Quad pistol case

I saw a lot of people suggesting the quad pistol case as a inexpensive alternative to the GW figure case. I was wondering if Dakka could give me some more information on it. How is it with bigger models like the DE hydra or manticore? About how many models can you fit into it? Is there any other useful information you can share with a noob?

Checkbox grid generator

I've found that using dice to keep track of how many 'crons I have left before phase out leads to too many
mistakes for me, so I wrote up a perl script to generate a grid of check boxes to use for tracking the same
information. I thought it might prove handy for other people too, so I figured I'd post it. It's pretty simple,
just invoke it as follows:
checkboxes.pl <#of empty boxes> <#of boxes per line><total # of boxes>

So for example, to make the grids that I'll be using for the tournament I'll be playing in this weekend it looked
like this:
$ ./checkboxes 34 15 45
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 15
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 30
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
| | | | |XX|XX|XX|XX|XX|XX|XX|XX|XX|XX|XX| 45
+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+
(note: it looks much better if you hit "view plain")

Why the 'Nid codex should not be read sensually

Alright, so me and my buddies were all gathered round reading the new Tyranid codex, when one of us *cough* the spaz *cough*, talking in a sexy voice, read one of the weapon names. Needless to say, hilarity ensued. Here are some of my favorites:
-Flame Spurt
-BioPlasma
-Bioeletric pulse
-Barbed strangler
-Devourer
-Barbed Strangler
-Flesh Borer
-Impaler cannon
-Ripper Tentacles
-Rupture Cannon
-Spike Rifle
-etc...
So yeah.
Am I getting gouged on shipping?

Hey Everyone,

Is 11.50 GBP (8.50 GBP, 2 GBP for some signature upon delivery) a reasonable price to ask for shipping for 25 Tyranid models (1x Biovore, 10x Genestealer, 9x Hormogaunts, 4x spore mines, 1x Ripper swarm) from Leichesterchire, UK to Ohio?

Someone is asking that much to ship the aforementioned models, and I think it's a bit much. I took approximately that many models to my local post office this morning--8x Genestealers, 12x Hormogaunts, 1x metal chest/carapace from a metal Carnifex, since I don't have a Biovore, but I'm guessin it's the same weight.

The total price for these items was about 7.50 usd..which is just under 5 GBP, HALF The PRICE they're charging me for shipping!!

So, I don't know how shipping works in the UK, perhaps it's actually a bit more than that, but I think 8-10 GPB is a bit much...hopefully somebody in the UK could check on that or confirm it.

I feel like I'm getting ripped off!

Win at all costs and the politicization of gaming

I don't know how things are where you guys & gals play, but I see a creeping trend of elitism getting into the game. The more people I get to know, the more seriously people seem to take this game: People who never have their lists ready before you come to your scheduled game, ask you what you're running, and then take things to specifically counter it... Every single time. And people who get too much of a kick when they beat you. Or people who take a completely unfluffy, incoherent, overkill everything list.

Basically, people who don't know the difference between a friendly game and a tournament.

I find people taking this game too seriously and who spend virtually ALL their free time at the shop. When this happens I see clicks forming that include people who spend every waking moment there. And then there's everyone else who has a life. They are no longer welcome and a very inbred, unhealthy attitude ensues. That's what caused me to leave my home game store and switch over to spend all my time with Commissar Katherine.

I see that so many people seem to have lost their love for the hobby.... Making a campaign with a story, painting something that's truly unique. Make no mistake, there are still plenty of those people around, but they seem to be a shrinking minority.

Anyone else seeing the same thing where they are? Tell me how, where, why, and what you think about it. I want to see if I'm the only one.

Are Armorcast/Epicast models tourny legal? Should they be?

My next painting project after I finish some 15mm Napoleonic stuff (check out the recent game "Lasalle". It's great....certainly alot better than "Black Powder".) is a World Eater themed CSM army. To this end, I'm in the final stages of negotiating the purchase of an old Armorcast Cannon of Khorne for use as a "counts as" vindicator. I already use an Armorcast Gobsmasha in my Space ork army as a "counts as" looted wagon. For those who are not familiar with what I'm talking about, here is a link that discusses the pre-Forge World resin models that GW licensed:
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Resin_Vehicles_&_Titans

So what do you lot think? Are Armorcast and Epicast models tourny legal? A case could be made that since they were legally authorized by GW at the time of their production that they would be tourny legal. Now if I'm not mistaken the actual wording of the GW rules for their in-store gaming requires figures be "Citadel miniatures" or "Forge World models" they are probably not for official events and instore games at GW locations. However what about tournies and other events at FLGS locations that generally base their rules upon the GW model? Yes, the final answer has to be "it depends on the local organizer and will vary from place to place.". But what do YOU think? Are Armorcast and Epicast models that were authorized by GW at the time of their production tourney legal? Should they be?

