RE: How to deal with a Tyranid Hierodule?

Is this a trick question? You can only either ignore it (it does only move 6") or charge it with your Bloodthirster and a few units containing hidden PFists.

Although the two Mass points are a bit annoying both your hidden fists and the BThirster have Strength equal to or greater than its Toughness, meaning every wound inflicted drops a mass point on a roll of 4+ (think of the two mass points as Feel No Pain for the first two wounds you cause). I still think you could drop it in about 3 rounds of combat if you try.

Also remember the thing only has 4 Attacks, so it may look big but it doesn't put out all that much damage actually.

P.S. I only just skimmed over the Gargantuan creature rules so if I missed something crucial, my apologies.

Oh, and you should also let us know whether this is the Barbed or Scythed variety of Hierodule.

It was not a trick question. I have seen him play it, but never faced it myself. basically, I just know nothing about it. I believe it is Scythed.

RE: How to deal with a Tyranid Hierodule?

Well, it only moves 6 inches.

It's bio-acid spray its peraps its deadliest element to you (being S5 and AP3).

It does have an effective 7 wounds (5 wounds 2 mass points) at T8 and a 2+ save, but only 4 attacks at S10 (5 on the charge, of course).

So that tells me if you can ignore it and kill everything else, do so.

Otherwise, you don't want to let it spray and charge you, so you chould be charging it if you can. Those first two wounds are Mass points, meaning any wound you cause will be ignored until you cause a severe wound. If the Strength of your attack is equal to or greater than its Toughness you cause a severe wound on a roll of 4+. If the Strength of the attack is less than the Toughness, you need to roll a '6' to cause a severe wound.

Its just like a 'Feel No Pain' save in a way, in that the severity roll is made after the 'to wound' roll is successfully made and armor saves are passed/failed.

Your Blood Thirster is definitely the best bet to knock off these Mass Points. He strikes before the Hierodule and only needs '3+' to hit. On the turn he charges (with the +1A) you will statistically cause an average of 2 (unsavable) wounds on the Hierodule. If you're lucky you'll make both the severity rolls and get rid of those Mass points right there. . .if not, you'll be causing an average of 1.67 wounds per round on the Hierodule with the BThirster's base 5 Attacks.

In return, if the Hierodule directs his attacks back at your Thirster, you'll suffer an average of of .83 failed saves a round from the Hierodule's 4 S10 attacks. So you'll be on the winning end of that battle as long as your Thirster is supported by at least one unit of Bezerkers (and you don't get unlucky on those 'Severity' rolls in the first two wounds).

A basic Aspiring Champ with 4 Attacks and a Powerfist should cause an average of 1 (unsavable) wound on the Hierodule a round (not including the Severity roll).

So I think you'll kill the beast in 3-4 rounds of combat if you charge it with a Blood Thirster and at least 2 units with PFist wielding Aspiring Champs.

It may seem like quite a hurdle but remember that it's nearly 500 points of his army.
