The D6 Generation Ep 22: TempleCon Interviews

In Episode 22 we interview Grant Garvin. Grant is the main man behind TempleCon, one of the largest gaming convensions in the North East. Grant shares how he got started with Templecon, and some of the lessons learned. As well as what to look forward to in TempleCon 2009.

Later we chat with Andrew "Hacksaw76" Hartland. Andrew is a Privateer Press Pressganger and drops some details on the extensive Warmachine and Hordes events that will be run at TempleCon 2009.

All that and our usual 'not too horrible' humor, with features such as:

- When Wives Attack
- Rapid Fire
- The Hollywood Minute
- Contests
- & More

Link to Show: http://thed6generation.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=415611

Please let us know what you think!

Link to prior episode: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/224257.page

Enjoying the show - Loved Russ in his "Homer Simpson" voice saying "No Words from Wales this week"- will be back with contest winner next time. Over 50 entries so far - which is fab odds if you are playing Russian Roullette but going to be a big draw in a lottery.

Wales is yes part of the Uk which also covers Scotland England and Northern Ireland. Ireland as has been pointed out is its own country and has its own ITUNES. There are some Welsh based ITUNES reviews on the UK site Including mine. Anyway Merry Christmas Folks and see you in the new Year.
Diolch

Owen

Good episode (as always, though I didn't understand the TempleCon part and skipped over most of that) and the Twilight review was especially enjoyable. I was invited to go see the movie a week ago and didn't really know anything about it, but one glance at the movie poster told me it was not for me.

The 'merry christmas' segment at the end was a bit worrying, though. Strange what people can get hung up on.

God jul!

The D6 Generation Ep 22: TempleCon Interviews

I agree to both "Strange what some people can get hung up on."

AND that mostly Those People probably don't listen to the show.

The fact that here in America we have schools where teachers aren't allowed to SAY Merry Christmas, never mind decorate etc., is bizarre to me. Not my school, luckily, but many.

The thing about anyone who'd take offense to a Merry Christmas is it wouldn't matter if they heard the segment or not, because they are ALWAYS so utterly convinced of their own santctity (VERY ironic, given the rest of their argument), that I'm just crazy for even caring.

I just took 50 students into Boston (largest close city to us) for a lovely Italian dinner and a play. As they filed off the bus tonight to go off for their vacations I was very happy to be able to say "Merry Christmas" to my students who celebrate that, "Happy Hannukah" to my Jewish students, and "Have a good vacation" to my one Hindu student. And every one of them, much to the shock of several other teachers, said "Merry Christmas" to me.

I like my world better than the TPs.

Merry Christmas, Every One.

Re:The D6 Generation Ep 22: TempleCon Interviews

It's possible he isn't, strictly speaking. It immediately struck me as wrong, with the example that sprung to mind being Turkey.

However, I had a quick google, and
"Turkey's "laïcité" does not call for a strict separation of religion and the state, but describes the state's stance as one of "active neutrality."
(thanks Wikipedia)

Turkey is a secular state, but doesn't according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secularism_in_Turkey doesn't have the exact text Craig mentioned.

It's possible that plenty of other secular states which we'd all think of as having a strict seperation of state and relgion also don't have that exact phrasing.

It does seem to be missing the point that that they do enshrine something important, which many of us would describe as the seperation of state and religion, but perhaps is more the active neutrality mentioned above.

And while I wouldn't support the views, as stated by Craig, of 'Those People', I would support seperating state and religion to the sort of extent that most modern democracies do - Turkey's current constitution being a shining example of how it should be done imo - active neutrality, not squashing religious expression, and I don't mean banning Christmas from the classroom

We can also see a country having that neutrality attacked by a religious political party in office right now in Turkey.

It's easier to give an Islamic country in these examples because most people here will see the importance of keeping religion out of goverment in that example.
It's no different in America though.

D'ya ever notice, interesting as ever

Re:The D6 Generation Ep 22: TempleCon Interviews

. . .changing the subject to something a bit lighter. . .

I was able to find a copy of 'Cutthroat Caverns' the other day so I quickly snapped it up. I played my first few games yesterday and it was indeed pretty darn awesome. We only had 3 people playing so I can't wait to see what bigger games are like.

The rules were a bit hard to follow IMHO and we did have a number of questions that we had to simply make a guess at how to play them. After the games were over I did go online and find that they have a new revised rulebook (2.0) and that seemed to answer most of our questions.

