A Dakka Challenge - 'Get Your Teach On!'

This Dakka Challenge is a bit different than ones we've run before. Instead of challenging you all to convert or paint a specific model based on a theme, we're looking to promote this relatively new Dakka forum: The [b]Painting and Modeling Tutorials[/b] forum.

[u][size=18][b]THE GOAL:[/b][/size][/u]
We want you to create and post the very best modeling, painting or hobby tutorial you can come up with anytime during the month of May into the Dakka Painting and Modeling Tutorials forum (this one). That way, not only does everyone gain new and interesting hobby insights and techniques from each other, but we also help to get even more people interested in posting and reading this (relatively) new Dakka forum. And of course there's a pretty sizeable prize up for grabs as well!

In other words, [b]get your teach on and win a prize for doing it![/b]

[u][size=18][b]THE RULES:[/b][/size][/u]
[list]1) Your Tutorial thread must be posted in the Dakka Painting and Modeling Tutorials forum (this one) during the month of May.[/list]
[list]2) All of the tutorial content (text, images, videos, etc) must have been created by you and may not have already been displayed as a tutorial elsewhere on Dakka or any other website. Tutorials found to have been posted elsewhere or that contain someone else's work will be disqualified.[/list]
[list]3) The tutorial must actually be a [i]tutorial[/i] about something pertaining to the wargaming hobby. It must include pictures and text explaining the different steps, and it must have different steps; just posting a beginning and ending picture of a model won't cut it![/list]
[list]4) All photos used for the tutorial [b]MUST[/b] be hosted by Dakka (we don't want 'em disappearing a few months down the road). This can be most easily accomplished by uploading your photos to the [url=http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery-upload.jsp]Dakka Gallery[/url]. If you need any assistance uploading your pictures to Dakka (or how to link to your photos once you've uploaded them), feel free to post your questions in the [url=http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/forums/show/55.page]Nuts & Bolts forum[/url].[/list]
[list]5) The day (or so) after the deadline, a thread will be created listing all of the qualifying tutorial threads along with a public poll for the community at large to pick their favorite tutorial from the bunch.[/list]
[list]6) Public voting will last for 4 Days. At the end of which, the top five tutorials with the most votes in the poll are the finalists.[/list]
[list]7) From the five finalists, a winner will be selected by a panel of judges. Judges will be selected by the site's administrator (me).[/list]
[list]8) Any (and all!) tutorials posted in May will be eligible, so feel free to post as many tutorials as you want. However, in order to ensure that all five finalist positions don't get filled by a single talented individual, only one tutorial per user will be admitted into the 'final five' for consideration by the judges. If you enter multiple tutorials that all get enough public votes to be in the top 5, only your top vote-getting tutorial will be included in the finals.[/list]
[list]9) Admin and Mod participants can't become finalists or win the prize, but don't let that keep you from voting for them! Defeating one another is more than enough of a reward for us... [/list]

I have never done a tutorial before but I am really going to try for this contest. I am also making a request for a tutorial. Since it seems to me that many Eldar builds are including seer councils on jetbikes I would like to see a detailed tutorial on creating a seer council on jetbikes. I know it has been done but a tutorial on this subject for this contest is sure to be very detailed and well done. I could really use one like that!

The contest applies to any (and all) tutorials posted in the month of May so if you post multiple entries they'll all be voted upon.

However, as we don't really want the five finalist positions to be completely dominated by one (very talented) person I guess I'll go ahead and say that only your top public vote getting tutorial will be eligible for the final five places to be voted on by the judges (I'll add this to the rules).

So yes, you can have multiple entries but of those only your top public vote getter will be eligible for the final 5.

No problem!As a painter I believe knowledge is power. I'm always in search of tutorials on pretty much anything so when something comes up, from basing to stripping models I'll know what works best. I want dakka to be a 'one stop shop' so to speak. Personally I have 40+ bookmarks to different tutorials, on different sites and forums and it's would be nice to reduce that number.

I think this is a great time for seasoned painters to showcase beginner friendly advance techniques. TELL US YOUR SECRETS! lol

Lol I have that bookmarked lol. I actually got paynes grey after reading that to try and replace badab black but paynes has a blue hue to it so it's not really as versatile as badab black. But yeah, stuff like that is cool to read up on and try after seeing results online and deciding weather it fits their task.

With a contest like this one, it really benefits the organizer (yakface) to just leave the contest as is! It could end up being way more work on Yaks end otherwise.

This set up will work out just fine I believe. And could definitely open the doors a bit for more diverse contests because of it!

All our other challenges have been anonymous but as has been said, that really isn't a workable scenario for this particular contest. Not only would it be way, way, way too much work for me to handle, it would also be impossible to change the tutorials 'over' to the users who created them. Which means those tutorials would always be counted as my posts. Even if I put the 'credit' for who made them in those posts, its never the same (as you can't search for them by user later, etc).

Besides, the goal is mostly get more people interested in this forum and helping each other out with tutorials, so winning the prize is ultimately just a nice bonus for someone!

It's the best "tutorial", so it doesn't even necessarily need to feature a painted model, it could just be about modeling.

To win it likely needs to be about an interesting topic, needs to feature well shot photography, needs to clearly define the steps and just generally be informative and useful.

This contest is certainly generating some good stuff. Although, with that prize it's not surprizing. I like the difference between the two different organizations I know of which hold modeling and painting competitions. One, a huge international corporation, holds a competition, and the prize is a little statue thingy. The other, a small internet forum, holds a competition offering $200 bucks to the winner.

It will start soon. There are a whole LOT of posts to get organized into a voting thread so its going to take a little time.

I will probably post a list of all the threads I believe to be eligible into this thread and give people a day or two to let me know whether I've missed their thread or to let me know their thread shouldn't be eligible for one reason or another.

I really don't want to post the voting thread and miss someone and have them complain later because once the voting starts its pretty much a killer to be added later.

So you should expect the voting to start sometime in the middle of this week. Keep an eye on this forum for a new sticky and a front page announcement as well.

Just to keep things nice and clear for the rules I'd prefer that you wait to post it elsewhere until after the contest is complete (the winner has been picked).
