BLOG ENTRY 1
10.march.08 - "a whisper from the madhouse."

Shades of Grey

As I fight through the endless amount of thinking and making, ideas and failures, rethinking and success, all towards the grand old Royal College of Art graduation show in june, I have spent a few odd hours here and there thinking and sketching and writing about miniatures. Our gaming group is preparing for life after London - as my exile has affected others some too - with a nice dose of fresh blood in the form of the Dark Heresy. My little brainchild = =I=munda, a mix of Necromunda mechanics, Inquisitor rulebook and now RPG elements, will finally start with a model driven, fluff loaded and Warhammer 40000 Gothic beating heart. It's been a year in the planning, and now has 4 eager and modeling crazy hobbyists working towards a late July start.

Now what is this blog all about then?

Out of this year long back-burner thinking a new Golden Demon entry idea has emerged. It will be called the "Shades of Grey" and while I will not share much of it specifically before the event, I hope following and seeing some of the thinking process behind it, coupled with an in detail explanation and pictorial of the entry after the even might be of interest. It will certainly be a slightly different modeling blog. But what is a modeling blog with out pics of models? I dunno exactly yet - but I am sure there will be models along the way to (The TWAR Blog may soon get some updates! too), as the entry has a dual purpose for the Campaign too and there's a host of other small modeling projects relating to the campaign.

The weird thing about GD entries is that having done one, I actually earned a good deal and would do a number of things differently. The TWAR project has been another welcome platform to study different styles of converting, painting and basing and coupled with two more years of schooling, I feel the time is right to see what I have learned.

To let the dakkates in on some of the entry, I want to discuss the new Winged Vampire lord by Seb Perbet - because 1. I think it is a true landmark model for GW and has thus gotten me excited about GW metal model for the first time in ages, 2. It will feature superheavily converted and in a new context, as part of the entry. I kept looking at the figure from the few limited angles we got in the WD and noticed the following:

1. The parts/split for casting must be quite radical for a GW miniature
2. The proportions of th miniature are much much closer to the art work that anything GW has done before, on a roughly "human" sized miniature.

Having it in my hands have further reinforced this expression. The left leg together with the base is one part, left arm from elbow together with sword is one and so is the head, bat + a seprate wing - all the rest is in the body. The pose is super dynamic and anatomically exciting. There's the nice dynamic forward launching stance, but it is awesomely punctuated with a twist from hips to chest round the spine as an axis. (It will be a welcome challenge to sculpt animated armour to fit this pose)

The head is very small, the sword very fine, long, powerful limbs, and plenty of bulk in the torso, even more so when I sculpt on the armour - A touch of Dainton really. The model remains very Warhammer gothic, but has rackhamesque finesse about it...but really with GW art-like motion and drama, so it's a clear GW piece, and more dynamic than Rackham heroes too!

There will be a small tribut to the genius of John Blanche, whose creative productivity is at the core of Warhammer Gothic to an extent most people totally fail to understand, unable to appreciate his macabre, Vivienne Westwood influenced style. (Some may remember the Rosethorn/Eisenhorn entry I did, which a had leopard skin pelt for the same reason)

So this ModelingBLOG is about the ideas and thinking, of the =I=munda campaign, new GW models, converting, painting and finally a finished miniature entry, seeking to communicate the fabric of Warhammer 40000 Gothic. I would like to hear your thoughts of a modeling blog with just text and thoughts, to be then finished with the finished piece. Is it pointless? Should I just confine to my small group of online madmodelers? Only post the finished piece? Does it add to the dakka modeling blogs?

Any kind of brainstorming, sketching, or other work in progress you care to share is welcome in my book.

The thoughts you've laid out above are very exciting, but it's hard to tell how much attention people will pay if there are no images at all.

When do you anticipate having the piece finished?

Migsula,

I think this is an awesome idea.

I'd love to hear, and see the processes behind modeling, gaming, rules writing/revising, etc. I hope that you don't limit the log to just the GD entry. I would love to hear more about your =I=munda game.

Looking forward to more.

Will be watching the project develop. And I agree with you on the winged vampire, I was very impressed when I saw the first teaser pic, much more so than I expected I would be. Excited to see where you take him

Cool, thanks guys and good points too. Alas,

MBLOG ENTRY 2
10.march.08 -
Spoiler:
"everything you have been told is a lie."

This in many ways will be a "tale of four modelers who love to play games" (very much in that order). A group of friends, have decided to each build a showcase collection of models, with a strong theme for some evolving gaming, driven by coolness on a warhammer gothic scale and narrative. On top of varied and lethal NPC elements, 4 gangs are in the works. An Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Calliber Johann Harker (Hammer), Rogue Trader Extraordinaire Krikham (Gurk), Criminal Overlord X (Northen) and "Shades of Grey" (myself). (There will be at least 9 different NPC Factions too, each led by a dramatis personae.) The basic idea is to create cool concepts and fantastic models, then rules to fit. I have created an adaptive and expanding set of additions to the rules, which are a combination of Necromunda, Inquisitor and Dark Heresy. More of this later in the blog.

So:

Darkmunda Campaign for the summer

This coming July I will be Game Mastering an Inquisitor themed, narrative driven continuum of games based on tweaked and expanded Necromunda rules set. Initiative, cunning and situation savvy will be rewarded, cool models expected. There will be a strategic phase outside the games themselves, when the players need to prepare for future enemies, pursue the right trails, sometimes employ skilled noncombatants instead of buying more guns and generally outsmart the others. Bold, adventurous suggestion to the GM may sometimes be rewarded – or if deemed against the character they may back fire. Is it time to blow cover and induct a company of the PDF? Are you strong enough to harness the great enemy into a weapon against itself?

In tactical level, in the games players need to know when to fight when to run. The scenarios will reward teamwork, combination of right skills and equipment and fate to the Emperor or the Eight-pointed star if you so choose.

The GM will employ NPC gangs, of endless supplies of filth, or unimaginable horrors, or stalwart heroes – mostly to halt your efforts, sometimes to rip you apart, or rarer still to help you!

How does it start?

Starting right now – the players will choose a theme for their gang and briefly outline their character. In due time this will be expanded together with the GM, but according to the players wishes. The first theme will serve as a platform on which the team is shaped. Maybe you want a valiant witchhunter, with close ties to the church and possibly access to archoflagellants, maybe you are a thorian by nature, and decide to go radical in pursue of arcane lore and tools to bind daemons. Possibly the throne agents of the carcass Emperor are simply not your cup of tea, and you decide to steer towards the eight pointed star and promise of quick power, maybe you are a traveller of heart and choose to wear the mandate of a Rogue Trader – it is for you to choose, so choose wisely.

The gaming itself?

Will start in July 2008. The gang can consists of maximum 10 personae. You have 1500 credits at your disposal and access to any weaponry you choose – later you may seek or come across even more potent kit. You are not hive-scum – you are well resourced and extremely skilled. It may however be wise to save some cash for the strategy phase. Start-up rules set will be available soonish, but many rules will be tweaked and introduced as the gaming goes on.

Strategy phase

Everything goes, be imaginative, but true to your character – Dark Heresy will be mixed in! – fluffy and clever suggestions will be rewarded. This phase will see you rearm, recover, die from wounds, accumulate wealth, lose wealth, do detective work, pray for your gods and get ready for the next round. Sometimes narrative dictates your choises – you may need to go special condition or even, god emperor bless you – rogue!

GET CREATING!

This sounds like a hell lot of work. I myself made a 40k Killing Team/Mordheim Crossover which was a lot of fun and is now on ice but this makes me want to go back to work on it.
I think the only Text varaiant does the blog no harm. Go for it!

That good sir is the second name of my every modeling project! (or Hammers!) That's why it's been so difficult when I have zero free time to dedicate for it. Be it the Biggerised Marine army, or indeed the TWAR project - it's a lot of work

It's unfortunate I don't have a serious gaming group, or I would join you guys in making this a sort of 'world-wide' campaign.

This project sounds like an absolute blast and I may very well end up making a retinue of my own based off of this project, just for the fun of it.

Some folks will simply skim past this from it's lack of photos. But those who stay and read and learn and explore the possibilities will be rewarded with creative insight and a broader understanding of what it is to be inspired.

Thanks for the kind words Aaron! And believe me, I am working very hard to demolish the physical restrictions to getting together for great gaming/modeling - the damn teleporter is just bit of a challenge

If you find someone, you are most welcome to join! We can Ichat/skype the strategy phases.

BLOG ENTRY 13.march.08

Let me introduce you to the first of the "dramatis personae" and see some pics of my first Necromunda gang, from 2006 spring, March in fact! Such a great spring. I was working for my final project for a big company which was all fascinating and I had enough time to work on these guys.

I also played in a brilliant Necromunda campaign that sadly was cut short, by the disappearance of the GM. It's amazing how these individuals came alive with battles and it was a novel experience to do modifications to finished pieces, adding better weapons, blinding an eye that sort of thing.

I worked from grandma's place which was a balance of shutting off her ramblings + trying to concentrate and the delicious lunches

As for the upcoming campaign, 1st lead presented to the players:

Your agents/servants at Berdia have gone to great lengths to secure this information, expending great resources, both financial and bodily. Use it well.

Wow, that is great stuff! I like the bearded guy with the old hand flamer and the priest the most I think, but the guy with the pot belly and the shot gun is terribly amusing. I keep thinking of a Mexican guy I saw on like Animal Cops LA or something like that who had a junk yard. Looked just like that (only without the shot gun).
Is the little bloody guy in the middle with all the head trophies a bound Penitent?
I really like the yellow too. That seems to be a color that is award for a lot of people to use, either being oddly bright and garish, or sort of brown with yellow afterthoughts. It really fits together well for this group though, looking like a yellow color someone might actually wear.
Makes me want to buy the Necromunda rules.

Always nice to see your Necro gang, Migs

I was actually thinking of that INQ recently, as I was using something like 4 shades of brown on a model and recalled how many went into that one model of yours. Great stuff. Also refreshing to see an INQ not afraid to go to battle with just a laspistol and chainsword - though the man got a power sword upgrade in pretty short order, IIRC

Wehrkind - The little guy is just a misfit mutant errant of the Inquisitor. He is actually carrying a gang member, who was very unfortunate. So yo see his head sticking out of the bag, his lasgun stock etc. BTW - you can download the Necro rules for free from GW! The shotgun fatso is my fave in the group. Just one of those what if moments...I quite liked the Orlock figure I started with, but the way his vest was worn, just cried out for some "food". The head is that of the Bretonnian monk, carefully shaved.

Salvage - Yes he did! Good memory. I also bought him a plasma pistol just before the campaign died. I actually preferred the earliest incarnation, but he did get significantly scarier with the upgrades.

