LOTR Conversions acceptable?

Well, I have a henchman army with 2 units of DCA/Crusadors. As we all know, the models available for DCA and Crusadors are expensive and only come in 2 poses, so I did not want to buy them. For my DCA I just made some witches and painted them appropriatly. For my crusadors, i shopped around the GW site, looking for cheep models with swords and shields. I considered the WHF warriors of chaos, but then at my flgs i managed to get a bunch of LOTR easterlings, who all have nice swords and shields. I painted them up in red and black, with some silver in certain places, put big red Inquisition seals on their shields, and called it a day. I have used them in friendly games and local tournys with no issue, but recently, I was planning on taking them to a tourny at a GW store, and someone told me that i would probably not be able to use LOTR minis in GW tournys. I don't understand. They are made by GW, so why wouldn't they be allowed in GW stores? Is this true?

Can I get away with this?

Ok first post, but I wonder if this is something I can get away with without people caring.

I play Chaos Space Marines in 40k, and the sorcerors we are able to use can take a flying disc (when given a mark of Tzeetch/demonic steed), but there is no model for it.

I would like to use the follwing model in its place.
PAGK question

What's a safe bet when buying these units to get a variety? What I mean by variety - when I choose a purifier list I'm going to need X amount of them plus rhinos and heavy support or when I want to do strike squads I choose X amount of them to get this variety. I play 2k point games but I'm looking to hoard about 22-2500 points to give myself the most variety but I would like a draigo wing a purifier and a 3rd for fun list that I could make with all of these guys. Someone a while back had a tau list that showed how many of each unit you could have to make the most of every possible list you could make. =) so if you guys have some advice on HQ's to buy how many normal PAGK and how many dreadnoughts - dreadknights - storm ravens what have you would make the biggest and best variety with the most comp lists that would be amazing =D

Infected imperial guard

Hello Fellow dakkanauts today I had brilliant and as far as I know original. An imperial guard regiment that has been infected by a virus that mutates them into half tyranid and half human hybrids. The virus is infact a mutation of a genetic weapon which was deployed when the reseach center where it was being developed was attacked by a tendral of a near by hive fleet. The cadian 124th regiment stationed at the center deployed the prototype weapon in the middle of a battle against the invading tryanids little knowing the lictors had corupted the mixture only hours before it was isued to the troopers. The weapon backfired and instead of targeting tyranid cells it lodged its self in non tyranid cells and mutated them into tyranid cells. Thus by this method the 124th were completley destroyed and mindless abominations were born in their place.

Ok fluff out of the way as you can probably guess i am going to build an army to represent the infected 124th cadian using the tyranid codex. Ok here are some of my ideas for infected substitutes for tyranid units:

gaunts-guardsmen
tervigon-chimera
canifex-leman russ
biovores-basalisk
hive guard-sentinal
gargoles-winged guardsmen
tyranid worrier-ogran

Please comment on fluff and post ideas for substitues! :stealer: :guardsman: :stealer:

and another thing THIS IS NOT A GENE STEALER CULT

Question about CSM close combat weapons

Hi there!

I've been discussing with a friend about the meaning of "vanilla" CSM having a close combat weapon in their standard profile, while loyalist marines don't. It's the only difference between them, but I've red that poses a big advantage over the loyalists. I'm not sure what does that mean, since normal CC weapons don't give any special ability unless they're used in pairs, which grants you an extra attack... could it be that having both a pistol and a CC weapon counts as 2 CC weapons, therefor having an extra attack not described on the profile?
Apocalypse Allies and Themed Armies

I love Apocalypse games since you have the freedom to basically anything you want and use anything you want. I was wondering what apocalypse armies were out there that used 2 or more armies together as one force. I'm interested in both fluff (the story behind these alliances) and the tactics. I'm especially interested in armies that combined Chaos since that is what I play.
I am currently working on a massive apocalypse army that will hopefully include just about all things Chaos. However, I love the Necron and Ork armies and want to find a way to make them part of my Chaos army. Since most of my Chaos forces are dedicated to either Khorne or Tzeentch I was playing with the idea of having an army of Necrons that have been tricked by Tzeentch into service (haven't worked out the details yet) and maybe an Ork army dedicated to Khorne. This would give me lots of inspiration for cool conversions and link my two armies.

So what offer Apocalypse Armies are out there?

Hi guyz, I am making a death guard army (pre heresy) ... so non- nurgly! Here's my reather small army list

4 Space marines + Sergeant with power weapon
10 Space marines
4 Assault marines + Assault Sergeant
Captain with terminator armour and power weapon

So that's it for now, various non-heavy weapons within the units (non-heavy for fluff purposes). So what I did was gave the two sergeants with power weapons sythes, again for fluff purposes. The Captain will be holding a sythe and he has terminator armour to be a Death Shroud, one of the two body guards for their primarch Mortarion (Once again, death shroud is following fluff).

Dilemma:

Should I give my assault marines sythes as power weapons or stick with chain swords? They aren't sergeants so ... What?

