Thanks Jan, really appreciate the feedback.
So update to the LoER comp, Portal.
Decided it needed a bit more definition to the building, so........
Took some sintra board.
Carved a little detail into it.
Bit of glue and paint...
Added a couple other details, like steam and foliage, the foliage is an experiment in making my own, bit of work to do yet.
Thoughts appreciated, soon be done now I think, want to add some scatter about the place.
Thanks for looking.

Post by: Camkierhi
To explain...
This lot is from Sedition Wars, no idea about the game, most people don't rate it, however I was picking these sets up at less than ÂŁ20 each. The figures are not bad, and the terrain pack is definitely worth it.
Here's some pics of the set etc...
The terrain pack, just look at the sack full of doors you get...
Scale shots, in amongst that lot is a Space Marine and an IG as well as the Deadzone guys I am going to use these models to supplement.
Thinking that this could also go for Tyranid scenery at a push, when I come to the Strain models most I think will easily go for Plague for Deadzone, with a little houserule interpretation.
The other models will probably easy enough go for rebels or PDF men and women. They are not the best casts at times and are a real pain to get the mould lines on, thus I am not trying too hard. They are game pieces for me more than anything so not too worried. Might try and clean a couple up for dios, they have some patential. See below....
Sorry about the blurry pics just really noticed.
I recommend the models, though they are a bit of work, no idea about the game.
Thanks for looking.

Those things look like some D&D monster, an aberration type of some sort. They'd also make great alien world jungle terrain.
I learned with the cheap plastic stuff to ignore all but the most severe mold lines. It's good to hear you have come to the same conclusion (great minds and all that ) I hear some people have luck using sanding needles to clean the mold lines.
I hope you are finding these a nice change of pace. Variety is good.

Thanks guys, agree with the potential.
And now for something else....
Got some supplies and got a wonderful gift from my beloved...
Gift...I have wanted to do this for a very long time and today I unwrap this..........
A Frikin Skaven Army! I have always loved them, used to have some a long time ago, been doing other things for so long, but always in the back of my heart was these. No idea how these work out, she just bought a bag of 80 off the net and this is what came. Might look at them as a KOW army, just going to collect lots and worry about usability later, she has no idea what she has started!
Other supplies....
So some paints, some new to try like the BFTBG which I like, used on those alien thingy bits, me like very much. And had that Composi-mold for some time, felt it was a bit expensive at the time and have been a bit afraid of it, but now I have tried it and WOW! Me like very much. Also you can see mould making gear, different again from my usual stuff, a silicone and resin. Only tried the resin so far, like it.
Will have a bit of an update as to works in progress later, but thought I would share.

I always consider you special WP.
OK slight deviation hope you don't mind...
Shipping containers, plenty of games out there with these as scatter, and they can easily be used for so many systems, I am sure someone out there is producing these nice and cheap anyway, and Vik beat me to the punch the other day making some excellent containers, quickly and easily. However, here is the Camkierhi method.......
Made some parts, just scratches in sintra board mostly, but was not 100% with door end, so redid that after the fact, mistake on my part, but actually not too bad..
Made up the container..added a little more detail, was not going for big depth of detail on this one...
Made up a mould, first made the inside simply filled the inner void with silicone, did bulk this out with old moulds cut up into little pieces, so not as inefficient as it looks. Then made a box from foam core and hot glue and made the exterior mould by hot glueing the model to the bottom.
When placed together....note the paper clips used to "float" the inner.
After I had cast one up was not brilliantly happy with the doors, so as seen above made a PC door section and made a mould..
So end results...
Door comparison...
And they are hollow...
I will get one painted up later, but what do you think.

Produce these in large numbers and sell them via eBay, you'll earn yourself a neat new income...reasonable priced containers are seldom seen in the web...I really like the details you did. Especially the doors look way better than my own version. I bet your way is quicker too...and that floating bit is a genius of an idea! Really looking forward to see these hitting paint...for comparison I will soon be able to show my first five containers too

And size comparison shots, please excuse the really terribly painted rhino...
Would like your thoughts, is this something people would want, are they good enough as is, I mean is it reasonable to expect people to do a little patching, and thinking of something like ÂŁ5 + postage, is that too much?

