Hivefleet yakface

Beware the Great Devourer!

From beyond the depths they come, united under the single never-ending purpose to wipe out all non-Scottish actors who have played James Bond. . .

Winged Hive Tyrant

w/twin-linked Devourers
w/twin-linked Devourers

This Winged Hive Tyrant is a conversion using a Hive Tyrant's legs and tail combined with a heavily converted Carnifex torso and head along with heavily converted Dragon wings. The conversion was done on commission by Insaniak.

You can read the entire blog detailing the construction and painting of this big beastie right HERE.

The model has rare earth magnets embedded in it which allows me to switch between x2 Sctyhing Talon arms and x2 twin-linked Devourers. This also gives me the ability to add or remove Toxin Sacs, Adrenal Glands and Implant Attack Biomorphs.

Since my army is run as a stealer shock list, that means the winged Tyrant is almost always an integral part of my strategy and therefore receives quite a few upgrades. Typical loadout is as follows:

  • x2 twin-linked Devourers, Acid Maw, Adrenal Glands (+1I), Enhanced Senses (+1BS), Implant Attack, Toxin Sacs (+1S), Toxic Miasma, Winged, Warp Field - 239 points.

Tyranid Warriors

I have Warriors just because I like the way the models look. The Warrior standing on the rock is a conversion, with his right knee and ankle being cut and greenstuffed to make him look like he's leaping off the rock.

When I do use them in a game I keep them as cheap as possible by taking only:

  • Scything Talons, Rending Claws, Extended Carapace - 27 points per model.
  • Sometimes I also give them leaping for a total of - 35 points per model.

Genestealers

My stealers are almost always taken in units comprised of even numbered units (usually either 6 or 8 stealers) and the only upgrades they get are:

  • Extended Carapace and Scuttlers - 23 points per model.

They are the real shock force of the army and the Scuttler (Scout) ability allows them to jump all over the enemy usually by the 2nd turn. It's a real race for the opponent to try to kill all the stealers before they overwhehlm them.

Spinegaunts

The Spinegaunts are mainly just taken as a way to get another cheap troops choice into the army, but they also can fill a nice role of soaking fire from enemy units that fail their target priority test on the first turn trying to fire at the Stealers.

Because the Stealers Scuttle, that means the Gaunts need to as well (to be in front on the first turn). That means they get:

  • Spinefist and Scuttlers - 7 points per model.

Raveners

I love the Ravener model but it blows that there is only one real pose (different heads don't count!) and it is a real pain to try to convert the model as well (mad props to those who have managed to do so with success).

However, I was able to achieve a bit of difference between the models simply by bending they body and tail slightly with a pair of pliers and using differing arm positions.

In games, they function in units of one for the most part and have:

  • Rending Claws, Scything Talons - 40 points per model.

Meiotic Spores

Meiotic Spores are really a scare tactic as they usually freak the opponent out more than they actually cause damage, although there is always a game or two that helps to reinforce their fearsome reputation by nuking all of the opponent's best units.

With the publishing of Imperial Armor Apocalypse it is no longer legal to field Meiotic mines up to three as a single Force Organization Choice (it's one per FOC now) so unfortunately that means I'm usually not able to fit more than one into my army at a time now.

Bummer.

Gunfex

This is a standard "Gunfex" pattern Carnifex as I describe in my Carnifex article.

Venom Cannon, Barbed Strangler, Enhanced Senses (+1BS) & Reinforced Chitin (+1W) - 163 points.

It provides the much needed Anti-vehicle firepower while the stealers and Tyrant take care of the enemy infantry.

What's Next?

Well, I'd really like to get this army painted up to 1,850 points so I could take it to tournaments as right now if I want to play it at that level I have to use some unpainted models.

The whole goal of this army is that it is the first one I've painted fully myself to a quality standard that I feel would actually allow me to have a chance to win tournaments (as opposed to being held back by the painting scores I tend to get for my Ork and IG armies).

Unfortunately, it takes me forever and a day to paint the models in this army so I have no idea when I will actually accomplish that goal.

Next up for the army would be for me to actually finish highlighting the 2nd unit of Stealers (that I actually took to Adepticon half finished).

After that, I will probably add another Gunfex, a third Warrior (just so that unit is legal to field), 3 Zoanthropes (cause I love the models) and then maybe a Lictor just for fun. At some point I will definitely have to paint another unit of 8 Stealers, but I'm really not looking forward to that!

Sample Army List

Here is my 1,000 point army which was 1/4 of the Dakka Detachment's team that we took to Adepticon 2007 and did quite well with:
