The built-in discount on many older Battleforces/Battalions will get slimmer. Primer will now be $15.75. It will be $29.00 US for 10 Imperial Guardsmen. 40K Codex books will be $33.00 US. New hardback WFB Army Books go up to $41.25.

Look at this list carefully, then buy, buy, buy before the increase if it's something you planned to purchase anyway. This list covers pretty much everything in the GW product line except the new Finecast line.

Note that there are US and Canadian prices on this Excel spreadsheet, so look carefully for the price column that is relevant to you.

LOL, I was just looking at an old WD, 20 Catachans for $22. Now the sames ones cost $30 for 10. Anyone care to do the % increase on that over 10 years?

Well the Catachans are the Mercedes Benz of models.

Hilarious!

I gave my son a box of Catachans the other day. I'd had it since they were released in 1999. It had the original slip cover box. Of course, these models were 20 for $35 till just a couple years ago. Now they'll be $58 for 20. Ouch!

Bugfuggers....

DE Warriors and Wyches are increased by nearly 20%, from $24.75 to $29.00. Granted, they are still on the (relatively) cheap side, but... seriously? I haven't the spleen left today to look at any more...

I think they actually just lost my business. No way in hell am I paying $44 for for a ten man squad of SM of any variety... It's getting to the point where buying third party isn't even worth it (with discounts starting at those prices I mean).

He was two years old when the models were released. A friend of mine at GW at the time got them for me without my even asking at a significant discount figuring I'd really enjoy them. All these years I only cannibalized a few parts out of the set for conversions, so when my son said he wanted to buy some Catachans for $24.75/box to use as vets in his mostly Cadian army, I stopped him and passed him the box of 20 I had gotten twelve years ago for less than $20.

Which is roughly 25% A YEAR. Wow. I wish I'd know to stock up to sell them on ebay.

Think I should stock up now so I can sell them for $60 for 10 in 2021?

Course by then a coke will cost $6...

So with the metals still AWOL, it's actually kinda hard for me to judge what the actual 'price hike' entails this time around

It depends on if our robot overlords will allow us entertainment when we're not plugged into the Grid.

Seriously, though, this is all kinds of ridiculous. So much for the new DE line being reasonably priced. Knew that wouldn't last long, or would last just long enough for me to get interested in them as they get a price hike.

You're comparing US to Canadian, not US to new US. Tac squad isn't increasing.

Format on this could have been one hell of a lot easier to read.

Well, this cements my decision to not start a new army in 40K. Between the price increases last year and this, they've seen their last dollar from me.

Now that I think of it, I don't think I've bought anything in a gw store in 5+ years, or a FLGS in a year.

If you look at the spreadsheet, it's pretty damn clear what's being hiked in price. All the items going up in price say "price change" next to them. Of course, the new "Finecast" models will remain a mystery, but there's plenty on the spreadsheet that is not, the majority of the product line.

So is this the hike for the year or just because the resins are coming out? Or can you (not me, haven't bought in years) expect an 'adjustment' in the fall?

Please, glance at the list before posting questions, you'd be amazed what questions it will answer, like nearly all of them. Or just read the initial post. Does it refer to the full product line of plastic kits, primer, accessories, paint, etc.? Is Finecast even mentioned?

1. Products made of a cheaper product sold for more.
2. No online sales outside of specific regions leaving areas of the world with vastly different pricing schemes.
3. Heavily enhanced and increased secrecy over upcoming products.
4. Large price increase of over 170 product lines, with increasing ranging from 1% to 25%.

It’s been a busy day for GW. I almost want to call it diabolical genius, but I can’t because of how soul-crushingly stupid it is.

I think he is referring to whether or not this price hike is a temporary thing to try and recoup any expenses for the switch from metal to resin and not referring to the actual Finecast models themselves?

To make life a little easier for all’a y’all – here is that document with everything no one cares about removed, leaving just the increases. I’ve added the percentage difference between the old US price and the new US price as well. Everything 20% or higher has been highlighted.

Seriously?

Okay, deep breath. GW does occasionally lower prices on certain items during their annual price adjustments. Never in the 20+ years I've been buying GW products has a price hike over so many items been "temporary" for a specified limited time. Things just don't work like that.

You're comparing US to Canadian, not US to new US. Tac squad isn't increasing.

Format on this could have been one hell of a lot easier to read.

Yeah, this format is hugely misleading and makes things look way worse than they actually are.

Seriously?

Okay, deep breath. GW does occasionally lower prices on certain items during their annual price adjustments. Never in the 20+ years I've been buying GW products has a price hike over so many items been "temporary" for a specified limited time. Things just don't work like that.

If you look at the nicely laid out spreadsheet that uses Excel at the link in my initial post it's much easier to read than the copy-paste shown farther down in the thread. The copy-paste provides some convenience, but if you really want to examine this thing carefully the Excel sheet is the best way to do so.

New LR prices are $66+sales tax = ~$70 in PA

FW Helios complete = $72
FW Promo complete = $76

New Whirlwind prices are $49+sales tax = $52

FW Whirlwind Hyperios complete = $46

* And yes it does NOT make sense we pay VAT when they ship to US...everyone else credits the VAT aganist shipping, FW just adds it on top!

Wut? I'm not sure of that. Don't know if I still have a ForgeWorld Invoice still laying around.

Just checked my previous orders online. They did not charge me VAT or shipping on either order (1 for 251 quid and the other for 256 quid.)

Please double check your invoices.

*also: I'm not an expert on UK law, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal to charge VAT to those outside of the empire. In fact, I know when one of my friends went to Scotland, he got a bunch of stuff from GW there and his VAT was refunded when he came back to the US.

How can they expect us to keep playing this game? I have a sneaking suspicion that GW is no longer seeking obscene profits but guising their sinking company with price hikes and grand releases and openings. If I had to guess, the company has been bailing from several years now and it's only just beginning to affect us. I just can't believe that in the entire company not one person took econ 101 or the very least understands that a there is a threshold at which your loyal customers will happily choose rent and dinner over bolters and chainswords. I guess that Dark Eldar army was just never meant to happen for me. Until their inevitable hostile take over, its casting for me.

Well the prices here in AUS are already ridiculous enough; $103 for a Landraider, $62 for a Tac Squad. Our dollar is on par with the US atm but it is not going to mean cheaper prices ever (in any retail store), which bugs me a lot! They just um and ah there explanation of why they charge what they do. If prices increase here it, I think quite a few will just call it quits seeing as we cant use Maelstrom etc. anymore.

Along the lines of what Fetterkey said: I'm kind of hoping that they will reign this in the only way they know how, by releasing new models. They can't admit that they're wrong (perish the thought) and lower the price on any one model, because people will QQ about how their favorite models didn't get a lower price. Therefore, the only way for them to combat their ridiculous prices is to release the new models at the lower prices. They can do that because that way A) New people to the hobby won't suffer sticker shock, and B) People who are looking to buy older models already have large armies, don't buy THAT much of the old stuff, and are committed to their army so they're gonna be willing to pay whatever.

It's ingenious, and kind of evil towards older gamers, but I really hope that this is the explanation, because if the next army comes out with the top end of these kinds of prices, that army, and GW, is gonna have a lot of problems in the cash department.

I know one thing for certain. If their prices were lower, I would buy much more. I know several gamers, if not everyone of them, that want 6 or 7 different armies and all are willing to spend money to get them. However, due to how expensive it already is and soon to be even more so, they buy 1 army and save for a decent period before they purchase more. I've got no problem supporting my LGS but this is getting silly. I honestly can't justify buying another army with these increasing prices. It may only be 5-15 extra per unit, but the price points make me feel like I'm just blowing money. In Illinois, a LR will run roughly $72.60. That's just stupid to me. Almost 100 bucks for a hunk of plastic. There are many other games out there that call to me. Fire Storm Armada sounds better every day.

Wait, $50 for 20 catachan... we're almost to the point where DKOK are as expensive to collect.

GW is a miniature company that needs to make a profit, yet somehow, in some way, a bunch of basement factories are putting out much cheaper product to fill niches already filled by GW models in their own damn game.

GW bunkers don't allow... lets say IG armies that are trenchers/WGF style krieg/maxmini commandos, but the FLGS commonly do. When its cheaper to buy Large Man In Bulky Sci Fi Armor from Joe's Basement, GW will start losing to itself, which completely ignores the market changes caused by privateer press and the other up and coming games (like Malifaux).

Who is working that marketing department? Where the hell did they go to school?

You know what I blame...

GOD DAMN LORD OF THE RINGS!

If it wasn't for that bloody trilogy GW might still be a decent company that didn't ride on the films success to become a PLC. Then the films died down and so did GWs profits. All these mental price hikes are trying to keep shareholders happy who were laughing all the way to the bank a few years ago with the LOTR boom. That bubble popped a long time ago and we are STILL paying the price. Will the Hobbit film help?