TR

Attempting to stay sane whilst putting together a large metal model

Stage 1 - Read new Tyranid Codex and realise Hive Tyrant is the only HQ unit of any worth
Stage 2 - Purchase shiny new Hive Tyrant boxed set and admire cool pic of immaculately assembled and painted miniature on front of box
Stage 3 - Beam with enthusiasm at wife whilst showing her shiny new Hive Tyrant Boxed set. Wife shakes head in despair and mutters something about an unfinished High Elf Dragon she saw at the back of the warhammer cupboard the other day
Stage 4 - Ignore wife's trifling remarks and open shiny new Hive Tyrant Boxed Set. Ponder as to why Bonesword might be bent at a 45 degree angle
Stage 5 - Attempt to bend Bonesword back into shape. Realise with mild annoyance that achieving perfect straight edge is impossible task
Stage 6 - Discard Bonesword for the time being (will prfobably go for scything talons anyway) and examine other parts. Ponder as to why all parts have giant lumps of mishapen metal attached to them
Stage 7 - Begin arduous task of removing giant lumps of metal. Attack each lump with cutters. Manage to remove part of lump. 90% of lump still remains. Discard cutters and pick up file.
Stage 8 - 30 mins later, have successfully removed one lump of metal. Return to Stage 7 & repeat with next lump
Stage 9 - Several hours later and all unsightly lumps of metal have been removed. Examine parts with satisfac... hmm, what are those small spiky bits of metal?
Stage 10 - Begin filing and cutting away small spiky bits of metal. Ponder as to why boxed set was not assigned patience rating. Decide that nobody would buy boxed set with patience rating of 6 billion.
Stage 11 - All small spiky bits of metal removed. Examine parts with satisfac... bugga! Poxy mould lines still visible!
Stage 12 - File all mould lines away. Ponder as to why wife is directing an annoyed glare at the new sofa. Ah, small lumps of metal and silver filings everywhere. Placate wife by fetching vacumn cleaner
Stage 13 - Finish vacumning the sofa. Examine parts with satisfac... Scream! Right hand side forward spore chimney is slightly out of alignment. Attempt move with fingers. Spore chimney refuses to budge.
Stage 14 - Attack spore chimney with pair of pliers. Hah! Now looks perfe... Oh for feth's sake, pliers have left scratch marks on spore chimney. Refuse to care anymore. Spore chimney has cleary incurred damage from bolter fire.
Stage 15 - Assemble model with blu tac to get rough idea of final appearance. Ponder as to why so many gaping holes are visible between parts.

Elect to continue tomorrow once fellow Dakka members have imparted wisdom over the fine art of assembling metal models

Just at a loss for LGS

Gamers owning gaming stores is a 50/50 gamble:

On one side, you are going to have the stereo-typical gamer, overweight and smells like rancid blue cheese crumbles, who then runs the shop the same way he takes care of his personal hygiene.

On the other side, you have the serious gamer, no defined characteristics, that runs his shop as he runs his life and gaming. A serious business that is run well the shop reflects it is as well.

In my hometown, I have seen LGS after LGS being run by the gamers that have failed or barely survive. Either people that should never have been given a business loan (over extending themselves financially or using the shop as their own 40k supply depot) or people whose shop is a direct representation of themselves (disgusting stinking pits of despair).

One shop in particular smells absolutely horrible. I am not exaggerating in that the shop smells like old, old food and body odor which you have to seem to swim through when you enter. The owner is not particularly a slob, but his employees have hair that practically shines with grease under the fluorescent lighting.

In addition the shop, whether in laziness or slovenliness, uses the outdoor garbage containers in their gaming area. I am talking about the 4'-5' tall green garbage containers that the garbage trucks lifts up with it's claw to dump into the back. So last week when Joe Schmoe decided that he was done spilling his supreme carne asada and bean burrito all over the gaming tables and threw it away, it is still sitting in the damn garbage can a week later because the huge can is not completely full and therefore not taken out for the garbage truck.

