In a similar vein to the What are you doing today? Hobbywise Only thread I am curious what is currently on your desk being painted. Preferably in pictorial form.
If you don't have a permanent set up then in your drawer/shoebox etc.
Really intrested to see what you are working on and what it looks like before its finished.
I am currently jumping between several different Sengoku Jidai (Samurai) era models. They are in various states of unfinished and I wish I had taken more care with the mould lines.
Please Share what you are working on.

Right now I have a Land Raider Crusader:
I just started painting the tracks so those will be added soon. After that I have to assemble the hurricane bolter sponsons. It also needs a gloss coat and some decals followed by some oil washes and weathering.
I don't have any pictures of this stuff, but I have a Land Speeder Storm that I disassembled and cleaned up, primed, and waiting for paint plus 5 sternguard bodies primed and waiting for paint.
Soon my desk will be flooded with Imperial Guardsmen for a commission I accepted so all my goodies will be placed on the back-burner.

My Land Raider Crusader, Legion of the Damned squad(s), a few Honour Guard, some Tactical Marines and my entire Ork army bar 4 models.
XD
I'll post pics once I figure out how to get my webcam to take pictures again.
Edit; There we go.
I think? First time using attachments, sorry.
Also added my Termies and I didn't photograph my Orkses.
For obvious reasons.
The Honour Guard will all look like the two that are painted in that picture.
The Legion are an odd colour because I cannot paint flames for my life, so I did my own chapters take on them; they're made up of the armour, bone and blood of their bodies, which were never recovered. The purple PC and black PG are going to become Legion members soon.
And yes, my army is Genestealer Purple.

Good idea for a thread, popping by to sub and I'll innundate you all with photos as soon as my tiny toddler master gives me half a moment to post them! Here we go, as promised, forgive the lighting just used my painting lamp in a hurry: And what you're seeing should be the undercoat for my first Plague strike team for deadzone: 4 large human-sized mutant guys, large dog, 2 beefy gorilla-like plague mutants, and the biggest first generation plague mutant in the front. You might also notice a strain necromorph (spot the zombie/mutant thing that doesn't belong!) who got prepped for painting just as my DZ stuff came in. There's also an Infinity Reverend Moira, she's got a mean sword, a big gun, and unreasonably revealing clo... optical diversionary camouflage . Also you can see the enforcer sniper also available in the deadzone boxed game, and two 3" cube structures built out of deadzone scenery tiles, these are destined for more time with the airbrush as they will end up light grey, but they were undercoated and available for photographing. There's a ton more DZ scenery waiting in the wings to see how these two small pieces go, but any more minis I'll have to assemble before I can paint. I'll say it again, there's some really cool stuff here... land raiders, titans/knights, really neat conversions and what looks like some already very nice paint jobs

Well, I may as well chip in my own paltry efforts I've been getting sick of painting smaller models recently, but can't bring myself to burn a new Contemptor sized hole through my wallet without at least ploughing through some of the stuff on my desk. Hence, here's my latest efforts, a Death Company converted Salamanders assault squad (For the same price I get far more goodies in the DC box, at the expense of a lot of Blood Angel iconoclasm ). They're still WIP, as the pic quality indicates (They better in real life - honest! ), but should be done and dusted tomorrow evening!

I am rebuilding my paint collection after a 10 year break from the hobby and found myself without a proper shade of green, so this was a 50/50 fix of Reaper's Highland Moss and Green Ochre colors, and then thinned of course. I use to use Vallejo paints, but decided to give Reaper paints a chance when I needed to start over from scratch. Been pretty happy with them so far.

I like Vallejo a lot. Never tired reaper. The green looks good mate. Very earthy, great for a ranger.

Looks good to me mate. Yeah I get that too had a period where I was buying way too much new stuff without ever touching the old. Kind of felt like whats the point, just collecting stuff to have it. So I sold a load of my stuff and tightened my focus.