I've been trying to work out the cost too...

Design process = wages, materials, time etc
Making model = wages, materials, time again etc
Selling models = shop costs, electric, wages, shipping
Transporting models = fuel and wages

How much do they actually make when you take in to consideration the whole process? They obviously are using all of the above to justify increased costs. Do any of the posters on this forum know the exact profit they make per say "Box of Marines" ?

Change to "Nothing is seen until a week before release"?

What did the guys at GW smoke? Do they want people to expand into other systems?

Companies like Privateer Press are sure to have a field day with this.

When all of this has died down, it'll simply mean watching ones budget for GWs products a bit more, soucring more stuff from Ebay/3rd parties or being a little more selective in what one wants or more importantly needs.
Some of the hyperoble in this thread is reaching silly proportions.

Remember GW products are a luxury, someone mentioned rent and dinner over Gw models earlier. Please.

On average i think it works out as a 5% price increase by GW each year and a 5% drop in profit.

I'm not sure how kids can get into this hobby anymore. It's too expensive.

It appears they are trying to stealthily increase prices too re-released box sets are having their prices changed so give practicly no saving now for instance.

I'm not sure how a buisness keeps going from these levels of antipathy built up around it.

Everyone likes GW's stuff here but who actually likes GW?

Yes, someone did mention it earlier, but they included something you intentionally omitted, a little something we call "context". It's ironic to engage in hyperbole while denouncing it.

Yes, we're aware that our plastic men are a luxury item. There is a big difference between an affordable luxury (like getting a cup of Starbucks every day) and a non-affordable luxury (a Porsche). That line is in a different place for everyone, but the poster was indicating that for a large percentage of the target market, GWS has been slowly (and now, not so slowly) inching from the former to the latter.

LoTR just showed GW and investors its potential earning capabilities; you can't fault them for trying to live upto that, just for how they've gone about it.

More basic than that you can go to their investors website and see their annual pre-tax income and profits. Simply last year they brought in £126.5M in revenue... of which it costs GW £30.7M to physically manufacture all their products; over that cost GW marks-up 400%. All their other operating expenses account for £82.8M. They saw an after tax profit of £15M or about 11% overall profit. Of that profit £3M was from licensing. So really it takes GW £126.5M to make £12M profit or about 9.5%... if you spend $44 on a model kit at the end of the year GW only gets to keep $4.

It's probably not far off and a 10% profit isn't too bad for a company that still has a lot of physical stores as 'operating expenses account for £82.8M' which will be shops, staffing, and distribution. If people want GW to reduce prices them nuking some of their stores would be a good start, mind you that would mean GW letting independent retailers sell their product and take up the void left by the stores in some towns and they clearly don't like that much >.>

Considering the cost a retailer pays GW for most products is around 50% off the retail price (and decreases depending on how much of the range you stock), they've been operating on a pretty nice margin for their direct stores/website sales for quite a while now. I haven't seen any of the trade price sheets for the increase yet though, so I'll keep from commenting on what the new margin is. If I had to guess, it will stay about the same.

So I just did some fact checking into the subject. It's about $2000 to manufacture a TON (imperial not metric) of polystyrene at the moment. That is a $130 increase per ton since january and roughly the same to the previous two januaries. That means that there was an increase of roughly 13-15% over the past three years. They have in response to the rising cost by 50% of what it was in the same timeframe per boxed set and actually limiting what is included within each boxed set thus reducing its actual value. That isn't changing with the times, that's a suicidal business model.

EDIT: The above figure does not include the other operation costs involved in the production of miniatures, however with the reduced GW workforce and their increased movement towards less expensive molds and types of polystyrine/resin etc. that would seem to indicate an increase in the other operation costs for producing the models. This is especially true considering the GW relocation to a cheaper headquarters and so on.

They're doing a lot of things to hide the fact that the company is clearly and blatantly failing to adapt with the times but it is clearly and blatantly failing to adapt. I don't think it will ever go out of business but if it doesn't take its head out of its ass very soon it will discover that companies who are able to adapt and change to modern technologies and outside the box business practices will beat them every time.

The costs might make sense if they were compensating for maintaining a larger business model with the hope of expansion or maintaining their current marketshare. However it is abundantly clear that entire continents of the world are more or less being cut out of their business model. Moreover they are theoretically funding a substantially smaller number of physical investments and continued human capitol. They've cut back the number of physical locations worldwide nearly universally and cut back on their services almost entirely. Customer support has been reduced to little more than troubleshooting and their community building initiatives are constantly becoming less and less prominent. There are fewer tournaments run by GW, they don't last as long, they happen in fewer locations, and they are substantially more expensive for less perks (of course). They haven't had a significant increase in employee benefits nor have they had any substantial increase in employee pay. None of this leads logically to the absurd increases in price or reductions in service that we've witnessed in the past five years.

GW has been offsetting a failing business model by hiking costs, trying to undercut or sabotage their competition, slapping a lawsuit on anything that looks at them crosseyed, cutting all the services that initially helped them build a substantial customer support base and raising the price point beyond what anyone can reasonably sustain. It is working to conceal their major problems in the short run but anyone reading their financial reports can see major red flags in this company. Were this any other company selling any other product it would have gone bankrupt years ago, but as it hasn't had any real competition it's been able to circumvent that mostly. However with strong contenders like Privateer press or Malifaux its not looking good for games workshop.

GW is lucky enough to have a consumer base of fans who love its product enough to ignore its major faults but that can only carry it so far. I'm a fourteen year veteran of the hobby, more than half my life, and I simply cannot justify the continued cost of the hobby any more nor can I imagine that a new gamer of age 12-16 could do so either. If we are entering into an atmosphere wherein neither the veteran gamers nor the new gamers are able or willing to pay the cost of continuing/starting the hobby then who is left? Especially with substantially less expensive hobbies requiring less time and effort to master like video games or paintball cost some 500-1000 USD less to field an entire army.

Bad times ahead gentlemen, bad times ahead.

That is a bit deceptive to people who arent in the plastics business. I work in plastic injection molding. The cost you list is to manufacture the raw material, not a finished product made of that material. It costs far more than $2000 to produce a ton of finished Space Marine sprues. As a matter of fact, material cost can be one of the smaller expenses. For example, the electric bill alone for the factory I work in is over $25,000 (US) a month.

Wow. Not only did they up the price on the Battlewagon kit, but on the stinking upgrade sprue, too! It now costs $91 if I want to field an out-of-the-box kit with the most useful upgrade (Deffrolla). I didn't notice an increase on the Stompa, so it's a pretty narrow margin now between an Apocalypse unit and an out-of-the-box heavy vehicle. That's more than just a little bit silly.

I have most of the Ork units I was planning on purchasing to finish out my force, but I certainly am MUCH less likely to expand to a different army now (Sorry, Chaos!).

I picked up a box of Malifaux on a whim the other week... pretty nice looking models. The fact that I can have a full force for like $40 is pretty darn appealling. Of course, I haven't actually played the game yet...

While I don't subscribe to the commonly held view that GW are either stupid or mindlessly avaricious (after all, few internet commentators have more than a vague clue how their business actually works), these price hikes suggest that they are struggling. I don't believe that they'd do this without considerable hesitation - they must know they are going to become unaffordable to part of their target market - so they are presumably compelled to do it in order to increase their (relatively modest) profits and placate their shareholders. I'm sure rising costs are an issue - people underestimate the huge cost of transporting products - but their hikes seem disproportionate. Unlike some, I don't want them to fail, but I can't see how this is sustainable. I earn enough to buy their stuff without any hardship, but when the prices reach this level I'm increasingly unwilling to shell out for things I 'need' and far less likely to make casual purchases. Especially when, in addition to first class kits like the new DE models, they're selling a lot of quite old and fairly average kits for the same prices. Even a more selective approach to price increases might be more palatable. So this is fairly depressing, and takes the shine of the new DE releases. I suspect that, as usual, a lot of people who claim they're jumping ship will stay on board, but I think they risk losing substantial numbers of customers, loyal and otherwise, if they keep this up.

Well, I think I'm doing spending money on GW for this next year---regardless of releases. I have enough plastic and terrain projects in mind for quite some time---and after the recent management decisions, I simply can't bring myself to give them positive fiscal feedback.

If I have an absolute 'Must buy new plastic crack/new model' urge---I'll be throwing it at alternative miniature companies and/or Privateer Press. I try to steer clear of hyperbole---but what a disaster this last week has been for several 40k fans. I'm not angry---I'm mostly let down.

A few radicals aside, I don't believe that any of us want to see GW fail. I would be ok with a company take over that see's a significant reorganization and the throwing of people like Tom Kirby and Mark Wells in front of the 3:10 to Yuma. But, I don't want to see GW collapse.

That's easy to figure out:

Step 1: Find the USD$ price for the item in question.