I won't go into detail on the restroom but I will just give a general idea. I was deployed to Haiti in 1996 with the military. The porta-john facilities were cleaner.

Now in comparison, there are three game shops about 2hrs away in another city and the difference is beyond night and day. The professionalism of the owners and employees is reflected upon the cleanliness and appearance of the store. There are rules for eating, but the customers truly take a vested pride in their shop so really not needed. At the end of the night, customers help the employees clean up the store, including the restrooms and taking trash out to the dumpster. Each time I have gone to these stores early in the morning prior to opening and when the doors are opened, you are entering a store that is clean and professional looking, not looking like the gaming area of a basement gamer who has had friends over all night.

I know we have some store owners on the boards here. I would ask that those of you that take pride in their shop and present a professional and fun atmosphere keep up the great work. There are plenty of customers like myself that will choose your store every time over a pig sty of a shop.

To those of you running a crap hole, you are losing customers. I have no qualms about taking my business to a better run shop and spending my cash there instead of local and I am sure there are others like me.

GW Matt Varnish - no more?

This may be belated news to a lot of you, but I popped into GW not too long ago to replace my trusty purity seal spray which had kept the faith for well over 5 years on and off. I was slightly perturbed to find that apparently GW no longer produce matt varnish - the only stuff they had was a 'satin' finish, which although not too OTT, is still a gloss varnish. Surely I can't be the only one who thinks gloss varnish is the work of the devil? Why would anyone spend hours painting a mini and then spray it shiny? I ordered some Army Painter matt varnish from Maelstrom which will hopefully do the job. Anyone know why GW have discontinued matt varnish? Seems a ludicrous business decision to me.

Top 10 signs you own too much Warhammer:

Top 10 signs you own too much Warhammer:

#10. Selling your spare stuff might be enough for a down payment for a home.

#9. You don’t need to buy the latest army that they released a codex for because you already own it.

#8. You end up buying a rune priest because you can’t find the one you thought you have, and then you find it and now have one too many.

#7. You are trying to get down to only 5 armies

#6. When you already own a finished Thousand Sons army, and a Word Bearer's army and you have a complete unbuilt pre-heresy Thousand Sons army, Noise marine army, and Night Lords armies, and that is just for chaos.

#5. You have 3 fantasy armies and you don’t play fantasy.

#4. You go looking for your demonhunters army and you can’t find half of it.

#3. While thinking about building a demonhunters army you wonder how much IG you have and find out that you have 2 platoons of mech guard including heavy weapons squads, and you never tried to build or wanted an IG army.

#2.
Red Caps Corner in Philadelphia

First off let me start by saying I haven't been into the hobby for very long and have very little experiance at LGS.
I have been to this store around 7 times now and am still undecided on if I will continue to go there. The store holds the bare minimum stock for 40k, I'm talking on or two blisters per army. They do have Jester paint but don't carry GW paint. They have an "upstairs" that has two tables that are wonderful. The only huge issue I have is some of the other customers and some of the staff. This week a buddy and I were about ready to play a game of 40k, some kids where using one of the table so we took the 2nd one, when the manager came up and told us that we needed to be off the tables by 6pm because they would be having a Pathfinder game up there, No problem. About 5 minutes later a staff member came up and said one of us needed to get off our table because some regulars and the manager needed to play Pathfinder early. Then another staff member proceded to come up and rudly say to my buddy and I, "Well this is my table I guess!" No eye contact nothing!! We then proceded to pack up and head downstairs to the card tables to set up. Adam the manager said, "hey don't worry about we are just going to play down here" the icing on the cake was the staff member coming back up stairs while we are playing going, "I guess Adam gave away our table again" very smugish.
While I applaud the manager, Adam, for doing the right and being a good guy, his staff is rude and overbearing.
Anybody had any incidents there?? Should we stay with it, or move on??

Games Stores that closed in a odd way

The ULGS Thread got me thinking of stores that died, Not necessarily bad stores but stores that didn't last for odd reasons.

Thinking back there was a great store in St Louis that I always tried to visit when I traveled there, It was called the Hobby Shop. Great Stock the owner Ken was a nice guy, but he let his insurance laps and a drunk driver drove threw his store.

After that he was unable to reopen... a major lost for the town.

