Cold Wars 2012

Howdy folks!

I've seen a couple threads lately concerning pricing for GW products (shocker, right?) and wanted to see about helping out.

I hope I'm not violating any rules by offering, if I am, I'll assume this'll be locked, -fragment missing-'d.

For anyone on the east coast USA and have been to Cold Wars in PA can verify, GW set's up a rather large booth in a separate building, along with PP, to do the wholesale gig.

I suppose my question would be, as I'm headed there in March, if anyone would like me to snag things for them...I can. I can say from experience the prices are great, 50% off in most cases. So I mean, if there's a tank you want that wouldn't normally buy, or that final squad you're putting off, I can see if they have the goods and pick'em up for you.

Of course we're not talking thousands of dollars here, I *am* after all, a married man.

Again, if this thread is out of line in any way...I apologize. I just saw an opportunity to help out, especially for those AUS players that are looking for some cheaper alternatives.

PM I guess...or reply here. I've got three weeks before I'm due to head out so...let me know!

What's out there that you've never managed to beat in our, at times, most infuriating of hobbies?

I could never crack a 4th ed Nidzilla list. Not even once. Tried melta and plasma spam, did everything I knew, but no dice :'( In Blood Bowl I've had the worst luck against Nurgle teams for whatever reason as well (curse you Disturbing Presence!), though I still show 'em what for every now and then. In Anima I've never once killed the Legacy, though I have wiped the rest of the team using it.

Make this thread interesting, Dakka!

Best Way to purchase Warhammer in bulk

I'm not 100% positive if this is the right place to post this, so if I'm wrong it would be great if a mod could move it.

As the title states, I'm trying to find the best place to buy Warhammer in large quantities. I've had a bunch of people suggest the swap shop, but I can't seem to find the amount of stuff that I need to purchase. I keep seeing these ads on ebay where it's Warhammer 40k Imperial Guard Chimera x6 from Discount Warhammer Fantasy and 40k. The link to the ad is below.

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Warhammer-40K-Imperial-Guard-Chimera-x6-/390387865703?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ae4ee1867#ht_1698wt_1163

Is this a legit auction on ebay? It seems like a reasonable deal, but I want to make sure I don't get suckered into a scam

No models of fat folks?

Alright, so my wife today challenged me to find a model for a character she's making. A larger to fat figured lady in armour. I figured that wouldn't be too hard, but currently cannot much blubber on the webs (unless you count when I typed 'fat model' into google's image search) and it kinda amused me. I know most miniatures are fantasy based and all, but even in fantasy you get the odd fat but strong character (or the fat, evil bad guy) so it seems weird that there are no models, or that they're so tucked away that ten whole minutes of google failed to find any.

And yet you can find the Wet Nurse... :D

Anyone have any trouble with Army Painter and/or Alliance Game Distribution?

So I ordered some yellow primer three weeks ago from Army Painter. Being in the states, I guess they use Alliance Game Distribution[AGD] to do their shipping (otherwise it would come from Denmark). I was at work when my mother-in-law called me to tell me I have a package waiting for me. I came home to open it, excited that I would finally get to start painting my new Imperial Fist army, only to find my order of two cans of yellow primer turned into three cans of brown primer and dark shade. Well I had to wait until the next day to get an email back from Army Painter, which gave me the number to call for AGD customer service. After some back and forth (their records showed they shipped me the correct order) I got them to agree to a return. A week later(today) I get my second package and this time it is two red primers and some flock.

Anyone else have any trouble with these companies? I know it may not be Army Builder's fault and more likely the AGD company's fault. They could not even spell my name right after it was correct three times and my name is very English.

Another tale of painters? Who would like in?

