Hope this hasn't already been posted....

From:
http://uk.games-workshop.com/forums/

<h4 class="style1">Games Workshop
Forums Announcement </h4>

Games Workshop forums will be closing on Wednesday November 15. Over the last few years there has been an explosion in the number and variety of forums devoted to the Games Workshop Hobby. These range from the huge forums covering the whole Hobby to small, focussed boards dedicated to a single army. If you want to meet and chat with other hobbyists online, we recommend that you check out a variety of these forums to find one (or more!) that suits your needs. A huge selection can be found by using any of the big internet search engines. We recommend typing in the name of your favourite game (40k, WH etc), army (Eldar, Empire etc) or aspect of the hobby (GW gaming, GW painting etc) and apend 'forum' to the end.

We'd like to say a big thank-you to all the people who have posted on (or even just read) our forums and our special thanks go to all the volunteers who over the years have helped moderate our forums. If you need personal hobby advice, please call our hobby advisors on 0115 91 40000 or visit your nearest Games Workshop store.

Not a bad move by them to save money. Anything worthwhile that could come out of those forums could come from elsewhere. Now we just have to worry about the influx of 14 year olds.

It's probably such old forum software that no one wants to deal with it. They should've moved to a newer system years ago, when it wouldn't have been so painful.

Also, in classic GW style, they fubar'ed the announcement by posting it to a stickied thread BEFORE telling their own moderators. So mods were saying, "Where did you hear this?" as they found out the news themselves.

GW's retreat from the web has been fascinating. A few years back the US store was 'upgraded' and lost a lot of the higher-quality pictures of individual sprues and parts that was really useful. The Specialist Games forum has been a weird side-forum using phpBB or similar.

It took years to get army tags for the forum... How long can it take to get tiny 1 bit icons of the army symbols made?

Over the last year a couple sub-frums have been removed or repurposed.

I'm guessing they will soon stop selling bitz online and can Black Gobbo and the like.

I wonder if this is another case of GW being run as a collection of people instead of a proper company, and the one guy that maintained the back-end of the forums left, so they're shutting the whole thing down?

What are they thinking?

They are thinking, "If we close our forums, we save money by using the bandwidth for something else, we don't have to put up with importunate adolescents, and we can pretend that we just don't know about rules conflicts because no one brought them to our attention."

I think it's a genius move. I'm sure the logic is that if you have some of your bandwidth devoted to online sales and some devoted to your forum, removing the forum will mean that all of your bandwidth will be used for online sales, and you'll sell more.

Brilliant!

With GW I keep getting this "last one out shut off the lights" feeling from them.

I think Ed has it dead on, every new business decision seems more and more like the kind that get made when a company is in a death spiral. Are we witnessing GW swirling around the drain? All I know is the last two fiscal years have been pretty dismal...

It seems that way, but look at their stocks. Not doing to badly there. it may be a bouncing dead cat, but it seems a decent rebound.

I think they will pull through, this is just a way to yank:

a) A thing that is done far better eslwhere in a lot of different places. We wont have to worry about the crying little "Noo0Bz!!1!" as the will just have to get straight or get out. It saves alot of IT money too.

b) bad mouthing GW on their own site. It keeps people who own stock from visiting them and seeing their own forums rife with GW slander. (which is very apparent, why do you think they closed down the white dwarf forums? They served their purpose and they didnt like the results&gt

So they can comfortably shut their eyes to whatever is going on and claim ignorance to outside feedback.

This just strengthens what people need to do anyways. Write them well thought out letters to their office. Not crying like a 6 year old on a forum.

With GW I keep getting this "last one out shut off the lights" feeling from them.
Either that, or as HF was suggesting, they're just much more interested in climbing back into their echo chamber rather than deal with (and pay for) the prattling complaints of the hoi-palloi that happen to be their customers,. If this is the case, then it's really too bad. Things like COD (and the building sets), the 'three-for-the-price-of-one' limited boxed sets (War Walkers, Piranha), and bringing the Harlequin back show that GW still has the ability to do what they've done best and respond to customer demands.. And while I would'na want to deal with some of the fan stuff out there (Revile the Pan-Fo!), it does strike me as odd that a company would want to cut itself off from its consumers in this way.

Of course, it could just be a cost-cutting move that they feel is justified by their own market saturation.

I'm sure it was a tough decision but I can understand why they did it. My company has wrestled with the forum question and always decided not to do them. They can be a great benefit but are costly, time consuming, and have lots of negatives especially when 'official'. Considering the GW community on the Web I can see why they'd want to ditch it.

