The D6 Generation Episode 14: Gen Con 2008 details and In Depth interview with Matt Wilson

In Episode 14 the D6G team gets into the details of Gen Con Indy 2008. We delve into the nature of the con with questions like "Which vendors had the strongest presence?" and "Were certain types of games on the rise or decline?"

But the best part of this super long episode, we think, is the extensive (over an hour) interview with Matt Wilson, the man behind Privateer Press. We feel this is a must listen for all games, regardless of game system, as Matt goes through his history in the game industry, and how he went from game idea to game production, and all the bumps in the middle.

All that and our usual 'not too horrible' humor, with features such as:

- When Wives Attack
- Rapid Fire
- The Hollywood Minute
- New Contests
- & More

Be sure to check out episode 14 at:

http://www.TheD6Generation.com

Link to thread about our prior episode:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/215968.page

Just finished listening to it. Great episode. Loved the interview.

I posted this advice in your webpage, but I'll post it again here.

I had a press pass as well. Check out the press room. Free bottled water, soft drinks and coffee to those with press passes. Also the room is made available for you to conduct interviews in a more quiet area.

Re:The D6 Generation Episode 14: Gen Con 2008 details and In Depth interview with Matt Wilson

I really enjoyed that interview. Craig, that must have taken some balls to sit in front of Matt Wilson and ask some of those more controversial questions. It's one thing for people to debate it on forums but to sit there with matt right in front of you and that took some guts. That's the very thing I'm always wishing 40k radio would do.

It was great because although it's controversial you werent confruntational. It's questions like that, that every one wants to hear about from the person who wrote it and to hear the reasons and it makes sense when you hear them explain it in person. Keep it up.

Hollywood, a lot of great questions too. I like the way you bring more of a detailed explaination out of people rather than the shorthand explainations that we gamers normally use. There are things that people assume other people know and its always good to hear things explained fully.

Russ, I feel for you dude. I hope you get a lot of brownie points for the camping trip.

I've been fiddling with my settings and can just about make out Matt W. It was worth the effort! WWA is, as ever, the best segment on the podcast! The contests sound fun - shame I can't do poetry or music worth a squit... But I look forward to hearing from wittier composers than I. And more on GenCon... I must admit I crapped myself laughing with you about the "pole dancing" thing... Shoot! Got to be the best moment in recent podcasting history! No contest! I was listening to it on my "buds" in bed, and woke the wife up with all my snortling and guffawing.... she wasn't amused! But I was!

Exquisite!

The D6 Generation Episode 14: Gen Con 2008 details and In Depth interview with Matt Wilson

Hey, guys, thanks for all the kind words, and for coming here to comment! We all really appreciate the feedback, and we try to give every comment its due consideration.

In defense of Spencer and Philip over at 40K radio and their interviews of GW luminaries, I was talking to Jeff Carroll from Podhammer (check out the next episode, I hear they have a great guest > ), and I learned that Philip and Spencer had to submit a massive list of questions to GW, and only about 60% were returned as acceptable, and they weren't allowed to ask any follow up questions.

It's a crazy way to run a business, but there you go.

On the other hand, Matt Wilson sat with us, cold and without ANY sort of preconditions, and we just talked for over an hour and a half. He was honest, funny, and open, and an absolute dream to interview.

To the point where I felt like we were just three guys hanging out, and often I didn't realize I was asking one of those tough questions until it was out and I saw the look on his and Hollywood's faces.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, keep 'em coming, and DON'T sell yourself short on ANY contest! EVERYONE should try!

I'm not a fast swimmer, but after collecting a wall of ribbons and trophies in high school I learned an important lesson: You don't have to be the best or the fastest, you just have to be the best and the fastest who showed up.

Damn, man, throw together a freaking limerick, for God's sake!

Or a Haiku!

We're talking 12 PAINTED metal miniatures here! This could be the core of a new Hordes army! For FREE!

Did I mention PAINTED?!?!?!?!!?

We've had some really good entries, but the field is still WIDE open. And you can't win if you don't try.

Oh, and thanks for staying on topic, guys. Over at the PP forums they've tried to do a thread about the episode twice, and now we've got over 12 pages of "plastic sucks! Codexes suck! They're not going to be Codexes! Plastic is cool!"

Legitimate debating points, especially given Matt's open answers during the interview.

But I was just hoping for some constructive criticism or props, man!

I mean, c'mon! Didn't we just snag the interview of the year with the guy who INVENTED their favorite game?????

Just sayin' . . .

Thanks again, guys, and Keep On Gaming!!!

~Craig

PS-I'm on my way to pick up my copy of the Cutthroat Caverns expansion Deeper and Darker.

Nyah, Nyah.

~c
In defense of Spencer and Philip over at 40K radio and their interviews of GW luminaries, I was talking to Jeff Carroll from Podhammer (check out the next episode, I hear they have a great guest > ), and I learned that Philip and Spencer had to submit a massive list of questions to GW, and only about 60% were returned as acceptable, and they weren't allowed to ask any follow up questions.
Heard your podcast with Jeff, good stuff. (wont spoil it, people need to sign up for the inner circle for that one and tonnes more over at podhammer).

I can fully appreciate 40k radio's position. I really love their work, I'm a FB & PIC and advocate their podcasts (and yours) to all others who will listen. When I wrote that post I knew that they had that problem where everything is pre-screened, maybe I worded it badly I should have wrote "That's the very thing I'm always wishing 40k radio could do."

