				<description><![CDATA[ In episode 8 the D6G team discuss their preview session of Dungeons and Dragons 4.0 in great detail.  We also cover the common Organized Play methods players use to get folks together for war gaming.<br /> <br /> Plus the usual dose of 'not too horrible' humor. 				<description><![CDATA[ Wow, I have to say that the more I hear about 4th edition D&D the more interested I am.<br /> <br /> I think the idea that pen and paper is now taking cues from its decendant - MMO's is facinating and a great way for gaming to continue to evolve into new and better things.<br /> <br /> Still think I will love Serenity Best ( or the whole Cortex System really ) but 4th ed looks very cool.<br /> <br /> good show again Russ(&criag&hollywood), fast editing too--- impressive <img src="/s/i/a/c944477abc92c1c101da485e07ff06d8.gif" border="0">]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ Hi, wanted to make a few comments on your last couple of shows.  To start off with, great shows.  I listen to just about all the wargaming podcasts out there, but yours seems to be the only one that consistantly "discusses" different aspects of the hobby.  The rest of the podcasts do great reviews, or talk about their projects, but none of them actually go in depth like you do.  So keep it up, great stuff that I look forward to.<br /> <br /> Episode #7<br /> I'm sure you've already gotten emails about this, but in Warhammer Fantasy, melee combat does compare the attackers skill vs the defenders skill to determine the hit roll.  You had taken the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(147);'>WHFB</span> missile combat rules that only use the attacker's skill to determine the hit roll & extended it to the melee combat.<br /> <br /> Great Shadows over Camelot review.  I got that for christmas & have been a bit daunted in playing it since it seems pretty complexed.  Your review encouraged me to pull the game out again.<br /> <br /> Episode #8<br /> I totally agree about the failed campaign syndrome.  We've had it happen many times in our game group.  Unfortunately, my gaming group is now really spread out with a 1-2 hour drive between most people.  We did almost finish the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(50);'>GW</span> Denizens of the Deep underground campaign, but never played the last turn (out of 20) because the winner was so far in the lead, there was no way for anyone to beat him.  It did take us about 4 years to complete since we were usually only able to meet at conventions.<br /> <br /> I'd definately be interested in hear about your mods for the Mighty Empire game (& your X-Cam system).  I remember playing Mighty Empires in it's original form, with the paper tile hex map, & the plastic banners, castles & cities.  A friend picked up the new set & painted the hex tiles up, & it does look beautiful.  <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(50);'>GW</span>'s Specialist Games site has a copy of the original Might Empires rules for use with Warmaster, but because of the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(50);'>GW</span> site reorg, you can't get to the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(215);'>SG</span> site if you have the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(50);'>GW</span> US site as your default.  You need to delete your internet cookies & then select the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(134);'>UK</span> as your default site, & that will allow you to access the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(215);'>SG</span> site.<br /> <br /> In your discussion of D&D 4.0, you mention the online battlemat feature.  It sounds exactly like Fantasy Grounds (<a href="http://www.fantasygrounds.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.fantasygrounds.com/</a>), a computer program that allows players to do traditional pen & paper <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(345);'>RPGs</span> remotely.  I looked at it a while ago, & it was very well done.  I was hoping my gaming group would be able to use it since we were so spread out & could never organize time for all of us to get together.  But, I found that this kind of online tool is actually a lot more work to set up, & therefore not a real time saver for the GM.  There are a couple of other packages that do the same thing, but aren't quite so slick (<a href="http://www.kloogeinc.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.kloogeinc.com/</a>).<br /> <br /> I think you'd said one of your Achievements in Gaming was playing (& loosing) the Lord of the Rings Co-<span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(280);'>op</span> board game?  Don't feel bad.  From what I understand, it's REALLY hard to win.  A friend has the game & has played it a number of times & never won.  He bought his copy off someone else & that person actually got to play it with Knizia.  Apparently, that game with Knizia was the only time the original owner had won the game.  So, while it's lots of fun, if you can only win by playing it with the game's designer, it must be really tough.<br /> <br /> On a technical note, it seemed that some of your transitions between segments overlapped the ending of the previous one, making the final comments hard to hear (like the intro music for the Bollywood Minute in #8).  It's happened 2-3 times in #7 & 8.<br /> <br /> I'd like to make a more general comment about the shows overall.  I know you can only speak about what you know, but the way you present your discussions, a non-gamer would think there's only <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(50);'>GW</span>, <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(194);'>PP</span> & <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(299);'>FoW</span> (with a bit of <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(170);'>B5</span> & Wings of War).  In your discussion of deployment, there were many other methods that weren't covered (deployment on blinds, hidden deployment, etc).  Obviously, if you haven't come across them, you can't discuss them, but it was kind of presented as "these are THE methods of deployment" as opposed to "these are SOME of the methods of deployment".  So, you might want to either bring other gaming systems into your discussions so they don't seem so restricted, or let your listeners know there's lots of other options out there beyond the big 3.<br /> <br /> & finally, I got Tannhauser recently & am quite eager to play it.  It looks very pretty.  I did have some of pretty bad paint jobs on some of the figures (big red sploch caked on Eva Kramer's arm), & am in discussion with <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(386);'>FFG</span> to see if the figures could be replaced. 				<description><![CDATA[ I certainly enjoyed this episode as I pretty much do all the others. I know I have been waiting for the newest edition the first time I heard news that it was going to happen.   