Awesome Map Based Campaign Rules v2

Map based Campaign rules:

Terminology -
1. Banner - Represents your commander and attack force on the campaign map
2. Territory - area on the map that you may attack to gain a benefit.
3. campaign turn- when each player has finished attacking a territory.
4. Attacker - one who initiates attack on a territory.
5. Defender - one how defends a territory that is attacked.
6. Casualties - units that are destroyed during the course of a game.
7. Commander - an HQ unit that will always be restored at the beginning of your campaign turn.
8. Unconquered - a territory that is not controlled by any player.

The Grid - Each player has eight territories around his stronghold territory in a grid-like pattern. The first player's
opponents are adjacent and are therefore 2 territories separate each stronghold. This grid must be square shaped where
possible.

Each player has an 2000 attack list, 1500 defender list and an 1750 defender's list. Roll off to see who goes first/second/last/etc...for campaign moves.

Each unconquered territory is defended by a volunteer or random player from the campaign.

All the attacker's casualties are cumulative but may be replaced later. Units which ran off the board live to fight later
in the campaign. Defender lists are unaffected by casualties.

Territories a player conquers lends one special ability. Roll randomly for each
territory after it has been won by an attacker.
d6:
1. Factory/Breeding Pit - Allows one destroyed vehicle or monstrous creature to be replaced per campaign turn.
2. City - Allows +250 points to owner's defender lists. Is not cumulative(i.e. a second city does nothing more)
3. Medicae/ chirurgeon -Allows one damaged non-vehicle unit to be restored to original starting strength per campaign turn.
4. Supply Depot - Allows all repairs to one vehicle per campaign turn. Also allows owner to leapfrog (attack two territories
away from current position once per supply depot)
5. Training Ground - One eliminated troop choice may be replaced per campaign turn.
6.Space Port - Allows owner to attack any territory, not just those adjacent to their banner. Also allows owning player to
replace only one Elite, Fast Attack or secondary HQ unit per space port. (Not per campaign turn! Elites are hard to come by!)
Bonus Territory
7. Stronghold - Attack this territory and win to eliminate the opposing player. Defender uses full 2000pts and
sets the terrain. Use a Planetstrike mission if possible.

When attacking a territory occupied by another player's banner, the defender uses his attack list and
both player's record casualties.

If you attack a territory owned by another player and win, then you now control that territory and receive
the benefits from it.

When the attacker loses a game, or his commander is killed, then his banner returns to his stronghold to regroup
and the territory is not gained!

All territory benefits are conferred when the campaign turn has come full cycle.

Victory condition: Eliminate all other players from the campaign by winning an attack on their stronghold.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Please point out any obvious errors or holes in the logic structure...Playtest if you can.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Defender Strategies: How to beat superior forces

1. Cut the head off - killing the HQ effectively wins the battle!
2. Cripple the Elites- They are very hard to replace and losing them can be more painful than losing the battle.
3. Destroy the Troops - Troops hold objectives and they can't do that if they are dead!

Old Zogwort, ultimate troll?

Hello fellow boyz, I was recently reading the ork codex just for fun and read over Old Zogwort again. I have seen proposed lists using Ghaz, Grotsnik, and Wazdakka as HQs but never Zogwort. In fact, I don't think I ever see a Weirdboy in an ork list.

Now I know it is virtually impossible to make a competitive list using a Weirdboy/Warphead, just because you are giving up such precious other HQ options and spending a wad of points. That aside...

Zogwort comes in at 145 points so he is the cheapest of the unique HQs. He is 60 points more than a standard Warphead. For that extra 60 pts, you get +1 to toughness, +1 wound, +1 leadership, but you lose some stuff like all BS, -1 strength, -1 attack. Those losses don't really matter at all but the gains definitely help. The reason for that is, his wargrear Nest of Vipers which deals an additional D6 attacks at Initiative 4, and also stipulates that all of Zogworts attacks are poisoned therefore wounding on 2+. So that strength 3 has no meaning really, and the lower attack number on his profile doesn't either since you will always get at least 3 attacks and as many as 9 since he benefits from furious charge. BS never matters since his psychic ranged attacks auto-hit.