Wish you two lived closer and could join the campaign too.

That warband really has a lot of character to it. I am a huge fan of making each mini look like an individual but having them still look like a coherent group. You have done an amazing job of doing both. I like the small conversions and think that sometimes it is the smallest changes that really make a model superb.

BLOG ENTRY 26.march.08

It's all a little complicated

I'm almost done with 4 models on the subject matter, I show them to friends and discuss the ups and down. But it's rather complicated to discuss the work in a public blog when I am not really hoping to share the pictures with the general public yet. Thus the BLOG will take a little detour as I try to convince more of the campaign members share their work in this blog and hopefully discuss the general themes emerging and basing and other interesting modeling topics.

Lets see and bear with me. You will see all of what I've been up to by September of course, but the point is to make an interesting blog up to then

BLOG ENTRY 21st.July.08

Gaming has started!

for those who like the fluff side of things, I will post a full load down of what has happened thus far - but mainly this will be about models and since I've got no time for GD this year, nor really motivation to go, I can share what I've been up to soon. There's a local painting contest 8th of August, after which I am hoping all the players share their work here - SUBJECT TO INTEREST.

We have:
Northen - Viktor Styg, a syndicate operator (local mafia)
Hammer - Inquisitor Harker
Gurkmannen - Rogue Trader Krikham
and my little brother Pete - Inquisitor Gauer

It wouldn't be fair not to show anything, so here's a taste of things to come. Inquisitor Haag and his Mutants, my "was to be UK GD 08 entry".

And here's some of the fluff, courtesy of Hammer, Northen and myself.

The Jade Vessel

Ragoos, the Green Jewel of the Sector, a planet covered in oceans reels from the momentous after effects of the 13th Crusade. Three gleaming spires visible even to grav anchor, stand from the never-ending sea. Ardia, Berdia and Cerdia, the three hives providing existence for millions of loyal imperial citizens. Beneath the oceans vast, artificial coral reefs, the nutrition farms of the Mechanicus turn in a constant cycle of production and harvest, supplying the planet and it’s merchant fleets with the fruit of the sea.

But beneath the glorious face, the sub-sector capitol, the model of wealth and faith is dying.

Something sinister is eating through it from the inside. The stretched Planetary Defence force, weakened by the vast out flux of personnel and equipment needed to fight the archenemy elsewhere, is hunting cultists and heretics in desperation. A clash of dogma and personalities is ripping apart the Church of the Emperor, the guiding light of the people.

Sighar Sacront, Mayor of Berdia Hive, a ruthless noble with a lineage dating back to the first settlers 6 millenia ago, man who comes from a family of merchants, rogue traders and Navy Officers is causing uproar in the senate, demanding martial law and special powers to bring the planet back to order.

Drastic measures must soon be taken, for the Fabricator Captain Voltemans has threatened to employ the Skitari to secure the harvesting tubuloms and nutri-fung factories, in effect turning off the food supply, unless the unrest is soon solved.

Whispers and rumours bounce in the confines of the hab-blocks and work yards, the faithless minds walking in dark places, turning from the light of the emperor.

Somewhere deep within the underhive, something stirs, radiating with dark power, feeding from the death and destruction wrought by the 13th Crusade. The most dangerous minds sense it’s growing presence, the omens and the leads, and like vultures they arrive from all corners of the sector and beyond to find it, to destroy it, to claim it, to decide the faith of Berdia, the Planet and the entire sub-sector! Rogue Traders, Facilitators, Star Striders, Magoi, and the agents of the Inquisition will battle out the outcome in a secret war of importance beyond the understanding of man.

He is coming...

The Inquisitor and the guildmaster held their gazes, locked in a mental struggle. The eyes of the Inquisitor, blacker than the deepness of space, held the gaze, unwavering. The guilmasters golden eyes stared back, too stubborn to turn away.

“You cannot do this!” The guildmaster finally snarled, braking the eye contact. “Even you Inquisitors are bound by the orders of the Governor-General!”

“You will find…” Hissed the Inquisitor in reply, “…that our authority goes far beyond that of the Governor-General. I will have what I came for, one way or another.”

The guildmaster paled behind his make-up, but still too stubborn to quit, he glanced around for support.

The room held several masters of the various guilds of Bazarra, their servants and henchmen. The Inquisitor had arrived with only one man in tow, a scarred and brooding man bearing an interrogators seal on the front of his coat. Both men had arrived bare-handed, weaponless. Such was the arrogance of the Inquisitor, that the thought he wouldn’t need soldiers or weapons when stepping in the snakes nest that the guildhouse was.

Drawing security from the numbers, the guildmaster grew bolder.

“You cannot have the ship! You cannot just barge in and think that you can take any ship you want and to hell with our schedules and contracts! Our contract is with the Governor-General himself and he will be displeased for any delay in the shipments!”

Several other guilmasters started nodding to his words. He started to get bolder again for their support.

“So take your scarred dog and leave the house. Go to the harbour and find yourself some trash-scowl to carry you where-ever you are going!”

The scars on the Interrogators face paled and he started to step forward. He stopped again after the Inquisitor raised one hand in indifferent gesture.

“This is your final word?” He asked, his voice never rising from the menacing whisper.

Before the Guildmaster could reply, the Inquisitors hand dropped lazily to his side again.

There was a sharp cracking sound as the plas-glas of the sky-window shattered and a fraction of second later the Guildmasters head exploded in a bloody shower of gray matter and bonechips. A second after that came the boom of the weapon.

A frenzy of activity overtake the guildhall and the security men ran to their masters side, searching for a threat. Servants screamed and ran this way and that, unable to tell where the threat was coming from. The Guilders dropped down on the floor, whimpering and scared. In the middle of all the chaos stood two figures, unmoving and uncaring.

Finally, when it was clear that no other shots would be arriving the chaos stopped in a hushed silence.

The Inquisitor looked around in contempt and turned towards the door.

“Pier eleven, was it?” He asked as he strode towards the exit, his interrogator in tow.

The door guards hesitated only a second before stepping aside before the menacing figures.

In the roof of nearby building, a pair of shadows rose. One of them hefted the heavy sniper rifle to carry position. They ran to a waiting speeder.

“How it went?” asked the pilot, a grim faced woman with alert eyes.

“Easy.” grunted the sniper as he leaped in the speeder.

“Teached ‘em a lesson” said the spotter as he climbed inside, beside the pilot.

The speeder rose swiftly from the rooftop and hurried in the night.

Then everything was silent again.

SYNDICATE
Not all decision on Ragoos are made by planetary officials (some say that very few actually). Syndicate makes a major player in this planets political field, some doubt that they can even affect the whole sector if they want to. Syndicate has it's hands on everything, trade, politics, PDF, faith, cults and of course on the Ragoos precious nutrition farms. The organization can offer anything man desires, money, power, goods or something you can't find anywhere else. This organization can have anyone they need to do their bidding. Syndicate works on the hives every level, noble houses fight for their cause in political arenas, where syndicates agents whisper their aims from the shadows for their public representatives. Lower levels the hive gangs sold stims, drugs and other illegal items supplied by the syndicate. Also some the hives guilds are on syndicates pay roll, working as their factories to produce goods for the trade. Syndicate is lead by group of powerful men called the inner circle. Inner circle is know only to few individuals. Most of the time numerous agents and henchmen do the organizations work in pupblic.

One of the agents who works for the syndicate is Viktor Styg. He's known as facilitator, a consigliere, a captain and by many other names. Viktors job is to make things happen as the syndicates pleases. Be it to collect dirt on noble mans nightly hobbies or to negotiate a deal with a hive gang to distripute syndicates stims. Viktor has the subtle skills to talk to a noble and the threatning aura to make street mugger respect him.

Now Viktor has spent few weeks in the lower sections gathering clues with his team. He's predictions have come true. There is indeed something down here. The cults have gone mad about it, the big gangs are also after it, he has even seen signs that the ordos might be involved. And someone from the underhive called "Mutant King" was causing much trouble.

Viktor was enjoying his amasce in their safehouse when Vargo Biel, his silent right hand man, came into the room holding hand vox.

"It's him" Vargo told and handed the vox to Viktor.

Viktor listened, man on the other end was Vys Foo, his henchman. Last few days Vys had been observing a group of interesting people who drew far too much attention to themselves in the lower-levels to be here on just ordinary business.

After Vys's debriefing Viktor closed the vox and drank last of his amasce with one big sip.

"They are on the move, get everyone ready" Viktor said to Vargo while starting to dress his ombat gear.

Few minutes later Viktor stepped into their gun-cutter at the safehouses backyard. At the cutter's hatch he exchanged nods with Karl Glean, big man who was mounting his autocannon to the cutters hull. Viktor cheked that everyone was onboard and double checked his custom made bolter and signaled Vargo to lift off.

The gun-cutter arised to the skyes of the low levels and started it's way to the pre-arranged checkpoint.

Okay, so am I right in guessing that Inquisitor Haag's pistol/SMG started off as a lasgun that you carefully shaved away the front, back, top, and bottom before adding plasticard strips to the top and bottom of the barrel? How did you make such neat cuts in the sides to make gas vents?

that's probably more to do with an ADHD or similar attention disorder/hyper activity than amazing though

Guys, the =I=s pistol is a shaved boltpistol, shave kroot muzzle, 1/35 jerry can part and plasticard.

Thanks for all the kind words. Almost painted the whole lot now! Much better than my Eisenhorn Now stuff, I've realy been pushing some aspects of my "miniature art" that would be way too boring to go into with any greater detail, than yay, I try my best and seem to learn new stuff.

This thread is marvellous! I have been considering how to do a mordhiem/inquisitor/necromunda cross over for a few years now, but just didn't get motivated. Now I may just have to give it a try. Can you explain a bit more on the out of game phases? Also, something that I want to get into mine after reading Eisenhorn is allowing gangs to use vehcles. Have you considered this and if so how would you use them? I'm thinking cheap things to by starting at armour 9 all round that can be improved as the camppaign progresses.

your models are awsome! That's a great use for the Vamp. model. When it came out I too just had to give it ago. It's a lovly metal. I also liked the other lord with the crossed swords. Also like your background. It captures the atmoshphere of the Eisenhorn/Ravenor books and yet still fits into the gameing context.

Do you have a terrain set for the campaigns at all? This is something else I'm considering. I'm thiking of a standard set that can be used in 40k games as well, but with the option of adding in buildings with rooms and bits etc. Any suggestions. I'll be following this thread for sure. It's really nice to see someone's though process as well as model developments.

