On a different note, I just joined another Tale of Many Gamers , Paint and Play, and have decided to extend my Chaos Space Marines Black Legion with some Khornate allies. As part of the paint and play that starts today, I need to post up the prepainted first 500 points.

I have 3 boxes worth of AoBR Space Marines sitting around and I decided that I would try to speed paint those models. Just to be clear though, I have no intention of speed painting any of my Chaos Space Marines They are my primary army and the army I want to use to get better at painting. However, I have so many unpainted models from other armies, I figured I would try to speed painting on those. As such, I primed the entire 3 boxes worth of AoBR Space Marines with the Navy Blue, and in my opinion they came out great! So much so that I would recommend using their Navy Blue as a primer for Blue Armies, though the color is not quite Mordian and not quite Ultramarines, so one might have some difficulty color matching.

For the Pure Red, I am sort of happy with it, though through no fault of the paint I think I just made a major blunder priming my Berzerkers... I thought I was being frugal and tried to get as much paint out of the can as possible and ended up "dusting" the Berzerkers, meaning the coat ended up rough. Completely my fault and something I should have known better, since I did it before with my very first models I ever primed. I think I can recover from it though. Pure red is very close to Blood Red so I don't think one would have as much problems matching. It does also go on a little thicker and without care you could cover some detail easier than I would say one would with GW or Armory Black primers. That said it worked out fine for the Rhinos.

As for using it again, definitely the Navy Blue. Any Ultramarines I do will be based with their Navy Blue. I have painted one Tac Squad of Space Marines all the way up to tabletop and they look good with minimal work. I just applied the Dark Quickshade and I am waiting for it to dry, so I will have additional comments on that once its done. I did one test model earlier this week and it looks like a good tabletop worthy model, so so far I approve. Again, only for those that don't want to improve their painting skills.

As for the Pure Red, I need to wait and see. I did one test model and I am liking it. Again, I am not using the Quickshade on any of my CSM. I am going to reserve judgment until after I complete one of the Rhinos and the Berzerkers. The fact that I advanced and continued using after the test model is a sign that I am going to be happy with it, but I want to get the whole squad done before giving a full assessment.

Quick note on flocking the game board, in order to speed up the flocking process, I experimented with 3M Super77 Spray Adhesive. The process went way faster that it would have if I painted on white glue. However, it my testing I did find that the Spray Adhesive does NOT dry clear, almost clear but still a little milky. I only recommend its usage where the flocking (sand, flock, grass) will completely cover the area. It worked great for me with that caveat. I will be using a kit-bashed Chaos Lord to count as Kharn, since a) I already have a painted Kharn and for this paint and play I cannot use any previously painted models, and b) for fluff reasons I want someone other than Kharn leading the warband. I would have really liked to get Daemonic Possession on the Land Raider, but I ran out of points. However, if I was to change two of the power fists in the the list to power sword, or maybe just a close combat weapon and melta-bombs, that would give me enough points for Daemonic Possession. I have a general fear of walkers in close combat so I am tentative to do so... Any thoughts?

"g3spoon" probably played a little too aggressive against my list, since that's exactly what I want people to do against this Khorne list. Again, "gspoon" was in good spirits and really fun to play. I hope to play against him again in the future.

Also, of special note about "g3spoons" list is that he actually made custom shoulder pads for his Marines. He sculpted one and made a cast, which he then used to make more... hence the white shoulder the pads you see in the pics. I hope someday he will join DakkaDakka and maybe even put up a tutorial on how he did it. I know there are other showing how, but sometimes with other tutorials you see some variety in how people do the same thing, and then take best of breed after reading both, or all.

For Berzerkers

a) cut off all, as Shep says, "bread bolters" and replace with the newer chaos bolt pistols.

b) try a really dark gray on the Berzerker gloves.

c) either scrap or try repriming some of the berzekers that are currently in a bad prime state due to dusting. FYI, Simple Green does not strip off the "Army Painter" primer, all of the other paint was removed, but hte important part of the botched prime job stayed :(

d) paint 16 of them and finish 2 rhinos within the next 5 weeks.

Chosen:

a) Refile hoods to get rid of mold lines

b) file down some of the angel daggers, though I need to keep some to keep in my "fluff," as these are actually "stolen" robes symbolizing a botched infiltration job

c) paint the green panels on the front of the Rhino to have green scales.

Black Legion:

To be fair about the price, what happened is that I had a blood slaughter built, but the legs are extremely fragile and kept breaking off. I got tired of gluing it back together, so while I was building the second grinder, I saw the slaughterer and started playing around with the idea of replacing the legs. Well, when all said and done, the scale was a bit off with just hte legs so I kept the conversion going and ended up with what you see. I really like it, but yeah, the total cost is a bit too much and I had several second thoughts and I started hacking and breaking away both models... For those curious about the playability of the list, its what I would call Tier 2.5 It can absolutely crush some lists, and fall on its face on others. I found that the dependency for success is on when and what reserve arrive, with one of the largest dependencies being on when and where the Greater Daemon arrives. Too early or out of position and it's a sitting duck. Too late and well.. it's too late. Furthermore, the actual round you want them to come in varies depending on deployment and army you are facing. In summary, this list puts a large part of the success of the army in the hands of the dice, and it makes it just to volatile.

However, conceptually I really like it and I actually anticipated this during list construction. I have been working on more Black Legion troops, but not aggressively. As for the Khorne stuff, I would like to finish it, but I am not actively working on it.

2. If you are going to put your pictures in the Gallery, please make sure they are in focus -- the Macro function is good for that -- and the right way up.