Step 3: Curse GW for not letting us buy from Maelstrom any more.
Step 4: Find another miniature hobby.

Four easy steps to success!

Hi there, Just Dave. The Excel spreadsheet appears to be clearly for GW North America only, but that doesn't mean there isn't one for the UK we haven't seen yet. In fact, I'm sure there is one. I would be more than a little surprised if you don't have a price hike in the UK as well. Every annual price increase in recent memory has affected all GW markets, just not the same exact items necessarily in each market.

I don't have enough information to address your other questions, but if it's a hoax, it's an elaborate one that would turn out to be true even if it isn't. By that I mean to say that GW adjusts their prices annually at this time of year as a matter of SOP for the past several years and all the price adjustments shown on the spreadsheet, though alarming in some cases, fall within the realm of plausibility and expectation.

I'm just glad I own a lot of Land Raiders already, all of them purchased at considerably less than $66!

*sigh* Well I think I'm officially done buying GW stuff, with the exception of tournament winnings. Good thing my 2 armies are pretty much finished. I still love the gaming, but once my current stash of unpainted models are completed, my days in the 'hobby' portion of 40k will be over.

Aha! Cheers Brass, that's all I wanted to know really, would've liked to have known more 'definites' but I wasn't expecting them!

I too thought it would be far too elaborate to be a hoax, but I wanted to know the reliability anyway as the source/whatever hadn't been mentioned. I don't doubt it's accuracy mind, just I prefer to deal with facts as I'm sure you'd understand.

At least that Ven. Dread I've been hankering for hasn't gone up in price. Yet...

This is one of the most thoughtful, intelligent posts I have ever seen on this forum. Thank you for sharing these ideas and restoring my hope that there can be more to the online gaming community than the preponderance of irrational ranting that often takes up the lion's share of space on the forums.

I also second that. I also second, I am not angry, I am also let down. However, what more could some one do? How, other than not making any purchases, let games workshop know, it is unacceptable? Not that it would really matter, as much as it should.

In all honesty a lot of their products that don't even have to do with models aren't worth the price. Me and a friend were talking about WD for instance; when was the last time you ever saw them promoting or showing tutorials on how to make your very own unique terrain and not promoting the ever increasing price of their plastic moulds?
Or a how to build/paint section in the newest of codex releases. I think the Orcs and Goblins Codex was by far the most disappointing release for a army since the team up of Blood Angels and Necrons becoming BFF's. All joking aside, the quality of product is like mentioned before, just difficult to justify.

I don't see abandoning the hobby, but I most certainly will not enable them to take my wallet, and only the most necessary of purchases for my army to still function at a fun and competitive face value will be made.

I would also like to know.

I think the annual increases are getting ridiculous, if all the people here that mentioned dropping the GW hobby stick to their word, then I hope GW get the message.

I said I would refuse to buy from GW directly if they increased the price again, discount retailers and other companies here I come.

I believe they've traditionally staggered the price increases. US has been late May/Early June and then UK gets there's towards the end of the year if I remember correctly. Not sure if it's a fiscal year thing or something like that.

Funny story about that. Around 2 years ago, a guy on ebay was selling 3 seperate land raiders - 1 crusader, and two stock - and the bidding was low, like $35ish each. I really wanted one, so I bid $40 on each. I was I'd win at least one this way.

Sure enough, an hour later... I had won all 3 auctions.

I was pretty annoyed with myself at the time, but 2 years later.... feels good, man!

As far as I can tell, GW has three types of customer:

1. New Gamer. Doesn't play GW games, but has just wandered into a stall out of curiosity. Has no knowledge of the existence of competitor's products.

2. Young Gamer. Probably plays 40k or LoTR. Buys with disposable income sources from parents. Has no knowledge of the existence of competitor's products.

3. Veterans Gamer. Probably plays multiple systems and has for many years. Buys with own money. Knows of GW's competitors.

Type 1 customers go one of three ways:

1a. They come into a GW physical store, look around, decide its not for them, then walks out.
1b. They buy a starter set, maybe some other things. Play for a few weeks, get bored, don't come back.
1c. They buy a starter set, and evolve into Type 2 Gamers.

Type 2 can do two things.

2a. Play enough and buy enough products to be considered Type 3.
2b. Grow out of it, get bored, or something else, and leave the system.

Type 3 can also do two things.

3a. Keep buying, remain a Type 3 gamer.
3b. Become sufficiently disenfranchised to leave the system.

The fact is this. GW concentrates on conversion rates for Type 1 gamers. This is why they have demo games and quick-off-the-draw staff designed to make newcomers buy starter sets. Type 1 gamers buy big, then either leave or settle down into Type 2. Type 2 and 3 gamers are already in the system, so don't receive equal attention. The profitability of a Type 1 gamer successfully converted is much higher than retaining a Type 2 or 3.

Being on this website, we are all Type 3 gamers, who know other products exist, and we are vocal of our opinions. Sadly, GW doesn't care about us. They just want to convert Type 1s and milk Type 2s for as long as possible, and parade Type 3's armies on their website to masquerade as caring. This is why White Dwarf is just a paid-for advertising leaflet; it's about short term sales not long term retention. This is why they don't advertise at gaming events; you aren't their main source of profit.

Unfortunately for GW, their sales strategy seems all wrong. For a company that very obviously concentrates on getting new gamers, they don't advertise in external media, have a very high (and increasingly so) initial entry cost, and make no attempt to sell starter sets in other shops. All these price rises will eventually reach a critical point where Type 1 gamers are priced out of ever entering the system, type 2 gamers cannot afford products on their parent-funded allowances, and type 3 gamers simply migrate to GW's competitors. All this means is that GW revert to their short sited strategy of increase prices while decreasing quality. It hasn't reached the breaking point yet, but it is my feeling it very soon will.

My gaming club plays at GW's HQ. 3 years ago, if you didn't turn up on time, you'd be lucky to find a table. All 50 would be filled. Now we're lucky to be 1/3 full. Type 3s are a dying breed.

Well it looks like its time for GWs annual price hike.

I think that GW is being kept afloat by hardcore fans who buy multiple armies. Increases like this will make multiple armies a luxury that most people cannot afford. They will also turn away new customers who will baulk at the high prices.

Don't you mean Bi-annual? They have been doing a price hike twice a year now for awhile. Remember the ork battlewagon was $50.00 only a few years ago, now it will be $66.00.

One might think that and I certainly see evidence to support it, some of it very personal. But every conversation I've had with GW employees about this has turned to the idea they are fed at the company that the new customers in general far out-spend veterans. True or not, it's a fairly ingrained belief in GW upper management that is passed down the employee chain.

To a store level employee this may seem true because the veterans that play in their store actually know where to purchase the same product, at locations with better on hand inventory at a discount. With no 'customer rewards' type of system or any perk (besides maybe the use of their gaming tables) - most veterans I feel like to not support their local GW store financially.

I think in the short term that is certainly true. Someone just starting will spend more in that initial period. But the sales are generally one offs as people discover how truly expensive it is to play an average size game, or that their friends aren't interested. A number of factors come into play. I know that of the multiple friends that started the hobby around the same time as when I was getting back into it in 3rd edition, only 2 or 3 including myself stuck with it past the initial month or two, and that was on late 90s pricing. GW currently seems to only be interested in that initial sale, and doesn't look (from my vantage point, ymmv) to want to grow their business with a loyal consumer base.

But then why does GW raise the entry hurdle by 10-25% each year? 99$ for a starter and 33$ for the Codex targeted at teens? There is obviously a limit how much children can and will pay. Much cheaper to get a console and a game, no fuss with painting and finding an opponent (if they even know GW exists).

Post by: Lord of Deeds

Given how some items are increasing more (and in some cases much more) than others, tells me that the many of these increases are not reflective of increased costs, but are targeted based on some internal measurement of what GW believe the market will bear based on current sales and to a lesser extent the current meta game.

As I mentioned in another thread, through this move and others GW increases their margin on each box/blister sold, but as borne out in their financial reports, will not result in increased sales. Thus reports of increased revenue are misleading as it is the result of price increases, not increased sales, and their profits remain stagnant as though they make more margin on each sale, they sale less. This again is borne out in their most recent financial statement which despite trumpeting a larger profit than expected, most of the credit for the profit went to reduced expenses, not increased sales.

When many parts of their product offering started passing certain thresholds, which in the US are $20, $50, and $100, and looking over their financial reports the last several years, the erosion of the North American market seemed to only increase and accelerate. Thus one could see the pricing increases and rather draconian cost reductions (1 man stores anyone) as a sign of fighting a rearguard action create an illusion of increasing revenue.

Obviously no market can support double digit price increases other than health care, food, and gas, and for a business that is largely now focused on the younger gamer, their barriers of entry are very high. And no, the Hobbit movie release will not save them since GW will not benefit from a new movie every 12 to 16 months, nor does it have the open ended gaming possibilities that LoTR has which allowed GW to create a new core gaming system.

