I've just set up a minecraft server on dakka's (massively overpowered) backup server. The first 3 people to respond here with their minecraft username can help test it and build the initial stuff. Once it has been running for a few days I'll open it up to dakka users with a sticky thread in this forum.
Good luck you guys I don't have access to multiplayer yet (I've had to save up money for something else), but when I get it I'll certainly play on the server.
Deathklaat wrote:is there any good place to find info about minecarts?
im still trying to figure out if you can use a minecart train with boosters without any flying off the tracks if/when they bump eachother.
im thinking if i make a single rail with boosters for going in both directions and i have a water channel for them to land in so they dont bump and then they drop onto a track loop and the powered minecart just pushes them around into a holding area and then into another water channel to space them out for re-launch
What booster are you using?
Try using this one:
TT------------------------TT TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
TT------------------------TT
T= Track of course - = empty
I haven't tested it for trains but it allows both carts to act as transport and booster at the same time allowing two people to move at once. When it reaches the end they loop back and go back along the track again, indefinitely even by themselves. I'm not sure if anyone has come up with it yet, but I originally made it for bridges. Courners seem to work as well so perhaps it can be developed into a loop and allow a train. They also seem to build up enough momentum so that if one cart stops the other could continue on. I have not had an issue with one flying off the track yet, but I think the shorter the track the more likely it will be.
well i had bit of a breakthrough experimenting and learning how to make boosters. i started with a simple oval loop with a booster in the middle to boost me as i went down each straight track. then i tried the single direction auto-return. i found out that powered minecarts cannot be boosted at all while storage minecarts can be boosted.
it was at this point that i started testing multiple carts on the same track going in the same direction so i made my auto-return booster shorter. the issue i started to have was the timing of when to get the second cart going to hit the booster before the first hit the booster. apparently my loop was too short and the carts started bouncing off eachother and then it happened. i took my boster cart off and i noticed the other 2 carts were still going around all on their own.
they were not linked up like in the super-collider booster, there was a visible space between them. i added my booster cart to the mix and it kept working. it wasnt untill i started bouncing into the carts did they link like the super-collider.
i think im going to use the supercollider as my actual engine for my minecart train, i figure if i have a switch at the stations then the engine can go into its own closed loop untill it is needed again.
Sometimes they just build up enough momentum to keep going for ages. Sounds like it will be cool. I'm guessing you'll be using wood pressure plates then for the switch, maybe having a button at the station itself to bring it back out to the cart. Also might be worth looking up some of the failsafes people have made for their minecart systems. If I remember it correctly, using a stone plate at the end of the station. If someone is in the cart it will be enough to push it down and the cart would continue along the track, but if it's empty it just goes back into the pool waiting to be called out again. Being in single player the whole time I haven't really needed to make something that complex. I just have a dispenser filled with minecarts and a cart or two in my inventory.

im thinking of using a stone pressure plate for the switch. if i put an empty cart for me to ride in as the last cart before the pusher carts my weight would activate the switch, i would use a button to call the pushers again when i am ready to leave. i have to see if storage carts do anything to stone pressure plates. i am also thinking of making a track switching area so i can move my train off of the main track so if need be i can call up an empty cart to go from base to base.
So our Dakka seed dakka world is progressing nicely, we have a floating house, an underground tunnel system, a floating island (Seriously, so many floating areas on the dakka seed) and my mountain top castle known as the ghosticle. I have to say, anyone who isn't on it yet, has to get on- madness and fun is to be had.
Spent all night making my own flying island castle when there are plenty of floating islands already in this world...because that's just how I like to do it, apparently!
Tomorrow it will be all about adding waterfalls to my floating island castle!
To play the full version offline you just need to get the right files on your PC, this can be achieved by simply using a premium account on said computer.
However MP requires that you use a premium account to play.
Incidently, that slime pit was going to be my version of the Sparta bottomless hole. Only thing was when I tried to fill the hole up I fell in. Ah my luck is impeccable.

