The end of the world as we know it. @ 2011/11/17 15:57:05

Post by: Jihadin

So...we've the US in a debt crises. The military about to be gutted since the Super 12 can't get it together. Congress can't/won't/clueless on working together. Big O inadvertently started a class warfare. Drug cartel is getting way out of hand on our southern border. California is being....california also a cali university rioting because of tuition hike. Justin Bieber is not some kid father so the teeny bopper rage is back on for him. Rick Perry has brain farts on the podium, OWS getting off the chain, 41 cent of the dollar is debt or something, and coffee prices might go up again. 2012 people.

So....I've 20 acres in northern WI, well, septic, nice size log cabin (900sqft) generator, food (MRE's/can goods/flour/hunting damn good up there), servicable weapons with enough ammo to sustain 4 major firefights, 4 sets of body army, workshop with tools that a man collects after so many years (snap on/craftsman) SO yes..I say I can sustain my family for quite awhile up there.

Land is easy to defend. Tall pine tree's and thick under growth. Running stream through it so fishing is good. A skid steer loader (mini bulldozer) to improve positions and expand bunkers.

(Just having fun)

If the world goes to Hell in a hand basket. What can you offer me for safety and security. What can you contribute to Fortress Dakka

It's amazing that the largest and most gluttonous military industrial complex in the history of mankind getting trimmed (and still being more expensive then every other military on earth combined) is a sign of the end times. Satan must have those anti missile laser planes we cancelled.

If someone has a bulletproof vest, beat them to death with a DVD player. Eventually they'll make and wear a DVD player proof vest and in that case we start using guns again.

Make stronger DVD players to try and race the production of vests, just like with guns.

Jihadin, you're really not prepared for a post-apocalyptic world.

I suggest you start buying (and drinking) lots of beer, bottles only, and saving up the bottle caps.

You also need to get way more sets of body armor. After each fight, you'll need to combine two of them together to get it back to peak condition.

And, start stocking up on Stimpaks. Food really isn't all that helpful. It's only useful for healing up between fights, and you can just drink from the toilet to do that.

Fine, do all the stimms you want. After four days without sleep you start to hallucinate, and then the helmeted zombies will swamp your position.

You're going to run a generator 24/7? Tsk, Tsk. If not someones just going to wait for a windless day to invade your couch fort.

I am very good with a katana believe it or not... I kid you not. And I'm small enough to be sent out on stealthy missions to steal supplies/get rid of troublesome people.

I am also very profficient in physics and can work well as weapons designer and fortifier. I also know the physics of electrical engineering though we haven't study it in depth yet.

The end of the world as we know it. @ 2011/11/17 17:31:23

Wow...actually think I'm going to run a generator 24/7....I'm not as soft as you think I am. I crank the generator only in a emergency. It better be a good damn emergency. Running the recharger for the DVD player...is not an emergency.....cranking the hand generator to recharge your DVD batteries is the way to go. It'll buff up on upper chest....and some you all need to grow a upper chest.

A katana...negative..not going to happen. If you need a weapon...well I know where to go for weapons commercial outlets. Military grade weapons. I just need muscles and security to "acquire" weapons for Fortress Dakka. Bring your own baby wipes to...tiolet paper I have is military...like wiping with 40 grit....

Easy E....nothing to offer? You have one thing I probaly need...are you good at...sprinting for long distance?

Your in look...good source of water to nearby to sustain the water cannon. You sir are my Heavy Weapon operator. Besides operating the water cannon you also have to get the coffee going first thing in the morning. Take your turn washing dishes and cooking....you can cook right?....boiling water is not cooking....can you skin a deer?

I can cook, I can skin and butcher a deer as well as pigeons, rabbits and squirrels, I can make a variety of improvised painkillers and explosives from basic chemical supplies, I'm 6'2" and I weigh around 171lb.

However I would probably go mad without tea and jelly babies...