Thanks - sounds like I found just the kind of hobbyist I am hoping to reach

Yes, we are using vehicles! (though they are only featuring starting next round: everything from a Valkyrie, to 8 wheel trucks, flashy speeder and a 4 by 4) As the games are game mastered skirmish games with an RPG factor, game balance can be achieved in so many ways and missions. We are hoping to make a story and have fun.

A set of terrain is a dream, but currently we are using what we have for 40k. But as I have come to realise I love this kind of games by far the most, a proper themed 4 by 4 terrain set is in the horizon.

We have a small forum for the campaign stuff only, but I can share more here in the coming two months! (also of the gaming side and rules addendums). This is an example of the mission briefings players get and to which they give individual email replies:

Jade Vessel - Round TWO - “Pathfinding under duress”

Despite the preparations, the training, the praying, in some cases the sacrifices, it was worse than they could’ve known. With the whole hive seething with unrest, those who can are fleeing and the hive is sucking in the bands of scum and the odd hero on the planet and from beyond. To fill the vacuum. To hunt!

RPG phase (email me your plan!):

Inquisitors: Define your search pattern, delegate tasks to your principal agents and start your search. Make your claims for the Rogue Trader in PDF custody, before Frostschein arrives. Gauer - under special condition, not known to other forces. Harker - identified, presumed under Frostschein command, as he is most senior =I= on Berdia (or the sub sector for the matter)

Hitmen of the Syndicate: Define a course of action to benefit from the unrest!! and to glean as much info as possible. You may interrogate the principal agent in your captivity, or use him for ransom, or both - understand the risks and the rewards.

Rogue Trader: Assemble your men, the prize is there for the taking but not from behind bars. Cunning and ambition is required now and some new allies must be found. Great fortunes can be made of the desperate times and human suffering - should you capitalize?

GAME phase (email me dates that suit you):

Scenario: 9 “Decrees of interrogation”, played simultaneously on two locations (tables)
In the safe house of the Syndicate and under the PDF fort, the two prisoners face the ultimate test. Time is of essence and destiny in the making. As Lord Inquisitor Frostschein, the scourge of Terra heads for the Fort to interrogate the prisoner, the window of opportunity is for gambling, negotiating, cunning or downright gunning to get the Trader out. (Traders primary game)

Simultaneously, Sgt. Jargassor has sent word, he has prevailed against the odds and followed the Syndicate hitmen to the safe house where they are no doubt beginning to disseminate Agent Falk. (Syndicate primary game)

A special interrogation table for the game exists, for certain techniques risk injury, or even death.

Formulate a plan, divide your agents if you must/wish!, start your engines even and execute on the two destinations. Your gang should be ready, or it will be found wanting. You may strike deals, or just send an agent or two to assist an outcome to your liking or advantage at the secondary target. Act fast, utterly powerful individuals are now on you and you will adapt or die. Know also when to run to fight another day. Who Dares wins.

Good Luck!

How did I miss this!?! I'm almost always on the ball with Migs projects :p

Awesome work bud- I love the bionics on your =][=.

When I read the original intro I was expecting 54mm models (I'm guilty of loving those =][= models far too much, I admit, but Nelson's talent and vision was so intense with his work on that project).

I'd love see and hear more about this!

Post by: migsula

Thanks Drake!

I love the 54mm stuff too, but the available conversion fodder for 28mm is so awesome, coupled with some absolutely gorgeous minis at that scale recently, factored with the 10 or so member gangs made it a pretty easy to choise to go with the smaller scale. But everyone in the campaign loves =I= scale models and has done several in the past.

It's a normal coat of milky consistency light green grey in this case, this is followed by tan earth wash, then grey washes, then grey streaks, then rust washes, then... Just mix and match for whatever looks right and works with the minis

I love the GS double-chins on the Gun Servitor. What parts went into construction of the hammer-wielding Acolyte? Is that the head from the new Empire Wizard sprue?

Jade Vessel - an =I=munda Blog @ 2008/08/13 18:08:44

I would guess that the acolyte is an empire flagellant, with kroot shoulderpads. I can't be sure but I'd hazard a guess that the hammer is from valten, but I am clueless about the head.

I really like the fat gun servitor with the ork arms, migsula.

WOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSHHhhhh...

So I have these few models lying around, from past projects that never really got that final idea that really makes them click - this one was for the E&A project, and was going to be something to do with fire, with this really nice =I= henchmen head with welding goggles. He didn't fit in so I had to abandon him. I pick him up every now and then, today after seeing Hammer's new additions and enjoying his efforts with the Empire Wizard kit.

One thing leads to another = a pyromanic mutant witch is born!!! I am REALLY looking forward to painting it and the light effects. DAMN I wish I could take this lot the uk gd...

Let me know how he reads to you and if you like the idea of fire effect! I'm still going to sculpt the shoulder and collar area some.

He looks ace, though I think a bit more fire is neccessary, but it could just be the pyro in me. I really like the use of bitz and I may have to steal this idea at some point.

Maybe it's just the angle of the pic, but somehow, I think his right arm looks wonky compared with the angle of his body. But yeah, I love the welding goggle head. It's one of my favorite pieces in the WH line, second only to the LE Gideon Lorr.

We had a very bloody fight today - they always are that way, but now the RPG leads are thrilling. It's getting nasty and the stakes are higher each round. My little brother has taken the Gauer's gang to his aspiring generalship and done very well in the campaign.

Hammer brought all but few lenses finished gang, which was absolutely gorgeous. He really has a magic touch.

Northen also has an absolutely beautiful set of models, with even more evolved paint jobs, finely capped by his leader whom we saw for the first time today. Both have promised pics to this Blog, and infact Hammer is processing pics of the game as we write Gurk, the 4th player has a Rogue Trader gang which is very very promising, but the paintjobs still short of detailing as he has been the slacker of the bunch.

I was so inspired over all that I had to start painting my new guys, what else could I do? Everyone is also starting their vehicles soon. I've never had so much fun modeling and painting and the games have been a blast too.

Pics soon.

My team consist of Syndicate's agents, sinister organization that tries to influence the sub sector goverments from the shadows (beware lots of pics)

Here's some WIP pics of the models:

Western style witch hunter turned into a the leaders right hand man and a empire wizard converted to a technomancer

A mercenary gunslinger and psyker on the works

Heavy weapon guy and mercenary finished

The leader, finished building

And then some painted ones:

Idea was to make the gang look quite worn looking that they would fit the image of fighting warband in industrial zones.

Vys Foo, technomancer, cowardly tech thief, shoulder mounted lasgun, and portable cogitator. Cloack looks like he's lived in the gutter for a while and all of his equipment is also a bit second hand looking.

Vargo Biel character, leaders right hand man, gunslinger with silenced autopistol and plasmapistol. Aim for this guy was to make him look like he had some serious cojones to pull of the silent but deadly image.

The mercenary, Han Riker. Hired to bring some firepower for the gang. He's meant to look like he's been around for a while and armed to the teeth. All the weapons are painted black to give them a bit SWAT look.

Heavy weapon operator Karl Glean. Custom built autonannon that is attached to his mechanical hand.

Leader Viktor Styg Syndicates facilitator. Dark and moody noble man with some quality looking gear. Custom built bolter is a one in a million weapon in game terms.

Psyker Celena, painting still WIP but toughed to share it too

And finaly a group pic of models so far finished.

That's quite a lot of pics to digest but happy to hear cooments and feedback.

Migs- Love the tubby gunman! Very characterful, as I expect from your work

Northen- Your gang is really cool. Your technomancer is definitely my favourite model- I love how cowardly he looks while still being in an action pose.

Hammer- My favourite model from your gang is definitely the gunnery guy. He screams ex-special forces guy gone bad. And his paint job is really cool too.

Next game we play, we need to bring everyone's A terrain too

Xanthos - We already have too many danes here Seriously though, it's only a short ride and a few ferries, so welcome! I'm very happy to hear about inspiring a nother campaign. Please share your's aswell!

Hammer, you can send the pics to me for processing if you want, I can tweak them with PS just fine. You can also add exposure on your camera. Cloudy days are perfect for taking pics outside, sun doesn't work. We can also see about a unified photoshoot of everyone's gang. Anyway, your pics are very nice these days compared to everything prior to your new camera

I have been painting the fatso and priest an hour today and an hour yesterday. They are at the very uber crap looking stage now - my painting technique for these guys is quite radical and messy, really playing with the white prime showing through, and is only honed more even towards the end. Even the technique is inspired by the GW Art. I will have them finished by the weekend, and the sniper chick is already in the works!

What you guys are doing here is absolutely fantastic. You have all done a fantastic job meshing the modeling/painting, background and gaming aspects of the hobby.

I particularly enjoy the truer to life palette choices. I would assume it's being driven by Migsula, whose style has been shifted in that direction for some time now (since the Tau? Snord's influence?). Those rebel inquisitorial forces could not have been better conceived!

Truly inspirational stuff (It's inspiring me to paint some skaven, oddly enough ).

Now there's a few personalities from the oldskool days! How you doin Jojo? If you're in touch with Snord, say hello!

Actually my style/palette has always been of the natural side. When I posted my first work back in 00(?) they were the sand colored DIY chapter SWs - which Snord liked possibly because of similar taste in hues. I've since tried all sorts of things, but when I do these labors of love, everything comes "naturally".

Meeting Hammer all those years ago through dakka really kick started my development and we have been driving each others work ever since, so everyone is sort of driving everyone really. Northen has been sort of following in our steps in the tournament scene since 02 or so, though I don't know if he will admit our work has affected his or not. The ultimate compliment was that Hammer ditched his initial plans after seeing the start of my gang, because he felt he needed to up his game - well he did, didn't he.

Ok some piccies after a very nice hobby sunday:

Wip sniper Alysia Von Rostomeyer (notice her psyber rat and scarred face) and "a hermit ex guard tracker" loosely based on the brilliant 56mm scale "Dante" conversion in the =I= book. He is the first addition to the gang from Berdia and isn't very phtogenic, but has great potential IMO... Can't wait to finish building and to get to paint him, and her. The base at the front will be for the bounty hunter. I am giving 40mm bases for all dramatis personae/NPCs with 2 or more wounds. The bounty hunter concept now has a slightly pointy hood, and a metal mask ala. Destro, with a hint of V for Vendetta thrown in, in a very Warhammer Gothic way.. I think he should be very characterful, a real dramatis personae. The rest of him is "all Harlon Nayl" or my "CEU operative" with OT spec ops kit. He'll get a very dark grey body suit, all grey kit and weapon, and a gloss silver metal mask, with black slits for eyes and mouth.

And the first of the new terrain PIP. Nothing spectacular just a fuel and ammo dumps, but I am excited to "accessorize" my FW terrain for =I=munda and to add brand new buildings and walkways later, with a rugged underhive theme. I've used decals to jazz these up after the shoot and will do the full rust/soot treatment as for TWAR.

