Welcome to the 15th Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka! For those who are new, these challenges are open to any and all forum members, regardless of skill or experience, and are a great way to get motivated to paint your models and be a part of this awesome community project!
The theme for this month's challenge is Everyday Hero. This can be interpreted however you like, but the focus should be on the humble troopers that make up your armies, rather than the mighty heroes that lead them. For example, a Cadian Guardsman would be far more fitting than a Space Marine Chapter Master; everyone expects heroic feats from the latter, not so much from the former!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 4 images and one separate image would count as your 5 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st May and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st May. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

A lone guardsman sniper in a building.
What's that lurking in the shadows?
Let's take a closer look!
Here is Private Stabby, everyday hero of the guard!
Here are his best friends and protectors, ready to shoot anyone that dares try to shoot at Private Stabby.
I’ll be painting a basic Ultramarine. No dark secrets, no vampiric/wolven mutations. Just your average battle-brother. No fancy rules or special snowflakes. Just a suit of power armor and a bolter, against the uncaring universe.
Decided I'm going to do half of a Veteran Melta squad that's been gathering dust for my homebrewed Imperial Guard Regiment. You may notice a few mechanical hands and limbs. The Antellian Legions are wealthy in skilled augmeticists, so its not uncommon to see bionic replacements in the ranks of its leadership and veteran troopers.
Because nothing says Everyday Heroes quite like a few humans thrown into the brutal cauldron of warfare in the 41 Millennium with nothing more than a helmet, flak jacket, and lasgun.
I'm in for May! I'll be painting up some Chaos Cultists for my Khorne Daemonkin army. I figure they are very much the everyday heroes of any Chaos force, as they are usually the ones who first attract the attention of any Daemons or Chaos Marine warbands. Here's my proof pic:
Yes, I know there are nine models there. I'll paint all of them and then select the best ones to be my final entry for the challenge. I intend to definitely include the dude with the flamer, and I will most likely include one of each other sculpt (from the pistol/CCW unit found in the DV set). The champion will not be included as he is already painted, albeit poorly. He will get a partial repaint, but that will only be seen in my P&M blog. Expect some Blood for the Blood God when all's said and done!
Alright got some Keisotsu and yuriko who technicly is also one but is somehow a special operative as well, so she might not count though I'll do them all and just not enter her.
I might change my mind but I have a few bitz laying around for a couple of months now,
I had a pretty funny idea - at least to me it's funny.
Depending on how it turns out, I might change my entry to a "more serious" one.

Anvil are supposed to be releasing a new range of IG equivalents mid month, I'll wait 'til then to decide what I'm doing as I need a couple of Guardsmen for Tarantula base I'm planning
well, I was going to do some grotz, but they're taking longer than I expected to strip, so I want to do a flash git (again). I think he's your everyday hero because he's not an HQ unit. what you say, Paradigm? I'll post a proof pic once he's primed.
Loken is probably a bit too hero-y, being both a named character and of high rank. Enter it if you like, but bear in mind a large part of what people vote on is how well an entry fits the theme. I'll leave it up to you, though, this is one of those themes where anything goes so long as you can explain why.

Hey that's fair. I'll do a marine with a heavy Bolter in that case. That's got everyday hero written all over it.
Edit - probably for the best. First hand painted model in a while & it turned out very average! One Must stop speed painting.
A little back ground info on how I got to this entry.
I started thinking about the theme and wanted to go down the "common or everyday" Super Hero route. So figured I'd go with a rubbish or very basic hero, e.g. Recycling man or the amazing rolled up newspaperboy
I started my research and wow have there been some bad "super"heros, Squirrel Girl was a particular favourite. While looking at these b-rate heroes I remembered one from my youth and thought it would be ideal since it was a terrible hero but also done in a mocking way which made me like it and remember him.
10 imaginary Midget points for the first person that can guess which "Hero" (pic below) my entry will be based on, an Ork version of course. An extra 5 points if you can name the sidekick.
First was my first bateep. SM with plasmagun in close combat with a greater daemon slays the thing with his knife, while taking a few mortal wounds himself.
Second was a meltagunner firing on a landraider redeemer at extreme range. All other melta dead (very fluffy army, not very competitive) so I needed a miracle and he pulled it off. Was 4 sixes in a row or similar.
Epic memory was also assault SGT with thunderhammer taking out a CSM spider walker (forget its name).
Anyway, when these miracles happen its some of the best gaming magic.
g'day...first time entering anything in one of these comps, so I might start with something fairly light, don't wanna risk biting off more than I can chew just yet
so, nothing quite says "everyday hero" to me quite like the humble grots...the little gits have a hard life, but when it comes down to it, they help keep pretty much everything running, they keep the shootas stocked with ammo, they keep the engines greased and fueled, they scout the battlefield, they do just about everything that da boyz can't be bothered doing, which is a lot!
...so I thought I'd show off their efforts in a small diorama, something like 5 assorted grots trekking along a small rocky path, hauling supplies off to da boyz
so far it's looking like: an old gorkamorka "banna grot", leading 3 nobz kit ammo runts, and a rokkit ammo runt from the stompa kit...though the 3 ammo runts could be a little much, might swap one or two out for a couple of different ones for variety...I'll see what I can find...
anyway, here's a starting shot of what I'll be working with (pending a couple of possible grot swaps)
ooh, shame about the 5-model limit (does a grot still count as a whole model? )...I just had a rummage and dug up an old "big gunz" kannon, and a few grot crew members (they're half-painted, and would need stripping first)...so now I could very easily pack out my little diorama with about a dozen assorted grots and a kannon ...so I was struggling for variety, now I have to figure out which 5 I want to use!
...also, would the kannon count as a model? ...I feel like it probably would, but I figured I'd ask anyway.
However, you do raise a good point, this month is a good one for getting squads done and dusted, so what would everyone say to raising the limit to 10 models for this round? We've done that in the past and it worked well enough, and while it's not going to become a regular thing, I think this theme merits a similar extension.