Been trying lately to get the remaining chaos stuff painted for my WoC army and the odd bit of other stuff done, but keep either ending up too tired, or failing to find any motivation at all. So was wondering who would be interested in another tale of painters thread, where each month we set the goals of what we want done off the painting table, and post about it for the next few months. This can range from new players who's skills are shaky and wanting some advice on how to improve them, to tabletop gaming standard to showcase standard depending on whatever you want to do. Also from starting an army to finishing/expanding an existing one. Or two perhaps given us gamers are famous for having stockpiles of unpainted stuff knocking around.
Just reply below and when we have a dozen or so people interested will get a thread up in the P&M section :)

Worst Thing Your Girlfriend/Friends Have Ever Done To Your Models?

I'm curious to see what stories people have of their precious models being broken/sold/lost or worse and the reaction to finding out.

I'll start this off with what my girlfriend did to my Forgeworld Venerable Dreadnaught after a heated exchange :bleep: involving me painting. I'd just about finished painting it up, had attatched the banner etc and working on a few last details and had left it to dry while eating dinner. Later that night we had a 'disagreement' about something and ended up dangerously close to my paint station, basically I started to put it away and as I had it in my hand she swiped it and it went flying to the floor. Result = Snapped Banner, 1 Part of the Wing broken, Power Claw arm and Claws broken off and Finally the Dread had been broken in 1/2 between the torso and legs. In the end we patched things up and I fixed him up as good as possible and learnt to stay clear of the paint station area during arguments.

Would like to hear your stories too guys.

Rich

Battlefoam tank tray question

Hey folks, I have a question for those of you with Battlefoam bags.

I noticed their trays for Russes and Chimeras are listed as being 3" tall. Do you feel that's enough height to fit your tanks safely without removing the turrets, or would you recommend getting a slightly taller custom tray?
Wargames Foundry "Street Violence" rules. Where can I get them?

So, these rules are allegedly free. I can't find them on the WF site any more, though.

The only place online I've had any luck finding them has been at The Warstore. Unfortunately, though, the rules are ALL I want. At TWS, you've got to add the free rules download into your shopping cart to have them send you a link after check out. It won't let you check out with just the rules, though, because you have "no items in your shopping cart."

I bought a bunch of these models, pre-painted, at a gaming flea market/bazaar this weekend because I really liked the way they looked and were painted. I thought it would be cool to check out the rules for them.

Does anyone have a copy of the free pdf they could send me or know where I can download one myself?

Thanks in advance.

Eric

A plethora of shills

I'm starting to get a feeling on a certain issue, and I'm wondering if other people feel the same way. If not, that's fine, and I'll shut up, but I'd still just like to know.

It seems to me like every other post in the P&M Showcase is some commission painter using Dakka to shill his work for him. I don't mind seeing commission painters posting their work, but I'd definitely like to know it ahead of time. When I go to someone's thread expecting to see a piece they're looking for honest critique on, it's annoying to find a different sort of post altogether. People who are painting for money aren't looking for my criticism or suggestions, all they want is everyone to go 'ooh,' 'aah,' and 'here's some money!' When I come to a thread thinking it's from a regular painter, and find some commission painter, I feel like some street hustler is trying to run a con job on me.

It's not a big deal really, I just wish the posters would announce up front that it's a commission piece. Otherwise, it seems like it's designed to get me as the reader to go 'oh, look, this model is awesome, it's amazing, how does someone get something this good, and oh look, this guy will paint MY models for me for a few bucks!' It seems incrediblly dishonest, and not what Dakka is about.

If everyone disagrees with me, I'm perfectly willing to just zip and sit back down, but I'd like to know what everyone thinks.

Vassal for 40K

Because I concentrate more of my effort on the P&M aspect of 40K, I have not been able to get many games under my belt. I started 40k when 5th Edition first came out, and have only played about 10 games in total since then.
But, I still am interested in getting into the gaming aspect of the hobby and I decided to try my luck in a program called Vassal, a program where you can play online board games with other people in real time. And one of those games happened to be 40K... http://vassal40k.wordpress.com/

So that got me really excited and I created an army on Vassal, one that I thought I would test virtually before making a purchase. Just out of curiosity how often can you get a game of 40K in? It all looks so complicated...