Next up, a Farseer, then maybe a Falcon for this weekend.
I basically stopped playing (and painting) about 10 years ago and have recently dived in again full force. I had a bunch of Eldar I had painted for my army in the past, but I decided to start completely from scratch with a single unified color scheme (Biel-Tan). My stumbling block in the past was that I usually painted for display more than play, and always had trouble fielding a fully painted force. If Yakface happens to stumble across this, he would remember since I used to play with him so, SO long ago. This time I decided to challenge myself to aim for a table top level of painting and find the discipline to stick with it and produce an ARMY instead of a collection of figures. So far, I started painting 10 days ago, and currently have 58 models done.

I was going to make a lap tray of sorts but I sat down at the rolling kitchen island one day and she left it alone so I've been using that since. Bleakswords and Darkshards as usual. I try to keep the prospect of painting them less depressing by mixing in the new RXBs with the old warriors/shields but when that fails I'll make a start on stripping/priming the odd collection of shades, executioners and beastmasters I've picked up on eBay. There's a Dark Elf Reaper to do as well (definitely not High Elf, honest!), along with a Wych I'm converting to a lvl1 sorcerer.

The special effects paints are the greatest things to have happened in my ammeter-painter life. I'd never have been able to pull of blood before, but with BFTBG I can do it easily. Probably gonna pick up the rest of the set.

I obviously cannot fully speak for him but the most likely reason you see some green stuff there because that half-tabard is from the Deathwing Command Squad box and looks like this:
He removed the broken sword icons (which are heavily involved in Dark Angels iconography) to make it more suitable for use for a pre-Heresy Emperor's Children model. The green stuff was probably just to smooth out the cloth on the tabard a little bit.

@TableTopJosh - Just because I noticed you were asking for C&C, for a beginner, those IG and SW are looking pretty decent. To be honest the only improvements I can offer are a second sharper highlight on the guardsmen, and possibly thinning your paint a touch on the SW - other than that they're looking pretty ace, especially that Manticore!
I'm rather enjoying this WIP thread, less pressure to put out a finished image! (Making me think, yet again, about a blog...)So for my own efforts, having finished my assault squad (I'll get round to some professional pics soon), with the exception of one plasma pistol yet to be done, I've moved onto a Rhino - my first ever tank. So, I decided to suitably Salamanders it up, starting with a small scene some of you may recognise from Nick Kymes recent Novel 'Vulkan Lives'...
The finished assault squad - Ignis Gladii (The Fire Swords):

Lol no... ScootyPuffJunior (looove the name btw) is correct, but I use them as knight proxies. I actually made my first one up before all this Imperial knights business to use as a corrupted knight with my own homebrew rules and GW was nice enough to make actual rules. If they hadn't been stupid and denied Chaos the use of them I would have been really happy. I haven't had any issues getting the first one in game as an allied Knight, so it's all good. I am intersted to see what they come up with once they actually make a FW or GW Chaos knight though. When the mortis is finished it will look something along the lines of my crusader gone Hell Knight:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/570038.page
They are admittedly a little over scale for a knight, but I still love the model.

Yeah but that is more of a big ass space ship than a drop pod and cost as more than a landraider, not exactly what I was looking for, but I suppose could work.

I'm working on some minis based on the film 'Cross Of Iron'. They're white metal 28mm and were an eBay purchase.
** Leutnant Meyer, Feldwebel Steiner and Obergefreiter Kruger **
These have been block painted and are waiting for Quickshading.
** Schutze Kern, Schutze Maag and Gefreiter Anselm **
These have been block painted and Quickshaded in a dark tone. They need to be drybrushed and highlighted and then sprayed with matt varnish before their bases are finished.
** Obergefreiter 'Schnuurbart' Reisenauer **
Primed in black and waiting to be painted. This was actually the first mini that I completed, but when it was being dipped in Quickshade and shaken dry it fell off its holder and landed on the floor. It was easier to strip it of paint and varnish, than try to pick off the cat hair and dust that was now sticking to the Quickshade.
Each mini was epoxied to British one penny coins for basing, and the bases built up with Humbrol model filler.
When finished they'll be put into a custom basing tray and displayed.
Am I a 'Cross Of Iron' anorak? Probably.
Nothing wrong in appreciating a classic war movie, though.

