Here I go with my next project, in between throwing Yidhra in the bin, finalising rusty nuts the killdo kannon, painting a Pythia for my wifes birthday, if I get it done, and fantasizing about my mega-cheesy Iron Warriors army, I've decided to start on the Iron Warriors and stop dreaming about it....

And not paint the balloon just yet....

Coz I don't want to....so nyeh nyeh nyeh

You might want to look at some battletech mech drawings/ pictures of clan mechs. they usually have the same type of legs so you might get some ideas there

I was disgusted with how my progress went so I've put it on hold for now. I threw out my sculpt coz it was pretty horrendous, I'll keep looking for appropriate stuff and I still have the concept art. I still love that.

WOTW tripod idea...hmmm now that's pretty cool. I'll have that as some food for thought...

How tall is that monstrosity? It screams Iron Warrior (and probably other, more obscene things too), really captured the demonic engine of doom look. Do you have pics of it next to marines, or other models? What I´m thinking is, would it be big enough for a titan, or are you using it in other more creative ways?

It's half the height of my steam stompa roughly, so it's not big enough to be a titan, just an extra large defiler.

As to the vindicator, yeah I want it to walk, I want to try and get most of the vehicles in various stages of locomotion other than the standard....

It might look cool as a quadroped, only with the giant cannon underslung from the body. So longish type spider legs, with a cannon wrapped under like a bee or ant stinging. It would make it look like it had short range, but the ability to shoot down at dug in targets, which is pretty much the Vindicator's goal.

Are you trying to avoid having it be mistaken for a Defiler/Dreadnought? If you don't mind it being reminiscent of the former, you could design it to look like a crab with stubby legs holding a squad body that houses just the giant cannon. To really get the feeling of a massive recoil across, you could have the crab rocked back with it's rear most legs dug into the ground as though it just fired a tremendous shot that required bracing and drove the legs into the soil. Sort of like WW2 towed anti-tank guns.

Well guys, I've been a bit slow on the progress of this one for a couple reasons - 1 is I'm a bit creatively burnt out after the steam stompa....takes me a week or two to get over such big projects; 2 I've been a bit stumped as to how to begin the army - admittedly I probably should have started with the easier stuff but I am DETERMINED to start with the scratch vindie/defiler coz, well, with the apocalypse rules I'll need three if I can take them as a linebreaker squadron.

So I've been playing around with brainmatter trying to get something working upstairs and here's a concept I started on to see if it might work...

It's ok, but the footprint is too big, I'd have to rework that... This was before I stumbled across some steampunk-esque stuff and found this one that I think is actually the idea I had, just fleshed out better:

The idea on this one is to make the central body sorta like one of the current vindicators, but as if they had mutated like they'd come into contact with the allspark (Transformers reference), but not as complex as they are in the movie obviously.

Another variation that I will incorporate is creating a 3 toed stability foot, 1 toe forward, 2 long toes sorta back and reinforced to give it the appearance it can actually fire it's cannon without flipping for an olympic medal.

Then I found this one-

Which looks almost like they drew it after seeing my defiler, the good thing is I can use this as a guide to building a second defiler, and to make it look different enough from the first to make them more interesting as a tag team deal.

And this tank is just TOOOO beefy to ignore:

I might make a huge one of these as a type of chaos or ork battle fortress. Either way it would work I reckon.

First of all I'd like to say I love your work.

I've followed a few of your projects. My personal favourite being your defiler. The build, the detail and the paint job were fantastic.

I'd agree with you on your last couple of pics. The last one I'd go for with Orks. Even the pic looks Orky.

As for your Vindi, the main considerations are:

1 - Keeping all your vehicles 2 legged or more. To tie in with your Defiler.

2 - If your keeping your vehicles to roughly the same profiles (height, width, length etc) as their GW counterparts. This could be useful when your trying to hide them in game.

I don't think 2 is too big an issue for you as your defiler doesn't conform to this blueprint.

As much as I think the 3 legged version has potential, I'd go with something that has four legs.

You could make each leg connect to the box section as the body (suitably ornate) then have the turret, that you've already built, on top.

Alternatively you could have a 4 legged cannon. I seem to remember a WFB chas cannon that would be suitably ornate for this.

Then again you could go with whatever you feel (your previous builds prove you've a knack for this sort of thing).

Just throwing my Ideas in the works.

ROIGHT! Boys and girls, finally got some action going on this army. I've started on the first vindicator walker, and since it's a sorta cross with a vindicator and a defiler maybe it should be called "Vin Diesel"? lol

The legs have been started and with these I have used some balsa wood to help build up the general shape of them before covering them in card to improve the shape.

Here's the progress:

I need to enlarge the foot because the leg cowling is too large for it, but other than that I'm pretty happy with how they are turning out. As a bit of a pleasant surprise they're looking kinda like mini warhound legs...maybe I'll carry that theme through a little further.

Ok I've been playing around with the legs today and this is where I got. They're almost done, I just need to add some chaos glyphs and stuff to bring it into line with the iconography once I've done the rest of the building. Trouble I'm having is with building the upper section, I built a big part somewhat the same as the pic but I don't like how it's turning out.

I then played around with adding the oversized turret I built previously and, to tell the truth, I kinda like it. I just need to rebuild the feet again and make them large to improve the proportions. Anyways, let me know what you reckon, I'm a bit stuck.....

Here's some more of the bizzo, I've been playing around with some bits and pieces I have lying around, including this scratch turret I made ages ago for a card leman. I think it looks better but it makes it look like a "chickendicator" instead of a vindicator.

Which leads me to a new thought...lol...the other idea I have for a vindicator stand in is the 4 legged crawling vindicator with a ball for the central cab that is real spikey and panelled....making it the Pindicator...

And then you'll see in one of these new pics the newly named "Fat headed dictator" vindicator tank. But it's more orky so I may be forced to convert that one to orkdom....

Comments are welcome, I'm tending toward the chickendicator and half considering the fat headed tank as a second vindie in traditional tank form.

My idea for the tanks are they are variations of the vindicator that the Iron Warriors were experimenting with to make them more effective in a battlefield role. They still work like the standard vindies, and they all count as having the usual equipment plus daemonic infestation or whatever it is now, hence the lack of pilot space on Chickenlips. Probably will get havocs as well, but I don't know if it's worth it since they can't fire them anyways, unless someone blows off the main cannons. I suppose if they get neutered that way the havocs aren't a bad backup plan....

I like both options (in terms of the walker-head), though I think the smaller one seems nicer. The bigger one reminds me of the big robot from Robocop.

Ok, I've compromised on the head. I've kept the same shape, rebuilt it and resized the second head. Here are some pics for you:

I like it a lot better this size, I was almost gonna just leave it chicken style but now I'm happy with the way it looks now.

I didn't see the flares till now...lol...don't worry I'll GS them a bit yet, they'll still keep the same shape but they'll be cracked and warped and buckled to look different yet.

My only suggestion... how about some co-axil autoguns or bolters under the 'chin' or on the sides of the turret.