Dissapointed with Finecast

I am 30 and have been playing 40k since i was 12. I have miniatures from all editions of the game and just picked up a new Finecast Lord Commissar to be a regular commissar for my second platoon blog.

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1160042a

(BEFORE OPENING) Initially I was excited. The detail in the model looked great. The texture looked slightly rough, just rough enough to give that latex paint some tooth to grip to.

(AFTER OPENING) Wow :bioniceye: The mini is soft and rubbery and feels brittle. Never before have I felt that I should worry about snapping a powersword in half. There is still the standard 1mm thick mold line I have to file off, I guess I will have to be extra careful prepping and storing this mini.

If anyone has experienced lots of playtime on this new minis can you tell me how they hold up?
I usually store mine sandwhiched flat between two sheets of eggcrate foam, will this damage it ?

~Lion~ :termiebadge:

Breaking someone else's model

For those of us that have done it, there is nothing like that sinking feeling as you watch your opponent's model fall to the cement flooring and shatter. It is almost as bad as the feeling when you have to look up at your opponent with a look of helplessness.

For me, it was the last tournament I attended. I was playing in the final round against a Blood Angels opponent and he had turned the tide against me. I was losing and he knew he had me in the preverbial death roll. In one of the final turns, I turned and my elbow knocked his Stormraven from the table, sending it to the floor. It burst into a few pieces and I quickly collected them. I turned to him and said, "All I can say is, 'I'm sorry.'" He placed the base back on the table and we completed our game.

I came to find out later that my Sportsmanship score in that particular game was tanked. Like, 2 out of 10 (I think). It was quite poor. I am of the belief that my opponent thought I did that on purpose, but that was not the case. I have not seen that particular opponent since to talk to him about it, but I was curious about Dakka's experiences.

Have you accidentally destroyed your opponent's model? How did you handle it? How did he?

KR case tray sizes.

Over the years many really old citadel cases and the odd ebayed newer ones have sufficed for me along with a lot of foam and cardboard boxes for miniature storage. However since having to put a lot of stuff into storage decided to get round to getting some KR cases by the summer, and hoping to save enough for the trolley style metal cabinet by the end of the year. I was wondering though with the huge range of trays available which would be right for me.
For infantry was wondering how people have found the M4H or M4T trays for GW stuff as this would give me a great amount of storage for the size of the KR cardboard cases compared to storage to space ratio that I have now. Or should I go for the next capacity down for any reason? I'll probably end up storing armies I'm using first, so it will (hopefully) be getting used for transporting around models as well if I find somewhere decent to play in London. And also for cavalry (this will be marauder horsemen with flails and chaos knights) is a cavalry specific tray best or just an infantry case with 2 sections merged together and the model stored on its side?

GW kits getting more complex/difficult to assemble or am I just getting old?

Annihilation Barge getting the pilots to sit whilst affixing the two hull plates and the back shielding with it's 3 connectors a side have been frustrating; and painting seems to be the last thing on the designers mind. Triarch Praetorian (using them as conversions for crypteks) the arms holding the staffs, well I swore lots and ended up pinning them. Necron bodies in general have been pinned to keep posistion whilst glue dries.

So the question is are GW kits getting more complex and harder to put together? or as the title says am I just getting old and grouchy?

A thread specifically to discuss the positive aspects of Games Workshop (and not ironically).

I understand there are a whole lot of people out there that actually like Games Workshop as company and what the company has done and produced, because well, I'm one of those people!

And sometimes it can feel (even though it isn't true) as though every single thread involving Games Workshop ends up focusing on the perceived negative aspects of the company's business practices.

So, this is a thread for people who genuinely like and appreciate Games Workshop to express positive sentiments about the company.

