Edited this post to hold the new pics then added my snipers below in the topic.

I'm working on a Nurgley traitorguard army and have experimented with some Sentinel paint schemes to start it out. Why a sentinel and not a trooper? I dunno.

Tell me what you think and please comment/criticize. Thanks! I'm a lurker usually but decided to get my camera working for once.

Thanks for checking it out and tell me what I need to do to improve.

wow! imperfections really show in the photos... hah!

I made it magnetic just for fun. that way the sentinel top rotates and I can swap weapons or whatever. Please let me know what ya think.

I'm using a mix or Vallejo Model color and GW foundation paints for just about everything. It seems very difficult to paint Nurgle and make it look rusted and rotten or slimey but not have it look too sloppy. I'm having a hard time trying to reach a happy medium with the rotteness of nurgle and not the "sloppiness" of nurgle..... sigh...

Thanks for the reply. Anything that you see that needs vast improvement? I can't seem to get satisfied with the model so i just finally made my self stop and say: It's finished! even though I feel something is wrong or missing.

Honestly the only thing I can think of is that it's possibly just missing something bright to center your eye.

As to the approach, I think that's what more people should try and do. There aren't enough people willing to take the time and detail the models without getting completely stupid with the messy look. A lot of people think "Oh! Nurgle! I'll just slop the paint on!! That's how they're supposed to look, right?!" When that's completely missing the mark. You've found a very good middle ground that you can be proud of.

You might check out this army for another take on this style as well.

The pics don't show it well, but the piping on the pilot and the cotrol sticks are purple. A deep purple with a highlight of the new hormagaunt purple with sepia ink shading. The pilots eye lenses are the same purple also, along with some little power cables on the sentinel exterior. I went with purple because I like the way it looks with green and I only used it a little because if I over do it, then it will look like a Mardi gras sentinel I think this brightened flash pic shows the purple better

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a204/Nemissary/Nurg/newfiles038.jpg

Of course that bright flash makes the model look horrible as a whole. It doesn't look so darn splotchy to the naked eye and i have 20/15 vision.... so bleh i hate the way that looks in that pic.

I tried to stay away from the red contrast and stuck to purple just a personal preference I guess.

Do you think the purple is enough to draw the eye a little?

Keep ideas and comments coming!!!!

I really like the woody grain in the green panels. Not sure why GW associates Nurgle with wooden features, but you've pulled off the effect nicely.

The base effect is excellent. Did you cut out a hole in the base & then rebuild the bottom to create the pool? Looks like the pool is a perfect circle rather than a random & natural shape, but that could just be the camera angle.

Looking forward to seeing more of the army.

Thanks all. Any other areas that need vast improvement or changes? I'm working on 5 more right now to make two squads of 3. Then I will do a few troops choices ... then maybe a tank. I'm going to try to alternate troops and vehicles to prevent burnout.

I actually think the purple looks great. Maybe another highlight could make it stand out even more for you. But that's really up to how much you want it to "pop" (god I'm starting to hate that word...). As it stands now though, I really dig it.

As for the photo, I actually like how the photo turned out with the flash on that detail shot. It really gives me a sense of how you went about painting the model, and gives me more of a chance to steal the technique for later use ^_-.

Well, to be honest I was terribly impressed with your paint job and all of the attention to detail. In part I agree that there should be a push-pull light-dark color effect, but it is seriously not a big deal. Your paint work is pure ninjitsu as it is. Though the conversion work on the walker needs some serious lovin. Being as that as hobbists we have seen the chaos muzzles for something like 8 years and the chaos shield for qhite a while it is not much. The suggestion would be to push that aspect furthar. Make the model work match the base. Of course if I saw a guy put down an army of models painted and converted to these levels in person I would be so blown away with the paint job any lack of converting wuld be just nit-picking and not worthwhile. Once again, yer a frickin ninja!

The puddle was cut out of the base and then was rebuilt with greenstuff that I had mixed up and was left over. The hole in this one is mostly round, but not a perfect circle. I cut out some bases and not others on the Sentinels because I want it to be a little random. Most of them I just glued card from blisterpacks underneath and then smoothed the transition with green stuff. I didn't make any effort to make any of the puddles a special shape or not.

The conversions are just thrown together. I basically just grabbed stuff and stuck it together without a huge plan. I know the dragon heads on the weapons are pretty stale, but I DO like them anyway. The chaos shields are added to the weapons as an afterthought. Each and every sentinel is unique. I have bashed them all together with random parts and none are the same at all, not even the pilots. I think that I love to convert the minis but I did not get super technical or courageous with them on these. I did magnetize them all though

As far as the color contrats... I just can't seem to pull off a good "pop" effect that I am satisfied with so I settled for the small bits of purple. I kinda like the dark grimey model look that I am getting, even though it doesn't have that contrasting "pop" that make some things really stand out. I guess I like the more "realistic" (I know that is a bad choice of words) gritty feel. I also know that I will never win any goldem demons hehehe.... but oh well.

I will post pics maybe the middle of next week when I have the other 5 to a better level, comparable to this one.

thanks everyone for your comments.

I added the pics of all 6 sentinels above. I also have a few pics of my preliminary rotling snipers. Basically undead/diseased children that snipe form the gutters and work for Granpa Nurgle!!! they have big heads like real lil kiddies look like and all that I used Gnoblar bodies and zombie/skellie heads. the pics are weak but you get the idea and I still need to do alot of conversion. I'm trying to make the lasguns look all snipey too... just have to figure out how.

Comments and criticisms please!!

thanks !!

genius, dude! Sheer genius! As far as making them look snipey, the barrels off of Kroot rifles are nice snipey barrels. Or you could get some small polystyrene tube, one size slightly smaller than the other and make barrels with a long thin piese and then a slightly larger piece on the end. Of course stick some sights on it and you are done.

Thanks for the replies. I have been reading through the IG codex and just realized that I could have up to 12 sentinels in an army (3 fast attack and one attched to HQ) That is insane and tempting at the same time. I really must work on some footslogger troops first though.

I think my favorite pic of the sentinels is this one. Do you guys think it's ok to have some of the bases without water effects and some other items instead? I don't want all the bases to looks like clones.

For my little rotlings, I think I'm going to use brass rod to extend sniper barrels from the sawn off lasguns. I also think I'm going to reposition some of the arms to make at least a few of them look like they are actually trying to aim or shoot. hehe I should have some more pics of the conversion work on them by Monday.

In reference to the bases, I think you'll be fine if you don't put water effects on every one. As long as the flock colors are generally the same you'll be able to keep them looking uniform while still having a chance to break up the monotony some.

I think you need to worry a little less about the paint scheme, its generating almost universal approval.

Love the conversions you've done making each unique but keeping them recognisably sentinals and from the same units.

Also love the snipers. Fantastic idea.

Here are my Rotling Snipers. I added little toys and wind-up toys etc. on some of their bases to reiterate the "zombie children" idea. I also think Granpa Nurgle would want his kiddies to have fun

I still need to do highlighting etc. and some details. they are about 80% done atm. Give me some feedback if you see anything I should do or add, before it's too late heheh.

she had a nice purple bow in her hair and a dress.

This is Cecil. he is a little bully and the leader of the playground.

She has a wind-up Teddy bear to walk with her.

Links to the others.... they all want your brains... if they don't snipe them from your skull first.

grey_death: I'm making the glass in the scopes the same purplish color, so hopefully that will fit them in a little better. I may go ahead and paint some little patchwork cloth on the clothing in the purple also. Kinda like their lil mommies mended their clothing before Nurgle wiped out the city. I guess they would then look like little vagabond kids.

I thought of making the eyes a glowing purple... but I'm not sure just yet.

