Well, while I'm waiting for Yidhra to dry in between sculpting layers, I've started on the next project I'm really excited to start onto....

A big orky steam-powered Stompa-type Gargant.  So far I've built the steam/fuel/power tank.  No Drozzy, I haven't gotten to the rivets yet.

Here's some pics:

The concept pic:

Nice so far. Where are the 2 concept bits from? The first I can't ID, is the second a heavily converted dreadnaught?

The big pic on top is from an artist over on CGsociety.  The pic captured my imagination, looks like it should be big and orky.

The other pic is a conversion from over on Cool Mini or Not.

I am definitely going to suggest you riddle this guy with those little steam valve-clock-like-thingies, um, like on here:

Wouldn't be too hard.. just use little circles or some green stuff, paint a dial on, dab of varnish, voila

RIGHT!  Done some more work on this and gotten a camera to it!

I'm in a bit of a quandary as to how to make the model look a bit more coherent.  I like most of it but the overall appearance is lacking something.

The arms are going to be interesting.....

Nice. The plastic bits of the engine are a little high tech in shape, though; are you going to modify them?

Looking great. The only thing I don't like is that the engine looks to b emagically sitting on the waist. I think you need some come kind of piece to join the two. Perhaps something that looks like armor....

Perhaps even something taht looks like an Ork version of a Roman leather and metal "skirt" to protect his waist. They would have seen that on all those ultra marines they keep stompin.

More updates as she goes.  I've made an arm, and I think I'll leave it at one for the sake of orky "balance", added some skirting and stuff.

Only problem is I think the arm is at a bit of a goofy angle.  I'm not sure how I'll be able to fix that....it's pretty well anchored in there....

Size comparison with Inquisitor Lord Coteaz:

One thing that I kinda do like about the pose is that it gives it a "B" grade 60's sci fi movie robot feel....kinda adds to the orkiness I think....

Nice. The plastic bits of the engine are a little high tech in shape, though; are you going to modify them?

I haven't quite gotten to that part yet, I will be ork-ifying them some more though.  I just need to get the majority of the superstructure done before I am ready to complete the fine details.....yeah I know....there's been plenty of extra fine details added though..

Thanks for the comments and thoughts guys, this one has been a bit hard in spots.  One thing that's making it hard is running out of plastic tubing...I think I can stretch it though...

I been toying with a head idea for it.  What I might do after playing around with ideas today is put a head on the front of the top section and then the pilot howdah across the shoulders.  That may work.  I was originally thinking one or the other, but I think that combining both could work.

Here's my current pics:

And the spaceman head I toyed with...lol

It's funny coz with that head it's got the whole moonwalk look to it

WOW!! That thing is looking sexy! The pose, the style, everything, way to go! One thing, the head... yeah... not happenin. Ditch it. All of a sudden it looks less like a war machine and more like a kids toy.

The head...lol yeah it's there as a joke...

I've just had a brainwave, I think I'll make a half bowl for the cockpit and mount it slightly forward of the main tank area, with a pilot or 3 mounted in it, like this pic:

And then I can paint or build the goofy ork face beneath it similar to this pic....

Well....I've spent the day stuffing around with this beasty and all I have to say is....actually this isn't all I have to say...lol

Wow I really like the model of the hoese and the cow you have. how did you make those??

KOKE nice looking model. The head looks good. There seems to be alot of cardboard on this model. how does that stand up to waer and tear?

Steam Stompa @ 2007/08/09 09:15:17

Post by: Lemmingspawn

I don't have a problem with wear and tear on card. I soak most of it in superglue on the points of wear and then give it a good layer of undercoat (not too thick, but thick enough) and that seems to do it. It's a case of making sure everything is built sturdy.

Here's my work for today.  Starting with the Effigy of Gork that assisted me with my motivation:

Without whom I surely would have fallen asleep

And the work I have proceeded onto:

Rivets galore, although I still have heaps left.  Other things I am contemplating are adding some more glyphs, and perhaps a large orky banner.  Not sure if I want to add these but I am thinking about it.  The reason I'm not sure is I'm already reaching the edge of excess.  If I go too much further I reckon I'll go over that precipice....