I’d be fine with it.
In general I prefer to keep the 5 model limit just to balance things out a little. Some of use struggle to get one or two guys done for the comp in a month. When the field is potentially packed with complete armies and extravagant dioramas, it could be a little disheartening. I get that a lot of themes require more then one figure to convey. But just keep things reasonable most of the time. I view the rules more as strong guidelines anyway. Exceptions are expected, particularly when the Rule of Cool in invoked. Worst case scenario, you don’t get votes because you strayed too far from the theme.

well naturally I'd be ok with that, as it benefits me , and also I'd say it does lend itself well to the current theme...but hey, take that with a hefty grain of salt, I'm still just a newbie here, I wouldn't know what possible impact it would have on something like this, and I'm certainly not trying to just show up out of nowhere and start trying to bend any rules or anything! I'd be just as cool with it if it stays at 5 models, so, totally up to you guys, easy come, easy go
was really hoping my celtic infantry models would come in time for this but it's looking like a no
and tbh I'm not too keen to do more luna wolves atm, I need a bit of a break, already doing 5 per month, I don't think I could manage 10. They're a touch more fun than doing Plague Monks, but not by much lol
Anyway, I'll see what's in my stash that I'd like to actually work on, I may pull out another mousling set
I don't mind the upper limit being altered (within reason), so long as the lower limit stays intact. As mentioned, getting more than a couple of models done a month can be real tricky for some (you may have noticed I fall into that category).
Yeah, sadly I am not a Paradigm and only manage to get a couple done a month. 5 is usually an achievement. That said if the majority want 10 it just means I will only enter 5, no big deal really.
Yeah, there's no pressure to enter any more than you're happy to do, I just figure a big part of these challenges is motivation, so if this month we can get a few people to power through larger units to add to their armies then mission accomplished!
Since no-one seems dead set against it, consider the limit officially raised to 10 models.
I'm really scratched on what to do for this month - have an idea what to do but .....well I'll throw it out and see what Para thinks. Thinking of painting up Mad Larkin from Gaunts Ghosts. While he is technically a named character - the ghosts, to me anyway, really fit/suit the 'everyday hero' theme. Anywho...... What the call the Para?
either: 5 lasrifle auxilia (actually 20, but that's beyond the point ) or 5 Death Guard MK III tacticals (or MK IV depending on paint limitations). Proof pics up tomorrow night most likely as I need to top of some commission work.