I haven't made a ton of progress due to family/holidays/work, but I have been wroking on one of my leaders. This model was originally going to represent my radical(fallen) Inquistor Lord. He is mostly bionic due to the rot. He has a skull floating in a shielded bubble on his shoulders. I made him to represent: bionics, refractor field, psycannon (or stormbolter with pys-bolts) and either a power weapon and/or a power fist (the claw). I like to play WYSIWYG, but I also like my models to be versatile. I think I could use him as a senior officer with stormbolter, bionics, powerfist or even as a Nurgle marine. He is about a head and a haalf taller than a marine.

Well... I went for a 50's b-movie sci fi look. I am going to add tinted water effects in the glass dome when I'm done painting to give it a nifty feel... as if he needs the fluids pumping to keep his skull alive and well.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a204/Nemissary/Nurg/mini010.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a204/Nemissary/Nurg/mini009.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a204/Nemissary/Nurg/mini012.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a204/Nemissary/Nurg/mini013.jpg

I have done a test glass dome with several layers of different tinted water effects and the colors and feel came out just as I wanted, however, the curve of the glass magified the skull I was using and distorted it so I went with a smaller skull.

Let me know what ya think or if I need to add something before I go to primer stage. The glass is just sitting there and will be removed until paint is done.

Love the sentinals. All of your additions are characterful and make them look suitibly individual. My only gripe is the lack of apparent repairs. It'd be cool to see some oddly sourced feet and mismatched leg parts. I imagine the legs of those sentinals would be high-maintanence areas and as such they'd end up being botched by a bunch of no-good-traitors.

The rottlings are neat, but I do have some suggestions. The pointing guy's head is waaayyyy too big for my tastes. To be honest, the only heads that seem to work on the models you've but together so far are the two with the skull showing under torn skin. All of the other heads are far too large. This is especially true of the bare skull guys. I'd try the Brian Nelson skulls. Check out the human skull that comes on the fantasy Orc boy sprues. It's more aestetically pleasing and a bit smaller. Actually I've got a better idea! Get a hold of the skulls Brian made for the new Chaos warrior sprues. They're nice and small while keeping the detail you'd want for these guys. Throw some rotting flesh on and you're golden.

As for the question you had about switching up the base styles... Go for it. Just keep something consistent across all of them, be it the grass or the colour of the rocks, whatever, and they'll look great.

Keep up the good work.

Consider that floating skull idea shamelessly stolen! Wait! Before I shamelessly steal your idea: where'd you get the bubble? Looks like something from an old-school miniature lightbulb (before leds replaced tiny filiment bulbs ).

The skull is from the fantasy chaos warrior sprue.
The shoulderpieces are from the Ork Bionic Jar thing on the old sprues. (trimmed up a little)
The chest carapace is from the new chaos possessed sprue (hollowed it out)
His six-pack abs is a trimmed doem Catachan torso
His bionic claw arm is from the tech/combat servitor models.
Each of his legs is from a different marine leg set. One is a techmarine and I dont remember the other.
Backpack/powerplant is a Sisters of Battle pack for one of thier heavy weapons... flamers maybe IDK.
The right arm is the bif beefy Catachan arm with a fantasy chaos warrior glove and weapon attached. (I may replace the weapon with a Scythe)!!!!
The gun is a trimmed down stormbolter with the barrels cut off of the front. The new barrel is made from a trimmed down mortar shell from cadian IG heavy Weapons sprue.
The shells hanging out the side of the gun is a random weapon bit... don't remember what sprue.

The glass dome is an automotive light for import cars. I got a pack of two from Advance Auto for less than 2 dollars (US)

I need to finish the belt area and trim the neckguard a little. I guess I can beef up the cyber arm a little. The human flesh arm is stuck at that size... I added it and the "six-pack" abs to make him more bizarre and abberant looking. I kinda like the ungainly freakish look that has come from it.
I may add a few more tubes or power cables i guess.

Drake_Marcus: I intentionally gave the children big water heads. I wanted them to be slightly comically proportioned and eerie at the same time. I'm trying for a nice Nurgle mix of freakishness and sillyness. (hence the bubble fishtank head etc.). I do have the smaller skulls, but i just thought the zombie heads were funny and sometimes I see big headed little kids running around the elementary when I pick up my girl and I think of "bobble-heads" so... the army is kinda subtle comedy mixed with absolutely horrible things..... just like life!

