Newbie Ork Boy trying his hand out at painting.

So after way too long of preparation (Read: I'm a coward) I finally set along to painting one of my boyz. I started off with a regular slugga boy, as I figure they're pretty disposable. <<

Anyway, here's the boy. Took me about an hour and twenty minutes to finish. Keep in mind he's not completely painted because I don't have all the paint I need for his belts and weapons and teeth.

Pretty terrible huh? (Side Note: Need a digital camera for this stuff)

Things I know I did wrong: The brown's too bright. Takes away from the rest of the model I think. Need a darker shade. Also I don't know why but when I was painting with the beastial brown I could NOT keep my hand still. Any other color I could sorta work fine but when I went to paint his pants it would not stop shaking. Which is why there's some overlap on his right boot...except the belt. I have no excuse for those flipping belts. I just painted right over them without care and now I feel terrible for it. ;;

I AM happy with the armor and the skin, mostly.

So what I guess I wana ask is....how'd I do for my first one?

Well the first thing some are going to tell you is the Mold lines that looks like are still there but i could be wrong, other then that they look like they could use more DAKKA! =) they look good so far. For the Photo. Try setting the camera on a flat solid surface say the table and bring the model to it where it looks like it is in focus and then take a pic if its a Phone then well i have no input on that one. just keep on truckin till you get a better camera so we can see the model better

Looks like he's a bit dark. Many people prefer bringing them up slowly to a lighter shade, but if you like dark orks, then good for you!

Looks like he's a bit dark. Maybe not THAT dark, maybe mix some goblin green in with the dark angel green for the next coat. Thank you lots for the suggestion though.

Well the first thing some are going to tell you is the Mold lines that looks like are still there but i could be wrong, other then that they look like they could use more DAKKA! =) they look good so far.
Try backing it up a half inch at a time till it gets in focus, it looks like the Built in focus of the camera aimed wrong and got a piece of the back ground, to prevent it take a pic of the model in front of a white background to prevent auto focusing. hope that helps

An hour and twenty minutes for a single boy? Dear god! You'll never finish an ork army at the spee your going buddy. Try using more washes. It helps horde armies get on the tabletop faster and creates natural shading without any effort. Other than that, it looks good.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, take care of the mold lines.

I can't tell that well from the pictures, but I think you need more contrast. Right now it just looks like one basecoat on everything and nothing else. For beginners, I'd say that washes are probably the easiest way of adding contrast and definition, and I'd agree with you when you say that the brown is too bright. I use graveyard earth for my Orks, and with a black wash it works fairly well.

It's not so much terrible as "unfinished". For me, the paint job you've done would probably represent the basic stage of painting. ie getting the base colors down (dark shades) and preparing to start layering over lighter colors to bring out the shadows of the muscles etc.

I would look up some tutorials on basic layering as well as even some edge highlighting.
Even a basic use of these techniques will help make your models look at lot nicer.

Re:Newbie Ork Boy trying his hand out at painting.

What I do for boyz is a paint assembly line. Ill prime them all at once, then just paint the skin, over and over and over. Then all the skin is painted. Then Ill paint the highlights of the skin, over and over. Then the pants, then the shirts.....I think your getting the idea. It helps you speed up your painting skills because your painting the same thing a million times over. By the time your done with the last boy (I usually do them in groups of 10) youlll realize his skin, or shirt or whatever looks way better then the first one.
This is a great method for getting used to painting things. And dont feel bad, your just starting out as a painter. You honestly cant come on this website, see some of the awesome paintjobs (Or what killed me was seeing pics from CMON, damn those people are pros) on here and expect to be close to that good. Your actually off to a good start right now. Youll learn tricks, and now that your painting, youll know what advice to ask for. Keep at it man and good luck!
