I'm jealous, mate. We get this stuff over here call Czechvar, which is supposed to be the same, but it isn't.

Projects over the next few days:
Well, I need to do the eyes and bases on the pagk, ready to go against leadlegion, as well as the EC's sword (verdigris, will be).
But I like a distraction, I do. Matt.Kingsley's Ork vehicle cop caught my eye, so I did a bit of work adding metals to my Defilork:
And primed big mek Luvlork:
Also, some work on my Ordo Malleus =][= Darkhammer (or whatever Valeriya's nemesis is called).
Primed and based Ophelia for the Malifaux comp too:
And stuck a few Welshmen on bases too!

Hopefully a better idea of where I'm going with Ophelia:
Thanks guys! I have tried to follow your examples - ie thick - and not stressing too much over precision, as they're getting weathered. Next job will be finishing grots and then applying tamiya weathering powders (a further excuse to test and play!)
They're not bad at all, quite subtle really; I like to use the rust and orange rust palettes in conjunction with one another. They give a light drybrush effect, or you can apply them heavily and seal with varnish.
I just painted lots of green skins. Time consuming, fiddly and a bit off my usual style, but fun to do. Pics when there's light and I'm not comatose. Also, picked up a dozen plastic horsemen off eBay for my welsh for a steal, and got an immense supply drop from Miss Dee, so a great day all-in-all.

I'm gona have to treat myself to some of those. Do you uses the overpriced applicator or something else?
Well, the one they come with isn't bad, and you're usually blending the powders from the same palette anyway. Having said that, I do have the applicator brush too. I would say that I don't use them on armies (eg not on gk vehicles) as they are time consuming - so good for special occasions, like the Defilork.
Thanks gang.
Right, Ophelia is pretty much done for the Malifaux comp, bar better pics - so, C&C sought!
I can't believe I painted her nails...
Struggling with light + supermacro
Tried for Perdita style hair
Homemade bayou base. Yay PVA!
Defilork has now had tamiya weathering, which has subsequently been sealed with purity seal.
Inadvertently knocked off, and lost, a grot head. Bah.
This was Tamiya Orange Rust btw.
Better seen on close up!
Actually, I find the idea of headless grot still sitting at his post, operating whatever little bit of the machinery was his responsibility fairly amusing. Nice work on the maliflux fig graven. I'm sure it'll make a good showing.

To war! Leadlegion and I are going to try 6th tomorrow. I'll let y'all know how it goes. LMK your thoughts, C&C etc on the above and do please vote with your mouse clicker!
They just needed their bases and eyes done. Season 3 Cleveland show provided background noise. I also scrubbed up my Storm Eagle and Solomon Lok (and did various loads of washing). It may be school holidays but I only get
Monday&Tuesday to myself, which over the full 6 weeks actually only works out to 8 days of P&M - 6 in fact, given that that's me for today and tomorrow I'm heading into gw to play 6th in-store and then vs leadlegion! Gitalong lil doggy, times a-wastin!
On the subject of the different Ordos colours...Yes, i agree with a deep, emerald green for the Ordo Xenos. However, the azure blue is the colour of an Inquisitor's Rosette when they are under Special Condition (think thats what its called, will check my Ravenor Novels when i get home)....Saying that, i really like how the blue pops out against the darker colours, and even the dark red as well!
@ tipios: yeah... Dang! Culexus is DE torso, with fw mini-eagles added and gk accessories, then eldar legs and arms.
Cool, I've looked through the Inquisitor rules, and the cool art work has pull me towards, trying something new. Obviously I've started with my Inquisitor marine, but fancy doing some assassin, and those DE parts look the part, thanks
Off the top of my head? Um. Liturgy banners (you know, the wee open rectangular scrolls) and da vehicle scrolls mostly. To a lesser extent termie torso fronts, or, khorne zerker heads with the T shaped visor. Or nurgle/tzeentch daemon bits: I is sad Panda coz I hasn't cut up a squad of their lesser daemons yet
@tipios: not really fussed. Chaos ones are pretty baroque and convert pretty easily to gk. I only need a couple, mostly cos chopping down regular termie backs is pretty tedious.
@yb: thanks matey, I'm not as fast as it appears. I have an entire mentor legion army that I've not touched in about a year, I get stuff primed and then promptly get side tracked! Also I don't post spits and spots of painting, and when I do get a day to myself I go a bit bananas.
So, my bags are packed and I'm ready to go, as it were. I'll try to post my impressions on 6th between my trip to store today and game tonight vs leadlegion. In the mean time I'm off to get my arm stabbed for a good cause,
Loving the rules, thus far. I'll hold off on army shot just now, of that's cool; I'd like to get a few more bits done. Also, I'm bushed; kids have whacked me out totally.
As it says on the tin. I am currently engaged in all-out war with a Storm Eagle fuselage - I'm sorry FW but it's ridiculous that, even when I've bent back the flat panels into shape with boiling water they still don't fit without vast gaps.
