I'm taking a bit of a break from painting my Ultramarines to concentrate on a new project, an army I've wanted to work on for a long time now...the Blood Pact, from Dan Abnett's [i]Gaunt's Ghost's[/i] series of novels published by Black Library. I'll be using the Imperial Guard Codex to guide my unit choices (along with cool modeling opportunities). I know the new 'dex is coming out fairly soon, so I'll keep my early choices confined to those units that have a really good chance of not changing once it's released.

Your paint work so far is looking good, the ogryn and commander both look tops. The stalk tank, while a great conversion, is quite a bit smaller than I imagine Abnett is describing them to be. I think they are supposed to be about the same size as a salamander in length, with six legs and pilots in an "underslung glass bubble".

Still, nice stuff so far. Got much planned yet for how you plan to tackle the infantry in terms of their masks etc?

It's either too light (like this nice sentinel conversion here) or too heavy (like my stalk tank that used Leman Russ rules to rep it). Since we can't get the excatly right rules for the thing, we just have to adapt to existing rules and compromise a bit.

@Ghost, this stalk tank will be used as a Sentinel.

@ CMDante and Col Hammer, there's also the super-heavy sized "flat crabs" from the assault on Vervunhive (not technically Blood Pact, but cool none the less). I think I'll be building a variety of sizes and, as the Col. says, compromising on the rules. If I can get a dozen or so of various sizes together perhaps I can come up with a "Stalk Tank Brood" datasheet for Apocalypse.

I just finished re-reading Sabbat Matyr and I'll now have to work out plans for the SteGs, AT70 Reavers, AT83 Brigands, and the N20 half-tracks - toting flamers of course!

And by the way, could someone let me know how to create a link in my posts? The intuitive way doesn't seem to be working for me, it's that complete lack of tech-savvy kicking in.

Sentinel: I added two spacers to increase the ability for the pod to turn.

The new troopers look great- I'm especially fond of the middle one and the one on the far right. The feral face looks cool as hell and definitely fits with the descriptions in the book. Same goes with the hooded head. Any chance you plan to add the grotesque masks based on Brian Nelson's goblin faces and the great beastmen muzzles on the plastic gor and ungors? I'm not sure if that's what the guy on the far right is wearing, or if he's an abhuman (both equally fitting options for a group of renegades). I'm sure that will become apparent when you paint them.

Sculpting the masks is pretty easy too, if you did 5-7 heads you'd be sorted. It takes a little time because of the wait between stages though. Here's a few pics from my own Blood Pact log that show how I sculpted mine.

These look REALLY cool! You, sir, have successfully shamed me into working on sculpting some masks : )

While I agree that the Goblin and Gor heads are a bit too big, I think the Ungor heads fit right in there, I'll be using a few of those along the way too, just to speed things up.

@ Ghost, the sensor "block" is from the body of a heavy stubber, I used parts of the heavy stubber barrel for some of the new backpacks.

@ Vandez, why wouldn't we adopt "Basic Pacters"? It just sounds too cool ; )

You might want to consider using some ghoul heads too for the "ungor method" of masks, suitably screamy, evil looking faces.

Not sure if you were looking for my recipe for red or CMDante's.

My reds are done with a basecoat of Scab Red, highlighted with a mix of Scab Red and Blood Red (50/50) and finished with a highlight of Blood Red.

My uniforms were done with a basecoat of Dark Flesh, highlighted with a 70/30 mix of Dark Flesh/Kommando Khaki, highlight again with a 40/60 mix, highlight again with a 10/90 mix, apply a glaze of Dark Flesh/Devlan Mud mix.

More "Basic Pacters" coming soon.

Again, life conspires against the posting of pics (hopefully tonight though). Thanks for your kind words of encouragement. Just recently a friend asked me how big this army was going to be and I'm thinking now that pretty much every army has to be at least 3,000 points, maybe 2,000 for "standard" games and another 1,000 or so for Apocalypse goodness. It'll be tough fitting everything I want to do into 3,000 so I might have to push that a bit ; )

@ Sirath - I'm working on another Stalk Tank design that'll probably count as a Salamander and I'm thinking of rules for an Apocalypse data sheet for the Psyker version so chances are... I probably won't do any scarred hands, very tough to do on 28mm minis without having it look like a mistake. I'm sure I can squeeze in a Bane Blade somewhere.