The one exception (this didn't seem to be covered in the new rules or their online FAQ) was the 'Potion of Haste' which says:

"Every time you play a card you may play two cards for the next two Rounds."

What the heck does that mean? In the end we decided to play it that you are allowed to 'SET' two 'ATTACKS' for the next two rounds as that was the only logical conclusion we could come up with as to what the card was actually trying to say.

Craig, how have you guys (or anyone else) been playing this card?

Also, we came up with a couple of house rules so that when people die they aren't out the came permanently (as this seems to ruin the game if it happens early on):

1) In between encounters when players are allowed to use potions, any player may sacrifice any number of prestige points in order to restore his/her health. For each prestige point sacrificed, their health is improved by 5 points.

2) If a player loses all of their health during an encounter (dies), they are not permanently out of the game. Instead, at the end of the encounter they died in, they automatically lose half their current prestige points (rounding up). For each prestige point lost this way, they gain 5 points of health back and they are resurrected back into the game (they can even choose to sacrifice extra prestige to gain even more life back per house rule #1 if they wish).

If anyone out there has had issues with people dying and them being bored sitting around waiting for the game to end, give these house rules a try. They still penalize players for dying pretty harshly and they still allow players to be eliminated from a particular encounter (so you can still be sneaky and eliminate a weak player in an encounter), but they make it so everyone can remain in the game until at least the final encounter.

They are much, much easier to follow than the rules that come in the box. Not only do the 2.0 rules contain errata, FAQ & way more examples than the first set of rules, but they also contain a gameplay 'flowchart' that makes the game a whole lot easier to keep track of what you should be doing and when.

I'm listening to the Bonus Episode right now, and I hope it works well for you.

The DRM thing is a bit more interesting: Apple doesn't feel like licensing the Windows DRM that would be needed to make iTunes store stuff work on a lot of other devices. It would be nice if they'd license the Apple DRM system (FairPlay) but that's a whole other issue. OTOH, Music (only music!) on iTunes labeled iTunes Plus is DRM free (albeit in a less common AAC format).

The other tip to cut cable bills is to call the cable company and threaten to leave.
The D6 Generation Ep 22: TempleCon Interviews

One for the brown coats,

I've just picked up Legends of the Old West by Warhammer historical(http://www.warhammer-historical.com/tow/books.asp) and thought considering you guys are fans of LOTR SBG and and huge fans of Firefly I reckon this would really appeal. I could see with a few small changes making that game into a Firefly variant.

Legends was the rule set (I believe) that LOTR SBG was based off of and The Alamo is what the new War of the Ring is going to be based off of (I believe). But Legends is a great game in it's own right.

Books, I would say, the same level of quality as PP books.

Old Glory minatures(http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/products.asp?cat=444) work best with it too. Perfect for the hobbiest and modder.

Keep up the brilliant shows, they are really helping me get through this tough time at work due to the financial crisis.

Thanks, Kingy. Interesting timing, too, as Raef is starting to look at historicals for some reason, and one of the games that got mentioned was this very game, so knowing him, he'll have the rulebook half-read (or wholy read, depending on your perspective) in no time!

Cool, I reckon Raef might get a kick out of priority and determing who wins a draw in a fight is determined by each player cutting a deck of cards with the player holding the highest card being the winner. Very appropriate for the wild west.

The D6 Generation Ep 22: TempleCon Interviews

Highly recommend LotW. The author, Mark Latham, cut his teeth editing the highly successful publication "Battle Games in Middle-earth" for GW, which broke many records for a part-work in the UK in terms of success. He took his in-depth knowledge of the Lotr game mechanics and turned them into a really fun Wild West game. Lots of fun, and you only need paint up a half-dozen models or so to have a viable force. In other words, read the rules, buy a couple of blisters of models from Artizan (or similar), paint them up (1 evening's work) and you're good to go!

Hey, John, thanks for the link . . . in retrospect, that would have made more sense to include.

It's a great site, by the way. VERY cool visually, and the interactive is great.

Do you guys have a release date on the game itself? I saw all the cool models but (and I'd be unkind not to preface that I'm almost a total luddite online sometimes, so it's probably me) I could not find the actual game, or a release date.

I can't wait to see the whole thing!

~Craig
