Awesome Beastmen!

Like the Chieftain dude too, the sword-swap works well.

Post by: Wehrkind

That chieftain is really nice! I'd be quite proud to have him running with my WoC lads
I think you did just the right amount of little cuts and bruising too. I think just a few is perfect to suggest the rough look, but any more and it gets lost in too much detail. I am not sure if that is a function of the scale where too much detail gets too busy to take in, or some ingrained human tendency to over-estimate wounds and bruises. All of the artwork I have seen involving banged up fighters seem to have a lot fewer marks on their bodies than I remember later on.

Also, Rainbow Birdman there is really cool

@ Gits @ Dr H - Thank you Gits, Dr H, nice to see you still hanging around here!

@Aku-chen - Quite simple, but I think it works well too!

@ Wehrkind - Thank you, I think you are entirely right, I think a large part is due to scale, like you say, its simply not feasible to paint tiny scratches from bushed etc, so that even the smallast lines i can make with a crush represent quite considerable wounds! if you over do it I think it becomes too much because by rights they should be dead from blood loss!

@Rustproof - Cheers.

So although i quite liked the rainbow tzaangor it wasnt quite working for me, and then I had an idea, I was thinking how cool they would look painted like albinos, obviously different, but not over the top bright blue! So I have been practising my plale flesh on more of these savage orks, it gives a really different feel to these guys, will have to remember this for the future, albino orks look very intimidating! Sorry, the colours are a bit off on these, I took them in a hurry.

On a different note my local GW is running a halloween themed painting competition and to get me to work to a deadline Im going to try and enter. My entry is going to be a fresh member of this beastman warband, but to make him more haloween like i will likely add pumpkins etc to the base, personally i think he looks absolutely terrifying!

Very nice! I love the work on the Halloween guy; that mask is just fantastic.

I really like the orcs too. Seeing them in pale flesh like that, it makes me realize just how similar the faces are to the vampire counts ghouls' faces. Scaled up and with a bigger jaw, but otherwise really similar. Huh...

Post by: J-paint

@Wehrkind - Thanks! Its true, they are incredibly similar really arent they! I imagine as a sculptor if you find a winning recipe for faces it will be quite hard to not accidentally incorporate some of the same aspects.

@Evildrcheese / RiTides - Hope you like him with paint too!

@Gits - Thank you, yeah I find with pale flesh it can be really easy to go massively overboard if you are not careful.

Before I start guys, I have joined twitter, I am aiming to use this to do small updates, if you are interested come follow me:

https://twitter.com/JPMiniatures

So then guys, Just in time for halloween, and my local Games Workshop (Norwich) painting competition, here is my halloween themed gor! Replete with greenstuff pumpkins! I honestly had a fantastic time doing the base, I think woodland bases may be my new thing.

There is a reason I have been so slow to make this update...well, actually there are two, number one I was getting the shiny new watermark you can see on these photos made, and two, I was massively distracted chopping and sticking in something of a converting mania.

I don't know about you guys, but I think these are some of the best conversions concept wise I have ever had! Really really pleased with them! This whole feral army theme, with little else in the way of restrictions is absolutely fanatastic fun. Here are some of the results:

1) My first feral animated woodland construct thing, animated by a suitably crazy brayshaman in my mind! As you can tell, based mostly on a Kunnoth hunter, but with lots of grisly bone bits. The ''heart'' or whatever they are called has been replaced with a load of trophies and charms. Here he is with a bow:

And seeing as how if I ever played a game with them the most logical thing for them to prozy as would be minotaurs, here he with alternative arms and a big axe! Honestly so excited to paint him!

2) Now after I came up with the idea that this guy was designed and twisted and stitchted together by a suitably insane bray shaman, I knew I had to make him, plus I knew he had to look suitably wild! here he is. The skaven skull is a deliberate inclusion, the hobby butterfly will doubtless want to add some sneaky skaven to this rag tag bunch at some point.

3)Next up is a couple of ungors, and i must admit the stock poses are a bit rubbish and dated, so I have been making a bit of a more sophisticated ungor, after all, since the end times they have had thousands of years to gather some better clothing, this first one is still very WIP:

4) This second one came about when I thought about the idea of female beastmen, femgors if you will...... i figured small dainty archers mixed in with the ungors would be pretty neat and an awesome converting opportunity, again, very WIP:

5) To finish, I plan on painting this guy like an old gor with grey hair, just because:

I'd really love to hear how (maybe on the society page) you did the cuts and bruises on, as paradigm called him, grimdark Tarzan, and a bit about how you got that great textured look on the hooves. I won't hold my breath for the secret of your outrageously smooth blending

@IGtR - Thanks, shame they are all so time consuming as well!

