Re:Loaded dice& cheaters. How do you catch them?

It hardly seems reasonable to test every die people use in 40k. Especial as the canny cheater would not use all loaded dice, but mix them into are larger amount of similar looking dice. Say, 25:75. This way he skews his dice notably, without actually being notable.

I don't think theres anyway to catch these guys. My policy though is if they want to win that bad, let em. No one actually respects someone who wins through luck. Similarly, there's little loss of status when you lose to luck.

-Leo037

Re:Loaded dice& cheaters. How do you catch them?

The only loosers are the cheaters. Their game experience will not be as good and the other player will usually be motivated to improve their army/tactics anyway when they lose, whether they knew they were cheated against or not. In the short term they may enjoy cheating but long term they'll lose interest and leave the hobby anyway. Only effective if money or something was involved but if that's the case games tend to be watched more closely anyway. If they were cxheating at a tourny most others will be experienced and will usually clock onto unusually high proportions of rolls coming up continuously. I know I spot a good(or bad) roll from the one throw, never mind EVERY TIME. You know a 3+ means an average of 2/3rds, If somones getting 25% higher everytime they'll be picked up. Good rolls in a normal game tend to usually balance with poor rolls. How many times have you hit unusually high only to have lots of 1's when rolling to wound......

Ordinary dice (Chessex) are biased towards 1. Casino dice are not detectably biased, so they throw fewer 1s than Chessex = more 6s.

Don't give up on your Callidus dice yet. Slowly but surely they are getting charged up with better probabilities.

It's why when you microwave a jelly donut (one that you didn't put in the freezer) the donut itself is cold but the jelly is like magma.

If you spin a loaded die it will spin and fall awkwardly. That's the way I've seen it done. Pretty effective. Everyone I play with buys all their dice from the same company and the same store though. We've accidentally made dice selection uniform. If it becomes a problem tell that cheaty face to buy some new dice (see through ones).

I don't know about you, but that is definitely not the case with my dice. I'd be willing to bet that they aren't very well balanced, but 29% is absurd.
Re:Loaded dice& cheaters. How do you catch them?

Maybe not 1 out of 3, but try 4 and see how often Chessex Dice rolls a one. The report seems solid as written, so I have no reason to argue against it.

The reality is that it's not possible to avoid people who want to cheat. And my solution of finding a good gaming group won't help people in a tournament setting. If you encounter a cheater, it sucks, but I'm not sure how I would go about it.

I have met other players in my time who have done the whole "move a squad, unmove the squad, move the squad again, unmove the squad again, and move the squad again" thing (while pretending to really think about what his strategy is) which somehow magically puts the squad 10-12 inches away from its original position when it was only supposed to be able to move 6 inches. Then there's the after movement "spread the squad out to max coherency" which gains the squad another couple of more inches. I don't want to deal with people like that, so I let them have their win and never play with them again.

I've never suspected someone of using loaded dice, though. Perhaps a tournament forcing everyone to use CLEAR dice would solve that problem. And if your opponent pulls out his casino style dice, then you should pull out yours. It's all about being fair, right?

Just to share an experience, I once played in a RTT against an Imperial Guard who I believe used loaded dice.
Re:Loaded dice& cheaters. How do you catch them?

There was a 2v 2 game last weekend in which one player was using a terminator only army (plus vehicles and dreads). By the end of turn two the other three players, including his friend who was on his team, packed up their stuff and started another game. The termy player was then asked to leave the store and not return by the Indy owner. I inquired what happened after my game had finished and found out that he had drilled out and painted his dice so that the 1's now were 5's...

LOL

Why you would even attempt that is beyond me. Did he really think that no one would notice that he had never lost a single termy to a bad save the entire game when hit by small arms fire? Especially since the 1 and 5 sides of a die are side by side. I'm surprised no one noticed before the end of turn two that he hadn't rolled a single one or that there were two fives on all of his dice.

Silly cheaters.

That might be interesting.[/quote]

Well, after a little research, it seems that this might be possible, but I don't think a microwave is the tool for the job.

Note: I am in no way endorsing cheating, and take no responsibility for any bans or beatings that may occur as a result of tampering with dice. Don't try this at home. That said:

The internets seem to tell me that most plastic dice are made from polymethylmethacrylate. This has a melting point not too far above the boiling point of water; one could easily melt such a die with any number of kitchen appliances. Microwaves are probably not suitable; they work by inducing rotation of polar molecules, and while PMMA is fairly polar for an organic molecule, it's significantly less polar than water (which does most of the work of absorbing the energy of a microwave oven when you cook food). More importantly, in a die methylmethacrylate units are linked into polymer chains forming a solid block and have very little freedom to rotate. If you were going to redistribute the weight of some dice, I think a regular oven would work much better.

Of course, I don't know how significant a weight distribution one could achieve without visibly deforming the dice, and any method that tests the balance of a weighted die (like dropping it in water) will catch any die that's been deformed enough to have a real impact on a game.