As for me personally, as has happened over the last 4 years, I will reduce the number of purchases, and will shift more purchases to on-line discounters to make up what I am losing due to price increase. If that means my local store closes, so be it.

It has been proven that it costs significantly more to create new customers than it does to keep loyal customers. I forget exact numbers, but the training material for one of my jobs quoted something like 5x to 10x more expensive to reach new customers than it is to keep a loyal customer. So even if a new player buys more, for the same cost you can keep 5-10 loyal customers who will likely spend more than that one new customer.

At first I tought it was just a matter of USD-Euro adjustment.

Prices increases of 3-5% wouldn't cause much aside a bit a grumbling. But 10-25% on most things? That's gak-bat insane. A lot of players don't start 40k because it already is very expensive.

This is just spitting on the client's face, as well as providing inroads to the competition. What a bunch of lemmings...

Re: Price Changes

I'm not going to say anything about the AUS issue, cause that's just weird, but I will put in my $0.02 about 'price increase rage'.

Yes, prices increase. I'm not sure if anyone hasn't been paying attention for the last 30 years, but GW isn't the only culprit of drastic price increases year after year.

If you don't realize that prices will continue to go up, year after year for all products (with few exceptions), you must be in a coma.

- I used to be able to get a GI Joes for less than a dollar. Year after year they have increased the price while production costs have gotten lower and materials cheaper. In this time the cost has increased almost 700% (toysrus Snake Eyes, $7.99)

- D&D and other RP books used to be less than $10 for modules and $10/15. Now they are in the range of $30-50 for the same type of materials.

- Edit: removed consumables.

So rage on and promise to boycott GW for raising prices but at least be consistent and do some research to find out all the other products you should start boycotting next.

I don't think anyone is doubting that prices can and do rise, least of all GW customers, who are used to annual price rises by now.

What we are concerned about is the rate and scale of price rises. It becomes less about adjusting prices for inflation and material cost and much more about milking the customer cash cow for all its worth.

Whilst I'm not necessarily debating your other points, when people comment on this is frustrates me. Things like gas, petrol, water & other consumables etc. have gone up in price. However, these things aren't a luxury like the GW hobby; they're fundamentals and not optional for the majority of people. It'd be like comparing apples and oranges and lets not...

Most of the products you've mentioned have a steady rate of inflation over a number of years matching what the rest of their industry went with. For example the action figures. I remember when they ran 2.99, then 3.99 became the standard, and 4.99, etc. It was not a yearly increase, but after a few years, the price would rise again, across multiple different lines. It's been a long time since an action figure was a dollar, so much so that I myself can't even remember despite being an avid toy collector since I was 10 years old. Not open and play with toys, but put them sealed in a protector and on a shelf/in a box type of collector. I don't think a rise from 1 to 8 dollars over a period of greater than 20 years is a stretch. If it was GW you're likely to see that sort of rise over a 3 year period, and that is what have people concerned/angry.

Even 2.99 to 7.99 is pretty beefy in 10-20 years.

3rd Ed Boxed Set (book, 10 Marines, 10 DE, Land Speeder and some Terrain/Templates) - $75.00 - 1998
5th Ed Boxed Set (Nobs/Orks/Koptas, Captain/Marines/Dread and book, terrain template) - $99.00 - 2011

That's not that bad. I'd like to see someone do an indepth comparison of prices now vs prices in 3rd edition (good baseline to compare) and compare that to overall inflation. According to the CPI Calculator*, the boxed set should be about $103.48 based on inflation.

I get what you're saying, and I don't really disagree with your points, but the $99.00 box set released less than three years ago at $60.00. $39.00 of "inflation" in 3 years is insane.

Edit - And before it's mentioned, I am aware that gas prices have risen as quickly. I think we can all stop with that particular argument as the price of a necessity and the price of a hobby are two completely different topics of discussion.

Most of the price rises quoted in this thread and others are over and above inflation. In the list of UK prices that reds8n posted, the rises were along the lines of 16% to 30% price hikes.

So really, they are at fault for underpricing their product and then correcting the price, under your argument. Since they dropped the price waaaay below what it was in 1998 based on inflation, with more minis in it and brought it back up now to what is more reasonable based on changes in the dollar.

In the short term. Compare prices over the long term. Just as I pointed out to derek, the price for the AOBR was well below inflation when they released it at $60.

Do a comparison of some of those models that reds8n posted versus their 1998 prices for similar/same model.

There is no indication that it was ever under priced, you're making an assumption that it was. By that same token, you could just as well make an assumption that any product is under priced. Battleforces have held a steady price for years, giving a generally good value for that price. Perhaps they were always under priced, and GW is just now realizing it? Is that really the argument you want to go with for why something has gained that big of an increase in such a short amount of time?

When people encourage buying AoBR/IoB over battleforces/standard boxes and "just trade off the faction you don't want"--there's two things that GW can possibly take from that.

1) The alternative sources of the units are overpriced from GW.
2) The starter sets are underpriced and aren't being used as starter sets, but as 'booster packs' for armies.

Because a third option "The normal units are overpriced and the starter sets are where we should be for pricing in terms of units" won't enter their heads.

I was saying it was underpriced compared to the 1998 price for a 3rd edition box set ($75), the 2008 value of $75 based on CPI is: $99.07. Hence a price point of $60 was underpriced compared to their previous offerings.

My problem isn't with the small dollar increases. I completely understand that increasing by a few dollars over time is okay and definitely need for a company survive. If they released new models and sculpts for everything the hiked the price more than 15-20% then I honestly would be okay with paying 25% more.

Hell, I checked out the new Scourges in the White Marsh, MD store on Sunday and FETH is the detail on those models amazing! And they are only $25?!

The problem is the $30 for 10 Guardsmen when 10 years ago you could get double that for $20. AND IT'S THE SAME CRAPPY MODEL!

If GW is gonna raise prices by 25% on a model it dang well be a new sculpt.

Your prices are ballpark, but... In 1999, which is when I think catachans were released, if they were $20 for 20. That would be a buck a piece. Inflation puts them at $1.35 a piece or $13.50 for 10 when adjusted for inflation, which would be a significant price increase (122%).
Again, if your prices are correct. That does seem to be quite a jump though. I think you'll find a lot of luxury items increased similar amounts though... Compare say the original starcraft versus the new one (similar date ranges, I believe). Still, 122% is hard to swallow and I think Catachans are a bit of an outlier here (especially since they are a so-so sculpt).

Don't worry, they'll be $30.00 by the time they release. GW has done it with every other price increase over the last five years. Advanced order goes up, price rise is announced, stuff that hasn't even been released is given the price rise as well.

That's not that bad. I'd like to see someone do an indepth comparison of prices now vs prices in 3rd edition (good baseline to compare) and compare that to overall inflation. According to the CPI Calculator*, the boxed set should be about $103.48 based on inflation.

Your figures for the 3rd Ed box set are a bit off,for one it contained 20 Dark Eldar and (at least in my area) sold for $50.00.

Hmm. I'd like to be able to find an MSRP for it. I may have to wait until I get home to look at the back of the box. I pulled that off of a google search and it may not be 100%. Still, the models quality/quantity have definitely improved in the started box, although the book was a big downgrade, so it is probably a wash for value.

I'll agree that the quality of the models improved,as did the quantity (to a lesser degree),but the price, and of this I'm certian as I was with a friend who purchased two 3rd Ed starter boxes upon their release (paid just over $100.00 for both),has increased by almost 100% in just over 10 years.
For that matter,I payed $60.00,brand new and off the shelf, for the AoBR starter box when it was released ,so it's seen a substatial mark up over the past few years.

Even though Greatswords, Bestigor and Tomb Guard hardly move at $41.25/box, notice that all the elite Fantasy troops are now being marked up to that same price point. You can forget about seeing any new armies with large blocks of elite "Special" troops, even from a discounter these are prohibitively costly to buy more than 10 or 20 (1 or 2 boxes) total.

And an awful lot of stuff is now 10 for $29 that was $22 then $24.75 not all that long ago. This is really going to add up for people buying any significant quantity at all.

20 models for $20 is a buck a piece. NOW we pay $2.90 for the exact same model. Three times as much. That's almost a 300% increase. I can understand the "unit" having an increase in prices by 300% if it is suddenly an amazing new sculpt that blows our minds away but a 300% increase on the same, unchanged, model is absurd. I can understand a 122% increase because of inflation or production cost increasing but not 300%.

Here's a bit of trivia for the defenders of price increases...

Commander Tycho was released in 2nd Edition circa 1996. IIRC he was under $10, around $8.99 CDN. He's $25 CDN now. That's a 277% increase over 15 or so years, or a 18.5% increase per year on average. This model has not changed since 2nd edition. The only change is that he's packaged with a 3rd Edition SM backpack instead of a 2nd Edition one.