I´m still just in awe of the level of detail in your conversions Migs... Really liking the two new guys, and looking forward to seeing the bounty hunter.

In other news, my group has now decided on a Necromunda campaign this winter, hopefully I´ll be blogging that once it gets closer.

Really like the idea of bigger bases for the 2W guys.

Also, would it be possible to get a closer look at the sniper? I can´t really make out her head from that pic.

+++Twist Country+++

As the day before, and those before it, a deep, mustard hued mist hung around the endless rusty hacks of the east end. A huge bulky twist galloped towards the epicenter of this excuse of a Hive Sector. After him came two others, inhumanely thin, twisted even for twists sort of twists. And a Twist with a long pointy hat and no left arm. Then a group of four, or rather three carrying something that looked like a fourth.

Fething feth - where are they all going? He knew of course, but why? Gevlan cursed his deformed back that ached after the long stalk, and then slipped into the night, moving with stealth and swiftness totally unexpected of his appearance.

The old Theatrum was a huge, rotting carcass of armaplas and steel gridwork, punctured by a massive support structure of the hive above. There was something organic about the place, something that reminded Gevlan of Magidor Gamma, and the Endoskel Forests. What a campaign that had been.

He could see the dribble of twists feed the mammoth building through the gateways that appeared well guarded. He didn’t need them of course, he knew all the ways in and out, like he did everywhere within day march of the old barracks that he still considered his home, post... home.

Inside the sense of scale was disorienting. Particularly when surveyed from the western audit balcorium, full 70 yards higher than the floor beneath. The place was packed with twist. Gevlan made a passing snorting sound, that made for laughter, a place packed full of twists always made for twisted viewing. He started walking down the memory lane again, the Hubberian Twist wars ... a quick hush in the crowd brought him back to present with a pause a lone, skeletal figure appeared on stage, moving with other worldly grace. He was glad in gleaming black metallic armor and a long dark grey cape of nothingness hung from his gaunt shoulder guards to form a stark contrast to his pallid white, skull of a face. Teal pipes and tubes fluttered where his chin and ears should have been. Gevlan decided the skull face was the most twisted of the twists, even if he wasn’t really a twist.

A tiny twist with a head three times too big appeared behind the shadowy cape, seemingly adamant to gain certain distance from mr. Master Twist . Then Skullface spoke. Or Gevlan heard him speak, for there was no way to tell if his mouth was moving. Or if he had a mouth. It occurred to him he shouldn’t hear him anyway from the distance.

He was a master orator, as the total silence of the twist audience underlined. Gevlan could feel his heart beating as the message started to sink in. His beardy mouth started to form a smile, but that smile died on his lips and his heart missed a beat. A cold metal ring was pressed dead centre against his spine - dozens of simultanious thoughts jarred his brain - a Thor, or Mars Pattern assault shotgun, or possibly a compact boltgun; how did someone, something ambush the scout chief like this, who had a piece like that in the twist lands... After what felt like all of his utterly dull last week, with his nightmares imposed on, he could feel the pressure lighten, then detach. Gevlan turned slowly, keeping his lascarbin pointed on the floor. The twist looked bad. Tall with sinewy muscularity, grey skin with pointy metal dispensers poking out and a crudely painted white face - Gevlan couldn’t tell in the loom, but it looked like the feth had stiched his mouth shut with something thick and caked in crimson. And the Thrice Damned Feth wore yellow rain boots. This was death incarnate. In yellow boots.

A Second figure peeked from the door of the shadowy balcorium, she was a goddes - and announced matter of factly that the boss wants a word. Gevlanhad a pretty good idea who that Boss might be. He slowly made for the door, somewhat comforted by the presence of the young lady and the fact they let him keep all of his weapons. Passing the door he dared a quick glance at the lady again, but to his horror this side of her face was a lump of burned scar tissue, and a sickly yellow lidless eye that emitted light and made the scar tissue glow horridly in a mustard hue.

+++ the end +++

So the new guys! PIP in pics, but now done and varnished. These two were real joy to paint, I have had an annoying flu this past week, so can't play ball and painted and converted instead.

Anyway, here - Gevlan Munt, the Chief Scout and Alysia.

They join these 4, for a total gang of 8! (to make their battle debut next weekend, together with the equipment crates and hopefully Rufus Slayde, the BH and some brand new terrain built on Necro terrain kit armatures, with CoD part and "Chemical Plant" bitz!!! So lots of eye candy... )

Next Weekend everyone needs to have their gangs finished (well the core gang of 7 or 8 anyway, as we keep adding lots of cool stuff).

Thanks for all the nice comments people. Back in the days I was impressed by Hammer's and Mig's nice earthy pallets which was pretty much my "thing" too but those fellows gave me inspiration to improve and continue with that style.

And here are some more sinister henchmen finished for my gang

Rougue trader ship's officer Celso Saar

Syndicate speeder pilot Javi armed with lascarbine

Street thug Jamal armed with assault shotgun (shotgun with man stopper rounds in gaming terms).

Psyker Celena finished

Started building a syndicate sniper fellow based on Yriel, WIP pics soon to come.

C&Cs are welcome.

Damn! It´s rare to see a gaming group with such consistently high standards of painting/modeling.

Thank you for sharing those models Northen, really like the psyker chick.

On a different, more gaming oriented note; How do you guys run the psyker chars? I mean rules wise, do you use ther powers from Underhive, or what system?

Edit: Spelhink mistkaes.....

Post by: migsula

We use the modified Necro psyker rules and then totally new powers/pricing adjusted from the Dark Heresy RPG The psykers can actively train and seek knowledge and there are a lot of RPG options in this an area for suggesting custom equipment/rules from players. I then define the rule together with the player and dictate a suitable pts cost.

Some player have rather ambitious plans - and the risks grow with the stakes

Ahaaa, now there´s an interesting though, adapt powers from Dark Heresy. So simple, and yet I didn´t even consider it.... :S

I´ve found the first two members of my gang btw, a mechanic and a gunslinger, but I wont start a thread for it yet.
I´m gonna wait until more people in the group have stuff to show off.

Until then, I´ll just enjoy seeing the stuff you guys are pulling from your sleeves. So far this is one of the most inspiring threads I´ve seen on Dakka (for me).

Ahhh, yes... more models for one of my favourite threads in the miniature world... inventive models, brilliantly cool concepts and all of them really working to both honour -and- most importantly -add- to the depth of all the things I love and adore in the world of WH40k... this is the sort of stuff that inspired me to this hobby of ours to begin with. The madness and the darkness of the 41 millenium really does come to life in these models so kudos to all of you!

On personal praise I would go ahead and claim that each participant that has shown stuff thus far has been brilliant in both execution and ideas...

Migsula's inquisitor is just plain lovely... and the mutant guardsman is just... too cool...

Norther's technomancer is just pure happy as well...

And Col. Hammers models, despite the darker piccies, I have to say that his inquisitor takes the cake as well of his models since I've had the privilege to actually eye them up close and personal... And also the new bountyhunter is bloody brilliant!

So yeah, keep the thread going, guys...

I personally am looking for more...

We had another round today! So much coolness on table again. Need to take some pics. Hammer and I had finished the Bounty Hunters and everyone else had moved forward too. I have decided to keep a lose points awarding system for Jade Vessel to give a clear picture how the campaign is proceeding. 3 pts is awarded for each succesfully executed mission, and there’s a one point roleplaying award for each round. Additional one point awards can be given for modeling, or scenario etc. reasons.

We are currently 3games into campaign, which is 8 rounds. The main target will alone be 15 bonus pts and latter rounds have other bonuses too, so the field is wide open really!

Current situation after round 3 stands:

Viktor Styg / Jussi: 12 pts (9+2+1 great stories bonus)

Gauer / Pete (my lil bro, who's proving out to be a cunning little inquisitorial fox): 12 pts (7+5)

Harker / Marko 8 pts (5+2+1 great stories bonus)

Krikham / Gurk 6 pts (3+3)

(After round two it was:

Viktor Styg / Jussi: 9 pts (3+1,3+1, +1 (for making all modeling deadlines, with gorgeous) stuff too...)

Gauer / Pete: 7 pts (3, 3+1)

Harker / Marko 5 pts (1,3+1)

Krikham / Gurk 3 pts (0, 3) )

Next round the terrain kit should be finished, so a full battle report is in order. My Muties were supposed to make a debut, but it got so messy with the Cult of the Snarling and 4 gangs on the table I decided not to. We will have some one to one games soon though, so they will see action ASAP

Post by: migsula

This is the current rules document - Games Mastering and an RPG attitude is a HUGE part of the fun for us. I think I should ask the boys to start sharing the stories here too, instead of just the campaign forum we have.

“Keep your friends close and enemies closer” – ancient human adage

=I=munda

This coming July I will be Game Mastering an Inquisitor themed, narrative driven continuum of games based on tweaked and expanded Necromunda rules set. Initiative, cunning and situation savvy will be rewarded.

The gang can consists of maximum 6 personae.

The emperor protects.

Rules Addendum

Iron Will , =I= and agents if =I= alive and conscious (auto pass/fail bottle test, =I= auto pass LD tests) Those worshipping the eight stars, mork and gork, money or something else get a slightly modified set.

Arsenal, any equipment listed in the Necromunda rules book, or any of the supplements, can be bought for the cost listed (dice rolled together with GM), more advanced gear available later subject to negotiations, price and happenings in the campaign.

Team:"Leader" with udated stats and character specific special rules,  up to two heavies, mimimum of two gangers or heavies and no other constraints, so Juves, or non combatants, newcharacter types you might suggest. (starting size max 10 models)

Several new character types fully explained when created/met in the campaign.

Psyker 20pts, access to physic powers at a cost.

Destiny Points

Each gang commander starts with one destiny point – representing his or her faith in the Emperor, Lucky Charm, or blessing of the 8pointed star. This is a narrative get out of jail card and more can be accumulated by heroic deeds. Should the character be down to 0 faith, grave carefulness is required.

PSYKERS

Some rare individuals have powers beyond the physical realm, yet rarer are those with the inner strength to use them and not succumb to the horror that is warp. It requires intense concentration and inner calm for a psyker to use one of his powers, not always easy in the middle of an inquisitorial firefight! In order to use one of his powers the psyker must first roll equal to or under his Leadership on 2D6. If this test is failed the psykers concentration has been broken and he may not use a power that turn. If the test is passed the power may be used!