This is why I don't buy large scale kits from FW. Bah, and so forth. In its defence, I suppose, it does use hardly any of the parts from the Storm Raven that it comes with. Get me some more engine vents and I can build another o' them at least.
By contrast, my box of Celt Cavalry arrived this morning. I expected 12, with the option (as it says) of 8 light and 4 heavy.
It comes with 12 of each. Only 12 horses, but 12 full heavy guys and 12 full light, as well as a plethora of heads and bits. Freakin' gorgeous, too. Most impressed, gonna get me another 12 horses and the Welsh are coming to the Saga party.
*sigh* back to the Storm Eagle.
On a happy note, I took my GKs into my local GW yesterday and they were jolly impressed, especially by the Culexus, taking pics for their blog/fb page etc which I'm very chuffed about. I expected some snidey comments about my d-style bases, but a staffer noted that in 6th you don't have to use standard bases any more. The more you learn.
I have 4 large kits from FW. Two are vehicles. Haven't tried to put any of them together yet so we'll see what kind of paint I'm in for. However at least with one of them, (the ork mega dread)... having large gaps is probably NOT much of an issue (ramshackle and all).

Tell me about it. The SE is an absolute arse to put together. I found strapping the thing in zip strips/tie tags/ whatever they're called then dunking it in the water did the job. With said strips holding it in place until the glue dried. The kit is a piece of gak that you have to force into the intended position.
whalemusic360 wrote:Yeah, think of it before liquid green stuff! Just part of the joys of working with FW heavies I suppose.
Oh, I know, I know... But actually, it's mostly the large unavoidable gap at the front that has me raging just now.

Clearly, the solution is that we should all play orks...

Nice blog BTW.
I used g-clamps I bought for resurrecting a centaur. Welcome, btw, to the blog - thanks for kind words!
tipios wrote:Dam you FW!!!!! I'm suprised they have got away with so many poor models. It seems everybody complains about them.
I know. You get a company like ramshackle, who despite being a one-man show (or, I suppose arguably because) churns out consistent, high quality lumps of resin - or at least high quality by FW standards. Equally I've used a CH SR conversion kit, and that was minor in terms of gapping compared to this.
Oh, and I've built a Tarascus, which was flawless (and vast).
(btw tipios - failed to get to post today - sorry).
whalemusic360 wrote:What parts on the Eagles don't fit well? Just ordered one, planning on having a fleet at some point.
You need to trim the canopy (which it tells you) and the front ramp hinges (which it doesn't). Other than that any warping on the fuselage section and you're toast.
What loadout you thinking btw, WM? I think mm/lc and fill with vanguard vets for silliness, with a tag along storm talon.

Thanks mate. I only use superglue as others make me very nauseous. Planning a Tau theme for this and Storm Talon bases.
I've also figured out my linking fluff. My Ordo Xenos will be Mentor green - Mentor tech is ultra, poss of xenos provenance, so we have a nice rationale for alliances with =][= and gks. Makes sense to me
The Eagle looks cool, shame about the gaps!! Have you thought about putting loads of elastic bands around the front, then putting a hair dryer over it until it pulls in?
^ Well, thin strips of plasticard should cover the worst offences. I just resent it is all.
So...
Done a bit of work on the base for the Storm Eagle (this is the front, did stability)
And the back:
Yup, Tau salvage operation, planting charges on the downed piranha.
This is where grovelling comes in. I really need a couple of tau torsos and some arms for the dead crew, if anyone can help me I'll send you a child, or possibilty of bits.
And while doing one base, well, how about another?
What's it for? The aforementioned Storm Talon.
Inspired by Anvilshammer's excellent conversion (which I now can't find the link to!)
I've managed to get my head round how I want it to look; I hate the giant pod but want the impression of something that's still pintle mounted.
So, early wip, insofar as no wings engines or rockets:
inmygravenimage wrote:This is where grovelling comes in. I really need a couple of tau torsos and some arms for the dead crew, if anyone can help me I'll send you a child, or possibilty of bits.
Ok,
Finished my version of the Storm Talon:
Just about finished my version!
Brought the pods closer to body, I've dispensed with the silly doodads out the top, used the tail fin split as new wings, and brought the pintle into the nose.
As discussed, I'm really disappointed in the Storm Eagle, and one reason is a startling lack of detail, especially on the engines.
Hence:
Lastly, I have 31 termies primed: how many will I paint tomorrow in 5hrs?

This may be of interest to any of you with casting problems. Having spent 2 hrs working on the back end of my Storm Eagle, I finally rang fw enraged. I made it clear that this was exact why I don't order their large kits. Without a quibble, they offered to immediately send me out a full replacement. They asked if I could take, and, send pictures of the problem components for double checking at QC. They did say that they're experiencing a lot of problems with this kit generally. I'm pretty impressed by the attitude, tbh.