Anyways, more tomorrow.  Hopefully tomorrow will see it ready for painting.

There is no such thing as excess to an ork. I've never heard mention of a gun that was too shooty, or a trukk that was too fast, or a boss who was too big. This is a mighty steam powered war machine, it should have great whistles and and long chains decorated with the remains of fallen foes. A chaos titan you would not even be questioning the illogical junk you'd still have to put on it.

Orks are creatures of excess. There is no great cliff where putting on too much detail will suddenly ruin this masterpiece. The only thing that is stopping you is your own ambition to paint this machine.

Cool stuff, way more cooler and creative than anything you could ever make for an Imperial army.

Steam Stompa @ 2007/08/15 18:59:50

Post by: Lemmingspawn

That's why I like orks.

I understand about the excess thing, I'm just a stickler for making it work as an overall piece. I've been playing with smoke stacks, guns, panelling and a few other things but I think I'll be leaving it after the rivets are finished, with the option for the megastrap-on killdo.

ROIGHT!  I've done the finishing touches, but I'm not sure about the big ork skull glyph on the front.  Let me know if you think I should take it off, I think it's a bit big....

I originally had a smaller one on there and it looked fine but this one, I dunno....

And here's a pic with the other big machines in the army so far

Steam Stompa @ 2007/08/16 16:36:23

Post by: Kid_Kyoto

Looking great.

I'd take the skull off or move it. This model looks a bit distrubing (in a good way) with one arm and no head, the skull looks like a half-hearted attempt to give it a head.

Steam Stompa @ 2007/08/16 16:51:27

Post by: Lemmingspawn

Yes that's EXACTLY whats wrong with it, I just couldn't place why it looked weird. Done. I've moved it and put a little one where the big one was so now it looks like a glyph, and moved the big one to the side and it looks heaps better. Happy again.

Once the glue dries I can then set about undercoating this beast and then painting won't be far off.

Steam Stompa @ 2007/08/16 17:12:29

Very cool. The skull glyph is just enough to make it orky and still look like a giant kan.

GRRR.....I needs some assistance....

I've been doing some painting of the beast and I am sorta unhappy with how it's turning out.  BUT the problem is, I can't think of the best way to colour panel it before weathering.  I suppose I can just keep pushing through and then wait until after the weathering is done, but I can't visualise how it's gonna turn out properly.  Any ideas on where I can panel and what colours?  Thoughts are welcome:

Steam Stompa @ 2007/08/21 15:50:54

Post by: Mr. Bombadidaloo

How about 'weathering' on the color in parts, like an old faded-red barn?

Also, I'd use scorched brown as the base for reds, yellows and the like. Too much metal here, it takes away from the model :-|

Steam Stompa @ 2007/08/21 19:59:15

Post by: Lemmingspawn

I was really wanting the yellow parts to be the main areas, coz I liked so much how yellow worked out on the Ripley.  It seems now after I've painted it some more, red is the best dominating colour, and I had to add touches of blue because it wasn't working without it....hmph....I wanted to try and go more yellow lol.

Anyways, I've added some more panelling and stuff in the various colours, I was thinking of doing the railings in yellow, so I think hazard stripes might work there (if it doesn't drive me NUTS).  Here's what I've done today since posting the first pics:

I know it's gonna come together heaps more once I do some more weathering, this is mainly the basecoating period for this model....so far....

Steam Stompa @ 2007/08/22 11:10:06

Post by: Frantic

I would suggest trying different shades of metal, because them mekboy builds something, he doesn't just take a bunch of completely new steel sheet, he uses whatever he has at the moment (and steals that he hasn't at the moment from other mekboys), so if you could make some metal plates to look rusty, others to look blackened from age, give some of them brass or bronze look, improvise, because now it's looks too uniform for orks.

The red and yellow are vallejo Gold Yellow and Bloody Red, in lots of layers.  Lots and lots of layers.

Just a quick update for todays painting before the weekend hiatus. Just to show where I've removed a majority of the blue panels, leaving the stuff that looks like it's been ripped of a passing Ultramarines tank as it is, and then washes and floods of dirty water (paint) to weather it down.

