3 Months... 30 years... (3 month summary p 5) The log continues!

In November, in slightly over 3 months, I will turn 30. It's sad how I always thought that these number milestones had no real meaning, yet as my 30th birthday approaches I can't help but reflect on where I am and what I've accomplished, vs. the dreams I once had.

In ANY CASE, this miniature mid-life crisis (ha ha, miniature, get it?) is at least good for me clearing out my project back log.

So I am throwing down the gauntlet to myself to finish and post my projects, and to try and polish everything off by my birthday at the end of November.

So here goes!

First, a catalog. Red Projects are not started, Orange Projects are In-Progress, and Green Projects are finished.
(Thanks to Panic for suggesting the new project-tracking format.)

Imperial Guard: Dnothian Scavenger Legions - DONE!
-5 Steel Legion Infantry Squads - woohoo! 55 men painted! Yeah!
-Steel Legion Heavy Weapon Squad
-Platoon Command
-10 Valhallan Veterans (melta)
-10 Valhallan Veterans (flamer)
-10 Carapace Veterans
-10 Carapace Veterans
-Valhallan Flamer Command Squad
-5 Ratlings -- moving these guys to the bits bin. Decided they don't fit with the rest of this army.
5 Valhallan "Counts as" snipers
-Company Command Squad
-Master of Ordinance
-Company Command Squad
-Master of the Fleet
-Primaris Psyker
-Sly Marbo
-Chimera "Snow Cat" Pattern Transport
-Demolisher
-Demolisher
-Basilisk
-Las Cannon Sentinel

Red Planet Inquistorial Force (Random Force for painting, will probably only be used in Apoc games)
-2 Infantry Squads with Flamers
-3 Infantry Squads with Heavy Bolters (to be converted from Gorgon Crew)
-Platoon Command
-2 x Mortar Squads
-1 x Commisar

-Inquisitor & Retinue
-Commisar Lord
-Bane Blade*
-Cannonness
Dominion Squad
-Inquisitor Lord in Terminator Armor
-Culexus Assassin
-Battle Sisters Squad
-Callidus Assassin
-Callidus Assasin
-Seraphim
-Penal Legion Squad
-Death Strike Missile - (This one is going back to the bits box. I took it out and realized it wasn't really done, just a quick kit bash I had done for an Apox battle.)

Tau -Unnamed Cadre
(The remnants of a Tau Army I once had that I couldn't part with, too much work into these ones!)
-Pathfinders x 4
-Devil Fish
-Firewarriors w/ Carbines & Grenades x 6
-Kroot x 10
-Pathfinders x 4
-Firewarrior Shas' UI (Needs a unit to lead!)
-Kroot x 10
-Ethereal
-Piranha
-Shas 'O commander in custom Suit
-Crisis Monat
-Crisis Monat
-Custom Kroot Hounds x 5
-Sniper Drone "counts as" Squad
-3 Air Caste Crew (Objective Markers)

Mammoth Slayers Warriors of Khorne - Fantasy Warriors of Chaos
Lord of Khorne on Juggernaut
5 Knights of Chaos
5 Knights of Chaos
5 Marauder Horsemen
5 Marauder Horsemen (primered)
10 Chaos Warhounds
12 Chaos Warriors of Khorne

Lizardmen Horde
My first Warhammer Army! I once sold them, then bough them back. Mostly they need cleaning up, basing, and a few new units painted.
Slaan (old style)
Slaan (new)
Temple Guard x 11
Skink Mage
Skink Hero on Stegadon
15 Saurus with Spears
15 Saurus with Hand Weapon
12 Saurus with Spears
70! Skinks in various units
3 Salamanders
Stegadon (Old style, was painted, but needs updating for this edition)
4 x Kroxigor (need touchups)
3 x Terradons
5 x "Count as" Cold One Cavalry (Skinks on New Cold Ones)

Roleplaying & Random Minis: (Some of these I've given away, and I found some new ones and posted them - funny how actually painting makes me reevaulate which minis I really neeed)
Katinka Wolfspear (my D&D Character)
Benvolo (Companion)
Lugos (Cohort)
Lyra (My wife's character)
Jom Rotgrom (Her other character)

Vampire Count
10 x Skeletons
LOTR Bog Wraiths x 3
-LOTR Barrow Wights X 2
-Wood Elf Lord
Wood Elf with Bow

Celtos Axe Maiden
-Dark Sword female with spear and hawk
-Dark Sword female in Chainmail with sword

1 Bloodletter
1 Daemonette
Bard of Alahan
Celtos Druidess
LOTR Farmer Maggot & Dogs
-Confrontation Falconers
-Reaper Vampiress
- Gave these away

... and there might be more I'm forgetting, but I think that's most of it!

Now as soon as my new brushes arrive, I can start making progress. (I somehow manage to lose the tin with ALL my paintbrushes in it. :( )

Existential crisis = more painted minis.

*edit* Moved some of the inquisitorial stuff to the Red Planet force, as it no longer fits in my army after the 4e codex. Also removed any products that involve buying new models.