@Lecacty - Hahah, thanks!

@Two Spartan - Thanks for the feedback, I can see where you are coming from with the elf arms, I might bulk them up a tiny bit more before I call them finished, depends how impatient i get to add paint!

@Wehrkind - Hahah i would hope there aren't too many people who beastmen do it for! But questionable kinks aside, thank you!

@Evildrcheese - Fingers crossed I can live up to the hype!

@ Elnibbus - You are alive! Don't waste your time on this rubbish blog, we want to see updates!

@ Nerd - Hes becoming a lurker, its a slippery slope.

@Heretic Tom - Thank you very much! I would absolutely love to do a little bit for the society page, I will try and do it properly though, with step by step instructions! As with everything I do it will take a little while, so dont hold your breath, but I hereby commit to do mini tutorials on both!

@Angelofvengeance - Thank you! im excited to paint him!

@Freytag93 - Hahahahah this is some high praise! I hope this post lives up to your expectations! I am indeed working on them, but as any of my long term followers will tell you, progress is glacial around here!

Wow, so these guys are clearly going down well! I have spent the time since my last post slowly adding some paint to my minotaur construct, I had real fun trying out all the different textures on him, the bird beak and mushrooms in particular! The other texture I included on this guy was I coated all the wood areas with the textured GW cracking paints, personally I think it gives a fantastic depth to these parts and works really well as bark, its an idea I will probably be using again.
I have gone for quite a natural scheme with lots of bone, I imagine the brayshamans contorting and twisting it into shape with dark magic before linking it with that odd sinew-like brown wood flesh.
As you can probably tell he is not quite finished, he still needs to be based and I am holding off for now, I really want the basing on these guys to be something special so I have been stock-piling supplies and practising.
A quick question for you all, for the axe version of this guy, should he have some globules of blood and gore hanging from the head of the axe like the halloween project? Would this make it even more sinister or would it be a tad over the top?

And with bow instead:

And my favourites bits:
Its only when you see it like this that I realise I rushed the glow on the eye socket of the bird....will need to tidy that up.

That is crazy, brilliant and fantastically painted! I feel some blood would work on the axe just to add a splash of colour on an otherwise quite two-tone model.

@Elnibbus - Its a good idea, I'm swaying in that direction myself.

@Mastiff - Welcome! And thank you.

@IGtR - Erring on the side of caution is always wise.

@Rawson - Rawson! Fantastic to see you! Thought you had dropped off the face of the earth! And of course, madness like that seems to be my trademark lately, an obsession with spending an insane amount of time on grunts.

Just a quick update for you guys tonight, I have painted up the oldschool beastman from my converting frenzy, Im really happy to have him finished, as this was the first set of warhammer miniatures I ever owned, and although the old (blue) paintjob held nostalgia for me, this way he looks far better!

@ Nerd - Thank you Damo, as always, such high praise from you means alot!

@EDC - Ill retake the picture once they are all based.

@ Wehrkind - Please do! steal away!

@ Freytag93 - Hahah ah yes, the blood dilema, you may be right, I will try it out on a spare axe, got to check it will look convincing.

So just a small update for you today, another tzaangor from the silver tower joins the group, I wasnt very happy with the scheme on the last one so I have gone for something a bit more outlandish this time. The eyes creep me out a bit on this guy.

I have to say I'm very proud of the base, almost had more fun doing that than the rest of the model, maybe a sign I should start dabbling with scenery projects more.

Lovely work as always J, weirdly the thing that caught my attention was the arrow! I'm so used to seeing them painted as some kind of flame, repurposing it as a mean, jagged piece of metal was a brilliant idea.

Post by: J-paint

@Elnibbus -thanks sir!

@Dr H - I'll suggest it to her, when she has put the bow down.

@Paradigm - Thanks para! I must admit I didn't really have an image when i painted it like that, just thought of it as dark and a bit menacing, I think i thought more of it as some sort of black smoke effect, but you are right, a jagged metal barb is a far more grim-dark idea!

@Gits- Thank you! I was inspired by the film Brave, her hair is a similarly mind numbingly bright.

So I havnt been idle over christmas guys, in fact I have two finished models for you, you lucky lucky people.