Of course what GW SHOULD have is a questions and answer forum but considering how they seem to be reacting to FAQs and the like theses days that is certainly not going to happen. And, as others have said, presumably they'll still respond to direct emails. In my limited experience email response has been excellent but I've never sent a rules question.

I think its stupid of GW and a mistake instead of putting in the time and turning their Forums around they just ditch and run, forgetting that most of those forum goers are their supposed target customers, little Billie, little Danny and Tiny Tim who no longer have somewhere to go and cry my Marines THE Greatest!!!!!!!!! and have everyone and their younger brother agree. Instead they have us and Warseer and the SGs forum and others where their mostly gonna get the cynical old Vets and disalusioned specialist games player who already felt the boot of an uncarring GW for far too long.
But hey since I really wish GW all the worst at this point thats okay if they keep right on making dumb choices like this, another few years and  I can watch them finish their death spiral down the drain.

GW

Customer feedback is the lifeblood of a hobby-based company like this.  Without a forum or a letters page in WD customers will vote with their wallets and by then it's too late.

My previous company set up forums, games, courted fan sites and did everything they could to encourge fan commitment and participation.  GW is running from their fan base.

...the 'three-for-the-price-of-one' limited boxed sets (War Walkers, Piranha)....

If you are writing about Warwalker and Piranha sets, I think you are rather referring to the "three-for-the-price-of-three" special offer. Anyway, it still better than their regular "one-for-the-price-of-two" offer.

...Back on topic, I think that GW proves every day how outdated their mindset is regarding their own customer base. Can they really hope to sell plastic toys to 12-years old and pretend they don't know what Internet is?

Of course, if they shutdown their long-outdated forums (the only valid reason being out of sheer shame for the lack of features of their software) it can't do any good. The Eye of Terror will spread around, but I'm sure the hordes of fanboys ending in every corner of W40K forum galaxy won't find an environment as supportive and GW-friendly as they were accustomed to. I mean, a typical GW fanboy posting "as he used to do on GW forums" but on Dakka instead, will be down in flames in seconds.

And some of them may even discover a level of discontent they might have been unaware of while posting there.

Their forums were pretty bad.

It's not like they can "ignore" feedback. If they cared about feedback they'll just read the fan forums like they already do, just not visibly to the rest of us.

Brimstone at Warseer is a GW employee and is the guy who gives out rumors. Many GW employees read fan forums and I'm sure the Dev team isn't going to be deaf to what the fans are saying.

I'd be more upset if their forums weren't so bad. After finding Dakka and Warseer I haven't gone back.

An Enron would be harder to do in the UK - just as it would be harder to do post Sarbanes-Oxley in the US.  Sadly accounting regulations don't allow to just conveniently ignore a multibilion debt anymore.

Or maybe GW has just caught on that the whole web 2.0 phenomenon is BS, and that setting up forums for customers to rant like morons was a waste of money. I'm guessing that they decided to go back to getting feedback from redshirts and roolzboys instead of trying to make sense out of tens of thousands of awful forum postings. The Eye of Terror has always been a mess of random posts by people who are barely literate, and not wasting money entertaining them is a pretty sound business move in my opinion.

http://us.games-workshop.com/membership/eshare.pl?do=ShowArticle&BoardID=4&ID=5374277

Hi I've been playing GW games and using various forums since 2000, created and moded a few of my own along the way. I wanted to suggest some options for people looking for new homes.

Dakka Dakka
http://dakkadakka.com/Forums/tabid/56/Default.aspx
is a long-running community with several golden demon winners who post on modeling and GT winners who post on tactics. It has good moderators and a good sense of humor.

The Miniatures Page
http://theminiaturespage.com/
is devoted to all minis, historical, sci-fi and fantasy. If you want to know about some of the great stuff out there TMP is the place.

Work in progress
http://s11.invisionfree.com/Work_In_Progress/index.php?act=idx
is a converter's heaven filled with people building superheavy tanks, titians, fliers and fully converted armies.

The Warmongers Club
http://p076.ezboard.com/bwarmongerboard
Is my old club from NYC, several members have won GTs or GDs and they have good advice.

Sorry to hear the forums are closing but hopefully people will find new places to post.

I think this is great news for Dakka.  Somebody was posting a few weeks ago asking about declining activity on the boards here, and an influx of new blood might help.  We can clearly deal with trolls and newbs.