The Sentinels coold have had some impromptu repars on them.... they were my first models for the army and kinda test dummies for my color scheme so I just rushed the simple conversions I guess. I do have 6 more sentinels to work on... so I will add some shoddy traitor repairs (thanks for the idea ). And, since all of my sentinels have magnetized legs and weapons, I will be able to mix the repaired legs into some of the current ones and then some repaired tops into the good legs and add some balance !!! ya!! that's the ticket!

Thanks for the feedback so far guys!

Now, with the water effects...is there any technique to make them look like they are bubbling? That would look even grosser!

Dez: I wish for a way to make little bubbles coing up through the water effects, but I am stumped right now on how to do that. I thought of tiny clear beads or better yet, translucent white beads but I connot find any small enough.

I have replaced his sword with a scythe to make it a tiny bit more Nurgley. I have also been working on his belt area and almost have that done. When I get a little paint on him, I will post an update.

I have started on my first troops squad. I am approaching the troops with a different idea than just a huge swarm of clones. I am trying to do each ten man squad as a unique warband. Kinda like a Mordheim warband or Necromunda gang. Each figure will be unique in some way.... and each squad will be different from the next. This is taking some time, but I get to do alot of little conversions. Some of the conversions are more inspired than others..(i.e. some are very small conversions) but I can't help that with the sheer amount of minis I have to make.

I have been out of the loop for awhile. Very busy for holidays and then work has been even busier. I'm trying to get back into things with this army and have been converting some troops (about 30 so far). I also have my mutants that I have worked on... unfortunately LaTD has gone the way of the squat. Should I change out these guys weapons and add them to my Imperial Guard traitors? I was thinking of dirtying them up some, add lasguns, and rebasing them for use as standard troops. Let me know what you think.

That skink head on the deamonette body is one of the most characterful conversions I've seen in a very long time, smartly done! The rest of the army is also disgustingly beautiful. It really is a shame LaTD has gone the way of the Dodo, this is a flagship example of the huge amount of care and effort that can go into such a force.

Rargh: The colors are just the citadel blues with blue ink over them I believe ice blue was the final highlight which is a very stark contrast to the dark blues, but I blue inked it again and toned it down.. The green skin tone is one of the light blue greys of citadel (current paint range but name escapes me) an almost white color but its a blue... anyways I just mixed that light bluish grey with green ink and made my own paint pots full of it. Sorry I'm not more specific with it, I mixed those colors up a very long time ago and they just sat in the pots for at least a year.

@Anung Un Rama: I have not painted the b-movie leader yet. I have been in a scuplting mood for awhile (when I have time) and have been making new models for the aremy here and there. I will eventually get into paint mode when I have about 50+ troopers made up. The whole steampunk, cyberzombie, cthulhu mythos, Nurgle, traitorguard combo of troops is taking some time to make each one individual.

I still have not come up with a suitable name for the army .... kinda having a creative block there.

Ok! here are some more pics and links to my muties. I have decided to revisit them and reconfigure them slightly to fit my traitorguard army. I think I can alter them without ruining them. (at least I hope). I need to dirty them up a little and maybe touchup some/alter some of the paint scheme. I don't think i will be doing that much resculpting or bitz swapping except some of the guns.

I've seen some bitz-bashed armies before, and they usually look pretty poor - this puts them all to shame. The consistency in the quality of the modeling as well as keeping the modeling and painting thematic are really making this project look incredible. An entire army of this quality will not only be characterful, but a joy to play against.

Thanks for the positive reinforcement peoples!! I'm still going to dirty them up a little and add in some grays to counteract a little of the brightness (but not all). OK. Here are some very wip traitorguard. They are a kinda zombie-ish/tech, cthulhu mixes.

I have been working on these a little and I am going to make them blend somewhat with the muties I have posted. They will be a little grittier than the muties, but the muties are going to get some things gritted up and some battle damage too. My hope is that they mesh almost seamlessly with each other by the time I'm done.