It's just sad that GW is just a marketing machine now and not willing to come down from their tower (have you read White Dwarf recently?). It's something a business does, I know, but they would make the game more approachable to fans if they were willing to be open and honest like Matt Wilson was. Also it makes the interview more interesting. I guess GW and more specifically the key developers have been burned in the past by crazed fans but I think the podcasts (d6G, podhammer, 40kradio and TWIW) are very sophisticated and professional in their interviews and even though they may pose hard questions the podcasters would still handle it in a professional manner.

I'm seriously considering starting up a warmahine force soon after that not because of any disappointment in GW but because, like you guys were saying the podcast, that I like to support games where I feel that the company is genuinally interested in and get involved with their fans. If any one knows where in sydney warmachine is played/sold please let me know.
Behind the curtain: Rapid Fire takes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours to write, depending on how inspired I feel versus how interestest I am in the topics. Sometimes I get sidetracked doing the research and end up reading articles for an hour or so, collecting more info than I could ever put into the skit.

The tongue twistsers, however, are a complex web of inspiration, perspiration, blind luck, wishful thinking, and a secret ingredient I will never reveal to anyone who doesn't first ply me with much Guinness and can't nicely fill out a chainmail bikini.
Are you sure you want to make the chainmail bikini a stipulation?
The D6 Generation Episode 14: Gen Con 2008 details and In Depth interview with Matt Wilson
Yeahm it seems a shame that GW is apparently only prepared to face the world through a carefully filtered layer of spin orchestrated by its own marketing machine.

It just amazes me in this information age that we live in that a large(-ish) corporation like them can be so naive? Don't they realise that in this world of Internet 2.0 it is no longer enough to save your reputation by ducking the hard questions. I would have thought they would realise that the hard questions still get asked, and in the absence of an official anwser, all sorts of opinion and rumour gets postulated in its stead.

Its almost as if GW are ashamed of the truth, and are somehow too embarrassed to talk about it...?

They may not be, but in the absense of their saying anything to the contrary its the assumption I am going to run with

The D6 Generation Episode 14: Gen Con 2008 details and In Depth interview with Matt Wilson

Great episode guys. It made my drive to Vegas pass very, very quickly, although trying to hear that Matt Wilson interview with the noise of freeway-speed engine noise was quite a challenge!

I know it's on your radar and they sure ain't cheap, but you've *got* to get a directional and a clip-on microphone for future field pieces.

The interview with Matt Wilson was still amazing despite the poor audio quality and I wish I had time for another miniature game in my life (and I that I liked the style of art and rules in Warmachine) because I totally think that PP is a great responsive company and I would love to support them.

But I do have to say. . .

. . .they're thinking about an army scale game. . .

. . .and Warmachine is moving more towards army based releases. . .

. . .I had no idea my predictions would start coming true so soon!

I simply love your show

but (you knew that was coming, didn't you)

I skipped the Matt Wilson interview completely. I'm am sure he had a lot of interesting things to say, but the audio quality ruined it for me. A soon as I head the convention going on in the background I skipped forward.

I loved the rest of the show and especially "When wives attack". WWA is an excellent help in introducing my female friends to games in general.

Keep it up, guys!
To be honest, in the world of Internet 2.0 no one would actually take any notice of the answers to the "hard questions" even if they were given.

They would continue to believe what opinion they want to believe and continue to shout it on TEH FORUMZ as loudly as possible.
Yeah, the haterz will always hate and the fanbois will always be fans (right up until they turn into haterz), but in the middle there are an awful lot of sensible mature gamers who just appreciate straight up front honesty.

I listened with interest to all 3 of GW's official podcasts, and will continue to do so. I accept their discussion and enjoy it. But this kind of "official" material will never have the same "credibility" that an unrestriced interview with a competent independent interviewer will have. Sure, they may be scared of being ambushed by some nerd freaking out at them with a "why do you kill babies?" question. But listen to the podcasts guys - 40k Radio and Podhammer or D6G aren't going to do that to them! They are going to be professional and respectful.

Heck if even stupid politicians can see the value of being interviewed by Jeremy Paxman, then surely someone at GW has the balls to give an unrestricted interview to the D6G? Or maybe they don't "have a pair"? (See what I did there...?)

Personally I like "Full Metal Fantasy" and would find a plastic Warmachine game intrinsically less attractive than a metal one. BUT, hearing Matt be frank and straight forward and open about all sorts of issues, makes me inclined to be supportive of such a transition and not hostile to it as I might have been without such comments.

For every rabid fanboi or hater there are numerous silent warriors who's only action is often to vote with their wallet... The more credibility GW can restore the better. And in the absence of evidence, then there is only the evidence of absence...

We are fans of the game, we want to like the people who make them. Privateer Press (hitherto) has made it easy to like them. GW these days seems to find it difficult to make us like them as a company, although they are taking baby steps.

I like the podcast, as my I-tunes review said. (Thanks for the shout-out for my shout-out, for which I'm now shouting out. Infinite loop?)

As a non-PP player, I still found the Matt Wilson interview very interesting.
We've got our eye on a nice piece of remote recording gear, we just need to save our pennies.

But I'm confident we'll have it before our next remote recording event.

I was really bummed about the sound quality with Matt too, because the interview was so interesting and I knew some folks wouldn't be able to suffer through the sound quality.

Yak: I was thinking about many of your comments about PP in the past when listening to the interview. It will be interesting to see how Privateer navigates this stage in their business cycle.