But one thing I would like to do for apocalypse, if the rules are there, is a twin linked Vulcan Mega-BolterRange: 60? Str6 AP3 Heavy 15 a mech equipped with that....

Sorry, I was a bit vague coz I typed it so quick...

What I meant was I'm not putting any additional weapons on them coz vindicators will get targetted pretty heavily, most people will make sure they go down so extra guns are extra points I couldn't be bothered forkin out for. The chaos vindies can take either a twin linked bolter, a havoc or a combi-weapon as well as the main cannon, but I'll save the points for elsewhere.

Thanks for the comments though, I'll be doing more work on them tomorrow. The intention is to make three in total so i think I'll start that on the morrow.

Here's todays udpate. Haven't been well and I haven't had much inspiration for the CCW's on the dread. I want this to be a 2 ccw dread with a heavy flamer and a twinlinked bolter, but I have yet to develop the ccw's so that I like them...

Been stuffing around with ideas and they look stoopid. Feel free to give me some ideas, I'm at a loss at the moment.

At least there are rivets in this update...lol

If you're talking about some sort of VDR rules in Apoc, I got to look at it the other day and I didn't see any indication of a VDR anywhere in the book. Considering how big the VDR rules are I'm doubtful I just missed it.

That said, I'm sure people will be open to wacky house rules in Apoc anyway.

people will see this and pretty much have their jaws drop and forget things like strict rules because it will be awesome to play with such a walker on the table,

it is really starting to look good, can't wait to see the fully green-stuffed and embelished version as it will be extremely good!

Rightio, I'm pretty happy with the dread now. I decided to go with the power flail design and boy, it turned out heaps better than I thought. I need to learn to trust my first impressions...

I feel that I've gotten it to the point where if I add too much more it'll be out of aesthetic balance, but feel free to give me new ideas that will help cinch it up another notch in how it looks. Enough talk, onto le pikachus:

Easily, the best power flail design I have seen on any chaos dreadnought. The draped chains ever so nonchalantly over the chaos symbol is keen as well.

As far as the guitar strings. What do you use to bend them at such angles? It usually takes me a bit of time to work with the guitar wire to get it the shape I want, due to the tensile properties.

Is it a simple "two pairs of pliers, son. Dont poke your eye out" type of thing, or more work than that?

Some of the angles in the wire are so nice, it looks like you used a sheet metal "finger break" on them.

Thanks guys I surprised myself a bit on how it turned out coz I was a bit suspicious as to how it would look. I even did a photoshop mock up and it looked decent then too so I took the plunge! Glad it worked out, now I can go back to the vindicator and the GS work I have to do on it. After I model in the lava bubbles on the base of course...

[edit] Sorry Hellfury, I meant to say about the bending, there is no trick or special smoke and mirrors or anything. I just used a pair of cutters to hold the wire and then bent them by hand. The wires are guitar string and mild steel. The guitar strings were the most compliant, but the mild steel was a bit tougher, you'll see there are a few overly bendy bits that I meant to have more angle in them.

I think the angles look so nice is because I hid the bend under rolled thin solder. That gives it more of an angular look than if I hadn't done that.

@Migsula: The bases are cork. Simple old placemats I bought from a shop for their large corky properties. Most of my large built up bases are built up on layers of the same type of cork. Then I just dig at it with a sharp tool and glue sand over any weird looking bits...

Ok, here's the little bit of work done today. I might get some more done this weekend as I'm keen to get this vindie done, I want to see how it turns out in full before I decide if I'll make three based on the same design or not.

It's had some SRT (spike removal therapy) done on it because a few people have said there are too many and most importantly - my wife agrees... my most honest critic and my greatest support

Here's the pics:

I plan on transferring the infestation over the legs as well, and select other parts, but not as much as on the turret. I'm thinking it's looking a bit nurgle...hmm

One thing I realise, though, it needs rivets to make it look like it's actually coming toward completion.

That is looking great, especially the dread. I do have a few questions.

One how do you make the rivets?

Two how did you switch the front plates next to the head?

Finally, what did you use for the right CC arm, just like a BA furioso?

1 The rivets are easy, it really depends on what I am doing. For the dread, because I mainly need little tiny ones, I slice off pieces of really thin rod, some about 1mm and .75mm. Then once I have a pile, I'll make a small pool of superglue, pick up each rivet with the tip of a sharp scalpel/cutting blade and dip each rivet in superglue before gluing them in place. You can also use white glue/elmers glue/pva glue for this but be careful coz it takes heaps longer to dry so you'll knock them off if you don't wait till some of it's dry.

2 I switched the plates by cutting the entire front plate into 3 pieces using a stiff bladed craft saw

3 The right arm of the dread was scratchbuilt out of card and foamboard. A small metal piece was cut off the second CCW to make up the top hinge section of the 2nd ccw arm you get with the dread and the flails were pinned into that.

I'm not a fan of this particular design - but still reserve the right to change my mind when you finish it. It just looks more chikeny than formidable to me in comparison to the dread and defiler of yours. I would make the "heel" parts of the feet much more robust looking and bigger to give sense of support. Also something to consider when detailing would be to build some nice piping and mechanism to alleviate the recoil of the huge gun.

If you wanted to go a real world route with this, You could try creating a 'dampener' or two on the outside of the gun tube itself. Basically it's just a small enclosed recoil device that can soak up huge amounts of the guns recoil.

Here's a small example of what i'm talking about:

See that small git just behind that first support, the little cylinder? That's the dampener. Granted this is a very small caliber compared to what you're modeling, but something similar can help the overall feel of the gun. I think that thing accounts for about 50-75% of the recoil if I remember anything from the years I spent with it >.>...

Ok I've done some more work on this today, which I don't normally do on a friday but today was special.

Here's some pics of my progress:

I'm considering removing one of the spiky leg plates completely and replacing it with a heavily plated one, making it one spiky and one plated. I'm trying to think of how to do it and still make it work aesthetically, because the infestation is going beyond what I originally intended. Bet some chaos general has heard that more often than I have.

Anyways, any comments or ideas or thoughts on that would be awesome. I want to make this thing work in well with the rest of the army, and going overboard with infestation kinda isn't going to fit that well....

Ok, I've made some mods to the beast and I've started doing some extra work on it. Now I'm having trouble working out what to do *BLING* wise. Here are a few pics, lemme know which ones you like or which ones you reckon would work best - or even any suggestions are welcome, since this isn't an easy point on the model.

As to the mods, I've brought the legs a bit closer together and mounted them a bit higher, it seems to improve the overall aesthetic balance. But some ideas to help me get past this roadblock would be really welcome

IMO less is more in this case. Anyone can throw on a bunch of chains, but not everyone can do an awesome scratchbuild like you've done, so why obscure it? My votes goes to small bling, and even less than what you've got there now. I think the pattern of the chains on the leg is kind of funky, too.

Rightio, I've done some more work on the chains and I'm pretty happy with them. A couple of the lengths look a little weird but they'll do for now. And hooks for the ends, that's definitely next. It's nearly done, and soon I'll be anchoring it to the base.

Great work as always.

I loved the Dreadnought and thought it was very solidly done.

