Arcades full of side scrolling beat'um ups were the best. I have no idea how much money I pumped into Bad Dudes, Double Dragon, Final Fight, Warriors of Fate, X-Men, Dungeons and Dragons: Shadows Over Mysteria, and Aliens vs. Predator. All such good games that now only seem to exist on MAME.

Best more-or-less side-scroller: Final Fight, hands down. One of the best [b][i]games[/i][/b] ever, IMO. I think it was one of the first of this type (obv Double Dragon was older but that game blew huge chunks), and inspired the side-scrolling-plus-up-and-down-the-screen genre which included some real gems like X-Men (the huge double-wide six player version was my favourite )