Re:3 Months... 30 years... A project Log of Unfinished Business

Thanks for all the well wishes, guys! I know it's a lot to bite off, but dreaming big will motivate me. A lot of the stuff is very close to done, for instance, the 50 Steel Legion troopers in the Scavenger Legion - 40 are painted and just need squad marks on the bases. I may not get it all done, but dammit, I 'm going for it!

Ok, so last night I got the first layer of drybrushing done on the Bane Blade, (which I call "The Rightous Indignation") and this morning I primered the Chimera and cleaned the flash from, based, and primered the 8 steel legion lasgunners I have yet to paint. All in all, a good start!

The Baneblade WIP:

The Snow Cat

The Demolishers, 07 - Anvil, and 06 Lil Betty

And Top View, where you can see that the Dnothian Scavenger Legions are *gasp* Traitors to the Empire!

FOR THE GREATER GOOD!

All in all, a productive day.
@ Panic - Thanks again, I'm gonna try and get as much green as possible up there! This is much more readable.

@ His Master's Voice - The turrets are from 1/48 Russian tank kits (T-72s, I think from Academy, so not too expensive) modified with bits from the Vindicator, Tau Rail-Gun, and with a turret hatch created from a gun drone. I'm glad you like them, they were ridiculously expensive to kitbash!

@person person - Thanks!

They're the best armies fo sho
Pics ye ask for, and pics ye shall receive. I'm actually quite pleased with the how the Chaos are coming (though I am getting tired of painting red - almost as much as I'm tired of painting white!), however they are currently staying at my friend's house so I don't have to lug them back and forth on the bus to battle him.

The Lizardmen are around though, so here's a couple. The Lizzies are unfortunately the lowest priority, as there are just SO MANY of them, and the army contains some of my first paint jobs from night on 12 years ago. With that in mind, I am just trying to unify the army through some reapainting, thematic basing, and good, clean table top paint jobs. Nothing fancy for the Lizzies!

These guys need a little more conversion work before they are ready to paint:

Good Gravy, but I love those new cold ones!

Ok, on to the progress. Last night and this morning I managed to get some work done on the Snow Cat. The first step for the way I paint the winter tanks is several dirt and grim washes, followed by massive amounts of drybrushing and then more weathering and battle damage.

The ugly beginnings:

Finally, something really exciting: I finished converting the last 2 members of my 50 man steel legion platoon. I cut off the arms of the 'point and shoot' officer, of which I had somehow ended up with 3, and turned him into a sergeant, and cut the weapons and ammo off a grenade launcher guy to make one more trooper:

And that's all I got done last night/this morning. These guys included, I have only 10 models to paint to finish off the 50 man platoon.

Thanks for the wishes and comments. Laterz.

3 Months... 30 years... A project Log of Unfinished Business

Not too much to report from this weekend, as I went to visit friends in Seattle and actually play with my minis rather than just paint them! It's a very difficult balance for me, as I like to play, but I LOVE to paint and model.

At least I got some work done with my portable painting kit, and started the LOTR bog wraiths and the second barrow wight. Those are easy to do on the move, as it's mostly drybrushing and washing.

Tomorrow I'll try and get some more paint and pictures done, but for the moment, that is all.

*edit*

Look what just came in the mail!

Man, these guys look great. Some will be easier to cut apart, some more difficult, but with some Green Stuff and a good saw, I am looking forward to having a full platoon and enough to convert some other stuff.

Unfortunately, they weren't all that well packed, so I have at least 7 weapon breaks already. :( Ah well, that's what glue is for.

I'm really very excited about these guys, but won't be able to even touch them this week, as I need to get a Star Wars RPG off the ground. Ah well.

Re:3 Months... 30 years... A project Log of Unfinished Business

Well, I couldn't hold back. I actually got up when my alarm went off at 5:00 AM this morning, so I was able to have a go at cutting apart some of the Gorgon crew.

The crew has several sets of 2 guys, and this guys were a cinch to cut apart. I had to do only minor patching to one arm and shoulder pad with green stuff, and chose to cut off the handle of an entrenching tool which was molded as a huge object for purposes of removing the guy from the mold. Cutting the resin is pretty easy with a new #11 Xacto blade, and a little bit of sytrene rod fixed it right up.

Here is a picture of the two Gorgon Crew I've cut apart next to one of my test models from the regular Krieg squad:

And here's the side view where you can see the new shovel handle and the green work done on the other guy.

All in all, I think it will work very well to make these guys individuals. The blocks of 6 troopers will be a bit harder to work with, but sill manageable I think.

I also managed to finished up one (very small) entry on the lists - the Barrow Wights are done! These guys are great models, but I have to say that my paint jobs are very basic. Mostly washing and drybrushing, not a lot of detail work. But these guys are just for fun, and I was tired of them being bare metal.

Besides, the basic paint job that gets done is better than the amazing paint job that is never completed, says I.

Update of Priorities: Warriors of Chaos

So I haven't gotten much done lately, mostly due to an overload of actual gaming, but I did manage to build and primer a unit of Marauder Horsemen for my WOC army, and also magnetize their bases. Working with the new chaos plastics reminded me of how much I love them, so I have promoted the Warriors of Chaos army to top priority. (It's also the smallest model count, so hopefully I'll have it done quicker!)

