Light source advice needed - headlight??

Hi dakkarites,

Need some advice if anyone can help. My lighting in my front room is crap and I desperately need a new light source for my painting/modelling. I have experimented with desk lights but it's just not working.

What I envisage I could really use is some kind of torch headband or hat. I have seen some torch magnifiers on amazon for quite cheap but all the reviews say the magnifier bit is ok but the light is a waste of time and that's all I need it for.

Can anyone recommend a good painting light source you can strap to your head?

Thanks

Apart from some minor details, the basic model is done and I will hopefully paint it soon. ;)

The main body from the Crescent blade was cut from a thick sheet of plastic card and filed & sanded down to the pointy shape you now see. A couple of plastic spoons made the engine, the lower side was build from various leftover parts e.g. an old DE Ravager.

Here are some more pics of it, hope you like it! :)

Some more pics can be found as usual on my blog: http://invivos.blogspot.com/

Cheers
invivos

Necron Harbinger tutorial

Hey guys, trying to figure out how to build a Harbinger. One of the guys in another forum said there was a tutorial out there but couldn't find it. Maybe someone here can help. I tried google but couldn't find anything.

You know of any tutorials on how to make a Harbinger?
Agh, not off the top of my head. You can pretty much do whatever you want though. I know there was a really cool one, somewhere that they had used the Praetorian body for it, but I don't know where it is.
That might be a good thing to ask in the Modeling section though, as there are people much more knowledgeable than I, on those matters.
Grimdark Predator Drone

So I'm slowly unpacking my models and bitz and finally did my first model in the new house. I'm finishing the HH novel Nemesis and got on to the idea of assassins.

Which of course got me thinking about our supermodern legions of robot assassins stalking the skies.

There's a lot A LOT of controversy about them in the real world and this is not the place for that argument. But you have to admit drones raining death on unsuspecting cars, houses, apartments, weddings, funerals and the like is about as GRIMDARK as you can get.

So here's my modest take on the Predator for 40k

The body is from the IMEX chemical plant set, the wings from Robogear and the skull from an old plaster company called Mystic Moldwyrks. So basically I used bitz I've had lying around for 5-10 years.

In games it will count as a land speeder thought I might play around with custom rules for it.

Anyway, thoughts?

Need help Word Bearers religious writitngs, etc.

After reading a few chapters, I began painting a test model in the Word Bearers' scheme. While I'm liking how it turned out so far, I can't help but think it's a little bare. So I thought of adding some writings and such to flatter areas to add a little umph, probably is I'm not sure how to effectively go about doing this.

Is there any real trick to adding writings and doctrines to say shoulder pads that look nice?
WIP ork stuff (stormboyz, tankbustas, burnas, boyz, boyz, buggies and trukks)

I intend to get tabletop ready all of the following stuff. Last ork is pretty much finished. If you want better pics of particular mini just ask also stormboy flying stand is just for show and I intend to use steel rods instead. "Deadline" for all this stuff is 24th.

c&c appreciated :)
--------------------
EDIT:
nob with the flag: the flag is really blood red with no highlighting (or any other color). Lighting just made it look really well painted.

last stormboy (above zagstrukk): if you notice I got 6 boyz and zags as nob. The "extra" boy is made from spare body half (that you get with the box), biker legs and other spare bitz.

blurry stormboy: his rokkit is converted zags rokkit (I added wings and stuff). Extra zagstrukk bitz come failcast zagstrukk which got replaced to finecast version.
Help - Paint still sticky on my resin terrin model

Hey all,

I am fairly new to miniwargaming, so I was hoping someone with more experience could help me. I got the tech canal set from Armorcast, and while I'm really happy with most of it, one of the pieces is interacting funny with my Games Workshop paints. I did wash it with soapy water and let it dry thoroughly before priming it, but most of the primer did not adhere. (I used spray on Chaos Black.) After I put it on, I could take off most of the primer with a dry cloth. It just did not adhere to the resin. I washed it AGAIN and let it dry and the second time the primer took only slightly better. I soldiered on and painted it the best I could and sealed it and it seemed that the paint on a lot of areas just never dried right. I finished it and put a sealer on it and it is still really sticky. Did I do something wrong, or is it a problem with the resin? I have done six other pieces so far, and this is the first one I have had issues with. I'd hate to have to strip this thing down to repaint it AGAIN, but I don't know what else to do.

Pre-emptive thanks!

Using WWII vehicles for Orks - What scale and what vehicles?

EDIT: I am not limiting myself to a German theme. Instead I think I'm just going to go for a 'WW2 militaristic' approach. So I'm considering Soviet, British, American, German, you name it... so long as it looks Orky :P

For colour palettes, I'll likely do vehicles black with red and metal bitz. The infantry in grey greatcoats with a mix of pickelhaubes, gas masks, Soviet fur caps and the MicroArt non-descript officer hats.

Hey guys,

So I was thinking of knocking up a mechanised Ork army at some point in the future with the Micro Art Studio greatcoat bodies/Ork gasmasks/helmets, etc.

Since this inevitably, in mute colours, leads to what some interpret as a 'Germanic feel' I thought I might have some fun (and possibly save some money) by converting up WWII vehicles.

As it stands I need to know what to use for Trukks, Battlewagons and Looted Wagons.