PERILS OF THE WARP
Some Extremely dangerous individuals have the power to harness the psychic energies of the warp. This is a risky and very dangerous thing to do, for the warp is inhabited by those strange and unearthly creatures that are known to humanity as daemons.
In order to represent the chance of a daemonic attack, if a Psyker rolls a 2 when he takes the Leadership test in order to use his powers then he must roll a D6 on the Perils of the Warp Table below. Note that on a roll of 2 the psyker is allowed to use the power he was testing for before rolling on the Perils of the Warp Table.

PERILS OF THE WARP TABLE
D6 Result
Drawn into the Warp. Unless the psyker can roll equal to or under his Initiative he suffers severe trauma! The model goes out of action and is no longer able to use the power that he was using when he suffered the trauma.
Attacked. The psyker suffers 1 Strength 5 hit, with no armour save allowed.
6 Drawn into the Warp. The psyker “suffers” a relevation! His psychic abilities grow stronger and he may learn new skills, but this may become with a long time cost…

EQUIPMENT/ ARSENAL:

Generally speaking it is a good idea to consult the =I= rulebook, DH and WH codexes and BL material and consult the GM for a price and rules!

power armour 3+ armour save, doesn’t halve initiative, +1 S, cannot be hidden under clothes, 200pts

psyber skull/eagle/cherub, juve stats, no experience gain, armed with a laspistol, with an ammo roll of 6, gives +1 I to a predetermined model in your gang, if within 2”. 30pts

purity seals, model gets LD+1 30pts

force sword (power sword that auto “out of actions” a wound on a successful psychic test) 80pts

psycannon (boltpistol that wounds on 2+ all demons and psykers) 30pts

inferno cannon, like meltagun pistol w. 6” range 30pts

Jokaero Digital Weapons, as weapon, but one use per game and double the point cost.
Long Las Sniper, as lasgun, but long range 12-36 and +1 to hit, ammo roll 3+ and S4. Can fire hotshot pack at S5 and -2 sv, but this takes a turn to recharge. SPECIAL weapon 60pts

Las Carbine, as lasgun but short range +2 to hit and long range 12-24 and -1 to hit. 25pts

Fire Support rig, gives wearer “bulging biceps” skill. 50pts

Recources table (in addition to territories table)

Space transport: 1-2 rough runner, 3 paid rogue trader, 4 ally rogue trader, 5 own vessel, 6 friendly rogue trader (own vessel, with experienced captain and a network of associates.

Planet transport: 1-2 none, 3 4x4, 4 8wheel cargo, 5 valkyrie equivalent speeder, 6 gun cutter (requires 4,5,6 of space transport to be fully functional)

Land assets: 1-3 just the territories, 4 safe house, 5 secured safe house, 6 mansion with automated gun sentries, bio scanners, staff…

Mentor 1 – 3 no-one special, 4 senior =I=, 5 senior =I= with similar outlook to life, 6 Inquisitor Lord

WISHLIST – need a torture rack? Prefer upper hive accommodation? make your claim.

Starting experience

the leader gets enough experience for three freely chosen skills or stat upgrades from any table.

in addition one of the agents gets enough experience for two (or two agents for one) freely chosen skills or stat upgrades from tables he or she is entitled to.

WISHLIST – you should’ve learnt by now

I've been too busy with real work (and basking in the feel good factor of getting the core gang finished) to do much modeling related this week. But I hear Hammer's got a real nice chassis already built (or rather part of a Hammer's Slammers in 40k project he abandoned.) I've been eyeing the ork truk kit with suspicion, it's too perfect with minimal changes, and I don't really do "minimal changes" so a plan is formulating

I have to admit, all the work in this thread is absolutely stunning.

A friend (and co-worker) and I have been following the thread all along, and are both inspired by the work, but one thing has led back to the same discussion repeatedly.

Migsula, the VC/Inquisitor conversion is mint, spot on about the dynamics of the figure, however, what keeps coming back to forefront is "Where/what is the bionic right arm from?"

It looks very familiar, but neither of us can place it, any help with the source would be most appreciated.

Cheers.

My guess is its a Necron Destroyer left arm with a SM scout hand, on the first page the WIP shot it looks like a GW plastic piece, Migs would know for sure (then again maybe not given what his bits box must be like!). As for the project, the models are amazing, real inspiration to convert and create, to take a set of minis and really make them unique which I'm rediscovering with my Orks is really one of the joys of this hobby.

Jade Vessel - an =I=munda Blog @ 2008/09/28 07:40:51

Post by: Lord Maleval

That was my first thought as well, but it seems to have a much more 'tech' look of bionics, and IMO, Necrons tend to have a smoother 'carapace' look to their armour. I agree it looks plastic, but it could quite possibly be made from something besides an arm from another model. At least, that's my current guess, but I've also been known to be wrong, and I'll be the first to admit it. I am also the kind of person who thinks a Sentinel's leg (modified) makes not a bad cybernetic arm on an Ogryn.

Jade Vessel - an =I=munda Blog @ 2008/09/28 18:41:48

Post by: migsula

The bionic arm is a complete scratch built. Plasticard, GS, tau burst gun barrels or something like that as an armature, and lots of Battle fleet Gothic parts! The latter are used quite a bit around the gang.

yes, but it was of the 40k kind. Two good games. One with TWAR, one against TWAR, which is always a highly educational affair - playing against your own army that is.

Thanks Migs, you have given me the Necro bug, and the last thing I need is a new project. My current mad idea is a multi player campagin using map tiles made from Mighty Empire plastic tiles. So not just a Necromunda project, but a wild crazy one too!

Now I just need more time to model and paint. And players

Go for it man, the more Necro players we can get up and going, the better!

I´ve managed to get most of my gaming group doing a campaign as well, we´ll have at least 5 players, and probably 7-8.

A lot of thanks go to Migsy and his friends.

This sort of actually started from a discussion with Hammer about how the termie legs into biggerised marines doesn't really work...I just had to prove myself wrong there's no way to get it right without lengthening the legs below the knee, the proportions are wrong otherwise!

I want to make an Alpha Legionnaire for the squad - there's a story reason and it relates strognly to the campaign. Those of you who read YMDC may also have noticed I harbour dark dreams of turning this project into an army LATD style. With our group, most likely just a collection of imperial/chaos units that best fit the feel and image.

Here's progress, with something for scale (He's not that much bigger than CG, just bulkier and more "god perspective" all round)... Head is not glued and not tilted forwards enough at all... very frustrating for some time as I have an image in my head and it's beautiful, and you guys only see very WIP crap for now I've always wanted to paint the blue scheme with totally blending to black shading and GREEN highlights! ...so he's not Alpha Legion only because of fluff.

Now, those of you who have read Legion, would you please describe how you vision the CC weapon the Legion is using. Any pic reference? I want to make sure my take will fit the general idea people have - the execution will be all migs of course. I've also built a custom bolter for him, mk old skool!

Thanks in advance and as always, comments welcome.

Nice looking biggerized marine! Posing him next to a bretonnian figure makes him seem even larger, which is a good thing. The "old school" bolter also looks pretty good, and I look forward to seeing it in action.

Well, in Legion, if i recall correctly, they used the weapons of the locals quite a bit.

Id go for something like Ninja weaponry, seeing how the AL are suppose to be fairly stealthy and such. So the regular assasin weaponry would probably fit the fluff. Obviously, Marinz (hurr) will need something a bit extraordinary.

Maybe this is an inspiration.

Woohoo, AL marine goodness. Not having read the book suddenly seems like a bad idea...

As always, gorgeous GS work. Are you going to extend his carapace lover, or do something else between carapace and groin? It looks a bit "I can see the top of the terminator legs bit" ish right now..

Kudos on the old school bolter, will be interesting to see whether you can make it look good and believable.

okay, i went back into the book.
the weapon of the enemy infantry is called falxe. its two anda half meters long and essentially a hybrid spear, a scythe straightened out. half its length is straight handgrip, the other half a long blade with a slight bias hook, the inside curve of which is razor sharp.

hope that helps

Thank you sir! Very helpful as my Legion is packed away.

I will have to modify, or possibly remove the cabling though, but will definitely build a powered falxe and should have suitable bitz.

This has been very useful. So I am giving a power "falxe" closecombat weapon for the legionnaire, which unfortunately makes the cabling of the nice TH arm redundant - SO instead I will build a small flamer into where the cables integrate to the gauntlet, which will count as combiflamer in 40k and an additional handflamer in =I=munda. It's nice and sneaky I think, totally in line with the legion.

Does any one remember which WD had the Alpha Legion Index Astartes??? I need to dig it up. Or is it online somewhere?

"The Alpha Legion was asked to take on their greatest challenge; to use all their skills of subterfuge, misinformation and sabotage to destroy Chaos from within. Secretly still loyal, they were challenged to defect to the side of Horus and ensure the final destruction of Chaos. Alpharius Omegon appeared to accede to this request, but like nearly all actions of the Alpha Legion, their true motivations are eminently unknowable."

from an Apha Legion Lexicanum entry. It just sums up brilliantly why I am all enamored with this legion. Add to that that they were the youngest, with always the most to prove

I also have plans for Sgt. Jargassor, the heroic guard leader who's been head shotting his way in the ODF NPCs, so he needs a proper new model now he is, "associated". This kind of stories into characters approach is so great with this Jade Vessel setting.

Here's Brother Alpharius and progress. Still very WIP, but getting there. I still have no normal marines for scale, but the Titan crew boss is the height of a cadian/standard marine and has human proportions, where as the Chaos Spawn (also for the campaign) is a big hulking mass of warp mutated matter, and I think the marine is just about right scale wise compared to both. Note that the marine is charging forward, which doesn't really show from this angle, so far from standing upright. He Dwarfs standard marines, in a "GW art way" and is much more "god perspective" than my CG.

So I want a full army of these guys, which will never happen, but a few more for sure.

I absolutely have to keep going with Jade Vessel, never enjoyed a modeling project so thoroughly and felt so free to be creative within the 40k Gothic fabric. Maybe turn this project into a small army, with which rules, I am not sure. More likely I should develop rules for proper skirmish scale combat. I want to do Sgt. Jargassor next. A proper human conversion, in scale that will frame all of my gang into a normal, able bodied human. Jargassor of course answers to Alpharius.

Pyroguy is in the painting cue, not forgotten, maybe slightly intimidating though as I want to really make it click in a fresh way. Flame light effect has been done to death as an technical exercise.

Platuan4th - good suggestion. I guess I need to get IA 5 then! Is that siege of vraks? Is there are alot about the Legion? How about in part 2?

Eagle will stay, I think. Still brainstorming, researching and discussing the motives and disguises of the legion

There´s a bit about the Legion in IA5 (Siege of Vraks 1), but not that much.

There´s a fluff bit, about them sneaking through the lines wearing imperial marine gear, and how they helped the main traitor guy get in contact with bigger allies (read: in bigger trouble).