Post by: Viktor von Domm
Five pounds I think is reasonable...don't know where you stand with materials costs...how many will you be able to chuck out of one mold till it gives in? That should determine the price tag. I think they're perfect for something not done by 3D design...I would produce a first batch of ...say twenty of them pretties and test the market...maybe go for 3,50ÂŁ to really get the crowd itchy for them and afterwards raise the price to fully get them on a profitable income level. My only head scratching item is the beefy rail on the top...was the height and thickness needed? If not, there I see future tweaking possible...other than that...make a million copies and earn yourself a fortune with these...!
And I like your spraying letters and the weathering!
30672
Post by: Theophony
They look brilliant also a great canvas for your tagging skills.
If you can afford those prices for production I think you are good. I ordered some last year from a guy in South Africa who makes them from hard paper for around $5.50 each and shipping was actually more reasonable than ordering something from the war store. Shipping was fast too, but assembly took a while and yours looks more sturdy and is hollow for gaming purposes so I think you win out there.

They look great Cam
Love the wayland sign on them

They look excellent. Would the plan be to sell them raw or painted?
To truly get a reasonable price you need to anticipate all material costs ie. Casting material, disposable gloves, containers, mixing sticks etc. an estimate of how many parts the mould will produce before needing replacement and then amortise the cost of those materials over that many parts. Then consider how long you spend making moulds, casting, cleaning up and decide on an hourly rate you want to achieve and that will give you your labour costs for a unit. Then decide on the margin you want to achieve.
Sorry you probably know all this already but this sort of thing is what I do for a living so its second nature to me.

26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
I like them Cam. You definitely need to figure out how much they're costing you in materials to build, then work in a bit extra for your time. Once you have that number (which is your absolute minimum)... consider if you can raise the price a bit to make all that effort worth your while.

Good job on the painted peoples on the previous page and the sculpting of the big rat/ogre/Minotaur/thing.
Nice job on the containers too.
As for pricing, the only thing I can add is look around for what other similarly sized models are sold for.
While you can't compete with large model-making companies for pricing and quality (you are but one man after all), they do serve as a reality check in case you are either over-pricing your work, or under-valuing your effort.
Don't be afraid to start high and come down if there's no biters.

Let me start off by saying that I like the cargo containers. They look good. I also appreciate the technique that went into producing them. The insert to save resin, and especially the rounded end on the plug to make it easier to remove.
Archer wrote:They look excellent. Would the plan be to sell them raw or painted?

Archer is right. It may not even be worth it to make them for other people.
I stopped casting for my friends and gaming group when I added a modest $10 an hour labor to my equation.
If you only have the one mold, you can't produce them in batches, significantly increasing the time you spend producing them.
It simply may not be worth your time to produce them for anyone other than yourself.
LaserCutCard Containers, laser cut from sturdy cardstock, offers 3 for $13.84, 11 container deal for $28.63
Underground Laser offers then in MDF for $10 each
Armorcast Offers them in resin
Iron Heart Artisans offers them in MDF for $10
Warsenal offers them in MDF for $12
Warmill offers them in MDF 2 for 15 pounds
You're looking at a market price of about $10 per container.
I don't know what the curing time is on your resin, but even assuming your using something with a short cure time, say 15 minutes, your total time including prep, mixing, pouring, de-molding, and cleaning is probably somewhere around 30 minutes per model, with a single mold.
If your material costs are above $5 a model, it's not worth it for a product with a $10 retail, and that's only paying yourself $5 for labor.
A $10 retail may not be even realistic. There is a lot of competition, and while your model looks cool, it's still an amateur production.
GW's cargo containers (3 for $50) are more expensive, but feature detailed interiors, much better detail, and additional pieces (guns, crates, and barrels) for roughly $17.
LaserCutCard's containers are $3-$5 each depending on how many you buy and they look really good..
We've not even discussed other expenses like Ebay fees (10%), Paypal fees (10%), or the time and gas you'll spend driving to the post office to ship them, packaging materials, etc...

