I normally read a few books at a time and jump between them.
I do the same thing. People always ask me why I don't get confused.

In any case, I'm reading the Oath of the Empire series by Thomas Harlan, Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson, Birthright: The Book of Man by Mike Resnick, On Killing by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, and Sleep Disorders Medicine (2nd edition) by Sudhansu Chokroverty.

Oath of the Empire is an alternate history/fantasy where the Western Roman Empire lasted (with the aid of magic) into the late 600s, where they assisted the Eastern Roman Empire in the invasion of Persia.

Quicksilver I'm only a chapter into, but if it's anything like his other books it'll focus on mathematics and a twisty plot I won't understand until the last 4th of the book.

Birthright: the Book of Man is a collection of short stories detailing the future history of mankind, including his rise to ruling the universe and his subsequent fall and extinction.

On Killing is probably one of the most facinating books I've ever read. It delves into the psychology of killing and killers.

Sleep Disorders Medicine is interesting if you enjoy learning about what can go wrong with the human body. Or if you work in the sleep field.

Just read Luck in the Shadows, by Lynn Flewelling, which a friend gave me for my birthday. Decent fantasy book, focusing on a young rogue (in D&D terms) getting his start. Not great, but enjoyable.

I'm about two thirds of the way through The Surgeon's Mate, which is the seventh of Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey/Maturin books. I really like these, but I'm not hurrying through them. I usually get a couple of them for Yule and a couple for my birthday.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I do the same thing. People always ask me why I don't get confused.
Ditto. I also leave them in various places-- different rooms in the house, the car, my bag-- so more or less wherever I am there's something to grab and read if the mood hits suddenly. Though mostly I do it because even if a book is interesting you don't always want to be reading *that one* even if you want to be reading. Reagen's an interesting guy, but 300 pages of White House dinner commentary isn't something I can tackle without a break .

What kind of reading pace do the rest of you have?
What are you reading right now.

I'm reading Loop by Koji Suzuki(or was before it got lost somewhere in my car).

It's the third book in the Ringu series(the first 2 books inspired Ringu and Rasen, later followed by Ringu 2 and Ringu 0, as well as those American abortions). Like the first two books, it's very scientifically written. Centers around a young med student that discovers a link between low gravity and longevity zones leading to a discovery of a near null gravity zone in the midwestern US. There's also a strange new cancer going around that almost mimics the Ring Virus that killed so many people in the first two books(and NOT a dead girl coming out of the TV). Turns out inside the longevity zone is the application of a study in Japan that has built up into a virtual world built around real human DNA.

I suggest anyone interest in science/mysticism mix books to read the whole series, including the short story in Birthday that explains more about Sadako's life and death. The books are much better than any of the movie or TV Series adaptations and make much more sense, especially her hatred of humanity because of being raped by the last known case of Japanese Small Pox, almost being killed by her rapist because she has TFS, and then thrown down a well.

I'm reading a whole stack of literature on timber frame buildings, not for my own personal satisfaction but because I'm starting a new job on Thursday (complete with temporary pay reduction). These types of buildings are not common where I live but I'm certain that they soon will be, so I want to go down this route now that the opportunity has presented itself.

When I get some time to myself I'll probably use most of it for painting, waste a lot of it on messageboards, and confine my reading to bath time (fortunately my new job is also literally a 10 minute walk from where I live, so there'll be no more public transport reading window that I've always made good use of), and I'll probably be reading some true crime stuff. I'd probably have a whole stack of true crime on my shelves, but it would probably make me look like a wierdo.

Hmmm.
Just finished re-reading The Neutronium Alchemist series again.

Going to go back now and re-read all of my "World War" stuff by Turtledove again. Good mindless brain candy.(Thanks for reminding me Waaaagh G. )

Going to need some suggestions though, am finding my library is being recycled a bit too often.
No, malf, I just started a while back. After I finish this one, I am going to try 1776 by David McCullough, and then find something well respected and readable on Ben Franklin. Reading about Taft after Lincoln would just be depressing But I do plan on trying to get through some of the biggies - The Roosevelts, more Lincoln (because there is never enough on Lincoln), and Jefferson. I'll keep you posted though.

I do highly recommend America Afire. Like, BIG TIME, if you are a fan of American history.

EDIT: Before you think I'm "smart", I recently read Fulgrim

Take that as you will. In my older age, I find books about more meaningful things...more meaningful, I suppose. I'll still read Legion by Abnett

Re:What are you reading right now.

I'm reading Taxation of Business Enterprises by Robert Peroni. It's a very post modern story: casting a wide variety of business owners as the protaganists locked in conflict with the IRS. Much of the narrative is literally in the form of court opinions, with oft lengthy asides about the legal issues involved, much like the factual tangents of Victor Hugo. In an interesting twist, none of the protaganists never meet, and much like the movie Slacker, few of the characters are featured for long, and hardly any return for more than one or two scenes.

Probably the most interesting facet of the book is the constant references to "The code," it's meaning, it's interpretation, and it's execution. While the code isn't really written out in Taxation, this is a popular enough novel that a third party actually wrote out the entire code. I've been skimming the Code, and it's remarkably complex, but not exactly clearly written (which is of course a recurring theme of conflict within Taxation itself!"

The book has some flaws however. There isn't much character development, except for ironically the neutral arbitrator of the the Tax Court, a character whose job is to pass judgement upon the heros. Over the sixty years of the narrative, which of course appear out of order, the Tax Court is revealed to be remarkably complex. While most authors lean on cliches and stereotypes for judges, Peroni exposed the thinking and actions of the Tax Court in all it's glory.

