You know... you could make life a lot easier on yourself by being sneaky. Paint all the plates on the inside half of the axe (to the left of the dividing line) metallic. The paint the little circles bright glowy like you did for the the but on the top of the haft. Then all you have to do is work on the very edge. That should be simple enough.

@Gitz Don’t want to change it now. I actually did not like the silver with the neon green, but figured It was the easiest way. Here is a updated pic. This maybe the last attempt before going on to the next model.

The crozius is just mephiston red with agrax earthshade. After the wash I held the mini so it flowed into the lines then did it on the other side, dont tell anyone else its a secret..

Thanks Gobert, his face was done in white scar with the guillemans contrast paint over it. I also put a dab of fleshtearer contrast on his mouth then tried to pick out the eye and teeth.

He has his helmet sculpted hanging off his belt. You could carve it off, but it might take some sculpting to rebuild. Or a pouch and some purity seals.
Outriders are looking very nice. I’ve been enjoying the contrast paints for skin. Huge time saver for pretty decent results.

I agree the outriders are a cool model and thanks for compliment on the blue. As for the Sarge see Nevs response, I actually started to put him together with the thought of changing out the head to helm but I am not that good of a modeler to remove the belt and sculpt.

Totally agree on the contrast paints for faces, a plus is that if you make a mistake just paint white over it and use the contrast again.

Thanks Viterbi, yes some of the parts are hard to reach, the lights in the cowling and around the wheels could be an issue too. Looking forward to seeing how yours turn out.

youwashock wrote:Some may call Ultras boring, I call them classic. These are coming along nicely. "Get yer motor runn-in'..."
. I am not sure why folks think they are boring perhaps because they don’t have the little quirks ( BA, Wolves, etc..) the others do. Big plus for me is you get a Primarch as your Commander!
So I finished the bikers and have primed the Bladeguard. I have a question, should I do their cloaks in the same orange I did the Chaplains or use the standard GW scheme?

Nice one! Nice crisp paintjob, perfect for Ultras. Noting your point about getting a Primarch to lead them, do you have the big man yet? As for cloak colours, I thing you should match the Chaplains cloak, it’s a nice colour and it gives a personal touch to the army.

If you both said Tabard it must be right. Maybe I can have a Necron-Lord vs Primarch battle royale and see who comes out ahead. (My money is on the Primarch he is pretty bad ass in close combat and can come back from the dead on a 4+)

Ah, I thought you still had the plastic bits, and the super glue was just too fiddly. You could try greenstuff - but I suspect that will be too fiddly (and fragile) too. Unless you can find some matching tips from elsewhere (that won't miss them - leftover bits or Chaos perhaps) - it may be just best to leave them as is. Battle damage does happen...

Purple eughh...
Your in for a ride, if you were me.
I am unsure, do you want to go for a darker look? Maybee light dark grey / Black drybrush? On the bodysuit that is?
Alternatively you can use something like ulthuan grey or any other lighter grey to highlight via drybrush after you applied a shade like nuln?
Since it is an asissin i'd probably also only make the edges of the metal of the blade metallic whilest the body of the blade is darkened?
FWIW as allways, my painting advice with a high ammount of salt.

I think I'm with Arakasi on the feedback. You can probably bring it back together with a purple wash/glaze over it all easily enough though. She's not really going to be hiding with those colours, but that may be her plan

I want to thank you guys for the input, afraid I chickened out on the bright color scheme. Went back to a eshin grey basecoat then built up the highlights with some magos contrast , screamer pink and finally some tuskgor fur. Going with green for eyes, blade and pistol. Need to do some clean up and some highlights on the eyes and metallics.
Again thanks for the CC.

Thank you gents for the kind words she has been a joy to paint. I did a little more work on the ruins she is standing on and added some grass.
@ Josh I imagine she is so agile that her hair acts to confuse her opponents as it whirls around her ( that’s my story and I’m sticking to it ).
@ Gobert the skull I was talking about is on the base. It’s grown on me and have no plans to cover it.
So so found an old plastic scout model when I was consolidating my collection this weekend so threw some paint on him. He will probably never hit the table but did it anyway. If I find the rest I may paint them up too. Last up is the next project on the table is 5 more assault intercessors.
Again Thanks for Looking.

Post by: Viterbi
Always nice to finish a unit and captain is coming along great, very nice shield. Regarding the face, I always work inside out in such cases. So I would do the skin, try to do eyes (although in the end may just do some dark wash) and then veeeeeery carefully do the parts around the skin.
84491
Post by: gobert
Looking good so far. As for the Face I’d probably get in there early, which isn’t much help right now! . As it’s quite recessed you might be able to get away with a quick base and a wash to show him in the shadow almost, maybe a bit of Agrax if you want to accentuate the shade. Then touch up with the base colour again? Better advice would be to not listen to me as I struggle with skin tones too, so I’ll be trying the contrast skin tones on my next lot!