These guys are kinda the original squaddies that were with my renegade inquisitor (the bionic body, glass jar headed guy).

I think the muties are just conscripted abhumans/mutants that were used as meatgrinder frontline shock troops until the went renegade with the help of the renegade inquisitor and his cyberzombie troops. The zombiechildren snipers are and experiment in terror that the inquisitor uses to horrify imperials. etc etc. Thats the short summary of what is going on with the variety of troops in the traitorguard.

on to the pics:

I actually have a couple of Mad Donna minis that I may chop up. Thanks for the "black manta" comment. I kept thinkinh he reminded me of someone and I couldn't think of black manta at the time. I may now add a few things to him to make it a closer resemblence

@Boss_salvage. Its an old AL marine I made a couple of years ago... he used to lead the green muties in my LatD army. I never was totally satisfied with his paint but I finally just stuck with that scheme for him. I have always liked Alpha Legion. They are my favorites with Nurgle coming in second. My goal is to have 5 more traitors constructed. Then have all 30 traitors painted to at least tabletop quality like my sentinels. The leader at least half painted. the muties to have the appropriate weapons and weathering and all the muties rebased by the end of march.

Lets see if my caseload at work and family obligations allow this to happen... that and I have a few sessions for about $2,000.00 more tattoo work to get done

The green in the skin is a custom made color. I mixed green ink into space wolf grey. amd added a tiny bit of white to it. I used the same color with more white to do highlights. I also inkwashed at some point with green inks and then rehighlighted. I either did not write down the recipe that I used or it was lost in one of my moves last year. The color looks like a light mint color when mixed. Vallejo makes a color close to it.. its model color green grey (106) 70971.

Granpa Nurgle has blessed me with Diverticulitis and that has put me down for a couple of weeks. I have done some basic colors on the traitorguard guys and I have updated a mutant as a grittier color etc. I hope to have pics by at least this coming Tuesday.

I was given a suggestion on how to better incorporate my muties. It was suggested to have the horribly mutated guys count as Conscripts and that way they could be easily identified as not being the normal guard. Anyone have any suggestions on this or have any experience with Conscripts. Basically is it worth havine several dozen of them in my army?

Post by: Boss Salvage

You know about the abhuman IG doctrines, right? There are at least a couple that modify conscripts - 'beastmen' one, 'sub' one, etc. Forget what the rules do, think beastmen have a stat change and furious charge, subs give a 5+ cover save to those behind them or something (so hideous they have to be killed first, or something).

Conscripts make a great tarpit if you can find a way to make them Fearless or at the very least give them a nice, high Ld to test off of. 50 of them w/ 5 flamers at the front can be good to discourage assaulting opponents.

Boss - I remember seeing those at one point and time, but can't seem to dig them up anymore. Have you got a source on where those can be downloaded?

Post by: Death By Monkeys

Cool - yeah, I've searched for them on various GW websites without much success. I'll have to use a little more arcane web fu to see if I can track them down.

Edit: While I haven't found the articles with the points, I have found a couple reviews of the WD that talk about the different Abhuman doctrines you can take. The one probably most applicable here is Slave Levies - they get Slow and Purposeful (so can fire Heavies on the move) and Feel No Pain. Mind you, you don't have to use this on Conscripts. Also useful would be the Subs doctrine which never fall back and provide a 5+ cover save on units behind them (Conscripts are required for this one, though).

Here's the trick, though - to use any, you have to spend a Doctrine point for the Abhuman doctrine. Then you have to spend another point for the specific Abhuman doctrine. And in the case of a couple, like Subs and Homo Sapiens Variatus (the Beastman one), you also have to spend a doctrine point to buy Conscripts.

Thanks guys. I hope your search fu is successful. I have weak search fu skills, myself. I like the slave levies idea... hmmm would like to see more of that. I have no idea what WD these things were supposed to be in. I do however, own every single issue of WD from the past 9 years (US) so if ya remember what issue exactly, I may be able to dig it up. Thanks again!