Also, there´s an army list with Traitor IG supported by Alpha Legion marines.

IA6 has nothing of much interest on Alphas, but has Khorne and Nurgle marines.

Hey Mig,

I've followed your work on and off these forums for a while, and I just wanted to say that your Jade Vessel work has really inspired me to rethink the way I approach my modeling.

I've recently started up a Dark Heresy campaign for some friends, and to be honest I was having trouble realising my characters through the miniatures. I felt that I was really limited by the standard GW range, and just couldn't get the Blanche-esque philosophy I was attempting to channel, without sinking more time than I had on me into the whole project.

Your ability to completely re imagine the plastics to so accurately echo the energy and narrative of Games Workshop's artwork has completely reinvigorated me, and now I'm seeing opportunities across multiple kits that I wouldn't have considered earlier. I just wanted to let you know how awesome your work has been, and how inspirational your view of the Warhammer universe appears to be.

I'm currently working on a new group of NPCs for my campaign, and I'm already seeing how versatile the various kits can be if you just think them through a little.

Keep up the amazing work man, and I can't wait to see how Brother Alpharius turns out.

Malika, CMDante, Mister Feral - Guys, firstly, HUGE thanks for joining Dakka because of the blog. Warseer is so awesome both in quality and quantity when it comes to modeling and I've always had such a warm welcome there, I hope you experience the same here. I've wanted to keep this blog Dakka exlusive, in part to raise dakka profile, in part because I love this board so much.

Uncanny Dodge - Thanks for taking the time to reply in such detail. It is hobbyists like you getting inspired that is the best possible award for me and the best thanks possible for sharing the work. I'm gona take this project to GD next year in a variety of format, but that's really a side dish, enjoying the modeling, sharing the passion and getting others excited and doing the same is the best possible award. Period. So thanks again.

AND about "SHADDES OFFE GREYE" - yes of course it is intentional. Has no-one read the notes on J. Blanche's concept art? He twists these words into "olde gothic" in a very intuitive and IMO flavorful way. It's a small tribute to the master. I still hope to find a way to show this whole project to folks at GW.

Tomorrow is "Sunday painting" with Hammer - depending on the priming weather, either the Legionnaire or the already primed Pyro meets series 7

I spotted the J. Blanche influence right off, so I saw no reason to question it. Absolutely stunning work, BTW.

Well, this is just frigging brilliant stuff. Really, incredible.

My friend Joe and I have been talking about kicking up necromunda again, and I think this could be the type of inspiration we need. I've been building my Inquisition army in much the same fashion--building/buying/converting models I like, and making them fit somehow. But you really inspire me to take it even further, and I really appreciate that.

A quick run down of what I have done on my =][= munda game:

The rules of the game itself do not change. The changes are in the gang/warband creation. I have defined three types of leaders (inquisitor, rogue trader, and tech magos), and the leader you choose influences what you can hire and purchase. Each leader also has a special rule specific to the type of leader he/she is. Inquisitors have "Word of the Emperor". Rogue Traders have "Rogue Trader Charter". Tech Magi currently have "Mechadendrites", but I'm not really happy with this so far. Everything we've tried for this either over or underpowered compared to the other two.

The leader has "Resource Credits" to hire and equip his agents. 1500 resource credits to start.

Instead of Gangers, Heavies and Juves, I have Agents, Specialists, and Sages.

Hmm, so it's sort of a simple change of names for the gangs and such?

Personally I would love to see more RPG elements in there such as a GM and NPC's. Perhaps also more "accuracy" in the types of equipment, meaning that a Cadian Pattern Lasgun would work a bit different than lets say a Mars Pattern one due to the use of ammo or whatever. Or perhaps this would be more suited for a game like Dark Heresy, however there could always be elements of that included into it all.

It would also be cool to see some sort of semi-official (at least accepted by the general fan community) version of this game so that you could all play/discuss/etc it and still be talking about the same game instead of each fan having his or her own interpretation of the game.

Hmm, a simple yet interesting twist in changing the "gangs" into an Inquisitor and his retinue.

Hey all, I've started up a Google group called Inquisimunda. I'm planning on uploading my work on the rules to it at some point in the near future. It is restricted access and you have to be invited. If you want to join it, send me a private message here at Dakka with your email address and I will send you an invite. I'm hoping we can all pitch in and develop a central ruleset for this wonderful idea.

This is what has served us well - I can't share all the current character types as other players don't know them all yet, or if haven't met them in combat don't know the stats. The key is a GM with imagination and a good group of gamers intent on having fun, the way they like it best. The beauty is to twist universal to your kind of unique.

“Keep your friends close and enemies closer” – ancient human adage

=I=MUNDA

This coming July I will be Game Mastering an Inquisitor themed, narrative driven continuum of games based on tweaked and expanded Necromunda rules set we call =I=munda. Initiative, cunning and situation savvy will be rewarded.

The gang can consists of maximum 6 personae.

Long Las Sniper, as lasgun, but long range 12-36 and _ to hit, ammo roll 3+ and S4.

So wait, Inquisitors have the stats of normal gang leaders etc?

How would this go for Space Marines then? Would they have their normal 40k stats or something completely different?

I'd love to work on some =][= supplement which isn't based on Inquisitorial stuff but more on local crimelords, PDF, smugglers, etc. Xenos would also be cool to include there in the longer run I guess.

What kind of Dark Heresy elements do you want to include in here?

Yes, but with 3 wounds and those free stat/skill upgrades in the beginning. In our Campaign we have 2 Inquisitor players, 1 Crime Lord and 1 Rogue trader! So a good mix, add in all NPC things, it's a fething circus of Warhammer gothic!

Space Marines will be terribly powerful, which is reflected in their "cost", but then a meltagun is very powerful too, or some of the other character concepts to be introduced.

Yeah, Holland is sort of far away... But it shouldn´t be too hard to get a group up where you´re at. This thing seems to be catchng on anyways...

It looks like my group´s campaign will be evenly spread also. Two or three Inq´s, a rogue trader and one confirmed Cultist gang.

By the way Migs, did you check your PM´s?

I view the Inquisitors/Leaders as Inquisition field agents such as Eisenhorn, Ravenor, and the like. They aren't Inquisitor Lords or space marines, and wouldn't have superhero stats. In the first Eisenhorn book, he describes having to search for his eyeglasses to read something. My thought on the subject is that if you want to play with Inquisitor Lords, you need to be playing 40K, not Necromunda.

The biggest difference between the 2nd ed stat line and 3rd and beyond is the loss of the Movement stat. Add the movement stat in, and you can use just about any unit from 3rd edition and beyond in the necro universe.

I actually changed "hired guns" to "Special Request Operatives". This is where the Officio Assassinorum operatives come from, as well as space marines and sisters of battle. Their cost has to be paid at the start of each battle and must be justified. Things like this is where a GM is really necessary.

As far as the DH stuff, I'm still skimming and deciding what is useful in the TTG and what should stay in the RPG.

[Edited to address the stat question]

Ok, sorry it took so long with the PMs, didn't realise I had some waiting.

As for the rules etc. discussion, I'd like to emphasize it's about the group having fun and building a set that matches. No two groups will be the same, and no universal rules set will be perfect Just take the bitz you like and shake!

I can see where your coming from on this mate. The only thing is I don't think many groups will be lucky enough to have as creative and dedicated a GM as yourself at the helm.

Standardised rules would at least provide a good jumping off point for those with the imagination to develop stories through RPG elements.

Looking forward to seeing more of your thoughts on rules and even more so, your mini's!

Done.

and a rare glimpse to my rather radical painting process

This is the first figure of my next gang (or they are NPCs really) But this gang only has 3 models, as Alpharius is going to be so expensive and formidable. The Shades of Greye gang is pretty much done, this second installment is inspired by Legion the book, moonlight! and autumn. The model has inspired me to write a new story too. Got a lot of comments from my modeling/painting guru friends on this one. Really happy they liked him so much. Honestly I am a little surprised too as I really painted with no "filters". As has been the trend, I just went with the raw vision and flow.

Very cool! No scales though?

A very interesting method you've used to paint him too, would never have guessed you started with a yellow base!

At first I thought the head looked too small but on reflection, its perfectly sized to represent a marine in such thick, heavy armour. The old school bolter is a nice touch. Love the weathering effects too.

MORE!

Damn, you made my first Alpha Legionnaire I finished painting today look pale in comparison, however I love all the freehand and the grime. I might just have to borrow that XX idea on the shoulder pad.

Still, I find it intriguing how you painted him, I've never seen yellow be used before on them.

I'm also rather excited about your next gang, I was considering doing something similar too actually. What are your plans on that one?

@Platuan4th: If it were Old English it'd be something like "sċead of grǽg" .

That looks amazing. I love the blending, but think the weapon is maybe a bit too small. I might have to try my hand at a gang, though I'm sure it won't compare to the amazingness of this thread.

Just noticed the Chaos Spawn hand reaching for him in the last pic.

Aww great... And just as my jaw recovers from your previous models, you go and make it drop again.....

He looks brutal! I was actually looking at the very bit that you used for the close combat weapon earlier and thought "hmm, wouldn´t that look cool on some model"..

And lo, it doth!

Painting looks very good too, I was thinking that the face could use a little more color, but with him being thousands of years old, his skin could very well have gotten a bit grey...

lol this is simply ridiculous.
I was really expecting something extraordinary, but that guy simply blows everything away i have seen so far.

The blue works well with the green tones, the freehand is simply awesome, the chest adornment, the heraldry, ....

The face as well as the wear and tear on the armour really finish it off nicely. He truly looks like a veteran, chaosified, but without the regular spikyness and such. It works so well, Im simply astounded. Last but not least, the weaponry really ties the heresy feel together. The falxe works very well and looks like a fitting and elegant weapon for a marine. The old school bolter is the same.

Very elegant, but at the same time savage and brutal.
Awesome, you have outdone yourself.

Now...I see your steps for painting Alpharius. Let me try to clear this up...brush or airbrush? And, I'm fully assuming those lines in the final stage are free-hand.

Amazing models from all...Northen, Hammer, Migs...stunning work. Conversions, paint, bases...all of it. Can't wait to see more.

Yes, you're right. I did, of course, mean to refer to something more akin to Early Modern English, but my brain switched off and type a capital "O"(and the word old to begin with). I swear it has to do with working in a book store and having to listen to high "skool" students who have no idea of language history(the same kind who require the "translated" versions of Shakespeare).

Brilliant, of course...

This is amazing man, you've taken such a minimalist approach to this model and yet there's so much history and personality there. You instantly get the impression that there's 10,000 years of story here, but not so over-wrought in the traditional chaotic appearance, that you bend to old stereotypes about his motives.
This marine feels incredibly unique, and as usual you've embedded so much narrative in the modeling.