Obviously it is Para's call, but to me, all the Ghosts would qualify as everyday heroes, even those that are no longer in the series (except one, obviously - glad he's gone).
Do the Tau, Jadenim. I like seeing everyone else's Tau color schemes, it kind of gives mine some context. That and I've seen some really cool Tau around this website.
I'm in. I really want to do a runtherd in honor of all the parents out there (the real "Everyday Heros"), but alas, I'm building an army and Tankbustas are the priority right now.
This is Tankbusta #3, w/ Panzerfaust & "Can Opener":
Modeled after these guys:
Obviously, the weapon needs some more greenstuff work, but if you're not familiar with a panzerfaust, it was an early anti-tank weapon, basically just a disposable tube with a sight on it that fired an explosive shell w/ pop-out guidance fins. You had to get within 100 ft of your target (a tank) for it to even have a prayer of hitting. SInce tanks were usually surrounded by infantry, I figure it was quite a feat to make this work, and if you did succeed in killing a tank single-handedly from close range, well, you weren't just infantry anymore, you would be a hero!
These old RT marines always seem a bit more individual than the modern multi-part, multi-post models (not knocking the new models, just saying...). So I feel more like this is a guy with a story behind him (obviously, a story of great heroism!).
Gulgog you've put some real effort into finding the right parts for that guy, he looks great already
As much as I like to see Ork entries I also am partial to a Tanith entry. Good choice Jan I'm sure you'll do Larkin proud (I had a go at Larkin myself using a combination of bits)
Since no one has guessed my clue I'll say what I'm doing,
Captain Baseballbat Boy (Ork)
It might be a bit niche so I'll explain,
Captain BaseBallBat-Boy is a fictional character, a superhero created by Sammy Waters. He is the main character of the Captain BaseBallBat-Boy franchise, appearing in newspaper comic strips, comic books, and television series (more than 168 episodes broadcast in 2003).
How I knew of Captain Baseballbat Boy is from the game Max Payne a favourite of mine from when I was growing up, I view him as very much a piss take hero so fitted my idea of b-rated "everyday Hero" type.
Could I enter too, please? I'm new to the forum and haven't entered this competition before. I haven't been painting all that long either, about a year.
I have to post proof that the miniatures I've chosen are unpainted, yes? Here you go -
I don't think you get much more "everyday hero" than R2D2 and C3PO!
loving everyone's ideas so far! looking forward to seeing how they all turn out!
...made a bit of progress on mine, well, I finalised the models I'll be using, and built the diorama base thingy, magnetised the grots to it (so the base can pull double-duty as a piece of scatter-terrain ), and primed the lot...so this is more of an updated "proof pic" than a "WiP pic" really...nevertheless...
Yes! Mycanaeans ordered =D, have to see if they'll get here in time, might be close. <crosses fingers> Quite excited since I'd been wanting historical figures in 28mm for a while now but not seen any that weren't either horrid, or just plain not 28mm.
I like how you have complied that scene Zbo, looking forward to it progressing.
Welcome feltmonkey, those models look quite small and detailed it will be good to see how you bring the detail out of them. God luck to you.
If only they had Orks hidden inside of them (joke reference a model I did on another challenge)
Finally got some opportunity to sling some paint this morning. All of 4 hours work to lay down base colours and blend the armour. Need to glaze the armour to get some colours in.
Just an update for me.
Drop pod.. mostly done. Just need to clean up my sloppy Ness.
Wolves look fricking amazing. I'm very very happy with them.
The two nids.. I'm still undecided on Chittenden colors but I got their guns done.
And a renegade box came so I had to rush to get him painted and assembled. I can see alot that needs doing on him. But I'll take a better shot in the light of the sun today.
Have a great night guys and gals.
If any of you bd mothers, happy day to you lasses!
Oh I guess I should get around to showing my entry, it is just a plain jane 10 man legion tactical squad with a sgt who has ravens talons. They only have a basecoat down (as I forgot to take pictures of them yesterday before I put the basecoat down so hopefully they are okay)
Thought I'd do some quick WIP shots of this weekends progress
The cloak is a GS press mold I created, the cap turned out ok just about, the bat is a spure attacked with a file which I'm very happy with.
When going down the baseball theme I started trying to remember all I new about baseball (not much and mainly from films I'm afraid) but I did remember a myth/fact about Babe Ruth pointing to the "centre field" (The Sandlot Kids Movie) and then hitting a home run in that direct during an important game so I thought I'd try and also incorporate that into the model as a little homage to him and that event. I like to try and get in little references like that to my entries.
even with the background info, I still have no idea what on earth you're doing there MG - but whatever it is, I'm liking it! ...that bat's turned out great too!
Hi,
none of my current to do list fits this theme so it took me a while to work out what to do for this one.
Here is my proof, only a little one this month.
Design for this month's entry is pretty much sorted now but looks like it'll be a few days before I can get started on it due to a sudden and unwanted hospital stay :/
Still, should still be able to get stuck in by the weekend.....fingers crossed
Well i me and my wife will do two tac marines and my son will be doing a "converted" gretchin tac marine, after a great convertion in the spacemarine challenge he wanted one for his ork armythe snapfit guys , might get a couple of purity seals added, but i need to get one unit done, and osrics gretchin
puny umiez! see? dat armour's only fit fer a grot!
love it man! ...and actually, seeing how perfectly that fits...I'm way too tempted to make a "mega-armoured grot" squad (counts-as 'eavy armour boyz) ...unfortunately I probably won't though, got wayyyy too much in my WiP mountain to get through, really shouldn't start anything new for a while
Get well soon Januine, remember to play nice with the nurses.
Interesting stuff everyone. Keen to see the finished results.
There's a lot of marines going on here, I feel like I should change my entry, but still gonna stick with the Epirians for now. Just need to find time to get started!
ZoBo wrote: even with the background info, I still have no idea what on earth you're doing there MG
Don't worry, I get that feeling a lot and I'm the one making these things.
Cool Mootlet when I see a snotling with a mushroom spear I know its got to be a good entry
Interesting Idea Loricatus Aurora, almost like the evolution of man if you face them sideways
I'm really glad you liked the original Grot marine idea KINGPIN54, I think this is the first time someone has copied an Idea/model I've done which I'm taking as massive compliment, thank you. The head you have chosen suits perfectly. I did start writing a "How to" guide for the Grot Marines since you and a few others showed an interest but sadly I haven't finished it yet.