Well deserved against some serious stuff
I'm happy to see what you managed with the Sedition characters - I never got around do do anything with mine. I find them too...blurry, not sharp enough, and compared to a IG trooper or an Eisenkern, they are tiny...
Hard to expain them, no matter how good the fluff
Well, the shipping containers are ACE!
There are some improvements suggested, like the roof for better positioning of models.
Honestly, after I had worked with a Third Party Boardgame manufacturer for a while, I wnat to give you bit of a warning.
Mixing hobby and earning money was a real hobby breaker to me. And once you sell your pieces, people change.
Once they spend money, they simply want perfection. What they have praised while it was for free, is all of a sudden a faulty product as soon as they put money down.
Happened to me often, and honestly I'm the same.
If I pay for a product, I want it to be perfect....no bubbles, no warps, straight and crisp lines etc...
Just a bit taling out of my "treasure trove of my experience"
LOL

Wow, Cam. So much to catch up on for me. Looks like you're getting some good advice on the marketing. Once you start selling, or doing commission painting, etc, you no longer own your own hobby time. That can be very uncomfortable, and a real creativity killer.
Now the rats... best way to deal with a rat problem is with a Jack Russell Terrier or two. ( I have one, but no rat problem. I do have a squirrel problem though. Jack Russell Terriers cannot climb trees. That may be a good thing.) The rat ogre looks promising.
The shipping containers are very good. Nice solution to keeping the plug in place.

the shipping containers look excellent
however, I disagree about the idea of doing them for sale
It's not that I don't think they're not good enough for it, I do. I simply don't think you'd make a profit =/ which would suck big time. I suspect strongly you'd spend more time/money getting them out there, then you'd get back in return. To add to what adamsouza mentioned, about what's available out there, there's also Reaper's some what similiar Shipping container.
All that being said, if you decide you want to go ahead and do a kickstarter or some such, I'm in ^_^

Thank you all for the most brilliant advise. Originally never started out as a "for sale" project just for myself really. And given all the advise I think I will leave it that way. Certainly there was never going to be a mass marketing, but a few to cover the cost of the next batch of resin would have done me. Also a big thank you to those (looking at you adamsouza in particular, but others too.) who unlike me got their google on and found some that are already on the market, GW's are a big surprise to me, when did that happen.
I will take the advise on the ridges on the top and try altering my mould to do a flat roof.
Having said all that, I will happily do a few off for people for my usual Dakka discount if they really don't mind them being so amateur, not too many mind, basically make good use of the mould kind of thing, so if you fancy one or two PM me.
Now on to other things I think, I have been so busy IRL not even sat down this week, so need the coming weekend to get some ME time in.
Thanks once more, your amazing guys.

Thanks all, really appreciate feedback, working on basing at mo.
Not had much time or mojo for me models lately, little work done.
Still PIP on these guys.....
Trying hard on these guys now, sculpts are not brilliant, but no excuses.
Yet another side project...friend who does some Military Modelling put me on to a site called Accurate Armour.
https://accurate-armour.com/
Good stuff, prices are maybe a bit more than most would choose, but the kits are really nice. Can vouch for this as bought this...
Now me being me, I will obviously be using this for a chassis for a IG or Ork Truck, but really like the detail. Chassis was ÂŁ20 and it was ÂŁ9 for the set of 5 wheels, I really like the wheels, they look right, skinny enough to be realistic. Any ways, have a look, one thing I did get from them is a couple sable brushes, I think they are well priced. And I will be investing in one of the micro saws. Not sure I am about to buy a fleet of chassis from them, but it gives me ideas.
Anyways, thank you for looking in, hoping to get a day tomorrow sat painting, hopefully see you in the morning.

The chassis looks incredible. Agree completely about the wheels as well. Very interested to see what you come up with for it.

Post by: Ruglud
Hmmm, what size are those wheels - diameter + width? (didn't see the measurements on their website...) They could potentially be the answer to my 'dragon truck' problems... Nice detailed chassis as well, can see lot's of potential for that as a base for some scratchbuilds... (any chance of some measurements for the chassis as well?)

@ Ruglud, Wheels 23mm high, 5mm wide Chassis is 120mm long and 45mm wide without wheels.
Scale shot..
Some time ago I got this brilliant haul from Graven for my winning the last LoER comp. Some fantastic bits and pieces, really chuffed, Thank you Graven.
So I rooted through it for inspiration today, and found these bits...
And a bit of work later ..
Blurry base coat pic...
Quick word on the gold.... Had this pot for ages now, think it is a very fancy emulsion, however...
And a layer or two on a blue/black base...
And here is where I am now....