Excellent work Mig, can't wait for more.

very nice! The biggerized marine looks 100% better than the normal dwarf with broken hips we normally associate with marines. The blue color you worked your way up to is fantastic, and the layering up from yellow makes for some really natural highlighting.

I am not sure what is going on with his left knee pad though. Looks a bit strange to me.

Also, what is the figure with the genestealer claw in the last picture?

Amazing looking model!
What's the purpose/effect of the yellow undercoat, followed by the blue over-undercoat, on parts like the armor trim (which then get a metallic treatment)? Do the undercoats show much on the final version? I'm intrigued.

You can paint them eyes, it's just somewhat harder. I painted pallid orbs for this guy, shaded in the pics though. I actually really love the sinister look of either black or white orbs. The =I= had black orbs.

The Crypt Ghoul heads are perfect though, those tiny little eyes that are so nice to pick out.

Tinfoil - The trim in silver was something I tried to see if I could do without, but didn't want to in the end. Elsewhere the yellow (actually lime/lemon), though broken into green, shows quite a bit on the edges.

Bleeping bleep, that is one heck of a cool model Northen!

This whole "takin´ your time and gettin´ it right" thing is really growing on me.

That´s the beauty of a project like this.

Since you know you won´t need 100 models, you can really spend time on making each one perfect.

Interesting choice of model also. Prince Yriel? Beautiful conversion anyways, love the frreehand on the cloak.

Nice and subdued colors also.

Yeah, it has prince Yriel for base, swapped the arms, some re-work on the hair and scratch builded the sniper rifle.

Mig that space Marine is all kinds of awesome.

Totall captures how I envision the Alpha Legion after reading 'Legion'.

Your thread and the maniacal work of the other scandinavians has pushed me to do up an =][= gang for our local necromunda league, primarily due to a lack of readily available necromunda models at a reasonable price.

I forsee many people doing the same around the world.

Migsula, I've sat here looking through this log for the past couple months but the sheer crazy-good quality of all of the work here finally made me decide to join dakkadakka, so I thank you for that. In the meantime though, it seems like a number of people have been equally inspired by this log and have made their own versions, and I feel inclined to do the same if I can get together enough forces and convince my roommates to join in. I'm also happy Northern has continued to add to his gang, because I really like the idea of a group of people making all of these gangs together and coordinating an enthralling story to go with the figures.

That being said, I am inclined to agree that coming up with a coherent system(s) for playing =I= munda would be very beneficial to those of us lacking a group of very engaged players. I found this in the Skirmish Scale Games section:

http://www.worldinarms.info/

It's basically Mordheim with 40k gangs and it seems to be pretty effective. Nonetheless, I think it'd be a great idea to come up with a couple of rule sets to help everyone out.

This blog is my favorite 40k concept I've ever come across! The gritty, dark and twisted nature of all the models screams John Blanche and I really think that's what 40k is all about.

Hobby projects for this week: A short story of the Legionnaire + I'm painting the Chaos Spawn seen in some of the WIP shots at the moment. The plan is to make a "master class" (or a major screwup) of how to use the new citadel washes, their inks and TAMYA clear paints for a fast and impressively disgusting scheme. There's only one thin layer of paint, rest is all inks/washes.

Pics as soon as I am done, which will be next week because a business trip and those damn slow drying washes.

Then it's Sgt. Jargassor. A character born in the campaign, formerly a pdf guy, who now needs a proper model.

.........Sorry......still speechless.....

Um...WOW!!!!!

This whole thread has inspired a bunch of us to get back to the game, which we had wandered away from temporarily.

Alpharius is absolutely stunning, I had previously started work on a centerpiece model ( a White Scar Commander ), with a Terminator used for the sizing. I stalled, but seeing your work has provided me with the answer to my problem, so "Thank You"

I also went with an older style bolter, when people point out it looks smallish compared to the Marine, I point out that scale wise, a Marine is about 7'6" - 8' tall, and a bolter is only .75 calibre, pretty close to a 12 gauge shotgun.

All in all, great work, keep it up, I love having a pinnacle to strive for.

Cheers.

That is without doubt the coolest truescale marine conversion I have seen. The final paint job is insanely good as well and I like that he isn't super spikey/death metal chaos but still looks like he could chew nails. Had to join Dakka just to tell you how blown away I am by all the cool conversions on this thread, but especially that one.

I'm trying to work out how you did the torso. Is that the terminator torso with the collar from a power armor sgt? Also what thickness of plasticard did you insert in the legs and under the feet? I feel an insane urge to do some truescale Salamanders overcoming me.

Edit: Another thought that occurs to me. By truescaling your marines for this, you can have regular humans (Inquisitors, Rogue Traders, etc.) that are wearing power armor and there will be an obvious size difference with the marines. Very cool.

Hehe, yeah I went through all my various bitz boxes looking for stuff that would work for a Necro gang/ Necro terrain, accessories, etc. I may have gone overboard but I now have a huge bitz container full of necro bits and several bags full of bits as well. I think I'm gonna try and very, very gothic take on Delaque using FW Renegade militia torsos and Empire Flagellant legs. Maybe Dakka could host it for us as this is a truly dakka born craze and legoburner is such a genius for the tech side. We would also have the discussion forum alread

I think they would have to pay for that since that would cost bandwidth I guess. Or you could of course have everybody put down a little bit of money and get that thing running. If you format the pictures to a relatively small size and offer people something like a pbase or photobucket account (of the site) with the pics in their true size you might be out a bit cheaper. We do something like that for the Anargo Sector Project. Well...there we have one guy offering us his bandwidth which is just amazing!

Show was good, parties great and then Amsterdam was awesome.

Amsterdam is overrated!!! Nah...it's a cool place to be, but only once or twice a year, it tends to get boring rather quickly.

Malika, I didn't even realize your Dutch. Where about from Holland?

Rotterdam, it's about 1 hour down south from Amsterdam, second biggest city in the country.

I have set up a Google Group for this kind of thing called inquisimunda. It's restricted access and you must be invited. I'd like to get everyone participating in this thread to sign up for it. If you are interested, send me a PM with your email address and I will invite you. So far, only Son of Guilliman has signed up.

The fact that it isn't public is going to put a lot of people off. I think that a project such as this which is meant to be visually appealing and inspiring should be very much public, not something private which you could only view or participate in once you are invited.

Honestly, I would like to make the site public, but when anybody can join there's a nasty tendency for spammers to join and start spamming the group. I suppose I can make it public, but I don't know if the google groups offer the same kind of options as yahoo groups where all messages have to be ok'd by the moderator. I'll check it out and see if they do. If they do, I'll make the site public.

Well there is of course the Groups thing, but that is more of a community thing. What I'm talking about here is an actual website. On the side of that you could of course have a forum where people can submit their stuff and ideas and what not, and then the best stuff of that gets filtered through to the website.

We do a very similar thing over at the Anargo Sector Project, we discuss our stuff on our forum and once we're happy with it we try to move it to our website. However, I think we could keep the discussions and such over here at Dakkadakka for now and still have that website.

But yeah...the stuff on the website itself can't be touched or changed by outsiders and potential spammers and everybody could still see it (which is the whole idea here), so perhaps a static website with a forum on the side might be the best solution for this.

I'm also tempted to try a few others, especially Cawdor since they were my first Necro gang ever.

All thanks to Migsula for giving me the Necro bug again.

I would be more than happy to contribute articles, images etc to a =I=munda website. Maybe even some SEO if we wanted? Not that its a huge necessity since we already have a base of interested people on here and it wouldn't be hard to top the rankings for our terms (since they are original and would only be competing against our forums posts here).

Looking forward to seeing the finished spawn Migs.

Yeah but you're a mod here, you just don;t want to see people go! (you know I'm kidding right? )

But yeah, I agree with you that for now this shouldn't really be a problem. But I think that once the artwork and whatever else starts kicking in good it would indeed make a cool thing to have a website flying around. Or perhaps a series of PDF files (which could be downloaded from DakkaDakka for example) containing all that cool stuff. So rules, artwork, tutorials, galleries and such! Some sort of =][=munda webzine perhaps?

That could be cool if done right. The Bretonians also have some good models for Cawdor, the men at arms would work well with some gs'ed boots. The wood elf glade guard hooded heads would match up nicely for them(or flaggelants for that matter), with gs masks added.

I'm still working on a theme. I really want to do Delaque with the FW bits but I'm also really tempted to make a Mad Puppet Miniatures style gang with really heavy Mad Max/ post apocalyptic feel, and I think Orlocks would be a better fit for them. Although I might just do a few in that theme as hired guns.

Another cool idea I had was to use those Pig Iron heads for pit slaves, possibly mixed with some marauder bits. I'm hoping the new Marauder horsemen bits get released soon cause the torsos and heads will be a gold mine for bits in general.

Anyway, hopefully we aren't threadjacking here bouncing around ideas, but just thought I'd share some of my thoughts for converting Necro models from current GW stock.

PIP of the Spawn, I've only used one color of paint (pale skin) rest is inks, washes and tamya clears. Just a bit of fun/experimantation for the campaign really. The fun stopped when I tried to take photos that show the gleaming gore nicely, which proved quite tricky.

I'll finish the base, add some Vallejo water/foam effects for daemonic puss and slime and take pics of the finished piece.

I have been using models from my pretty extensive inquisitorial + imperial collection + hammer's vast blood pact army. With 4 gangs going at it, the NPC elements are more for taste. We even use civilians, which go awol when the shooting brakes and cause all sorts of mishap. Alpharius is a NPC model too, and all of Shaddes offe Greye, the spawn etc.

migs, ive never played n my life, anyidea on a basic gang structure or where to look? (ie, ammount of gang members)
or should i just go to town making some models, then use the ones appropriate?

Jade Vessel - an =I=munda Blog @ 2008/10/26 22:58:13

Post by: Malika2

@Migsula: hammer's blood pact army? I remember only seeing a few pictures of that, where can I find it?

@JD21290: I assume it would be some leader figure (Inquisitor, gang leader, AdMech Priest, etc.) with a retinue consisting of various figures. Take the Necromunda gang structure from the rulebook which you can find here in which there is a single leader, two heavies, a bunch of gangers and a bunch of juves (rookies). Migsula's version of =I=munda has a limit of 10 members for a gang if I remember correctly. So yeah what will your "gang"/warband/etc include:
-Leader: this can be an Inquisitor, Commissar, officer, crimelord, or even an Ork Nob or Eldar Guardian captain or something?
-Heavies: the name kind of says it, these are the ones that carry the big weaponry. I guess Servitors will also fall under this category, which reminds me...maybe I should try to come up with some rules for Servitors!
-Gangers: your standard unit, be it your soldiers, bodyguards or whatever.
-Juves: Young soldiers, basically weaker figures. One of the gang partaking in Migsula's campaign used some sort of tech adapt to represent a Juve.