So on the charge he would have WS 5, Initiative 5, 4-9 attacks, all wounding on 2+. This is all amidst some various Psyker powers that can be really devastating, like generating a Waaagh!, giving his unit +1 attack, or two very good shooting attacks frazzle (blast, pinning, 24'', str 6 ap 3) and zzap (melta, 36'', str 10 ap 2). These combined make him sound pretty effective against MEQ. Mind you he is no Ghazkull, but for 145 pts that is pretty decent capability especially in CC.

My favorite part about him though, and the reason why I think he is a total troll and you could just throw a wrench in your opponents army, is his rule "Zogworts Curse". If an enemy IC is within 18'' of Zogwort, you can have a roll-off as a psychc power, and if you roll higher then that opponent's IC is turned into an angry Squig permanently! This would be absolutely hilarious against enemy lists that focus around a special IC, and I think just having Zogwort in a list to do something like that is grade A trollin'

I'm not sure how I would incorporate him into a list. A big boyz mob would guarantee fearless leadership, but a nobz squad would mean you could be hitting at Initiative 4 or better on the charge with the unit. Anyways, just something I was thinkin about. Your opinions, thoughts?

I am please to finally be able to say that the Russian Heavy Combat Armor is finally available.

I have them in both resin and Metal by the squad -- I also am considering making available just the body in metal or resin for converting -- see terminator conversion below

Right now a squad is 50 USD resin or metal -- and 12.50 for a single figure.

If I priced the body at 5.50 for a single or 25.00 for a set of 5 would that get your interest --

And yes I know the paint work below is poor -- if you want to buy a set paint them then send me photos to use I will not only refund you the price of minis but give you store credit towards next purchase.
I have given away many minis to people willing to paint and have yet to see anything so I don't send freebies out anymore I also cant afford what professional painters ask at this time.

Good for `5mm mech

Re: ShumaGorath's assertion in this thread
He's also in the most overpowered book GW has put out in a decade.

Also, see IG Armoured Company. Not really a book though. I also think the GK hysteria is uncalled for. If GK was as OP as everyone on the internet puts it out to be we'd probably have some different results in the competitive community.
Gray knights being half or more of the top tables in every major tourney since the book was released isn't good enough?

1 Rick Puig	19	23	23 65	Imperial Guard
2 Mark Billings	12	24	22 58	Grey Knights
4 Bill Hennessey	22	9	22 53	Dark Angels
3 Charles Peters	11	23	16 50	Grey Knights
5 Mattew Bennett	15	16	19 50	Grey Knights
3 Aaron Aleong	21	14	9 44	Grey Knights
In the ard boyz all four of those GK players were in the top six.

In the DaBoyz GT the grey knights scored consistently above curve in the actual gameplay section of the scoring criteria. They get nailed on soft scores as they're seen as a cheap army to play. If it were not a soft scored tourney they would have been the overall winners according to the results.

I can't see what the BFS players were playing on that link.

In the bugeater there was one GK player in the entire tourney.
So yeah.. Where's this GK domination? But this is a soft scored tourney so actual victories don't directly imply high placement.
Look at the top gold brackets. Mike played Guard, Ragnar played Chaos. That's 50% non-gk right there. Also, the bugeater proves my point. Also, if you remember they were the majority of the armies so were disproportionately represented.
Actually, it was. I picked 4 tournaments since April that I had ready links to from BoK.
No models of fat folks?

Alright, so my wife today challenged me to find a model for a character she's making. A larger to fat figured lady in armour. I figured that wouldn't be too hard, but currently cannot much blubber on the webs (unless you count when I typed 'fat model' into google's image search) and it kinda amused me. I know most miniatures are fantasy based and all, but even in fantasy you get the odd fat but strong character (or the fat, evil bad guy) so it seems weird that there are no models, or that they're so tucked away that ten whole minutes of google failed to find any.

And yet you can find the Wet Nurse... :D

2000 point Pedro & Sternguard Loadouts

Good Day Dakkites!

Wondering if I can get your thoughts on a concept I dreamt up recently, involving Pedro, a handful of Sternguard, and a tentative army list.
I'll not be including points (no codex handy), and it'll just be a rough draft of the army to-be, but in any case:

Pedro rides with 5 (more if I have the points) Assault Terminators (3X Th/SS, 2X DLC) in a LRC/LRR (whichever one, to taste). This is my deathstar.