@ CMDante - no thread derailing occurred, you're contributions are always welcome, particularly if it is to show us more of your cool work.

The troopers look great, brilliant use of the FW renegades coupled with cadian and catachan parts.

Your masked heads have also come out excellent, great idea to use the ungor heads, wasn't sure how well it would work at first but it certainly has. Thanks for the nod in your blog too.

The stalk tank is shaping up well, certainly got the locust theme down. This one is certainly looking much more like the stalk tanks I picture when reading the books.

• Valhallan - Militia-style (using Vahallans and Empire Militia)
• Jantine Patricians - Mechanized Grenadiers (using Stormtroopers)
• Vitrian Dragoons - Standard (using Van Saar gangers)
• The Shriven - Standard useable as either loyalist or traitor (using Steel Legion)
• 13th Penal Legion - Light Infantry (using mainly Catachans)
• Macharian 24th PDF - Standard (using Cadians)
• Macharian 6th Armored - Armored Company
• Vostroyan 5th - Standard (using, surprise, Vostroyans)
• Genswick 33rd Rifles - Standard (using Bretonnian Men-at-Arms)

I've also done two Lost and the Damned armies: The Beasts of Khargor and the Adeptus Mechanicus Expeditionary force.

So, quite a few. What can I say? I'm a fiend for the regular joe, humanity against the vast range of things that want to kill them.

I do think some of the highlights are being lost in the photos, as the reds seem uncharacteristically flat, though I can see some subtle lines here and there.

First, I'd like to thank everyone for their kind comments, constructive criticisms, and curiosity. I'll try to cover the specific questions asked:

@ Flachzange/Death By Monkeys - I'll try to get a selection of models from each "Gaunt's Ghosts-oriented" force photographed soon and posted here.

@ Ozymandias - I must admit that I'd forgotten I also painted an Elysian Droop Trooper army that actually appeared in the Taros Campaign book by Forgeworld. Any of the miniature shots are my guys, although you might not know it because they're all B&W "action" shots. In addition to these IG armies I've also painted a Pre-Heresy Death Guard army, a Black Templar army, my Legio Custodes, a Goff army of Orks, around 7,000 points of Ultramarines, plus the Tyranids I was lucky enough to have photographed for the 40K 5th Ed Rulebook. So while I have painted other 40K armies, I much prefer to paint IG ; )

@ grey_death - Yeah, I'm going to chalk up the highlights being lost to my less than perfect photography skills. The final glaze did knock a lot of the highlights back, but they're still there when looking at the models in real life. More practice for me ; )

@ jah-joshua - I'll try try to keep a hold of that attention!

The tanks on the back are great too, what I find really interesting is we both had the same idea with them both for design (though you have done more with riveting and tubing) and colour before we even discussed our projects! Great minds think alike eh?!

Shade: Charadon Granite
Base: Dheneb Stone
Highlight: P3 Menoth White Base and Menoth White Highlight
Tone (for defining eyes, scars etc): Baal Red Wash and Leviathan Purple Wash

Basically I painted most of the skin first using DS and CG mix (70:30 ish, I used a wet pallette so not really accurate mixes as I did it on the fly), then keep highlighting up until your at pure DS. Then mix DS with Menoth base and highlight more, then finally Menoth Highlight for highest points and top of head etc.

Shade any areas that need it with thin "juices" (almost consistency of very thin wash but make sure you have almost no paint on brush so you have maximum control) of CG.

Tone patches of the skin or around eyes/scars etc with some thin washes of baal red and leviathan purple.

It's great getting to see all of those amazing and well themed armies you have produced again, I can recall admiring them in WD and dreaming of one day being able to have some of my own work grace its pages.

It seems we both take inspiration from the same sources, novels and the better pieces of background material.

Also, good luck with the new baby, the nursery is looking like a room fit for a little king (or queen?) though I think the green could use some more highlights on the edges to really bring it out and add contrast!