Then there was a shop that was about an hour away from my home town. Once again the owner was a nice guy.. Wanted to be on the cutting edge of any fad going.. started a book store and grew it very quickly by buying and selling used romance novels. Then he saw what kind of money he could make off Pokemon and Magic cards. This was about the time the Legends expansion came out. He got into war games and comics also.. great stuff...then moved to a larger store and was going to put in more stock and even video games and pool tables. But about this time I moved away and wasn't able to get time to visit for a year or so.. The next time I went in there, the store was dead. Newest stock was months old and people setting around and smoking, Looked more like a pool hall verse a book store. A few months later I got a call from a buddy that the store owner was arrested and store was closed down. Apparently he thought he could make a very nice profit off drug paraphernalia. I guess he didn't figure in the whole legal part of it.

Anyone else has stories like this??

Adepticon Registration HACKED

Check your credit card statement carefully if you registered for Adepticon in the last week or so. Their registration cart was hacked somehow. I actually had to cancel my credit card on Monday and order a new one. A representative from Adepticon was nice enough to email me and even call me to let me know what happened, but the whole situation was still very irritating... :(

Running the show

Hey all, I was chilling at one of my favorite Friendly Local Card & Comic places when I found out that they have a sister location that they actually hold tournaments at for various card games. Once the guy behind the counter found out that I played 40k he told me some interesting information. This sister location is also looking into the entire wargaming market. They carry a few loose boxes and blisters here and there, but what the owner was looking at is getting some gaming tables. Here lies the issue.
The owner is looking for somebody to run the wargaming section of the store as he doesn't have any real wargaming experience to draw on. I thought to myself, "I have the time, and a little money would never hurt either. I could run this thing!" But then I really got to thinking about it. While I have a decent understanding of the rules, I'm certainly not Gwar. And as far as time spent in the hobby, I've only been in the game for about two years. It's enough time to see 4th ed go to 5th, and I think I did a decent job tracking how that affected everything. However, the reason I'm writing to you Dakka is that I wish to draw on the accumulated experiences of any members here that have run stores with gaming tables, managed tournaments, or anything along that line of thinking. I need to know what kind of responsibilities I'll have to face going in to this, as I really don't want to screw this up. Thanks for reading, and I appreciate any replies that can be tossed my way.

Staying Motivated

So I was recently at home from work for 3 weeks due to a surgery and got a lot of modeling, gaming, and painting in. I also managed to read a couple books (both wargaming and non-wargaming related).

However, now that I am back at work, I don't have the motivation, it seems, to keep painting. I get home, and all I want to do is sit around, play xbox and watch TV. I really want to finish painting my IG army and finish modeling my Imperial Fist Kill Team, but I haven't managed to start up again.

How do you guys deal with this sort of lack of motivation/laziness? Do you even try in the week or focus mostly on weekends?

Thanks

Cubed Foam Sheets?

I just recently purchased a couple of the new plastic trygon kits, as well as other 'nids. I can't figure out how I can possibly safely transport them without either magnetizing everything (a pain) or using cubed foam. However cubed foam seems to be rather ridiculously expensive.

Anyone know where I can get sheets of cubed foam for a reasonable price?

The best I have been able to find is Hardigg cases, where I can get a super durable hard case with inside dimensions: 20.0" x 14.0" x 7.7" for about $125 US.

I feel like somebody has to make cubed foam in sheets, I just don't know where to look, and product searches pretty much just all turn up SKB, Hardigg, Pelican, and HPRC brands (which are all pretty much the same).

Wargaming solutions of similar size are priced in the same range, so I don't know why I wouldn't just get a nice indestructible case for the same money.

Randomly, does anyone have a picture of a Trygon in the Battlefoam "Trygon" foam slot? I'm not really sure how it fits in there unless you have to take it apart.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question.

question for GW staff on a purchase in store that doesnt add up

Today i went to GW to exchange some previous purchase, all brand new never touched. The trade in value was $259
and i exchanged it for $260 items , and paid the difference. The question is for staff or any store clerks that want to figure out
how a $2 difference total to $2.60 tax? to total of $4.60? I asked the GW staff how this happens, he replied its just $2 if i want to dispute it i can
find the manager when he is in store. Upon hearing that i felt rather insulted, it wasnt about the $2 at all. I just want to know how it added to that.
Not to mention i live quite far from the GW shop and i REALLY dont want to go there again to pick up $2

Any suggestions?
