Army Transports - what do people use?

As I am getting back into the hobby and building and increasing my ork army, I need something to transport it. I have a KOS army with lots of trukks, battlewagon, looted wagons plus around around 110+ ork boyz. So I need a pretty large transport. Right now I have everything in about 3 of those Gamesworkshop carrying cases, but to lug 3 of those around is a pain.

Looking around the web, it seems the Sabol Army transport is popular, does anyone have any reviews for this? Does anyone else with a large army of both vehicles and infantry use something different? How big a transport would you guys recommend for a larger model army? Ideally, I would like to carry one large case around instead of 3.

Thanks for your feedback.

Army Transports - what do people use?

I use the Sabol Motor Pool bag for my vehicles. It has ONLY my vehicles in it. It's large but not overly bulky and isn't too tall. Off the top of my head I think it has 6 sets of Sabol foam in there ranging from 2 inch to 4 inch thick. It has also an outside zipper pocket for books/papers/templates/etc as well as an inside slider pocket. Also along the outside it has two "belt-pouch" style pockets for dice, measuring tape, etc

My only gripe about it is the lack of a shoulder strap though I plan on changing that. It does have two handles though so it's not impossible to carry, don't get me wrong. The GW cases don't have shoulder straps either, so carrying it and a couple GW cases can be uncomfortable.

I have the standard Sabol Army Transport with 4x1" trays, 1x3 1/2 inch and 1x4 in tray. I can take 3 Leman Russes (one with sponsons), 2 Hellhounds and about 110 infantry with each IG model getting his own space on the 1 " tray and the HW teams in the Hellhound tray. Everything is a nice tight fit and nothing jostles around whne moving, has been solid and held up for a couple of years. The best things is by just switching out any extra trays you can take whatever you need that particular day. The front pouch will hold about 4-5 codex, haven't tried putting a BGB in it before since I carry the BFM mini book with me. Pouches hold dice and markers. Was 60 pucks at Warstore + I purchased that 3 1/2 inch tray (so I have a few extra one inch to mix and match). Mine does have the should strap.

I'm going to get a tackle box for my Marines since there are less and they take up more room in the Sabol style trays, I think I will be magnetizing the bases so they stand upright inside (wish I had a picture, one of the other guys has been using cooking pans the height of the models inside with no sliding).

I use a sabol army transport. it works very well for my vehicles (TAU). I'm less impressed with it for troops, especially my pile o' kroot.

My gaming group has started using magnetized bases to transport guys. If your guys are uniform height (and not too tall) you can combine the magnetized bases with the army transport foam trays. Just rip out all the foam in the middle and glue some sheet metal into the bottom. This is nice - lets you have the advantages of the army transport (strap, decent bag, pockets, good for vehicles) and gives you more density when transporting a lot of same-height dudes (gaunts, most IG, my kroot).

If you just cut two pieces of foam one for the top and one for the bottom it works quite well and they're cheap too (buy 'em at Wal Mart for a few bucks).

For the infantry sized models I have also found that Wal Mart has these really compact four tray tackle boxes that are capable of being hung on the wall. They are basically a plastic cage that holds the four trays so they take up a very minimal amount of space and the plastic is just sturdy enough that it doesn't feel flimsy. I really can't recommend them enough I've bought something like four of them since I discovered them. My only complaint is that for metal models you need to insert a small piece of foam into each compartment to keep your guys from bouncing around. The foam from blister packs works perfect for this though.

I tried to find a picture on Wal Mart's web site (and a few other web sites) and I didn't have much luck so your mileage may vary as to whether you can even find these things locally.

Army Transports - what do people use?

Sabol cases are cool, except that they don't use any kind of standard Foam sizes, so if you want different foam for a different army, you're pretty much stuck buying from them.