My only crit for this would be the marine hand. It looks out of place and amateur in execution comapred to the 5 star quality of the rest of this mini. I'd lose the holding the bolter hand or the entire arm completely I really don't think its necessary.

Let the amazing model speak for itself.

I was thinking, if you wanted to use the fat head still, a defiler/vindicator with it's legs mounted to the top of the fathead could look cool. I am picturing looking at a bulldog from head on so you can't see it's rear legs, and it's head is lowered while snarling. All you see is scary head and huge shoulders with powerful legs.

The chicken walker looks great though, and the chaos dreadnaught is how they SHOULD look. GW needs to send you a job offer, or at least pay homage to this thread...

Yeah, that's how that dread was supposed to look. But it's really hard to cast those arms. I reckon they would have to make ten little cast arms which sounds ok to me, but it'd probably be a nightmare to execute.

I don't think I'm ready for any kind of job with a company like that though...lol. My sculpting is pretty ordinary...actually pretty crap...but I can build things out of stuff that already exists. Thanks for the compliment though.

I don't know man, your scratch builds are fantastic. Let someone else figure how to make them into a model; you seem to have a great notion of how it should look and function. GW could use some help designing their war machines in general, and you seem to have a masterful hand at that.

Here's my current progress - the beginning of the troops. This mean ass dude is based on a standard marine which I had bits of lying around, so I took the liberty of convincing him to deny his loyalist creed. Took me a little while but he's mostly there. Tomorrow we should see the final scerics of his being devoured by chaos... muahahahahaha!

Heres what I got done today, just a little coz I had to do other stuff as well, so I didn't get to finish everything I wanted to. Oh well.

The dread looks great, good job on it. Not big fan of the vindicator, design is bit off from rest of the chaos stuff, but I'll wait to see it painted. Marines look great, lots of rich details added. Keep em coming.

Well I've made a bit of progress today. I only really completed the aspiring champ and then got bored with converting loyalist to rebels so I cleaned off the parts from all the sprues ready to start assembling the standard chaos marine bodies. Only for chaos space marines, no termies or other types. It turns out I'll have almost 40 marines in the end, which is pretty cool. I didn't expect to have that many in the end so I'm pretty happy.

Then after I finish all the termies I should end up with 9 in total.

SO! When I get to the end of the assembly I should have:

38 Marines, Champs and Lord
9 Terminators
3 Vindicators
3 Defilers

Maybe I'll do 3-4 Rhinos and if I go TOTALLY insane, I might go to a superheavy like a titan or something. Or if my bro goes and sees a baneblade it might be time for one of those...

Here's some pics of what I did today:

I really like how he turned out, it's better than I expected that's for sure! His kit out is power fist (represented by the servo arm) and combi melta. My idea for the army is incredibly shooty, everything taking heavy a$$ weapons and the like. It won't have a good deal of close combat, but the idea is that most things should be kept at arms length.

That's the plan, anyway. I expect things to go south though. They always do.

You're absolutely right...I just couldn't figure out a way to keep the pose and the gun believable. I could change it for a bolt pistol and then holster/sling the combi weapon, but I wanted to leave him with only one gun... hmmm

Sure, looking forward to seeing it.

Migs means making your marines look more like the marines in the art (current codex), i.e., hulking and towering over mortal men. Look at Migs Cresent Guard and Hammer's WIP shots of his Ultras for some ideas how to do it. For the extreme, look up Yuri's work.

I think their efforts have made some extremely nice looking models, but to be honest, I am fine with "normal" marines too. The alternative means asking everyone to rescale every model in their army...

I've finally finished the base troops for the army. All based and ready for undercoat. Next in the list is to make up the terminators. I have 6 on sprue and 4 old school ones to convert to more current style models. If they don't turn out I'll just convert the old school termies to something else, maybe obliterators instead...

In the end, I should have 3 Defilers, 3 Vindicators, 1 Dread, 10 termies, 36 Troops and a juiced Lord. Maybe I will add 3 rhinos and 1 razorback to that mix.

Well it seems like the general consensus is to build a Chaos Baneblade - I'll hold off on that for the moment though, because I might build something walkerish with the baneblade armament...

But today...

I've started on the terminators, and I have a total of 4 old style termies that I'm converting and updating so that I have enough to bring the squad up to ten. I'm also using the Chaos Terminator Lord/Sorceror sprues to make a standard termie, and to add in some of extras to a general detailing of the rest.

Anyone got any thoughts on armament? I'm thinking of equipping 1 with the reaper, 1 or 2 with heavy flamers, 3 with lightning claws and the rest with the standard power weapon/twin linked bolter combo. Either that, or I'll just do three with power claws, 3 with power fists, and 4 with power weapons. Or I'll go with mainly bolters and combi-bolters. Or I'll go 3 power claws and the rest standard. Or I'll shut up and wait for ideas... smile.gif

They're mainly to be part of the back-line to protect the tanks from assault, or to distract people from eating my tanks with a dash of salt.

Terminators can and should be used quite offensively to put pressure on enemy and get their points back. Looking for areas with lack of ap2 to operate.

As for the armnament, first priority is as many reapers as you get to give them long range teeth and a few LCs and CFsts in there to make them extra infantry and tank killing tools in hth.

I was thinking something like that. It's still in the works, and I'm using what models I have and haven't yet worked out exackery how I want it running on the field. I usually use run in and smack em armies so I'm trying for something a little different with this one. Sit back and smack em.

As to the reapers, I was actually thinking of that, 2 squads of 3 with a reaper each and one squad of 4 with one. Not necessarily used in the army just modelled that way...and who knows, I got apocalypse so I can go lotsa lotsa points so the termies CAN fit in easily

As it turns out now a friend of my slapped me with this obvious nugget of wisdom - magnets. Damn it was so obvious and I still didn't see it! magnets are my friend.

Well, after finally getting unkeisterific (the sitting on of) I finally got some more action on the termies. I thought that magnets was such a good idea, I sat around thinking about how I could make it work, really I did. And if the models were all standard terminators out of the box (chaos ones I mean) then I probably could've pulled it off.

Problem is, roughly half need full conversions, so I'm going to end up with a nice mix of types, 4 twin linked bolters, 3 LC and 3 heavy weapons (1 reaper and 2 flamers) and that will do me. I might add a combi bolter in the mix but we'll see.

Enough ramble and onto the pics:

I wasn't intending on doing any with bare heads, but the one in the pic is kinda armoured...with those metal bands going over his cranium and all, so I thought it would fit. It looks pretty nice, one of my fav bare heads in the mix.

I've finally constructed all the termies, so they are done. Based and such, you can all see the PVA lava floe as it has just been applied before photography. One thing I have to say, the new chaos terminators are NICE - it was real hard trying to match in the old ones sufficiently with the new. And I'm not entirely convinced I did that well, but they're ok.

Now. Here's my dilemma. I didn't start with the idea to make a defiler like this. In fact, I wanted to make a variation of the Ripley. I tried but all that happened was my imagination had other ideas...bast@rd!