Just before the wraithlord transitioned to plastic, he had gone from being $7.00 CDN back in the early 90's, to $45 CDN over about 15 or so years. That's a 642% increase. Granted, for your extra money, they changed the base from a square one to a LEGAL round one, included a second arm, changed the supplied backpack to include a gun mount in lieu of the old RT era shoulder mount and gave you more than one weapon. In the old days, you bought the one with the gun you wanted and the gun replaced an arm. You no longer got that cool shadow-warrior model that the old RT Eldar Dreadnoughts (re: Wraithlords) came with, and they discontinued the old small head dread, so I consider this kind of a wash... The body, legs and head didn't change since the RT days, and the arms, guns and shoulders didn't change from 2nd edition until 4th Ed.

I won't even get into the fact that you used to be able to buy 5 aspect warriors in a pack for $7.

Umm. I think you missed what I said. Basically, your math is off.

Okay, Let's say $10 for 10 in 1999. Right?
Inflation raises that to $13.50 in 2011.
122% increase is $30.00.

A 300% increase would be $54 (from the inflation adjusted price) or $40 from the original price.

Thanks for the numbers. The Wraithlord doesn't sound right, but Tycho definitely does. Those are definitely outside of inflation.

That being said, I would again point folks to other luxury gaming titles. Most RPG books have tripled in that time period, for example, which matches Tycho. I can't explain the Wraithlord though. lol that's just crazy.

semantics/pedantic arguments aside about comparisons to 10-20 years ago)

If you take the UK as an example then the price increases are very much OTT and way above inflationary pressures.

IF gw was going in line with inflation this year even @ its current exceptionally high rate (which it wasnt at last year or the year before with the price hikes) then the price of the minatures should not rise more than 4.5%

now I hear you say WHAT ABOUT FUEL/COSTS? Gw reduced alot of those costs but even if you factored that in the actual increase shouldnt be more than 6-7%

AND ontop of all that GW just switched to Resin which is a cheaper material and is using the same moulds for most of them (aside from the specials) that does not justify a price hike either.

AND again dont forget we have had above inflation price rises for 3 years in a row now :/

AND (lol) ontop of all that they charge a premium anyway!

I could go on/on/on with arguments/reasons but itd be a waste of energy >.<

Not to get too far off topic, but the thing that scares me the most is that the 6th edition of 40k is right around the corner. The changes that were made to Fantasy in 8th edition drastically increased the number of models that are needed in an army and also increased the 'standard' size game. This may be viewed as a form of price increase. I am afraid that similar changes may be in store for 40k as well. At this point I am not inclined to invest in 40k until 6th hits the streets.

You should fact check a bit more - unless you're implying that the newer books are over 30% flash.

1st Edition Player's Handbook: 128 pages
2nd Edition Player's Handbook: 246 pages
3rd Edition Player's Handbook: 302 pages
4th Edition Player's Handbook: 320 pages

But I digress - certain things haven't changed much in price. Tank kits are a good example. On average, they were horribly overpriced to begin with. IIRC, when I first started in 2nd edition, the Leman Russ was $45. A jump to $60 is only a change of 33% or around 2% each year for 15 years.

Have you actually read the 1st ed player's handbook vs 4th ed player's handbook? Just typeface alone accounts for a good chunk of that. A good chunk of the 4th ed book is fluff (I'd say more than 1st) and there are more of the 'refinements' (title pages, full page pictures, etc) that were more rare in 1st edition. I'm not saying that things haven't changed/improved since then, but page count is not an accurate picture of value. Compare the 4th ed DMG vs 1st ed DMG. MUCH more crunch in the 1st ed than the 4th ed.

"trys to think of a long term example"

problem is I could come up with a few products which have increased drastically (like characters/individual metals) but like the comparison with boxsets it will give a skewed view but just from the opposite side of the coin which is no help either :(

When it comes to GW's hiking its the general trend and overall % that I try to look at, as that presents really how horrible it is (in my opinion)

its just not good.. it really is displeasing to put it mildly.

to take a luxury item comparison. A computer game even say 15 years ago was around the £40 when first released, that price has not altered much infact for many it has gone down. Problem is with such an example is a different kettle of fish.

With GW you can only compare it to competitiors and to itself.

Why the staunch defense of the price increase? Does it make it hurt less to think, "Well, it's actually in-line with other luxury item increases."? Who cares? It doesn't make the $4.00 reappear in my wallet if I buy a Land Raider. It doesn't make me feel better that Falcons got an $8.00 increase in their price to know that maybe they were undercosted before.

What it does is make me want to put my armies on eBay. And not because I need more stuff for them. I actually don't. I don't even need to buy anything to be affected by these increases. I don't want to support GW any longer. This just may be the final straw. It is a culmination of different things; they're making it tougher for new players to get into the game, I don't really enjoy the fluff anymore with Matt Ward at the helm, the rules are coming out half-baked (why do we need a FAQ before a Codex has even hit the shelves?), the thought of an embargo and the customer support is lacking. Now, on top of that, I still support them. I buy new things, I paint them up and I play with them. But there were always issues lingering. Now, you make those issues more expensive and a critical mass is reached.

That's what is going on with me, anyway. I don't need to buy a single thing - but I don't want to have anything to do with this company anymore.

That's cool. It is your opinion. Just don't think that you are doing it because GW is some evil corporation that does things so differently from every other company and product you buy. Prices go up. Companies don't have the best CS or communication. Story arcs change. Internet raging over it doesn't change that.

Do what makes you happy though.

Well, I don't understand it. Granted, my economics education is limited to undergrad courses----but my gut tells me they're starting to reach the curve. I consider Games Workshop a luxury hobby----and unlike beer/smokes---people will spend less during economic down turns.

With wage stagnation v. cost of living v. the niche market GW represents----I would assume raising prices would be bad business. I'm sure there is someone with a Masters in Economics staring at a PED telling me I'm wrong---guess time will tell....

No, I don't. What I do is weigh how important that new Land Raider is to me. At $62 it was pushing it. At $66 it is not important at all. Then, all of a sudden, the rules to the game change and you really, really want that Land Raider for your army. Just insert the necessary unit into this example. Maybe you needed 20 Wyches to finish out your army. You could stomach $49.50. $58.00 is pushing it. This is what I'm talking about. For me, they've priced themselves out of what I'm comfortable spending on something. It is not because they're evil or anything. It is because I don't agree with their business practices and that, coupled with the other things I listed, is enough to make me want to finally turn away from them.

Fair enough. Evil was shorthand for 'they don't do the things I like and I don't agree with their decisions'. Which, if you look at it, is probably true of most corporations and other businesses that you deal with on a regular basis, you just don't hang out on tacotaco.com.

Had this in another thread here.

So, taking a look at some of the financial reports, it looks like it backs up what many folks here have been spouting off about.

We ARE - in fact - buying less GW than we used to.

Taking a look at their 2010 financials, they report revenues of 126.5 million GBP.

Going back to 2006, they reported 115.2 million GBP.

Than an increase of about 9% (rounding up for conservatism).

Inflation is listed in the US at about 3% per year. Once again, let's be conservative and say about 2.5%. Over 4 years (2006-2010), that would predict an inflationary increase of 10%, assuming sales volume remained stable.

However, GW is seeing only a 9% increase - which add up when we're discussing 100+ million GBP.

Additionally, I do not have the price list from 2006 to compare to, but even last years price increase was considerably more than 3%.

Assuming that there had been NO OTHER price increases since 2006 (obviously not true, but once again, being conservative), then the sales VOLUME has obviously dropped.

Since there have been price increases - and not insignificant ones - it is safe to say we as consumers are not purchasing the same quantity of miniatures that we used to.

-------------------------------------------------------------

And going back a year further (the 2006 financials finally loaded) makes it even grimmer.

In 2005, GW reported income of 136.6 million GBP. So fast forward to the present, they are now bringing in less revenue before accounting for inflation. Or their price increases. I realize that we are in a recession that we are just now recovering from, but a 19% DECREASE (including 2.5% estimated inflation annually) in revenue? That is a sad story told on these reports...

Once again, that's a decrease in constant dollars. The decrease in units sold would be far higher. If anyone HAS an old price list from 2005 or 2006, I would really be interested to get some hard numbers on that. Thanks in advance to some kind soul who can hook a brother up.

**WARNING** Everything I post hereafter is merely speculation through observation and some guesswork. I have absolutely no knowledge of how GW operate or on what grounds they make their business decisions. I am merely using what knowledge I have as a business graduate and applying it to an organisation I have no affiliation/involvement with whatsoever. Everything posted here is entirely of my own opinion without any factual backing whatsoever.**/WARNING**

I've had a sneaking suspicion that GW operate their business on a 3-month cycle purely to coincide with the next release of their quarterly financial report. Not only does this make their entire strategy incredibly biased towards short-term gain over healthy long-term growth, but it causes them to make rash, sweeping and generally ill-conceived ventures that serve to make figures look far more impressive than they actually are.

