The D6 Generation Ep 16: Monsterpocalypse designer interivew & Warhammer Online

In Episode 16 the D6G crew gets to interview one of Privateer Press's game designers, Erik Yaple. Erik tells us about what he does at Privateer along with his efforts on Monsterpocalypse.

But first, Raef and Russ discuss the hot new MMORPG, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. What makes the MMO set in Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy setting different? Why is it worth a look?

All that and our usual 'not too horrible' humor, with features such as:

- When Wives Attack
- Rapid Fire
- The Hollywood Minute
- Contests
- & More

Link to the show: http://www.thed6generation.com/index.php?post_id=386074

Link to thread about last Episode:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/218214.page

The D6 Generation Ep 16: Monsterpocalypse designer interivew & Warhammer Online

Ha!

"When your wife says 'let's get a game', you have to strike while the iron is hot!"

So true... Man, I'm still kicking myself for the time I was showing my wife the Forgeworld Great Gnarlocs and she said "I'll buy one for you." Feeling a sudden bout of geek-guilt about letting my wife spend money on Forgeworld, I said no, I didn't really want one.... The next day, I realized that I had been a fool, but no matter how much I tried to convince her it was a great idea, the moment had passed. *Sigh*

On the good side, I think a few more trips to the game store might convince her to start a Demon Army.

Kryten: "Actually sir, we don't ever have existed here anymore, but this is hardly the time to be conjugating temporal verbs in the past impossible never-tense."

Red dwarf is the greatest sci fi show ever. loved the opening

Great show. War sounds interesting but the thing for me is always the fact that it's a game that you pay to buy it then you have to pay to play it in subscription fees. That's always a turn off for me.

However I hope War is successful because I think the royalties for the game should help to get GW out of the trouble they're in.

What, of a 3 hours episode?? I doubt it...

Well done lads, another cracker.

Russ: I was interested in your comments about story being important to you in MMOs and how you appreciated how WAR brings the player along in the quests. What is your take on Eve-Online where there are almost two totally different story arcs going on - The fluff that the company created, and the player driven conflicts and so forth that make up much of the "story" in unregulated space.

btw: 3 hours was the right lenght to get me both to and from Berlin from London on the plane, and the drive home afterwards.

In June I have to fly to Orlando. Any chance of an eight hour extravaganza around the week of the 20th? Just thought I'd give you some warning!
GAH!!! Listening to the intro to your review of WAR was the 1st time I actually tried shouting at you through my MP3 player.

"... Any WoW player worth thier honest opinion knows that the grandfather of all this fantasy IP is GW"

WTF?!?!?! Neither of which are Warhammer Fantasy Battles, nor I think, Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing Game.
Well, I'm afraid that was a bit of a "Hollywoodism" (aka Raefism). What Raef was trying to say was that WoW draws HEAVILY from the GW IP. In fact, both Starcraft and the Warcraft series do. Blizzard has stated as much in the past, and there are little hints. For example if you click on some of the dwarves enough in Orcs and Humans they'll say things like "I bought my warhammer for 40k."

Of course the grand daddy of the core of this kind of thing is initally Tolkien and D&D. But the World of Warcraft, with it's dwarven helicopters, rifles, and big bottom toothed orces was clearly influenced by GW. That was his only point.

The reason we felt the need to state this is that SO many vid game fans unfamiliar with GW have made statements that WAR has copied many ideas (specifically dwarven flyers) from WoW, when, in fact, it is the reverse.
The reason we felt the need to state this is that SO many vid game fans unfamiliar with GW have made statements that WAR has copied many ideas (specifically dwarven flyers) from WoW, when, in fact, it is the reverse.
Cannot argue with that at all, I've heard similar comments and it gives me the shivers. Penny Arcade had a brilliant comic on this exact topic.
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/4/10/i-hope-you-like-text/

Well, D6G saw me nicely down to Bradford (and most of the way back). Very nice. Another exquisite episode of WWA there. Now, why don't they expand the segment. Maybe a session on scrapbooking and another on Abba-related movies. Perhaps even quilting?

No?

OK then. J/k!

Seriously though, another good episode guys. Seriously.

And props for the interview. Interesting and entertaining.

I really, really hope you get Jervis on there someday!

Re:The D6 Generation Ep 16: Monsterpocalypse designer interivew & Warhammer Online

Thanks Russ

Below is the reason wein Wales Shun Columbas Day

The discovery of America.... by a Welsh Prince?

In fourteen hundred and ninety-two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

Whilst it was generally believed that Columbus was the first European to discover America in 1492, it is now well known that Viking explorers reached parts of the east coast of Canada around 1100 and that Norwegian Leif Erikson's Vinland may have been an area that is now part of the United States. What is less known is that a Welshman may have followed in Erikson's footsteps, this time bringing settlers with him.

According to Welsh legend, that man was Prince Madog ab Owain Gwynedd.

A Welsh poem of the 15th century tells how Prince Madoc sailed away in 10 ships and discovered America. The account of the discovery of America by a Welsh prince, whether truth or myth, was apparently used by Queen Elizabeth I as evidence to the British claim to America during its territorial struggles with Spain. So who was this Welsh Prince and did he really discover America before Columbus?

Owain Gwynedd, king of Gwynedd in the 12th century, had nineteen children, only six of whom were legitimate. Madog (Madoc), one of the bastard sons, was born at Dolwyddelan Castle in the Lledr valley between Betws-y-Coed and Blaenau Ffestiniog.

On the death of the King in December 1169, the brothers fought amongst themselves for the right to rule Gwynedd. Madog, although brave and adventurous, was also a man of peace. In 1170 he and his brother, Riryd, sailed from Aber-Kerrik-Gwynan on the North Wales Coast (now Rhos-on-Sea) in two ships, the Gorn Gwynant and the Pedr Sant. They sailed west and landed in what is now Alabama in the USA.

Prince Madog then returned to Wales with great tales of his adventures and persuaded others to return to America with him. They sailed from Lundy Island in 1171 and were never heard of again.

They are believed to have landed at Mobile Bay, Alabama and then travelled up the Alabama river along which there are several stone forts, said by the local Cherokee Indians to have been constructed by "White People". These structures have been dated to several hundred years before Columbus and are of a similar design to Dolwyddelan Castle in North Wales. Were they built by Madog and his fellow settlers?

Early explorers and pioneers found evidence of Welsh influence among the tribes of Indians along the Tennessee and Missouri Rivers. In the 18th century an Indian tribe was discovered that seemed different to all the others that had been encountered before. Called the Mandans this tribe were described as white men with forts, towns and permanent villages laid out in streets and squares. They claimed ancestry with the Welsh and spoke a language remarkably similar to it. They fished with coracles, a type of boat still used in Wales today. It was also observed that unlike members of other tribes, these people grew white-haired with age. In addition, in 1799 Governor John Sevier of Tennessee wrote a report in which he mentioned the discovery of six skeletons encased in brass armour bearing the Welsh coat of arms.