Anyways, this was what I started with to try and make a variation on the torso I made for Ripley, so that I could start a new beast of uber bang bang death:

Minus the tentacles sprouting from beneath it, of course

Then I ended up with this:

And finally, because a close combat defiler needs one cannon, I tried this:

With no intention of building a redback defiler...and here's what I get. Evil tentacled spider octopus. Lemme know what you think, although it'll be nearly impossible to disassemble at this juncture, I can do other stuff with it to make it a bit different. Ideas are definitely welcome.

Funny thing is, in real life it looks pretty cool, but in the pics I'm a little "meh" about it...

Not for this one, I've tooled this defiler to be a close combat variant. In the new rules you can swap all weapons, except the cannon, for a close combat attachment, so this has essentially 4 dreadnought CCW and the cannon. 5 attacks and fleet! noice...

I've removed the turret, because that was the main thing that was bugging me about the thing and added an underslung cannon. It's not quite as large but it still serves - it can be some kind of experimental chaos plasma blast cannon or something fluffwise - but it will still do the defiler cannon thing.

Well I've finished based and finalised the construction of the Black Widow pattern Fast assault defiler, with new improved stabby tentacle ends and hot lava base to match!

We haven't had power here for like 6 hours so I'm doing a quick post before I go to bed. Here's the pics, and I've started on the construction of upright defiler number 2. I'm considering arming the second with twin linked lascannons and either twin linked flamer or havoc launcher. Haven't decided totally yet. I think another ccw would probably be better but I'll work that out as I go...

Keep in mind that the concept pic idea is simply a rough idea of how some of it will work. The main sections I will be using are the arms and partially the legs and some of the body plating. Other than that it's going to be more a variant of the ripley than an entirely new pattern...

Well, since I haven't started painting yet, I've started Ripleys twin sister, the clone with the alien child within! Yeah, that's a cool idea, chained within the belly of this beast lies a daemonically possessed alien host...mwahahahhaahahahah!!!

Ahem...anyways...

Have a look at these pics, the main complaint I had about Ripley was the legs seemed a little weedy. Here's an attempt at making them look a bit bulkier, although just keep in mind this is not the final pose, it's all bluetacked (oh god I HATE getting bluetack out of models!) in place to give me the impression I want.

Here's the box I begin with. This box is the whole of the bits I have set aside to draw upon for the second upright defiler:

I find it really hard to copy the Ripley because I want the second to have a similar feel but it's own individuality. You know, like how Ripley original had normal humanity and Ripley clone had acid blood, black fingernails and crazy wild insane behaviour?

Well, lets see if we can capture some of that...hmm...I think that's all captured in Ripley 1...doh!

Heh. mostly the spider Lemming. The Bipedal thing is always neat, but the spider is spot on awesome.

Perhaps a good way to go with the Ripley 2 is a more organic look, perhaps an almost Nurgle-esque level of demonic possession. More skin and bio looking parts fused with the machine. Or perhaps more overt use of humans wired into it, either as fire control (sort of uber servitors) or in little glass pods off the shoulders used for power. Something like that might set it apart a bit from it's big sister while still maintaining the techno-monster look you are so admirably creating.

I've been looking at this thing all arvo and I can't get started or any fresh ideas...even with the concept which indicates I've got a bit of creative block. To help alleviate this and waste no more time, I've decided to simply stick to the Ripley design and just do the weapon variations and maybe a different styled CCW instead. Save the monsterbot for another project at another time...

The black things on the shoulders are wheels off a Crushgear toy. I got some real cheap a while ago, since they're such a crap idea, but great for some conversion ideas...

Both of the arms are actually the same size as the legs, and just full Defiler claws. It's just coz it's hanging and the angle of the shot that makes them look that long. It's ok anyways, I think it's kinda funky with the arms like this, but I'm rebuilding it Ripley-esque instead. It's easier that way and I don't wanna burn myself out creatively on this army. I did that with my 3.5k of orks and now I still can't get back to painting them!!!

I like the Heavy Mantis arm look, A lot. Perhaps something Insectoid for the head, ala Nurgle Marines or 80's Decepticon Transformers.

Actually, I think it has potential. I would hunch it forward a bit, with one of the claws on the ground. I am thinking sort of a gorilla sort of look. Then for the battle cannon head, build a wolfish skull around it, with the cannon coming out of the mouth. Then instead of it being at a roughly 90 degree angle from the chest, have it pointing forward off a stocky neck attached to the now ~45 degree torso.

Might work.

I like it. Much more so than the chicken design that wasn't my cup of tea. The arms are akward, but if they are posed more aggressively "the wrongness" of the joints is very chaose and possible good as a consequence. Yeah. I think I like it. I say go for it.

I've been playing around with this and here is a cannon stand in I'm working on. The plan is to make it like a huge rate of fire minigun style weapon with explosive shells, that will count as a defiler cannon in all ways. I am going to replace the current barrels with an assault cannon style set with some shielding and other differences.

I think I'll go with the arm mounted idea instead of the shoulder mounted, but have a look at the two designs and let me know what you reckon.

I think the shoulder is ok, but in the pics the arm mounted one grabs me more. I like how the cannon is coming along though, the details are finally getting easier on this part...

Well, since everyone is clamoring for my attention and dying in droves because I haven't updated this log in ...4days... I guess I'd better show something.

ANYHOO! Back to reality - I've decided I hate working on this defiler and the sooner it's finished the better. SO! That means that the job has been finished, no questions asked coz I couldn't be AR$ED to do any more conversion work on it. This will do I think. So happy or not, this is what it is! I tried adding chains but I couldn't do anything I was happy with , so it's another chainless beast. But it is very spikey. Very spikey and trophied (not atrophied) is good.

I figured the head wouldn't be too bad on this one, and I do like how it works, although I WILL have to name it Conan the Destroyer (Destroyer for short) given it's massive pinhead look.

The final fitout of this one is Defiler cannon, Twin linked Lascannons and Havoc Launcher. For those hankerin for a shoulder mounted gun, there it is! For those yearning for a chest mounted weapon, there be ye lasers!

It ties in really well with ripley, especially with all that spikey-goodness. Plenty of similarities, as well as differences in those two defilers.
the pose is more static than ripleys, but the head makes it work well. looks like hes jus lookin for what to destroy next.

I hate the head. If it were scaled up to maybe half again as big, it might not be bad, but a pin head on a giant machine like that just looks wierd. I really like how Ripley doesn't have a head as such, more of just a focal point area in the chest. I think that perhaps the Ripley two would look better if the head were set down into the chest, sort of like how terminator armor works. Or if it had a bigger head. Or no head.

In otherwords, everything is awesome. Except the head.

Yeah, I knew some people would feel a bit that way. I wanted to upscale it but like I say, I'm tired of working on it now so the head stays. I don't hate it myself, I just wish I could get a bigger one without spending umpteen hours on it, coz this defiler is starting to bore me a bit. And if I spend more time on it, I might get sick of the entire army and we don't want that!!

Ripley took me about 50 odd hours, Conan took me about 20. In both instances I spent a part of that just trying to design the arms...sometimes it's a pain in the royal rectal to scratchbuild some of these things coz you gotta start with nothing, design it and then come fit it out so it looks cool...