Midget! Yu are a curse on my marines, with the only gretchin box set available, there are a few 4 heads left over and as most people know i have a good bunch of snapfit marines... The gretchin heads do fit nicely! Thanks for the inspiration and curse!
Hahhaha - even in hospital I get to post hobby stuff!!! Check out those sexy Korean hospital pyjamas!!!!
Couple of early design doodles for my entry this month, presuming I ever get let out of here!
After consideration me and wife decided to rather get the snapfit converted servitors a lick of paint. As with all my entries thus far they will be part of my imperial ghost chapter.
I received this model in a swag bag. I know it's from Age of Sigmar, but I have no idea what it is.

WIP
Lots of good stuff, looking forward to seeing finished minis.
Take care and good luck.
That model looks like the free one from that White Dwarf a while back. It's a Stormcast Eternal Liberator. I actually have that one and it is patiently waiting its turn to get painted. Looks like you are making a good start on yours!
My proof as well, these guys finally came in. Unlikely I'll get a full 10 done by the month's end, given impending exams, but I should get half a dozen done up:
Posted up a review of this lot and a couple of other bits in my bog, the short version is that they're dead cheap, very good quality and excellent sculpts. For about a Euro a mini (though there is a €10 shipping charge for orders under about £50-ish) you can't go wrong!
Cheers all. Heading home today thankfully. Hasn't been the worst of stays but really looking forward to getting back to my own bed and wife and dog missed painting like you wouldn't believe!!! So much to do when I get home!!! Thx for all the kind comments folks

I had no idea you were sick and there I was pestering you with stupid PMs.
Glad you're okay, fella.
Not at all Buttery. Dakka has helped preserve some sanity over the last few days!!! Was only in for a few days in any case. Not so much sick as a bit battered. Got knocked over by a car on my way to work on Tuesday. Nothing broken but elbow and shoulder took a bit of a battering so was advised to stay in for a few nights and get lots of physio while here. Couldn't do any painting (though my awesome wife offered to bring in some paints and figs if I wanted) but did get some design and fluff work done. And watched a ton of painting vids and batreps on YouTube so kept my hand in. Lol.

Too soon fir a "if it'd been your painting arm, some folk here would be cheering?"
Heal up well, mate. I am glad they looked after you.
somehow I can't really motivate myself to work on this months object.
But there is still some time and I just should try to focus on it instead of
beeing distracted by other projects waiting for me.
>> damn warkopta!!! <<
well, I think I'm done with my entry...I'm fairly happy with it overall, although the flag I slapped together from a bit of plasticard is a bit of a bodge-job, I must admit ...and my cheap little camera and it's flash were less than kind ...anyway, I decided to just run with the theme that the gorkamorka "banna grot" model provided me with:
Rebel Grotz!..."Gretchin Revolutionary Committee"...hunkered down in a makeshift defensive position in the cliffs, fighting for their freedom from their overbearing former masters!