Well I unfourtunately don't have a picture of what I am painting right right now but I do have this sitting on my desk right now (bad lighting in this picture): It provides me with a little bit of Skaven inspiration while I paint up the nest horde of rat things!!! I did also just finish painting a custom Warplock Engineer with Doomrocket but right now I am 90% complete my Doomwheel. I just have to paint the banner and drybrush the base (and glue the model to it). I tend to get about 90% done a model where it is nearly complete and can field it but wait to finish it because I always move onto something else haha After the Doomwheel is a block of 25 clanrats. Once I do that I might move on to painting some Tau. I have so much Tau and Eldar to paint (3 models for space marines left tho!!!) I also have a piece of terrain in the works right now tho! P.s Some people have some CRAZY messes on their desks haha If I have more than 3 or 4 models on my desk I am like awww damn this is to much on my desk (plus like a bazillion paints but I try to keep them in the drawers unless I am using them)

My first attempts at airbrushing. Using an old Chimera as a test model. So far so good, I think! I have the base color and highlights done, about to mask it off for camo and then its off to fine details, varnishing, decals, washes, weathering, etc.!

So, here's my 90% finished 'Nocturne's Wrath' - my first ever tank. I must admit, for the largest model I've painted to date, I'm surprised that it's also my fastest painted model. Anyway, enoguh rambling here it is, including the completed image some may know from 'Vulkan Lives':
It's not fully done yet, as I'm struggling with what to do on the front Glacis plate. It's got some Salamanders transfers to go on the front-side black segments, and the black needs highlighting, but other than that I'm stuck - any ideas Dakka?

I was originally working on a Dwarf Man O War fleet but they have been pushed down the painting list for a pair of Vengeance Weapon Battery's for my Skyrar's Dark Wolves army for a tournament at the start of next month.
You can see the base of the first one nearly finished towards the back of the photo.

Finally got bored of Guild Wars 2.... Time to start painting again Excuse the crappy picture; taken with a phone camera, then re-sized by the gallery to make it even more blurry I've been messing around with a new recipe for nmm gold and, despite only having about 30mins to work on it before I went to work, i'm pretty happy with the results. I might add a bit more low-lighting on the fleur- de-lys symbol though as it has too much flat colour for my liking. Blue looks crap, but it's just base-coated and washed so i've got a nice solid foundation and, I keep telling myself, all the shadows are in the right places! Give me a couple more days and the mess on the desk will start to look more complete. Edit: Ah... If you can be bothered to click on the image and zoom in a couple of turns of the mouse wheel, you get a much clearer pic!

Wow, that NMM is looking good! Would you mind sharing your recipe at all? I like the way I do gold now, it's sort of NMM using metallics (Nerdfest 09's recipe ), but I'd like to be able to do 'proper' NMM - I've just never known where to start!
the shrouded lord wrote:@ warpig: awesome. the helmet of the fallen guy on the back looks a little weird, but still. awesome.
Yeah, on the original image, the fallen marine (Captain Nemetor of the 15th Reconnaissance Company) is being cradled by Vulkan, so his head is limp and falling back - hence why my image is like that, although on this scale against an already black background I've found it hard to emphasise the shading.

Finally got some time to start painting some more:
Also, did a quick and dirty color test (both figures slated to be stripped) with the goal of doing Imperial Fists:
The one on the right is Army Painter Demon Yellow color primer. It came out was to thick when I used it like I would any normal primer, which I have since read on these forums is common. The one of the left is a random stab at Rustoleum's 2in1 color and primer in a "Summer Squash" color. The actual figures are more yellow than the photo makes them look. I don't think the one on the left is yellow enough, all the same. I think I just need to keep working with the Army Painter brand of yellow and try to get enough mastery that it isn't so thick. Even though it claims to be a primer, I am thinking primer in white or grey and do a light dusting of the yellow?