I always loved the old skaven sculpts, so much better than the newer ones in my opinion. The blue color on the night runner sculpts looks great, looks like it would help disguise them well in the dark.

@Theo, spot on, and thank you sir.
@Josh, They are nice, apart from the nasty mould lines, (don't look too close.)
@ Gits, thank you sir, much appreciated.
So first Taking my time and trying desperately to be subtle skaven....
Then on to the things....
OK quick notes on how I am doing this, totally stolen from the giants (Nerdy etc.you guys know who you are!)
This has had a prime of GW Zandri dust, then a dark green wash put over the green bits and a flesh tone applied to the rest.
This is with a dry brush of gold on the green.
Then a wash of dark green again, this time it was a little more intense, it was ork flesh, watered down a lot.
Blood red watered down and washed over the flesh.
Tamiya Clear red watered down and washed over the fleshy parts.
Tamiya Clear Red watered down and washed over whole thing.
And his partner in crime...same treatment...
These are still work in progress, and I will be going in and adding the details, still a bit more to go on some of the green bits i think, not sure.
Appreciate your thoughts.

Nice tutorial, Cam'. Good effect on both the blood and candy armour. Good job on the rats. I like the colours. I know you like feedback so let's look at the cloaks: As I said, I like the colours. but the black to blue would benefit from being wet-blended, reeeeealy smoothly. Especially as it's cloth, with lots of creases. All the high points would look very nice if picked out with blended highlights when framed by the black recesses. But all that is probably too much for table-top armies, there are a lot of creases. Keep up the good work.

Post by: Camkierhi
Thank you all,
@ Vik, generally, Archer has it spot on, most people say go for Milky consistency but it depends on the paint and the effect you are after. I am so far from an expert, you may be better asking one of the big boys, however with my little set up, I have 2-3 drops of water in the pot first then add 1-2 drops of paint (or one paintbrush full for GW) I mix it in the pot with a paintbrush. Do a little back blow mixing as well. Just stick your finger over the end of the brush and gently open the trigger, it blows bubbles into the paint and mixes it pretty good. Then I am away. I am very rough and ready, and loads of people use specialist thinners etc. I just use water. Got a tub full of windowlene glass cleaner to one side to clean it. It does what I want it too at this stage, and I am happy enough with the results. I never currently spray anything other than normal paints. GW or Game colour for the most part. The vallajo ones are very good. Hope that helps. Still think you would be better asking one of the proper painters on one of the popular blogs, would get more answers there.

Nice looking converts to the IG for Trenchers. Capitolian troops from the old Mutant Chronicles. Carapace armor so they would be grenadiers. Very cool Horned Rat

Still think you would be better asking one of the proper painters on one of the popular blogs, would get more answers there.
actually i was more interested into peeps opinions and experiences that are not pro´s as your perspective is more in tune with my own... so your hints i can better relate to...pro´s mostly have expert point of views and also often demand big setups...which won´t happen here for a millenia^^. so these kinds of hints are greatly appreciated! i wont ever probably use alc as a thinner too as this sets my risky bar too high... water... i can work with that... the whole powered brush thing is something thats using up my concentration and reactions and thus going chemical is a step too far^^...currently i have some diffuculties with getting coverage, but i am working steadily on that... for now i have built a neat COD ruin and mostly worked with the AB for that one...probably will update my thread later on to show my works...
this: Got a tub full of windowlene glass cleaner to one side to clean it. needs more explanation as i am not understanding how the setup might look/work...and might any window cleaner work? brands work differently and well...you brits have so much lovely cleaning stuff it seems^^
Now what have I been doing......
My son wanted a new bed, so smashed the old one up and made this...
Going to furnish this with orks..
IG shelf looking bare, going to work on that...
Fantasy shelf looking bare, definately going to work on that....
And one day I will finish this....
Started on these Friday night, progress later...
They are these.......
Had them for years, just feeling like them at the mo....
OK back later, off to finish judging the LoER Comp, really making my head hurt....
Thanks for looking,.
cool....i love the idea of themed shelves with a painted backdrop! very cool!
also...very promising start on the warzone minis...didn´t knew these heads with these hats tho...i have plenty of the old starter box soldiers still in sprue...for one future day to start a renegade chaos imp army...
also that giant rat...totally scratch build ? the GS work looks amazing!
cheers, vik!