Recreation of the "Battle for Macragg" Needs help!

Hey all,
I'm trying to recreate the battle for macrgg and im trying to figure out how I can cut some of my costs to do it. Right now im looking at buying two 6x4 games tables to make an 8x6 table. I was thinking of buying the "Imperial fortress wall" but its up there in price. I want to also make a city within the walls of the fortress. I already have a few of the Imperial city pieces i.e Sanctum Imperialis ect. Then inside the city I want to make the Ultramarine Temple / Fort where Marneus Calgar is tellin the Ultrasmurfs what is what. outside the main walls I want some trenches and barbed wire and defenses. I figure I can fit the Ultramarine's shit on half the board maybe taking up a bit more. Then I want to make the rest of the terrain have hills and mountains so the other player's can hide units and maneuver.

So now you know the whole Idea, im looking for some alternatives to the 700 euro wall and some easy to place terrain for some depth to the board, or easy ways to make these pieces.

I do understand some of the more know how fans of the Ultrasmurfs fluff may have a problem w / layout of the Terrain so please let me know of any ideas/ helpful suggestions to help me make this as accurate as possible.

Fantasy units in a 40k game?

At the risk of sounding like a complete moron, I'd like to ask about the compatibility of Fantasy and 40k units rules-wise. I love my IG, and I also love my Dwarfs, and with enough time I think it'd be fun to implement multiple armies into one. PLEASE do not take this too seriously! It is silly and I realize that but I think it could be fun! This is something I’d probably never bring up at my flgs but with a few friends, perhaps.

Before I get gunned down, just let me say that fluff is out of the question. I don't care about the fact that a Dwarf axe wouldn't be able to do jack squat to hardly anything, including flak armour and they'd get torn to shreds by even lasguns. I just think it'd be a fun little excursion, to be able to throw some Fantasyhammer units into a 40k game or two. All stats would be the same, so yes that means Dwarfs (I'm just using them as an example since it's the only army I'm truly familiar with through and through) would often be on equal footing with Space Marines.

I haven't put a very large amount of thought into this, and I'm sure you, the community, has more knowledge of overall rules for both 40k and Fantasy seeing as how I just started playing 40k little more than a year ago and Fantasy maybe 6 months ago.

Biggest problems I saw:

1. Most Fantasy units probably don't have anything to crack tanks since there's no armor penetration so they have no equipment like Melta weapons and such specifically made for anti-armor. That makes fighting vehicle armies hell for everyone. My remedy? Write up basic rules for some of the weapons i.e. runic dwarf weapons or war machines, and perhaps give some cavalry the spear weapons of the IG Rough Riders.

2. 40k Is very shooty, Fantasy hammer is not. Many armies would get knocked out in the first fusillade of fire from the 40k army. However, most of what I can see of Fantasyhammer still has good armor saves if needed, and perhaps ward spells can be expanded? Plus, many Fantasy armies have a good amount of missile weapons when needed, and some (such as wood elves) have very good special effects like insta-kill arrows which my cannon crews and thanes have often fallen victim to.

3. Movement is very different, including unit coherency. I say, let the units be incoherent! Use the basic movement rules from Fantasyhammer for marching, running, etc. but they shouldn’t need to be in blocks; that would just cause an entire unit to be wiped out by a single ordnance blast. However, since close combat requires the units to all go into base contact anyways, just have them loosely reform if need be for the combat based on the rough estimate of how they were beforehand.

4. Close combat: 40k units use 40k rules, Fantasyhammer use Fantasy rules. Spearmen, ranks, and such would be the same as in Fantasy and the close combat is calculated nearly exactly the same in terms of wounds and such. The part where it gets sticky is resolution… This is where I’m guilty of not reading the rules well enough, my friends usually just calculate it out before I even try and tell me who takes what leadership test to not run away. I understand the points system from Fantasy well enough, just not everything that goes into it. Ranks, standards, and such wouldn’t be present to the 40k army so I don’t really know how that could work, whether the Fantasy rules would be dropped in favor of the simple unit strength fraction 40k leadership test or what. It seems like it would be simpler, sure, but that takes a lot out of the essence of Fantasy close combat, which is what I believe makes the game (along with watching my buddie’s first rank of Glade Guard turn around and realize the entire second rank got pulverized by a well-placed cannonball :D )

5. Magic and dispelling: Magic is, obviously, entirely different. Even Dwarfs, who don’t even use spells, get a dispel pool. Of course, as I said I don’t know any other armies well enough in Fantasy to claim knowledge, so I honestly don’t know how magic casting works except for if a spellcaster does something wrong his head can explode. I’m a bit lost on this one too I suppose, though I imagine homebrew rules for warp vs magic can be pounded out by some veteran players.

Anyways, I just felt like it may be a fun idea for those of us who enjoy throwing fluff to the winds once in a while. Plus, as the rulebook says, “The most important rule is that none of the rules are important,”

I may just be paraphrasing, however.

