Ok, so last night I got the first layer of drybrushing done on the Bane Blade, (which I call "The Rightous Indignation") and this morning I primered the Chimera and cleaned the flash from, based, and primered the 8 steel legion lasgunners I have yet to paint. All in all, a good start!

@ His Master's Voice - The turrets are from 1/48 Russian tank kits (T-72s, I think from Academy, so not too expensive) modified with bits from the Vindicator, Tau Rail-Gun, and with a turret hatch created from a gun drone. I'm glad you like them, they were ridiculously expensive to kitbash!

Pics ye ask for, and pics ye shall receive. I'm actually quite pleased with the how the Chaos are coming (though I am getting tired of painting red - almost as much as I'm tired of painting white!), however they are currently staying at my friend's house so I don't have to lug them back and forth on the bus to battle him.

The Lizardmen are around though, so here's a couple. The Lizzies are unfortunately the lowest priority, as there are just SO MANY of them, and the army contains some of my first paint jobs from night on 12 years ago. With that in mind, I am just trying to unify the army through some reapainting, thematic basing, and good, clean table top paint jobs. Nothing fancy for the Lizzies!

Ok, on to the progress. Last night and this morning I managed to get some work done on the Snow Cat. The first step for the way I paint the winter tanks is several dirt and grim washes, followed by massive amounts of drybrushing and then more weathering and battle damage.

Finally, something really exciting: I finished converting the last 2 members of my 50 man steel legion platoon. I cut off the arms of the 'point and shoot' officer, of which I had somehow ended up with 3, and turned him into a sergeant, and cut the weapons and ammo off a grenade launcher guy to make one more trooper:

At least I got some work done with my portable painting kit, and started the LOTR bog wraiths and the second barrow wight. Those are easy to do on the move, as it's mostly drybrushing and washing.

Tomorrow I'll try and get some more paint and pictures done, but for the moment, that is all.

Man, these guys look great. Some will be easier to cut apart, some more difficult, but with some Green Stuff and a good saw, I am looking forward to having a full platoon and enough to convert some other stuff.

Unfortunately, they weren't all that well packed, so I have at least 7 weapon breaks already. :( Ah well, that's what glue is for.

I'm really very excited about these guys, but won't be able to even touch them this week, as I need to get a Star Wars RPG off the ground. Ah well.

The crew has several sets of 2 guys, and this guys were a cinch to cut apart. I had to do only minor patching to one arm and shoulder pad with green stuff, and chose to cut off the handle of an entrenching tool which was molded as a huge object for purposes of removing the guy from the mold. Cutting the resin is pretty easy with a new #11 Xacto blade, and a little bit of sytrene rod fixed it right up.

All in all, I think it will work very well to make these guys individuals. The blocks of 6 troopers will be a bit harder to work with, but sill manageable I think.

I also managed to finished up one (very small) entry on the lists - the Barrow Wights are done! These guys are great models, but I have to say that my paint jobs are very basic. Mostly washing and drybrushing, not a lot of detail work. But these guys are just for fun, and I was tired of them being bare metal.

Besides, the basic paint job that gets done is better than the amazing paint job that is never completed, says I.

Will do. There are some that will be a little trickier, and I think I'll have to use my dremel on some to hollow out behind rifle stocks and arms where the piece was designed solid for casting, but I should be able to get most of them apart.

Working with the new chaos plastics reminded me of how much I love them, so I have promoted the Warriors of Chaos army to top priority. (It's also the smallest model count, so hopefully I'll have it done quicker!)

These models are so, very, very nice. I am willing to forgive GW of so much, based entirely on the strength and value of the new WHFB cavalry boxes. So many bits, great heads for the riders, and the coolest mounts ever. I bought these guys mostly for the horses. If I could have an army of just horses, I would, they are that cool.

Some minor conversions - gave him a sword, made a new skull mask for the horse from a spare banner top. Nothing too exciting.