If you have negative feelings towards Games Workshop, that's completely fine. This thread is in no way trying to insinuate that those feelings are incorrect or wrong (far from it), but rather this thread is to focus on the positives and leave the negative stuff for another thread.

If you completely disagree with any or all of the sentiments expressed in this thread, feel free to sit at your computer, point at the screen and laugh at the poor deluded souls who are clearly drinking the GW kool-aid and posting, but please refrain from bringing any negative comments into this thread.

This is a happy fun place filled with flowers, where the world is wonderful and we all live in peace and harmony! :P :D

Seriously, just let the fanboys gush in a positive way, okay?

----

So I'll start off:

I've been playing GW games since 1992, and I personally really love the company and the games it has produced over the years and specifically my favorite game of all time Warhammer 40k, not the least of which because of the spectacular universe they created for the game.

At this point I sadly don't get to play as much 40K as I like because of my crazy work schedule, so actually tournaments are where I mainly do my gaming now. I love 5th edition and it is easily my favorite of all the 40K editions (and I've played them all) and I look forward to whatever crazy (or not so crazy) changes 6th edition brings to my beloved hobby.

Oh, and the Throne of Skulls tournament GW put on last year in Vegas was the absolute best tournament I've ever been to. The format was a little wacky, but I liked it as a nice change of pace from what I normally play, but the completely catered event (and the Vegas location) made it just an amazing experience.

I also really like Finecast models. Beyond the casting issues (which I've been able to avoid), I find the material to be much more pleasant to work with than metal, so the switch to Finecast from metal has made me happier overall.

Finally, I really like GW's current trend of making plastic kits that basically can be used to make one of two different units. I recognize that it affects some of the ability to make the models completely unique (as they have to share parts for the other configuration), but overall I think it really allows some nice flexibility to the kits and armies all while not completely taxing store shelf space (because you're getting two different codex choices for one box).

So that's my brief love letter about some of what I enjoy regarding GW. What about you?

Testing the waters for a new hobby product

At work I'm developing a new putty, which is being designed for artists. I'm checking to see if there would be anyone interested in it for the hobby.

The putty is easy to mold and could be useful for terrain. The part that makes it useful compared to foam is that it's cure on demand. It is easily workable and never hardens until a spot is heated up. Once the spot is heated up, it hardens in a wave spreading throughout the whole of it. Once it finishes after thirty seconds it has a hard surface, that is good for painting, or flocking. It does rolling gradually sloped hills pretty well too.

Do you think its worth it to also market it for easy terrain building?

what kind of wargamer are you?

hey there

there are many aspects of this hobby, like painting and modelling, tournamet gaming, fun gaming, fluffing, meeting with fellow gamers...... but everyone has his/her favourite aspect, and I'm wondering how it is distributed. How many of you are here for the gaming, and how many for the painting? or are you here for something different? I used to like fun gaming best, but the lack of fellow gamers where i live has caused me to turn to p&m-ing and fluff writing.

How about you?

My own wargame need community input

Ok so this is how it is I play so much 40k its incredible. I have a 3560 Point Ork Army, a 4000(ish) IG Army and I've lost count of my Nids. So i hit the books and am wanting to create my own wargame with the character card system as well as miniatures that Warmachine uses but this is where i'm stuck.

I know i want the game to be called "Genesis" as in the Fluff the "Genesis Program" was a series of operations and training excersises the EDN (Earth Defence Network) put in place to make a form of "Super" Human to go out into the universe and discover a new means of Habitable Planetry System. On the way into the universe the PISP's (Personal Intersteller Security Pods) the "Genesis Soldiers" were housed in were hit hard by a darkened energy frying half of the fifty Soldiers leaving them a pile of goop in their PISP's.

This leads on to lots of bad guys and bad guys who claim to be good guys but are really bad guys and so on and so forth. The part i'm stuck on is that I want it to be a game with lots of units and all out wars, but I want the leaders and Genesis Soldiers to play a larger part then they have in any other miniature wargame to date. So i dont know if i want the game to be more leader models and only a few soldiers and make it leader based with their effects helping spesific units in the army or do i want to make it kind of leader based but heavily infantry and tank based much like Games-Workshops games.