very glad little un is all good graven!
ouch, thats some problematic casting there Batm...i mean, graven....Have to admire GW's Customer service sometimes, i have to say. One of the few things they do REALLY well
agreed, of course, it would be better if they didnt need to have good customer service in the first place...but at least they have it covered this way...
oops, it will only be worrying if he starts to recognise your voice!!
FW's vehicle kits are all somewhat....awkward at the best of times.
The only reason I'm tolerating the Extra Armour kits for my Rhinos and Land Raiders is the fact I'm Nurgle and was going to fill gaps with GS, score and drill them anyhow.
Well I love the stormtalon conversion! It is a shame about the FW kit, did you soak the resin in water before you assembled it? I find that really helps to get a good fit. Of course there is only so much bending it can do. I wonder how full kits like the assault ram compare to this?
Well worth the price... DCM-ness, that is. Tbh, I feel a little guilty about the Storm Eagle - and not entirely sure what to do with it. I could just build the Storm Raven - which I'll happily have another of for my GK, maybe build a DW version - and hawk the Eagle bits, but that seems dishonest somehow. Thoughts?
The light was rubbish for photos of my game against leadlegion, but I'll give you a brief rundown.
He was playing IG mech vet, usual drill: 4 squads of vets, 3 in chimeras 1 in reserve, 1 LRBT, 1 Demolisher, a blob squad, a commissar and CCS with GLs.
Mine was Crowe, 3 razors, LRC, Psyfleman and 4 purifier squads with falchions and psycannons.
We rolled Eternal War/Dawn of War, with 2 objectives - both mysterious, 1 in a building - an archeotech (pyramid), a mysterious crystal forest and a mix of craters and cactii to complete a desert-temple feel. Night fighting throughout.
General thoughts:
Terrain
The table felt really fluffy. It was fun and added a lot to the game. The random elements (we got skyfire at a giant statue, sabotage in the building, brainsuckers in the crystals and an alien corpse in our archeotech) was both tense and enjoyable. Being able to shoot the building, and drop bits onto his last survivors, was highly entertaining.
The challenge rules are interesting - it actually meant his commissar lived longer, in the end, as he got observer re-rolls to help him survive. It was also a kind of surreal Scooby-Doo moment:
"I challenge thee! I know that under that fleshy human mask you are really a hideous, skull-faced servant of dark powers!"
"Damn! And I would've got away with it to if it wasn't for you meddling Grey Knights!"
Hull Points
Chimeras are like paper. AV10 just collapses utterly under glancing. Rhinos/Razorbacks aren't much better, but 6th really penalises mech vet overtly in this way. Also, sentinels are rubbish again. Getting headbutted by a Psyfleman is not a dignified way to get destroyed.
I would say that generally leadlegion felt very demoralised by his experience, as he was highly frustrated by the ineffectiveness of what had been a very potent force under 5th. Don't get me wrong, he was a great opponent - joining in the hilarity when his melta bomb blew up his own squad of vets, for instance - but stymied by a combination of rubbish dice and glancing hits o' doom.
I like 6th - it's very deadly, and to be honest quicker than I expected. I'd still like multiple bookmarks but the book is better laid out - certainly more user friendly - than previous. Wound allocation's entirely logical, and no more time consuming, LOS wasn't a bother and random charge ranges added a touch of tension. Oh, and I like premeasuring very much, though I still find myself doing mental trig regardless.
Hey ho, I will try to upload gamma-corrected pics.
Onwards and bedwards,
graven
^ Funny guy I honestly don't see what the fuss is about wound allocation in 6th. As for the vehicle thing, I think it's another example of warmachine's influence on the game - it's definitely much more aggressive, although you can still castle up. I would say that I think the glancing rules are a bit of cack-handed fix of the mech environment.
It was a useful game, and I enjoyed elements of it - there was definitely a sense of fear in charging a blob squad of guard from the sheer volume of over watch dice being hurled, but leadlegion did feel like selling off his guard afterwards! In discussion, it means a shift back to weapon squads, I think, for ig. Time and meta will tell.
Automatically Appended Next Post: ...
And as promised, a nice big zoomable full army shot:
Automatically Appended Next Post: Some batrep pics, too - sorry they're a bit rubbish:
Leadlegion sets up, and redeployed to one flank using his warlord strategy:
... Whilst the blob squad makes for the objective on the other flank.
The redeployed demolisher lays in to my LRC, scattering but then quickly getting a glancing with its hill weaponry.
The sentinels advance on the flank to take out the Psyfleman, scoring a quick glancing hit. Suddenly, I am aware that my dread is more vulnerable than venerable.
My turn! Obviously, from this point on, I forget to take any photos. The LRC slags the demolisher with its mm, and its hurricane bolters wreck a chimera. This is, both leadlegion and I feel, a poor show - standard infantry weapons should not be taking down tanks.
Some other highlights - the Psyfleman managed to savage the sentinels, scoring first blood. So, not unreasonably, leadlegion decided to tie it up in cc with the sole survivor. Unfortunately, a snap fire glance and a cc glance made short work of it.