Man, go to Wal-Mart, enter the toy section, find some random He-Man figure or something, buy it, decapitate it, send me the receipt with a picture of the new head attached, and I will send you cash to cover it. The little tiny head just looks comical on the giant body.
Sure, maybe a fantastic paint job will pull it all together, but still, I keep getting that song about a witch doctor shrinking heads going through mine, and since I can't remember it clearly, it is peeling back the thin skin of reality that surrounds my consciousness.

Walmart would be an INCREDIBLY long trip for me...I'm in Australia and there ain't no such animal here! Although I will keep in mind what kind of heads there are around that I might use for the defiler. We'll see what turns up.

Here's what I've done today, just used the defiler leftovers and made a little Vindicator walker number 2.

It'll do the job and it's not too bad. I almost converted it to another CC defiler, but I'll keep it as a possessed vindicator. Roughly the same points cost anyways...

I love the arachnid feel of the defilers. I really think that adds to the disturbing nature of them, and not just because I don't like spiders.

Bonus points if you replace the head with a wallaby skull!

Well, in case you guys thought I was dead or sick of this thread or both, I thought I'd give you an update for where I'm up to at the moment.

I must say, I'm thoroughly sick of working on walker, I spent most of Monday trying to model a mini warhound style beast for the 3rd in the walkie vindicator sequence, and just packed it in. I've worn that puppy out.

So now, to link it a bit with the baneblade I'll be packing into the box I have built a variant vindicator tank, which I made out of the big head and the card leman russ on the left of the pic:

On the side and on the front of the model you'll notice big green blobs, these are amorphous eyes protruding from the shell of the beast demonstrating how the daemonic host sees...through the cracks in the sides of the vehicle caused by it trying to burst through...

The angling on the cannon looks a little weird. Even if the cannon proper is going to point straight forward, the mounting ought to be such that it allows a higher angle shot. The way it is now, it seems designed to allow the tank to fire a shell right into the ground in front of it, and I don't know why it would want to do that.

That's probably the angle of the shot, it's not actually that extreme. It has a slight upward angle to it. Truth be told, it really only needs 24" range anyways, which wouldn't need a whole lot of angle...

Well, I don't think the final 2 vindicators are amazing but who cares, they're good enough for my frazzled creative glands... All I really need area a few more of the chaos spikey bits from spikey vehicle sprues to finish it but I couldn't be bothered chasing any up...oh well...it still does the job.

Ok, well this isn't much of a blog post, but it's an indication of my success with my shortcut attempts!

Here are the problems I faced using silver undercoat:

1. Loss of details - metallic spray would be thicker in my mind
2. Gloss only available - getting the paint to stick
3. Affecting other paint going over it - enamel (shouldn't be an issue) and metallic (shining through)

So I have had success in all three areas!

1. Loss of detail - dulux silver is fine, just don't spray too much and it covers BETTER than white or black undercoat due to the paint pigmentation and it needs less paint
2. Add more detergent than I normally do to destroy the surface tension. This is only really necessary for the first couple of layers to get the paint something to adhere to
3. Inevitably this will have some bearing but at least it's a spray and I won't be getting as much cross contamination in the other paints. I'll just need to watch my layers, but it should actually work out better than normal because, being a spray, there's no chance of contaminating the wrong paint water and getting flecks in the opaque non metallic paints.

So it's all good and I'll be undercoating TONIGHT ready for painting tomorrow - I hope -

I still have a few details to add to the two newest vindicators, so I'll leave the undercoating of those for a little while until I get them totally finished.

Well, the yellows are simply VGC Gold Yellow layered on till it's covered well enough to look good. No real tricks other than watering it down and perseverance. I only use one type of paint, it's just easier for me coz I don't like stuffing around with other paints. I've tried the P3s, the Derivan Minis, the GW but I personally keep coming back to the Vallejos. I like em, they work well in my style.

Here we go, this was finished off on Thursday, but things have been so full on lately I haven't had a chance to take and post the pics for you guys. So here they are, they're not amazing photos but they give you a good idea of what they look like now.

I really like the paint here ^_^. So fast and simple in the execution that it's making me think I could do up an army of these guys someday ^_-. At the very least a skirmish squad, expect this idea stolen.

I'm a huge Vallejo fan now myself. And I've only the US Paint Set from FoW right now. I really need to go snag a whole lot more of their paints.

I would (personally) like to see some rust action going on. But I could also be missing some detail from the photos here.

God I want to play against this army ^_^.

Well, here we go! I've finally finished the main painting of the base troops and havocs. All that is left after the varnish is to gloss the lava with several layers of Tamiya clear, and then they'll all be done. I'm not going to town on the rust effects and stuff and details because these are the base troops. The more intense effects will begin once I get that far on the terminators and such.

I'm going to be the dissenting opinion here and give you some constructive criticism.

IMHO, while you have achieved a nice shade of yellow, the all silver/yellow/blue secheme you've stuck with gives the army a very three-color-and-done look, especially from a far.

I really, really think you need to pick something on the models, horns, hair, something, [i][b]anything[/b][/i] and paint it a different color to break up this look from a distance.

I will also say that I really think you should have painted black under the areas you were going to paint yellow, and then left a tiny sliver of black showing between the yellow and the silver, [i]especially[/i] with the stripes on the shoulderpads.

Those shoulder pad stripes don't benefit from the natural contour of the armor to seperate the tone from the silver like the rest of the yellow areas on the models so the stripes look very thin and half-done.

Of course, as always, your bases look amazing and up close the models do look great, its just that from a distance the army all kind of blends into a silver/yellow blur.

Anyway, that's my advice, take it for what it is.

Great progress again.

I think this will be an army of uber cool big things and decent looking infantry to support it.

For me personally the biggest problem now with the troops is their overall scheme in relation to the basing. There isn't enough contrast and the warm, rich glow of the lava totally steals the show, while it's difficult to tell where the silver changes to grey stone, and the yellow, while nice and worn lacks the visual punch of the lava. The individuality in painting doesn't quite meet the level in conversions.

I agree, a little bit of different color would make them stand out a little more. I didn't really notice it until I forgot to minimize the window before leaving my desk (bad worker bee!) and on the walk back, I didn't know what I was looking at immediately. Maybe red eye lenses or something, I don't know. I tend to use purity seals and lenses to break up the monotony on mine, which obviously doesn't apply here, so I am at a loss.
They really look great though; I rather feel like I am pointing out to DaVinci "Missed a spot." I have to agree with Yak though, they need that certain special something.

The fact that the lava rock grey is so similar in tone to the silver of your armor.

If you changed the lava rock to a brown color (against realism, I know) it would really do wonders for the models IMHO.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments. I really appreciate honest thoughts and critique, and it does help me with the overall effect.