I got a Skirmishpack from www.charonproductions.com, GW was apparently seeling them for awhile at one point. They've got slightly more capacity than the big GW hardshell cases. (same doublewide area for foam, but can fit about 1 more tray deep) Use the same foam as the GW cases, and when you order it, if you ask nicely, he'll put whatever design you want on the front of the case. They also come in "scoutpack" which is one foam tray wide, and "Battlepack" which is 3 foam trays wide. (must be for people who play 'nids in Apocalypse without monstrous creatures :p)

I got in pre-Sabol, so I have *several* Chessex figure cases. Each can hold over 100 smaller (i.e. IG / SoB-sized) models. They're hard-shelled, so they stack nicely and do a good job of protecting things as long-term storage. I can carry up to 4 cases in a squared duffel bag, along with books and such. The only problem is that you can't use them easily for things more than 1.9" tall, particularly vehicles.

If I had to do it all over, I'd probably have gone Sabol.

In the mean time, I'm making a vehicle cases of my own to carry my IG tanks.

Currently I use just a regular GW case but it only fits about 1000pts of my Tau, so I'll be upgrading soon. Originally I had bought a huge toolbox(an actual toolbox, not one like Aduro's) which was on sale for $20 at Canadian Tire, and then I went to Michael's(massive craft supply store) and bought several sheets of soap foam(I think that's what it's called). I never actually got around to carving out the foam for my models, which is good because now I've come up with something new.

I'm going to use a soccer bag and steal tomguycot's idea with the stackable sterelite tubs and just put them inside the soccer bag. It's more than safe enough, easily customizable, and best of all it's extremely stealthy. I've even got my name on the soccer bag from when I played competitive.
If I could figure out where to get decently inexpensive eggshell foam, I'd give that option some consideration myself. As it stands, whenever I've considered a toolbox, I've always found myself at a loss for how to do the foam.

How do you do it sketchbook?
I use this incredibly cheap soft yellow foam they had. It comes in big strips of a foot by an inch, so I made a card frame that fell into the toolbox, put some cardboard in that as a floor, then ran the strips up and across on a per-miniature basis. I can make space for forty troopers in twenty minutes and I've never damaged one, and I can stack the sheets five high letting me transport two hundred men in a single, 30 dollar box. The original hinges worried me so I replaced them with steel ones, but other than that the box is unmodified. Yes, it's a huge bloody box, no, it doesn't matter. I actually bough a second one when my guard army got out of control big, allowing my to carry almost all of my entire demi-regiment in my hands! Thank god they were all plastic.

When I started my armoured company for imperial guard (when I say armoured company, I mean it. Understand when I finished with my guard army I could technically field thirty two tanks not including transports) I got a second box, this one a repurposed "universal heavy tool carrier" originally intended to carry chainsaws and the like. I can put my entire armoured company in it, and it even has compartments for the turrets from my russes and the cannons from my laser tank destroyers.

Re:Army Transports - what do people use?

We have a "container" store here where I found one of those huge plastic cases for dirt cheap. It looks like the GW case, only no Imperial Eagle on it, and it's about 2-2.5 times bigger. I think it was meant to transport large camera or audio equipment. Then at the last gun show, I picked up a huge piece of dark foam for about $15 and cut it up. Perfect for my largest army (Ultramarines). I bought a case similar to the GW one at Games Day 98 in Baltimore (they didn't make their own case back then) and I found another of the exact same case used at the local gun store. Those are currently storing my Eldar. I have an actual rifle case (big enough to fit two or three rifles in it) for my Empire army, Then I did the metal briefcase looking toolbox deal with extra foam for my Tyranids though they're growing bigger so I'll have to get something new for them soon. The rest of my odds and end figures, half completed armies, etc are all stored in plastic containers.

For anybody wanting the foam for a case, but don't want to pay GW, Reaper, or anybody else's prices for them, I get mine kind of in bulk at gun shows, but I've found this is a pretty good website if you just want to order it off the net.

http://www.foambymail.com/packaging.html

Hope this helps whoever may be looking.
I just looked the Sabol cases people were talking about to see what those were. Irk. I had a bad experience with one of those Army Transport cases of theirs. When it was in the trunk of my car, summer heat apparently resoftened the glue that had held the foam in place, and glued my figs into the tray. Lost strips of paint when I went to remove them, so now I avoid those cases myself.
I had teh same thing happen. Thankfully most of them were unpainted, but it was annoying. I lost a few limbs from my figs that are now a permanant part of the sabol case. Not only that the foam board that the foam walls are glued to used to be if not still are pretty damn hard so your figs often break in the case if you drop it or anything unexpected happens. Now I just get shotgun cases for small to medium sized models (size of a dread or smaller) and use shoe boxes or Lanr Raider boxes for my larger models, and of course wrap them in t-shirts. Why bothe rpaying for a case?

