Hey Craig, I'm with ya on the completist - right down to the Pirates. D'oh! This year though, I've put my foot down - no new models until I've actually completed all the projects in my backlog. That's right! No new IG sweetness until I've painted all my current guys, no new Lizardmen until I've dug out those 1/48th scale WWII models and made a diorama, nothing.

So how about it? Care to make a similar commitment? I mean, after all, it was in your segment...

Great show again, guys. I actually enjoy the fact that the podcast has become rather long. It's still full of content, and it really makes work go faster. Thanks.

It was a way of making products for GW without having to get GW's approval. Personally I don't see it as a problem as people make terrain for GW games, bases for GW models, and other helpful products. They aren't infringing on GW's IP since AFAIK GW can't copyright "Stunned" or "Immobilised".

Ozymandias, King of Kings

Re:The D6 Generation Ep 24: Gale Force 9 Interview & Hollywood's Historical Primer

Just finished listening. I liked the episode a lot.

There are times quite frequently that I am listening to the D6 gen and I find myself bored to death by a few long drawn out discussions on certain minutae of X subject. But I chalk that off to the lack of visual references that would keep me otherwise engaged.

I found myself able to the entire episode and remain interested throughout the enite podcast.

I particularly enjoy the recent move to interview people "in the biz" of the gaming world. I could care less if they sponsor the show or not, but I really like listening about such things because most of the time companies usually A) aren't offered a way to communicate this way with the public or B) have no desire to communicate this way with the public instead opting to let their products do the talking for them. Hopefully you can contact more people and do a segment each episode like this. It helps promote their products, and it gives you interesting subject matter for the listeners.

What happened to the hollywood minute music? I didn't even know it had started without that audio cue... I thought Raef was channeling andy rooney just for the hell of it.

The hollywood minute was excellent. Collectible "blind buy" games are the devil and I myself stopped buying 'blind buys' after Pirates. I will say that the singles market is a godsend, as a way of snubbing your nose at the makers of those games.

Without the singles market, I would never have enough eastern block tanks for my Kursk scenario in the axis and allies miniatures game (which consequently are the perfect scale for Flames of war).

Take heart about your pirates stuff, Raef. With the new Trafalgar game from warhammer ancients, I am sure you will find a secondary use for those models quite soon.

Still listening to the episode, and I blame you for making me to sign up to this forum which I just did. I'm very interested by this Plastec or Plastech or Plasteck site where Craig got the bases for the Uncharted Seas frigates. I just finished my human fleet and I also noticed the frigates are top-heavy, and it sounds like a great solution. As I didn't see a link on the D6G website I thought I should ask for it somehow. I do not discount the possibility that I'm blind of course. Great podcast as usual guys, you're also the reason I ended up registered on iTunes so I could leave a review there. Thanks!

Re: Historical Gaming.

Loved the episode...

For the Ancient and Medieval era you could look into Field of Glory from Osprey Publishing. The full coloured rulebook is well organized and detailed with lots of diagrams to explain key concepts. It is a sufficient system for the historical set, but has the ability to create point based armies for the hobby gamer set. It can be played in 15mm or 25/28mm scale. It would be a good "gateway" to historical gaming.

I picked up the rules and a couple suplements at my local book store but it is also available from Amazon.com.

Basically I have a few handfuls of Germans and Russians, and I would like to find something that could be used to play a short battle in a village or some such, perhaps with a piece of supporting armor per side. Not looking for historical recreation here, just something that makes sense for the period/weapons and would be fun.

how can you be interested in Uncharted oceans and small-squad civil war era miniature battles and miss out on ACW riverine and naval combat? ground battles may have taken place between armies, but on the water it was blockade runs, hastily converted gunboat barges, and highly non-standardized just-begging-to-be-modeled craft.
Re:The D6 Generation Ep 24: Gale Force 9 Interview & Hollywood's Historical Primer

Nice. An episode that did not make me want to rush out and buy a shiny new game. My bank account thanks you.

The Plastruct idea for ship bases is perfect. I was trying to decide how to base the human frigates (and I suspect the small Dragon Lords ships might need them as well) and this looks like a good solution. I've already stolen Craig's table idea so why not the bases as well.

I liked the historical gaming segment. I have been interested in it for a long time but a primary limiting factor is finding opponents. From what I have learned, this is probably the most important step since it will drive what periods, scale and rules to select (unless you buy multiple armies for others to play against you). The fragmentation seems to be a major limiting factor for people interested in historical gaming -- at least in the U.S.
Russell's badly Judged Torchwood comments will be fully addressed in the Next "Words from Wales". I for one can't wait.........
Perhaps in addition to explaining the apparent lack of morality in Wales you can also explain why there are so many aliens in Cardiff

The D6 Generation Ep 24: Gale Force 9 Interview & Hollywood's Historical Primer
Guys, also really happy you have found the great game that Epic Armageddon is. One small word of warning is that the 2008 Handbook includes changes that were not accepted during Games Workshop final review of the rules.
Well, as I understand it (and correct me if I'm wrong) these were initially approved by Jervis and then the whole "we won't accept FAQs until there's a reprint" issue happened and after a very long period of silence, the approval was retracted. So technically you may be correct, morally I think the ERA version stands as it only did not become 100% "official" because there has not been a reprinted rulebook - in contrast with what happened with BFG.
Not all Epic gamers are using that rule book or set of army lists.
As its a "dead game" as far as GW are concerned players have been left to fend for themselves, so this is true. I'm not at all interested in tournaments, so I haven't a clue what has become generally accepted on the tournament scene.
Head over to Tactical wargames forum for more info.

The UK has a growing tournament circuit, more details can be found at http://www.epic-uk.co.uk
Absolutely true. Endorsed 100%.

In my view the ERA "cleaned up" version of the rules is 1,000% better than the original in terms of legibility and clarity. Playability, balance and the rest seems fine enough to me, but that is a much more subjective call. All I know is that after 3 reads-through of the original rule book and 3 test games, I couldn't make head nor tail of the game. After a single go with the 2008 version, I was sorted and have had no more clarity issues. The original book is a complete mess as far as I am concerned when it comes to actually trying to work out how to play the game. Although it is very pretty!

In other news...

My wallet hates you guys. Again!

I've just ordered 3 sheets of that blue Plastruct sheeting. In the UK its available from http://www.ema-models.co.uk/ Its not in their retail catalogue though so you have to ring up and order over the phone. Minimum order quantity is £12 of goods, which means you have to order 3 sheets. With VAT and delivery, that comes to around £17. Any UK resident wanting to order can email them at sales@ema-models.com

If Craig could ever post any images of his finished bases I'd be very interested to see how his "bow waves" etc., turned out! I'm a bit intimidated about the idea of making them out of greenstuff!

Heya Guys:

Thanks for all the posts on the Historical Primer segment. I had no idea it would be received so well. I am still learning as I go and I will keep you all up to date. Right now, I am deciding on basing four 28 mm on one base as suggested in the rule book, or basing each figure on one "warhammer" base. I am probably leaning on the latter so I could always use the "Warhammer" ACW rules when they come out.

Chat again in about a year.

Hollywood.

This is the first show I've listened to in a while. Not because I don't like the show, but the show has become entirely too long IMHO. These things are fine, and you've picked up a lot of sponsors which is great, but maybe it's time to move some of these things exclusively to the website. Don't get me wrong, I love the show.