The first is the converted skaven assassin from the silver tower set, I tried to paint him to a decent standard but speed was really my priority here, hope it doesnt show too much!

Second up is a bray shaman for my beastmen collection, someone had to be responsible for that undead minotaur afterall...

I tried to improve my technique for painting cloth here, i think it kind of worked, but will need a bit more refining.

J-paint's combined thread. - Pink horrors @ 2016/12/28 14:28:20

Post by: Elnibbus

Seriously nice minis there mate: speed-painting is not how i would have imagined the Skaven being painted. You've got a very good skintone on that rat: almost albino-esque. I like the knuckles as they have a sore looking quality, like he's been digging or fighting.

My favourite part of the bray shaman is the cloak. Wonderful collection of colours which look like a mix of skins and cloth.

J-paint's combined thread. - Pink horrors @ 2016/12/28 14:38:12

Post by: J-paint

Thanks Elnibbus, it was really simple, the skaven flesh is just a white basecoat, then three carefully applied layers of flesh wash, reikland fleshshade, before picking out details like the face, eyes etc. The knuckles are my favourite bit of him too, although the pustules are a bit too well painted for my liking, made me feel quite unwell doing it. Not sure a nurgle army would be my thing.

J-paint's combined thread. - Pink horrors @ 2016/12/28 16:36:52

Post by: Elnibbus

Yes the pustules do look convincingly gross!

Fanmazingly brillstanding! love that skaven! like mentioned that skin tone is really really good, what colours are the basis for that tone? :-)

J-paint's combined thread. - Pink horrors @ 2016/12/29 09:57:50

Post by: J-paint

As I said to elnibbus it was surprisingly simple! It was just a pure white undercoat followed by three thin layers of reikland flesh shade, with a tiny bit of touching up edges with pallid witch flesh, but that could have been avoided too if I'd been more careful with the wash.

Hullo dakka, so I have been very naughty, neglecting posting on here since christmas, and favouring all the other social media sites instead, I have been suitably reprimanded by Nerdfest and am here to make it up to you all, the only thing I can give you, other than my apologies is a deluge of pictures, so here we go:

First some more beastmen:

Next is a lighthearted village idiot from hasslefree:

Then we have some more of the minotaur constructs I showed a page or two ago, together with their brayshaman who summoned/made them:

Forgive the odd edges on these images, not quite sure what happened there:

Then we get to some tzeentch stuff, to whet your appetites, some more tzaangors, and cultists:

And that brings you up to date with my most recent project, O'ot, owl of change, this is the concept i had, followed by the progress so far, its exciting stuff! Probably the largest thing ive ever painted and easily the most ambitious.

So, all caught up, now hopefully Nerdy wont have to murder me.

Awesome everything, love that Tizz scheme - I do lots of brown + white + dark metal for my own chaos dudes too, though not remotely as well as you

Superb painting Jpaint. The purple fellow is some of your best painting in my eyes!! Also the druidy type fellows with the glowing green stones. I LOVE your choice of colors on all these models. Very inspired work!

@ Dr H - Thank you

@KernelTerror- Thanks, Im going for a more creepy vibe than i have in the past, darker is the aim.

@ IGtR - Thank you, its a glorified kitbash really its the first example of me having an idea in my head that i tried to match with bits, rather than making an idea by randomly combining parts till i find something that looks cool.

@Nerd - Thanks nerdy, as i said on facebook, I followed your advice for the painting almost to the letter and im so glad i did, he is turning out really nicely, as for the lighter skintones, if you mean the off white ones they are based around pallid witch flesh, lightly washed with sepia and then rehighlighted with PWF, before some subtle work with pink and purple glazes to give them a bit of depth, the cuts etc are just BFTBG, god I love that stuff.

@Valhalla - Dont put yourself down! your work is incredibly good, and its all about practice, im constantly amazed by how much you can improve over just a few years.

@EDC - Thanks, was going for a sunless creepy look as if they spent all their time in libraries and shaded woods, i think it works!

@Gits, consider myself scolded. apologies, hopefully the paint update helps redeem me.

@Moltar - Thank you! Its really just sticking bits together but the overall effect is pretty fun!

@Boss salvage - Thanks, i think a far more muted schemes works so well for chaos, gives them that earthy dark feel, I am indeed on instagram, if you havnt already found me there is a link in my signature.

@Aku-chan - Hahahah maybe i will make a head not make out of GW parts to cast and sell.

