Bugs in new dakka

Bit of an annoyance, more than anything else. I noticed that if I read a post, and then post a reply, it counts the post as a "new post" that I haven't read yet on the forum. If I just posted, that means I read it. I want to be notified of new posts by someone OTHER than myself.

I also noticed that if I click on the "read latest reply" it goes to the beginning of the thread, not the final post.

Other than that, love the new dakka functionality.

Kudos on the latest release.

I really like it, but is there a way to make it so when I close my browser all the threads are set to read anyway? lol I depend on that.
The 'skip to the first unread' hiccup was probably just because all read dates have been reset, so from now on it will be fine, but the first couple of times you read a post, it will skip to the first unread where the first unread will be the first post.
Re:Bugs in new dakka

Tacobake, it is firefox compatible as that is pretty much all that was used to develop it. The problem you are seeing is that your cache has not updated yet. Hit shift and refresh at the same time to get the latest stylesheet (might be ctrl-refresh I can never remember).

Country flags are done by IP and are about 99.9% accurate. People who use ISPs that share IPs across countries (like AOL) will sometimes have the wrong flag, as will people using US govt ISPs (like military users in other countries). They are meant as a general guideline for mods to smackdown bad english, and are not set in stone. They are set for each individual post rather than for the poster in general.

Stelek, I think you misunderstand... you dont have to click a button to see new posts... after 14 days any unread posts will be automatically marked 'read', any new posts will always be marked as read. Most other forums dont offer that much read tracking but due to the large number of casual users that we want to make a bit more chatty, we made it go that far back (most forums are 7 days max). As mentioned before, all posts are marked 'read' as a one-off temporary thing from switching to the new read-tracking software, so just click 'mark all read' this once, and then all future posts will be flagged as 'New' only if they are really new. New posts will always be highlighted as 'New Posts' and you can also browse by using the 'Recent Threads' link to make sure you only see the latest posts if you have a large number of unread 'New' posts that you never want to read, but cant be bothered clicking 'mark all posts read'. We will be adding session-based read tracking again but have to basically re-implement it due to the big change in the underlying system to support the new read tracking code, so it will take a couple of months to get round to doing it. I assure you that you will like it in the future, it is just slightly different so will take a couple of days to get used to the logic behind it

Oh man just reading all that on a sunday made my brain hurt.

I meant it's a pain in the ass to have to click 'mark as read' every time I visit, and then close my browser just so I can see if there are new replies in specific forums. i.e. it's nice for there to be a global setting, but without being able to turn it off it ruins the way I (and I'm pretty sure, others) use dakka. I am going to make it much nicer and cleaner in the future (and in the medium-term I'll add an option to disable auto-subscribe on posting in a thread). For now you can either go to a thread and then click 'Unsubscribe' which can be found at the bottom of the thread page, or go to the old subscriptions page which has a 'Delete' button. I dont have the direct URL to hand but if you cant wait I can get it to you tomorrow. If you can wait, it will be coming in the next few weeks hopefully (assuming no big bugs creep up).

Bugs in new dakka

I'm pretty sure I do understand how the forum read system works. I'll try and explain why I don't like it with a before and after view.

Before:

I visit dakka, the forums I usually read have nothing new in them, look at the other stuff and see if there's anything I want to look at...if not, close the browser.

Rinse and repeat.

After:

I visit dakka, the forums I usually read have nothing new in them, look at the other stuff and see if there's anything I want to look at...if not, close the browser.

Oops, forgot to 'click' mark all threads read.

Open browser, click the link...close browser.

===============

This is not default behaviour on any other web sites forums, and I visit alot of them.

Why is it default now?

I know I wanted a mark all threads as read button, but I didn't want to have to keep clicking the damn thing.

Reload, oops there's some new stuff...but nothing I care about...click mark as read.

Rinse and repeat. :(

This is not a good thing. I know you probably worked your ass off to get this to work, but I don't want to have to click the damn thing.

You think casual users will like this? They visit once a day or week, so don't they have to go into every forum and look at every thread to actually see what's new? Why does it help casual users?

The behaviour should be (IMO) like this:

Visit, everything gets marked as read when you close your browser. If you are a heavy user, the 'mark all threads read' is a useful tool so you can pull up threads you want to reply to then 'nuke' all the 'unread' threads you don't care to (i.e. what I do is open new forums and then new subthreads in new tabs...and then when I'm done I have to close all of my browsers to get everything marked as 'read'.)

It should be an option not a requirement. i.e. Sometimes doing it will be nice, so I don't have to close all my browser windows (like, so I can keep my internet radio going). Most of the time though, I'd rather just close the browser I was using for a quick peek and seeing nothing new of interest...just close it and come back later when I had another free minute.

I can't be the only person this is annoying to. lol

The "double click to edit" functionality is neat, but a little odd. First, I can't determine when I can use it. Second, it prompts (via popup) for a "Reason for change" - failure to enter a reason results in a stern popup, and the loss of the edits. But the reason is never included in the post.

*edit: Is it related to quotes?
This was a triumph.
*edit2: Yes, it is! Inclusion of a quote in this message allows "Double click to edit" .

It's handy. I may start including quotes at random, just to enable it for my own nefarious purposes.

*Edit: Also, just for your reference, it looks like "double click to edit" does not flag the post as edited. E.g., I edited one post that way, and it lacks the "This post was edited X times" tag. Another post (up above), I edited my quoted text, and it didn't increment the edited count.

Re:Bugs in new dakka

Whereabouts? Just on the top right of every page? On the lower left hand side of articles section too? Once you are logged in on the forums, if you go to the dakka home page (by clicking the dakka logo), are you still logged in (there should be a logout link under the logo)? I had to restart the server a couple of times today to test a bug and if you were logged in at the time it might have done funny things with your settings. Not using dakka (or having any dakka windows open) for 30 minutes might reset any glitches that could have occurred. Sorry about the glitch but dont worry, we have not changed any policies and DCMs can still block out all ads (minor glitches aside!).