Post by: J.Black
I dunno... The Army painter one looks good if you want to build up a rich yellow colour, whilst the other looks great if you want a more stark finish :S

I quite like the yellow one.

Yeah, I think what is going to work is grey primer first, then the Army Painter yellow over. I have been practicing and think I got the application down better. Now I just need to strip all the practice runs and start over.

Nothing quite as impressive as some of the other stuff posted prior to now, but here's what's in front of me at current.
Third (and final, for now) Vostroyan Heavy Weapon Team with a Lascannon. I've already finished to of them off and decided to go ahead and do a few more infantry models. I recently completed a Grenade Launcher (second of a pair) and wanted to go ahead and knock out this HWT. Next on the chopping block is the Sergeant w/ a Power fist pictured next to the Lascannon HWT I'm working on. After that, I'm not sure if I'm going to paint another few infantry models, or if I'm going to get started on more vehicles. Currently have two Valkyrie/Vendetta flyers to paint, a pair of armored Sentinels, as well as a Devil Dog and a Leman Russ Vanquisher to paint still for vehicles. On top of that, I've still got a good ~20 infantry still to paint. Trying to make headway, slowly. Getting this HWT finished will help get me motivated, as they take so much longer to paint vs. a standard infantry model.
That's my contribution. Thanks for looking

It is a plague mutant. It's not far off from a zombie, but it still reasons on some level, enough to use technology and especially spacecraft to get the bigger more virulent plague monsters off the planet and to another one. The guys that don't mutate into a useful form like this can still animate as a kind of zombie, mutant spikey zombie, but truer to the archetype. I'll consider it, I've got some nurgle rot that I'd like to try out. May wait for the proper zombies too though.

Hive Fleet Cerberus wrote:Just out of curiosity, what are these Paint-jar looking things with clay on top? I guess some are paint jars, obviously. But what purpose does the clay hold?
The jars themselves are old paint pots from the Polly-S acrylic paint line that I used in... sometime in the early 90s. Probably 91-93ish. By 95, I had switched to mostly GW paints (and then to Vallejos just after 2000). I kept all of my old Polly-S dried up jars because they are the perfect size for GW circle bases stuck on with blue- tac.
As to the... clay? I am not sure what it is the looks like the clay (since I am so used to what they are). The tops were all painted with the colors that were in them at the time. Most of them have a ring of black slop paint from me painting the bases of previous figures. The lids are also metal, so they work well for holding onto my magnetized swappable weapons as well.
Since I am posting, here is that same group of figures tonight:
I need probably another 2 hours to finish up the lot.

This is my first airbrushed vehicle. Did base coat and then a highlight for each color in the camo. I achieved the pattern using masking tape. I could have been a tad neater with the tape, but I didn't know any better and am learning from experience. Now that the camo is done its on to the details.

Ah, ok, almost certainly it is blu-tack then (or some similar product) like in this pic I found online:
More about the product can be found here:

(Blu-tack is also what is holding all of my guardians to the top of my paint pots, you just can't see that in the pics I have posted.)

Blue tack is great. I use it for that, as well as trying poses for minis. Sometimes I even use it as makeshift gap filler, just a light coat of super glue on top.

Used to use blue tak as we now use Green Stuff, back in the day, like you say, coat of superglue and you are golden.
You can also now get Black Tak, which is much stronger.

Now if i could just find where my wife stashed the rest of the platoon and get them based, I'll be back in business
Also you can see in the background my vets, a combo of Empire greatsword, SM scouts, and Cadian kits with bits from anvil industries. (on a side note I have trouble getting their resin to stay glued to things, i washed them but should I be using something other than plastic or standard superglue?). Also the faceplate of my knight, I'm thinking of naming him the Jack of Blades but I've kinda hit rut and cant decide on design for the back plate.