There will be two identical flanks for the army, which will either run on either side of the deathstar (for obvious reasons), or form one stronger flank. Both flanks will consist of:

10 man Tac Squad, with a Flamer, MM, and a PF for sarge, mounted up in a rhino. Working closely with the rhino/tac, will be a Vindicator, and a HF/MM LandSpeeder.

So my real question comes in here, regarding the sternguard I'd like to field, so please, take a closer walk with me:

what about 2 six-man squads of sternguard, with something like 2 combi-flamer, 2 combi-melta, 2 Lascannon, and a PF on sarge. Both squads will be mounted up in... TL-LC Razorbacks, or Las/Plas razorbacks. I know the Lascannon is a topic of debate for some, but bear with me:

The idea here is for the sternguard to ride up to the nearest objective, and basically camp.
Between the razorback and the 2X Lascannons per squad, I've got a pretty reliable long range fire support, enough to pop the occasional transport most likely, maybe drop a wound on an MC. Between the PF, the SIA combi-flamers, and SIA combi-melta's, I've got a reliable way to at least challenge any average tank, horde, or Walker-type.

So check it out, I've got an (annoying) backfield unit that should be able to lay down real, relevant long-rage fire support all game. They ARE scoring, so they hold an objective, ideally one apiece. You'd be unwilling to fluff with them, because they're pretty well kitted out, and you'd have to plow through the rest of my army first anyways, more likely than not. And I've got 2 vindi's, a LR, at least 2 HF/MM speeders for you to consider, all of which are balls-to-the-wall gunning it to get 12" from your front line... what are the odds you'll start turn 1 dumping rounds at the seemingly harmless sternguard just loitering around waaay back there?

Whatever points wind up left, if any, would get dumped into Assault Terminators and Land Speeders, whichever wound up looking better on paper.

So anyways, how do you see this application of the Sternguard working out, could this be a practical adaptation of their more conventional (typically suicidal) uses? C/C is welcomed Dakkites, and feel free to comment on the army itself as well, anything helps!

Thanks All!

Does anyone know where the Syrian opposition is getting its weapons from?

There've been references to weapons being smuggled to Syria via Turkey and Lebanon. Who is supplying these weapons?

I can only think of a couple possibilities but have heard nothing to confirm or deny any supposition.

* Syrian expatriates/refugees in Turkey and Lebanon who have connections to the opposition.

* Arab league countries who support the sunni ethnic group that makes up a good part of the opposition.

*Nato countries buying soviet style weapons and funneling them to the opposition covertly much like they did in the soviet invasion of Afghanistan via Turkey (part of Nato) and Lebanon (neutral)

Also whilst we're on it. If, worst case scenario. Nato finds itself at war with both Syria and Iran. Would Russia and China do anything/could they do anything to prevent that turn of events in the military sense. my feeling is that both China and Russia know their conventional armies are no match for NATO and are also seperated geographically from the region without Mhe means to move troops there. Which limits them to a threat of nuclear action which could only lead to MAD. I also think both governments have a nest of internal problems that limits their action even more. Aside from selling weapons and political pressure at the UN I don't think they would be a real issue. The biggest worry for NATO would be if countries where the Muslim Brotherhood (Egypt/Tunisia) has to some extent came to power would side with Iran and their fellow muslims against a percieved Western crusade.

Blood Angels 2^5 list 1500 pts

I'm in the process of restarting my Blood Angels and have been perusing the interwebs heavily to get the lay of the land. I have to give a lot of credit to lkhero's blog on Blood Angels which is probably one of the best blog resources I have found for a starting player. He also gave me some good advice and helped me refine my ideas a lot with his formidable experience.

It's been actually quite hard to get information on 1500 lists because most of the gaming scene has shifted to larger games. We still do 1500 at our store to keep it quick, have trade-offs in army selection, and to handicap marines a bit. I still like the more skirmish feel of the game rather than huge battlefields but I understand that different sizes appeal to different individuals.