Oh.  And scratches.

Lots of scratches.

Yeah I kinda liked the head too, but it took away from the section I wanted to dominate the piece - being the central tank. So it had to go. I still have it to cool my drinks though...

It certainly isn't very mini, base and all comes in at a smidgeon under 12" and painting takes just over 3 times the amount of paint I've ever used on a single model OR squad before. The weathering is proving to be a relatively slow process, but we'll get there.

Copper and brass will definitely be coming later.

Here it is, todays work.  1.2 million layers of weathering later and I'm halfway there (with weathering).  Now I have to rehighlight the reds and yellows to bring them back up a bit, although most of them are close to where I want it.  Some of the panels went really streaky which is weird considering most didn't....  how that works I'll never understand....

And the wife said I had to do checkers.  So checkers I did.  No checkers = no sex so checkers are good! lol...it's not really like that but I thought it would be funny to say....hehehe...especially to see the look on her face when she gets to read this....

My rambling is over and here be PICTURES!

Steam Stompa @ 2007/08/26 21:31:50

Post by: Hellfury

Always listen to the missus.

The checkers are keen.

They provide a very good optical illusion to show more texture without adding more texture. IMO, you should have added a small bit o' checkering on a panel on the cannon side.
But then again, its not something you want to overdo anyways. Its prudent to do too little than to do too much.

On the subject of weathering and colours.
Red and yellow are an obvious predominant theme here. (with a minimal blue)
You plan to add bronze/copper/brass.
The bluing could easily be achieved with a base of copper/bronze and weathered verdigris. (sort of like that blue-ish fly wheel in the front, but with a copperbased metal as a base)
Red could be achieved in places with harsh rust.

With orks, corrosion is your friend.
In this case, they are harmonious colours and united by nuance, atleast according to colour theory as I understand it.

Well, you'll all be happy to know I've taken the camera with me today to give you some more insight into my progress on this beast.

Getting close to finishing but I still have a lot to do.  Once the orks are done there'll be abundant touchups left.  Anyone got any ideas on how to paint asphalt with lines convincingly?  Destroyed.... of course....

Steam Stompa @ 2007/08/29 20:09:42

Post by: Lemmingspawn

Rightio, I'm fairly happy with it enough to call it finished now.  I could probably spend days picking out little bits and trying to make it the ULTIMATE PAINTWORK OF EXCELLENCE but frankly.....I'm getting a bit bored with painting this.  So it's done.  Except for the fact that I am considering putting snow on the base.

The idea for the snow came from when I was making the road.  I used salt as the texture (that's a WHOLE other story I wont' go into right now) and while it was drying, it looked like snow.  And it actually looked quite good....it made the model stand out more instead of disappearing into the junkyard base.

Can't decide atm....lol

Anyways, here's the orgy of completed pics....(first a mega-strap-on then an orgy of pics?  What next?)

Junkyard steampunk, FTW!!!!!

Nothing says "Dis wurks cuz we sez it wurks!" like this model.....ahhh, only in the Land of Ork-believe....

I know that its obvious that I would say this, but that verdigris is damn hawt.

Damn, I love this model.

I do soooo love geek porn.

By the way, you should send pics of this to the person who made the pic that inspired this creation. Nothing says flattery like blatant plagerism, with a twist.

Thanks heaps guys for your kind words. It was heaps of fun to build, and a bit challenging in places to both build and paint. I had a couple of games today with it using VDR rules, and all I can say is - My stompy likes the taste of Imperial Guard!!!! Mmmmmm, taking out 3 lascannon squads with a single pieplate sure is TAAAAAA-STEEEE!

Steam Stompa @ 2007/09/01 09:53:04

Post by: Orlanth

Three squads in one hit, what 'pie plate' are you using, dustbin lid?

Awesome work man!! you brought new light into my small mind, orks meet steampunk!! Im gonna go make a looted howls moving castle right away!! XD

Post by: Lemmingspawn

When I say squads, I mean lascannon and crew based on 60mm bases. Positioned really well so that I could pieplate them.

My favorite part is the hand.

Hopefully you'll get to use it when Apocalypse comes out.