So GW recently announced a return to the profit margins that they once enjoyed, after a sudden, and rather unexpected drop. To offset this, GW sacked loads of staff, closed lots of stores, and reduced those stores that *did* survive to one-man operations. This was OK, a bit ham-fisted, but they definitely reduced their overall operating expenditure and then repackaged this saving, whether through creative accounting or otherwise, as a 'return to profit' despite not actually making anymore sales. Essentially they told their shareholders that they made money, when in fact they had SAVED money instead.

Now, any organisation interested in long-term development would utilise the savings they'd accrued and invest it back into R&D or product development or raw materials or whatever. What did GW do? They offered an INCREASE in dividends to their shareholders! Yep, they used the money they had saved to pay their investors. So the investors go home happy (incl. Kirby who, last time I checked owns ~6% of GW) and GW corporate breathe a sigh of relief. However, you can only cut costs so much, and once that particular stream runs dry you need to look for alternatives, hence the price increase and the embargo we are seeing at the moment, which should (they assume/hope) tie them over until Q3.

'Fudging' company growth like this is incredibly bad business, as it puts no strategy in place for the long term. The only conclusion I can draw from this is there is no, nor was there any intention of having, an executable 2-3 year strategy. I have a sneaking suspicion that dividends will *again* be paid out and then Kirby will retire, get a nice payoff, and the whole organisation will crumble to dust due to the complete inability of the board to look beyond the short-term and instead compile an effective, dynamic and organic long-term release strategy.

TL;DR GW are buggered.

Found a few examples in some old threads online...

2005 - Space Marine Commander was 8GBP.

Now - 13.80 GBP

Increase = 72.5% in five years. Or about 11% per year, compounded.

11% WAY bigger than 3% for inflation.

Combat Squads - 15.50 now, 10.00 in 2005. 55% increase in 5 years. A bit bigger than the 10% for inflation. Or even assuming a 5% inflation rate, it's still more!

I'm really surprised no one has done this, actually. I don't believe GW has invented any of their plastic-mold technology, have they? Or even the computerized sculpting techniques they use to make it easy to separate into workable sprue components.

So go for it! I think this would be the time to invest.

This might sound really dumb but does this apply to the uk aswell. I am asking because gw is based in notingham and i would have thought all of this stuff would have been in British Sterling. Compared to some other hobbies i still think this is reasonable (Horse riding cost like a thousand pound a month fo stables, food and getting the horse around (which annoys me more because i show up places about 10 miniutes late so someone can have a hobby)). I think I might start buying of mwg.uk and stuff like that more often though.

I found a good way to save money on books though, if you go to a gw when a tone of new books comes out somtimes they try and sell as many of the old books as they can. I got 5 books for 5 pound last weekend: Sabbat worlds, Throne of lies, Fallen angels, Path of the warrior and Firedrake (some of the older books i admit)

Anthem against price hikes.

GW why do you hate us so? Why do you forget that you’re only making plastic models? That you own the intellectual content, so it’s not like you passing on the licensing fee of some existing design onto the purchasers of said model….except you are. You model the marines and charge us for that, and then you charge us for the concept of the model and the story behind it…..don’t you? Don’t you?

Other plastic manufacturers (think, Italeri, Tamiya, Bandai, Monogram, and Hasegawa) have had the keys to quality control for a long long time, but I can still get their models 10 years later for reasonable prices. Why is your idea, GW, of reasonable 10-20% more every year? Why? And while I don’t mind doing this for new stuff, realize GW that I am an elephant, and I remember buying that $50 tank for $30 12 years ago. And while plastic is better than pewter, plastic is not platinum.

Don’t you know that all you’re doing is making me not shop at your online store? You’re forcing me off to Ebay and Amazon and Warstore and bartering and trading….away from you GW, and away from my FLGS too. You’re making me buy bits because sprues and boxes are too expensive, especially in a recession. Maybe for the extra money your asking from me you should give me extra quantity, or extra quality, or new designs. Maybe if you can’t provide me one of the those three, that model should stay the same price.

You strike me GW.While I remorse I will not buy that new army. Nor can I waylay prospective players with tales of your awesomeness. Your old stuff that you concepted years and years ago should not cost me as much as it does. Don't lie, you've got a great big warehouse with old kits and blisters just waiting to go out. Don't pull this new year, new price on your loyal retainers. Neither plastic or pewter have gone up in price over the years to the degree you would suggest with your prices.

Don't be dicks GW. Don't be dicks.

I getz all ranty every time GW does this. Old kits shouldn't cost new prices.

One problem these days is that CEOs get a "golden parachute" of millions of dollars (or in this case, pounds) whether or not the company does well, does poorly, or tanks completely. The CEO can keep raising prices to enrich the stock holders including himself till people stop buying the product and the over-inflated prices potentially run the company out of business. Then, in doing so he will still get millions of pounds in severance when he is asked to resign. It's win-win for him, not so much for the rest of the employees and the customers.

You should fact check a bit more - unless you're implying that the newer books are over 30% flash.

1st Edition Player's Handbook: 128 pages
2nd Edition Player's Handbook: 246 pages
3rd Edition Player's Handbook: 302 pages
4th Edition Player's Handbook: 320 pages

Have you actually read the 1st ed player's handbook vs 4th ed player's handbook? Just typeface alone accounts for a good chunk of that. A good chunk of the 4th ed book is fluff (I'd say more than 1st) and there are more of the 'refinements' (title pages, full page pictures, etc) that were more rare in 1st edition. I'm not saying that things haven't changed/improved since then, but page count is not an accurate picture of value. Compare the 4th ed DMG vs 1st ed DMG. MUCH more crunch in the 1st ed than the 4th ed.

I must agree. I've played D&D for almost thirty years now. The original AD&D books were jam packed with game information; to the point that some of the rules or tables they offered were hilariously unnecessary. But it was nice to have to maybe at least give some ideas to newer DMs and players. I can say with pretty good authority that the first edition AD&D books contained more information in fewer pages than any later editions.

I've been considering for a while now to build a fantasy army for my next project. There has been a small resurgence of fantasy play at one of my FLGS's lately. It seems people are leaving PP games and playing more 40k/fantasy. I don't know if that will change now with the increases. I don't see myself building a fantasy army now though. I may give Kings of War a try. I'm sure I can convince a few friends to invest a modest amount of money (about $150) into a new game and army. My last GW purchases for as long as I can tell will be the new DE kits that are out this month.

Well, if it's any good for confirmation, I've been talking with a store owner in Canada about the price increases, so they have definitely been sent out, effective May 28th.

And going on the "defense" of the price increases, this is my favorite increase so far:

978184154996 94-01-60 60030217001 WARHAMMER: TOMB KINGS (ENGLISH) $37.25 $44.75 $41.25 PRICE CHANGE $49.50 PRICE CHANGE

So, a book that was just released on the 7th of May, at $44.75 Canadian, suddenly needs a $4.75 raise in price to $49.50 only 3 weeks later? Really?
I see they also tagged the Orcs & Goblins Hardcover for the same increase too, which means that just under $50 will be the standard Warhammer Armies book price from here on in...

The way I see it, I need one more item to flesh out one of my Fantasy forces (and even then, I'm not sure I can justify getting it), and then I am moving even more into Malifaux, Infinity, Dystopian Wars, Uncharted Seas, etc... after buying GW product since 1988.

I've been buying GW products for about 20 years. Over that time prices have always crept up on many items each year, but the increases used to do just that: creep. It used to be that items went up a dollar here, $2 there each year. The percentage increases the past few years coupled with the frequency has got every fan and hobby vet I know thinking twice about what and how much they will be buying from now on.

*Sigh*

Lucky for me, I have more Tyranids than I know what to do with and a Vampire Counts army can be made with other (cheaper) models, so I won't be that adversely affected by this...

But...

This is silly. GW is alienating everyone. The little kids that get maybe $5 - $10 dollars a week in allowance, the teenage kid that makes just slightly above minimum wage, and the adults that make a livable, but not luxurious, wage. This used to be a hobby for people to relax, buy a box of models, paint, and game in their off-time. Now GW's making it little more than a shiny wallet-drain.

GW needs to shape up or they're going to end up like Rackham.

Incorrect. VAT is inclusive of FW prices. It's not illegal to charge for VAT to non-EU customers. The only thing UK law demands is FW send the VAT revenue to their tax collection for EU customers...anything else they collect is theirs. It's why many other UK mini companies offer 'free shipping' or credit to shipping.

And yes, if you go to the UK and have spent enough, you can ask for refund when leaving the country. You can also ask for a refund by mail, but the threshold is much higher. You als ohave to prove you were charged VAT.