It's better than Fulgrim and leagues above Descent of Angels. I definitely like that it's from the perspective of the Imperial Army as opposed to the Alpha Legion.

The twists are just great.

Now on to finish the Van Carstein trilogy, to inspire my creative hand!

I was always sort of vaguely interested in trying it out, especially after finding the World War series enjoyable fluff.

Hey Boss, you read any Rushdie other than Midnight Children? Technical manual - for about the 1000th time.
Wolves of the Calla; The Dark Tower V. It's taking me almost as long to read Stephen King's Magnum Opus as it took him to write it.
Old Man's War: Pretty cool concept. I actually liked this one alot
The Quest by Wilbur Smith: good old adventuring in ancient Egypt.
The Reulators by Stephen King/Richard Bachman.
I finally broke down and read Horus Rising. It was my first exposure to Dan Abnett, and outside of Draco from "The Inquisition War", my first 40k novel. I've heard that the Inquisition series isn't the high water mark for GW fiction, so I gave the Horus Heresy a shot, and I'm glad I did.

Horus Rising was a great pulp page turner: the characters were solidly 2 dimensional, so they never got in the way of the plot. I had heard that Abnett novels tend to rattle along for 200 pages and then finish rapidly in the last 50, and Rising did not disapoint there. The action was fast paced, the attention to detail is much appreciated, and the ability to look into the 40k universe of the great crusade is fascinating.

My question would be: should I read the rest of the series? Are there books to skip? I've heard that HR might be the high point of the series, is that true?

Polonius, personally I have enjoyed all but one of the books in the series, with fulgrim being a better book than horus rising in my (seemingly sole) opinion. The only book not worth reading is Descent of Angels, the rest I would recommend (and read them in series order as well to get more out of them).

Yeah, probably the parts of it I liked the best were the trout fishing with Bill in Bayonne, and when Jake was in San Sebastian by himself. It's weird, as if when the characters are all together the pace of life is frenetic, and until they are separated from one another, that is the only time where things become peaceful.

Actually, I just found a very old copy of Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam from my grandfather's house.
Just finished Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell a navy seal. Really liked it, its an eyewitness account of a navy seal combat in afghanistan. Its kinda like blackhawk down, a handful of our guys against a horde of terrorists. Its a sad story though. Also the author is a fairly conservative christian, big surprise, no problem for me cause I am too but some people might not be able to get past it.

I have even more respect for our special forces guys after reading this, and also a grudging respect for their deadly opponents fighting skills in afghanistan, those tibesman have been fighting over that exact same ground for centuries.

Also just started reading Abnett alpha legion book last night. Have managed to avoid any spoilers. Really likes the first chapter so hope the rest is as good or better.

Both dive
into popular culture and incorporate them into surreality,
but the biggest difference is that Stephen King over explains
his endings while Murakami, um, doesn't explain anything.

I love these topics... so many interesting books out there that I've never heard of.

I'm currently jumping back into non-fiction. Right now I need to finish up "A History of Hell" by Alice Turner, which is exactly what it sounds like and veeeery interesting. I actually picked it up because I was considering doing a demon army next year, and while it only touches peripherally on demons (being much more concerned with Hell as a place) it touches on the origins of old buddies of ours such as Nergal (Nurgle) and even Harlequins. A great, eclectic read so far.

I'm still in the beginning of "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", which is slow going because I take such huge breaks in between sessions.

@Malfred - How is Duma Key? I actually love listening to Stephen King on Audiobook. I've never read one of his novels in print format, (just short stories) but I've listened to a ton of his books on cd. They're great for work, really engaging characters, but since you're right and he does tend to over-explain things, I can zone a little bit from time to time without falling out of the story completely. I'm really curious about his latest thought, and would be interested to know if it's any good.

"The Case Against Israel"

A very good book that gets beyond the pointless liberal bullshit over the issues in Palestine. The book brings up moral argument concerning the illegal status of Israel.

Of course it won't change nothing, as most people decides to ignore facts and history and continue to support a country that shouldn't exist.

Just finished Ghost War, Stackpole. Trite mechwarrior read, but filled in the gaps of time while doing some banal coputer chores. Picking up Lovecraft myself, "Waking Up Screaming" anthology. After that, "The Transition of H.P. Lovecraft", which explores how he got from his really early writings (not the 6 year old schlock every kid tries) to his later pinnacle of fantasy/horror. After that, a book my wife literally threw at me in shear hatred (of the book, I hope) "Critical THeory Today", on literary analysis tools. Then on to a binge in the classics starting with Crime and Punishment.

And then on and on and on...

I'm in the midst of Ambrose' Band of Brothers at the moment. Fantastic read.

I've also just picked up the new re-printing of Moorcock's Elric: Stealer of Souls, which should serve as a nice gateway drug into the Multiverse.

One of the Lovecraft compilations slowly floats around my apartment. It ends up in the void behind my eyes every once in a while, screaming to be let out. I eventually have to read a story or two to calm it, lest the insanity gain a foothold.

I plan on digging out Hamilton's The Reality Dysfunction soon. I never did finish it the first time around, though I might have finished the first half.

Bova's The Precipice is also on my to-read list.

Kroeger: I just finished Old Man's War a month or so ago. And I agree, it's portrayal of humanity's expansion into space is fascinating. I highly suggest it to anyone who wants a good Sci-Fi read.

The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met.