Well...I do enjoy black tea....so be quite a huge stash of boxes of tea......as for IED's...it has to be command detonate on main walkways into and out of Fortress Dakka. Frag grenades can be acquired along with javelins...claymore...C4...AT4's..anyway....your SoL on the jelly babies....maybe raid a walmart or something...have to scout around first and see what can be salvage. No red Charger with the alarm going off driving around is not going to happen.

I have 8 horses and plenty of tack for them. Good for scouting, small raiding parties, and eating when decent forage for them becomes hard to get.

I may know a bit about tactics, may have a decent arsenal, and may have some survival type skills which could be of use.

Okay, 7.5 horses since Trooper is a mini horse. He can pull a cart with a few hundred pounds of supplies though, and in his tiny mind he is a 21 hand fire snorting war horse (just as the farrier).

Do need commo...listen to the airwaves...would that include commo head sets WarOrk? if not two cans on a string might work for a little while till we can come up with better. So your the Hunter for Fortess Dakka. Deers are quite big in NE WI...even bears are there.

One of the wheels on the Dumper is bigger than the rest though, so it can only go in wide circles.

I also have 12 chickens, 3 ducks and a goat called Horace

I'm suprised no one mentioned cats yet. I would bring cats. Not because I like them (they're okay, but I'm more of a dog man), but because if you want to destroy evil demons, you have to beat them to death with an equally evil demon. See, they know we have guns. They know we have swords, clubs, and axes. And they've prepared accordingly. But when they see you charging them with a pair of hissing, flailing cats, swinging them by their tails, that whole demon army is going to turn the hell around and run back to... well... Hell, I guess.

No one expects to be beaten to death with a cat though. They're both blunt AND sharp. At the same time. Bring it on, 2012.

I have a range of skills and am a quick learner and a team player. I'm happy to do pretty much anything that is required by the group from digging toilets to helping conduct surgery, skinning animals to helping repair machines and electronics. My wife is a science teacher, which is important for group continuation and I am certainly more than qualified to teach maths and science as well as certain aspects of engineering.

But in the short term I am a slightly unfit young man with a level head and a willing to do and learn all that I can and am required to do. Fitness and proficiency will come to those who work, but you can't engender the will.

I've never done it myself, but it looked fairly easy...course most things do until you try to do them.

Figure reloads be a work in progress till everyone gets it down. Not really worry about smokers cause I think cigerettes be.....gone..unless we plant tobacco leafs..everybody be pitching in on the garden to along with the hunting parties. We make sure we grab the equipment on a forage mission or hit up a gun shop...yellow pages be a good clue to we might acquire it. 5.56mm and 7.62mm simple. Be quite a haul bringing enough to make sure everyone carries/access to at least 210 rds per person.

Starter fort is to much effort and money to build. Jersey barriers are good. Cement up against the berms to reinforce..and make it look tidy works for us.

warpcrafter your time will come..just not at the moment...we have to go through one extreme to get really prime for the "GAME OVER MAN" phase. Possible you might bolo and come up NE WI in Jan with some zombies

Hell, there's a load of ammo laying around as it is, learning to reload them would most likely be an obtainable skill long before running out of existing surplus.

What can you offer me for safety and security.

Precisely as much loyalty and backup as I, and my two accompanying bodies are afforded.

What can you contribute to Fortress Dakka

I can weld/cut/braze metal so long as consumables or electricity can be obtained. Welded steel (Whether alone or used as a skeleton for a concrete wall) makes a better barricade than piled up furniture. Helps a bit when you have a major parts failure with no replacements available on your vehicles or other equipment. If you can find me a steel shop that has the proper alloys I can make you rifle plates for the body armor for a good long while.

I can do any work on an M16/M4 family weapon short of actual parts fabrication or modification that needs to be done maintenance/troubleshooting wise (I can run one pretty decently too.) Similar for the AK platform.

I brought my own ammo and support parts, rifle, body armor and rudimentary NV.

I can weave chainmail (Zombies and people who don't have guns ain't going to be doing a whole lot to ya.)