The same can be said for my paint jobs on the Chaos stuff - I am going for clean, complete, and fast, rather than super detailed or converted. Partly, this is because I feel the models in the range are so strong that I don't feel the need to do much converting, and partly I just want them done. I've been playing them and having a lot of fun with them, and I'd like to play with a fully painted army.

Here is one of the 10 hounds I have painted. The light was crap this morning, so he doesn't look great, and you can see where the snow basing has gotten in the fur recesses, from improper transport, but I am pretty proud of these guys. I had to sculpt ears on them, since I don't like dogs with antlers (WTF?). The whole squad was painted, based, and finished in an afternoon, thanks to the new washes and some drybrushing.

This is a cool model, because it is the first model a friend of mine painted. Impressive, no? Girls are so much better at painting when they start than guys. (I know MY first model didn't look this good!) I did a little touch up with blood red to highlight the model, but that's it. I was very impressed.

And the rest of the knights. I have the same sentiment about the horses here as with the marauders. I can't believe how cool these models are. The knights are really good, but it's the steeds that blow me away. At the risk of being tarred and feathered, I have to praise GW for the value of this kit: 5 knights with options that are AWESOME models for $25, vs. the old metal knights for $10 a piece?
Well done GW. (Of course, I would like to lecture them on the pricing of all the new IG stuff, but that's another thread.)

And, very exciting, my jeweler's saw arrived, so I had a go at cutting apart some more of the Gorgon crew. With the 2 I had cut apart earlier, I've now got a full squad with Vox, Sergeant, Flamer, and Mortar cut apart and based. I still need to do some resculpting on arms, but I've cut down and away the filler that was left over from the single casting, and hollowed out behind rifles and gas mask tubes with my dremel.

Pretty pleased with how it came out overall. I bought a Tamiya weathering kit which was used for some of the lighter rust effects. The mud is backing soda, glue, and paint mix. I really love painting vehicles, but sadly, this is the last one I have, so until I get the rest of my projects finished, it's mostly infantry now. (Which will be good motivation for me to finish these up, so I can buy me some Valkyries!)

There's a scientific reason for that. It has to do with how males and females develop differently and at different rates in early years(it's the same reason why females tend to have much better hand writing than males do as they generally develop faster than males). I may be able to find the exact science and what not, but that tends to be the reason.

Thanks, Person! Yeah, I actually bought 6 of them to use for my infantry platoons (unless I'm facing a template-heavy army). I am waiting for a can of magnetic paint to arrive to see how well I can magnetize them. They only fit 8, but since my infantry squads have 8 guys plus the heavy weapon team, it's perfect.

I'm also finding it useful to organize minis as I paint them.

Thanks! I love weathering, it's probably my favorite thing to do in painting. I'd really like to do some more vehicles, but alas, I'm all done with them until I can plow through the rest of this! Actually, I did a quick check, and I am really, really close to finishing my first IG and Chaos armies.

I do like the chaos hounds much better with ears. I can't believe they left them off the kit. As for the snipers, I actually just swapped the weapons. A lot of GW figures are not individual sculpts at all, but resculpts of the same figure. The guy with the soft cap is almost identical to the guys with the fur hat - just his hat and kit on the forward sid e of his body are different.

Yeah, given their long history of fighting Eldar Pirate scum, I should probably paint littlle tiny cuts in each trooper's overcoat, to show where it was pierced through by a shuriken when the previous owner bought the farm.

Ok, so I was on vacation all last week, and spent a lot of time with family and friends, and almost not time painting. :(

I have managed to get two officers done in the last couple of days:

Valhallan Officer:

A little bummed at how the picture turned out. Direct daylight + white paintjob = difficult to photograph. This is the Chenkov model, and it's actually quite decent with a little bit of work. The original model has an oversized gun and somewhat gorilla-like porportions. Trimming the arms down at the shoulder and replacing the bolt pistol with the hand of the pilot from the Macragge box set did a wonder.

Then there's my Baneblade officer, which I use as "Counts As" fleet officer:

I added the gas mask and filter pack with green stuff, and used guitar wire for the tube in the mask. I like the way this guy turned out.