The more <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(345);'>rpg</span> podcasts I listen to the more  I realise how lucky I am that I can actually play 2-3 times a week not to mention playing <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(3);'>40k</span> or fantasy as well.   Certainly with my friends and I we do prefer the more rules heavy systems (I believe the term is crunchy but I could be wrong.)<br /> But soon enough I will have them in my hands then I get to run the demos on world <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(326);'>dnd</span> day (WOOT!) (good luck trying to find them, so I am including the link to the announcment below.)<br /> <br /> <br /> Im pretty upset about how this was handled. Im not angry not about the delay, hell all software is delayed anymore, im angry that they still have not made a public anouncement or changed the main site. For something this major ( really the main reason I bought it since i have no way to play <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(345);'>rpgs</span> without somekind of online play) its a shame they did not make a greater effort to get the word out.<br /> <br /> Anyway, if you just want the books, go get em, they are great. 				<description><![CDATA[ There was a huge poop storm on the (stupidly-named) Gleemax 4E fourms.  The poor sap in charge posted about what was going on and got totally flamed for the next 3 days.  Those threads have since been culled and moved, but still have a ton of rants about launch date, feelings of bait and switch, and pricing.  WotC really dropped the ball with this one, they had a golden opprotunity (and still do) but seriously dropped the ball on this one.]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ Thanks for the heads up Russ, that apparently went up late Tuesday, after I made my blog post. I should have checked again before posting here. I am glad they finally updated the main site with some notification, at least that shows they are reacting even if slowly.<br /> <br /> It just makes me sad because the game is such a triumph, but there is just no excuse for not having that notice up on the main site BEFORE the books went on sale, not 3 days afterward. Just seems like such a cluster, I guess they really got in over their head with this whole online thing.  <br /> <br /> I hope it is just a bump in the road, and hope that the dndinsder service that eventually launches is as advertised. If so, Im sure I will still be first in line to pony up my credit card. The idea of being able to role play agian with such high quality tools and such an interactive experience on top of such a good ruleset,,, ahhh well perhaps it was just too good to be true.<br /> <br /> I will keep my fingers crossed. In the meantime at least I got a good read. ]]></description>

I had not even thought about D&D for almost 20 years. Even when I owned a store and stocked it, I never considered playing it. <br /> <br /> Now they have me running to the store eager to drop my Benjamin to buy the books and just waiting to sign up for the subscription service so I can make my character on the cool character vizualizer, find a group and play on the virtual tabletop with my customized miniature.... Damn man I was ready to sign up for the full year subscription. <br /> <br /> Now, in all likleyhood, by the time this thing is finally released I will probably be obsessing over the new <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(69);'>IG</span> codex, or absorbed in Warhammer Online, and wont even notice that the service finally went online. <br /> <br /> I hope not, actually Im sure Russ will help to make sure I know when it goes online, but im sure there are a lot of people who will be turned away dissapointed from this never to look back again.<br /> <br /> And that is just really sad.]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ I think the online tools were something that WotC was really setting themselves up to fail with.<br /> <br /> The 3.0 edition electronic support (there was a character creator CD packed with some Player's Handbooks. and promised 'eTools') was overall very poor. Software was extremely late, buggy, and performed poorly. Fan replacements filled most of the objectives and were cheap... but WotC went after them. One pretty good Java-based character creation tool had to excise support for Star Wars <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(341);'>d20</span> because the license terms [i]might[/i] have caused problems. <br /> <br /> Anyway, after this (which probably could be called a 'fiasco') the 4th edition stuff really needs to be on-time and performing at or above expectations. Making the digital components such a part of the marketing is defintiely a huge gamble.<br /> <br /> (I recently read an article about WotC's problems with their Magic online system as well... The may need to seriously rethink their development organization for such things.)]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ I would not put much stock in any company that offers any online programs.   Too many stories about my friends buying thier computer games that need several patches just to work properly, which leads me to believe that often times those that dabble in them underestimate the time it takes to bring something to a usable form to the mass market.<br /> I never even looked at the cd with 3 and WoTc are not the only company to put cds in thier <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(345);'>rpgs</span> but I have yet to use any of them.   I would say it is foolish to base your buying into a system based on online tools.  But then this will no doubt have the posters filling the D&D forums with all sorts of hate like they do with every new edition.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> ]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ A lot of articles seem to indicate that WotC is "betting the farm" on the online components. as the big 'gimick' for 3.0 was the openness, now the big gimmick is online support. Buying a book will 'unlock' additional online goodise via tools... Possibly an attempt to make book-sharing or used books less desirable, too!]]></description>

				<description><![CDATA[ I admit I am not sure about thier plan for 4th is really. But it could be that even the biggest of the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(345);'>rpg</span> companies is feeling the competition from computer and console games.  <br /> I have to say that there is alot of competition for any <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(345);'>rpg</span> and certainly they are probably trying to compete.    I know myself I tend to be more selective about the <span class="glossaryitem" onmouseover='gp(345);'>rpg</span> books I buy but that is more a problem with space than anything else.<br /> ]]></description>