You'll have another body that won't fall to freakin pieces as soon as things get a little "energetic" and can be cross-trained to do anything that needs doing.

All ya gotta do is help me get food and walls to hide behind for me and mine, and not pose a greater risk than the zombies. (Looking at you, people on Walking Dead.)

Oh man, if a good portion of the internet infra was still there, you could have like, cyber-mad max battles where people are setting up rogue routing tables and competing DNS servers. You'd have to drive around and destroy rogue hardware to keep yours from having address conflicts.

With nobody running the deep web, netadmin becomes the wild west.

Gentlemen, we'll need to ensure we have plenty of tactical bacon. Phillipine Marines carry this stuff in their kit, and those guys are f***ing nuts. Like, Roided up Oompa Loompas with Rabies kind of f***ing nuts. Thus, by stocking tactical bacon, we'll be f***ing nuts and unstoppable.

Also, we'll obviously need certified blacksmiths and gunsmiths to repair tools and weapons. For some reason this -always- gets overlooked in an apocalypse until someone's weapon jams or their axe gets too dull to imbed itself in a zombie scalp.

I can solder some - not pro level, but I can make connections and the like. Also capable of basic vehicle repair, helluva cook, and if you put anything bolt-action in my hands, things will die.

And Jihadin, I don't have any room for guns in my home (Plus my landlord would probably disapprove...) But my buddy and I go out shooting beer caps and cans with his .308 Win. and his .22LR practically every weekend, and I used to go out shooting and duck hunting with my Grandpa in Alberta when I was younger. Safe to say I can nail a zombie between the eyes from 300+ feet without a problem.

M4's won't be a problem. Got to practice plenty with the C7A1 and C8 in the combat sim in the basement of the armoury. Eugene Stoner's rifles have had my heart since I was old enough to know what an AR15 was.

Okay, well no arguing. I'll just talk about my end of days preparation.

My first goal is to learn a bit of navigation. I know nothing about it.

Second goal, learn how to drive boats and basic naval skills (I'm enlisted in the navy and going in this summer. Thinking about being a BM with coxswain certification just for the experience)

Learn how to fire a gun. Never fired a real gun. Only airsoft guns. Airsoft guns won't be very useful, except to annoy people with.

Learn extensive survival skills. Fire making, shelter building, cold and hot weather techniques, the works

Buy as much military surplus as possible. Reliable, functional clothing will be a rare commodity. Also, camouflage helps a lot in a variety of situations

Buy a nice back pack. My ALICE rucksack won't last very long.

Keep up the values and skills I've learned in the Navy, and pass those value and skills upon my children, which will born in the wilderness of maryland to a beautiful mother of a hard character.

Water travel will be rare. If I can ride down a river in a small boat that can also be a home, I'd be a happy sailor. And the captain of it too.

[b]Okay, well no arguing. I'll just talk about my end of days preparation.

My first goal is to learn a bit of navigation. I know nothing about it.
Army Field Manual 3-25.26 - - Land Navigation. All NCO's are train to use a map and compass...lot lose that experience since we use pluggers. we can though get military maps of the area/state we are in.
Second goal, learn how to drive boats and basic naval skills (I'm enlisted in the navy and going in this summer. Thinking about being a BM with coxswain certification just for the experience)
That comes in very handy. Summer time in WI is quite a haul on good size fishes. Not Big Foot fishing please

Learn how to fire a gun. Never fired a real gun. Only airsoft guns. Airsoft guns won't be very useful, except to annoy people with.
Load out kit more then likely be M4 with a M9 with appropiate ammo for two engagement maybe a flashbang and a frag. Plus training on the crew serves and maintaining the MRAP ad up armor support vehicles

Learn extensive survival skills. Fire making, shelter building, cold and hot weather techniques, the works
We got that covered. Just need your body and sweat

Buy as much military surplus as possible. Reliable, functional clothing will be a rare commodity. Also, camouflage helps a lot in a variety of situations
ACU's are good.If can get multicams from the army or the marine digital woodlawn. We also need to stock up on much uniformsBuy a nice back pack.