Steam Stompa @ 2007/09/06 21:23:36

Post by: Lemmingspawn

Yeah, I've already had a go at it using the current VDR rules (which makes it more expensive than it will be in Apocalypse). It kicked arse.... verily....

Thanks for the comments, guys. I've loved how this one turned out. Moving on to new projects now ....

Thanks for the link to your other orks as well! Wowser! Super cool army there. I could look at them for hours picking out all the cool little details on the bases and such. Major kudos!

Dood I am speechless now I see it finished. It's illeglally cool!!! Top notch work with the painting and metallics, base, the whole lot.

You have now a folder in "best modellers" folder on my laptod named after you.

And of course - we want more!!!

The thing that impresses me most is how quickily you went from concept to creation, very very impressive work even if it had taken 4 times as long.

Worst part is I am torn between so many cool projects....lol

ATM I have the new Chaos army deal box, some havocs and a dread that I am wanting to start on an Iron Warriors mega cheeeezzz army of cannon doom - just for fun - with walking vindicators and the like. Then i have a concept pic for a cool ork battlewagon, the zep to paint, 3/4 the army to paint, sisters and mucho numeroso stuff to get into.... Sigh....

Here's the final pic of stompy:

It ain't magnetised, but the reason is it's SOOOO much stuffing around to try and get them into the right position and stick them in place. I just couldn't be bothered now. But you get to see them together.

Mr Stompy should be making his debut appearance in a spanish modelling magazine soon, hopefully. It's only a relatively new mag starting up called "Rings of Fantasy" so we'll see how that goes. It'll either be Ripley or Stompy, and maybe my termies later on. But we'll see how that pans out and if they like my articles.

Excellent!

Just curious, was that a specimen bottle you left on your desk?!

You can take it from me, you don't need a drug test buddy you are definitely on something gooooood.

Edit: If that's a GW tire on the base, rip it off! It uglies up your perfection!

Steam Stompa @ 2007/12/14 21:56:16

Post by: Lemmingspawn

Lol, I haven't seen anything made by GW big enough to come close to that tyre. The stompa stands just on 12 inches tall...

Aw, man- beautiful! It looks like a walking oil refinery, and is the most original design for a walker that I've seen in 40K. And the paint does justice to the modeling, too. Nice work!

Love the Killdo. I hope you get more than you are asking for... that buy it now strikes me as a little low. Mostly because I was sorely tempted! Not knowing the conversion between AU$ and US$ off the top of my head is the only thing that saved me.

Post by: Death By Monkeys

Right now the conversion between AUD and USD is pretty close...Closer than I would've liked when I was in Oz over Christmas.

lemmy, why are you selling this beauty? I thought you had an ork army whre it fit in?

I need the dosh for music gear mostly. And I have plans to build another of a different...difference... lol

There's also some things on this one I'd like to improve on, so they will go into the next one. When I finally get to it...

I still have to paint this:

and the rest...

Steam Stompa @ 2008/02/27 16:34:54

Post by: Wehrkind

I needs me a new PC for the Dawn of War expansion, and W.A.R. in particular. My 6 year old machine spirit is about to give up the ghost, as it were. Not that I have been spending much time gaming as opposed to painting and modeling, but still, I needs me some animated Sisters, so hard.

Still... 450US$ isn't too bad for a giant model I don't have an army to use with, and that I would be scared to let out of my sight for more than 5 seconds...

Because the thread is 7 months old! Yeah, it's cool, but you're wasting my bandwith for a "Kewl dood!" comment on it.

you sould make a clicky on lemmings page that subscribes to him, once done every time he is selling something it sends you a message
allways miss it :K

The thing is, if we all keep bringing the really really really (x 2000) old threads back, it gets real annoying real fast.

The top page is generally considered to be the only one on which anyone can post. Once the thread goes more than seven months dead, pretty much the only one who can legitimately bring it back, is the thread creator, if he´s got new stuff to show us.

Oh, and that´s not specific to this site. Necro-ing old threads is a nono on most forums out there.

(Sorry for the rant.)

You can go with a small craft punch, buy them or cut them off square and round rod.