Thanks guys,
@Vik I will do you a proper write up shortly, promise. In the mean time I believe any of the vinergary blue style window cleaners will probably work.
Thank you all for your comments.
Tired at mo so progress shots and off to bed....
Still very PIP.
Talking of which started on another model, trying to be brave here, first proper attempt at NMM....
He is still very early stages, barely what I would can a Base Coat.

Nice re-use of the bed. Can you dust-proof the shelves somehow?
Quick word on using window cleaner. Stop. Just use a dish-washing soap solution. Cheaper and ultimately better. A bit bubblier too. Smells nicer than the window cleaners.

Looking forward to any of your tutorials mate! Always enlightening to read!
Wooden stock looks very promising already, somehow these trenchers tho scream Mounties to me, so I would have expected a more reddish color there than the green but as true trenchers that would be highly inappropriate...
The nmm is already there, still comic like but after some more progress you'll achieve a cool new step in your painting career!
Dishwasher vs windowcleaner...sounds like a clean battle to me
Hmm the choices...

Nice work Cam'.
Good effort on the nmm. Pretty effective.
The gold is a little bright compared to the rest of him at the moment. I know he's not finished, but maybe look at balancing the relative brightness of his face and beard area to the gold in that area.
The gauntlet could maybe do with a little more contrast to make it more steel and less grey.
You're most of the way there though.

And still lots to do on this one but progress....

perspective fools me to see the hare in the rat
i like the verdigris tho!
as for the dwarf...i am sold on the NMM what i still feel fishy about is these piercing blue eyes...
also...the gore and blood you nailed this time...stunning to say the least...still also, the vegetation of the base looks very convincing!
the trenchers...i think some eyecatching spot color is needed....or if already there didn´t catch my eye.....

I really like the dwarf but I would hit the hair up with a thin orange or sepia wash - it's a bit close to the nmm for my taste. Also, Dwarf berserkers just should be ginger (although I think they'd be great with blue hair and woad too).
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
I think graven's got the right of it. The gold NMM gets lost in the hair. You need to set the two apart.
62749
Post by: Dr H
Yeah, that's the ticket on the Dwarf. Great job.
As mentioned, the hair is now a bit close to the gold.
Also, the hammer needs some sharp, bright highlights to match the rest of his bling.
The gauntlet is brilliant.

Man, I absolutely LOVE those shelves! Brilliant idea! The Dwarf is badass, I'm not been brave when it comes to NMM. I really dig the warzone dude pointing at the thing his subordinates are supposed to shoot at.
72556
Post by: Red Harvest
Extra layer of white highlighting on the high spots of that hammer. (or white with just a touch of yellow). You won't be disappointed by the effect. NMM is all about very strong contrast.
And... a cheap trick for gold. Some people use a purple wash on the shaded areas. Give that a try on an experimental piece to see of you like the results. It's a quick way to up the contrast.

Post by: dsteingass
Looks great! Can I make one small suggestion? Some more shadow between the metal and flesh would help crispen the contrast.

Just popping on really to say I officially give up on Dakka Gallery. Dwarf has to be IMHO one of my best works, really tried to nail the NMM, tried hard on the other basics, such as skin tones etc. And please do not get me wrong I do not think it rates any where near a 10, Nothing I currently do does. Admittedly it only has 2 votes, but I thought it slightly better than a 6. Don't really know why I do it to myself. Put it out there and think "wahoo! I got a vote!" and then boom down you go. So no more. Forgetting the whole "be a better painter" kick. Simply not worth it. I accept it, I say it enough. I am not a painter, not bad at scratching things together and that is where I will stay.
This is not some plea, or whining sad muppet, it is me genuinely accepting and giving up. Spent too much time wasted on it.
Don't worry, or maybe do worry, those few of you who do come around here, I will be back soon with more nonsense, just not trying to improve my painting any more. Now how do I dip a tank?