After taking this picture I worked on the snow a bit more, mashing some pigments into the still-drying paste, so the snow looks less fresh than it does here. I'll show him again when I finish up the company command squad.

I'm getting very excited to be nearing completion of my first Imperial Guard army. I really love the Valhallan and Steel Legion models, and it was the diorama in the 3rd ed 40k rulebook of Vlahallans in white vs. Tyranids which got me excited about 40k years ago, so this army is the realization of my starting motivations for collecting 40k.

Today I didn't finish anything, but made good progress on several projects, including the 10 skeletons, the Master of Ordnance, Commisar Yarrick, and the heavy weapons team which will complete my company command. (Not an ideal build, but this army is much more about getting my crap painted anyway.)

In other news, I am having to do a little bit of a Jedi Mind Trick on myself to keep from painting my Space Hulk figures. I'm telling myself that they are "Game Pieces" not "Miniatures" so they technically don't fall under the jurisdiction of my personal challenge to paint all my minis by my Birthday.

Thanks Hans!

I have used several methods to create the snow effect as I've gone, and learned a bit. The basic components are baking soda (or bicarbonate of soda if you're in the UK) and white glue (I use Elmers.)

Most of the bases are built up using aid-drying clay, which is very cheap, easy to work with, and dries quickly. The downside is that it is fragile. More recently I have built the form of the snow mounds, etc, using ready-mix concrete patch. This stuff is great. It dries quickly, adds a nice weight to the model, has some texture and dries hard as rock. In the picture of the command squad below, the grenade launcher trooper has a base with air-drying clay, wheras the missile team has the concrete patch.

To begin with, I used to paint the base blue, highlight with white, and then apply a thin layer of glue and dust them with the baking soda. This made for a nice, newly-fallen deep snow effect. However, this method invariably has the problem that the soda rubs off with use, which is why it was important to have the base painted beneath it, so that it would look like frozen ice and earth under showing through.

More recently, I have discovered a more durable mix which also eliminates most of the need to paint the base. (I just leave it the base-coat grey.)

The current mix is white glue, rubbing alcohol, and baking soda, mixed into a semi-liquid paste. The alcohol is important to use instead of water, because it evaporates quickly. This is applied with a brush or stick. When dried it is hard and doesn't scrape or rub off. It lacks the granular, newly-fallen look of the dusting method, though. On the plus side, it is very durable and I have found that it can be worked with as it dries for varying effects. On the missile launcher team, you'll see that I've worked with the current alcohol paste and experiment with dusting over the top of that, to try and go for the look of new fallen snow on top of existing slush and grime. I've started using and old brush with some pigment in the bristles to mash the past to make it look muddy and grimy.

Anyhow, that's how I'm approaching it.

Thanks! I used to be just the same... I'd buy new stuff and start new armies all the time. I finally stopped when I realized I was shopping for things I already had and had just forgotten about.

Thanks Cadian! I am trying to paint for at least an hour before I go to work each day. The next 2 coming weekends my wife has to work Saturdays, so I'll have some little painting marathons on those days and try to tackle some of the larger projects, like putting the finishing touches on the infantry platoon (4 out of 5 squads are painted, but they all need markings).

Thanks Sicarious. The steel legion are my first love, and they are almost done. After I finish the skellies and advisors, I have about 10 lasgun guys and a Sergeant to finish in my 50 man platoon, and putting squad markings on their bases as my next project. I just removed her weapons and did a hand swap on one side to turn her into a "Primaris Psyker" (*cough*Jedi*cough*) for use with my carapace vets. Eventually the goal is to have an army of the Kasrkin models painted white, led by 2 primaris psykers and deploying via Valkries for a "Clone Strike" army. THAT project is a ways away!

You're right. Sometimes I don't dilute my paint enough if I'm in a hurry, and that makes the finish "furry".

Yesterday I had breakfast with my Mom in the morning, so no painting before work. And my Space Hulk night got cancelled. So it was a sadly game-free day. (Though I did rent "Drag Me to Hell" which somewhat made up for not being able to play SH.)

