The D6 Generation Ep 34: Race for the Galaxy Review & Atlas Games Interview

Race for the Galaxy is reviewed in detail in Episode 34 and The Wives interview Atlas Games Tenured Editor Michelle Nephew to get the scoop on the company and more on how women are involved in game design and development.

And, back by popular demand, Peter Lipton returns with Inside the Podcaster's studio. We're not really sure what else to say about this segment except... exquisite.

All that and our usual 'not too horrible' humor, with features such as:

- Rapid Fire
- The Hollywood Minute
- Achievements in Gaming
- & More

Link to Episode: http://thed6generation.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=495714

We'd love to hear your feedback!

Link to Thread about prior episode: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/243575.page

I'm echoing the chorus of praise for World War Z. Straight after the last show I reserved it from my local lending library, and found it a compulsive page-turner.

Having had my faith in Craig's rating of this book justified, I have since placed a reservation for a couple of the Dresden Files books, which I am now eagerly awaiting! Aren't libraries wonderful! Now, if only they'd do the same thing for boardgames!

I knew that green worlds as farming sounded wrong to me, but I couldn't remember what they were. That should make Craig like the game even more, as there is NO farming in the game.

Although being able to discard a moister farmer farm-boy card and destroy a major space station would be cool, it sounds a lot like a space Munchkin card. ;-)

The D6 Generation Ep 34: Race for the Galaxy Review & Atlas Games Interview
How does this game compare to San Juan, by the way? The two seem very similar.
Tom Lehman designed a predecessor to Race for the Galaxy a few years back. Before it was published, though, he collaborated with Andreas Seyfarth on the design of San Juan based on those ideas. Eventually Race came out, as an evolution of that design. You'll find the gameplay similar between the two, though Race plays a little faster and has a more geeky theme, particularly if you're a Space Opera nerd.

Tom talks about it on Boardgamegeek from time to time.

Starlit Citadel's got the story as part of its review of Race: http://www.starlitcitadel.com/games/race-for-the-galaxy.html

If you've got your hands on San Juan already, and space isn't your thing, then you could certainly derive similar benefit from just playing San Juan. But Race is really inviting, and the unified mechanics of "cards = goods AND settlement resources" really ties things together nicely. Also the non-exclusive role selection is, I believe, different from San Juan, as is the de-emphasis on sheer production of goods.

It just feels a bit more sleek, streamlined and sweeping.

The D6 Generation Ep 34: Race for the Galaxy Review & Atlas Games Interview

Space Hulk and Space Crusade provided me with my first models! We loved it, and played both for hours on end, right through college and after!

I always loved the mechanic of the radar contacts that could be anything. An elegant solution to the deployment issues of many board games.

I'm not sure how firm the rumors are or not, but they pretty much single-handedly ended Grind House Games release of Incursion as a complete, stand alone game for purchase if the rumors there are true.

Personally, I've been keeping my fingers crossed for months that the Space Hulk rumors are true.

In fact, until Russ said there was nothing firm above, I had assumed that it was much more firm than that. But he's the news guy, so I'd go with what he's heard.

Still, got my fingers crossed, though!