JD21290: Malika2 had it pretty good.

Finished building this:

It's the Arvus Lighter from forge. Really liked the model and you don't see these around too much so people don't have that strong image about them yet. Model also looks enough like civilian craft to work as a syndicate transport, and it's big enough to fit my gang in. Small modification is that I raised t a bit (about 3mm) so that storm bolter fits beneath it. I also filed away all imperial eagles. Didn't want to put too big gun there cause of the gaming reasons and wanted the vehicle maintain its civilian look.

There isn't that much to see yet as it's pretty much straight from the box. Painting will be done mostly with black and some details with grey and metal. I want to give it an unmarked vehicle look, like a secret government or mobster vehicle

More pics you can check out from forges site:

It's definitely the most appropriate of the Navy models FW produces.

Past the main gangs, the accessory vehicles and characters are definitely where the flavor of the campaigns really comes out.

Built the base for Jargassor, a model I am really looking forward to working on. I also started on a female cultist assassin for hire - very wip. She will have a massive hair do and be generally OTT in a Blancheesque way. Think female version of his Berserker Assassin concept sketch.

As for the spwan, this is testament to how fething impossible I am finding to photograph it. The reds are all orange because of the glare :(

I think giving a head swap on the driver would've made a huge difference! Some gun-ho looking dude with raybans - syndicate show off more than a tired cadian.

The base model for the Assassin is from the Dark Age range IIRC - thanks Wehrkind for for showing me the model - nothing beats pierced nipples on a death cultist.

And as a note on the skull, which too big for her skull, but it is actually a death mask, so I've carved out the area where it meets her real head to show it and will add strapping detail and possibly horns on the mask. It's one of the smallest skulls, from the nicely scaled flagellant kit, but this base model is just uber thin, so I will be hard pressed to find suitable hands!

Jade Vessel - an =I=munda Blog @ 2008/10/28 12:22:58

Post by: Northen

Thanks mates. The head might use a swap, he's supposed to represent the gang's pilot Javi so bald head with gas mask on could work. I think the pilot helmet looks cool but I can sense the "tired" look too.

Migs: Great model to base the cultist on. I am bit reserved about the head but waiting so see more work done for it before commenting more. And we need a model for Sgt. Jargassor soon, he's got to continue showing off his head popping shooting skills

Btw Migs, about your Alpha Legionaire. I saw he's called Alpharius. Was your purpose to make the actual Primarch of the Alpha Legion, or is it just a huge coincidence that he's also called Alpharius? And the armour, is he pre-heresy? Or just wearing Imperial power armour because he's in disguise?

No, IIRC it was only mentioned in Legion by Dan Abnett. While the IA does offer some general information about the Alpha Legion it does not really go beyond the whole "yes they are soooo secretive and use stealth oh yeah and they are very mysterious because they use propaganda..." Legion kind of delved further into how the Alpha Legion work and stuff like that!

And the armour, is he pre-heresy? Or just wearing Imperial power armour because he's in disguise?

I assume that the armour is pre-heresy but that he hasn't mutated/changed armour. Which makes me wonder, why are Chaos Space Marine backpacks looking different than normal backpacks, even the pre-Heresy marines didn't have those weird ones...

Malika, I have yet to read Legion (although I should do sometime) but I'm pretty sure I read that little tidbit somewhere.

As a sidenote, I keep my old copy of the WD with the IA article in next to my painting desk for picture references :p

Back on-topic for Migs, the female Assassin is shaping up nicely, I dig the combination of the skull mask and the sensual pose. Since you mentioned you're going for a Blanchesque vibe, I'm eagerly anticipating the results.

Thanks Keith!

As for Alpha Legion - they are all called Alpharius Really recommend reading Legion, if you haven't.

We have a game coming up on Sunday, with some great narrative and adventure ahead.

Here's a story Hammer wrote that ties to a model he is working on.

Sound of muffled steps beyond the door brought Interrogator Navarro to full alertness. It has been a long vigil, little shy of thirty seven hours, for Navarro as he had sat cross-legged on the floor, waiting. He had neither eaten nor slept during the time, but just watched the door and what he knew was happening beyond it. The others, Arbitrator Prime Kosutic and Gunnery Chief Steuben, had visited the room for from time to time, but had always left when their nerves, drawn tight as clockwork, finally forced them to seek some diversion. Nicodemus Quarth, deeply disapproving the whole business, had stayed away entirely.

Navarro missed Church’s company more than he had even realised before. The Tech Priest had not talked much, but he had had a soothing presence nevertheless, only noticeable by its absence now that he was dead. He hadn’t seen the two servitors, Satin and Velvet, in two days, but he knew they were somewhere near. Eva Kosutic had taken the servitors under her guidance now that Tech Priest Church was gone and he assumed she had put the servitors on a sentry duty somewhere near.

Navarro had also mused over the fate of Chastity Kross, their bounty hunter guide to the under city. Where had she disappeared during the final stages of fight against the cult of the Snarling? Did she desert? Was she captured? Chief Steuben had made a few forays to the undercity, trying to locate her while Navarro had held his long vigil before the door. But so far he hadn’t found any trace of her.

The capture of the Reader had been fortunate even if the Inquisitors retinue had paid dearly in blood for it. Eva Kosutic had been interrogating the cultist ever since. Navarro would have preferred doing the interrogation himself, but he knew his place was now before the door, behind which Inquisitor Harker had gone. As an Arbitrator, trained in various techniques of questioning the unwilling, Kosutic had done a good job of the interrogation anyway. They now knew far more than they had before of the workings of the cult of the Snarling and were that much closer to the Vessel.

The door opened slowly, agonisingly slowly, and a figure stood behind it, silhouetted by soft light from beyond the threshold. Inquisitor Harker looked tired and worn-out. His face was sweaty and deep lines of worry made him look aged. Only his eyes, dark and deep, showed the inner strength of his character. Harker had draped himself with the Flag of the Martyrs and he was shivering and fevered.

“It is done, Eduard.” He croaked in a hoarse voice. “It is done.”

Navarro rose on to numb feet and shuffled to his master.

“By the Emperor, there is no going back now...”

Navarro could read the quiet horror in his master’s eyes. He could hear the uncertainty in his voice. What had they done? How had things gone this far?

The two stood there, on the entryway, for a long time, contemplating the future... the callous and uncaring future, that now stood before them like a dark storm cloud, pregnant with barely restrained vehemence.

It was said that the road to Chaos was paved with good intentions...

“Emperor almighty, protect thy servants.”

I had guessed it was a mask (as in the blanche illustration). Anyone got a link to a pic of the original mini the body is from? Looks interesting for a number of =I= assassin etc conversions.

Really looking forward to seeing the good sgt himself. When can we expect more from the other members? Northern and Migs are stealing the show here!

Cheers,

Dante

I have been reading your log for a little while as a non member from your link over at warseer. I am very impressed by all the models and ideas in this log. I would like to commend everyone on they're awesome gangs. I can't wait to see this progress and develop. I also am excited about that death cult assassin.

Looking at the pics of the arvus lighter again, is it just the pics or is it a little warped at the back? This log has reminded me that I wanted to get one of those a while back but I'm wondering if its going to be one of those FW kits with lots of issues?

Did it go together easily? Take it you need to use super glue with resin? (silly question I know but I had to be sure having never worked with it!).

Cheers,

Dante

Uh, oh... Saints Row 2 has sort of crowded my free time lately.

But I'm in process of building a brand new character for my gang right now. I see Migsula posted, few posts up, the short story I wrote as a sort of introduction to the new character.

Next week, after our sunday game, there will be pictures of something new.

Mine didn't have any major issues. No wrapped parts or anything like that. Few bubbles and little misfits (like in the back) but nothing that can't be solved with some putty and sanding. Two big faults IMO are that after you put the hull togehther the back door comes almost impossible to open, guess you could model some kind of handle to it. Other propblem is that the seam goes right in the middle of the hull so you need to fill quite a lot, on the top it's not that bad as it has some overlapping panels, but bottom doesen't.

But I am pleased with this kit overall, can recomend it.

And yeah, super glue is the way to go with resin. And wash those parts with warm water before assembly, makes the paint stick better to the resin.

Thanks for the explanation guys.

I really want to finish my Art-scale Marine.. haven't decided on chapter/legion yet.. am very tempted to make him an Alpha Legionaire, using the Mohawk head from the new Chaos Marauder Horsemen..
Though, I need to finish 500pts of Chaos Renegade Militia for a doubles tournament before the 8th of November.. and I'm pretty much behind schedule!

Damn, this thread is way to cool, and gets me away from stuff I need to finish!

Cheers!

Do a Maledictor!!! Now that would rule!

The new Chaos Marauders have Mohawk heads? Those would be great for making some Necromunda Goliath's!

Seconded!

I think it is from a Forsaken Saint Mary miniature, but I can't be sure...

Anyone?

Mixed bag of news today.

I got the infinity figs, and they are GORGEOUS!!! but too small for 40k scale...atleast the human spec op types. The "SAS" guy would've been fantastic for Jargassor, and even works fine with Alpharius, really nailing home the human v astartes physique, but then he looks ridiculous next to any other models in the campaign. The scifi samurai and ninja I ordered are absolutely stunning but also big enough, so I may convert one of them to be a future =I=munda hired gun or a gang member in a future gang

But alas the hunt for Jargassor continues, working on the Empire plastics as an armature, with cadian bits and my bitz box treatment, being the new plan.

In other News, Hammer has begun brainstorming for the next campaign already!!! Which will be a genestealer infested affair and possibly require everyone making a good gang and a bad gang.

Good gangs and bad gangs for the win!

Looking forward to seeing what you achieve for Jargassor with the empire plastics, I've had mine out on the workbench for a while on my cuirrent project but havent found an appropriate use yet. I reckon they'll see plenty of action in my "good" gang though, especially the pistoliers sprues.

As always, keep up the amazing work chaps, really keeping me motivated and I am highly appreciative of the contributions of you all!

Cheers,

Dante

A-ha!

So, I think it is actually this miniature:

The Skarrd Toxic Mistress.

Other good options are:

Forsaken X'cess

A Death Cultist waiting to happen:

Skarrd Saber

and my original guess:

Forsaken Saint Mary.

Good conversion fodder there, especially as the entire GW range is sadly lacking in female miniatures.

Well, female miniatures without man-hands and brutish faces.

That's a great selection of models. I haven't really paid Dark Age enough attention it would seem.

Yes that's the one!! Wehrkind showed me the models initially, but I never got the names.