We get charged an extra 18% - which is why FW loves US...its doubles or triples their profit margin on each model. Its FW's way of ensuring price parity.

Okay, I just had a thought, and you all can jump all over me but I just want to make it clear that I am by no means a GW apologist. However, I have a thought.

What if this new material that they are supposed to be using for their models ushers in a new age of not having to spend hours shaving moldlines or filling gaps. Maybe this new casting material really is good stuff. Despite how high the prices are to begin with, if it is possible that this stuff is going to increase the quality of the product, then I might just be willing to pay a few extra dollars for that vast shift in product quality. This by no means justifies $41 for an army book, nor any of the price increases, for that matter (after all, plenty of companies have better casting quality than GW for much lower prices *cough* PP *cough*).

I don't know, it's just a thought that popped into my head. Maybe they think that an increase in quality will somehow shadow the price hike. It doesn't (not completely anyways), but it does shift the feeling of the pricehike from a sour to somewhat bittersweet taste (at least for me).

First, there's another thread for discussing Finecast, this is about price changes. Please go here to discuss Finecast: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/369106.page

Second, the current metal range is now minuscule in size compared to the multi-part plastic kits, so the successor Finecast range is also relatively small compared to the overall product line and is mostly character/hero type models, not troops/squads/units, so it's not going to make up a significant part of anyone's army building process for better or worse.

I don't think "no mould lines" is a valid reason for why all the Codices and Army Books are going up in price.

I do not have a beef with the price increase. Current predictions are most good prices will rise by 5%+ in the upcoming year, which is an abnormal rise above inflation.

So another GW rise is expected and, if it follows everything else, be 'higher' than normal.

It's the total cost of models now. A standard troop box seems to priced at $30-$33. I get, do not like, but 'get' the price with the newer, more detailed, more bitz, etc. boxes...but the older, less detailed, less bitz, etc. boxes? That feels wrong and non-valuable.

I sincerely can not understand why they'd raise the prices on Khorne Berserkers and the old Catachans of all things. There is literally no way they haven't recouped the cost of the moulds by now. Also, I love how the Space Marine combat squad, the worst value in recent GW history, actually got more expensive while Tactical Squad boxes remained the same.

Oh well, not like I didn't have plenty of stuff to paint anyway.

I'm with Salvage.

I've tried to search the document for Dark Eldar Clawed Fiend, or any of those words, and I don't think it's there. Are there some metal blisters there but not others?

I've ordered mine, so it's not a problem, I just don't see "everything" listed... i.e. there's cracks between what's listed, and what's on the "Resin FineCast" list, and it's a lot of metal blisters.

I'm seriously done with this. I have three armies, and was happily considering adding an Ork army on top. Now, I'm going to buy off some excess stock from my FLGS to finish my Eldar and then I'm DONE. If I need a painting fix, I will buy Warmachine or some other system. Games Workshop is out of control. One reason I have always felt comfortable paying GW prices is because they are the largest and most stable gaming company, with the largest market share and whatnot. Now, I'm not at all confident in their ability to maintain their market share or profitability, and 40k fails when GW does.
It seems clear to me (having taken ONE economics class) that GW is far underestimating the price elasticity of demand of their product. They seem to think that the decrease in sales from a price increase will always be outweighed by the increase in revenue. This isn't true; every demand curve has both elastic and inelastic segments. I believe (from what I know personally, from what I've heard, and from what I've read here) that GW is now in the elastic segment of their demand curve: they will experience a revenue decrease with price increases. Since many of their cost are not per unit (ex. paying sculptors, buying molds), it makes more sense for GW to try and sell more models, as the increase in revenue will not be dampened by an increase in total costs as much as would be expected because per-unit cost are falling (possibly could be called economies of scale).
Their failure as business-owners is threatening their market share. I eagerly await the day my FLGS begins to stock Warmachine and Hordes.

I'm flabbergasted at all the recent news. I didn't even start that long ago and some things bought at a discount site now, cost as much as retail did back then.

Seriously I love the GW settings, I don't want to leave them, but GW just keeps making more and more crazy decisions. Even the the settings I so love are deteriorating with new books.

So guys, which game system should I move to?

Are you more 40k or WHFB or don't give a damn?

Mantic Games is a place I'm heavily considering moving over to with Kings of War. Massive battles with a company that listens to its customers, has awesome looking models at true scale, AND has boxes that cost less than a battleforce but has more, 12 page ruleset, free rules? Sign me up!

Look around here: http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home.html

Actually I have the KoW starter box in my closet, assembled everything, but haven't really got around to playing it much. The models are nice enough, but they do push the sameness even farther than WFB. Which is hard for me, because I have a hard enough time painting a unit where I pose EVERYTHING differently, much less a unit that's mostly the same.

Still, I've been keeping a watch on Mantic and hope they'll convince me eventually. I hope they push the setting farther.

Seeing that "the demand is totally out of control", to quote a PP Community Coordinator, you´re certainly not.

Only real problem with WarmaHordes right now is that, due to the growing demand, PP is having problems actually manufacturing enough models to meet the demand. Depending on where you are you could have problems finding certain models. I´ve been waiting for a unit of Druids of Orboros for close to three months now (pretty much as long as I play), but my FLGS just doesn´t get them even though they were especially ordered.

In the end it only means that you might have to look in a few other places until you find something.

I was talking to the owner of my FLGS, and it sounds like the price increases in Canada are far less inclusive than the increases in the USA. It looks like almost none of the plastic kits are increasing in price here. Because our dollar is worth more than the American dollar, rather than lowering our prices to match USA, they have decided it is more prudent to bring USA prices up to what Canadians pay.

Scratch one thing off the list of products that are 20% more expensive in Canada even though our dollar is worth more...

That's certainly a good thing even for those who don't play WH/H. GW is lacking serious competition, that's why they're taking their customers for fools that will swallow any price, instead of customers.

Yeah i'm a UK customer looking at warmachine/hordes as an alternative. Just wanted to point out too, for people in the UK that are having a hard time getting models from PP, you can have quite a bit of success shopping on ebay and other stores on the web, as the stock is there rather than waiting on PP production. It also helps out PP as it reduces their work load, so shop around the stuffs out there

I think as soon as I'm done with the Dark Eldar I'm done, too. I've got enough expensive hobbies and it's about time for one of them to go anyway. I can use the money I save to buy into Infinity like I've been wanting to.

It's hard to believe that barely five years ago a codex was $20. If I had any idea this was the kind of insanity I was going to have to put up with back then I wouldn't have even bothered getting into 40k at all.

I know why they're putting all these prices up!

They're generating revenue to re-release every Specialist Game! My Campaign to Free Warhammer Quest must be working! Thanks Tom

Seriously you guys should read that report, and all the others, to gain a better understanding of it from their point of view. Their pursuit of high quality (full colour hardback armies books, investment in better tooling etc) as well as their continued plans for expansion around the globe, will necessitate such price increases within any similar company, no one should be surprised - how far they can get away with such increases or if they expand too far, too quickly should be a concern to them - but I'm sure they know that & some of you have clearly made up your minds

For those who can't be bothered to read the report I'll leave some choice quotes that you can comment upon as you wish:

Our continual investment in product quality, using our defendable intellectual property, provides us with a considerable barrier to entry for potential
competitors: it is our Fortress Wall. While our 382 Hobby centres which show customers how to collect, paint and play with our miniatures and games
provide another barrier to entry: our Fortress Moat. We have been building our Fortress Wall and Moat for many years and the competitive advantage they
provide gives us confidence in our ability to grow profitably in the future.

The more fun and enjoyable we make our games, the more customers we attract and retain, and the more miniatures our customers want to buy. This in turn
allows us to reinvest in making more and more exciting miniatures and games, which creates a virtuous circle for all.

Listen to him! You should buy more stuff now so I get a new Warhammer Quest! You know you want to really

The products we make for our customers are the best in the wargaming world. This is because everyone at Games Workshop is passionate about our Hobby.
Every year we seek new and better ways of making our products and improving the quality. This is not simply a personal obsession; it also makes good
business sense. We know that, for a niche like ours, people who are interested in collecting fantasy miniatures will choose the best quality and be prepared
to pay what they are worth.

Waste management
Applying the principle of “reduce, reuse, recycle” we have reduced the amount of silicone waste from our resin process through
continuous process improvements whilst increasing the life cycle of the mould. Waste resin is now reground and added as filler into
the resin manufacturing process.
We are now achieving our zero landfill target from waste produced at our Nottingham HQ. We recycled 73% of our waste (by
weight). The other 27% of our waste is sent for recovery at the Nottingham City Council incinerator. This has significantly reduced
the transportation of waste and provided heating and electricity to public buildings in Nottingham City centre.