Most all of my finished armies have rare earth magnets in the bases. I buy tool boxes with a flip open large top compartment and 2-3 metal drawers. All of my infantry go into the drawers, by squads. All of my vehicles and large models fit into the top. At tournaments and casual play, I can go straight to whatever models I want without juggling a bunch of trays and trying to unbury the right one.

As point values go up in tournaments I might be pressed to find something larger. Right now I can fit around 180 cadian infantry models, including heavy weapon bases, in drawers with room to spare and 3 lemans or basilisks, 3-4 chimeras or hellhounds and 8-10 sentinels in the top compartment.

Look at hardware and home improvement places and find one that's right for you. It seems like a lot of work with magnets and all but it's worth the trouble.
For my Eldar army, which is my best painted army ever, I spared no expense and went with the Sabol Army Transport. For my Necrons. which are less than detailed (I got the old skool ones from an X-mas army deal about 8 years ago. Painted 200pts. in two nights.) I use a standard rifle/bow case. I have another rifle/bow case for my titans.

Little tip for the Sabol users:
The foam is connected to the bases of the trays via glue. When you tear out your foam columns to fit your models, you often get it out with no foam chunks still connected to the bottom. This leaves glue residue as the topmost layer of the tray. I found that, in the hot summertime days in my car, the glue would soften and my painstakingly and meticulously painted Eldar would stick to the bottom of the trays. When I would remove Guardians, arms would be stuck and I would inevitably pull one off the model. Some lost chunks of paint to the glue. This happened ONCE before I devised a remedy for the problem...

I cut out rectangles of aluminum foil to fit the holes made for the models and glued them down to the exposed tray. Viola! No more gluey death for my stuff. Now they go back to dying to Ordinance like they do...

Ghidorah
the problem is only at the edges, where the pull out foam is glued to the base.
That's true of the Army Transports sold now. I suspect Ghidorah, like me, bought one in the first year or two or so of general availability- at that time even the pull-out cubes in the center were glued to the base, so you had the problem throughout the whole tray. Happily, that's no longer true- you might have to be aware of it if you were acquiring an older one used, I guess.

And Wehrkind, the paper-towel rectangles solution is exactly what I did with my first Army Transport.
Re:Army Transports - what do people use?

JohnHwangDD: I posted those links on Bartertown. I was seriously considering that alternative but the pick and pull foam is a little expensive. So I turned to searching Ebay and came across this:

These are 1" thick and 16"x18" and have a very thin skin of rubber on the bottom. I picked up 15 for $10 plus shipping from these guys:
http://www.foamandupholstery.com/

You don't have to bid on Ebay, you can just call them direct and say you saw their auction. They have a bunch of colors to choose from.

I trimmed a couple down to fit this:

This is the Plano 1404 pistol case. It comes with a layer of pick and pull foam on the bottom, a layer of eggcrate in the middle and a layer of eggcrate in the lid. I picked up two of these at Wal-mart for $8.00 a piece.

I cut holes out of my purchased foam and glued the foam on to foam board to add rigidity. You can get the proper fit by drawing around the foam inserts that come out of the Plano case. You have to fiddle with the foam board to get the proper fit as the original foam is held in by being bigger than the case but once you have the fit you can save it as a template and create as many as you need.

After ordering all this foam and trying to be cheap my wife goes to Ft. Collins, CO for a girls weekend and comes back with a Sabol Army Transport she picked up on clearance from Hobbytown. I love her. And now with all this extra foam I can make a poop load of extra trays for the Sabol.