2^5 list:
Librarian w/Jump Pack (Shield and Rage)
Librarian w/Jump Pack (Shield and Rage)
Priest w/Jump Pack
Priest w/Jump Pack
10 ASM w/Jump Packs, 2 Meltaguns, and Powerfist
10 ASM w/Jump Packs, 2 Meltaguns, and Powerfist
5 ASM w/Meltagun and Power Weapon in Razorback w/Lascannon & Plasmagun
5 ASM w/Meltagun and Power Weapon in Razorback w/Lascannon & Plasmagun
Predator Auto/Las
Predator Auto/Las
Total: 1500

As you can see, there are 2 of every single unit out there. It just kind of worked out that way. It is also a hybrid of jump troops with vehicles. I really hope that it can work out and I’ve seen others have success with this hybrid approach. The hybrid feels more fun to play and more maneuverable which suits my play style and maybe helps balance the fact that the list is so symmetrical.

Each ASM Jump squad is led by a Librarian and Priest which hopefully should create a 6” 5+ cover save and FNP/FC bubble around it. All of my ASM in packs and even my vehicles initially will benefit from this cover save since two 6” circles tangentially-touching covers a huge area compared to one circle. Having 2 chances to cast Shield of Sanguinius is also nice in case there are hoods out there who usually have around a 40-50% chance of nullifying.

The vehicle formation could also be R P P R and thus protecting the Predator’s vulnerable side armor. The Razorback squads are designed to be midfield and versatile to support both the Predators backline fire and also move up to support the jump pack troops. The Power Weapon in the small squads hopefully makes them a more credible assault reserve. The small ASM squads are almost like the old min-max Lascannon/Plasma Tacs except with a min-max meltagun and power weapon. The other nice advantages of the list are that there are 30 models to objectives and also the list can be fully reserved with no footslogging or drop-podding.

Thoughts and ideas? I understand that this boring type of "cookie-cutter" list construction is not everyone’s cup of tea.

OctoberForce: A Halloween themed Space Marine army (loads of pics!)

Hey everyone, new guy here. I've recently caught the bug again, and have been painting a Dark Elf army for fantasy. But, the bug got worse and I decided it would be a fun project to completely repaint an old space marine army I painted when I was a kid. Oh my, what have I gotten myself into. But I want to do it while spending as little money as possible. I know the new kits are awesome, but I don't want my wallet to hate me too bad... :'(

I've got a random hodge-podge of old old guys, dating to the late 80s. Lots of beakies, including the original Rogue Trader plastic kit. I've got various other lead figures I bought back before the hobby was brought to its current standards and I was lucky to find anything at the one hobby shop in my city.

I've been using Pine-Sol to strip paint off the lead figures, and Simple Green to clean the plastic. My painting skills have gotten better since I was a teenager, and I also have quite a better set of tools and paints now, as well as patience. Back then, I would just slop paint on thickly, without even trying to thin it. Although I did try my best.

So here's a pic of what I'm working with, my whole army I managed to collect and paint from back in the day.

I was initially really into Dark Angels, then Blood Angels, then White Scars. I've played a few games with this force...and lost miserably! This time around, I'm going to buy some more tanks!

Here's my first squad, they're just going to be tactical marines and I've got 5 more or less done. I'm going all out this time, and naming each squad for maximum geekage. This one I've dubbed "primae."

The chapter I'm creating is going to feature a Jack-O-Lantern as their icon. Yeah not very characteristic of marines I know, but it does have the advantage of looking cool and being relatively easy to paint freehand. Not sure what I'll call them, I'm thinking either Halloween Marines or Octoberforce. :D

I'm going for a heavily weathered and war-torn, battle scarred look with these guys. I got out my Dremel and just went to town, gouging and scratching tear marks and battle damage, as well as bullet holes. Technically, with a date of 1987 on these lead figurines, they're by definition Venerable. ~8)

I'd love to hear any feedback and I'll be enjoying reading the other worklogs here!

Imperial Guard 1000pt army idea

After taking a few years out from gaming I'm back and wanted to collect an Imperial Guard army, which I've never previously tried. Going to start off with a nice sized 1000pt army list and then expand from that. Anyway let me know what you think, I based this on the idea of an Inquisitorial task force, maybe on a mission to exterminate a band of xenos scum :) Made up a new regiment for this with it's own back story which I might post later.

