as Gork and Mork?
Most importantly, do Chaos Gods lay claim to EVERY soul that enters the Warp after death or they also must battle to claim them?

Horus Hersey Reviews - Deliverance Lost / Know No Fear

Introductions for two reviews I just polished off. I will full text them below so as not to be uncouth, but please feel free to click through to the links as well if you enjoy them.

______________________________________

Well, it's been a while since I've reviewed a book, but here we go. Deliverance Lost by Gav Thorpe, the lastest (if you dont count No Know Fear) entry to the Horus Heresy saga. I have to say, I was left pretty cold by this one. I really wanted to like it, but there was plenty that prevented joy from happening. Here's the gist:

Deliverance Lost Review

Would love to get some commentary from those of you that have read it also. Am I simply off base and expecting too much, or did ya'll have the same sense of emptiness reading it I did?

________________________________________

So here's the review for No Know Fear. It's true that its a bit more gushy than I wanted it to be. It's true that I should probably just write Dan Abnett a Valentines Day card now, expressing my undying love for his writing. Whatever.

I read this one in a matter of two days. It would have been less, but I had to work and sleep. It was that compelling. I couldn't put it down.

Know No Fear - Dan Abnett Review

As I intimate in the review, I don't think it's quite as good as Prospero Burns, but damned if it isn't close. They're very different books, so it's hard to look at them comparatively. Suffice it to say I loved Know No Fear.

Please, comments & critiques & rambling thoughts welcome.

Cheers.

What would a SW with the Mark of the Wulfen look like?

I have always thought of them as something similar to the Lycans in Underworld but a tad more human and alot more bulky. Today however, I went to see the new Underworld at the movies and there is one MASSIVE Lycan in it and the first thing that sprung into my mind was "FETHING HELL that is exactly what I would imagine a SW with the mark of the wulfen to look like!". For those of you who havnt seen it or seen underworld (what the hell are you doing with your life? Go watch it, now! What are you waiting for? Stop reading and go watch it. Seriously.) it is kinda hard to explain but they fit my idea of the wulfen almost perfectly and the giant muscular behemoth in the new movie look just like I have always imagined them, only with power armour ofcourse.

What do you guys think?

What do you guys use as a mental reference when picturing a Wulfen brother?

Are guardsmen paid?

I was wondering about the benefits (if there are any) of being a guardsman.

Do soldiers in the IG receive a salary (like modern-day forces)? If yes, how is it organised?

After all, they keep being shipped out to other planets and other war-fronts. That means different economies and different currencies. So I doubt they get a monetary payment, or maybe they are paid using the currency of the planet where they currently fight or are stationed.

But then, are they paid in nature? Are they paid with precious metals, like gold (which probably have some value anywhere in the galaxy)? Are they paid with other objects, like extra food rations or smokes? Or is their "salary" simply sent to their family back on their home planet as a compensation for the loss of their boy?

Or are they simply not paid at all? By the way, that would make them slaves. A rather disturbing thought...

Any thoughts or answers?

The Badab War

Before getting started, if you haven't read the Badab War, this has vague spoilers.

So, I can't tell, when did Huron fall to chaos, and when did the rest of the Astral Claws?

-There are a number of various 3rd party attacks around negotiations- I couldn't tell if these were supposed to be mercenaries/allied chaos powers working with Huron, or said powers conspiring against Huron, setting him up for the fall and turning to them.

-The Astral Claws were sure doing some shady business (esp. regarding apothecaries), but I didn't get any sense that they were actually worshipping chaos. Similarly, the way they react to the Executioners rejecting them seems to imply that they still considered themselves mostly loyal, up until that point.

-It seems like, if they were worshipping chaos, it would hav been during the final assault on Badab that they would have played their hand, i.e. summoned a bunch of demons, etc.

…So, my thought is that there wasn't any chaos taint before the Astral Claws escape, but what do you think?