Post by: youwashock
For such a small, enclosed area, Contrast might not be a bad idea. Get some light base coat in there, follow up with a dash of Gulliman's. Little dark wash around the eye sockets. Ready for action.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
If you want the face to pop, 1) paint it relatively light so it contrasts with the armour around it. I'd stay away from reddish flesh with all the blue around it, but a pale, elf-like complexion (rhinox hide highlighted to elf flesh with a flesh wash) seems like it would do the trick. and 2) add some additional highlights to the armour around the face to draw the eye in.
18509
Post by: endtransmission
My eye keeps being drawn away from his face to the robes as they are coming across as dark flesh colour in the photos. Maybe something slightly darker for the robes and as has been mentioned, adding some highlighting around the face area to draw the eyes in. Currently your robes are the standout part and immediately catch the eye.

Thanks CK. The red shoulder on top is thinned mephiston red, let it dry then dabbed some evil suns scarlet on it. The ork emblem was painted with brass scorpion then washed with aggrax then nuln oil. Then for the jaw I stippled evil sunz scarlet over that.

Thanks all for the kind words. Surprisingly I think this was the most difficult model to finish, there was a lot of hemming and hawing on how to finish it. Thank you all for the input.
@NotOnline there is 2 more unbuilt kans in the pile of shame so someday I will be tackling those.
Here some pictures of the finished Ultramarines, they have a thick coat of gloss as I promised the Grandspawn he could play with them. Plus I threw everything I painted this year on a desk and took a pic. There is also the chaos sorcerer I painted for a friend.
Thanks for looking.

A great bunch of painted minis there Yorkright. For some reason the Space Crusade scout at the back stands out, probably because he looks about the size of a child next to the Primaris! I like how grimey the Necrons look alongside the Ultramarines. Have a Happy New Year!

. Thank you CommissarKhaine, we will see how they hold up. I magnetized some of the arms in case he gets a bit to rambunctious.
Since we stayed home New Years Eve I put some paint on a new model. Going to add some Sisters of Silence as allies for my Ultramarines here is the preliminary scheme.

I am thinking about leaving it gray and just darken the recessed area.

So you guys like the cloak? Thank you all, trying a few new tricks mostly more contrast.
I’ve also started on a Primaris Lt and surprise, its not an Ultramarine. Again trying a few new things if possible I won’t be using any metallics... I maybe asking for your thoughts on doing non metallic metals.
Thanks for looking.

Thank god it's not an ultramarine made by you, else i might have doubted my distaste for the poster boys
All jokes aside, how happy are you with contrast paints in general? but especially in regards to apothecary white?

Good start on the lieutenant, the only thing I can offer for NMM is to just make sure you've got your lighting directions down, the different parts you're doing will look strange if the lighting is off!

I do like the contrast paints for somethings, but I think I used the word contrast in the wrong context. What I mean is that I am trying to bring exaggerate the shadows and brighten up the highlights more. As for apothecary white I have not tried it yet.

. Welcome back Viterbi the sisters are cool looking models but man they seem so small compared to the new Marines. Just started on the second one, the sword looks a bit off the Grandspawn had a bit of an accident.
Question do you think these conversions will work for CSM Havocks?

Firstly the volkite , looks amazing on the Leutnant.
Secondly, if someone were to object to the havoc conversion, then you know that the game would be anyways not worth the hassle tbh.
20609
Post by: Tyranid Horde
The volkite is looking good on the Lt, and the Lt itself is looking good!
I think the choice of Mk3 armour is a good one for havocs, it's got a heavier look to it and I think it works well with the heavy weapons they carry. What bases are they on? I think for gaming they need to be on 40mm bases instead of the usual 32mm. A few more chaosy bits would help them even further imo.

. Thanks TH, they are on 32mm bases I did not realize they came with bigger bases. Did find some 40s in the bits box that are for some custodes ( is that heresy if I use them ). As for the extra chaosy I will see what there is.

Thank you all for the compliments! My near not metals did not really turn out but this is the first model in a long time I did not use any metallic paints on.
@Viterbi about doing more in this scheme, it probably wont happen I have too many marines as is (company of blood angels plus vehicles, a patrol of deathwatch and the smurfs). This was just for the painting competition and to push myself to try a few new things.
@Gobert the volkite recipe... as far as I remember is white base, mephiston red, evil sunz scarlet, a thinned down wash of evil sunz for the red glow on the barrel. For the coils it was ungor flesh mixed with a little evil sunz then more ungor flesh then a bit of thin white scar near the top of the coils.
Working on the Sisters of Silence next will post some pics later.
Again thank you all for following along!

Post by: Yorkright
2 quick shots of the Sisters. Tried something new with the face on the left one, started with Ungor flesh mixed with Matt Black. Worked up the Ungor till it was almost a golden brown then slowly mixed pink horror adding more to the mix. Finally a bit of white scar.

Why do eyes have to be so difficult. $#|+!!
because small, and white in many cases, aswell as a dot in the middle...
which means absolutely horrible to paint.
the rest of the model is ace though!

The sisters are looking good, particularly the one with the red cape, great layering. Not a fan of painting eyes on models outside of marines, GW tend to be quite fine with their sculpts and I don't have the coordination for many eyes.

Nice job on the sisters Yorkright! Regarding eyes, if it's not a character model I sometimes just use a dark shade in the eye recess, that's often enough. Or if I did eyes and they're not level, you can just scratch one out with a hobby knife, it is the battlefield of the 40th (41st?) millenium after all

Life is busy so not much time for hobbying but I did get some more paint on the SOS’s. Picked up some 32 and 40mm bases for them and the havocs.