I;m pretty sure Jan could beat us with his other hand
Great work Zebo, that entry has come together really well. It will make a great display piece congrats
This are some YELLOW marines. I'm too gutless to take on that challenge, well done so far.
WIP of one of the contractors.
All of the 5 have the oranges done and all bases are at this stage and nearly done. The big Hunter mech is partly painted on my MEdge blog if anyone wants to see how the army will tie together.
Automatically Appended Next Post: CHALLENGE TIME: I'm actually painting up a bunch of Necron Warriors at the same time which I don't plan on using as a replacement for these, but I would have 10 models at the end of the month. They are by NO means linked so can't fathom a way to enter both squads. So I suppose I'm challenging all you creative lot to come up with a 40K/MEdge crossover story for me
(The in-joke for me is that I'm so tired with RL that I was knee-jerk going to enter them both because all my armies are fighting on the same planet - an old Necron Tombworld - for the "fabled prize", which means I can paint everything I have and stick it together with no questions asked ........... Unless they are from different games obviously )
I’m undecided if I should do the bonding studs in white or gold. Painted one of each to see how they looked. All my 40k ones are white, but I’m using gold as the major trim color for my 30k guys.
Mkay getting nervous - my order isn't in yet, so I'm going to go ahead and use this as my proof pic in case I don't get my other troops in in time!
Plus I totally forgot I was already working on a unit of ten, sometimes I'm forgetful like that although some may label these villains in their own minds they're definitely quite everyday - oh cheese!
So, here's my 2nd proof if you will.
It's a Greater Good Deep Strike Veteran Ranger Big Shas from Wargame Exclusive.
Is he still "unimportant" enough to fit the theme or is he too much?
Red__Thirst wrote: Better late than never. I wasn't sure I was going to have time to paint this month, but I'm going to try and fit in one mini before the 30th if I can.
Consider my hat tossed in, and here's the freshly prepped proof pic:
One Blood Angels tactical marine in Mark VII Power Armor.
Thanks and take it easy.
-Red__Thirst-
Re-posting this from the bottom of page 5, as I don't see my name or proof picture on the list of participants in the opening post. Is it too late to join in?
Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone's completed minis.
@BC - hahahaha - I'm sitting here quietly sipping my morning coffee and you just made me snort it out my nose! The base (minus the stained glass) is now built, textured and base sprayed. Hopefully get a start painting it this afternoon. Larks and the stained glass should get started on the weekend........he hopes
Hah. I'm not joking, I did them in 3-4 days for a tourney, and Milo's facial expression looks like Gaunt plays his pipes when the lights go out. It's very disturbing.
Also a friend dropped my Larks on the stone flags at WHW, so he's badly shredded down one side. >_<
ouch. Milo does have a bit of an odd expression anyway. Lark's googley eye freaks me a bit n'all. Dio is ready to go. Printed off a few propaganda posters to put and then deface on the outer wall too
I hit a problem with mine and got completely sidetracked for a while. Have managed to do the armour highlights on three of the guys though, so it's still doable.
it's all looking good so far. I'm kinda ticked as instead of painting (and choosing) my entry, I've gone and finished every tactical marine in my collection :( hopefully I can find something I have the drive to do for this month
I'd virtually finished R2D2, and I gave him a spray of Testor's Dullcoat, a spray mat varnish, as I have done with all my Imperial Assault miniatures before, without incident. This time, however, the varnish reacted with the paint, and it's now gone all powdery and even started to crack in places. It's absolutely ruined the paintjob, to the point where I'm going to have to strip it and start again, or buy another R2. I'd done a decent job on him too, and he was a really fiddly model to paint. I think he might be the only model I've ever painted using just a 000 brush! It's just crushing.

It's absolutely ruined the paintjob, to the point where I'm going to have to strip it and start again, or buy another R2. I'd done a decent job on him too, and he was a really fiddly model to paint. I think he might be the only model I've ever painted using just a 000 brush! It's just crushing.
Hold fire!!!!! Was it a humid day? Sounds like a reaction to the humidity. Happened to me (and others too). Try brush on Matt varnish over it and you may be able to salvage before stripping. Do a Google search there will be a lot on there about it.

Sorry to hear that, I hope TC^DCs advice works, there have been a few people on here with a similar issue that have managed to bring it back from what seemed like a bad place.
On a related note I made my own version of that model, it was good fun to create and paint
Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a go, but I can't see anything saving this. The paint has lost it's finish, the highlights deadened, but worse, the metallic paint on R2's dome has cracked quite badly. It looks like Agrellan Earth!
I think I'll go for a 2-pronged attack - try TP^DC's method, and pick up another R2 from my FLGS (it's only £8.99 for the R2 and C3P0 pack, so it's not the end of the world financially) and start again, with the mental attitude of "this time I'm going to do it even better."
And by the way, amazing conversion, Midget Gems! I laughed out loud when I clicked the spoiler. It makes sense of your post earlier in the thread, and cheered me up a bit on a dispiriting day.
Progress has been slow, partly due to me realizing that I should have started with the skin on these cultists instead of the clothing. Here's the latest WIP (not the best photo, I did it in a hurry):
Now I need to fix the clothing and then shade these guys, then highlight the skin and clothing and paint all the little fiddly details like the chaos stars, equipment pouches and belts. THEN I can add some blood to make them look like servants of Khorne!
Pretty much done with my entry, might go for some better pics at some point but here they are. 10 Freeguild Guard of House Von Grusse, flung through a Realmgate and stranded far from home!

lol I'm glad I was able to spread some fun around
Cool entry Para, its interesting to see you apply your grim dark magic to different models.
Jan, that Marble looks ridiculously good, so impressed right now. Looking forward to the rest of the model being finished
I've just been staring at my model for the last few days I really need to push forward with it and see what I can get done this weekend.
My first attempt at a scorched barrel. Not quite right, but I know what to do (and what not to do!) next time. Probably starting with a weapon with a longer barrel!