Handy those wee servo markers. Reminds me of the game - diablo maybe? - where little ghostly skulls floated up when you killed enemies.
Look!
It has Skyfire!
Challenge accepted!
The melta bomb scatter incident. Leadlegion insisted I take a photo.
Final stand of vets inside booby trapped building; gk with psycannon makes himself a heavy 4 target:
Final victory!
I achieved 1 primary and all secondary objectives. Not too bad
I thought you couldn't throw melta bombs? That looked like a really fun board to play on.
And I would say you should play 5 or so games before you decide you don't like the army/system. It takes a few games to figure out how to play under a different rule set. Just my 2 cents.
Oh well, our mutual error.
@LRD: I know, in many ways it just requires a bit of rethinking. @giraffex: Yeah, I had considered that for the stormraven remains. That, or a serious bit of terrain!
Anyway,
I'm planning on running a painting competition of some sort. I'll be off dakka for a couple of weeks, so that setting a wee GMS holiday challenge would be in order. I'm not entirely sure what the challenge will be yet: Deathwatch or CowbOrks, I think. There's a lot of interest in doing one-off marines so DW is where I'm leaning. Judges will be myself and leadlegion - good to have a pro's painting eye on board, while I tend to be more about the modelling side.
Oh, and there will of course be prizeS to account for the swappable element of this Interested?

I must laugh.... did you put this announcement on EVERY THREAD on dakka, or just the ones I subscribe to??
The Inquisitor turned the unblinking gaze of his crystalline eye across the assembled Astartes. Emotions flickered across their souls, pride, suspicion – some of their assembled number were, he knew, thought lost to many – anxiety? He smirked inwardly, his visage as impassive as their adamantium helms. They shall know fear, before our course is run.
When his voice came out, it was smooth, melodic; it belied his scarred form.
“I am Lord Inquisitor Crowl. You will call me sir. You are to serve me, and the Ordo Xenos, as I see fit.” One or two of them twitched, almost imperceptibly. He leant closer.
“Forget your oaths to your brothers. Forget your oaths to your chapters. Your only oath now is to me.” He smiled, fractionally. “To the Deathwatch, and our Emperor’s glory.” He flexed, allowing himself to stretch, his augmentations and arcane technology all to apparent. His voice rang out like a temple bell: “Imperator Rex!”
And the voices of Deathwatch sounded an echo that built to a roar. Perhaps, he mused, we may yet survive this.
***
Right folks, it's competition time!
Open to all and sundry; the challenge is to produce a Deathwatch Marine, chapter and loadout of your choice.
Judging will be on painting, modelling, and overall by myself and leadlegion. If you want to do a bit fluff, that won't hurt, either.
I am building up a Deathwatch retinue for Crowl from my existing GMS and if any of you would care to send me your fig that would be amazing. This won't affect the judging.
The one catch for the contest is your fig should be on a d-style (rounded lip) base; if you need one, just ask and I'll send you one.
There will be a couple of prizes for this, and the winner will have the choice. You'll be able to pick from getting a mini custom painted by leadlegion, a Marine from me (GK, mentor or weeping angel) OR... a Storm Eagle conversion kit (that is, all the resin components to build a SE from an SR). It's the new one FW are sending me, in case you're wondering Hopefully, not too shabby.
Picture rules are pretty standard for p&m: you must submit an unpainted or primed pic as well as your final photo. Please make the final image as large as possible and post both in-thread.
Deadline: let's say 2 months - seem reasonable? So, midnight gmt 13th Sept (that is 13th>14th).
I'm intrested, but the liped base thing kinda puts me off...Cause I'll wanta use the modle in games... Somehow.. So do we have to send you the modle or is it your choice?
@gits: yup, basing is absolutely a part of it! Apols for not making that clear.
@Miss Dee:
Spoiler:
Yeah, I saw the comment about the batteries on fb
Automatically Appended Next Post: @Hazzer: your choice, and if you want to keep it yourself, then fair enough - I just think lipped bases look cooler. Also, as an aside, 6th allows non-standard base sizes.

Hey guys, I'll buy & supply at least some to US folks. Makes NO sense for graven to be saddled with the expense of shipping a bunch of single bases to the US when I can send them for the price of a stamp!
---------------------------
There. I just purchased a dozen bases off e-bay and will ship them to up to 11 US people. If you want to PayPal me $1 for the base plus shipping (slight less that it'll cost me), that's fine. If not, that's fine too.
I expect I'll be in but I'll want to keep my entry, I'm just no fun lol.
I've had them on my list to do for ages and I want to pick up some special bases and the proper GW kit for them.
One question I do have though which I hadn't got round to thinking of is what would you use them as in a normal army?
I'd want them as allies for my Sisters but tactical marines seems a bit of a low blow for them, also would they have dreads etc cant find much on them online apart from the wikki page.
edit: ignore the last two lines found some more info
I'll send bases out to everyone who needs one once back from me hols; I'll order up a bunch from to t'internet for my return. Thrilled by the enthusiastic response to the comp!