The software is quite buggy and already died of one memory leak. If it keeps happening, I'll set up an automated reboot every 6 hours or so to help it stay operational.

you missed it, but you can join anyway. It's open to all the other dakkanaughts now.
Still can't get onto the server.
ghosty wrote:Out of interest, does anyone know why my Minecraft occasionally black screens and won't respond?
Don't know why, but I get that too. In fact, the last time I tried playing, it was happening every couple of minutes, rendering minecraft completely unplayable.
legoburner wrote:The software is quite buggy and already died of one memory leak. If it keeps happening, I'll set up an automated reboot every 6 hours or so to help it stay operational.
If I remember correctly, from what I've read (I was looking to start up a server once ), one of the current causes is slimes. Something about how they update their state when they die or something like that. One of the fixes just seems to be to either stay away from where they spawn or dig a small hole and bury them in it. Not sure if it's been fixed yet though.
Still a bit before my net fixes up so I can join in the fun, but did they ever fix the memory leak problem with the minecarts?
I've altered the server to reboot minecraft every 6 hours, so if something goes wrong I wont have to restart it. There is a bad memory leak in the software that keeps crashing it at the moment (every 10 hours or so).

Now do you see why I culled them in such numbers? They are an abomination! They deserve nothing but death!
I just hid in a hole because I was trying to find a non-Tunda biome... and when day light began, I waited for the zombies above me to be killed by sunlight, and then dug my way out... only to be attacked by FIVE creepers . Two fo them died from the first explosion thankfully, ad I managed to live through it through the skin of my teeth..
nice.
One managed to get though my door the other day and i spent five minutes running from it though out my entire house and eventually managed to get it stuck in a hole, it exploded and wiped out several block unveiling a cave syetms, with at least 10 of the buggers. Blocked it all up and now have to be carful where I mine.
Someone on the server needs to start and expand the community tree farm, with the rule that any tree you cut down, you plant a sapling back in its place.

Oh I know, but I won't be able to connect for another month or two anyway until I get the money to pay for it ^.^ Thankfully I found out my FAFSA application went through so that should free up some money that owuld normally have went towards tuition.
Just thought i'd list off what we've made:
-the sanctuary- main building.
-tree farm
-storage room
-crop farm
-animal farm
-tower
-pools
-interconnecting tunnels
-several strip mines
-floating mountain lair
-mountain castle lair
-lava and glass floored lair (with fireplace)
-ladder to the roof of the sanctuary
-several small castles
-underwater lair
-notice board
-dog and slime kennels
-guest room
I'm just going to raise a concern on our multiplayer world. I'm not really a fan of the massive tower we have at the sanc. I was going to ask other peoples views on it. Eyesore, or Eyecandy?
ghosty wrote:I'm just going to raise a concern on our multiplayer world. I'm not really a fan of the massive tower we have at the sanc. I was going to ask other peoples views on it. Eyesore, or Eyecandy?
The lava is a useful tool for finding our way and it has a nice viewpoint from the top, though it could look better...
It's the number/string that's used to seed the random number generator the worldgen uses; saves with identical seeds will have identical geography, at least to start with. I'm not sure if later chunks are generated the same, or just the initial area.
ghosty wrote:I'm just going to raise a concern on our multiplayer world. I'm not really a fan of the massive tower we have at the sanc. I was going to ask other peoples views on it. Eyesore, or Eyecandy?
Definitely an eyesore, from my point of view, but the purpose of it was to help people find their way back to the sanctuary if they go exploring and for that its pretty good.
I personally have a lot of OCD restrictions I place on myself when creating stuff in minecraft...for example in my own world I'm very careful that everything I build on the surface kind of fits into the look of the world...my main house is basically a hollowed out mountain rather than building a structure up from the ground. I also try to stay away from using cobblestone unless I'm building something that I want to look out of place since cobblestone is not found in the natural environment. I also like wide tunnels and tall rooms, so I tend to stay away from ever building a path or hallway that is less than 2 blocks wide and 3 blocks tall.
But in dakka-land we have to accept that there are a lot of differing personalities working there and they all have different cares and desires about what to build...that's just the name of the multiplayer game. While I personally don't care for all the random giant structures that are being built around my floating castle, so be it. I chose to make my lair close to the spawn point so I knew it would get like this.
Once I'm satisfied with my floating castle, I will look towards making myself something much more far flung and away from the rest of the peeps...a country home so to speak!
yakface wrote:Once I'm satisfied with my floating castle, I will look towards making myself something much more far flung and away from the rest of the peeps...a country home so to speak!
Its amazing the natural beauty i've found in traveling. I'm currently making myself a kingdom in that rightmost section of the map, found a U shaped valley that works quite nicely.
Is there any chance we could get runecraft on the server?
I understand that some of the runes have nasty griefing potential, but even just turning waypoints and teleporters on would be a huge advantage when it comes to staking out territory away from the main crowd.