HQ
CCS -
Company Commander with power weapon and plasma pistol.
4 Vets equipped with 1 vox caster, 3lasguns and 1 plasma gun.
Entire squad equipped with carapace armour
110pts

TROOPS
1st Platoon

PCS -
Platoon Commander with laspistol and power fist.
4 guardsmen equipped with 1 vox caster, 1 flamer and 3 lasguns
55pts

Infantry squad 1 -
1 sergeant with bolt pistol.
9 guardsmen equipped with 1 vox caster, 1 grenade launcher, 1 autocannon and 6 lasguns
72pts

Infantry squad 2 -
1 sergeant with bolt pistol.
9 guardsmen equipped with 1 vox caster, 1 grenade launcher, 1 autocannon and 6 lasguns
72pts

Veterans squad -
1 Veteran Sergeant with power weapon.
9 Veterans armed with vox caster, 3 meltaguns and 6 lasguns.
Entire squad has carapace armour and Chimera transport with dozer blade and pintle-mounted storm bolter
220pts

Fast Attack -
Scout sentinel with autocannon, searchlight and hunter-killer missile
51pts

Heavy Support -
Leman Russ Battle Tank with hull mounted heavy bolter, sponson mounted heavy bolters, dozer blade and camo netting
Leman Russ Vanquisher with hull mounted lascannon, Knight Commander Pask and camo netting
420pts

Total - 1000pts

I realise that this army might be a little lacking in infantry, but I wanted to keep the idea of a small force of soldiers with armour support on a quick "search and destroy" type mission.
Also I know there isn't much love for the LR Vanquisher, but I really like the whole idea of a specialist "tank hunter".
Anyway any pointers would be greatly appreciated before I go out and buy my final force.

Cheers :)

Whitney Houston dead at 48.

http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/whitney-houston-dead-at-48-at-beverly-hilton-on-eve-of-grammys-1.3522942

Didn't see a topic on this.
LOS ANGELES - Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, died Saturday. She was 48.

Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen told reporters outside the Beverly Hilton that Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. in her room on the fourth floor of the hotel. Her body remained there and Beverly Hills detectives were investigating.

"There were no obvious signs of any criminal intent at this time," Rosen said.

PHOTOS: Whitney Houston through the years | Recent celebrity deaths

MORE: What's your favorite Whitney Houston song? | Recent obituaries

Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the cause of her death was unknown.

Houston's death came on the eve of music's biggest night — the Grammy Awards. It's a showcase where she once reigned, and her death was sure to cast a heavy pall on Sunday's ceremony.

Her longtime mentor Clive Davis was to hold his annual concert and dinner Saturday, and a representative of the show said it would proceed.

Houston was supposed to appear at the gala, and Davis had told The Associated Press that she would perhaps perform: "It's her favorite night of the year ... (so) who knows by the end of the evening," he said.

Houston had been at rehearsals for the show Thursday, coaching singers Brandy and Monica, according to a person who was at the event but was not authorized to speak publicly about it. The person said Houston looked disheveled, was sweating profusely and liquor and cigarettes could be smelled on her breath.

Two days ago, she performed at a pre-Grammy party with singer Kelly Price.

Rosen said police received a 911 call from hotel security about Houston at 3:43 p.m. Saturday, and paramedics were already at the hotel because of a Grammy party. Paramedics unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate the singer, the lieutenant said.

The Rev. Al Sharpton said he would call for a national prayer Sunday morning during a service at Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles.

"The morning of the Grammys, the world should pause and pray for the memory of a gifted songbird," Sharpton said in a written statement.

At her peak, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world's best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale."

She had the perfect voice and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.

She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.

But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.

"The biggest devil is me. I'm either my best friend or my worst enemy," Houston told ABC's Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.

It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.

She seemed to be born into greatness. She was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.

Houston first started singing in the church as a child. In her teens, she sang backup for Chaka Khan, Jermaine Jackson and others, in addition to modeling. It was around that time when music mogul Clive Davis first heard Houston perform.

"The time that I first saw her singing in her mother's act in a club ... it was such a stunning impact," Davis told "Good Morning America."

"To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine," he added.