Please kFWIW, I have 894 images in my gallery, none of which have enough votes to actually show a ranking. I get my feedback from the half-dozen Dakkites who post in my p-blog, and that feel much more personal and valuable than some number ranking. Keep posting your painted models here and I (and others) will continue to admire them.
48594
Post by: dsteingass
Yeah dude, don't worry about the Dakka gallery ranking system. It doesnt mean anything. Your problem is you stopped having fun painting. When that happens, it's cool, don't EVER stress about it. Just do something else fun in the meantime. I can ALMOST turn out a pro-level tank paintjob, but my figure painting is abhorrent. It's no big deal, every time you paint, you'll lean new techniques, and improve. If you are looking for return on investment, either monetary or results per hour spent....then you're in the wrong hobby. The -=]_,=- Votes you 10 rivets.

Don't give up on the gallery. Just disable the voting. I always found it amusing that I would be asked to vote in the painting of a WIP of some sort.
And almost finished with your LoER entry? Geez, I just found a possible idea. Too fast, Cam. This hobby is not a sprint. Slow down and enjoy. (But not so much that you are as slow as I. )

lol, one of my best ratings is on a WIP pic. Wet paint even. It makes no sense.

Post by: Camkierhi
Thanks
I will be posting my paint jobs still, and though I will be disabling voting on my pics from now on, I will still vote in the gallery.
It's a childish thing I am not very proud of. Your feedback here has way more meaning, but I have been trying to get my painting "up there" for nearly 2 years, since I entered a comp for fun I thought after, "I can do that so much better" and have tried repeatedly. I have had successes, but mostly, a glass ceiling I cant get past. It is frustrating. Unfortunately one of the few ways of measurement on my work is the gallery or competitions. Both are very popularity based, which is against me. I realise I am being childish and that irritates me even more. I do not do this for gain. In any form. I do it because I enjoy it. And Dave you hit the spot, it stops being fun, if you have to do it. I do all this to escape a crappy real life, and I guess the feeling that I might inspire someone to do great things. And this is where I get a kick. But I get so silly and childish when that bloody gallery messes with you, or as recently entered a comp, which turned out to be a popularity contest and little to do with the work on display. It is not that I expect to win, or even be in with a chance, but after 2 years I appear to have shown no improvement.
So, I will continue with my modelling and I will paint the best I can, but I am giving up on the "must improve." The system is too harsh, and too bias.
A genuine thank you to you guys, you mean an awful lot in a sad little world that I live in. Please keep coming, and please forgive my childishness.

Don't let the man get you down. You have an awesome base of regular readers to your blog so you get a lot of quality feedback. It's more of an achievement I think to keep a group of strangers entertained and continuously returning for more. That's something I think I really struggle with. Keeping the readers entertained so they keep posting.

If voting on the Dakka Gallery (42,001 times) has taught me one thing its this:
Paint critics are... everywhere and there is a large proportion who really don't understand the finer details of what techniques have been applied and how much work the painter has put into it.
I have some of my pictures set to be voted on, however I care not for the actual ranking, the best feed back is from the blog stick with it
48594
Post by: dsteingass
You can't "give up" on an abstract concept such as "getting better". You will improve with time. Trying or not.
You need to not care about the gallery. Or popularity. These are constructs that you can "give up on" or just choose not to use.

Hey Cam dont be so hard on yourself about your painting skills, I took a look thru some of your work and can definitely see improvement. In my opinion you have some mad modelling skills, your trench is grand! If you were closer to me and Gitz I would want you to build and paint up a bunch of buildings and terrain. Most of my home made terrain stuff is old styro foam painted to look like "something" ;-). Your dwarf is a great piece of work, you should be proud of it! Keep painting it only gets better with age, plus its a fun past time.

I've said most of what I need to through PM, but I've got more...
This is a hobby for the majority of us here.
Hobbies are meant to be fun.
Those that partake in an activity as a hobby are not professionals.
If you like what you are doing, and are proud of what you have achieved. That is all that is important.
A scoring system, however good (or bad as the gallery is), is no substitute for that.
As to progress;
You have been progressing. It's not easy to see up close as we all are to our own work, but it's there.
Also, the more you improve the smaller the increments are in that improvement.
Like you, I've not felt like I've improved much in the past year or two. But it is there, if you really look for it; little things.
And as evidence I present you and your (really quite good) attempt at nmm. Would you really have thought about attempting that a year, 2 years, more, ago?
Trying a difficult technique is a clear sign that you have progressed.
Don't do it for accolades (oh, and how many contests have you won? I rest my case.), do it for fun.