Deathwatch are marines from any chapter drafted by the Ordo Xenos to aid Inquisitors with particularly heinous threats. Paint scheme is Blacked out armour with silver left arm. Right shoulder as per chapter of origin. Sometimes, this is reversed so chapter colours with right shoulder as deathwatch (this is non-canon iirc but rather an aesthetic choice by some folk).

I read somewhere that the reversed theme was indicative of their return to their chapter after services in the deathwatch... Cant remember where though, and as always it could be some odd idea that I just made up
I'm in for sure! You'll have to send me the special base though Graven. Funny thing is the last Dakka painting competition I entered was the also the Death Watch painting comp!
Here was my entry last time, I'm going for power armour this time though!
@Ramos: the odd ideas are often then best, or at least most fun @Knightley: I am what I am *shrug* it's a holdover from when I got back into 40k, using urban war figures I had lying around for guard; I guess it just kinda stuck.
@rodgers37&biohazard: great to have you on board!
@miss dee: well you could always put a dead pink space elf on the base...
On a separate note, if you feel inclined to vote for my Defilork in Matt.Kingsley's Ork vehicle competition (or indeed one of the other marvellous entries, I shan't be too distraught), you can do so here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/461264.page
It's nice to support the other community-based p&m activities!
I've ordered up some more bases, so I'll be able to post out when I get back home next week.
In other news, my local club's thinking about a 500pt league; might be time to break out the Mentors again! My gut says a wee scout list - unit of camo snipers, unit in a speeder - with a storm talon for some run and gun support. Not sure what hq to run? Thoughts appreciated.
Automatically Appended Next Post: @rm2020 - wow, nice job! I also entered that comp:
^base theme is entirely up to you. You're free to base a simply or as intricately as you want, within the restriction of the 30mm. You can use a detailed resin base, a plain base that fits your own army theme, ship decking, a xenos corpse, or whatever. I freely admit that I go a bit OTT with my bases, but then I like a bit o' narrative.
Oh well, I should participate in more of these things. And I do have a deathwatch squad posing as sternguards in my raven guard army that needs painting.
graven, i've read pretty much everything about the Deathwatch on Lexicanum now, and just wanted to know if I could do one of these for your competition: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Deathwatch_Keeper#.UAbC2O1vSqM They are cool, think I might make a whole squad up anyway
@rodgers: tres cool. I would seriously consider doing a dw force if my gks weren't so similar. Although you could quite feasibly run a dw force as counts-as gks regardless. @tipios: Looking good, glad I successfully hassled you!
@geekboy yas will need patience fer me, Issa wasnt too good at the rules the first time around.... nd a tank wasa tank... when I played with the *cough* hubby he was a gak player n took it too serious, issa likes to laff!
Right folks,
Am absolutely thrilled at the response to this. Can we get a shout out of confirmed contributors/chapters? and I'll compile and list, which I'll also pin to the top of the thread.
Im still in- just gotta hunt a base down (but itll have to wait as I have to move 200 miles north next week... Aaaaagh.....)
Was gonna do a DW marine from my custom chapter if thats cool with you- the Marines Chrysemys (the (somewhat old and non-updated) blog is in my sig. Unless ya were wanting a canon chapter?
redkommando wrote:I'll join this competition, if that is ok.
I may need one of those baes, but I also live in NZ. . . any suggestions?
Of course! Tremendous to have you aboard. The bases are those used in many other systems (warmahordes, malifaux etc); if you're stuck pm me your address and I'll send you one (that goes for anyone who needs a base just now!)
Miss Dee wrote:I may throw in a standard DA back pack as well [snip] may give him a combi bolter

Sounds great, I'm not about to limit your creativity on this!
nerdfest09 wrote:Definitely in for me! :-) I just need a base, what sort is it i need again?
See note above, they're variously referred to as d-style, chamfered and lipped bases.
On another note, I feel I need to give my long-neglected Mentors a bit of love, if only so I don't hit a GK burnout. With my local posse planning on doing a 500 pt league, for a bit of 6th learning fun, I was thinking about SM. Must conform to force chart, no specials. We are encouraged to build a force for a narrative, building units further down the line.
I've posted about this in Army Lists too, a scary place which, if you're anything like me, I rarely visit (as opposed to YMDC and OT, which truly test my sanity!) I'd certainly value the input of my regular crew (and hey, you're essentially dictating what I paint next).
So, I've been toying with a Scout-based force - the logical first thrust of any marine force. HQ is most challenging, but if nothing else a Libby gives me a chance to play with the new psychic rules if I wish. Epistolary feels like a bit of a fragile waste, but anything else seems to me to lack real utility. Force dome is always handy, machine curse is vile in 6th, null zone neat too.
A variation is to swap down the psychics for another bare-bones scout squad or storm, and/or maybe lose the homer/hb for a pf. Thoughts gratefully received!
Graven
You know that's a good catch. I had been thinking about deep striking the storm but actually not worth it. A power weapon, perhaps, on the storm scout serg, or some sort of weapon buff on the Libby maybe?