That said, I've been looking at these for a while, and I think that the main things I could do are to add the bright light edging to many of the armour edges of yellow or silver. I know this would brighten the overall effect and make it stand out a bit better. I do have a habit of taking the model dark and then leaving it there. As to adding another colour, I have set them all up beside Ripley, and the main difference that stands out is the fact that when I did Ripley, I was immature in my use of verdigris, I used really pure greens, instead of the verdigris colours such as jade green, turquoise, red brown and white. That said, it does tend to break up the overall effect nicely. The problem with this is the fact that the overall army has so little to actually pick out in these colours, and that is the reason I have left it off the base troops.

Another point is, I have deliberately chosen to keep the troops more toward the "3 colour and done" mentality, and saved the ornate details for the higher level models. On these troops there are a number of skulls and horns painted in appropriate colours such as black and bone, but the bitch thing is, they disappear because they are so similar to the worn iron of the armour, so that lost out too... :( I guess that comes form my weathering technique, and my paint method could use some refinement - however my paint technique is more a technique designed for laziness rather than precision...I confess...

Anyways, I understand the points, but I think the difference will occur when I have done the rest of the army. And I was deliberately a bit lazier with the troops, because there are so many of the buggers and I wanted them done! Nothing worse than getting bored in the middle of an army project. Not only that, my plan is for the troops to be a bit plain to help the rest stand out more. I can certainly tell you that Ripley stands out in the midst of them! But that might be because she is 4 times the height of the average trooper!!!

Thanks again, guys, and you will see the refinement ideas added to the more intricate models (although I must say, I will stay with the gray lava because I don't want to redo the whole army bases! - sorry Migs ). Terminators are on the painting block at the moment...

I feel your pain. My army case is currently stocked with 9/10 finished marines and Grey Knights for just that reason. You probably are on the right track though; you can always get everything done, put it all down on the table and then decide what needs what. Maybe after that you can go back and touch up skulls and horns, then color a few top knots to make them all stick out.

Those look really sharp. I might cut back a little on the ice blue on the power mace; maybe only keep the flanges blue and the inner part of the head the black metal look. As it, it is sort of a lot of ice blue in once big chunk, and sort of takes away a little I think.

Awesome work though, I love the little eyes on the shoulder. Perhaps a little of the ice blue would be good to spread around the troopers to sort of spice them up?

I've pretty much finished the terminators, there'll be some extra tweaking going on, Like I'm thinking of painting the inner section of the power mace a darker colour, probably the metallic, to stop it looking so much like a giant baby rattle, and a couple of little bits and pieces here and there.

I've taken on board most of the suggestions as well that sprang out of the progress on the troops, most of which I was already going to do but one or two ideas that I hadn't thought of or wasn't sure of.

I'm now after a bit of feedback on some ideas I have for the dread - following is a pic of where I am up to, about to start on some major weathering and I can't decide on the colours for the flails. I am thinking of either doing them entirely in the turquoise power weapon scheme, top to tip, or just doing the tips in the turquoise and maybe just fiddling the weathering colours in the arms.

I vote just the tips on the dread as well. Otherwise it will just be a bit too much.
Alternately, I was knocking around an idea for "lighting" crackles on power weapons, possibly using little bits of steel wool or cotton ball, dipping in glue, and then painting the power color. Seeing as how you have more skill than I could possibly hope to muster, I suggest you try it on the dread and let me know. Crackling energy bouncing between the flails would be really cool.

the lava on the bases is to bright (in my opinion). i find my eye being draw towards the termies' feet and the lava. i feel the lava is taking attention away from the figures (which are amazing).

perhaps using darks reds, grays, and black to simulate a slow lava flow. This would help keep attention on the figures while still giving the feel of being in a lava field.

Here's my progress, I've finished the dread, and have started painting up the walking vindicator. I'm not that happy with the model and think I might just go with the 3 defilers and then do something else. After all, a possessed vindicator gives you 1 gun and thats it for the same points as something a little weaker in the cannon, with a longer range, 2 more guns and CCW...defilers are better I think for what I want...

I'll still finish painting up the vindie, but then I'll paint up the defilers next.

I really like the way you did the flails; they look even better than I had imagined previously.

I think you might have overdone the verdigris on the skulls though. With the blue of the flails so close, it looks less like oxidized bronze and more like a demi-power skull to my eye. I just think the color as is ties it more closely to the striking power flails than some decorative metal bits. Might just be the picture, or how it shows up on my laptop's screen.

In the end I just added a couple real thin brown washes. It took some of the brightness out and has made it a bit more suitable for a weapon. Other than that I haven't unrattled it much more.

Now I only have 2 defilers, 2 vindicators, 2 rhinos, a baneblade and the lord to finish.

Well, since I've adopted the moniker of Iron Giants for this army, I've completed the Chaos Lord, who is equipped with Plasma Pistol, Combi Flamer, Twin Lightning claws, Mark of Khorne and Juggernaught (both represented by the extra weapons and size - he is actually equipped with a combat servo harness assembly a-la Doc Ock). I used a mail order techmarine as the basis and I have a few bits to tidy up with GS yet, but you all have the pleasure of seeing it after the work I've done over the last couple of days. Excellent work on this one. I'm a little jealous though has this was exactly what i had in mind for my Bigmek but cant find the servo harness bitz anywhere. Alas, in the future look for a similar looking yet distinctly orky mini coming soon

Just keep in mind the string is very springy, so you need to bend them past the shape you want so they'll stay there. To get the curves I bent them carefully around a curved object, because if you try to do it without a guide, you get kinks in the cable which looks silly. But once you get the string to the spot you want it, it stays there pretty nicely. You'll need a really good wire cutter for the job too.

Yeah, Chaos spawn of raping and pillaging the universe. One day this muscular young lad knocks on his door at home and says "Oi, remember raping half of Incordia Minor 15 years ago? And thus begins the Father - Spawn relationship unique to the Iron Giants faction of the Legions of Chaos. Most other factions just eat their children...or if their children do get old enough (let alone the mother survives the impregnation) they eat their father. I really think Spawn is hanging around to learn the mecha-tech required to build his own pneumatic-powered cod-piece filler one day before offing his progenator.

Ok, small update. I've been looking at the defiler and knew that I had to update it somehow and get a little more colour in. Problem is, I knew I couldn't do too much otherwise it'd spoil the effect. So what I thought I'd do it add some glow to the eyes of the mask. I think it turned out pretty good, here's some pics to show it finished.

I think it improves the artistic aspect by drawing the eye upwards and over the model, while the lava draws the eye down. Interesting dynamic and I like how it works. But it's an evil destructive robot so I have to speak of aesthetics and artistic appeal in hushed tones so it does not attempt to destroy me...

And on another note, I've started painting Father and Spawn. They are in the final undercoat stages (ultra metal weatherings) before I start on the extra fills. I have also started modifying my two rhinos for use in the army. It was a bit of a chore to start with but now I'm really starting to see the fruit with them. Tomorrow you will see pics of the Rhinos. And tomorrow I shall reveal their dark secret....muahahahaha!

Some of you may want to kill me. But it's ok, I can live with that.

It's just thick cardboard, same stuff I'lve been using. It's all bonded with superglue, and I use the superglue to strengthen the card where it needs it too. Works well. Although the more I do it and paint the stuff, the more I wish plasticard was more readily available to me. There are a few problems with the surfaces when you paint it, even after undercoating. I might have to try some panelbeaters spray bog to see how that helps.