How underhanded could the Tau be?

Hey gang, I am messing around with an idea for a Deathwatch campaign and was hoping i could get a thumbs up or down from the Tau Empire. Going off the idea the Tau empire is more grimdark than first appeared and knowing how they are constantly expanding with an uncompromising philosophy of the Greater Good to what extend could this be tested since the Empire could control the information flow.... Alright here is my idea

Raldae Prime, a Imperial civilized world near the fringes of what is being claimed as Tau space has always been under siege by orks (referenced by the War of Dakka) Due to being so far out the Planetary Govenor has often requested more resources from the Imperium than they consider "necessary to maintain a proper defense". Often provided only a small allotment of Imperial Guard and PDF troops to face roving Waaghs flooding into the Tau Empire, as a result some political members of Raldae Prime and a majority of the people in secret wish for secession from the IOM as they are an advantageous planet for the Tau to regain a strong foothold against the Orks by bringing the fight into a new direction breaking supply lines and more or less removing the Orkish foot on their throat by bringing the battle closer to " Imperial Space". Since Raldae Prime is willing to co-operate if provided protection against the Imperium's retribution and they were willing to go to war to obtain more territory for the Tau Empire I imagine they would willingly accept the protection.

however just cause majority of people and some of the goverment wants to Seceded from the IOM because they are risking their lives the heart of the planet has remained properly Imperial and Raldae doesn't find itself in a true desperation of needed assistance, yet. Due to Tau recon and desires to obtain Raldae the ethereal cast would be provided information of latent pysker activity being much higher than most Imperial worlds of the past. Having recently witnessed a mysterious "vanishing" of a small xeno race of minor pyskers the tau had previously considered inducting into the Empire for military purposes not far from Raldae Prime's area, their initial investigations sent back worrying information. Discovering the remains of a few Enslavers and the entire world dying from various chaotic means the Etheral cast knew how to make the Imperials come to their side while also removing them in the long run to prevent treachery.

Biding time, and drawing orks to the planet in higher numbers using their stealth technology and running proper recon missions the tau redirected a larger portion of Orks to Raldae Prime enough to off set the PDF and IG protecting the planet as soon as this happened the Tau offered an Alliance. The alliance was readily accepted as even Astartes response would be too long before the planet would get overrun as it didn't have the means to stop them, The Tau agreed to the terms other than asking them to "throw off the shackles of their oppression as they possess a high number of pyskers and would like them no longer to be oppressed or offered to the proper organization they would instead be "educated" by the tau Empire in registered facilities. within only a few weeks the Imperium arrives to find the orks and tau upon the planet surface and when attempting to assist the Tau and Raldae shoot down most imperial support until it get spun into the unwinding chaos of Raldae. Not long after the Imperium declares the planet heretical the Tau's desired conditions arrived...

No longer properly being protected by the psyker academies or persecuted for what they were they were freely and oftenly using psychic powers to defend themselves from attack or simply in public, a few members of use were given offers to leave Raldae and join the Tau empire as Sha'vel? (not even sure that is the right term) Treating them as proper pyskers which needed restraint, however the vast majority proved too tantilizing for The Enslavers to not take advantage of... within a few weeks the planet was over-run and the planet grew silent. After a proper assessment was sent to an Inquisitor of secession, killed Adeptus Astartes, PDF and Imperial guard along with an ork incursion stopped mysteriously without additional military assistance other than the tau... The Ordo Xenos requested the Assistance of the Death Watch

Suspecting Tau treachery turning Raldae Prime against the IOM they want a proper investigation of the situation there before declaring Exterminatus on the planet. That is where my group will come in to face Enslavers, their puppets, hold-out orkish forces and a Tau covert recon force trying to kill the Death Watch Kill-team before any evidence of their true involvments come to light thus the planet will be left for them to claim for the military advantage against the orks and an expanded territory.