For Looted Wagons I thought perhaps a Panzer IV, but it might be an issue to get the roof off to make it open-topped, so I am not sure how practical this is (I do not own a hacksaw and I don't trust myself with one :P) I thought maybe an Ostwind, as it would already be open-topped, but the cannon on it is just insufficient. I can't really think of any open-topped self propelled guns that had turrets, I know there are plenty with fixed casemates to pick from, but I think this vehicle would demand a turret. Of course, there's always the possibility of converting the vehicle up with a sufficiently 'orky' gun; hell, now I think about it, even a Panzer IV's 75mm would look puny compared to most Ork ordnance. Any ideas?

Trukks; I thought maybe half-tracks of some kind, but these just seem too small. I could always get some from a scale larger than what is actually needed but I don't know. If I were feeling really cheeky, I suppose Opel Blitzs are a genuine option. But this is where I am more clueless than anywhere else. I recall the Germans having an open-topped hauler for their artillery/ammo of some kind, was a tracked vehicle with a large capacity on the rear, but I can't for the life of me remember its name. Anyway, here is where I really want some advice; I might just buy old Gorka Morka trukks but I fear they won't blend well with the rest of the force.

Battlewagons: Again, not so sure. I think I would have to severely mutilate an oversized kit of some kind; perhaps a Maus or a Karl Gustav (if the gun can be removed convincingly?).

Anyhoo, does anyone have any ideas? I've never tried 'orkifying' anything before, but it will likely consist of lots of roughly cut plasticard slabbered all over the hull and application of lots of bitz.

And, perhaps most importantly, what scale do I want? I read somewhere that 1/35 is much too large, but for vehicles like the Trukk this might be necessary. I also believe 40k is a little bit too 'big' anyway. But I would need vehicles that wouldn't look hilarious compared to the minis (say, an Sdfkz. where the driver's seat is visibly larger than any of the Orks it apparently carries). I might want to oversize the tanks. I had heard that 40k equates to around 1:42 but I am not aware of that being a scale?

Edit: Prowling has shown me that there are models at 1:48 scale? Is that 'close'?

I'm thinking of starting up an IG army, and was looking for some heads to use with the basic Cadian bodies, but after scouring a number of sites looking I am just not finding anything that really captures what I am wanting.

I would like to do find is something similar to the old British Commonwealth helmets from WW2, along with the officer peaked caps. I have found things similar to these, but they tend to almost always have gas masks for the faces. The other thing I was looking for as possibly some Wolseley helmets to use for command squads or stormtroopers as a nod to the military unit that used to be stationed out of my home town.

Examples of what I'm looking for in case anyone is not certain:

What is the best way to mix paint?

I am painting a Tyranid army and I am using "Elf flesh" for the skin and black with "Bolt Gun Silver" on the tips for the plates. To set a base layer for my models I first prime it black. The next step I use a 50/50 mix of "Elf flesh" and "Dark flesh". this is where I run into my problem. on small models it it not a big issue but when im painting large models it is a Hassel using two brushes and having the paint dry out to fast for my to apply it. Are there any other ways to do this mix?

WIP grey knight librarian conversion... Librarian-y enough?

Howdy dakka. A friend of mine asked me to convert him a grey knight librarian (since he isnt much for converting) and then gave me a half used box of grey knight termies and a big ol' pile of bits to throw it together. I want to give him something nice and unique so here is what I came up with. My worry is he looks too much like any other grey knight. What do you guys think?

Daft Question: were to go for wood for display bases?

I'm working on my first mini for a display piece. and want to put it on a nice big scenic base. I see a lot of models are but onto large blocks of wood.

this is what I'm looking to do. However I do not have a clue where to such pieces of wood.

Does any know if a decent online source?
or what type of shops might I go to?

Internet would be easier because my home town does not have any shops that would sell this i think.

cheers.

Tyranid Colour Schemes

Im having trouble deciding on a scheme in which to paint my nids. I found an online painter which helped me narrow down to something like these 3.

Scheme 1:

I quite like this as its a nice variant on the Kraken scheme. It would be based just with sand and a bit of flock - pretty generic.

Scheme 2:

Recently ive found myself loving the idea of a snow army. Maybe this scheme with a bit of snow on the models, with an ice/snow base.

Scheme 3:

Im not overly sure about this scheme - I think it could look good but it looks awfully planty like to me. Would be basing this with a jungle-ish theme.

So dear dakkites, would you be able to give me your opinion on these schemes? Your input would be very much appreciated! Also post up your own schemes if you want, give me some ideas :)

Thanks All!

Slaanesh daemon princess

Interesting challenge came across my desk. My girlfriend wanted me to make a daemon princess for her slaanesh army. She loved the basic daemon prince model and wanted it to look like a 'roided out female instead of male. Used gs for breasts, a corset and hair so she's not exposed. Let me know what you think. I've never been the beat sculptor but I think its pretty good.

Airbrush recommendations

Well I've managed to bend the needle in my airbrush :( and since it was just a knock off an iwata airbrush Its proving rather difficult to get parts. (ab-180 )

So it looks like its going to be far easier to get an entire new airbrush than getting a replacement part :(

Any good recommendations of a cheapish airbrush under £60 in the UK?