I really, really, really think the cog symbol on the power axe shouldn't be painted the 'powered' blue, it just looks wrong.

I think Jirga makes a decent point, or does so in paraphrase anyway. Chaos as a physical army on the table allows for a deranged amount of modeling freedom, and nowhere is this better displayed than in Lemming's work right here. Chaos as an armylist [i]used [/i]to let you be as creative in how the army actually functioned as you could be with how the army looks. This is no longer the case, but needn't mean the death of creativity. I think Jirga was suggesting that the loss of min/max conceptions of IW (read: most Chaos lists in the last years) builds allows hobbyists to in fact be more creative (i.e. unchained from fluff / powergaming, as neither are very viable any longer) and expand into doing whatever they choose from the new codex. Case in point, my bro's IW have since become heavily bionik-ed "T5 with FNP" marines with the new codex, spurring on some serious modeling to match different, previously unavailable rules.

But ironically, IW can still take 9 obliterators, as can all their evil buddies :S

Perhaps I should have said "Chaos lost stock character, but you can still mangle the models to look like whatever you want."
I feel I would be remiss if I did not point out that "counts as" does not count as "character." It counts as "the current models/rules for the forces suck, so I am going to make different ones as it pleases me."
Now, I do agree that having more options is good, but really, taking out flavorful game mechanics doesn't add character. It only makes it easier to have a bunch of armies differentiated only by what color they are.

After all, I could (theoretically) make all my exorcists 10" tall walking pulpits with pipe organs on their backs, so long as they still counted as Exorcists and sort of filled up the same space as the models. I could then take all my girls and melt them down, recasting them into bikini babes with bolters and giant riot shields, and say "See, these are the Baywatch patrol, making sure there is no heretical swimming on the beach!"
For that matter, I could just as easily say they are plague marines, only you can't see their "gifts" at a glance (bring penicillin).

In other words, fantastic modeling doesn't mean an army list has character, but is external to it, brought by the player. An army list has character when no matter what models are used to represent the figures, someone playing against it can guess the list by how it plays out.

As for the rhinos, I just couldn't afford to buy any for a while, I built these ages ago. The card thickness isn't something I'm sure on, I had to find all sorts of thicknesses to make it work but yeah - don't know any guages.

The templates are available on the web, yahoo groups BWC archive is a good source. Pretty straightforward too.

Really Awesome Army Lem. Been following those pics over 2 forums and CMON trully inspiring. I have 2 quick questions for ya. been scouring the web for a rhino pattern like you suggested, but I've only been able to find an older model. Even in BWC. Any change you could post or PM a link?
Also, What Piece did you use for extending the shoulder area and the butt of your defilers? Looked like a black plastic cap on the pictures.

Must says your defilers really made the new Soul Grinder defiler seem quite bland to me

Lol don't say that. I LOVE the new soulgrinder sculpt, I wouldn't alter it very much at all!!

The pieces I use to extend the shoulders and such are bits off crushgear models, I don't know which one, but I do know its the wheels.

Hey there Lem. Thats a great idea I think it'll look awesome as a more demonic construct. I think that you could balance a bit more how its heaviness (form wise) relates to weaponry. I just think the image is a little flimsy on the attack power look. I think if you could do something like your big cannon arms on your defilers it would look more balanced. Looking forward to it.

Well...

1) Hardly any at all - actually I don't have any proper sheet styrene, I have polycarbonate, which is roughly 3/4 of a mm, cardboard which is only slightly thinner, ice cream container plastic and balsa wood...
2) Guitar string of all sizes is useful, depending on what you are doing. I am using anything from 009 to 072 bass strings, just depends on what looks best - I play guitar and bass so I have plenty around
3) It all started with a twinkle in my daddys eye many many many years ago...

So all of you know though, I haven't done anything further on this army, but will be soon. I have a tourney to go to end of june and as it turns out I need to tweak my list - which will involve painting up some more models. They are only troops and termies but it'll be some progress all the same...and perhaps a display board if I get crazy enough...

As for where the pic came from - I found the pic over on CGNetworks, there's a lot of cool stuff over there.

The walking vindi is mainly thick card, balsa and superglue to strengthen the stuff. Other materials are plastic bits and bobs, toothpicks, greenstuff and a couple of pens.

No idea on how much. It involved a fair few models and packs - but I can't recollect how much. Time? Somewhere int he vicinity of 3-6 months? Can't remember that either - but if you check the earliest thread to the last thread with pics that should give you an idea.

Seriously, I love the scratch-builds and well everything. I was a little wary of the silver and yellow paint scheme (having never seen Iron Warriors - I assume those are their colours?) but with all the accessories, weathering, lava and glow effects, they really look fabulous.

I am however having a hard time with the blue weapons .. they are growing on me though.

I'm sooo looking forward to seeing your Baneblade Walker. Keep up the amazing work!

The new FW brass scorpion still makes me think dark eldar more than anything. I'd love to use it in a DE apocalypse force

Yeah I agree on the Forgeworld Brass Scorpion when i saw the sculpt it was a big suprise.

Sell the Ripley! Now that would be a travesty! Listen to your wife and keep it! I sold some krieg stuff a few years back and I really regretted it after.

On the subject of updates - I've also finally thought of a way to do obliterators - Ogryn servitor style dudes with a stompa-esque mega energy cannon on one arm that incorporates a variable power mode weapon, and the other arm with some kind of CCW that would represent power fist, lightning claw or power weapon - can't remember the exact stats but you get what I mean.

Something for me to keep in mind as I progress through the rest of this army

Hey Sugna - yeah saw that post - sorry I didn't reply I haven't been back on here all that often lately... Been trying to sort out stuff as it's been so busy in these parts.

Spawn idea is cool but out of character for my army. It needs to carry itself on mechanical legs But for now I'll settle for having finished painting everything unpainted in the Iron Giants army. It's all done, hopefully I'll get a camera (and some time) to rustle up some pics for y'all.

Its great but the cannon looks a bit bare/weedy to me
Maybe add an ammo feed (the shells have to get up there somehow!) or another weapon (twin linked bolter/ combi weapon?) or even just some glowing lights/targeters around the main gun

Blood_pact - I appreciate the comments but hey - 12 months too late dude... sorry. They're already painted and done.

As to everyone else wanting updates? You'll have to sit tight because I haven't got a camera as the old one died. So unless someone would like to donate a decent one to me - I won't be able to provide you with any more photos till I get that sorted out. Sorry guys.

On the painting front I've been painting individual models because to be honest - I'm sick of painting stacks of models at a time. I'm been painting up the Phoenix lords at the moment, focussing on using the CMYK colour wheel and using some colour theory to play with the hues and such. It's working very nicely I might add - I'm quite happy with the results.

This army is so spectacularly awesome that its inspired me to start collecting warhammer again. Its been... around 7 years now since I stopped collecting (I just stumbled across this site and saw this thread in the top threads section, or whatever its called). I've just started dusting off my old WD mags, and after much rummaging in my attic I've found some of the models I didn't sell on ebay 7 years ago. Things have changed a bit (two new versions of 40k??!!), but my love of wargaming has been rekindled.