Now for the pics. (Nothing too exciting, but posting pics keeps me motivated.)

First off, here are the freshly based Marauder horses:

These models are so, very, very nice. I am willing to forgive GW of so much, based entirely on the strength and value of the new WHFB cavalry boxes. So many bits, great heads for the riders, and the coolest mounts ever. I bought these guys mostly for the horses. If I could have an army of just horses, I would, they are that cool.

The primed riders:

And the champion:

Some minor conversions - gave him a sword, made a new skull mask for the horse from a spare banner top. Nothing too exciting.

The same can be said for my paint jobs on the Chaos stuff - I am going for clean, complete, and fast, rather than super detailed or converted. Partly, this is because I feel the models in the range are so strong that I don't feel the need to do much converting, and partly I just want them done. I've been playing them and having a lot of fun with them, and I'd like to play with a fully painted army.

So here's some of the stuff I've finished:

Khorne Lord on Juggernaut

Here is one of the 10 hounds I have painted. The light was crap this morning, so he doesn't look great, and you can see where the snow basing has gotten in the fur recesses, from improper transport, but I am pretty proud of these guys. I had to sculpt ears on them, since I don't like dogs with antlers (WTF?). The whole squad was painted, based, and finished in an afternoon, thanks to the new washes and some drybrushing.

This is a cool model, because it is the first model a friend of mine painted. Impressive, no? Girls are so much better at painting when they start than guys. (I know MY first model didn't look this good!) I did a little touch up with blood red to highlight the model, but that's it. I was very impressed.

And the rest of the knights. I have the same sentiment about the horses here as with the marauders. I can't believe how cool these models are. The knights are really good, but it's the steeds that blow me away. At the risk of being tarred and feathered, I have to praise GW for the value of this kit: 5 knights with options that are AWESOME models for $25, vs. the old metal knights for $10 a piece?
Well done GW. (Of course, I would like to lecture them on the pricing of all the new IG stuff, but that's another thread.)

Well, that's it. Not much progress, but 5 models based and painted, is 5 models based and painted. Hopefully I'll make some progress on painting the horsemen on Sunday.

Happy weekend, everyone.

Your Snowcat is Amazing. Great job man.
Thanks, guys! Now that my new paintbrushes have arrived, I am going to get back to work on the Snow Cat.

In the meantime, I finished a unit, which is exciting:

They are a little too glossy.... too much varnish, but that should dull down once it's fully dried. They look better since this morning already.

And, very exciting, my jeweler's saw arrived, so I had a go at cutting apart some more of the Gorgon crew. With the 2 I had cut apart earlier, I've now got a full squad with Vox, Sergeant, Flamer, and Mortar cut apart and based. I still need to do some resculpting on arms, but I've cut down and away the filler that was left over from the single casting, and hollowed out behind rifles and gas mask tubes with my dremel.

And this is my favorite guardsmen of the lot. With the skull at his feet and the position of his head, I thought it made for a nice "alas poor Yorick" moment.

And that's all for today. I might get some painting done on the Chimera later tonight, we'll have to see how it goes.

Cheers, all.

Re:3 Months... 30 years... A project Log of Unfinished Business

Yeah, I was pretty pleased with how the first squad came apart. There is a lot of green stuffing left to do on them, but it's mostly just sleeves. I'm looking forward to picking some out to be the platoon command squad, and trying to work in bits from the plastic command box. We'll see how that goes!

Anyhow, over the last couple of days I've gotten a fair amount of work done on the Chimera. It's still got about 25% to go, but is nearing completion.

I somehow have managed to misplace the tank riders I converted for it, but I'm sure they'll turn up somewhere. Here are the in-progress pics without the riders:

Re:3 Months... 30 years... A project Log of Unfinished Business - Snow Cat Finished P. 2

Finished the Chimera today. I discovered I hate painting flags, raised detail or no!

Pretty pleased with how it came out overall. I bought a Tamiya weathering kit which was used for some of the lighter rust effects. The mud is backing soda, glue, and paint mix. I really love painting vehicles, but sadly, this is the last one I have, so until I get the rest of my projects finished, it's mostly infantry now. (Which will be good motivation for me to finish these up, so I can buy me some Valkyries!)

*Photos are taking a long time to upload, they'll be here in a few minutes*
cool stuff , I see you like to mix it up .
Thanks, Slann! It keeps me going if I can work on different armies. For a while I was just working on my Imperial Guard, and let me tell you, I got really, really tired of painting white!

Ok, re-took my Chimera photos, here is the "Snow Cat" Chimera for my Veteran Valhallan squad, "Krack 'n' Burn".

And the next projects on the work bench:

First these guys. These are the rest of my Valhallans, and are my "flex" models. Using them I can expand my valhallan squad that goes with the transport to the full 10 men required by the new Codex, and combine them with my other painted squads to either have 2 special weapon flamer squads or another 10 man veteran squad with 2 flamers and a heavy flamer, as the game demands.