yeah.
Obsidian is awesome, we found a desert on the OTL server and made Mumra's pyramid out of Obsidian in it.
On the eyesore issue, my house is sporting a large wood tower (wood, not planks) that i'm slowly but surely trying to surround with actual trees (I think tree, dirt on the top piece of wood, sapling in that, rinse repeat should work), it's quite far from the spawn, but just need to see if people have noticed it/don't like it.
As it stands i've spent most of my time on it and lost a forest to a pyromaniac *cough*shrike*cough* that was supposed to fuel the wood for it, so I really don't want to tear it down unless I must.
Also getting this error:
Failed to connect to the server
Connection refused: connect
Minecraft servers seem to be fine, but this happened on the last MP world I played and I never managed to get back onto it, there was nothing that was visibly wrong on my side or their side, and the mc servers could not have been down every time I attempted (it would be very unlikely, I tried at different times of the day most days for about a month with no success). Might just be nothing, but i'd really like to get back to my projects.

creepers were climbing it and getting through our defences! it had to be done! I've given you loads of saplings and wood, and it wasn't JUST me...
the treehouse is too tower-like- have it similar to the tower above the sanctuary. (no corners)
I'm also getting that connection error.

As Lego has mentioned, the Beta code for multiplayer is very buggy and constantly crashes. He has the server set to reboot quite a few times during the day to hopefully prevent it from being down for long, but I'm sure its possible for something else to go wrong as well if its been down for a significant amount of time.
Doctadeth wrote:I love the Dakka SMP world...only thing is that my place is so out of the way that I get pounced on by mobs.
Yep, build an underground tunnel to it from the spawn, that's what everyone else has done...just use one of their tunnels that goes in your general direction and then split off when needed and create your own tunnel.
Also, if you're online when I'm online I tend to skip the nights using a command code unless I'm underground digging away. So if I'm online and night comes and you want to skip past it just send type me a message and I'll skip the night for you. Conversely, if anyone is online when I am and WANTS the nighttime (to get some string or gunpowder, etc), just let me know and I'll let night happen when requested.
Nice to finally get on this morning, built a nice little tree house east (i think) of the sancturary and explored the area around it. Already fallen into a rather large cave, still I can't complain too much I did get 30 coal and 26 iron out of it.
crashalicious. Rebooted. I'm going to change auto reboots to every 3 hours which will be a bit annoying when it is working, but a saving grace when it is not.
Hrm. I wonder, can the admin create blocks, such as netherrack, for his/her players to use?
Seeing as we can't get into the nether to get it normally and all, it might be nice to have a netherrack chest in the spawn sanctuary for those of us (such as me when I finally get the money to buy the full game) that want to make netherrack fireplaces.
We need a self destruct sequence for when the creepers and zombies finally invade...
Hollow out the area under the sanctuary and put like 100 blocks of tnt under it, and inside the walls... with a red wire going to a button that says do not touch!

Nah, that's be impossible.
Quite literally, the physics of the Nether are different from that of the overworld. There's an ambient light everywhere, the fog is red instead of blue or black, and lava flows further than on the overworld.

as you can tell, I am slowly replacing cobblestone with lime wool.
Just spent an afternoon enjoyably creating a HUUUUUGE castle. I've spent well over 500 cobbleblocks, and probably an equal amount of dirt. Moved about 100 water as well for the mob trap.
What now?
Finish the last 2 floors and the observation post. Add the astrologer's hovel (circular tower with a glass roof) to the side of my fortress. Add in the furniture, so bedroom, workroom and storage room (2nd floor). The 3rd floor will be for PVP practice fights. 4th floor will either be a farm or tree farm. Each room will have a fireplace and I will also add an incinerator (lava).
Then finally, dig out the waterway next to the fort, and add a shipyard!
EDIT
someone's griefing on the server....and I am going to find out who did it.

Wasn't me. My place seems clean, cept for the lack of arrows in my dispenser (again.) Honestly, either people are using my dispensers as free ammo dumps, or someone is being very dumb, and keep walking into the shots. Bah.
My non lethal bottomless pit is fine as well. I think everyone should have a jump down it. It's a roller costar ride of fun!