I think you're going to get slaughtered. The Storm is going down turn 1 or 2, the Scouts are too fragile in CC. Drop the Librarian upgrade, drop the teleport homer, buy another Land Speeder or some Scout Bikes, if you're staying with the Scout Theme.
^ Well that was forthright! no, I appreciate it actually. Another funny little list I had in mind was just a captain on a bike and 2 5-man squads tearing the place up - better survivability, you think?
I think the scout list is in theme, useful, and survivable. But I also think that vehicles are fragile, and either need to be screened or taken in numbers. The Scout Biker squad gets you Astartes Grenade launchers, and a pieces of booby-tapped terrain which, especially at 500 points, will really annoy your opponent.
HQ: Librarian on a Bike (your choice of powers): 135 pts Tp: 5 scouts, srg w/ combi-melta, PW & MB : 105 pts (in LS Storm) Tp: 5 scouts, sniper rifles: 85 pts FA: 3 scout bikes, 2 AGL, srg w/ PW & MB: 110 pts FA: LS Storm, MM: 65 pts Total: 500 pts
Libby runs with the bikes, is T5 and very fast. Storm shadows bikes or outflanks (but I don't think I'd do that). Second scout unit sits in the back and snipes out sergeants or special weapons.
It's more durable... a bit. Faster and more flexible too.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Actually, if you didn't think you needed the psionics... a MoTF is a pretty good deal. For the same cost you get a power-weapon proof 2+ save, an extra attack and 2 PF attacks. Twin linked plasma pistol *and* a flamer. Jeez!.... Not bad. I may have to build one of these...
Come to think of it, my favorite is HQ: libby on bike HQ: MoTF on bike troop: 5 sniper scouts FA: 4x scout bikes w/ 3 AGL, srg w/ PF
Gives you your own mini zooming death-star at 500 pts!
I'm a big fan of scout bikes so those are great suggestions. I like the motf deathstar idea but, @gits, surely the double hq version isn't legal (only 1 troop)?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Come to think of it I have this guy...
I'm not exactly sure... some times the FOC requirements for very small lists are a bit squirrely... but yes, you're probably right. I do need to find a beefier jet bike... perhaps from one of the 3rd party vendors, for a MoTF or Libby. I think that figure of yours works perfectly well.
Ok so following on from your suggestions, how about:
500
HQ: MotF on a Bike: 135 pts
Tp: 5 scouts, srg PW & MB : 95 (in LS Storm)
Tp: 5 scouts, sniper rifles, camo: 100
FA: 3 scout bikes, 2 AGL, cluster, serg - pw, mb 115
FA: LS Storm, HB: 50
Total: 500 pts
No combi-meltas, so I'm hedging a bit. As for models, I think I'll use those old metal jet bikes for scouts? I know this guy who did that rather well...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh wait that's only 490. 10 to play with I guess!
Also, my holiday has become somewhat extended (=minor delay on sending bases out ), so I need to see some wip pics from you lot!
@gits - true, true although I should really find a further 5 to give the motf his pw.
Had an amazing day today catching up with Mabrothrax. Never go to an ex-gw staffer's house, especially one with nurgle, alpha legion, tau and squat armies (and used to buy fw resin by weight...) Chewed the fat, convicted the old git to return to dakka, chatted over 6th, scored some bits, played with a lot of G1 transformers, (scorponok...), womenfolk despaired, kids had a blast. Good times The DW competition is going great guns, thanks for all your support, and remember to post your WIPs and finals there!
Very nice work on that Blood Angel DW Marine. Course, I won't be offering any comments at all on the competition thread itself. As one of the judges, I'll be holding off on commenting on the finished entries until after the judging.
By the way Graven, fancy a 500pts game at the club soon? I'm still waiting on 180 points of my 500pt list turning up in the post, but hopefully it won't be long.
Sorry graven, been preoccupied. I like the owl head on the bike, pretty neat use of existing design motif. Not sure about the giant book though. Exactly what is the basis for the smaller bikes? I don't recognize it.
Yeah, I'm not sold on the book either, even for space teachers. The bikes are the original rt metal ig jetbikes. Got them off s_l iirc so he'd know for certain.
Sorry, didn't comment as I don't like the old jet bikes I general. I think the motf owl head could use a bit more detail, though you may be able to do that via paint.
one thing, above the owl head (LOVE that idea btw), to either side, can i see the twin eagle heads of the Aquila showing? Sort of underneath the owl? kind of gives the gaem away if thats what they are....cant tell properly though, it may just be part of the bike design...
Thanks guys. @reiko I think that's just the wing tips, but I take your point.
Because LL's 500 pt force hasn't arrived yet we're going to do a 1k rematch. Need to write me a new gk list might run Draigo-wing or Mordrak-ghost, see how a tight termie list fares.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and have been building Welshmen on horses for saga, but they still need a lot of cleanup (mould lines down middle of faces, a bad call wargames factory, a bad call).