Really inspired work on the stalk tank... I wonder if using some steel wire or brass-rod from the body/thorax, down through the limbs then drilled into some sort of scenic base (perhaps MDF board) would help hold them together for transit.

To answer your questions ghostmaker, the drums are cut from a tube with a rod inside, kind of like the way I built the backpacks. Once the glue has dried I cut a small section of the tube away and glued it to the autogun. As for the DKoK guy, that whole model is a Forgeword "Show Only" model that I picked up at a Games Day the year before last. If you can make it to a Games Day this year then you should be able to grab one.

Iirc, the rear of the stalk tank was where the 'servitor' or psyker was held inside it (to pilot it). In the concept drawings, I think it was more like an egg sac (organic). It looks like Dave has made it an armored compartment. Right now having a pole there to support it really takes some of the beauty away. Will you be mounting it onto a large base?

A large base where it's held up by it's own legs would look fantastic. Reinforced with copper or steel wire it should be okay to hold its own weight?

@ VermGho5t - glad you like it all! The metal (I assume you mean their armor?)was inspired by the recent Warriors of Chaos release and all the "dark iron" they have going on. Here's the recipe:
- Black undercoat
- heavy drybrush of Tin Bitz (with a tank brush)
- lighter drybrush of Boltgun Metal (with a tank brush)
- heavy wash of Badab Black
- patchy wash of Thraka Green (ie. only put it in random patches)
- heavy wash of Devlan Mud
- pick out the edges with Mithril Silver

@ CMDante - always pushing me ; ) I'm working with a friend on a couple of other projects and we might work on a clear resin bubble for the next one or two. I'd love to insert an already painted servitor wired into the best into a clear resin mold of the underbelly, that would be cool.

@ BrotherStynier - The next task is to get some of the armored elements done (the STeG4s, AT-70s, AT-83s, N-20 halftracks) but I'm keen to do a Usurper (originally in Honor Guard I think) as well, and the friend I mentioned above is working on a Locust, the little vector fighters mentioned briefly in Sabbat Martyr. Is Khrel Kas Obarkon from Double Eagle? It has been a while since I read that one.

No offense taken at all Dante, I know I kind of cheaped out on this one for time purposes and also for getting a sense of scale. I do like that you prompt me to go that little bit further in directions that I know will make me happier with the final result, but might have avoided for [insert lame excuse here]. I think thereare a bunch of things that I've learned with this first Stalk Tank that'll mean I can spend less time on them (already figured them out) for the next couple that I'd like to do. That way I can spend some time getting the bubble right (or close to meeting my vision). If you've got some thoughts feel free to send them through.

On the Stegadon Conversion Challenge I'm thinking of a Khorneate Warshrine for Warhammer. A beefy Marauder champion atop the beast, wrestling with the chains that control it, a cage/brazier of skulls, metallic plates, and lots of metal wrapped horns.

I'm sure the SL will make an appearance eventually, the Blood Pact manages to get their hands on near everything else, why should it be an exception? I believe the Locust was also mentioned in Double Eagle, I'm not sure though. Well you don't really need to go beyond GoT or Sabbat Martyr, everything else just gives you room to expand upon the army later should you choose to.

It was a lot of fun putting the base together, and quite tricky to find a solution to the heavy body/spindly legs problem.

I want to paint the Stalk Tank armor plates with Dark Flesh, the legs and other mechanical parts with the same metallics as my troopers, the Chaos star on its back with Khemri Brown/Kommando Khaki, but I'm stuck with which color I should use on the armor trim pieces. They are the thin strips around the edges of the armor plates (similar to the Defiler armor trim).

Any thoughts?

For your strips along the outside of the model, I think that if you painted it to look like a metal that has oxidized to a greenish hue, it would not only contrast nicely from your red troopers, but will also serve as some horrible Chaos camouflage. I'll add a picture of what I mean.

As for the trim on the armor plates... the same metallic you use for the troopers and that you're planning to use for the leg mechanisms would probably look pretty darn good on the trim. It does keep the palette of the model a bit limited, but that seems like it could be a good thing, considering the military practicality of the Blood Pact...