At least they recycle guys, c'mon

Also, when i read the "At least GW recycles", I instantly thought of the King of the Hill scene with "Now that's a clean-burning hell!"

When I started buying Citadel miniatures a standard infantry (character) figure was 25p. That compared with historical figures which were 20p.

Here are the prices as they should be assuming constant inflation rates for 30 years.

2% = 45p
2.5% = 52.5p
3% = 61p
4% = 81p
5% = 108p

On average an infantry figure should probably cost about 60-70p by now, thanks to inflation.

The cheapest GW infantry figures now are about 108p, being the snapfit Termagants in boxes of five. most troops though are more expensive

Most historical figures from other companies are in the range of £1.10 to £1.50 (Essex, Copplestone, Wargames Foundry). The new plastic ranges (Perry Brothers) are much cheaper.

Over-inflation price rises are a reflection of several factors, such as over-inflation pay rises (good news for most people). The extra money has been invested in better sculpts and wider ranges of models, so really it's all good.

The problem with GW is that you can't build an army just of relatively cheap troops, and the characters, elites and vehicles are a lot more expensive.

The problem with GW is that you can't build an army just of relatively cheap troops, and the characters, elites and vehicles are a lot more expensive.
Another scary thing about that is it wasn't always true. When GW first introduced the "Squad In A Box/Regiment In A Box" idea in the late 1990s, around 1997 if I recall, the marketing idea behind it was to make building an army of core troops easy and affordable and it was. Originally those boxes contained 12 to 20 models and were about $20. The Fantasy Regiment boxes had metal command model upgrade bits and a movement tray included! The original Catachan box of 20 models when it was released in 1999 was about $25. They thought that by making core army building affordable it would bring a lot of people to the hobby and that when they built those large core armies with huge numbers of core troops they'd then spend premium dollars on the "elite" units for their armies. And it seemed to work, the hobby started to grow a lot during that period. Things have changed a lot since then.

Boxed squad/regiment kits of course began to creep up in price over time, but nothing like we've seen the past two to three years. GW has clearly decided during this recent period to try and maximize profits by pushing price limits as far as possible on those same core troops they used to market as convenient and affordable. Most basic troop models for either Warhammer game will cost $2.90 US each after May 28. The really ominous thing about that is, where will it go from there next year or the year after that? They really may have hit the outer limit of acceptability and blasted right through it for even the most devoted customers this time.

You know, this really has done it for me. The last price hike I said it was getting ridiculous and I was only ever going to order from Neal at the Warstore. Now the prices rise again and my discount is up to where I said I wouldn't pay during the last price hike! So, I keep my promises.

I've got a small Khador army and I enjoy Warmachine. Infinity looks cool and Malifaux seems really interesting. None of those games force me to buy a crap ton of models just to play a decent game, and Warmahordes just released the Unbound rules for free in case I ever did want to.

I enjoy 40K and have been a supporter of GW for over ten years now. I have every incarnation of the 40K rule book. I don't have huge armies to begin with; about 1500 pts of vanilla Marines, 2000 pts of Tau, a decent amount of Sisters of Battle. My friend has a good 1500 pts of Imperial Guard. My nearest store to play at is over an hour away so I have only really ever played my friend in battle. So, I'm looking at home-brewing rules for our of version of 40K mixing 5th edition with 2nd and Necromunda to create a really interesting game that won't go above 1000 pt battles. Between that and all the other game systems it will keep me happy.

I like GW and I think their models are amazing. But the company has been on a downward slide, in my opinion, for a while. The current state of White Dwarf is abysmal. No Quarter makes me weep thinking of what WD used to be like. Prices are insane and I don't know how they expect kids to get into this hobby. I'm almost thirty and I don't have the kind of discretionary income needed to start all the armies I'd like, or even keep me going in the game as it is now, because I know these tactics GW employs as a company will never change. So, they have lost a once loyal customer.

Sorry but warmachine isnt much cheaper.

my Legion army cost me $360 for my 2 casters to be able to do a 35 pt tourney if i need.

and i have.. around 25-28 models for that cost...

My blood angel army retail would be around $550..

and it has 57 models.

That and conversions arent really allowed to much in Warmachine.. and no counts as neat looking custom armies.

New battle engies are a nice... $85 each.

Enjoy your warmahordes!

WarmaHordes had a single across the board price increase in 5 years. Plus, people in South America and Australia/ New Zealand can still order WarmaHordes models online from retailers and aren't essentially banned from doing so. PP released army books consistantly, and they are errata'd and faq'd immediately, and frequently, with customer feedback. Should I keep going as to why GW should not even be considered a hobby company anymore when compared to companies like PP?

PP is what GW used to be in the mid to late 90's. A company who gave a s**t about it's hobbyists.

alot of people dont tend to play 35 points though unless theyve been playing for a while or like you play in the tournament circuit.

also the start up cost is MUCH lower.

Alot of people tend to play 15-20 point games where I am and only go up later to maybe 25-30 points for tournies.

To do a 15 point game you need A starterbox and usually one miniature.

In the uk that cost is £40.

that provides you with rules, stat cards and miniatures to play.

even though PP models are as expensive as GW I at least dont need £150-200 to make a basic level army/rules for it.

my Legion army cost me $360 for my 2 casters to be able to do a 35 pt tourney if i need.

and i have.. around 25-28 models for that cost...

My blood angel army retail would be around $550..

and it has 57 models.

That and conversions arent really allowed to much in Warmachine.. and no counts as neat looking custom armies.

New battle engies are a nice... $85 each.

Enjoy your warmahordes!

Warmahordes is much cheaper to start than 40k/Fantasy. But as you expand your army the cost adds up.

Hi everyone,

Well, we can see that there are quite a few of you with strong feelings about several issues, and the threads have gone a little crazy. We’re sorry many of you feel frustrated. We have read all of your comments and because we (the web dudes) don’t have the power to act on any of them, be assured that we have passed your comments on to the higher levels of management in GW.

We want to continue posting pictures of your fantastic miniatures, and link to hobby related items. We would like future threads to remain relevant to the topic in question, so everyone else can have their voice heard and enjoy the discussions about the hobby we all love.

We’ve got your comments both in this thread and on those older posts, which will remain open for you to carry on the conversation there – please, feel absolutely free to do so, we will indeed read them. But in any new threads, we want to celebrate the creative efforts of others. Any comments that stray off topic will be removed.

Just remember that we must remove any strong language and abusive users, in consideration of our youngest fans.

The web team.

Yet MtG seems to be doing fine, and on these forums, lots of people gush how much better WotC is doing it than GW.

Funny.

Gone worse? You mean the prices of singles?

Almost everything began to go wrong with MtG at around Mirage:
-card design
-expansion design
-release schedule
-art

We all ragequit over the crap, but the game and the company seems to be doing fine, so I guess the lesson is that we are irrelevant.

I think they also forgot that they are removing any posts that suggest switching to a cheaper alternative. My posting was neither abusive or nor did it contain inappropriate language.

As to WM/H cost: I don't get an 10-20% eff you very much present from them every year like GW tries to give me. Prices have remained consistent, including the buy in cost from the time I first tried the game, with starter price having only increased, I believe 5.00 since 2003 (I want to say the first Khador starter I bought was $45.00 as opposed to the $50.00 retail tag today). If the local league/tournament schedule didn't conflict with mine, I'd be strongly tempted to start the game again.

Kilkrazy wrote:When I started buying Citadel miniatures a standard infantry (character) figure was 25p.

It should be noted, though, that released inflation figures are pretty much garbage these days. Calculation methods have been changed numerous times over the years, to always lower the "official" inflation so that people feel better. If, for example, US inflation was measured in same way today than in the '70s, inflation would be around 10%.

Nearly early hobby I've been involved with, the costs have risen faster than CPI.

Dear GW,

"Though all the rules do not apply
And mine is not to reason why
Gone, gone, gone

To all this grand old scheme of things
To all the pain it brings
To all those who pull the strings
I bid good riddance"

I noted that in my post, and provided a range of inflation figures to allow people to compare the effects of higher or lower than 'official' inflation.

The answer is "yes they have". Some items have gone down over the years, many different items at many different times. While prices overall increase on the product line each year, for the record GW has lowered the prices on a variety of items at many different times in their history, both existing items and revised new versions of older items.

Are you kidding me.... I'm speechless. I'm absolutely dumbfounded.

I simply cannot afford to pay 40$ for a rhino. I cannot, by any means drop 30$ on a box of warriors. This is an outrage. I quit. Games Workshop is out of control, and they're obviously never going to lower their prices, so I see no reason to buy their products any more.

Because its contents are now more expensive too, so you still get a deal

Hell, you think you'd be used to it by now, lol. Don't you have to do this once or twice a year?

You got part of that first sentence right. Please read the spreadsheet again. Neither of those items went up in price. It in fact says 'No change in price' right next to them.