What do you think? I know it'a a bit convoluted but it feels like what they would do and it gives the group a chance to really learn more about tau for their first adventure. It set up future adventures to go against the tau seeking retribution for Raldae Prime.

Inquisition discussion.

I wanted to discuss something, it may be in fact the future of the Inquisition instead.
Lynata mentioned in "inquisition orders" topic that Grey Knight codex said that "Grey Knights act as a chamber militant for entire Inquisition". ( page 7 of the Grey Knight codex ).
Same is in new SoB White Dwarf update, there is no mention of Inquisition at all ( but they are represented as "army of the Ecclisiarchy", page 1 of White Dwarf update, and when they are not is service of Imperial Church they train or worship ).

Does that mean that they are rewriting the Inquisition? SoB became their own army, and Grey Knights are represented as the militant arm of the Inquisition ( there is no mention of Ordo Melleus, so they probably mean the whole organization ).

Does that mean that they are reorganizing the Inquisition, and how will that effect the remaining third party: the Deathwatch?
Why are they doing this? I see nothing wrong with Daemonhunters, Xenohunters and Witchhunters.

Ecclesiarchial Marines?

Hey guys,

I know the Ecclesiarchy can't bear men under arms, but just as there are chapters with 'close' relations to the AdMech and whatnot, surely there must be some who are bros with the Ministorum?

Chaplains in most chapters may be of the opinion that the Ecclesiarchy is sort of wrong (The Emprah is a highly evolved man according to Spehss Mehrens, not a God) but is this really a standardised doctrine?

I think I read somewhere that new Chapters have their Chaplains instructed by existing Chapters' Chaplains, but is it really not feasible that a chapter could fall through the cracks or develop deviant beliefs? It's not like SM enforce their creed to the same extent as the Imperial Cult.

I guess GW just intended Marines to be a 'secular' influence. They sat out during the Age of Apostasy, for e.g. But meh, it'd be cool to have one or two chapters who like to help out the Ministorum from time to time. Modelling them on BTs would probably be rather fun. And if the only regulating influence is that Chaplains receive instruction when a Chapter is first made to preach a certain thing, well, that's not the strongest regulatory effort in existence...

GKs waste Librarians?

So I don't remember it that well, but somewhere in the new Codex it talks about doorways down inside Titan of which there are a reasonable few, on the way to some chamber or something.

Each doorway is guarded by a Librarian?

Are these old and infirm Librarians or perfectly good ones who could be on the frontline?

The thought that something like five Librarians are just chilling in Titan doing nothing other than guarding a doorway seems like a tremendous waste of a Librarian, and a *GK* Librarian at that.

Have I got this wrong?

How far does the Imperium respect the Eldar?

As far as we know, the Imperium and the Eldar have a grudging respect for another. Reasons include, but are not limited to: 1) What is good for Mankind is sometimes good for the Eldar, and what is bad for Mankind is sometines bad for the Eldar, and vice versa. 2) The Imperium respects the fact the Eldar's small population, they are still a major race, and a dangerous, if not priority threat to Mankind, while the Eldar know well the Imperium's iron fist, and consider it a useful weapon to maintain some form of the order in the galaxy. And 3), the Eldar apparently consider Humans the best neighbors among the galaxy; they're not blindly ignorant and naive like the Tau, more reasonable than Necrons, and are definitely better better neighbors than Orks, Tyranids, or the Forces of Chaos and the Dark Eldar.

Question now is: how far are both sides willing to take it?

Deathwatch questions

I was reading the ultramarines omnibus and in the 2nd book there was a squad of deathwatch.I have never come across them before.I gathered they are marines skilled at fighting xenos
Are they a militant arm of the ordo xenos, like the grey knights of the ordo malleus?
They seem to retain the marking of their chapter so its not a chapter like the grey knights?
Also the captain of the ultramarines said he served in the deathwatch so can marines just leave when they feel like it?
Wher can i get more info on them?
Any info would be great thanks