Post by: AngularDeath
@ carlos13th & Hive Fleet Cerebus - Thank you guys! I'm hoping to finish it up in the next week or so and will keep posting updates.
As for faster painting without working in batches, I am probably one of the slowest painters ever. It doesn't help that I love the IG, either. I would say my motivation for a finished product is what keeps me on track and working at a good enough pace when I actually am sitting down and painting. Sometimes I keep a few finished models on my desk as a reminder that what I'm working on will look like them soon enough.
Here's the latest update to the Chimera. Experimented with oil paints to create rain streaking effects for the first time last night and I feel pleased with the results. I think it looks a bit greasy here because of the gloss varnish and I don't think the oil paint had quite dried when I took the picture. When I'm done with the whole model it will get a nice spray of dullcote. What do you guys think of it?

Tha way when FW finally do the Prospero book I will have a small force to start with and also in 40 K they are Logans elite bodyguar, wearing the oldest and best armour of the chapter and to reflect their status they keep the original colours... (why on earth did they change the colour anyway?
I am glad you like them. I will hopefully have them painted in a few more days, then I will start Gren stuffing pelts etc for them

Just about as done as I can make them until I get home to break out the Green stuff
Starting to become one of my favourite models, does the helmet look okay? It was just a very last minute rush-job before I head home from offshore.
Ideas for basing would be cool, as I dont like the current colour scheme.
Thanks for looking, C&C welcome

My army is a mix up off all clans, what ties them together is that they all have cheks, da boss is a goff, he likes cheks!
Bout 80-90 % there on these... some details that got missed, and some bits to finish... anything white will be cheks.

Just got the last six plague of my initial plague strike team dipped, so here they are along with the two finished minis to the right and a couple of wip terrain pieces. I'm really liking the little spot I've claimed out in the garage, can leave things set up and even stinky processes like dipping can be done and left alone. Worst case the garage door can be opened.

This isnt exactly something being painted, rather its something still being sculpted. Though I'm sure it'll fit here perfectly
To be honest, I dont really know what the hell this is. Some kind of Nurgle Chaos spawn I assume. Gonna add some mutations to the legs, including some tyranid toxin sacs on them for flavor. Then, drop it in some paint thinner to get off the old paint job.

Just finished this guy up the other day, a tyranid harpy/crone heavily customized.
The biggest thing was to change his flight orientation from diving,to looking as if he is almost coming in for a landing.
Other modifications;
Custom flight stand (1/2" acrylic rod).
Lots of green stuff work to support head in new angle.
Modified tail (there are vector strike victims on the base)
Fully magnetized to be crone or harpy
Custom scenic base (not done yet in pic).
Crone has small claws instead of acid sac arms.
wings magnetized for easy storage.

Is that incredibly green paint, or did you green stuff 90% of its body?
26170
Post by: davethepak
It is incredibly "green" paint.
I dip my tyranids to give them a "alien slime" look when done, the green turns into a neat looking alien flesh tone, and the orange paint turns into a color similar to a crab shell.
(it took a LONG time to find the right colors to achieve that effect).
As far as the green stuff work on him, I will try to post up a seperate thread on him in the P&M section - I just wanted them to look different, so I put a lot of work into altering the models.

Just got these undercoated, the white buildings may well end up dirty yellow, the black buildings will probably get painted like these: And only the rightmost piece is finished, the other two still need blood, rust, maybe some metal on the little cube, and a flat coat. Everything will get some posters once I figure out how I want to do it. Probably some stenciled numbers too, since that seems appropriate.

Stuck in the depths of Heraldry...... I was.
Worked on Knight N° 1 and decided to go for a black&white scheme ( ok since white = silver ), with a few twists because the house likes to join crusades, especially Black Templarish ones, rather than staying at home.
Somehow I feel I got carried away a bit placing decals on him.
Looking up real knights however made it him not so bad...