Nice work on the tanks, the truck isn't bad also. I like the freehand and how... thorny you made the symbols.

One thing, the multilaser on the Truck seems a bit out of place. Perhaps a dual-linked heavy bolter? Just a thought. It seems sticking out awkardly, and poor Joe Guardsman wielding the damn thing looks a bit fazzled by it.

Maybe he's making up for something, maybe not.

it's not easy to pull off a minimalist approach in these times of HUGE expectations(speakin' as a pro-painter who tries to compete against the top painters with my old school 'eavy metal style)...
i'm of the opinion that that paintjobs cam remain relatively simple, if schemes are well chosen, paint is applied neatly, and all the details are brought to life...

that's the result here...
no over-the-top weatherin'...
no excessive freehand...
no extreme highlights...
just a solid paint scheme, applied perfectly...

the new style of chaos star really sets it all off...
i like it...

can't wait to see 'em done...

@ Disjointed Entity - I've been thinking about working on a guide. I might just do that once I've finished the Blood Pact project.

@ Death by Monkeys - the symbols are freehand and the head, as Platuanth4th said, is from the Baneblade sprue. A while back a bunch of friends around the country sent me their standing BB commander bodies and the heads they weren't using.

@ Cadaver - I'm thinking about a battlewagon conversion, but I'm not sure what weapon I'd put in the truck bed. Some sort of artillery piece or AA gun, I think.

@ sA - the orky gun cupola stands pretty tall and I think that's part of the visual issue you're picking up on. I'm waiting to hear what the Chimeras will actually be able to be armed with, but I'm keen to do some up with snub-nose autocannon mounts.

@jah - thanks mate. It can be very easy to go overboard. Also it takes less time with a less is more approach ; )

@ Platuanth4th - I'm really looking forward to seeing that BW conversion finished. I love the idea of turning it into a mobile command center.

Yep, things have been a bit light on the Blood Pact lately. A combination of baby prep (there's a lot of stuff you need apparently), tax time, friends from out of town, other hobby projects (posted on my blog), and a steady increase in new tasks for my new job have meant reduced time on the Blood Pact.

As Chrispy says though, I've been painting on my Stalk Tank and hope to get more done over the weekend for an early next week update. I'm thinking about running a contest to create a couple of datasheets for the Stalk Tanks. Should be fun.

Looking forward to seeing what you do for the vehicles, particularly the SteG4 as I haven't seen any good conversions for this done.

Thats a great tutorial for making rivets and bravo for covering a range of methods. I find another (more time consuming) method for really small rivets is to use green stuff, a technical pencil (the ones with the thin rods of graphite) and a little vaseline. Put a small blob of GS where you want the rivet, put some vaseline on the tip of the technical pencil and then stamp the GS with it. Once its stamped and sorted simply trim the excess with a sharp scalpel.

Have had some thought for the Purge project, will email my character preferences just now. I think a few overlap but we can discuss which we will each do.

I've got 3 kids. Girls on the outside and a son in the middle.

My son only ever took a real interest in Pokemon & Dragnball Z CCG's, with MTG coming in as he got older (which he's long since dropped). My girls are the gaers, with my oldest only begin really interested in RPG's, and my youngest interested in all "gaming" and miniatures.

I love the incorporation of the base into the structure of the tank... you did a great job of supporting the chassis without looking like you're doing so. Subtle. Nice stuff.

And the color choices work out pretty darn well to. Subdued tones, like the rest of your Blood Pact, but with enough accent color to keep the eye moving.

Are you planning to add any more weathering/battle damage to future stalk-tanks? The chipped paint effect you're using is very effective, and the dirt and staining along the legs works to bring the overall tone together, but it might be interesting to see how these beasts take punishment... just a thought...

Thanks for all the positive comments, a lot of hours went into bringing that model to life. And thanks for all the well wishes for my daughter, I'm sure many more hours will be spent joyfully with her.