Sorry bout the arrows. I wanted to look at your house, and got mad at the arrows for killing me, so I took them out. I'll put them back ASAP.
Had great fun on the server, everyone is friendly and talkative. Concerned with an issue which requires me to leave/join the server repeatably as after i destroy blocks they re-appear, this is either from:

we have launched an inquisitorial investigation. someone wearing default skin tried to set fire to nick's tree house. He's not too bright because he lit up the wrong forest xD.
Also, I do backup the world every 6 hours, so if there is ever major grief, all agree to stop building and I can restore to a previous version if you all notify me on here.
Murray, most likely your net connection. The server is based in Germany, and if your ISP has packet loss (wireless connection or bad wires), then that will cause you to drop out a lot. Hopefully they will improve their client and server code as time goes on!

Mn, constant packet loss is why I switched back from a wireless mouse and refused to switch to a wireless keyboard.
Perhaps this is just a case of someone accidentally setting the forest on fire and not wanting to be kicked off the server or otherwise ostracized due to said mistake.
If this is the case and it was just a mistake then as long as it doesn't happen again then there is no real problem here.

I need to make a more traditional underwater base than the ones I usually make on my offline account.
Usually to me underwater base is literally a base that is entirely underwater-- a submarine base effectively. But I need to make a base that has one story above water and then a ladder leading down to the bottom. It'll be easier to find without being as ugly as a glass tower.

That's lag compensation. If you're lagging too much, it decides that the action you took didn't make it to the server, and so undoes it. It should really prioritize sending actions more than loading additional chunks or whatnot, as SMP is completely unplayable without a decent internet connection...
legoburner wrote:I've made a mini-nether / nether in a room so there is a source of netherrack/soul sand/glowstone if you can find it (actually not very hidden)
Give us a hint... need glowstone sooo bad!
I found and Stripped it. If you need Netherrack, just ask!
the IP is web2.dakkadakka.com (just enter that and it converts automatically).
The connection reset issue is either you connecting just as the server gets reset, or the Internet connection between you and the server is too poor. The server is in Europe, so is quite a long way and the minecraft code is very buggy so if it keeps happening, it might not be possible for you to play until they update the code.
Finished the 4th floor, now for the obs deck, and also finished the dividing areas between the two oceans. Probably will wipe the islands near my house.
Then furnishing begins and I am also looking for about 12 or so glowstone blocks for use as a torch substitute.
Perhaps we could convince lego to have some sort of script that refreshes a chest in the sanctuary so that it becomes full of glowstone dust, soulsand, and netherrack every time the server restarts?

Would be too easy...
I like having a hidden nether room to find and mine.
But then once it's gone, it's gone. And new players can't get any more.

It is already gone
However lego has mentioned a next time, so it will probably return in some form
Yeah I will make another in the next few days but bigger this time, and even more hidden. I am thinking 3 signs with clues about the x y z coords hidden in plain sight, then the nether room hidden somewhere you need to dig to find.
I originally found the nether room, but then died to glitched slimes and unreliable Virgin Media internet after 120:1am, so I called it a night. Guess I missed out a bit
Why is my computer so glitchy with minecraft!
Also, I'm building my underwater dome close to the spawn/sanc. I'm tired of getting lost without being able to provide cords more than once
Wooden half blocks are always fireproof. It just takes twice as many blocks to make the same amount of full blocks out of wooden half blocks. Still makes for a fireproof house.
It's a pretty simple reason really. Wooden and cobblestone half-blocks are just recolors of stone half-blocks, and aren't actually new objects-- basically, stone has a damage value of zero, cobble has a damage value of one, and wood has a damage value of two... and sandstone three. The numbers might be off, but that's the general idea anyway.
I hate the lack of wool I've finished one sail only to find out it's too small and then I have another to do. oh the poor sheep will be tired of being punched for their wool.
got a cool idea, have events every now and then with reward loot (like diamond pickaxe etc) - similar to the nether idea but doing challenges as well... could be interesting
I saved a bunch of swords from the cave, and I put them in the armor chest
I almost saved everything, but the waterfall lagged me into lava, so a bunch of stuff is still in there
The sign means "I shan't be playing on this server as it already has lots of stuff on it" but in considerably less eloquent terms, it was probably placed on the nearest building so someone will see it.
Whoever keeps making holes with no stepping stones had better cut it out.
I feel into a smooth hole and lost all my stuff because a zombie chased me in