I'm also still working on the Chaos army. Here is the champion of my second Knights of Khorne unit with his first layer of paint:

These guys are great. They hit so hard and are so tough, that my opponent no longer cares about winning the game - it's all about killing these knights!

This weekend was fairly productive - finished the champion in the second unit of Cheese er, Chaos Knights, got the whites layered up on the 11 remaining Valhallans that fill out my Vets and SWS as well as base flesh, and made good progress on the second unit of Marauder Horsemen.
Update of Priorities: Warriors of Chaos
Girls are so much better at painting when they start than guys. (I know MY first model didn't look this good!)
There's a scientific reason for that. It has to do with how males and females develop differently and at different rates in early years(it's the same reason why females tend to have much better hand writing than males do as they generally develop faster than males). I may be able to find the exact science and what not, but that tends to be the reason.

Of course, some people are also just more artistically inclined than others, as well.
WOTR Movement trays are so useful at times.

Everything looks great.
Thanks, Person! Yeah, I actually bought 6 of them to use for my infantry platoons (unless I'm facing a template-heavy army). I am waiting for a can of magnetic paint to arrive to see how well I can magnetize them. They only fit 8, but since my infantry squads have 8 guys plus the heavy weapon team, it's perfect.

I'm also finding it useful to organize minis as I paint them.
Holy crap, man. You are my new muse, you are my inspiration. Vous etes mon raison d'etre. o_o
I blush!

Anyhow, got lots done this morning, finished my valhallan troopers, which actually made me realize that I can rearrange them in a way that I can use everything by putting them in 2 veteran squads and one 4 flamer command squad.

Close up of a Melta Gunner:

Also finished the second squad of Marauder horsemen. I don't have a design for their banner yet - I'll wait to see how they do in battle, then give them fitting iconography. I'm going for quick and clean, and so far, I'm happy with how the army is going.

Champion:

Unit of 5:

So that's several units I get to mark green! Woohoo!

I lined up some of my advisors and a squad of "count as" ratlings to paint next, but I'm feeling the need for a brief break from white.... We'll see what I grab from the shelf next week!

Actually, I did a quick check, and I am really, really close to finishing my first IG and Chaos armies.

I do like the chaos hounds much better with ears.
Epaminondas, I will post more detailed pics of the Krieg guys as I work on them further. I have cut a second squad apart, but have yet to mount them.

Ok, so I was on vacation all last week, and spent a lot of time with family and friends, and almost not time painting. :(

I have managed to get two officers done in the last couple of days:

Valhallan Officer:

A little bummed at how the picture turned out. Direct daylight + white paintjob = difficult to photograph. This is the Chenkov model, and it's actually quite decent with a little bit of work. The original model has an oversized gun and somewhat gorilla-like porportions. Trimming the arms down at the shoulder and replacing the bolt pistol with the hand of the pilot from the Macragge box set did a wonder.

Then there's my Baneblade officer, which I use as "Counts As" fleet officer:

I added the gas mask and filter pack with green stuff, and used guitar wire for the tube in the mask. I like the way this guy turned out.

After taking this picture I worked on the snow a bit more, mashing some pigments into the still-drying paste, so the snow looks less fresh than it does here. I'll show him again when I finish up the company command squad.

It's actually a really cool model in some places; the jacket and face are quite nice. It's just that the model unaltered suffers from 3rd Edition Weapon Syndrome as well as Gorilla Arms and Ham Fists.

Well, blast and damnation, the camera's batteries died today, so no Wippies till tomorrow.

I'm getting very excited to be nearing completion of my first Imperial Guard army. I really love the Valhallan and Steel Legion models, and it was the diorama in the 3rd ed 40k rulebook of Vlahallans in white vs. Tyranids which got me excited about 40k years ago, so this army is the realization of my starting motivations for collecting 40k.

Today I didn't finish anything, but made good progress on several projects, including the 10 skeletons, the Master of Ordnance, Commisar Yarrick, and the heavy weapons team which will complete my company command. (Not an ideal build, but this army is much more about getting my crap painted anyway.)

In other news, I am having to do a little bit of a Jedi Mind Trick on myself to keep from painting my Space Hulk figures. I'm telling myself that they are "Game Pieces" not "Miniatures" so they technically don't fall under the jurisdiction of my personal challenge to paint all my minis by my Birthday.
cool guardsmen
Hopefully they will be long-lived! Ah who am I kidding, they'll all die in their first battle! But thanks.
Wow great looking mini's! Not one of them I don't like!

How did you do the snow on the gaurdsman?
Thanks Hans!

I have used several methods to create the snow effect as I've gone, and learned a bit. The basic components are baking soda (or bicarbonate of soda if you're in the UK) and white glue (I use Elmers.)

Most of the bases are built up using aid-drying clay, which is very cheap, easy to work with, and dries quickly. The downside is that it is fragile. More recently I have built the form of the snow mounds, etc, using ready-mix concrete patch. This stuff is great. It dries quickly, adds a nice weight to the model, has some texture and dries hard as rock. In the picture of the command squad below, the grenade launcher trooper has a base with air-drying clay, wheras the missile team has the concrete patch.