@Warboss - Thanks, hope it doesn't disappoint.

@Bebop - Thank you bebop, I wont lie, the village idiot guy was very much inspired by watching your work over the years, I really wanted to try and imitate the way of painting cloth you managed on that confessor model a while ago, im not sure my offering is as good as yours, but i still think its technically some of the best painting I have done.

@San -Thank you very much San!

So I have an update for you guys, delayed, but nothing compared to the length of time it sometimes takes me to update this blog, again, you have Nerdfest to thank for the good natured prodding.

So this is the state of paint on O'ot as of this morning, I think he is going rather well, going with the same muted colour scheeme with just touches of bright tzeentch colours.

The wings are the main area that i havnt even touched yet, they are going to be rather time consuming I reckon.

Of course he is nowhere near finished, but I will keep you updated, If i get him finished I may even take him along to warhammer fest for golden demon in a couple of weekends, he has no chance of winning anything but I guess it would be good to have tried to enter.

Wow. Thank you. I consider that high praise indeed. I am happy with how my painting has improved, but there's always room for improvement aND looking at stuff like yours helps motivate me.

So I have taken a bit of a break from Oot, but hope to get back to him fairly soon, in the mean time i have only had small hobby slots, so have been doing some quick experiments. I bought a cheap coffee blender and have been using it to blend spices to use as cheap basing alternatives, here are the results, I think they look pretty good, and when combined with other techniques will look even better still.

Anyway i thought you guys might enjoy this as an idea:

Those make for some seriously realistic looking grassland!

Bet your mini's smell lovely too

My concern would be if they'll fade or discolour with age, being organic. Had any thoughts on that or how to prevent it?

I want to smell your bases.

Post by: J-paint

@ San - not yetm thats one of the nice things about them though, they barely need it. maybe just a wash and varnish to limit the smell

@ Possumcraft - Thanks, I have tried with just a light dusting of satin varnish and that is pretty good at entombing the smell as well, you honestly wouldn't know to sniff them (however weird that would look) and as for the discolouration I have thought about it, I very much doubt it will be an issue, these spices are already dried for exactly this reason to help preserve them, and with the varnish I think they will be pretty robust, I know people who commonly use seamoss to make scale trees and they havn't had issues with discolouration over the span of decades, but ill leave them in a warm humid place and let you know in a couple of years

@Whalemusic - I think in combination with other things at least, something to add to the arsenal as it were.

@Heretic Tom - hahah, I'll take that at face value and ignore the creepy undertones

So just a small update today, been working on the base for Oot, which i have to say I have enjoyed alot more than Oot himself, it sounds strange but I am struggling on such a large scale, I keep finding my hands get in the way and the painting chipping off and the task of keeping the same level of detail on such large spaces is exhausting, i'm not happy with him but I will probably call him done tomorrow regardless so I can move on to something I can get a bit more enthused about.

Hi all, I have pushed on and got O'ot finished, I think he has come out reasonably well, he sure is creepy, but the technical painting is a bit hit and miss, i compromised on quality for the sheer size of him, anyway, gorge on some pictures:

Absolutely stunning mate! that first image looks so good, it's like an illustration from some weird fantasy book! just has so much to take in and explore and the balance between all the parts is spot on perfectly executed, the tiny hint of red with the bloody fingers and the frame of icy blue works wonderfully, it all puts me in mind of something i'd expect from a cross between Pan's Labyrinth and The dark crystal. you are an exceptional hobbyist and an inspiration to all of us, thanks for everything you show us!

Amazing blog man, love those minotaur constructs and pretty much everything else as well.

O'ot is badass. I didn't like it at first but I think it's literally because he creeps the f**k out of me! I think he looks like some kind of ancient monster, something that would fit in the Witcher world, that made a pact with Tzeentch for intelligence/mega powers

@youwashock -

@Dr H - thanks!

@ Nerdfest - Ooh nerdy, the pans labyrinth connection leads well into todays post, remin you of anything?

@ San - Thanks man! The photography was very kind to the paint on the wings to be fair.

@ Boss-salvage - *hearty high five*

@boundless - Thanks very much! glad you like the minotaurs, they are some of my favourites as well. Glad you came round to the Oot concept too!

So a small update for you Dakka, I have been busy making some suitably creepy minions for O'ot, as NErdy pointed out pans labyrinth is influencing this project quite a lot as you can probably tell from these pink horrors, hope you enjoy:
