Hello.
This is my first article, so it won't be the best you've ever seen and I'm taking a big leap from occasional edit!
I believe that terrain is a very important part of game play.It is okay without at least mediocre terrain, but it can greatly enhance a game.
Also, I'm not very good so I'm hoping that this will help me and others.
PLEASE CONTRIBUTE!
You can add tips, small tutorials, links, pictures and any other terrain related info or advice that may help. Please add it under the correct letter, starting with a dash to show where one starts.
thank you.
A)
Army kind of useful for terrain
B)
Bunkers, good for snipers to hide in, and the like. Check out Aegis Defense Lines from GW. Some form of thick carved cardboard works as well.
C)
Cave; combine with the 'Hill' idea by carving a small hole, and use bark to line it for an authentic rocky look.
D)
Depth; if your terrain has depth, it adds to its character and adds a great feel to any piece.
E)
Electrics not real ones, ones to make it look good like the forge world power pylons
F)
Fence - Often overlooked in 40K, a wooden palisades often used as a defensive protection from armies in warhammer fantasy. The fence is also useful in 40k as well a chain link fence would go very well in a urban table in a forested table roughly cut wooden dowels can be useful as a makeshift protection.
Fortification. high up, you benefit from a 3+ cover save for being in a building in 40K. A range of buildings are sold from GW, and like bunkers, could be carved from cardboard, polystyrene, or some other material.

Gore! - ( Quick gore making tutorial - http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Quick_n_Easy_Gore
)
H)
Hills; Universal terrain. Use either the 'stepped' approach by stacking layers of foamcore, or shape high density polystyrene for a more natural look.

I)
Island; simply widen a river section and add polystyrene to your board
J)
Jungle; group trees together in dense clumps on medium sized bases. Repeat several times to create an effective looking jungle.
K)
L)
Landing Pads Or Landing zones, they are from a simple airstrip to a helipad. you can model them to the type of table you play. I.E. a urban table a heliport on a building or in a main deployment zone as either an aesthetic touch or an objective
M)
Minefields; useful in scenarios, and can be made from spare sprue.
N)
O)
Open Terrain, the bits in between terrain, good for long-range shooting from vehicles.
P)
Pillbox
Q)
quirks funny things to have in games
R)
ROADS a basic way is to PVA glue where you want the road, then sprinkle on sand(grey gravel works well and doesn't need painting).Let that dry and repeat to form a second layer.Add a third if it needs it, then paint grey.
S)
SANDBAGS. Can be easily made with 'green stuff' cuboids squashed lightly together. They are very good for in ruins, for cover or as an emplacement (I.E. with a heavy bolter on a piece of sprue stuck in).
T)
Trenches Trenches have often been dug for defense. In the pre-firearm eras, they were mainly a type of hindrance for an attacker of a fortified location, such as the moat around a castle (this is technically called a ditch).
U)
under ground sometimes hard to do but a real treat if you do it
V)
very cool
W)
Watchtowers; A more complicated project, but suitable for both 40k and WHFB
X)
Y)
Z)
Ziggurat; A more complicated terrain piece. Use layers of polystyrene to create the basic shape, then use a scalpel to carve detail.