As for the rules or what it could count as there are really a number of options. As some have suggested it could be an armored/heavy sentinel, but it really is too big for that (in my view). It could also be a Lena Russ exterminator without sponsons, it certainly is that big, but I'm not sure it should have an AV of 14 - it seems too spindly to me. I'd also like it to have some reasonable close combat impact but it doesn't have a battle cannon like the Defiler. At the moment it seems more like an oversized Chaos Dreadnought, but even that doesn't do it justice. I'm thinking of running a competition to create a Datasheet for Apoc and then a second for a group of three (including a psyker upgrade). More news on that as it comes to hand ; )

As for the army, it'll definitely use the new IG codex, but until I get my own copy in my hands I'm reluctant to speculate too much. I do know that even with the huge amounts of additional units (awesome!) there'll be a few things I need to relegate to Apocalypse situations, which is just fine for me.

I'll try to get a group shot of the project thus far sometime over the weekend once we're home and slightly settled. And thanks once again for your well wishes.

It certainly is an expensive beast, but I'll make sure that all the other bitz from the Chimera and Leman Russ will be used when building the other vehicles (AT-70 or AT-83 and Usurper) yet to come. The descriptions do talk about a hard-wired servitor floating in a fluid-filled, underslung bubble and yes, mine does not include that guy ; ) Instead I chose to armor up his bubble so that I could concentrate on the rest of the "mechanics" of the piece. Now that I know how to build them I can start to incorporate the fiendish "bubbles". The guns, I think, are a different story.

For the rest of the look I took a lead from the Sabbat World Crusades artbook from Black Library. There's a really cool concept sketch to the rear of that book and I tried to remain faithful to that image.

The best books for the Pact are Guns of Tanith, Straight Silver, and Sabbat Martyr. First and Only would be good for Nurglesque guys too.

I like the simplicity of the picture frame sprayed black. Puts the focus on the models rather than trying to make them "all fancy" or compensate for a flaw in the painting. Having said that I do still like well done dioramic bases for squad displays

I'm off to the club tonight and I'll do some painting on these freaks. I think you should go for a simple line banding around the hem and sleeves of the robes, it certainly needs something to break up the large areas and add some more detail to the robes.

@ Sirath - I was originally thinking about starting with Dark Angels green and highlighting up with Snot Green and Sunburst Yellow to get something more "vibrant" as you correctly quote, but I decided on Orkhide shade and Gretchin Green as a bit of a change, kind of pushing my own personal boundaries. Not too successful on a vibrancy front but I still like the little buggers. ; )

Thanks for all the kind words. Chicago Games Day was great, lots of fun talking about some very nice toy soldiers.

@Dante - I walked away with two Silver Demons, one for my Cherubael in Large Model, and one for "The Withdrawal of the 144th" in the Diorama category. I've put up a few pics on my blog, I hope you like them.

Now that the Demons are over I can get back to my Blood Pact project, as well as a few others. I'm working on a new Penal Legion Squad, a couple of Usurpers (the Blood Pact version of the Medusa), and some more Pacters, all for a tournament in October. Pictures to follow soon.

Thanks for the kind words. Those Blight Drone models are indeed awesome.

@ studderingdave - the slime/poop out the back of the Drone is greenstuff, built up over paperclip armatures. The stream of poop is greenstuff over a brass rod that goes up into the Drone and bends underneath the base. Then the whole thing was painted with a mix of browns and greens and given a layer of 'Ardcoat to finish it off.

How quick are you turning these guys out now?

I like the yellow cannisters as a continuous theme, it adds a bit of interest and a nice shot of colour. I'd like to see the yellow be a little paler and more rusted up, but otherwise, great stuff.

Can we trouble you for an army shot at some point?

I don't have corel myself, so I can't check it. Also, since I was printing on 6" by 12" sheets of plasticard, some of the bits from the first page are on the second page so that they would fit. Also, be careful to line it up properly, and the small vision slits are prone to warp as they are such small pieces, but they can be put back into shape using a bit of hot water.

@Empchild - the armor on my regular troopers is drybrushed with Tin Bitz, followed by a drybrush of Boltgun Metal, then a patchy wash of Thraka Green, a patchy wash of Leviathan Purple, followed by a wash of Devlan Mud, then Badab Black. All of that is finished off with an edging of Mithril Silver. Hope that helps.