While it might get aggravating fora  few of the vets to answer questions answered earlier, think of it as a way to engage all the guys who've been on the boards a few months.  They can be the new vets for dealing with newbs.  It's the old usenet cycle of life.

Shall I duck and cover, or wait for the bombs to fall?

Seriously though, I don't think the acidity that Dakka can often have will encourage anyone to stay around, save for the hardcore idiots and the long-term disciples. I doubt Dakka will see that large an influx of refugees.

Trust you lot to do a 5 page thread on something interesting as soon as I leave for the pub...

I think we'll do alright. Dakka's got a pretty established culture, we'll pick up a bunch and any who don't really fit will move on to other boards.

Warseer Hit with Torent of Retardation I feel terribly sorry for the 'seer mods that are going to have to deal with that avalanche of stupidity...

Warseer was already home to a torrent of retardation...At least in regards to following the rules and whining about stuff.

I admit I post over on warseer as well as here. Warseer does have some crap topics, but no forum is perfect and I do find they have still have some interesting topics now and again. I do have to say the influx of GW forum newbies over there is a little alarming. Hopefully they wont be totally swarmed and overrun.

I don't think the scary newbies will last at the established sites. There will be some decent ones that remain, but many of the BLAH BLAH ROXXXs will be quickly shuffled out or lose interest. The ones that do remain will be beneficial overall. Further, it will be enjoyable to smack the BLAH BLAH ROXX crowd around when they start using that language. I see a new coffee break pastime?

I can be counted amongst those number myself. in defence of warseer, they not only have great rumour mills but alot of the content is pretty good too. Granted there is the noise ratio, but everyboard with a decent population has that. Just ignore those post(s/ers) and move on. its pretty easy to avoid the stupidity there.

Of course, if you're NOT really a man, then you don't even have to be yelled at at B&C.

I can't say anything about the rest of Warseer, but I head there daily to check out the Project Logs and the general modeling section.  Some real high quality work there, with impressively regular updates a lot of the time.  The modeling here on Dakka is great too, but more good stuff to check out is always a good thing.

Mom, dad? There's something I've been wanting to tell you. See, the kids in my class, not me mind you, but some of the kids in my class would wish that you would put some pants on.

The district also feels that when you constantly turn a fire hose on us while forcing us to recite the gettysburg address is not actually in the curriculum. Killing hobos living at the train yard is also not valid for recieving extra credit.

Just FYI.

About my post: I edited it a few times and still didn't get it right. What I meant was not that Warseer itself was slowed, it's that there are plenty of crap posts in there that are similar to GW forum's posts. So if you consider that slowed, Warseer's similarly slowed. Warseer has the rumor board, which is a plus. I use Warseer myself and love the rumor mill when there aren't 50 questions, instead of answers, in there.

Apparently, someone here also has a diaper fetish.

A big influx of new, stupid people will be great. Next time I log in, I want this place to be swarming with a pack of 13-year-old, pudgy, mouthbreathing, dandruff-bearers still locked in a futile wrestle with punctuation and the concept of deoderant. I want to see a hundred user names that start with "Dark" and use "i" and "y" as if they were somehow interchangable. I want to see a screaming tornado of tears in the 40K army lists section when some nobody claims that his all-veterans close combat Ultramarine army is theoretically invincible, as proven by mathematical fact and that game that he played with his preteen sister. I want to be called "d00d". I want some tiresome wet fart of a man to start a seven page thread on who would win: The Emperor or The X-Men? I want nothing less than a forum flushed with fanboy drivel and circular ego-stroking wankfests because when the forum hits rock bottom, nobody will care when somebody suckerpunches and rapes a newbie in the manner they deserve.

Look at it this way. We can be (reasonably) mean to them and get away with it, because we can argue it's Dakka's immune response .

I'm sure we'll pick up some decent folks or at least be able to teach a few to be better. Most of them will go to warseer anyway.

What FAQ's and errata? Our rules are perfect and our figures are the Porsche's of the miniature world! No need to have some terribly expensive and dificult to maintain pesky forum where our customers can grovel and praise us, we want you to put your money where your mouth was and show your appreciaction by buying more More MORE!  You DO need a new (insert latest release here) army, don't you? YES! YOU DO! Sales are slumping, and nobody knows why...

GW is truly the Porsche of the miniature world:

Even the most basic models are expensive
Addons are expensive.
Tremendous performance, but laws usually prohibit using it to its full potential.
Commonly displayed, but not driven, due to unsuitability for every-day usage.