Alright, slacked a bit this morning, but still got at least a coat of white on all 10 guys. When this army is done, I seriously never want to paint a white uniform again. And much as I love the steel legion models, they are really difficult to paint quickly because of all the straps for the suspenders, ammo, goggles, etc.

What are people's thoughts are putting Marbo on a termi-sized base? I'd kind of like to give him a little bit of scenery to stand on, and a fallen victim. Since he operates on his own all the time, I don't see it causing a problem in games. If anything, it would make him easier to hit/ attack in cc. Thoughts?

Thanks! I'm saving the blood on the snow for my Khorne Mortals, though. A lot of the infantry have rusted ruins or mud on the base to provide contrast, which you can see in the following pics.

Hey, thanks! The paint I use for them is a vallejo, and I think because of it's consistency it blends really well which makes it great for visors/glass. I used the same blue on the Seargh Light on the Snow Cat.

Thank you very much. I got to painting the Valhallans after I had warmed up a while on the Steel Legion, but before I was sick of painting white, so I think they got the better paint jobs. I'm glad you like the tank, it is one of my favorite pieces, too.

Thanks very much! When I started painting these guys, I spent a lot more time layering up from battleship grey to fortress, codex, then white, so the uniforms on the early guys have more of a grey tinge. Then I got really, really tired of doing that and went from grey under coat pretty much straight to white with a little badab black in the recesses, and mud and grime splatters for contrast.
I think the blue wash is a good idea, but I want the blue on the visors to stand out more, and I really don't care for blue as a shader for white for the most part. It can look really good, but it's just not for me. It looks to crystalline and clean. I want this guys lookin' dirty and grimy!

Ok, on to the pics. I finally finished the platoon today, put new snow on a bunch of guys, put on details like the power packs for the lascannons, and now I am calling it DONE. I think I picked up my first Steel Legion guys about 2 years ago, and now they are all painted! I sprayed them with Dull Cote and I am turning the page.

Before the 4th ed. codex, I ran these guys as 10 men with a grenade launcher and nothing else, and they would charge out into no-man's land to grasp an objective, shield another unit, or serve as bait. I got most of the first squad done today, just need some detailing. Unfortunately, I left my camera cable at home, so no pics.

You know, it's very strange. I love the way the Kasrkin look, but for some reason, I really don't like painting them. It may be that they have so many levels of cloth, plate, wires and doo dadds, that they are still confusing to me. I don't know.

I think I might have to tackle finishing the unit one model at a time, rather than production-lining to get the most out of them.

In other news, I assembled and primered my Sister of Battle Cannoness that I got from Savnock (thank you very much) and am looking forward to painting her because I need a break from White.

Yeah, I finished up the Kasrkin individually and it worked well. Batch painting is the only way I could get through so much infantry, though from time to time I would stop and paint a single guy. (Mostly the first batch of Valhallans were done one at a time.)

Painting progress for this morning was somewhat retarded by the act of me dropping my work-tray with all my paints and minis on it about 5 seconds after picking it up. Luckily, Kasrkin are one-piece models, and none of the paint pots came open. Had I spilled paint on the carpet, this project log would most likely have come to a screeching halt as my wife would have killed me.

As it was, all I had to do was glue the cannoness back together, glue some troopers back on their bases, and I was good to go.

I managed to paint the ruins on the squad, and got the one guy who was only basecoated up to the same level as the rest of the unit with his first greys and blues.

I also solved my problem with base size for Marbo. I've magnetized his base so that it will clip right onto a large base that will have scenic elements and a victim or two.

That was an objective I built for our last Apocalypse game, which had the forces of the Imperium trying to recapture a relic which was protected by a stasis field.

These were some of my first major conversions, and as such, they are a bit sloppy. The idea was great, but the execution a little primitive. All of the crisis suits have been given extend arms, torsos, and legs, with the lower legs and feet being custom castings. I also added a visor to the head and a collar of armor around the neck joint.