This is where you as a community of wargamers come into it. What would you want to play? are you happy with games like 40k? or do you want lots of leaders and fewer infantry and tanks? please input all comments are welcome and hopefully we will see Genesis on tabletops soon.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Come on people i need some help D:

How many people enjoy GW games and models?

If you despise GW and have ragequit and enjoy parading that fact around like a medal of honor, there is definitely a thread on this page for you.

But if you actually enjoy GW games, enjoy the models, and haven't sworn a blood oath to dance on their grave, then this thread is for YOU!

Let's hear about your years of commitment, your model collections, and future plans! Have a great game lately? An exciting army idea? a campaign? let's hear it!

SOMEONE out there MUST still be having a good time...

Myself, I am currently involved in a 40k Apocalypse campaign (lots of house rules to temper the potential for crazy)... I started a VC collection for fantasy based on those beautiful models, but I find I might have to shelf that project if I ever hope to finish these Dark Eldar (amongst my commission work).

Just tonight I got to watch a viscous battle for a bridge... 6k Apoc: CSM vs. IG. It was two seperated tables connected by a foot wide, 18" long bridge, which was the only objective! Lots of brutal violence all around... but the climax was Yarrick and a unit of Ogryns storming the bridge in the last turn and clearing it of plague marines!

NEXT PURCHASES: Still trying to decide whether to expand into wracks and grotesques or wyches and hellions first...

How to save money at GW

Let's face it: We have a very expensive hobby.

GW is not lenient on prices and is even worse when it comes to bigger objects eg titans and stompas

This is less of a guide and more of a caution to players. Here I have a few tips that I use and should help you save some money

Tip 1: Games workshop is your last resort
GW prices are incredibly expensive these days. Go figure. Last time I checked, Ghazgull thraka is $50 in plastic. You should not have to pay that much for a piece of plastic. There are so many other ways to get your mini's, and for less than half the price. EBay, Warhammer online stores are a great way of saving bucket loads of cash. Generally EBay is reliable and isn't too much hassle.
You can buy a codex at GW for $50 or so, why do that when you can get it for $20-$30 on EBay? The only time you should buy from GW is paints ( It's hard to find good paints other than Citadel) and maybe for the occasional AOBR or a start from a squad. GW are ripping of hundreds of people and they think they are getting a good deal. Employees will try to convince you it is, but that's a load of junk.

Tip 2: Why buy when you already have?
GW ends up selling you stuff that you can probably find lying around the house. They sell paintbrushes, glue and even pots to wash out your brush in. Most of this stuff you should already have.
Another great example of this is the modelling sand they sell. I went to look at it over the weekend, thinking it was something special, but all it really is sand. Just plain ol' sand you can get anywhere on the beach at Redcliffe etc. They sell a small pot of sand for $15. They probably spend about 2.50 on the sand and the container. That’s $12.50 profit, which is more than 80%.
Ridiculous. What else is there to say?

Tip 3: Mix and match
Here is a great example of how to save money. I needed a 11 man loota squad for an upcoming tournament. I got the squad for around $55; the normal price for an 11 man loota squad is $82. All you need is one GW boxed loota set, 2 extra torsos and 4 ork boys in a boxed set. Assembly the 4 lootas with the mek. Next using the rokkit launcher and big shooter that is in the loota box, make 2 converted lootas. Now you have 6 lootas and one mek. Now, I have a friend who’s crazy about burnas. He bought the boxed set as well, and we decided to trade, my burna bits for his loota bits. Then, using the ork boys set, make yourself another 4 lootas. You now have an 11 man loota squad, At only half price. Easy or what?

I hope this is a help to new players about to spend thousands of dollars on GW products. Enjoy!
:D :D :D