My ALICE rucksack won't last very long.
Got you covered on that. I know where they keep the RDI equipment. Be one of the first place acquire from. So everyone can look like we're on deploymnt

Keep up the values and skills I've learned in the Navy, and pass those value and skills upon my children, which will born in the wilderness of maryland to a beautiful mother of a hard character.
Values and skills become ingrained in you. You become after a few years. Instatutionalize

I see Fortress Dakka is going to be a FoB style installation. We need a RTCH to stack 20 ft containers on blocks to keep off the ground. Wigh the handy guys around we can start building CHU's with AC and if possisle hot and cold water.

Also seems we're getting a wide spectrum of nationals here. I say country flags be flown. All same size. Though not to an extent they will give information about ourselves and who we have there

Yeah, if the world is falling apart, I'm guessing all but the most secured military bases will fall to the service members that are stationed there. That would be a great place indeed to be.

The more secure places (Fort Hood, Benning, etc) would probably be locked down and under the jurisdiction of whatever was left of the government.

Agreed on major military post's. We're not foraging from those installations. Their are plenty other site we can equip and maintain our selves. I'm trying to keep everyone alive and productive. Hold up at night. Wait till about 0200-0300 in the morning and stealth mode out. Sure the power grids will go out so be in your benefit. ot to sound stupid or what not. Get four phone books. Tw duct tape over your chest and the other two across your shoulder blade. Quick body armor and if you want to hole up in a pizza joint for the day you know where to look. So make sure wear dark clothes. Gunfire ensues it more likely pray and spray. You stand a good chance on making it out.

I got a spare set of CADPAT V1 and one smaller set of Flecktarn as well. Can easily get plenty of cheap CADPAT surplus in both AR and TW in Canada now that the A'stan mission is over. Suggest we stock up on it, as it's excellent stuff.

Also: I'm going to assume that Kevlar Plates, even surplus, will be in short supply post-apocalypse. So for anyone that doesn't watch Mythbusters - armouring your vehicle doors with phonebooks can actually stop most small arms fire. You'll still have to fix the windows up good n' proper, but it's a good, cheap way to add bullet-resistant capabilities to any working vehicle you may find in the Zombie wasteland.

And Jihadin, it's called a 'Street rink'. Even though there's a profound lack of a street through it.

Corpses, you're an Englishman. And the first thing any trueblooded Englishman would do post-apocalypse is start up his own Brewery. We'll need beers for those hot summer days, and a still for making hard liquor which is a must for any first-aid kit in the absence of proper rubbing alcohol. Plus, it could catch us some good loot trading booze to other survivor communities. You know in your heart you'd make a mean brewmaster.

And flamethrowers. People say that flamethrowers are useless in the Zombie Apocalypse, but I beg to differ. They'll make defense much easier against living opponents, we'll be able to start cooking fires in wet weather, we can heat water quickly with the same tech, and we can use the fuel as an igniting agent for lanterns as well, since supplies of electricity and batteries out in the field will likely be rare at best.

Oh! I just remembered! I have a beer making machine! It even has a tap right on it! All we need is some yeast, sugar, water, and those mini CO2 cartriges. Raiding paintball, airsoft, general DIY and outdoor sporting stores should be at the top of the list so we can always have a choice between carbonated beers or ale. I mean, sometimes you want a good blonde, lager, or pilsner after popping zombies, and sometimes you'll want a nice smooth amber ale or a hard-hitting black ale. Just because the world is ending doesn't mean we can't have a choice of brews

corpsesarefun wrote:Excellent.

Don't worry, if we can find someone certified to fly aircraft, and if we can strike a deal with Okanagan Valley survivors, we could get a tonne of grapes from remaining BC Wineries once a month in exchange for booze and any excess/salvaged weapons that we don't have the logistical capacity for. The great thing aboot Canada is that because Western Canada is so spread out, and major population centres tend to be few and far between, most of the farms there will probably still be operating.