Eldar Autarch, Farseer, and Warlocks on Jetbikes

Hey there Dakka
I'm not entirely sure if this is old news, but I stumbled across these pictures while wandering around the net the other day. They seem to be new Eldar jetbike HQ's. I found it on this website, which seems to be in Russian or some other eastern bloc language (excuse my lack of knowledge on exotic linguistics - can anyone read it?). I can't tell if they're GW or some other company, but they are pretty sexy badass nonetheless. They were posted in august, maybe the new Eldar codex isn't far away?

http://forums.warforge.ru/lofiversion/index.php?t69900-50.html

Autarch on Jetbike

Farseer on Jetbike

Warlocks on Jetbikes

cheers and enjoy!
-Atalay

Choosing a Pre-Heresy Army - Alpha Legion or Iron Warriors?

So my gaming group is starting up a Great Crusade/Horus Heresy campaign, and we are all picking Legions to do. So far, i've narrowed my choice down to two legions - Iron Warriors and Alpha Legion.
PROS and CONS of Each:

Iron Warriors

Pros: Cool color scheme, easy to paint, I like their tactics, and they can be used with my other CSM as long as I cut off Imperial Icons.
Cons: I don't like the gold and silver combo, I'd rather just have silver. Also, Iron warriors are a tad overdone.

Alpha Legion

Pros: Cool color scheme, fun to paint, interesting fluff, and you don't see them very often.
Cons: Cannot be used with other Chaos Space Marines (their color scheme changed) and I don't care much for their tactics.

Thoughts?

IG planetary invasion

So how does the Imperial guard get their initial invasion force onto a planet? Do they have the ability to use drop pods? Or do they just use tons and tons of Valkyries till they get a beach head?

Seeing as flying a huge ship into the atmosphere to unload 400,000 troops would seem kinda ballsy with all the anti-aircraft fire coming from the planet.

Anyone ever play 40k killzone ?

If you can answer yes to the question, post your favored list and if your feeling EXTRA shareful, include an awesome thing your favorite model did during a game

I will get it started

I had

Warpspider exarch: power blades, dual spinners, brawler (+1 str)
Warpspider: Medipac (fnp to the model and one model within 6")

Howling banshee exarch: Executioner, brawler, acrobatics
Howling banshee: brawler

3x Rangers w Crackshot

The coolest thing I had a model do was when my Warpspider exarch shot a terminator to death, then warped to base contact with him (to drag him back to my table edge)

In my opponents turn, an assault cannon/ Chainfist terminator came on the board, shot my warp spider exarch with the assault cannon ( I made all my armour saves as he got no rends) the terminator then charged into the warp spider, who then ended up getting one wound on the termy, who promptly failed his 5+ invul save and died.

That model also has claimed the lives of 2 tau team leaders (one a crisis suit, the other a stealth suit) and 2 other firewarrior equivalents aswell

Recent Technologies that make Space Marine's real

So I just came across an article in which researchers have began to work on the possibility that humans can go into hibernation or suspended animation. I began thinking Sus an Membrane.

Here is the link:
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/02/09/scientists-study-suspended-animation-for-wounded-warriors/

I know there are other recent developments but I can't seem to remember them.

What do you guys think?
Sisters of Battle troops

While gluing together my sisters who had fallen apart, something occurred to me about the SoB troops.
I'll guess it's obvious to you all, but the sisters seem to have the most expensive troop choice in the game.
Not maximum, maybe, but the minimum required points to hold an objective, at 125.
I don't know of another army that has a more expensive minimum troop unit.
But as if that wasn't the worst, a sisters troop choice has no real means to contribute to a fight from their objective until the fight comes to them.

Space marines, at 80 points (the second half of a combat tactics squad) has a missile launcher, or 10 points more for a lascannon.
Or Scouts, who can have all sniper rifles at 75.
Termagaunts have the fleshborer, which might as well be a bolt pistol, But a squad of 10 only cost 50 points. So they aren't much of a sink if they're just objective sitting.
Warrior brood can manage 100 points to get a single 36 inch range gun (barbed strangler) while sisters would need 130 for the same with a heavy bolter.
Orks can easily squeeze out a troop choice for around 60 points, or less with gretchin.
Guardsmen not only have a number of cheap troops choices, but are designed to still be able to be useful when the rest of the army is assaulting an enemy across the board with morters, lascannons, autocannons and the like.

I suppose you could argue that the sisters trade the ability to kill enemies at range for the ability to survive when fired upon at range, but it's a dang expensive trade.
Especially for a unit that (ideally) survives through all 5-7 rounds of combat in a game.

But maybe I'm thinking about more typical tactics, and the Battle sisters troops aren't designed for them.
It's starting to look like the best idea for my girls is to place my objectives or starting line as close as possible to the enemy.
Not because I'm a CC army, of course not, but so that they're that likely to end up in bolter range at the beginning/sooner in the fight.
I need more 40k friends so I can test this.

Complaining about my favorite army... again.