To begin with, I used to paint the base blue, highlight with white, and then apply a thin layer of glue and dust them with the baking soda. This made for a nice, newly-fallen deep snow effect. However, this method invariably has the problem that the soda rubs off with use, which is why it was important to have the base painted beneath it, so that it would look like frozen ice and earth under showing through.

More recently, I have discovered a more durable mix which also eliminates most of the need to paint the base. (I just leave it the base-coat grey.)

The current mix is white glue, rubbing alcohol, and baking soda, mixed into a semi-liquid paste. The alcohol is important to use instead of water, because it evaporates quickly. This is applied with a brush or stick. When dried it is hard and doesn't scrape or rub off. It lacks the granular, newly-fallen look of the dusting method, though. On the plus side, it is very durable and I have found that it can be worked with as it dries for varying effects. On the missile launcher team, you'll see that I've worked with the current alcohol paste and experiment with dusting over the top of that, to try and go for the look of new fallen snow on top of existing slush and grime. I've started using and old brush with some pigment in the bristles to mash the past to make it look muddy and grimy.

Anyhow, that's how I'm approaching it.

Command Squad:

Missile launcher with alcohol paste, pigments, and dusted with soda:

I have thought about magnetizing the dozer blades on the Demolishers and building little piles of enemy-specific corpses and rubble that I could swap out on a game by game basis, but that will have to wait.
WIN. That right there would win you top modeling/paint scores at pretty much any tourney you brought 'em to. Swappable kill models... awesome.
Heh. I think it would make the games really fun. It won't take quite that long, but it'll have to wait for a while. I'd need Eldar, space marines, and chaos to cover my regular oppponents.
Excellent progress. I finally stopped when I realized I was shopping for things I already had and had just forgotten about.

Anyhow, today I did some work on the skeletons while I was waiting for the bases to dry on the command squad:

I do love these guys. The next 2 coming weekends my wife has to work Saturdays, so I'll have some little painting marathons on those days and try to tackle some of the larger projects, like putting the finishing touches on the infantry platoon (4 out of 5 squads are painted, but they all need markings).
The Re-breather light bits gives it a nice contrast.
Yeah, I've found with a really monochrome color scheme, the small contrasting details really help it pop.
Very nice work. First time i've seen the forgeworld guys cut appart for use.
Thanks. I think there is a project thread over at Warseer which is a bit more detailed. That's where I got the idea.
How do you do your snow method?
Check out the post near the top of this page with the missile launcher team pics. I go over my current methods.
pretty awesome stuff there, would like to see more of the steel legion tho.
Thanks Sicarious. The steel legion are my first love, and they are almost done. After I finish the skellies and advisors, I have about 10 lasgun guys and a Sergeant to finish in my 50 man platoon, and putting squad markings on their bases as my next project. The steel legion will get there time in the limelight!

She's from Dark Age minis. I just removed her weapons and did a hand swap on one side to turn her into a "Primaris Psyker" (*cough*Jedi*cough*) for use with my carapace vets. Eventually the goal is to have an army of the Kasrkin models painted white, led by 2 primaris psykers and deploying via Valkries for a "Clone Strike" army. THAT project is a ways away!

These paint jobs are pretty quick, but I'd rather have nice clean, but simple models than all the unpainted ones I do now.

After finishing these guys up, I pulled the last 10 of the Steel Legion Infantry platoon and got their exposed flesh painted, but that was it before it was time to go. Hopefully I'll finish those 10 guys by the end of the week, and then Saturday I can get the whole platoon marked and sealed. (And do any touch ups neccessary.)

Person Person, thanks for the encouragement!

Alright, slacked a bit this morning, but still got at least a coat of white on all 10 guys. When this army is done, I seriously never want to paint a white uniform again. And much as I love the steel legion models, they are really difficult to paint quickly because of all the straps for the suspenders, ammo, goggles, etc.

I did also manage to finish the green stuff on my bits-box Sly Marbo figure. I had to give Guardsman Marbo a sleeved jacket for his work in the cold wastes.

What are people's thoughts are putting Marbo on a termi-sized base? I'd kind of like to give him a little bit of scenery to stand on, and a fallen victim. Since he operates on his own all the time, I don't see it causing a problem in games. If anything, it would make him easier to hit/ attack in cc. Thoughts?

Cheers,

Cheers,

Yeah, I think I will go ahead and use a large base for him. I doubt it will ever be an issue.

p2, I didn't model the demo charge - I figure he's already planted it somewhere sneaky.

Ok, I finished up the last 10 Steel Legion troopers and now the 55 man platoon is nearly complete!

While I was waiting for the Dull Cote to dry on these guys, I got out the rest of the platoon and redid some of the snow on a few models.