Jan, fancy sharing how you got that marble effect? It really does look amazing!
Time to start throwing theme suggestions at me for next month! Might be a bit before I get the poll up as I still have an exam to go on Monday, but it'll be done by Tuesday at the latest.
Does anyone else suffer from Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Completion Anxiety?
I've finished mine with 10 days to go, but for the last 20 days I've been all "argh, need to do more painting. Not going to have enough time!" (regardless of how much progress I've made or how close to completion I was). I like the idea of the horse power theme, but trying to get a vehicle finished might ruin me!
(Not belittling real anxiety, which is a serious issue for many).
Some good theme suggestions there! Hero I like, I don't think we've actually had that before, though Monster we definitely have. 'Horse Power' could be pretty cool, only thing I'd worry about is excluding people who don't have any vehicles or cavalry for whatever reason, or just don't want to paint them. Though it would give an excuse to crack on with my planned Undead Bretonnians....
I definitely want a vehicular one, but have if phrased so assault troops or cavalry or something smaller would be equally legitimate as an entry for those folks that don't like vehicles
kb_lock wrote: I definitely want a vehicular one, but have if phrased so assault troops or cavalry or something smaller would be equally legitimate as an entry for those folks that don't like vehicles
Maybe 'Who''s Faster?' or 'Outrun My Gun...' or even just 'Better Run....'.
Kustomer D wrote: How about something like: Horse Power - anything like a vehicle, cavalry n stuff?
^yes please!...I've got several vehicles that have just been sitting around in need of work for...several months, actually ...I think my meks needs a bit of a boot up the backside
though really, the sheer quantity, and variety of stuff in my "to do" pile is...kinda ridiculous...so whatever the theme ends up being, I'll have something that'll fit
Don't know if I will be able to finish this month. I recently learned that poison sumac doesn't look anything like poison ivy or poison oak the hard way.
King Pariah wrote: Don't know if I will be able to finish this month. I recently learned that poison sumac doesn't look anything like poison ivy or poison oak the hard way.
that bites :(
we got a stomach bug going around the family here, not getting anything done either, still, we'll see I guess. If I can get some energy back in the next couple of days I'll probably be all right
I sound like a broken record I know, but I'm struggling to get anything done thanks to being too tired after work all the time. It's a poor excuse perhaps, but it's true. I'd rather not paint if I'm tired because I'm likely to be sloppy and make mistakes that will cost me more time in the long run. I am going to try to soldier on tonight though.