Hey gang,
Apologies for lack of updates, been getting #1 son ready for starting school and having some quality dad time.
In preparation for my stated goal of getting my termies done this summer, I have managed to now finish building, priming and laying down the first coat of white on them all:
I'm playing a game against leadlegion Tuesday, and hete's my slightly daft list:
Named characters at low point values are usually pretty good... even if they do take up a big chunk of your points. 17 guys is slim though... All-or-nothing as you say.
Gitsplitta wrote:Named characters at low point values are usually pretty good... even if they do take up a big chunk of your points. 17 guys is slim though... All-or-nothing as you say.
Eldest's starting school eh? Big day in his life!
Yeah, it's a list that's all about turn 1. Little guy's super excited, just me & his Kim that are struggling! 'twas ever so, I guess.
GiraffeX wrote:Looking forward to seeing Mordrak and his ghost knights painted.
Really interested to see how he does as he looks an interesting HQ choice.
Well I'm using paladins as ghost knights for now. I might manage to get my ghost knights done but they're A bare metal and B super secret!
The old skool GK's are awesomely cool! and it's nice to see them getting some love for a change, don't see too many around. the motf is coming together well too, the conversion beamer really looks right at home and i look forward to seeing what you do with the front cowling and skull/wires etc.
Thanks for the retro love gang! There is a regular gk in there too, I want a mix to show the spread of warriors that would've been in the fortress - I'm going to build a paladin tonight id the kids settle and banner bearer at some point too. My original intent was to essentially invert my usual colour scheme (white armour, black helms) but I think the weeping angel look should look suitably ethereal - thoughts? Blue or green eyes?
@Knightley: High praise indeed from the master of jetbikes!
@yb: yeah, they're very neat, though the kendo masked ones are my favourite.
Speaking of which, ghost knights primed, reds laid down on the 12 "regulars". If I have to play part painted so be it, don't want to rush them and have a meltdown. Also, I've added a cloak to the weeping librarian, will try to get better shots tomorrow.
Had an excellent game against Leadlegion last night. Wrote it up, and my phone just ate it.
:censored:
So, abbreviated. I ran the Mordrak list above, he run funkiness guard (plas vets, meltas vets, LRBT, Demolisher, foot blob with GLs and ac, hb team and a ccs with master of ordance (i refused to type Moo...) with more flamers than a flamey thing.
Diagonals set up, purge the xenos, lots of ruins.
Short version: I tabled him in 5, 12 to 3. He did take out Mordrak ultimately with a sergeant's bolt pistol though, mostly by attrition. Librarian's auto-penetrating template power is brutal, took at the LRBT first turn. Certainly a nasty, and tbh competitive list at 1k. I forgot to scout one unit of termies so he didn't have to split his fire. Charging through terrain: the lesson is, hope to get a 1 on the right warlord table.
Basically, he won turn 1 and castles.
-I do Mordrak deep strike and get stuck in a slightly awkward position, but still inflict a lot of damage, taking out LRBT and a squad of vets.
Turn 2 he lays into Mordrak. Upshot is lose a couple of ghost knights and gain a new one.
- I bring in first termie squad with summoning, at one edge I'd ruins, and charge the ccs. In challenge, take out commander, whilst rest of squad deal with Ccs. Summoned termies whittle away at castled troops.
T3 he lays into ghost squad with everything, finally taking down Mordrak in the process; Libby survives.
-Libby summons other termies and takes out plasma vets with vortex. 1st summoned squad charge, and take out blob squad fairly spectacularly between assault shots and cc. 2nd summoned squad shoot a charge path on the demolisher for the 1st for following turn. He has that and 4 guardsmen left.
T4, remaining squad takes out Libby. Shucks. Demolisher takes out most of termie squad 2.
- Termie squad 1 charge the demolisher and, despite failing to activate hammerhand, make it go bang in cc. 3 of remaining ig die in explosion. :')
T5 solitary guardsman fails to shine a torch at a termie, and concedes defeat.
I genuinely enjoyed the game. Mordrak is not overpowered, though very nasty - Leadlegion observed that, essentially, his game was spent trying to tie up one character, who arguably wasn't the real threat. I might play with this list for a while and see where it goes as it will motivate me to paint them!
Congrats on the win graven! Commiserations to LeadLegion (and to the eaten post )
Sounds like a fun little game. I love smaller games like that , one of the few (very few) times i managed to get my sister to play a game was at around 750pts and was an absolute blast (mostly because she took a shine to a certain Sergeant and spent the whole time protecting him....)
It was a fun game -despite being my 12th loss at 40K in a row! I would say that the Mordrak list is a fun one to play against due to the challenge of the automatic on-target Turn 1 deepstrike.
Couple of things I did wrong: Castling up is NOT a valid tactic against the Mordrak and Sumoner libby list as it concentrates your force in one easily digestable chunk. I needed to disperse my deployment and force the Terminators to move around more to engage my guys in close combat.