And some close ups:

Now all I need to do is a few touch ups, some details like power-packs for the las cannons, and a fresh cote of Dull Cote, and the platoon is DONE. I have trouble getting close ups with my camera, but maybe some will be visible in this next batch.
Looking good! Hows the overall plan going?
Dude, I am so close to finishing this army I can TASTE IT! Finishing a whole platoon is exhillirating.
Great visors
Hey, thanks! The paint I use for them is a vallejo, and I think because of it's consistency it blends really well which makes it great for visors/glass. I used the same blue on the Seargh Light on the Snow Cat.
First of all good luck with your mission. I must say my favourite is the converted Chimera, followed very closely by the Valhallan platoon. They look bloody excellent, especially the weathering and snow effects which really enhance the look. Well done and keep going.
Thank you very much. I got to painting the Valhallans after I had warmed up a while on the Steel Legion, but before I was sick of painting white, so I think they got the better paint jobs. I'm glad you like the tank, it is one of my favorite pieces, too.
Nice work, really love this blog. Been following it for quite a while now.
I just love your paint scheme, but have you ever tried to apply some blue wash over the white clothes, and then drybrushed white again? I think it will make them stand out much more. Otherwise, keep up the awesome work!
/Leaf
Thanks very much! When I started painting these guys, I spent a lot more time layering up from battleship grey to fortress, codex, then white, so the uniforms on the early guys have more of a grey tinge. Then I got really, really tired of doing that and went from grey under coat pretty much straight to white with a little badab black in the recesses, and mud and grime splatters for contrast.
I think the blue wash is a good idea, but I want the blue on the visors to stand out more, and I really don't care for blue as a shader for white for the most part. It can look really good, but it's just not for me. It looks to crystalline and clean. I want this guys lookin' dirty and grimy!

Ok, on to the pics. I finally finished the platoon today, put new snow on a bunch of guys, put on details like the power packs for the lascannons, and now I am calling it DONE. I think I picked up my first Steel Legion guys about 2 years ago, and now they are all painted! I sprayed them with Dull Cote and I am turning the page.

Here are some selected guys:
Heavy Weapons Squad 1:

I used to put these guys in platoons and the lascannons in squads, until I saw how quickly HW teams die under the new codex.

Another Heavy Weapon team, mixed HB and AC. Also a Tau advisor snuck in there.

These HB teams are what got me to buy my first Steel Legion guys about 7 years ago, from which I built my 3rd edition army (then sold it. :( )I love those models.

And a close-up of some of my favorite models from my "suicide squad". Before the 4th ed. codex, I ran these guys as 10 men with a grenade launcher and nothing else, and they would charge out into no-man's land to grasp an objective, shield another unit, or serve as bait. Ah, the brave, brave men of my suicide squad. How many times they died.

Ok, with those guys down I have only 3 units left to paint in my ice-world army: Sly, and 2 squads of carapace vets. Of those 20 carapace vets, both sergeants and about 6 guys are already finished, as I used to run them as six-man vet squads. Anyhow, below are some wippies of them on my paint tray ready to be finished. They already have base colors on them, so I can take my time and detail them. This morning I clipped the ones off their bases who were on plain bases and added ready-concrete filler and bits of COD terrain for more texture.

When these 21 models are complete, I am calling this army done!
When I started painting these guys, I spent a lot more time layering up from battleship grey to fortress, codex, then white, so the uniforms on the early guys have more of a grey tinge. Then I got really, really tired of doing that and went from grey under coat pretty much straight to white with a little badab black in the recesses...
That's pretty much me. I want things to go fast. And when you have done the first few steps on the armour, it feels a lot easier to continue paitnting, and eventually, finishing it.
And now that you mention that the glasses wont pop out if blue wash is used, I see your point for why not to use it.
Also, congrats on your almost finished army.
White on Kasrkin look awesome.
Indeed.
Glad you like the Kasrkin. The white makes them look like storm/clone troopers, which was my original intent for them, back when I used to run a whole bunch of sanctioned psykers as Jedi. I was going to paint the armor with color stripes, like the clone troopers, but couldn't really find a way to do that and not have it look like big "shoot me" marks given the coloration of the rest of the army.

I got most of the first squad done today, just need some detailing. Unfortunately, I left my camera cable at home, so no pics.

You know, it's very strange. I love the way the Kasrkin look, but for some reason, I really don't like painting them. It may be that they have so many levels of cloth, plate, wires and doo dadds, that they are still confusing to me. I don't know.

I think I might have to tackle finishing the unit one model at a time, rather than production-lining to get the most out of them.

In other news, I assembled and primered my Sister of Battle Cannoness that I got from Savnock (thank you very much) and am looking forward to painting her because I need a break from White.

More tomorrow. Cheers.

Never really did much batch painting.
Yeah, I finished up the Kasrkin individually and it worked well. Batch painting is the only way I could get through so much infantry, though from time to time I would stop and paint a single guy. (Mostly the first batch of Valhallans were done one at a time.)

Ok, so today I finished the Carapace Veteran Squad Alpha! Pics are below. Unfortunately it was very dark and rainy today, so I had to take pics indoors, which means some are a tad blurry, as it's rather dark.

Here's the WIP shot of where I left them Yesterday:

And here's the finished squad:

And some individuals:

The head and power fist are from the Cadian command box. A power fist may not be an exactly economical use of points, but the bit looked so cool I had to use it, and I figure this is the best option for that - in a triple melta unit.