No, mate, I think we all understand this. Maybe it would help to paint in a group? There's a few Google Hangouts happening on a couple of Facebook pages.
I'm not surprised you're happy with it! It looks amazing. How did you do the window, if you don't mind me asking?
After my disaster earlier in the thread, I went out and bought another R2D2 model the same, and I've now almost finished him again. I did a bit of basecoating yesterday, but it's virtually all been done today. My back hurts, my eyes are sore, and my jaw hurts from my habit of tightly clenching my teeth when painting. It's either them or my buttocks, I can't tell right now. C3P0 is finished, so I just need to do the last few bits on R2, and take some photos, and I can actually submit a finished model after all. I'm going to skip varnishing them this time...
As for next month, I kind of like the idea of something that's very open to interpretation, a single word or phrase to jump off. "Surprise" for example, or "Triumph." "Horsepower" is good, but it does seem specifically designed to push everyone towards painting a vehicle, which would be tricky for anyone without any vehicles to paint. Okay, I admit it - I just don't have any vehicles to paint, or any cavelry, and I'm not allowed to buy anything new at the moment. R2D2 mark 2 was only allowed as a special concession. Who is imposing these draconian rules on me you ask? Well, I am, once I realised I had 400 unpainted miniatures sitting in a pile of boxes next to my painting table. Whatever the theme is, I'm going to have to make one of them fit it, perhaps by thinking outside the box a bit.
I think the reason this post is a bit rambling and odd is because I've spent about eight hours today staring at an inch-high astromech droid. I think I should go to bed.
I have finally begun a little bit of work on mine:
Januine - damn it man, we should just reserve you a top 3 spot, the flooring is spectacular.
piratepizzadog - I love his Obelix trousers, brings back good memories of reading Asterix comics.
Kustomer D - that Tau looks like he might know what to do if the enemy get you close and personal. Decent rendition of the Tau scheme.
For next month, I really can't do vehicles, I'm just too slow to get one done in a month to a standard I'd deem acceptable. The lone Space Marine tank I've painted and several dreadnoughts have all taken at least two.
@sock - cheers fella. Love me a bit of marble Haven't done any marble since the Knight titan (whien I swore blindf I wouldnt be doing any again) but thought I'd have anoither go and see if I could polish up the technique a bit. Came out tidy enough
^nice!...there are often times where I wish I wasn't so dead-set on staying mono-Nurgle with my daemons/CSM...I'd love to paint some Tzeentch daemons - so many wonderful colours!
Almost there! Need to put some decals on these guys and then the formal photo shoot. I was hoping to get all 7 of the basic bolter boys done, but will probably have to settle for just these 4.
Hope it's not too late to enter - I did paint up a heavy bolter dude but it didn't come out so great - so instead i would like to enter this fella if I may!
And my entry is finished up and ready to show off. Take a look.
I was going for a 'ready to repel an assault' style pose, blade held out ready to parry the first blow while sending bolt shells into the charging foe. I'm very pleased with the result.
Best of luck to all other participants. Take it easy.
Nice Work finishing Nevelon, you consistently turn out good work.
Good work on your BA Red Thirst, looking very dynamic.
Quick WIP on mine since again I seem to be just staring at him hope he'll paint himself, I think I've been putting him off since I said to myself I'd try and wet blend the whole cloak/cape which is a little daunting.
Captain Baseballbat Boy's base colours and layers are pretty much done, needs highlights now and a few gaps touched up hopefully finish him over the weekend.
Had to move house configuration around so painting time was a bit off, got some paint done tonight, still some work but a wip shot of the snapfit servitor
So, finally getting around to posting these. Actually my 2nd choice, first one of some reaper lizardmen just wasn't clicking.
Piotr and Pushok, Warlord 28mm WW2
So, time constraints* mean I've only finished a couple of guys from the squad (and it's unlikely that any more will get done before Tuesday), so here's my Fire Warriors:
* - Also I find Fire Warriors the fiddliest, most annoying things to paint, so it really saps my will to make progress.
I finished my model a few days ago, however the poor snotling had a bit of an accident. Our cleaner didn't see him and accidently knocked him on the floor and stood on him. I'm not sure I'll have time to patch him and certainly not time to strip him and start him over so I'll have to enter him damaged. If I get time to touch up the damage I will but some of the metal has been bent/flattened and detail lost.
A few months ago my entry was this...
Spoiler:
If anyone was wondering what came next... this is what happened to the last blood angel dreadnaught he faced. Mushroom power!
@Jadenim: Fire warriors are fiddly, but to me they are a lot of fun to paint, and the end result is some of the coolest infantry in the game! Yours look pretty awesome btw.
@Moolet: Love the dio with the grot that survived the cleaner! I might not have noticed the damage if you hadn't said anything.
ZergSmasher wrote: @Jadenim: Fire warriors are fiddly, but to me they are a lot of fun to paint, and the end result is some of the coolest infantry in the game! Yours look pretty awesome btw.
Don't get me wrong, I love the way they look when finished, sleek and deadly, it's just such a journey getting there! Part of it is the poor moulding on the original sprues; I've got a squad of the new breachers in the wings and I'm hoping that the new cuts will make it easier.
Right then - He's done. One of my favourite characters - Hlaine Mad-as-Feth' Larkin!
No more fiddling about!! I will make a standard game base at some point as he is removeable from the vig. But for now here's the finished fella. Hope y'like him
@Januine - OH COME ON!!! ...look, I don't know how, but I'm convinced you're cheating! that looks too darn good man ...seriously though, great work, love it!
Lol. Thx ZoBo. Really am happy with the finished piece. Took a bit of time (not as much as the last one but still) but was a fun build and paint fstf. Still have 4 more 'ghosts' to think up vigs for. Larks was the easy one
@Jan: man, I got no other words for this than just another awesome piece you delivered here.
Your work is absolutly amazing - from start to finish.
Just love it!