I think 1 vote, 1 man would be the best plan, with any laws implemented sans vote being of the 'common sense' variety (ie - citizens may only carry sidearms in camp, except for posted guards. All other weapons must be securely stored in armoury when not in use)

I do think we would need to discuss the idea of being prepared to implement marshall law, as well as basic law enforcement needs, should our community ever branch out at all. Your land will sustain us for a time, but reclaimation and settling of the surrounding land will also be inevitable as our population increases with other survivors joining us. War with opposing groups of survivors is also a reality, and we need to be prepared to handle violent opposition when we annex future lands for the good of all.

No doubt, I think most groups will either be families and their friends or poorly organized groups that will gladly join us or just won't care if the Dakka Repulic absorbs them. They probably wouldn't object to the sense of security that comes from regular militia patrols. But we'll undoubtedly face bandits and gangs as well, which we'll need to be sure we're prepped for.

Now now. It's called Cremation. After all, what's stoping the Zombie plague from resurrecting the dead? Besides, it's not cannibalism if we're only using their bodies as fuel for a cooking fire. And that way, the dead are helping out one last time.

In most cases, the dead will probably have bled out pretty quickly, So a lot of the work will be done for us. And I said they'd make good -fuel- for a fire, not a good source of kindling. Once we get a good fire going, putting the prepared body of one of our honoured dead on it for fuel would be a pretty good idea.

I just realized, we need a storyteller and historian to chronicle and retell the tale of the fall of civilization and the rise of the Dakka Republic to future generations. After all, those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. I'm a fairly decent writer, and I love history. I could easily document the D.R.'s rise, though my storytelling is a bit weak. Actually, that's an excellent point - assuming we'll have a certified surgeon or doctor, harvesting the (healthy) organs of the dead would be a great idea - once we occupy a facility with a fuctioning walk-in freezer. I can only imagine how many people would join us simply based on the fact that doing so would ensure them adequate healthcare.

I still think cremation should be -the- method for corpse disposal (remember how I brought up flamethrowers earlier? Yea, exactly) and that we use their pyre for practical purposes at the same time, but organ donation should be considered, provided the conditions of the person's death was not due to Zombie Plague, Radiation, or anything else high-risk. I think burials should be ruled out though - Because you just never know with Zombie Plagues.

You can't keep organs "on ice" for more than a few hours. You would be able to keep them alive longer using some kind of bioreactor, but they are really not available outside of research. Not to mention the problem of properly typing them and matching them to patients.

A rear mounted .50, a forward twin .50 and I think an M60 somewhere.

NO, not because of apocalypse now. I knew about the riverines and Plastic patrol boats before I saw the movie. It just reinforced how cool they were.

Unfortunately, most of these particular boats are decommed, so we'd have to go with some more modern... Maybe this.

Why the hell does that boat need so many guns for. I'm not complaining. It's cool as hell. But really? That's a crew of at least five on a little itty bitty patrol boat! Be great for attacking a helicopter or blowing up a car in the apocalypse.

As an ex-tanker, my vote is NO apricots. Ever. Don't even mention them again.

They are evil and only bring bad luck.

Period.

One of the NCOs back in my BMQ was attached to the PPCLI in A'Stan. Had a story about a ride in the back of a LAVIII and one of the boys in his section had snacked on a bunch of dried apricots beforehand. I guess they have a tendancy to make people gassy, because he said it seemed like a really... really... reeeeally long ride

But I suppose YMMV on that...anyone who doesn't like em or they give em gas doesn't have to eat em...

I also vote no apricots however apricot booze is a maybe.

As for the dead, it probably isn't wise to use them as fertiliser if they radiation, virus's or some kind of poisoning had a hand in their demise and as we don't really have any way of checking that it would be smarter to burn them.

I'm an average stereotypical teenager that uses Dakka. I'm probably very unhealthy, and have the body mass of a squirrel.