I took a break from white and did base colors on my cannoness:

And this project distracted me from painting for a couple of nights last month. I made custom trays for the sweet, sweet minis in my space hulk game. I can't wait to paint these guys, but since it's technically a board game, i don't have to do that in this mission.

3 Months... 30 years... A project Log of Unfinished Business - Kasrkin page 4

Lesson of the day: Don't handle miniatures before first swig of coffee.

Painting progress for this morning was somewhat retarded by the act of me dropping my work-tray with all my paints and minis on it about 5 seconds after picking it up. Luckily, Kasrkin are one-piece models, and none of the paint pots came open. Had I spilled paint on the carpet, this project log would most likely have come to a screeching halt as my wife would have killed me.

As it was, all I had to do was glue the cannoness back together, glue some troopers back on their bases, and I was good to go.

I managed to paint the ruins on the squad, and got the one guy who was only basecoated up to the same level as the rest of the unit with his first greys and blues.

More tomorrow....

Its just they look a bit out of place next to the regular troopers.
Thanks! See below for finished pics with snow on bases.
Damn they look nice.
Thank you.
Great project. I can't wait to see the army shots.
Your painting is superb. One question, though... is that blood on a lightsabe- I mean, energy sword?
Thanks! There is a near-complete army shot below. Once I finish Marbo, I'll lay them all out and borrow my work camera to take the money shots. Oh yeah. Blood on the snow, blood on the blades. It's a hard life in the Dnothian Scavenger Legion!
These minis are looking great! I really enjoy checking out what you've been getting accomplished.
Thanks Tekk! It's been great having encouragement to get this much done.

Ok, so today I finished painting and basing the last carapace veteran squad, so that means that now the only miniature left to paint in this army is Guardsman Marbo!

Here are the Kasrkin vets:

And here is the army on my shelf, minus the demolishers and marbo:

And speaking of Guardsman Marbo, here is the solution I worked out for his base, he's magnetized on a display base, which also has two magnets set into it for a fallen victim (and victim's head).

And that's it for now. If I get a chance I'll try to paint Marbo this weekend so I can start on another project next week. (Can't decide between my Sisters of battle, Tau, or Chaos. )

Ah, and one more pic:

Happy Halloween everyone!

Ok, haven't been able to post pics in a while, so there's alot comin'.

First off, the last mini from my Guard army, Marbo!

Sans magnetic victim and detailing on scenic base. I need to buy bits for the victims, so that will be shelved for a while.

And quick & dirty Chaos warriors. Pained the whole squad in one day while I was home from work one day this week!

And now for something completely different, Tau battlesuits.

My commander conversion, which I had begun painting earlier this year. Some grey on it from spraying his base with primer.

And the other two suits which I primered yesterday:

These were some of my first major conversions, and as such, they are a bit sloppy. The idea was great, but the execution a little primitive. All of the crisis suits have been given extend arms, torsos, and legs, with the lower legs and feet being custom castings. I also added a visor to the head and a collar of armor around the neck joint.

Anyhow, this morning I got a little more painting done - everyone is green!

With envy!! Think you're gonna do it?
Thanks! And will I finish everything? Probably not, allthough many things should go faster now, as a lot of what is left is models that have one or 2 colors painted already. The sisters for instance, all have 2-3 colors on them, the kroot the same.

Realistically, I imagine I will get just about everything except the Lizardmen and Death Korp done. We shall see.
Wow...

That storm sarg is something else...
Thanks. He likes you too.
No Problem. Check out my PLOG in my signature, i have a couple pretty cool poses there that you may like.
I do like your tau. I used to be all about the Tau before I got back into the guard when I found a whole bunch of Steel Legion guys cheap about 2-3 years back. Now that army is done ( in it's initial phase at least - I still dream of valkyries and basilisk squadrons) I am getting excited about Tau again. Especially if they get a new 'dex next year or the year after.

So today's update is SANS PICTURES. This has to do with me taking my camera with me in my Backpack and getting SOAKED on my bicycle. Even though it was in the pack, it got wet, and I forgot to take it out all day. Whether or not it works again remains to be sen after I've recharged it. So the bad news is, no pics for a while. (Although I am probably getting my B-day present from my wife early, and I'm pretty sure it's a much nicer camera. )

The good news is this weekend I made progress on the battle sisters squad, painting all the insignia, piping, and guns grey and giving them some badab magic wash, got a layer of highlights on the triad of battle suits, finished repainting 10 kroot (just need basing now) and repainted the Culexus assassin with a more detailed paint job.

I also decided that I am getting rid of 3 of the Piranas that I have assembled and base coated. They are not quite up to my current standards of building, so I am going to try to swap them for an unbuilt Devilfish or Hammerhead.

So, 18 days left, let's see what I can knock out!
That assassin is something else! Really well done!

The kroot's rifles seem a little bright though, maybe hit them with a wash?
Thanks, I had a fun time on the skull, trying to make it look like there were blood vessels and exposed tissue on the head. I don't know who sculpted that model, but it's one of my all-time favorite 40k models. You're right about the Kroot's rifle, of course, but I'm calling those guys done! That birdman must just take especially good care of his steel.