Second: Should have used Fire at my Target rather than the Rapid fire orders from the Command Squad. Only the second time I've used a Company Command squad in my list for who knows how long, and I managed to forget about it.
Third: Should have given the plasma vet squad the Take Cover order, preventing the Librarian from clearing the way for the Second squad to charge into melee. Actually, come to think of it, I can't remember if the Libby's attack ignored cover anyway or not?
Thinks Graven needs to remember:
Where you position your characters in a unit is VERY important.
Just being within 2" of a unit makes an Independent character PART of that unit, somewhat limiting your target selection option.
And that's that. Lot's of lessons learned all round.
I do think that list was something of a one trick pony though. I rather doubt I would lose to it again.
The lib looks nice, he looks like hes pondering whether to step off his base or not. I think the sword looks fine but its not easy to see from the front onwards.
I'd go with balustrades for the platforms, with maybe some patches of 'armour' plating.
And some cables.
Very nice squiggoth, loving the howdah.
Err, lots of other cool stuff earlier too Lemme see...
Some old-skool GK termies - lovin' those
Cool libb(ies?), one stepping off the base, one with swappable jet-pack - think they were both libbies. Oh, it's all become one massive blur. Too many blogs to catch up on. Too much stuff happening in all of them. Arrrrghhhh
Sorry, calm face now
More old-skool going down with the jetbikes- very nice, especially the c-beamer for the motf
There was something else too....but it's gone now. I'm pretty sure it was awesome though
Rivets cables and plates, oh my!
Will do @mt: great to have you back mate! Glad you like the Libby (both the same - step off, mag pack). Yeah, gotta love those old gks - and must get on with the motf!
@dr: I'm planning a steering device of sorts - SM piñata!
The howdah is good, but... too imperial looking. It needs less symmetry and more crap. You could of course cover the whole thing in glyphs, trophies, faeces and such, but the best thing to do would be to make the underlying structure less 'tank' and more 'pile of crap'.
Make the side platforms completely different for a start. Treat it less like a walking gun and more like the epitome of green trailer trash.
@gits - thanks, I think the thing is to let it just come together organically (I mean Ork-Kan-ikly, sorry). Each time I'm adding a layer of plate I look again at the uber bags of junk spread out on the table and just grab bits until they for right. Baneblade bits in particular feel very orky, I think. That light's going to have a smiley on it (possibly with watchmen style blood splatter if I can manage).
@mt: cheers bud, you are an orky kitbash guru so I appreciate that. Sorry for disregarding your balustrade idea (I had sprue cut and everything for it), should I add to the front of the side parts or just leave em? I also wonder about walkways etc.
Other vexing problems at this stage:
Do I add more dakka? I mean aren't these things supposed to be walking walls of gun? I have a baneblade cannon I could add above the head/under the howdah (or somewhere else altogether). Where else, and what else, should I add?
I plan to add grots sitting in the sponsons, and this leads on to my second problem: do I integrate crew now, or after painting the rest? I have a nice mix of grot and gnoblar models to add in, and part of me thinks I'll get a better visual narrative if I integrate them into it before painting - however, that obviously means it'll be trickier to paint generally.
Also, anything else I should add generally?
Cheers gang,
Graven
Automatically Appended Next Post: @ Mabrothrax: eh?
Hah, I often plan on balustrades on walkways/rooftops etc, but they always seem to become solid plates by the time they actually appear
More dakka is never a bad thing....Under the howdah is an interesting idea. What's planned for the turret hole?
Walkways? Maybe if there's an area which is awkward to get to, but I see grots clambering all over the place using ropes/chains/handholds etc on most places.
You need to plan out where the crew are going and what they're doing before painting (or at least the majority of them), but paint them seperately - unless you feeling particulary masochistic when you start the colourisation process
Cheers mate, good pointers. More dakka and separate grots a-go-go. Turret hole is just planned to have a hatch and a nob in a large sombrero, possibly with a tequila Molotov. I had planned on giving it a gun turret but I think that would return it to LRBT hull status, which I want to avoid.
Not really much more in the way of progress as am now on day 6 of killer headache. Boo...
Anyway, tusks added:
Giant forehead blade - yay or nay?
Here's my thought on sponson dakka, just tacked on for now (obviously needs orkifying too)
Adding some big shootaz - well, stubbers. Any thoughts on how to orkify them - big muzzles maybe?
And a couple of shots of where the supa Kannon would go - obviously will need a proper mount etc, and indeed a chunky muzzle. However, is the principle sound?
Other than adding a few more plates, and a top hatch, howdah's largely done - or does it need a couple of stubbers and/or another lobba/Zappa?
Maybe, or indeed another battle wagon tusk out the top. I had considered, alternatively, making it the seat of the ork with SM pinata. On the plus side, found some big shootas after a rummage in the box, which look much better than stubbers.
Funnily enough I am slightly soggy, though from wife drool (nothing NSFW, just asleep on me watching tv).
Stoked about 60 though, so thanks! Need to get back to doing stuff...