Having said that, I'm a (fairly) good aim (No, not because I play CoD) and can probably run fast enough in an emergency. I don't need a lot of food, and I could probably make myself fairly useful in minor errands and supportive roles (i.e. "Fetch me some ammo boy, I need to keep the gun manned!" kind of thing)

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME TO DIE I WANT TO LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much do you weigh, how tall are you and what kinds of food will you eat?

I need to know as the leader of the UK "GET TO THE DAKKA" mission is either me or silver.

Not much, about 5'8", and whatever is to hand. Yes, that does include paper and the like. Just as long as it's not out of date.

I'm going to buy a tactical tomahawk and bring to this party? Do they make modern ones that you can smoke from?

And from his use of the word tactical (I hate this usage of the word) I assume he means a throwing tomahawk which isn't particularly useful anyway as you have to be pretty skilled and relatively strong to kill someone with one from a range and even then they are single use, once you kill a guy with one his mates will proceed to kill you.

Well, yeah..I suppose one tactic ( tactical use) of a tomahawk could be to throw it...which as you pointed out would be a bit silly ( might " look cool" in movies, IRL...dumb move), but as a hand weapon, to be used to cleave skulls...I could see it's practical use.

EDIT:...In fact, much like a machete , I could see a tomahawk as a " multi-use" tool.

Tomahawks as a close combat weapon are great and are pretty easy to make; you can improvise one from some shaped and sharpened plate steel and a good thick bit of steel piping.

It won't be comfortable or pretty but it will do the job for a good while.

The problem with tomahawks and the like is that you have to get close to your opponents to use them. They're okay against human and animal targets, but what happens when you're fending off zombies and demons? I don't know about the rest of you, but in the apocalypse, I'm placing my confidence in my boomstick first when faced with the undead and inhuman hordes.

Yea, there's a reason bayonets/combat knives are still issued and trained with (Often times before your rifle is even issued). But again, Insurgents are human opponents. That's all good and well, but I'm not getting that close to the walking biohazards that are zombies if I can help it. Yea I might have to take the odd bat to one's face or something, but if I can put distance between myself and them, and then take my shot, I'm going to.

Maybe come up with a automatic tomahawk thrower? We really don't need the spin on them or blade in flesh first...just knock em off their feet...we could start studing the contraption they use in the Pumpkin Chunkin in Deleware for a idea

As for the leader for the UK group I'm sure you all can volunteer someone.

As for Liquid...well we do need to retrieve the tomahawks when they are down range...

Deathhead a tomahawk decent but a folding e-tool....much better...I admit though...a tomahawk mounted on a IBA/IOTV looks pretty cool.

Yep..that would confuse the Hell out of me on which way to aim it...either Liquid takes one in the chest while "behind" it or he needs to pick more then just one tomahawk while down range amidst ducking and dodging zombies/bullets/arrows/kitchen sink/volkswagon/boulders...and whatever else we can throw down range

Yea militia will have a range for live weapons and a MOUT for CQC training with Airsoft rifles. That way we're not wasting as much live ammo on training, and we can have live targets in the MOUT to simulate armed enemies and zombies. Plus regular weapon handling, familiarization, and maintenance drills so I doubt that'll be an issue

Hey..I have a few questions...

If or when the UKers get over here....will there be withdraws from fish and chips?

If we ration the food to keep from starving and hot saucing your battle buddy...we can extend the ration by assigning the worst cook we can find?

If the country collapse...does that void the country itself? ie away with old gov't in with new?

As "Country" is more or less an " idea" and not an actual "thing" then so long as people " believe" in the idea it would still " exist"....even if the "machinery ( government)" no longer itself exist.
...Now, if your asking should attempts be made to " rebuild" the current system as it exist...then I'd say absolutely not...away with the old in with the new.

I suppose we could raid heavily defended military bases in the off chance politicians have holed up there purely to say "You're fired" before executing them.

I can't see how that could go wrong