Anyhow, this morning I got a little more painting done - everyone is green!

Thanks! And will I finish everything? Probably not, allthough many things should go faster now, as a lot of what is left is models that have one or 2 colors painted already. The sisters for instance, all have 2-3 colors on them, the kroot the same.

Realistically, I imagine I will get just about everything except the Lizardmen and Death Korp done. We shall see.

I do like your tau. I used to be all about the Tau before I got back into the guard when I found a whole bunch of Steel Legion guys cheap about 2-3 years back. Now that army is done ( in it's initial phase at least - I still dream of valkyries and basilisk squadrons) I am getting excited about Tau again. Especially if they get a new 'dex next year or the year after.

So today's update is SANS PICTURES. This has to do with me taking my camera with me in my Backpack and getting SOAKED on my bicycle. Even though it was in the pack, it got wet, and I forgot to take it out all day. Whether or not it works again remains to be sen after I've recharged it. So the bad news is, no pics for a while. (Although I am probably getting my B-day present from my wife early, and I'm pretty sure it's a much nicer camera. )

The good news is this weekend I made progress on the battle sisters squad, painting all the insignia, piping, and guns grey and giving them some badab magic wash, got a layer of highlights on the triad of battle suits, finished repainting 10 kroot (just need basing now) and repainted the Culexus assassin with a more detailed paint job.

I also decided that I am getting rid of 3 of the Piranas that I have assembled and base coated. They are not quite up to my current standards of building, so I am going to try to swap them for an unbuilt Devilfish or Hammerhead.

Thanks, I had a fun time on the skull, trying to make it look like there were blood vessels and exposed tissue on the head. I don't know who sculpted that model, but it's one of my all-time favorite 40k models. You're right about the Kroot's rifle, of course, but I'm calling those guys done! That birdman must just take especially good care of his steel.

Ok, tonight I spent waaaaay too long on one model, given how much I have left to do, but I am really pleased with the results. I finished my canonness, giving her a jump back, some transfers in her book, and whippin' up a scenic base. Pics, then off to grab a few hours sleep (and put away my paints so I don't wake up murdered by my wife in the morning.)

Thanks! I wasn't sure how the color scheme would work, and I think it does need the white hair/black weapons to keep from just being a big reddish blob. I was inspired by one of the character class illustrations in the Star Wars RPG.

Hi and thanks, but don't get the wrong idea - a lot of these had already been painted or were in-progress when I started this blog. For some reason, I had developed the terrible habit of painting entire squads until they were about 2/3 of the way done, then getting distracted. Even know, I am trynig to quickly finish up models that are very nearly done, and have been so for months. I'll have to do a summary of what I've achieved after Friday (when I turn 30). I'm nowhere near done with everything, of course, but making good progress.

I'm holding off more pics till then, so I can do a final upload of what I've finished.

Tonight I finished the Pathfinders and the LOTR undead. Yay!

Heh, well thanks for the input, but there's a reason I made them that way. I don't like the original look of the suit - too stunty. I lengthened the neck only slightly, and for 2 reasons: 1, I wanted to include an armor collar, since it's a pretty small join and I could see a lot of crisis pilots getting the heads of their suits blown off, and 2, I imagined that crisis suits enter combat a lot of time from high altitude, rocketing down to land on their feet, and would want a neck long enough to allow their head to have a field of vision past the torso as they descend.

Thanks very much. I love the idea of crisis suits, but wanted mine to look more like they do on the cover of the codex and in the concept art - tall and imposing. The BB is not nearly as detailed as it could be - I find that size of an armor model very intimidating!

The green areas are:

Orkhide Shade base coat
A mix of Emerald Green and Orkhide shade for the edging/ highlights
Vallejo Scorpy Green as the pattern/ final highlight

The blue areas are:
Regal Blue base coat
Enchanted Blue Edge/highlight
Vallejo Electric Blue pattern/final highlight

I really like the Vallejo paints for fine details, but nothing beats the citadel colours for the bulk of model painting, IMHO.