Army Transports - what do people use?

apologies for re-opening what appears to be a dead thread.. but:

I've almost finished my awesome Necron army ( 7 immortals to go ), and am going to have to figure a way of carring the 30 troop models and 3 monoliths around safely (the nearest place to game other than my own house requires a 20 minute train journey)

I like the sound of the Football bag with tubs stacked inside, this could be cheap and effective

Alternatively I've seen some KR 'Double' Alluminium cases.. hmm..

Steering towards the football bag idea since I can store multiple armys in cheap tubs and just put em in the bag when needed. But one question, my dad has access to loads of bubblewrap at his workplace and I figure bubblewrap is better for the Tubs anyway. Is that right?

Cheers, Gary

I'd advise against bubble wrap as it will get to be a pain to wrap/unwrap every single time you play. I'd look at either getting some soft foam and making some fitted recesses for them, or some steel sheet for the tubs and rare earth magnets for the bases.

Interesting idea on the magnets, i've not heard or seen that one before.

Somehow I can imagine something going nastily wrong like the magnetic bases flying towards the tape measure

I guess I could just find some Sabol/GW Foam trays to be put in the tubs (can be hard getting Sabol in the UK), or would it be better to find some other brand of foam?

They are more suvivable.
I've got a reaper case that my nurgle-skaven army lives in, and I buy a lot of reaper trays on eBay to put models in and then put the trays into (liquor ) boxes for transport to the store and back. Cheaper than Sabol trays, though smaller, and I can swap my ogres out for the reaper case for bigger rides.

I also have an Army Transport case for CSM boys, but that's largely because of all the demon princes, vehicles, random big stuff. Frankly AT is better than Reaper transports IMO, but Reaper is a bit cheaper in the end.

My GW case is nice for armies that are nearly all infantry (demons) but generally requires a second box / foam tray to hold the bigger stuff (DP, soul grinder).

- Salvage

I use a battle hive for my marines, it now also come in double size with nadle an wheels for those huge armies. Bought one of the big GW cases at crimbo for my admech, big mistake. They're big and bulky and the internal layout wastes a lot of space. It fits about two banblades (with turrets next to the hull). I reconment a battle hive, it fits 40marine per level (you will need to varnish them as to fit thismany they are separated by squad lines rather than individually, but I've used it for a few years now and not had any major probs. Only thing that I don't like is the starp but you can get loads of straps from guitar shops etc.

I have a Sabol case for my marines, and up until recently had made a wooden box with metal bottom for my Sisters. They all had magnetic bases, and I had made the case big enough that the Exorcists and Penitents can fit without an issue.
However, after a while carrying around a large wooden box filled with lead, I deced to get a second Sabol Motor Pool for the girls. Still happy with those, though I am not certain the MP is sufficient.

Anyone have any experience with the Battalion or whatnot (the big wheeled ones)? I am not certain I want to invest in the "Lexus of army transports" without some feed back. That's a lot of tiny metal women I would be giving up for that baby.

Army Transports - what do people use?

I have 3 of the sabol army transports.. one original flavor, one motor pool and one of the massive divisional suitcase ones. I have yet to take the big one anywhere but i got that because it came with tons of trays and also because I need to pack up and transport my stuff as I'm in the process of moving. I can fit my full 2000 pt guard army with 7 tanks in the motor pool case, the regular kind could fit a higher point cost army like marines. The big one is made really well, haven't had any problems with it. I will probaby take it to the next club day when I have a few different games scheduled so I'll be able to fit at least 2 full armies in it..

Also I got in the habit of buying empty foam trays when I build a new unit or tank or whatever, so that everything can have it's own tray. So instead of sitting my models on a shelf to get full of dust, I keep them in the trays all the time. Makes it easy when I'm going out for a game, I just pack up whatever bag with whatever trays I need.

It does make an already expensive hobby even more expensive, but for the amt of money and time I invest in building and painting the stuff, I don't mind spending the extra cash to keep it safe.

I don't know how reliable/current that is- maybe they changed the deisgn, maybe you just have to be careful about putting heavier models in the lower trays, or maybe it was just a couple of anecdotes that don't represent the majority experience- but I thought I'd bring it up and see if anyone who owns one can address that specific topic...
