The D6 Generation Ep 18: Serenity RPG & Interview with designer

In Episode 18 the D6G crew puts on their brown coats and discuss the Serenity RPG in detail, after giving an overview of the concept of Role Playing Games for folks who've never had the pleasure of trying them.

But that's not all. We also get to interview Jamie Chambers, of Margaret Weis Productions (yes, the Mararet Weis from Dragonlance). Jamie designed the Serenity RPG, and developed their upcoming Cortex game system, the same system used for their Battlestar Galactica RPG. We have a nice long chat with Jamie about how he got involed in the industry, what it's like to design these games, and what future products are coming out.

All that and our usual 'not too horrible' humor, with features such as:

- When Wives Attack
- Rapid Fire
- The Hollywood Minute
- Contests
- & More

Check out our show at http://www.TheD6Generation.com

Please let us know what you think here!!

Conversation about last show: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/220296.page

The D6 Generation Ep 18: Serenity RPG & Interview with designer

It’s actually a famous tongue twister amongst theatre people, used to limber up the tongue before performances.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts
With stoutest wrists and loudest boasts
He beats his fists against the posts
And still insists he sees the ghosts

It’s fairly standard, and well known, in this form.

It was a long time ago when I read IT. Couldn’t handle the ending. A bunch of pre-teens defeating an alien monster by having sex with each other . . . no wonder they had to change the ending for the ‘movie’.

The D6 Generation Ep 18: Serenity RPG & Interview with designer
Owen's segment is an absolute hoot. A perfect mixture of humor, culture and gaming. Fits in perfectly with the other segments (WWA, HM, DEN?, etc.) that make the D6G as enjoyable as it is.
One thing I found interesting is that on the D6G Owen praises the US gaming store in that it allows new players to walk in off the street and instantly join the fun as opposed to the more 'closed' gaming clubs of the UK.

But then over on This Week In Wargaming they've been talking about how Americans are less likely to try out games from smaller manufacturers as opposed to the gaming clubs in the UK which are much more likely to do so, even saying that the people in the UK don't know how good they've got it.

So it seems as though both systems have pluses and minuses. Having a gaming store where random people can walk in and play is much more open to recruiting new faces, but at the same time you kind of need to have a common game language to speak and thus everyone playing a few 'main' games becomes more common.

Whereas in the UK if you're playing in closed private clubs it may be harder to recruit new people but because you all know and game with each other it would seem to be much more easy to introduce and play an independent game.

Although I do think it is always far to easy to throw out a giant stereotype based on your experiences alone and I think this happens far too often on podcasts and on internet forums. The fact is, in every country there are different communities of gamers who play in different ways. And if you think one particular trend in gaming isn't happening somewhere in your country I think its a pretty safe bet that you're wrong.

However most FLGS's will do special orders, so a group of gamers at a store could still order something 'off the beaten path' and play it there.

But here is the FLGS bonus:

Let's say Craig and I ordered "Uncharted Seas" (which we did) from a small game company in the UK (which it is). We could paint these models up and start playing them in our local store, say the Game Castle (which we will).

Now if we played the game at our homes, no one would see it. But if we play it in the store, the owner of the store will see it, as will all the customers. If the game play is solid, and the models look cool, and it generates a buzz, it is likely more players will ask the owner about it, he will order it, and perhaps carry it.

So playing lesser known games in a store really can help those companies. And I've no idea how playing the game in someone's house really helps them at all.

The only counter I can think to my theory would be that SOME stores may not like you playing games they don't sell. Which would be a problem. But I'm willing to bet if you spoke with the owner and ordered the product through their channels they'd be cool with letting you play there in the hope it would spure more sales.

Hi. I just want wanted to quickly add my feedback...

Firstly, I really like the podcast. My street now thinks that I am nuts as I walk to work laughing to myself! Great work, keep it up. I like the shifting focus and I am impressed that you have continued to keep it fresh.

With the greatest respect to Owen, I have to say that the 'Words from Wales' section is not my kind of thing. But, since it seems popular, I will give it another attempt. When Wives Attack continues to get better. I had my doubts about this section when it started, but the ladies seem to have become more comfortable with the idea and this part improves every week. Well done to them (but dont tell them that I said that, otherwise you guys will never hear the end of it!). But, the first time that I listened to this I felt that - to my English ear - the accents reminded me of the Pussycat Dolls... And this is an image that I have not been able to drop!

The real reason that I wanted to post was to respond to the 'Did You Ever Notice' section. This final part of the show is always interesting. I dont want to restart the entire 'points in tournaments' debate, but I did want to add my voice to a few points. I am in the 'scores for games only' group, preferring not to have 'soft scores' included.

I guess that the real question is what a tournament should actually be testing. I feel that a tournament should be a judge of the game playing ability. We have painting competitions, general knowledge quizs and other events for other aspects. I do think that it is possible for a tournament to be a more 'all round' event for the hobby, but I think that the 'GW system' only goes half way. I would either like to see the soft scores removed, or have a 'triathalon system' testing different aspects in different categories instead of grouping the scores together. If you really dont want to see unpainted armies, simply have that as a rule, or something like 'unpainted armies can play, but cant place in the results'.

Also, the example of an football team was given, but I think that this is an incorrect analogy. It was said that 'the Dallas Cowboys currently dont like to play offence, is it OK if we just let them earn points for defensive plays for a while?'. But, this is different. A better example would be 'the Dallas Cowboys are low in the tables this season, we should add points at the end of the game for the team that has the nicest uniform'.

Sports dont have these soft scores. It doesnt matter who has the nicest cheerleaders (at least, for game points), the best ironed clothes, the most efficient accountant or anything else. Why do tournaments for wargames bring in these additional factors and make them affect the outcome of the generalship of the force?

This also brings in another point... People who 'outsource' their army painting. It is OK for me to get someone else to paint my army and get tournament points for this, but if I brought in Allessio to play play one of my games for me this is wrong? Even though I get the points for some elses effort both ways.

In my opinion, tournament organisers need to explicitly state whether they are testing 'the hobby' in all its aspects, or generalship specifically on the table. And, if they are testing the hobby, more thought should go into it regarding how this is done. Throwing a paint score into the generalship total doesnt do this.

Anyway, just my opinions. Thanks again.

I love it.

For the record, I agree with you on this. I think there should be separate prizes for all categories, and none should try to merge them.

We're received a lot of comments about that segment, and Craig will attempt to clarify his position at the start of Ep 19.