Before long, the rest of the country would feel it, too. Houston made her album debut in 1985 with "Whitney Houston," which sold millions and spawned hit after hit. "Saving All My Love for You" brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal. "How Will I Know," ''You Give Good Love" and "The Greatest Love of All" also became hit singles.

Another multiplatinum album, "Whitney," came out in 1987 and included hits like "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."

The New York Times wrote that Houston "possesses one of her generation's most powerful gospel-trained voices, but she eschews many of the churchier mannerisms of her forerunners. She uses ornamental gospel phrasing only sparingly, and instead of projecting an earthy, tearful vulnerability, communicates cool self-assurance and strength, building pop ballads to majestic, sustained peaks of intensity."

Her decision not to follow the more soulful inflections of singers like Franklin drew criticism by some who saw her as playing down her black roots to go pop and reach white audiences. The criticism would become a constant refrain through much of her career. She was even booed during the "Soul Train Awards" in 1989.

"Sometimes it gets down to that, you know?" she told Katie Couric in 1996. "You're not black enough for them. I don't know. You're not R&B enough. You're very pop. The white audience has taken you away from them."

Some saw her 1992 marriage to former New Edition member and soul crooner Bobby Brown as an attempt to refute those critics. It seemed to be an odd union; she was seen as pop's pure princess while he had a bad-boy image, and already had children of his own. (The couple had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in 1993.) Over the years, he would be arrested several times, on charges ranging from DUI to failure to pay child support.

But Houston said their true personalities were not as far apart as people may have believed.

"When you love, you love. I mean, do you stop loving somebody because you have different images? You know, Bobby and I basically come from the same place," she told Rolling Stone in 1993. "You see somebody, and you deal with their image, that's their image. It's part of them, it's not the whole picture. I am not always in a sequined gown. I am nobody's angel. I can get down and dirty. I can get raunchy."

It would take several years, however, for the public to see that side of Houston. Her moving 1991 rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl, amid the first Gulf War, set a new standard and once again reaffirmed her as America's sweetheart.

In 1992, she became a star in the acting world with "The Bodyguard." Despite mixed reviews, the story of a singer (Houston) guarded by a former Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) was an international success.

It also gave her perhaps her most memorable hit: a searing, stunning rendition of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," which sat atop the charts for weeks. It was Grammy's record of the year and best female pop vocal, and the "Bodyguard" soundtrack was named album of the year.

She returned to the big screen in 1995-96 with "Waiting to Exhale" and "The Preacher's Wife." Both spawned soundtrack albums, and another hit studio album, "My Love Is Your Love," in 1998, brought her a Grammy for best female R&B vocal for the cut "It's Not Right But It's Okay."

But during these career and personal highs, Houston was using drugs. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2010, she said by the time "The Preacher's Wife" was released, "(doing drugs) was an everyday thing. ... I would do my work, but after I did my work, for a whole year or two, it was every day. ... I wasn't happy by that point in time. I was losing myself."

In the interview, Houston blamed her rocky marriage to Brown, which included a charge of domestic abuse against Brown in 1993. They divorced in 2007.

Houston would go to rehab twice before she would declare herself drug-free to Winfrey in 2010. But in the interim, there were missed concert dates, a stop at an airport due to drugs, and public meltdowns.

She was so startlingly thin during a 2001 Michael Jackson tribute concert that rumors spread she had died the next day. Her crude behavior and jittery appearance on Brown's reality show, "Being Bobby Brown," was an example of her sad decline. Her Sawyer interview, where she declared "crack is whack," was often parodied. She dropped out of the spotlight for a few years.

Houston staged what seemed to be a successful comeback with the 2009 album "I Look To You." The album debuted on the top of the charts, and would eventually go platinum.

Things soon fell apart. A concert to promote the album on "Good Morning America" went awry as Houston's voice sounded ragged and off-key. She blamed an interview with Winfrey for straining her voice.

A world tour launched overseas, however, only confirmed suspicions that Houston had lost her treasured gift, as she failed to hit notes and left many fans unimpressed; some walked out. Canceled concert dates raised speculation that she may have been abusing drugs, but she denied those claims and said she was in great shape, blaming illness for cancellations.