Ok, tonight I spent waaaaay too long on one model, given how much I have left to do, but I am really pleased with the results. I finished my canonness, giving her a jump back, some transfers in her book, and whippin' up a scenic base. Pics, then off to grab a few hours sleep (and put away my paints so I don't wake up murdered by my wife in the morning.)

Night all.

(noticed that some of the fleur de lys were sloppy in these pics and fixed it, as well as painting in the hole underneat the pylon)
Looks amazing. Transfers really add to the model.
Thanks! Yeah, I remember waaaay back when I first started painting trying to hand-paint a decent looking page in a wizard's book. That was before I realized that waterslide transfers could be used on things other than ships and planes1
Truly inspirational painting: I wasn't a fan of Kroot before, but having seen these, WOW!
Thanks! I think they have a lot of potential for creative painting. I was going for sort of a tropical bird look.
Okay, those Kroot are bangin'. I only wish I had 5 for that apox formation....

Ok, so lately I've been distracted from the Tau by my Sisters. How many points of WH do you have?
Thanks! I wasn't sure how the color scheme would work, and I think it does need the white hair/black weapons to keep from just being a big reddish blob.
Ok so Friday is the end day, and I'm not going to have nearly the list done. I am going to try and Finish my Tau crisis suits, Shas Ui, and the Seraphim squad by then. Then I'll post pics of all I've been working on for the last 2 weeks or so, and post a summary of what I've accomplished since starting this blog.

I just did a rough calculation, and while some of the minis had already been started, I think I averaged over a mini a day. We'll see how it all breaks down into "minis completed from scratch" and "minis already started and then finished". Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

3 Months... 30 years... A project Log of Unfinished Business -Now Painting Tau

Well, the smoke has cleared and I'm 30. I seem to have been avoiding updating this thread and moving on by going on a massive video gaming binge, but the time has come to sum it all up. First, here are the last round of pics of things I hurriedly finished up last week:

Vampire:

I'm happy with the way the wing turned out - not too happy with the face.

And my Tau Shas 'Ui - I sculpted the head from GS, and am happy with how it came out. I wish I had bought the Firewarriors I used to have new, though, cuz there's a lot of paint on the model that I couldn't strip even with Simple Green, and some gunk on the back under the backpack area. Oh well.

The second Kroot Squad:

The Ehtereal:

The second Pathfinders squad:

The Random Dead:

The last of my Khorne Models: (Kind of rushed these guys - and it shows. :( One horse is missing, being painted by a friend of mine who likes horses. )

Seraphim Sister Superior:

And that's the rest of the suff I got finished before my Birthday. Now I've got one tray of stuff that will polish off my Tau minis, sisters, and undead, leaving me with two large projects, my Krieg army and Lizardmen for 2010. I'm getting rid of some stuff that I wasn't able to get to; like all but one of my Piranhas and some random confrontation minis, and I'll keep going on these, but at a slower rate as I get back to sculpting and drawing.

Here's the tray I'm going to try and finish up:

Seraphim:

Project tray:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Alright, I wanted to do a quick numbers run down:

Models painted from scratch:
Vehicles: 1
Infantry: 72
Cavalry:10

Models finished that were already started:
Infantry: 37

Grand Total: 120 Models painted/finished in a little under 4 months. Not bad!

Thanks guys! I did get some more pics of the Baneblade, Holyleaf, though the flash plays hell with the transfers.

Thanks a lot Vet Sgt. I was really fueled by desperation - I had to unbury myeslf from projects!

Allright, some more pics in bound. So I managed to finish one of the crisis suits, but after painting the camo, I had to take a break, so I've been working on something not on the log - the Valkyrie I got on my Birthday. I've got the interior painted, and built a bench and some rails and handholds for the passengers, and then finished off the construction (except for weapons) today. Still not sure if I want to magnetize or just go ahead and glue it together.

PICS:

Crisis Suit in my water-based camo (Supposed to look like ripples in H20, don't know if it comes across or not.)

Early view of the conversion, showing how much larger the suit is than normal:

Front:

The Baneblade:

with flash:

Rear:

Don't make longer neck to suits, it ruins the whole original look. otherwise good work
Heh, well thanks for the input, but there's a reason I made them that way. I don't like the original look of the suit - too stunty. I lengthened the neck only slightly, and for 2 reasons: 1, I wanted to include an armor collar, since it's a pretty small join and I could see a lot of crisis pilots getting the heads of their suits blown off, and 2, I imagined that crisis suits enter combat a lot of time from high altitude, rocketing down to land on their feet, and would want a neck long enough to allow their head to have a field of vision past the torso as they descend.
The suit looks alot more grim and less cartoony thnx to the limb and neck extensions. Although I thought the water camo was supposed to be a stealth field in transition.

Baneblade looks ace.
Thanks very much. I love the idea of crisis suits, but wanted mine to look more like they do on the cover of the codex and in the concept art - tall and imposing. The BB is not nearly as detailed as it could be - I find that size of an armor model very intimidating!
I love your camo/paint scheme on the tau, can you tell me what colors you used?