Nice! And I haven't been slack - I've been playing around with a Daemon Prince today - playing around with the model. The one I have was given to me and it's missing one leg, one hand and one backpack skull vent thingy which for me is the mother of invention! I'm sculpting a new leg and looking at ways of making it techy sorta. Now that I think about it - making DP models into oblits is a TERRIFIC idea! Very expensive but cool.

And with me looking at buying a house I've been considering selling off the giants. But that's still an idea in my processes! I can always make more

Sadly still no camera though - maybe in the next 2 weeks we'll see :(

Well here’s the update I promised. He’s not quite done – I’ve got a few little things to do like integrate the wings daemonically a little more and maybe trim the facemask back a bit and finish the base – but it’s getting pretty close. I also can’t decide whether to put the shoulder pads on or not – I kinda like it without the marine shoulders…

Let me know what you reckon, if I should or should not.

I wonder the perspective photo angle you used makes the gs arm look undersized - on the normal DP the difference is made up by a big @55ed sword.

Ok - had a fair bit of feedback on this and I think shoulderpads are the way to go. Maerlyn makes a good point that the shoulders sag a lot without them. And it's also been said about it looking like a heavily armoured dude without the heavily armoured part which makes sense too.

I've gotten the shoulderpads mostly done - I just need to tweak the spiky one because it's a bit weird at the moment. Without shoulder pads makes it look rabid like it's going to run in rashly and cut sick. I think with shoulder pads it makes it look brutal.

I like brutal more - fits the theme. Maybe one day I'll make a DP without the pads and do it up as Khorne. That suits...

I've been really enjoying the sculpting side of this model. I've tried using water, KY, not vaseline because I don't want to deal with the residue and the latest I've used is a clear Aloe Vera product. It's really really flipping good! Aloe makes it so easy to work with. I'd imagine vas would stay workable longer, but aloe is easy to wash off and easy to deal with. Vaseline gets on everything and is a pain to remove so I really really like the Aloe. Water doesn't work that well for me and KY is strange to work with in this situation.

I personally like the less daemonic distorted face on this - how it gives it that deadpan menace. Like the dread you feel when you see Jason in halloween - emotionless cold calculating murderous psychopath.

I think if I left the pads off it needed more of a slavering manic face - without the pads made it look rabid and manic.

I will agree though - in some photos it looks kinda large. In others it doesn't. And strangely, in real life it doesn't look out of place to me at all. But in photos I will agree it does a bit. Me and the wife were talking about that last night - it's weird. I don't get how that works... Maybe its something to do with how my new camera focuses. Dunno.

To do that I would have to practically destroy the current head and start again. I'm not sure if I'm ready for that kind of commitment at this point in our relationship...lol

I suppose I might be able to cut the horns off the head in such a way as to allow me to re-affix them at a later stage without too much hassle if I don't like the effect. I'll have a think about it.

I like where you are going with it - but I'm not a fan of the legs. How you've started the torso is great - the merging of machine and flesh - nice work. But I think the legs need - something - of which I don't know...

I've rebuilt the head - mostly - and here is a pic of what I have done. I couldn't see what it was that people didn't like about it until after I compared the new on with the old. I was even thinking - meh I liked the old one better - but now I see them side by side I realise the error of my ways!

Have you considered something like a Tomb King Bone Giant skull for your DP? I think it would look really cool, especially with like a blue glow or watnot that you'd paint in the eyes... Sorry I'm just still not sold on the head, the rest of it looks amazing! but the head... My brother puts skull heads on his termies and they look great, I reckon, coupled with your painting ability a larger scale skull (from wherever! ) look great and give the daemon prince a really cool, impersonal and cold-hearted look... I think I'll love it either way though... keep it up!

I've gotten through a good deal of the painting but I'm not entirely convinced of the colours. I can't work out how to improve the way that it looks - there's just something about the overall appearance of this colour scheme that I can't put my finger on...

Any suggestions or thoughts?

I know what the problem is. Not enough Iron warriors colors. Maybe add some silvery grey to the armor and it'll be good.

I think maybe if you had all gold trim instead of gold and red? like on the ankles it's red fading to gold, if it was all gold it might look more "uniform". And maybe go for an iron look to the spokes in the wings?

I think you need more variance, to dissern more between the armor and the flesh, through occasional greens or blues in there, suddel hints of cool grey, just to really pop the red. A well, I agree there should be some silver in there somewhere, that or straight brass like a thirster...

I've played around with the colours but I'm going nuts. I'm much happier with the effect now. I'm not entirely happy with the wings but I suck at freehand and I suck at patterning flat surfaces. So I think I'll stay with this final colour scheme unless someone can give me a brilliant idea to finalise the overall effect...

edit: and ignore the way the head looks huge - my new camera has this weird fish eye effect when I get closer to the model, creating anything nearer to look slightly enlarged...

I like that new color a lot better. The first was just a little too dark/warm red and yellow, which with the red and yellow base just seemed like too much to me. My eye didn't know where to focus.
Perhaps a little more pink on the mutated flesh would help that, but your color variances so far have really helped.
Love the wings too!

My person opinion would be to darken the red further. ther's very little red in the rest of your army and suddenly having it all in one place will exclude this model. Prehapse more like the deadish flesh on the spikey walking thing earlyer

Also, the red/yellow combo makes it look a bit cheesy, like the original space-hulk... which doesnt do service to the brilliant model.

Lol - Yeah I understand what you are saying - that's why I think this one works because the colours are more separated. I am playing around with it again in the future but for now - I'm really over painting it so it gets painting rest for the moment

Actually, as they are spaced on the color wheel they make an excellent three-color complement. My Eldar are based on that, for example (though I use gold as my yellow).

Some of the best models i've seen use black, white, silver all mixed with one colour. Then they use a dark form of a colour that is on the opposite end of the spectrum.
ie: 80% icy blue 20% dark red, then the black/white/silver simple affects gradients.
Personally, i find most eldar colour themes garish anyway. Assuming the model in your Display Picture is from your army, there is alot of white there and the red is Muted/darkened, as i recomended to Lemmingspawn in my original post. Geddit?

Very nice model, though for fluff purpose its different to see demonic or warped IW. Normally(aside from primarch) they would remove the mutation and replace it with bionics.

Yea I know bout the oblits.. IW are my main force though now they're just neat looking general space marines
Very interesting idea for the oblits. I've seen some cool oblits made with a wide variety of robot toys so it looked like the oblit took some battle damage.

This simply looks bad-ass! I only flipped through the pictures and read a few post. I love the switch to the legs to the reverse knees(what is that even called?). It makes more sense for the centre of balance if this was a walker in real life. Aswell as controlling recoil as i picture the vindicator shooting like cannon from back in the day.

Hope to see more pics in the future cause this model is stunning!

It's mostly GW kitbash - there are a few bits and pieces out of here and there like cogs, gears, engine parts and a few little bits and bobs. Majority GW though.
