Topic Update

This is an automated message added by the articles system.

A new article titled Articles has been added to the dakka articles system.

This message thread is for the discussion of content in the article. Any updates to the article will be automatically added to this thread and (if you are logged in), you can get automatic email updates as and when the article changes by clicking 'Email me when this thread changes' below. If you are the author or have added a lot to the article then it is a good idea to do this to ensure that you maintain control over the content of the article.

If you have anything to add to the article, then just jump in and edit it by going to the actual article page and clicking 'edit' (the link can be found just above the article). If there is no edit link then the article is locked for now, so just add your comments or content to this thread and if they are appropriate and the article owner checks this thread, they should get merged in.

If there is something in the article that you wish to debate, then this is the place to do it. Just hit the reply button and get chatting. You need to be registered and logged in to post in the forums so if you are an anonymous article editor then now would be a great time to register and join in dakka's great forum discussion!

I have redesigned the articles home page now to be more like wikipedia's homepage (I assume that since they are the most popular wiki on the planet, they are doing something right with their homepage, so have liberally borrowed ideas from them!) As always, I would be interested to hear ideas and opinions on the changes from anyone. Next stop, the army profiles home page.

I like what you did with the Articles page. It will take some
time for me to get used to deciphering it. How often did
you want to rotate featured articles? I was thinking we
could alternate between updating different boxes, or did
you want something more like Black Gobbo with the
weekly/biweekly/whatever it is schedule and just redo
everything?

I was thinking every week or so, or whenever we add an especially great new article. If you or other article mods go to edit it, you will see that there are some comments indicating the places to edit to update the content, so you shouldnt need to worry about the more complex bits of formatting that area there.

Article Discussion: Articles

So the 'readers comments' feature needs a revamp.

It places comments directly into a well laid out article (with a RED font, like some teacher has scored your paper...wtf?) and ruins it.

It's a free edit of the article that does not trigger a notice to the article author.

I moved all the stupid comments in the CSM tactica to the bottom, I'd rather just delete them since it forces me to accept the comments and discussion of an article should not occur WITHIN the article but I've left them for now. You can view the history and see how bad it looks.

Hopefully that feature will be reworked. It's absolutely horrible as it is.

Sadly I noted this was done by yakface manually.

Please man, don't ruin articles that way. Let's find another way to incorporate user comments.

Article Discussion: Articles

Yeah I noticed that, and had a flamewar with yakface about
it (nah, just a pm discussion about how to handle
disagreements within an article's tactica).

Wikis are weird for commenting systems. They're moderated
in a way that most blogs and discussions aren't, yet open
in a way that regular websites aren't. Some of the wikis
use trusted users more stringently than others, whereas
others allow for multi-user edits in order to gather vast
amounts of information.

I don't have an answer. When you open up the system
you encourage more users, but when you lock it down
you preserve the content. We'll have to start another
thread, probably in nuts and bolts, to compare wikis,
their functions and their management just to decide
what works best for Dakka.

Re:Article Discussion: Articles

In the true spirit of a wiki, those comments should not be in the article. They were tolerated as they predate the proper article discussion forum threads (like this one), which are now the proper place for those sorts of questions/comments. Ideally they should now be totally edited out and any changes worth keeping merged in to place with the rest of the article. A summary of the Q&A should then be posted in the thread relating to the article found using the 'discuss this article' link at the bottom of an article. The articles should read like articles, not like forum threads.

The problem with the word Template is that we use it for
Article Templates.
BTW Stelek,

All I did was to put borders around Xen's comments in your article and call them "reader response" so that no one would confuse what he was writing with your original article.