You might want to wait until the last day before you crush our hopes and dreams...!
I've done alot this month.
I did nothing with the dark angel chapter.
I built my drop pod and got it all painted. Pia to assemble but it's fully built and painted.
Got not just 8, but 22 fenrisian wolves and 1 cyberwolf. Also decided to do 3 thunder wolf calvary that I had as well.
Got not just 2 tirmagonts(sp) but 12 of them painted.
Then did 2 aegis defense lines w quad guns.
And assembled and painted a pair of knight gallants.
And broke the leg off my metal voltron. I've had since the 80s.. all in all a productive month.. I'll get the photos up tomarrow in the daylight of the then I did for this month's challenge and post pics of the others in my modeling blog for the chapter as well tomarrow.
Again nothing based yet until I've got a whole flanking force or the whole Lance or 'nid swarm put to gether. As far as my da goes. I'm transferring 5th company to 4th company as I already painted their shoulders all in green shoulder plate rims.
Good gods Jan that is an awesome piece, much love to Mad Larks. I think for me this is one of your best pieces so far and you've managed all this even after being run over a few weeks ago, there seems to be no stopping you.
It has made me to look more closely at your blog and I defiantly feel inspired to give painting marble a go sometime in the future.
My final entry, he came together quite well, a few things I learnt I. I should have been more bold with the colours on the cape when blending them and to paint the baseballs before I glue them down, they were a complete arse to paint because I couldn't get the right angles to paint the seams and stitching. Altogether I'm happy, the Bat turned out quite well, the grain effect is better on the back that the front and it has made me want to play Max Payne again to relive my childhood
Cheers MidgetGems. Marble is actually a lot of fun to do. Just enjoy it and make sure to do it wet-in-wet to get those nice stone pattens.
Loving Capt. BBB the ork. Top entry there. Now I wanna go back and paly some Max Payne too. Awesome game
Proof and completed piece,, nice entries this month and looking forward to the rest as well as next months pieces . I will be changing chapters for next months and doing a space wolves wolf lord conversion.. this time i will be uploading pices to my gallery as i go .
Finished: Dedicated to enforcement of the LEX IMPERIALUS, the men and women of the Adeptus Arbites tirelessly work as judge, jury and executioner. (54mm =I= Barbaretta) - Rest of pics under spoiler. The pose was so wonky that I eventually gave up trying to get her face and body in focus and resorted to the "hand hold". :(
wow Jan, jaw dropping as usual
Midget Gems lmao that's a great idea! Love and will probably be stealing it
Finished my Giant Rats and (tried) to take good pics:
I should probably note, they're not affixed to their bases, after I did those I decided I didn't really like how the bases came out and so I'm currently in the process of rebasing them all onto hex bases.
Mine's finished (I've now painted R2D2 twice, after a disaster - see earlier in the thread for details) but I'm not happy with the photos I took, so I'm going to have another go at taking some pics this evening. Hopefully I'll upload the results tonight.
Here's my finished entry, "Ork Tankbusta w/ Panzerfaust & Can Opener". I still have to figure out the photography bit, but I'm pretty glad w/ the way the Panzerfaust and the paint job turned out. Now I'm just 1 Tankbusta away from having a squad!
Some good entries so far by those who have finished! As for mine, I'm done except for basing and some blood on their weapons, so I will indeed be finishing this month. Not a moment too soon, either, it appears.
the detail of my little Gobbo shows up much better with the base coats on...
i have finished him since taking these first WIP pics, and took my final pics, only to find that some paint got rubbed off of his nose yesterday while he was being passed around at the annual Memorial Day weekend convention...
grrrr!!!
i'll get him fixed tonight, and take new pics in the morning...
he does look ok in the wide shot...
here is a scale shot vs. the last two Marines i painted...
uh, can I change my final pics?...I wasn't overly happy with them, the flash was way too harsh...these ones still aren't perfect mind, but an improvement's an improvement ...looks a bit closer to real-life anyway

@feltmonkey - hey glad to see you still got yours done after that varnish malfunction mate...I think the second R2 was worth it, they look great
Pretty happy with the overall scheme. Think the metals have come out a bit brighter than I wanted them to and the weapon haven't gone quite the way I envisaged, but otherwise I like it.
I tried to edit the photos this time to make things look a bit cooler. I changed up the location i took the photos too. The first photo is the one i liked the best, but use whichever one looks best for the challenge photo.
"Who you calling big nose, Bignose?"
Monty "The Runt" Python - Goblin Loony
here is Griblet "Bignose" Ballgrabber, the toe stomping, shin kicking, knee biting, ball grabbing rising star of the Marienburg Muckers...
this was a limited edition run of 125 copies made by Steve Buddle, for his (sadly now defunct) company, Spyglass Miniatures...
he does a nice job on Greenskins, as the AoS Brutes he recently sculpted at GW, and this guy, show...
i had a lot of fun working on this little dude, using P3 Wurm Green for the first time, as well as experimenting with using P3 Murderous Magenta to shade the green...
the Elven Bloodbowl helmet is a carved up Space Marine helmet, which turned out pretty cool looking...
i tried the Mourn Mountain Snow paste from the Citadel Technical range for the first time...
it goes on nice and thick, which will make a nice base for building up deep snow...
unfortunately, it dries very grey, and looks like standard house spackle...
i hit it with a thin layer of white paint, and it looks much more like a chalk line than the initial try did...
anyway, i hope you like him...
now on to the votes...
it's gonna be a tough one again this month...
